[instrumental music]
Anything wrong with the drink, miss?
Oh, I’m just feeling strange.
Don't worry, I-I'm sure I'll be fine in a minute or two.
Have you gentlemen decided yet?
[Jean] 'Oh!'
[metal clanking]
What is it, miss? What's wrong?
Is there someplace I could lie down?
Here, let me help you.
[music continues]
[knock on door]
- What happened? - She started to faint.
Please, if I could just lie down for a while.
Oh, of course.
- Call the doctor. - Oh, no, no. I'm..
I know it's nothing serious.
If I could just rest here a while
I'm sure I'll be fine.
You've been very kind.
Thank you.
Well, you sure you’ll be alright?
Well, alone at last.
[dramatic music]
Alright, everything in the safe.
Go on.
Move.
[music continues]
[music continues]
- Feeling better? - Yes, and thank you.
Don't hold out.
That wouldn't be very smart.
[music continues]
Oh, and, uh, don't try to follow me.
[engine revving]
[tire screeching]

Tonight's episode
"The Deadly Species."
[instrumental music]
[male narrator] On the afternoon of September 5th
a New Orleans restaurant was held up and robbed.
The fact that the robbery was perpetrated by a woman
suggested several suspects to local police
including Jean Margaret Scott
an escapee from a woman's prison in Texas.
Since Jean Scott was already the subject
of an FBI identification order
her picture was on file
with the New Orleans Police Department.
The restaurant manager and other witnesses
identified Jean Scott as the hold-up woman.
[Marshall] 'What's she done now?'
[Lewis] 'She's been identified in a hold-up'
'of a restaurant here a few hours ago.'
I suppose there'll be publicity
about my being her sister.
I'll have to think of my family first.
What do you wanna know?
We appreciate your cooperation, Mrs. Marshall.
When did you last hear from her?
Last night, it was nearly 12.
Woke us out of a sound sleep.
Why did she call?
To see if I knew where her ex-husband and son were.
And what did you tell her?
[Marshall] 'That I hadn't heard from John in years.'
You know, he divorced her.
That was nearly eight years ago
when she went to prison the first time.
He took Little Tommy with him.
There was a man with her in the robbery.
Do you know who he is?
Well, she did mention that she was just passing through
with, uh, Charlie.
Charlie Claybourne, that was it.
Did she say where they were going?
Here we are, talking about this criminal
you're trying to catch.
She's my baby sister.
I looked after her when our parents died.
I tried the best I could
but I wasn't much more than a child myself.
She was always getting into trouble.
I was the one who pushed to marry John.
[sobbing] I figured that would be the end of it.
Would you let us know if you hear from her again?
[sobs]
[music continues]
Hey, Red.
Hey, Red. Will you stop that?
Stop it. Eat your sandwich.
- I ain't so hungry right now. - Well, eat it anyway.
Ham and cheese.
Hey, you know what I've been thinking?
No, what?
I've been thinking that me and you
could really make folks around here
sit up and take notice.
We can hit us some big jobs.
I got a million ideas, and you'd fit in just perfect.
I can just imagine land right back in jail.
Hey, no way. As long as we keep movin'
change cars like we have been.
We'll always stay one jump ahead of the law.
What’s the matter, don’t you buy it?
It’s that kid of yours again, isn’t it?
How about payin’ some attention to me?
Oh, poor boy.
Come on, now. You can do better than that.
[dramatic music]
Hey, listen, if you and me are gonna be a team
we gotta have a whole lot better understanding.
You can stop worrying, Red
'cause we're not gonna be a team.
Hey. Hey, cut that out.
That-that’s a bad joke.
[g*nsh*t]
Hey, come on, now! Q-quit kiddin’ around!
Who’s kiddin’?
Give me the keys to the car, Red.
Oh, give me that.
[g*nsh*t]
The keys, Red?
You're just gonna take off?
Le-leave me out here?
What about the money from the restaurant?
- What about my share? - Forget it.
I'm gonna need it.
All of it.
You're gonna have to find yourself
another partner, partner.
[music continues]
[male #1] ’Yeah. That’s the guy.’
You're sure he's the one who drove off with the girl?
Yeah, I'm positive.
I-I know because I remember wondering
why would a guy hang around a restaurant parking lot
for 45 minutes?
I thought he got stood up.
Thanks, you've been a big help.
Yeah, you bet.
Mr. Ward.
Yes, Art?
Lewis, the Little Rock office
just located Scott's getaway car.
It was abandoned in a state park
just across the Arkansas line.
Did the name check and photograph
of Claybourne pay off?
The parking attendant here identified him
as the man who was with her.
'Fine, fine.'
Do you have an address yet on him in Dallas?
Not yet. We're working on it.
You better get down there right away, Lewis
and see what you can find out.
I'll let the office there know you're on the way.
Right, Art.
[dramatic music]
[sighs]
[knock on door]
Yeah?
[knocking continues]
Yeah?
Oh.
If it isn't my favorite client.
Real nice to see you again, Scott.
You know, you're not the easiest person
in the world to find.
Yeah.
I was sure surprised to hear you were looking for me.
But, uh, you're full of surprises.
What's that supposed to mean?
Oh, nothing.
Just that I hear the FBI is interested in you.
Well, it's nice to be loved.
Oh, excuse me.
Have a seat, Miss Scott.
There's just one thing I wanna know from you.
Have you found my son yet?
Oh, I guess you know, uh
me and the Midland Detective Agency
uh, split company a while back.
Yeah, well, spare me the details.
Well, I was working on your case
right up until the agency discovered the real reason
your husband got that divorce.
They made me drop it.
Couple of weeks later, I quit.
You mean, you haven't even been looking for them?
Look, Miss Scott
I could probably wrap up your case in less than a week.
Well, I mean, your retainer went to Midland
I was just on salary there.
So, how much will it cost me to have you keep looking?
Well, it's an out of town case that runs up a little.
I get a bill a day plus expenses.
[laughs]
A $100 is more than the agency was getting.
Okay, look, Miss Scott
a $100 and I'll pay my own expenses.
How's that?
Plus travel, I mean
I gotta get reimbursed for my travel.
I'll tell you what, Mr. Jennings.
Flat deal. $500 now, $500 when you find him.
Plus travel?
Well, I don't..
Okay, okay, you got it.
Sure, is nice seeing you again.
Hey, listen
you don't have to rush off.
What do you say, uh, we’ll have a drink and..
get better acquainted?
[dramatic music]
I'll be moving around
so, how do I get in touch with you?
Well, I figured there somewhere
up around Lincoln, Nebraska.
Call me at the 4th Street Motel
in Lincoln, in a couple of days.
If I'm not there
I'll leave a number where I can be reached.
You'll be hearing from me.
[music continues]
[instrumental music]
You, what have you got?
Claybourne's landlord said he got back his old job
with the sandblasting crew.
He’d be gone work by the time we got there.
Which one is he?
The one up on the scaffold, this side in the blue jeans.
US attorney in New Orleans has authorized
an unlawful flight warrant for his arrest.
Let's go.
[instrumental music]
[dramatic music]
[Lewis] Claybourne, FBI!
[rattling]
[music continues]
[car engine revving]
[revving continues]
Eh, I don’t know.
Maybe if I work on the timing
go over the valves and liquids again.
Ah, quit kiddin' yourself. We need a new engine.
I know what we need, Billy boy. I'm talkin' what we can get.
Eh..
Without a new engine, we can’t even make qualifying time.
Look, don't be such a pessimist.
I've rebuilt this thing before, and I can do it again.
We're gonna win some races, Bill.
- Huh. - We just got to.
[chuckling]
Gonna be our year, huh, partner?
[clicking tongue] Oh, yeah.
[chuckling]
[sighs]
Why don't you play with the engine?
I'm gonna go play with that bird over there.
Hi.
Hi. You're Bill Leonard.
Now, don't tell me we've met before. I'd remember that.
You're a racing fan, right?
Nope. We have a mutual friend.
- Who? - A girl named Angie Pierce.
She told me a lot about you.
[chuckles] Angie.
Last I heard of her, she was in prison.
She's still there. That's where I met her.
What are you doing there, a little social work?
What I was doing was five to ten.
Hmm.
So, you got out and came here with a message from Angie?
No, she doesn't know I'm here.
I don't get it.
She talked about you all the time.
You sounded interesting.
So, I thought I'd come and see for myself.
What do you think?
I think she was right.
You come right on, don't you?
It's the only way to fly.
You gonna buy me a drink
or do I have to sit here all day?
Oh.
[instrumental music]
Anything you say may be used against you
and you have the right to an attorney.
Do you, uh, waive your rights to remain silent?
Why not?
I'll tell you.
The sorriest day of my life
the day I let that witch get her hooks in me.
[Lewis] ’What happened, did she run out on you?’
But not before she came within a skinny inch
of drilling me full of holes.
Do you know where she was going?
’I guess she’s out lookin’ for her kid.’
A boy she hasn't even seen in years.
She’s got some detective agency workin’ on it.
Tryin’ to track him and her ex-husband down.
What's the name of the agency?
I don't know.
But it's in Kansas City.
Do you know the investigator's name?
Yeah, it's Jensen or Jenner, something like that.
Did she talk about what she plans to do, uh
if and when she finds them?
Yeah. She's gonna steal her kid back.
Smuggle him out of the country.
That’s why she’s been pullin’ these hold-ups.
Get enough money together to take her kid away someplace.
Alright, Claybourne, that's all for now.
Inspector, any of this helps you catch up with that little gal
you be sure and tell her Old Red Claybourne
helped get her busted.
[piano music]
[Jean laughing]
- Well.. - Hm?
Mm.
Angie didn't tell me you had a sense of humor.
Yeah, what’d she tell you?
That you are...different.
- Am I ? - You are.
- And so are you. - How?
Well, I have mixed feelings about you.
And only some of them are good.
Okay. What’s on your mind, Scotty?
I’m lookin’ for someone to team up with.
Mm.
Well, what's that supposed to mean?
It means thanks, but no thanks.
What are you gonna go back and...play with your car?
That's a lot better than jail. Had enough of that.
Maybe you had the wrong partner.
Mm?
Then again, maybe I was wrong about you.
You probably are better off where you are.
It's too bad.
Might have been nice.
[dramatic music]
Honestly, I'm just scared to death of g*ns
but I, I live alone and I've been thinking
of buying a small g*n to keep in my apartment.
Certainly. If you'd like
I'll be happy to offer a suggestion or two.
Now, here's a real nice item.
It's a .38 police special.
That's a good as g*n as anybody could want.
Here. See how it feels in your hand.
- Well, is it loaded? - Oh, no, no!
None of our g*ns are ever loaded.
- Oh, wow! - Oh.
It's so heavy.
[chuckling]
Oh. I think I need two hands just to lift it.
Well, actually, that's not a bad way
to sh**t a p*stol, with two hands.
A lot of your real fine p*stol shots do it that way.
Oh, yeah? Okay.
[laughs]
I don't know. Do you have something lighter?
Mm-hmm.
Now, here's one they call the detective model.
This is the same g*n as that one
only with a two-inch barrel.
I'll be with you in just a minute, sir.
Now, give that one a try.
Oh.. Oh.
- This is much better. - Mm-hmm.
Now, will you show me how to hold it?
Mm, well, yeah. Ahem.
You put your finger on the trigger, just like that.
- Put your other hand like so. - Yeah.
Now, stiffen your elbows so your arms are straight.
'Now, pull back the hammer with your thumb.'
'Uh. No, with your, with your thumb.'
[Jean] Oh. Hah, right.
[male #2] 'Till it clicks. Mm-hmm.'
Now, take a real fine aim
and just squeeze it off.
[g*n clicks]
Eh, is that all there is to it?
That's all. Now, if you're interested
I can make you a real nice deal on that particular item.
Oh, well, I'm interested.
In fact, I'll take it.
In fact, we'll take both of them.
Hey, don't-don't aim that thing.
Even an unloaded g*n, you should..
There six more of these in this g*n, mister.
You’re, uh, together?
We want the g*ns, we want ammunition
and, naturally, we wouldn’t want to leave
any loose cash lying around.
See what he's got in the register.
[dramatic music]
[cash register dings]
Now, what was that part about...squeezing it off?
Come on, let's get out of here.
[intense music]
[instrumental music]
Come right in, gentlemen.
Please, take a seat.
Jennings is the man you are looking for.
Lou Victor Jennings.
He was one of our investigators
but, uh, he resigned about, uh, about a month ago.
Where is he now?
He left town, the last I heard. But I don't know where he went.
Can we see your file on the Jean Scott case, please?
Of course.
"Scott, Scott.."
"Jean." Here it is.
Now, let's see.
Oh, yes. That, uh..
that was an investigation
to locate her ex-husband and son.
According to Jennings' report, the husband changed his name
and moved away from Kansas City.
He had information they located
in or around Lincoln, Nebraska.
But he couldn't pin it down any finer than that.
You know what name the ex-husband's using now?
Nothing on that. I'm sorry.
[telephone buzzing]
Excuse me.
Yes? Oh, alright.
Call for you on my private line, inspector. You can take it here.
Oh, thank you.
Erskine.
Lewis, Jean Scott has been identified
in a hold-up of a g*n shop in Des Moines, Iowa.
A man was with her on the job.
Has he been identified?
Not yet. You'd better get right out there.
[instrumental music]
You sure, Mr. Jennings, you sure it's them?
Well, look, you stay right where you are
and I'll get out there as soon as I can.
Right.
You get where, and who's Jennings?
The private detective I hired to find my little boy.
And he did it, Bill. He found ’em in Lincoln.
Well, that's terrific.
Now, you're gonna go running off to Lincoln
to get your kid, huh?
Guess again, Scotty.
Oh, Bill, if you knew how long I waited. It's been seven years.
I, I haven't seen him since he was a little boy
just a year old.
The kid has waited seven years
he can wait a couple more days.
We got plans here in Omaha, remember?
Now, you're the one that had the big ideas
you came to me, right?
You wanna walk out on me?
No way, baby.
I said no way!
Hey..
You come on pretty strong yourself, you know that?
You ain’t see nothin’ yet, baby.
[chuckles]
Try walkin' out on me again, you'll see.
You really mean it, don't you?
You better believe it.
Okay, you're right.
We'll pull the job tomorrow.
I'm gonna need all the money I can get my hands on
when I do have my kid.
I'll call Jennings and tell him
I'll be up day after tomorrow.
Yeah, that's better.
Hey, Bill.
[Bill] 'Hm?'
Have you ever thought of settling down with a family?
'Why?'
Just asking.
[instrumental music]
[clatter]
Hi, can I do you fellas somethin’?
- Amos Wick? - Yeah.
We're with the FBI.
You phoned our office that you had information
about the g*n shop robbery.
That's right.
I did.
That Jean Scott you fellas are looking for.
I can tell you who her partner was.
A guy named Bill Leonard, my ex-partner.
How do you know?
I saw her the day she picked him up
out there at the racetrack.
Then a couple of days later
I see this picture in the paper
and read where she just knocked over
a g*n shop here in town
with some unidentified guy.
Well, it was Bill Leonard.
William T.
You look him up, he's been in trouble before
down in Texas.
Got a record and mugshot on him down there, I bet.
Do you know where we can find him?
'He moved out of his room.'
I haven’t seen him since he took off with
that female Jesse James.
You know, we coulda won some races.
I mean, he had the makings of a darn good driver.
Instead, he takes off
leaves me with a bunch of bills to pay.
The jerk.
Well, if he should contact you
would you get in touch with us right away?
Don't worry, I will.
[engines revving]
[crowd cheering]
[indistinct chatter over PA]
[dramatic music]
[knocking on door]
Let me see Mr. Edwards.
'Mr. Edwards, you better come with me.'
- 'Yes? What is it?' - We may have some trouble. sir.
A lady apparently had an accident in the stand.
- Uh-huh! - She’s claimed..
She caught a heel on a broken step.
- She said she's going to sue. - Sue?
She won't even let the doctor treat her.
Well, we'll see about that. Thank you.
Hello, I'm Mr. Edwards, the track manager.
Can I help you, miss?
Mr. Edwards
you're gonna be bigger help than you ever dreamed.
[door opens]
Alright. Over there.
All of you get on the floor except Mr. Edwards
and get your hands behind your back.
[engines revving]
Go.
[engines revving]
Alright, come on.
Just like I told you now.
[knocking on door]
I'm back, George.
[gasping]
Hands on your head.
Come on.
Alright, get down.
Put your hands behind your back.
Alright.
All the bills, no change.
[engines revving]
[instrumental music]
[tires screeching]
[instrumental music]
That's him.
If you want to know, he didn’t scare me
half as much as that Scott woman.
I swear, she was just hoping
for somebody to give her an excuse
to open up with that g*n.
How much did they get?
’Around 30,000, all small bills.’
- Excuse me. - Sure.
Mr. Ward just called
we've located, uh, Jean Scott's ex-husband and son.
They're living in Lincoln
and they're using the name Denton.
[instrumental music]
[birds chirping]
[indistinct chatter]
Uh, where is he? You said he'd be here.
Hey, slow down. What do you think
I have him in my back pocket or something?
First the bread, then the kid.
What?
I said the money you owe me. Five bills, remember?
Yeah.
Where is he?
On the tennis court, right there.
[music continues]
[Tommy] See you next week.
Tommy?
Yes?
Oh!
Tommy, how are you?
Okay.
How come you know my name?
Well, I guess I know it better than anybody.
I gave it to you.
Don't you know who I am?
Well, I'm..
I know this is gonna be hard for you to believe
but..
...I’m your mother.
Oh, it's right, Tommy
I am, I really am.
Oh, Tommy baby, I've waited so long.
I spent years looking for you.
And now I've found you
and nobody will ever take you away from me again.
We're going away from here.
We'll live somewhere thousands of miles from here
and you can have everything you ever wanted.
Please, I have to go.
Oh, we'll be so happy.
[John] 'Jean, leave him alone.'
T-Tommy, come here.
Leave him alone!
Tommy, there's nothing to be afraid of.
Let's go home, dad. Can we?
[John] 'Sure.'
You did this.
You made him hate me.
You spoiled it.
You spoiled everything!
Who was it that spoiled everything, Jean?
[music continues]
- Hey, no, Scotty. - Let me load it.
- I'm gonna get my son. - With a g*n?
- Get in the car. - No.
- He's mine-- - Get in the car!
[sobbing] But he belongs to me!
Not anymore, he doesn't.
Get in.
[car door closes]
[music continues]
Mr. Denton?
Yes?
We're with the FBI.
Could we, uh
talk to you privately?
Why don't you run on inside, son?
I'll see you in a minute.
I, uh, don’t want to leave him alone too long.
He just had a rather rough experience.
His mother?
We just saw her at North Side Park
not more than 30 minutes ago.
She wanted to take Tommy away with her.
She’s still there do you know?
No, she drove off.
Did she say where she was going?
No.
What about the car?
It was a new fastback.
A kind of a medium blue.
She had a man with her.
[door closes]
Bill?
What're you doing?
What's it look like?
Ah, you picked a bad time for a joke.
Joke? Huh!
Here's a joke, baby.
Little mother looking for a boy with a g*n in her hand.
I’m leavin’.
B-but, Bill, I love you.
Oh, really?
Bill, that money is just a start.
I mean, we can make a real bundle
and we can go away, just the two of us.
Not with me, baby.
Bill, I never wanted anyone before.
But with you..
...it..
It's different.
Bill, please..
[sighs] What if I went with a screwball like you?
With this bread there’s a lot of sweet young things out there.
With no hang-ups.
Bill!
Don’t go, please. Don’t walk out of me now.
I, I need you, please.
Bill, please!
Inspector, the car parked in the lot
answers the description, alright.
And the parking lot attendant
identified they're photographs, too.
Leonard just called the desk.
He's on his way down to checkout.
Clear the lobby.
Would you and the telephone operator
mind moving in the back room, please?
[dramatic music]
Bill, please.
FBI, Leonard. You’re under arrest.
Put your hands behind your head.
[music continues]
[sobbing]
[dramatic music]
Uh. Oh, Bill.
When you walked out that door a few minutes ago
I said to myself, "Well, Scotty. That’s it, baby.
There’s no use in going on anymore."
Isn't that crazy?
Bill, I couldn’t take it, if you’d left me.
Everything that's ever happened to me has been so rotten.
I used to think it’s my fault.
Everyone can't wait to get away from me.
My own folks, my own mother and father
they died just to get away from me.
I'm so tired of fighting.
I want someone to stay.
I want someone to care.
I want just you and Tommy and me.
I want something that's mine.
I want someone..
...who belongs to me.
I'm glad you came back, Bill.
You won't be sorry. You'll see.
[dramatic music]
I almost forgot. We have to pick up Tommy.
My little boy.
You see, we're planning to take a trip.
Just the three of us.
Bill, Tommy and me.
Oh, I'm a lucky girl.
I have two handsome men in my life.
[male narrator] Jean Margaret Scott was returned to the custody
of Penal Authorities in Texas.
But she was afforded psychiatric care
until such time when she was able
to complete her original sentence.
Robbery detainers were placed against her
in Louisiana, Iowa, Nebraska.
Charles Bryant Claybourne and William Leonard
were tried in state courts
and found guilty of armed robbery.
