[dramatic music]

- We're home. - Get the bags.

What do you think?

I think we're going to be rich.

[thuds]

[alarm ringing]

I thought you said we were gonna bypass the alarm.

I did. There must be another alarm.

- Maybe a-- - But what're we gonna do?

Well, we're gonna go in there and get the money.

We still have a few minutes.

Alright now, come on. Get in.

[alarm ringing]

Come on.

[engine revving]

[tires screeching]

We got, we've got enough.

Get me more.

Go in the back door.

[alarm ringing]

Alright, let's go.

[intense music]

[instrumental music]

[Marvin Miller] On the evening of September 5th

the Citizens Bank of Denver was burglarized

of nearly $1,000,000.

The largest burglary in Denver's recorded history.

The thieves had gained access to the vault

by constructing a tunnel five feet beneath

the surface of a downtown street.

A tunnel that began in the basement

of a recently rented building.

And was to lead the FBI

into one of its most complex cases.

The Denver office says the building was rented

six weeks ago by a man calling himself Richard Denton.

So far it's proved to be an alias.

What about the real estate agent handling the transaction?

Uh, he described Denton as, uh, about 35, six feet, brown hair

um, full beard. He said he was pleasant enough.

He didn't talk much.

Just came in one day

asked to look at the building and rented it.

'But the only unusual thing was that he gave him cash.'

- Did he sign the lease? - Hm.

Documents section is trying to identify the signature now.

The identification division hasn't come up with anything yet

on the fingerprints taken from the building in the vault.

Now, Lewis, I spoke to the director this morning.

He wants results. He wants you to take over immediately.

Right.

[instrumental music]

Three hundred thousand dollars for six weeks' work.

You know what that comes to by the hour? Huh?

I'll tell you.

For a regular 40-hour week it comes to 1250 bucks!

You know, I once went on a strike for three months

for a lousy four bit an hour raise.

Where's my pencil?

You've got to be kidding!

You know how many pencils you can buy with that kind of money?

I guess there's some habits even money can't break.

Alright, Michaels.

You go first.

Oh, yeah, sure.

What are you gonna do with all that money?

[chuckles]

Uh.. I don't know.

I never had anything my whole life.

I'll get me a big car, yeah, and..

...with a pretty girl sitting next to me.

Well, I, I guess this is it, huh?

This is it.

- Take care of yourself, kid. - Yeah, sure.

I can't touch that stuff.

The fact is I think you've known it all along, haven't you?

I know that you were once an alcoholic, yeah.

Then why did you trust pickin' me for the job?

You've been dry for three years now.

Four years.

But still it's, it's no guarantee

under pressure or something I wouldn't hit it again.

[chuckles]

Alright.

I think that you'd beat it

because there's something that you really want.

A hardware store in a small town in New England.

Centerville, Maine, right?

'That's something that you've been wanting to buy'

'for a long long time, isn't it, Whelan?'

Crazy, ain't it?

Some people want a desert island

some a fishing boat..

I've always wanted to settle down in a sweet little ol' town

own a hardware store.

Well, now you're gonna be able to do it.

'Yeah, sure.'

[instrumental music]

But what about you, Denton?

You know all about the kid and me

but we don't know the first thing about you.

'Even what your real name is.'

That's exactly the way we're gonna say goodbye.

I hope I never see you again, Whelan.

Well, whoever you are..

...it's sure been a pleasure.

[music continues]

This is an artist conception drawn from descriptions

given by the real estate agent and several merchants

in the neighborhood who remember seeing Edward Denton.

Al, do you have any idea how many men were on this?

Well, considering the amount of work

it took to build this tunnel

and the length of time they had to do it in, I'd say several.

But, uh, none of the others were seen?

- Only Denton. - Hmm.

Well, it means they must come and gone at night.

That's right.

As for transportation, the owner of the shop next door

said he saw a van parked in back.

It had A to Z fixtures on it.

We don't have any information on it yet.

What about the tools they used?

Well, they're ordinary tools.

'We're checking with the local dealers'

'but they could have been purchased'

'anywhere in the country.'

Lou..

Found this in the dirt in the corner.

"A-R-H."

What's the name of the chain? American, um..

American...Resort Hotels, isn't it?

I think so.

Al, where is the nearest one?

Denver Manor House.

That's the only one in town.

Let's check it out.

[instrumental music]

[indistinct chatter]

- See you later, darling. - Okay.

[instrumental music]

- Hello, Alison. - Eliot.

You are gonna ask me to sit down, aren't you?

How've you been?

Fine.

You must have a million questions.

I did have some.

After you suddenly left one day.

I told you that I'd be back.

Eliot, I'm not very good at post mortems.

Oh. Is that what this is?

I'm getting married.

I'm sorry.

I waited. It's been almost a year.

Alison..

I wanted to come home a winner.

A winner?

[chuckles]

But you were a winner...to me.

'Did you think I was some plastic homecoming queen'

that had to be swept off her feet?

Now, listen to me.

I'm not gonna fold up and fade away, Alison.

I'm not going to just let you go.

Honey, we have a court.

Larry, this is Eliot Fielding.

So I've heard.

Oh. And what did you hear?

Oh, among other things that you play a deadly game of tennis.

'We'll have to play sometime.'

I should warn you, I'm a very bad loser.

Well, I'll just have to take my chances.

Goodbye, Eliot.

Nice meeting you.

[instrumental music]

Waiter.

Double scotch on the rocks please.

Uh, Eliot. I thought we'd never see you again.

Well, you know the story about the bad penny, Mr. Stuart.

Bad penny? I think you're being hard on yourself.

Reckless, perhaps.

After all it was your inheritance

you threw away and no one else's.

That's right.

My inheritance.

As far as I'm concerned

West Palm Beach is still your home.

- Of course things can change. - So I've noticed.

Now, take my daughter..

She's got a fine young man of a good family.

They're gonna get married soon.

She's happy, Eliot, and I want her to stay that way--

Mr. Stuart..

I still love Alison.

If that's true, you'll leave her alone.

I'm afraid I can't do that, sir.

I'm afraid you'll have to.

Stay away from my daughter, Eliot

or I'll make trouble for you.

I think you know I can do it.

Maybe this isn't your home after all.

We're really a rather small, closed community.

[dramatic music]

[instrumental music]

You'll notice almost all the people

who checked out that day were couples.

Except this one.

John Michaels.

Looks that he stayed here quite some time.

Yes. Six weeks.

What was he like?

Well, he was a big man, I would say he was 35, 40.

Did you have a chance to talk to him at all?

Well, he wasn't really the talkative type.

Besides he used to leave early in the morning.

Sometimes even before the sun came up.

He came back late at night.

I always thought that he had strange hours

for the kind of work he did.

What kind of work was that?

Well...store fixtures, I guess.

'At least that's what was written on the truck'

that used to pick him up every day.

What's the name of the company?

A to Z fixtures. That was it. A to Z fixtures.

What did the driver look like?

I didn't really get a good look at him.

Although I know he wore a beard.

Did, uh, Michaels receive any mail while he was here?

- No. - Did he make any phone calls?

Yes. I remember he did make one.

And come to think of it, there was something funny about it.

What was that?

Uh, I remember putting him through

to the long distance operator and asking her to call me back

T and C, it's time and charges.

About five minutes later she did.

She just said a man by the name of..

Now, what was that name?

Mills, Roy Mills in 302 made the call.

I told her she was mistaken.

That Michaels was in 302.

But she insisted. She said that was the name he gave her.

Did you mention this to Michaels?

Well, as long as he didn't question paying for it

I didn't see any need to.

We'd like to take a look

at his room, Mr. Nelson, if you don't mind.

Of course.

[instrumental music]

[indistinct chatter]

[sniffles]

[instrumental music]

Mind if I join you?

I guess that's why they made more than one seat.

My name is Roy.

Um, mine's Wanda. Wanda Moore.

Wanda.

Well, it's very nice to meet you, Wanda.

- Same here. - Um..

You taking a trip?

Reno. A friend of mine is picking me up

to give me a lift to the airport.

That's where I'm headed. Reno.

[chuckles] You're kidding.

No, no, I figured if that's where the action is

then I'm gonna have myself a little fun.

Hm. Well, I'm going to, uh, look for a job.

- I'm a singer. - No kidding.

[laughs] No.

As a matter of fact, I, uh..

I just finished up two weeks at the Four Aces saloon here.

- Maybe you caught my act? - Unh-unh. No.

Well, I-I'm just passing through.

Hey. How about if you drive up with me to Reno?

No, no. I-I-I don't think so.

I've got a brand new car.

It's the biggest, brightest thing on wheels.

We'll be there in no time at all if you do some of the driving.

[grunts]

I'll take that.

[intense music]

Oh, it's, it's just that I've got some important papers

in here, and I just don't like anybody to touch it.

What do you say?

Let's go.

[music continues]

Someone must have picked them up

or else they had a car waiting here

because there's a road about a mile east of here

that goes right into Colorado Springs.

Anything yet on the sign painter who did this?

Yeah, we've located him this morning.

He identified the drawing of Denton as the man who hired him

to do the lettering on the truck and also the signs that covered

the store window. That's all the information he could give us.

Lou, it's Mr. Ward.

Yes, Art.

Lewis, the latent prints found in John Michaels' room

have been positively identified with the fingerprint record

of Roy Mills of Flagstaff, Arizona.

I contacted the resident agent there.

'He got a photograph from his former employer.'

Now, as far as he could learn, Mills moved away

almost three years ago leaving no forwarding address.

Uh, does he have an arrest record?

No, the information we have on him was obtained

when he received clearance to work

on a government mining project in Flagstaff.

'I'm sending you his physical description and the photograph.'

Well, what was his job?

He was part of the tunneling crew.

Good, Arthur, uh, we'll alert

all law enforcement agencies in the area.

[instrumental music]

Maybe I didn't make myself clear the last time we met.

I understood you perfectly, Mr. Stuart.

I happen to be chairman of the membership committee

and you've been dropped for not paying your dues.

If you don't leave immediately, I'll call the guard.

I think if you'd check with the club secretary

she'll tell you that I sent in a check

covering everything I owed.

I'm curious, Eliot.

'Where did you get this new found wealth of yours?'

In the ground, Mr. Stuart. In the ground.

Copper in Bolivia.

A gamble, but it paid off quite handsomely.

'Speaking of gambles, I understand that'

'you've been investing in the market quite heavily recently.'

Just what's that supposed to mean?

Excuse me.

[dramatic music]

You got a minute? I'd like to talk to you.

- I haven't got time. - Oh, you can make the time.

Let's go inside, have a drink.

I'm sorry. I've gotta go pick up my wedding dress.

[music continues]

[man on radio] 'D-N-32.'

Thirty-two.

[man on radio] 'Inspector, we just had a response to our teletype alert.'

'Nevada highway patrol found a record of a Roy Mills'

'having been stopped for speeding'

'outside of Virginia City.'

'He was sighted about an hour'

'before the received our alert.'

Was anyone with him?

[man on radio] 'According to the officer'

'who gave him the ticket, there was a young woman.'

'They mentioned they were heading for Reno.'

Has an alert been put on the car?

- 'Yes, sir.' - Alright.

Call the Las Vegas office, tell them we'll be flying to Reno.

And to start canvassing all hotels and motels.

[man on radio] '10-4.'

[intense music]

[gasps]

[chuckles] Come on. You oughta try it.

The water's marvelous.

I told you, I never learned.

I'd like to teach you.

What do you say, I get dressed

we go into town, and gear up some fun, huh?

I'll meet you in the lobby.

No, um, why don't we just stay out here in the sun

for a while, 'cause it really feels good.

Okay, alright, anything you say, honey.

I got all the time in the world.

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

[music continues]

[sighs] I don't know about you, but I'm hungry.

Well, why don't you just have something sent out?

Alright, get me a waiter, and I'll have a hamburger

and another one of these.

Fine.

Where are you going?

I'm just gonna change. I'll be right back.

[music continues]

[dramatic music]

Inspector, a check of the motels just paid off.

There's a Roy Mills registered at the Gold Miner.

[intense music]

[music continues]

Yeah, that's him, I told him I saw his girlfriend

leaving with another man.

He wanted to know if I knew where they went.

[sighs] Did you know?

Yeah, the airport. Oh, I got them the cab.

- Mills went after them? - Hm.

I've never seen anyone look so mad.

He just took off in his car like he was gonna k*ll someone.

Thank you.

[intense music]

[woman on speaker] 'Flight 4 for New York now boarding gate 7.'

Come on, they're boarding the flight now.

[woman on speaker] 'Mr. Al Shaw, please report at the ticketing office.'

[music continues]

I'll take the bag. It better all be there, punk.

- Roy-- - Outside, walk.

[woman on speaker] 'Flight 9A..'

'Flight 19 now arriving in gate 2 from Chicago.'

[music continues]

Hold it, Mills.

[g*nsh*t]

[screaming]

Mills, FBI.

[music continues]

[instrumental music]

I was working on a construction crew in Albuquerque.

What kind of construction?

We were tunneling into a mountain, building a road.

And this guy comes up to me in a bar one night--

Calling himself Richard Denton.

That's the name that he gave me.

And you never saw him before?

- No. - He knew who you were.

Yeah, he knew who I was, what I did..

'He, he even knew how I spend my time off.'

And he just walked up to you

and told you about his plan to hit the bank?

Well, no, I mean, first we talked, uh..

Night after that we talked

and the night after that we talked and..

And then he told me his plan.

Uh-huh.

The third member's name was, uh, Paul Bridges?

Yeah, well, I..

That's what Denton told me to call him

and he was supposed to call me John Michaels.

How well did Denton know Bridges?

I don't know, uh..

I guess about the same he knew me.

Uh, it-it's just something we never talked about.

[instrumental music]

I'd like to see Alison.

- She's not at home. - I think she is.

Would you please tell her that I'm here?

Eliot..

What did you mean when you said you understood

I'd been investing heavily in the stock market?

Just that, Mr. Stuart.

How did you hear about it?

I'm looking for local investments.

I hear you're herding, that your company needs cash.

I was approached by a local law firm.

Claimed they had an interested investor

they wouldn't name.

- You, Eliot? - Mm-hm.

I've instructed them to go ahead.

That, um..

That kind of makes us partners, doesn't it?

[instrumental music]

Alison's in her room.

Thank you.

[knock at door]

Come in.

[music continues]

Eliot, please..

I just wanna hear you say one thing, Alison.

- What? - That you don't love me.

'That there are no more memories.'

'Nothing left in the past.'

You say that..

...and I'll get out of your life right now for good.

I can't.

You know I can't.

[instrumental music]

[indistinct chatter]

Would everybody, would everybody just-just settle down?

Would you just settle down here, a minute, wait a minute.

Now, please, please. I want to, I want to propose a toast.

As the president of the Centerville, Maine

Business Association

it is my great privilege to introduce our latest member

Mr. George Whelan.

- 'Hear! Hear!' - Thank you, thank you.

Say that, that isn't water you're drinking there

is it, George?

According to the Chamber of Commerce here

Centerville is supposed to have the best water in the country.

I thought I'd give it a try.

Good for you.

I wanna thank you for all the nice things

you've said about me

and the way you've made me feel at home.

I don't know when I've met a nicer bunch of fellas.

[cheering]

- Good luck, George. - Very nice.

- Well, thank you, thank you. - Nice to have you here.

Thank you, thank you.

It's so good to have you here, George.

George, can I talk business for a minute?

What is it?

Well, George. I've been curious.

I mean, you deposited an awful amount of cash in my bank.

Oh, why is that so curious?

Well, you know how our society functions today.

It's on credit, not cash.

It's really none of my business where it came from

but it's a small town, George, and everyone's dying to know.

- Well, uh.. - Where did you get it?

Rob a bank?

Or did you have it stashed in one of those Swiss accounts.

Ha ha ha.

George, there's a telephone call for you.

You could take it right over there.

Thank you, excuse me.

Hello.

[Denton] Whelan, this is Denton.

I called you at the store.

'They gave me this number.'

What do you want?

FBI caught Michaels.

- When? - 'Yesterday.'

Now, there is nothing to worry about.

He doesn't know your real name or mine.

'You didn't tell him anything about yourself, did you?'

- No. - Are you sure?

They can get a lot of mileage out of a small slip.

- I'm positive. - Alright.

Don't panic. You've got nothing to worry about.

- 'Alright?' - Yeah, okay.

[instrumental music]

Here we are.

Hey, George, you look like you could use this.

- What? - You-you, bad news?

Come on, pal, drink it. This will k*ll whatever ails you.

[dramatic music]

George, for a man who doesn't drink

you sure do give a good imitation.

If a man can't enjoy a few drinks with real friends

what's the use living?

That is if there is anything left to drink.

Come on, come on.

It's time we should be getting back to work, right.

No, no.

- Bartender. - Come on, George.

Level with us, huh? What's the secret?

Secret?

Well, it's a small town, George.

A man blows into town with as much cash as you did

well, even Claude here

couldn't figure out where it came from.

A man has got to have a goal, stick to it.

What'd you do, marry a rich widow

with a mattress full of cash?

No. I dug for it.

Where-where did you dig, George? In Denver?

Who told you it was Denver?

No-no-nobody told me, George. It was just a joke.

A joke?

Bartender.

'No offense, George.'

Operator, let me have the number of the FBI.

[instrumental music]

Mr. Whelan.

Yeah.

I'm Inspector Erskine, FBI.

In a way, I-I've kind of been expecting you.

[instrumental music]

[man on TV] 'Headlining the news today, a second suspect'

'in the million dollar Denver bank burglary'

was taken into custody.

The FBI reports the capture of George R. Whelan.

'Whelan, shown here was arrested by FBI agents'

'in Centerville, Maine.'

A third member and reported leader of the g*ng

'is still at large.'

'And now for you sports fans'

'in the race for the National League Pen..'

[knock at door]

Come in.

Well, did you see Larry?

Yes.

And?

I told him I couldn't marry him, that I still loved you.

You're not sorry, are you, Alison?

No.

Just hold me, Eliot, hold me tight.

Oh, Alison.

Hey, do you wanna do something that is absolutely wild

crazy, insane?

[chuckles] What?

Fly to Mexico City right now and get married. Ole.

What do you say?

I think I better say yes before you change your mind.

Oh, Eliot, I love you.

[laughs]

[dramatic music]

[Erskine] 'You mean Denton gave you no indication where he was going?'

Whelan, you and he were partners

but you know nothing about him

while he knows everything about you.

Now, I'm sure he thought it was safer that way.

But safer for whom?

He never talked much about himself.

For all I know, he could have dropped from another planet.

Except for a picture I saw once.

What kind of picture?

If I help you, would, would it make it easier for me?

We don't make deals.

It's not much of a reward, but it's not like I was

betraying a close friend.

What do you know?

The picture, it showed him on a pier next to a yacht.

He didn't have a beard then

and there was a pretty girl with him.

Was there anything in it that might tell us

where it was taken?

Yeah, there was a name on the back of the yacht.

It said, "Ms. Alison, West Palm Beach."

How long will you be gone?

Eliot said we'd be gone for quite some time.

We may even go to South America

'or Australia.'

Now, come on.

It won't be forever.

[doorbell rings] Oh, it must be Eliot.

Well, as long as you're happy.

There's a good chance Denton's true name

is Eliot Fielding, inspector.

The "Ms. Alison" now belongs to a yacht broker

here in West Palm Beach.

But Fielding used to own it.

Does he fit Denton's description?

Oh, yes, he does, sir.

He left here a year ago owing everybody in town.

Then he returned a few days after the bank job

and began paying his bills.

He even inquired about buying his yacht back.

Where is he now?

Well, agents have checked out the apartment

where he was staying, but he's not there.

As far as they could find out, he's left to be married.

Who's the girl?

Well, he used to go with a girl

by the name of Alison Stuart.

He named the yacht after her. I have her address.

[dramatic music]

Take good care of her, Eliot.

I will.

Come on.

Uh, why don't you go back inside and call the airlines

make sure the plane is leaving on time.

It's not gonna take you a minute, go on.

Okay.

[instrumental music]

Eliot Fielding?

[dramatic music]

FBI, Fielding.

[g*nf*re]

[instrumental music]

I'm sorry.

There was so much I wanted to say.

We could've had it all.

Why, Eliot? Why?

I had to be a winner.

[instrumental music]

He never could believe I loved him...as he was.

Maybe someone else could have reached him.

I don't think so, Ms. Stuart.

[Marvin Miller] Eliot Fielding recovered from his wound

and with George R. Whelan and Roy Mills

was tried and convicted in Federal Court

of bank burglary.

Fielding and Mills were also found guilty

of as*ault on Federal officers.

They were sentenced to terms in a Federal penitentiary.

Fred Elgin was tried and convicted

by Nevada authorities

of breaking and entering.

Wanda Moore was found guilty of being an accessory.

[theme music]
