[Judy laughs] I don't know
why I don't have an assistant.

There are people
that would be willing to help me.

But I'm territorial, I think.

So I'm worried about my one day
in November. That's gone now.

We lost that off day, huh?

The workload has increased,

but it's only increased
because the popularity of the cheerleaders

keeps getting more and more
each year.

And there's always more opportunities.

Oh yeah. Our workload has increased.

[Kelli] We've gone from ten home games

to ten Christmas shows,
halftimes, concerts,

corporate shows, media, press junkets.

And then we have confirmed,
the girls don't know yet,

our little concert participation
on the rd.

[Judy] That's before
Thanksgiving halftime?

Y'all are killin' me.

-[Judy] Y'all are killin' me.

[Haley] Judy's decided retirement
sounds really good right now, actually.

[Judy] I am probably very old-fashioned,

so it's hard for me
if things aren't done exactly right.

-Luckily, this one has long legs.

[Judy] My family…

they love it.

They… they know how busy I get,

and they know that during football season,
they don't get to see me as much.

But… if I even mention retiring,

my own kids,
my grandkids, are all like, "No! No!"

So we'll get rid of this row
to make it work.

[Judy] I didn't go to college.

I asked my mom and dad, and I wanted to,

and my mom was like,
"No, you won't be serious about it."

So I was like, "Okay!"
And that was the end of that.

I got married really young,

and two years after I was married,

that's when I decided to audition.

And the day I made it,
I came home and I told my husband.

I said, "I made it!"
He goes, "Oh my gosh! What do we do now?"

And I'm like, "I don't know." [laughs]

That's where it went.
I didn't know what I was doing!

I didn't know what I was getting into.

[interviewer] Some cheerleaders
become more famous or more recognizable.

Rumor has it that you're
one of the more famous ones.

Well, everyone's famous in their own way.

Once they put on that uniform
for the weekend,

you become an instant celebrity.

Just like the girls do now,
I worked a full-time job during the day.

I cooked dinner for my husband at night,
and then off to practice we went.

When I finished my fourth year,

I stepped right into
the assistant choreographer role.

Keep your eye right there
and wait to the very last minute,

whip your head around and catch it.

The job definitely is different today
than it was years ago.

I, in my head, can visualize things,

but my body doesn't really do it anymore.

Okay, here we go.

I… I think I could do everything, but it
just doesn't come out right sometimes.

And a lot of that
has to do with my health.

I have ankylosing spondylitis,
which is in your spine.

And my… my body
won't
work the way it used to.

I wish I did.

It's in my head.

I… I'm… I'm just not the same body
I used to be.

And those are sharp and hold.

Three and four, and then
you're gonna wrap across your body…

There's only one choreographer
of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, and…

I've held that for years.
I'm proud of that.

[wistful music continues]

I like to have that bond with the girls
and be with them every night.

I feel like they grow up
right in front of my eyes.

And it's been really
a special experience for me.

I try to be more vocal to the girls,

and I try to show them
how appreciative we are.

Like, I've noticed Chandi
needing a little more love.

Like she'll just come up to me
at the end of rehearsal,

for no reason, and give me a hug.

And she started saying,
"I love you, Judy."

And we probably
haven't said it every night,

but you do begin to love them.

You can't help that.

I hope to be remembered as a hard worker,

but I don't want that to be everything.

I want…

[gentle music playing]

to be remembered as warm.

And I want them to remember my hugs.

It's not so much the other parts,

but the personal part.

So what… what brings you here?

Well, I just wanted to discuss, um…
just how I've been feeling lately.

[nervously] I feel like
I've been so in my head.

And I just wanted to kind of talk
with y'all about it,

just so that I can, like, clear my mind
and, like, know where I stand.

In the beginning of the year,
I wasn't booked on draft day.

And then fast-forward to now,
I originally wasn't booked on F.

And then girls are asking me,
like, if I'm okay.

And it makes me feel
like I did something wrong, or…

But as a third-year veteran,
I feel like it's concerning to me

if I'm not getting booked

and you guys want to go
to lower tenures to book over me.

I just want to know.

There's a lot of shows that only ten
or people are gonna be picked for.

I hear what you're saying,
and I respect that.

I understand, if you're the only
third-year not picked for something,

where you could analyze that.

So I respect this conversation.

You've got a beautiful physique
and a beautiful presence on the team.

Is there anything specific you're doing
that's falling short?

No.

Um, in shows,
you were booked for Visit Oxnard,

our opening ceremonies.

You did a Taco Bueno event.
You did Texas Lottery.

You're in all three of our calendars.

I have girls that come to me and cry
'cause they're not in calendars.

I think, to answer your question,
psychologically,

you need to focus on the things
that you have been selected for.

Realize that there's girls

that all want and are deserving.

I've heard opposite comments.

I've heard comments
that you think the team needs you.

That we're lucky to have you.
That we… That if you…

I love this team,
and I love the girls so much, and I've--

[Amanda] Is that your guys' concern
that I'm not happy?

No! I just… I'm not sure you are.

[crying softly] If it has to do with
the contracts we were arguing earlier,

if that has anything to do with it…
I hope it doesn't.

[crying] But I hope you know that
I'm extremely passionate about this team,

and I do…

I do hope that one day
we can get the cheerleaders paid more.

We work extremely hard,

and I think all of these girls
would quit their full-time jobs

in order to be
a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader.

But why do we want people
to quit their full-time jobs

when that's what's
so impressive about y'all?

It is what's impressive about us all,

but we also do crazy things
in order to be here for this.

We put ourself under so much stress,

and our families under so much stress,

and if we could commit % to this,

and be able
to dedicate our time and energy--

-[Judy] We've been in the same boat.
-I know you have.

And I know you get it,
but I hope you know that

I was never trying
to go against your guys' will

or behind your backs or anything.

-[Kelli] We've talked about that.
-I know.

I don't feel that way.
I think conversations are… conversations.

-[Amanda] Yes, and that's all it was.

I respect your perspective.
I agree with you on many things.

And right now, at the moment,
if you're happy with the compensation

for this season's squad,

then my advice would be
to focus on being the best Amanda.

You teach more. You lead more.

You think about others more.

And things will feel

more purposeful.

[Jada] When it comes to pay,

I feel like we're kind of
at a standstill for now.

We were just kinda left in limbo.

Most of the girls,
like of us, decided that

we would like to make an effort

to make, you know, a change.

[Jada] We had discussed
not turning in our contracts.

We thought
if you don't turn in your contract,

they would have to fire you,
which would then be put on the Cowboys.

[Judy] Ready?

Five, six, seven, eight.

One, two, and three, four…

I know the girls got together,
but we weren't a part of it.

Kelli and I…

They kept it completely private.
They didn't come to us.

A walkout would have
really made me nervous, but, um…

I know that people have
to fight for certain things

to make changes, and I understand that.

[man] How did the Cowboys find out
that a walkout was gonna happen?

[laughs] I don't know.

I mean, I have my assumptions,
but… I don't know.

I did hear that someone on the team
was recording the meeting

and then sent it over to staff,
and it got back to Cowboys.

Whether that was true or not,
I don't know. I hope it wasn't.

[laughs] So within a matter of hours,

it changed from us feeling like
we could make a stand

to us feeling like nothing's gonna change.

[laughing]

[Armani] They pretty much said
we don't have to sign our contracts,

but just know by staying on the team,

you're agreeing to what's in the contract,
which is frustrating.

So I don't believe anyone signed anything,
maybe one or two people.

Did you ever turn yours in?
I panicked and turned mine in.

[Anna Kate] Well, when everyone was like,
"We're either turning it in or not,"

I'm not gonna be the one person
who turns it in out of our class,

so I did not turn it in.

[McKenna] I don't wanna lose my spot
on the team, so I'm gonna sign it.

Like, I don't know what to do.

[pensive music playing]

[Jada] This all happened, and I don't
think we had time to process it.

[Amanda] This season just picked up,
and it got really busy,

and it just kind of, yeah, dissipated.

Like, I was working a full-time job,

and I was on the phone in a meeting room

with attorneys every single day,

and I was in tears
every single day crying.

I think the emotional toll on all of us
just took it out of us.

And we were like, "We could continue
to push and fight, but we've got games."

We've got stuff coming up.

We don't even have time
in the day to continue to fight.

[crowd cheering in background]

[Anna Kate] I didn't try out thinking,
"I'm gonna make money."

No, I knew I was gonna have another job.

I choose to have another job.

I'm doing it as something
I want to do because I love to dance.

You do this, you know you're not
gonna get paid an insane amount,

but you do it because…

-You love it. It's an experience.
-You love it. It's your dream.

[Armani] Our expectations were not met,

but the fact that they even sat down
to listen to us,

that's a win.

Hopefully, because we had
this conversation this year,

in the future, they'll look at it again.

I know Kelli, really, and Judy,
they want us to be paid more.

They've expressed that,
and they've said at the end of this year

that they're gonna have a talk
with whoever decides.

[Jada] I don't know
if it's gonna happen this season,

but I'm hoping it happens eventually.

I have to rely on everyone that's gonna
be here after me to keep up,

you know, with making a difference.

from ages six to .

We got to pull in some rookies,
which was super helpful.

It is kind of their first camp experience.

They're all getting a taste

of what it is like
to kind of run these community events

on top of doing their normal DCC duties.

Sometimes camp's not for everyone.

You know yourself.

You know if you can run on
four hours of sleep,

and then come here in the morning,
and put on a smile,

even if you maybe are exhausted.

That's where the dog beds came into play.
We would finish camp.

We would have some leftover chicken
from whatever the kids ate from lunch.

And then we would turn off the lights
in the locker room

and curl up into our dog beds.

Then we'd wake up, freshen up some makeup,
and then go into rehearsal.

For most of them,
if they're in school or they have a job,

this is getting them ready for the season,
'cause it doesn't let up from here.

You guys ready to see your friends again?

[Jalyn] You have games
on top of rehearsals,

on top of performances,
on top of appearances.

We tell the new girls, our biggest piece
of advice is say yes to everything,

because this is only a short chapter
of your life, and you can sleep later.

[Judy] Training camp is busy,
but it's predictable.

All of a sudden when football hits

and the games start getting
back-to-back-to-back,

it just becomes very chaotic really fast.

For a rookie,
you have to learn to brace yourself,

because once the football season starts,

it's a whirlwind.

[Judy] Being a part of every halftime
and these special appearances

or these special performances
does put a lot on our plate,

but you have to take it as a compliment.

We get to a point
where it's kinda like one day at a time.

and scrub my uniform.

Because, to be so honest with you,

Besides the home games,
each performance is not mandatory.

So they want to be chosen
for the different shows.

It's two full minutes
of you ushering Santa Claus

and making sure he's not lagging behind.

You have to prioritize your time
because it takes over your life.

I just need to study this part.

And then I'll be done. Because I'm tired.

Doing college and DCC at the same time,

it's honestly funny to just watch myself
go through my day

and just be, like,
two different people in the same body.

I kind of feel like Hannah Montana.

That's what it feels like sometimes.

As hard as it is, as busy as it is,
it is a part-time job.

It's not a full-time job. It's part-time
and we get paid part-time.

do you guys think you put in a week?

or a boy that maybe you're dating,

or your fiancé, your husband,

you're gonna put a little extra spice
in that performance.

They're up there. They're taking videos.

And so I do think it gives you
a little extra push

'cause you know for sure
that their eyes are on you.

They're not watching the football game.

and you can get in your head a lot.

Um, last year, I didn't feel like
I was a great leader.

Like, I just felt very defeated.

And I feel like I relied a lot
on Kelcey, Claire, and McKenzie.

This year, my personal goal
is just to feel my best

and give it my all every performance.

And try not to have a bad day.
I mean, we're all gonna have bad days.

I have quite a few of them,
but you just gotta keep pushing.

And as long as I'm at practice,
happy, and…

really confident this year.

I think that's what I've been lacking
is my confidence.

[Chandi] Being a group leader
has been hard.

I never really got overwhelmed
as quickly as I do now.

Everything that's happened in the past
has really weighed on me a lot.

Um…

And I know it's, like,
a stressor for me and my relationship.

Before I knew Ryan,

I was going through,
like, a really weird breakup.

It was all rainbows and butterflies
at the beginning.

He kind of turned to drinking,

and things really started to shift.

[somber music continues]

[Joanna] When she first told me
about this relationship,

considering that I myself personally
had been in a couple toxic relationships,

I early on identified that
that's what was happening.

I saw how she was pulling away
from her family,

how she was pulling away from her friends,

how she was losing her confidence,

and that hurt me deeply.

I mean, I literally felt like
I was gonna lose her.

My two best friends on the team
at the time

noticed that I had bruising down
both sides of my legs.

I kind of pushed it aside.

[somber music continues]

[Chandi] Things progressively
got worse with him.

We broke up,

and at that time, I met my boyfriend now.

I started getting random messages

from many different fake numbers

describing exactly
what my boyfriend was wearing.

He… [sighs] He was a stalker.

One day when we were pulling
into my apartment,

I see him pulling out.

He was waiting for me.

I started driving to the police station.

He pulls up on the side of my car,
smashes his car door into mine,

gets out and starts threatening
my boyfriend's life.

He finally drives off.

We file a police report
for domestic violence,

harassment, and stalking.

From then on,

I feel like I always
have to have my head on a swivel.

[Jada] What?

-Oh! Is it?
-[Chandi] I don't think so.

[Jada] Okay.

[Chandi] Right when I was finally
feeling happy and at my peak again,

something would happen.

Like right before finals,
I got a call from the DA.

My ex was not charged
for domestic violence

because I didn't have evidence
for the first time he hit me.

Even though I had witnesses,

and the second time
I had photos and notes,

like, none of that even mattered.

I don't know what I can do from here.

I feel very hopeless and helpless.

[Ryan] There's tons of people

I'm constantly just being cautious about

when we go out in public
and things like that.

and just wanna live normal with Ryan,

and just us create a family, be normal.

But I think about it more than I want to.

And I don't want to put that on Ryan.

I've affected the relationship

We dated, then I broke up with him,

And I feel like that's just

We've done this for years.

named a retreat Refresh and Reboot,

which gives us the chance
to have time together as a team,

but it's not rehearsals.

It's not eight counts.
It's not rushing off the bus.

It's a time literally
for us to be together

and go somewhere fun.

where girls were really able

to profit off their name,

on some members of the team

that have quit their job

really great jobs, and I don't know.

We're all trying to figure out
how to be social media influencers.

the worst one at all of that,

but it's been really cool to see

in the TikTok world.

We're all trying to figure out
how to deal with the growth.

I think girls who have never posted
on social media are now starting to post.

You don't have to have the anxious shell
that you've been in.

I feel like I've gotten to see the rookies
in such a different light already,

which I think has been good,
because they, specifically this year,

have been one of the most
stressed group of rookies that I've ever…

Like, rookie year,
it's supposed to be about the hardships,

and it's supposed
to be about just being humbled, honestly,

and having character development.

Then third year, it's like,
"I have to choose for myself."

"Is this gonna be a good year,
how I wanna live it,

or am I gonna
let the anxiety of this environment

kinda sway my experience?"

So going in as a fourth year,
I'm not gonna lie,

this is the most fun I've ever had
on this team.

There have been people in the past,
they just come back to come back.

Are you doing it because you love it,
or are you taking up a spot

of someone who would genuinely be
excited to be here? You know what I mean?

I feel like the only thing that shows
if you're "moving on"

is if you're getting married
and having kids, and, like, that's…

[Kleine] What if you're already married
and you don't wanna have kids?

"Why would they retire?"

"They're not married yet."
I was like, "Is that the requirement?"

The main attractions
we have here at Nari Nari

is the underwater statue here.

"the Ocean Atlas."

It's a sculpted statue of a young girl

with her head in her hands,
leaning over on her side.

It gets the name "the Ocean Atlas"
because at the right time of day,

at the right tide, the top of the ocean
actually sits on her shoulder,

so it looks like
she's holding up the ocean.

We are on our way to a football game.

I think it was a nice refresh
that we needed.

Unfortunately, something happened.

and it is known by every single person
on the team,

on the staff.

After we came back from the Bahamas, and…

Chandi needed to take…

a leave of absence.

-[Judy] We had to go on with rehearsals.

Whether Chandi was there or not,

we had a team that needed to rehearse.

So we get to practice, and someone's like,
"Hey, you gotta take it down a notch."

Like, "Something happened."
And I was like, "What do you mean?"

"We just got back from the Bahamas.
What could've happened?"

[cheerleader] Yeah. Ugh.

-Why are we doing this?
-[tense music continues]

[cheerleader] I'm getting frustrated.
It feels horrible.

We walk into practice,
you could hear a pin drop.

[Jada] How are we
going to do this this game?

-I'm very anxious.
-[Megan] We should just stop.

[Jada] People need to be
put in their place.

[Jada] Like,
we all know something's going on,

and we're not getting any answers.

No one's speaking about it as a whole,

so everything is just being,
you know, whispered.

to take some time for mental health

or her personal mental health.
