[Japanese theme music playing]
BAKI-DOU:THE INVINCIBLE SAMURAI
[lyrics in Japanese]
[music fades]
[water splashing]
[Motobe] These four limbs of mine,
they've put up well with the selfishness
that I've inflicted upon them.
But tonight, they will be rewarded.
Huh?
Shibukawa-sensei?
Motobe, do you know why I've come?
I think I've got a pretty good idea.
[Shibukawa] I'm here to try and stop you.
[slurping]
And I'm thinking it's a lost cause.
Apologies. I can be brash.
Nobody wants me to do this,
but now it's become my personal duty.
I'm bull-headed, but I'm not misguided.
This question might seem strange,
but, Motobe, tell me.
How many hours a day are you training?
[Motobe] Uh, you want to know
how much I train?
Hmm…
I'm not sure how to even answer that.
[laughing] Don't tell me
you've been slacking off.
More than once a day.
Oh!
Multiple times a day, that's impressive.
Not quite. My heart strays
from martial arts a few times a day.
[Shibukawa gasps softly]
It usually happens
when I'm away from the dojo.
While eating, or brushing my teeth,
or when I'm distracted
by interacting with other people.
In those brief moments,
that's when I realize
that my mind has wandered.
Aside from times like that,
you're always honing your craft?
Yes, in bed even.
Both while I'm waking and perhaps asleep.
[slurping]
Sounds like a romance of passion.
You're married to the martial arts.
You know something,
Shibukawa, you're right.
A man's reach should exceed his grasp,
or what's a heaven for?
[Tokugawa] You can't!
Come on Motobe, you can't just barge in!
Besides, today is Pickle's turn!
- [clapping continues]
- Huh?
[clapping continues]
You see? You hear what they have to say?
- [Tokugawa] Hmm.
- [clapping continues]
[Motobe] Everyone, thank you.
[Tokugawa] Huh?
Wait, wait, wait! Hold on a damn minute!
Even if everybody else wants you to do it,
well, uh, I'm afraid it's not my decision.
Musashi has to decide.
[suspenseful music playing]
You're not gonna have much say
in the matter.
[Musashi] Hmm.
If you don't agree to fight,
I'll just backstab you.
- [Tokugawa gasps]
- Blinding powder. Nice!
[Musashi grunts]
[air whooshing]
[narrator] The surprise attack
was a success.
The Achilles tendon. I think this may be
a pain you're unfamiliar with.
[Motobe groans]
[air whooshing]
Effective techniques, indeed.
No permanent damage to my eye.
Blinding powder at close range,
reverse throws, ankle twists.
These are nothing new to me.
I've seen all of these employed
in my time.
Motobe, is that right?
- Challenge accepted.
- [music fades]
Hey! What are you doing?!
Don't see anyone else
smoking in here, do ya?
[Motobe] All right. [sighs]
It's tobacco. Back in your day,
you'd smoke from a pipe, right?
[sniffs] Hmm.
[sniffs]
[sniffing]
Apart from that one,
none of the others can be smoked.
[dramatic music sting]
[Gaia] He knows?!
It's been smeared
all over the sake bottle as well.
From the smell, I'd say it's blowfish.
You've resorted to using poison.
He poisoned them?!
And he saw through it.
He could even tell what kind it is!
Can he do that?
[Gaia] He's way ahead of him.
Unbelievable.
I've been perfecting these techniques
for years, and you dismiss them like that.
Did you expect them to work on me?
I didn't, but never had the chance before,
so I had to give it a try.
Yes.
Quite good.
I've got a clever idea, Motobe.
This smoke can be our signal
to resume our battle!
[dramatic music playing]
[Musashi grunts]
[groaning]
[pained grunt]
- [gasping]
- expl*sives too?!
No way!
You've gotta be joking!
[Gaia] Yes, that's it.
This might be the only way!
Get me outta here!
[Baki] That's right!
I am fine with all of this.
I don't care if it's poison or expl*sives.
I don't give a damn what you use,
just make it out alive, Motobe!
[chain rattling]
[Motobe] I took it from him.
He let go of it far too easily,
his sword, which I reckon he values
nearly as much as his life.
[Musashi coughing]
[narrator] In the throes
of a coughing fit,
Musashi emerged from the smoke…
and prepared to square off again.
[coughing]
So you had a smoke b*mb.
It's been a while since I smelled that.
[bones clicking]
You said this is an "Achilles heel"?
[dramatic music playing]
[Musashi] Hmm, I should be fine.
[narrator] He was able to gather himself
in about 30 seconds,
but in that time…
All right, then,
you've put an unsightly wound on my face.
How will you atone for that sin?
[narrator] Even with sword in hand,
Izo couldn't take one step forward.
[Motobe] Hmm.
You never cease to impress, Musashi.
It makes little difference that I am
the one who's now wielding the sword.
Your skills and prowess
still outshine my own.
Take it back.
- [slicing]
- [air whooshing]
[Musashi] Hmm.
[Sabu] His reflexes are incredible.
He grabbed it out of the air
like he was picking up his keys!
There isn't much I can do with this.
A sheath isn't a weapon.
[air whooshing]
[shot booming]
[all gasping]
[Musashi groaning softly]
- [dramatic music playing]
- What's the matter?
Did you take back more than you asked for?
[pained groaning]
Yes, that's it! It's the only way, Sensei!
- [chain rattling]
- [Motobe grunts]
[Musashi groans painfully]
[chain rattling]
[Baki] Come on, Izo. Now's your chance!
[Baki] He's getting an edge!
[intriguing music playing]
[Musashi] Hmm.
[shocked, disgusted gasping]
[Baki] Well that was disgusting.
He just shoved his finger
through his cheek,
and he didn't do for intimidation.
No. He's just that unhinged.
You loosened my back teeth.
I fought a weighted chain user
in the past, you know?
A certain Shishido.
But I never let him land
a single blow with it.
That's quite the achievement, Motobe.
[dramatic music playing]
He got it!
Now!
[straining]
[Motobe gasps]
[Baki] He barely has a grip on it.
[Shibukawa gasps] Impossible!
[Sabu] How can this be?
The key to a tight grip strength
is in the pinky and ring finger.
Just two of his digits are on par
with Izo's full strength.
Now then…
[metal clinking]
[Motobe gasping]
[Musashi] You've put an unsightly wound
on my face.
How will you atone for that sin?
How about Hachimonji?
Or across the torso, severing both arms?
A diagonal slash?
Or shall we split you in two,
cleaving the front from the back?
A parting gift.
How will you die? Choose!
[Motobe] Hmm-mm…
Hmm…
[music fades]
From old age?
Huh?
Why would you say that?
If you want to live a long life,
wouldn't it have been better
for you to live in quiet solitude?
So, why put yourself
in mortal danger here?
Hagakure, a manual on Samurai training
from the Edo period.
With this passage,
"The way of the samurai
is found in death."
[Musashi] Hmm…
Even your ways of the samurai
have seen an evolution.
Our lives are no longer
merely for serving our lords.
These days,
one's life's purpose is to protect itself.
And by extension, our lives are lived
to protect our family
and neighbors as well.
The way of the warrior has changed.
Its mission now, exclusively survival.
[Gaia] A short spear?
What'll he do with that?
On to the next one?
You're proficient with spears too?
If we measure sword skills
on a scale of 100, you get 500.
Whereas, my spear skills are,
on a good day, no better than 70 points.
That's not stopping me!
[narrator] Watching Izo's thrust,
Musashi thought,
"I wouldn't give this half a point."
But as he smirked to himself,
suddenly his thoughts were split.
[Musashi] Impressive, Izo.
A striking blow!
This isn't gonna be a thrust,
nor will it be a flurry.
Just one punch
with all my might!
[pained groaning]
Now, let's see if you can stay down.
We've grown. Things aren't like they were.
Since your time, our grappling techniques
have become far more powerful.
Your brain is scrambled inside your head,
and now,
it's mine.
- [slicing blow]
- [pained grunt]
[loud impact thud]
[dramatic music sting]
[intriguing music playing]
[narrator] He had been cut.
That blow did take me by surprise.
My head's still spinning.
You deepened this wound, too,
but the pain kept me awake.
Had you hit me with just your fist,
I might have actually
been rendered unconscious.
And, Motobe,
was that chain mail I felt?
[narrator] Chain mail,
a hauberk made of interlocking chains,
meant to protect the torso
from slash attacks.
[Baki] Wait, he's armored?
Then how was he cut?
[Gaia] His blade shouldn't have been able
to cut through.
The armor's intact.
But he's been injured.
Huh.
[narrator] A bulletproof vest is designed
to keep b*ll*ts from piercing through.
However, when tested
against a high-caliber g*n,
though the b*llet may in fact be stopped,
there is still tremendous force
behind the projectile,
endangering the body beneath.
This notion that chains will protect you…
[Motobe gasping painfully]
…did you really believe that?
[Jack] It's like when I fought him.
He was wearing that jacket
made of some kind of special fiber.
Completely destroyed my teeth.
Using the blunt side of a sword
to k*ll is easy.
I've even taken lives
with swords made of wood.
I thought you knew
my strikes were unparalleled.
Did you think
a flimsy layer of chain would stop them?
I see it all.
It's not just chain mail you're wearing.
You've got armor
covering your arms and legs.
[Motobe] Is that a problem?
[groans painfully]
Don't be ashamed. You fought bravely.
Now you die, Motobe.
TADATOSHI HOSOKAWA
Musashi, I've ordered this test
specifically for you.
Oh, and what is it we'll be testing?
[Hosokawa] The newly-designed helmet
you see here.
I had it forged by a blacksmith from Seki.
It's made using the highest quality steel,
which means its sturdiness
should be unmatched.
We subjected it to rigorous testing,
and so far, it has easily deflected
both wooden and long swords.
And now, you are the final test.
[perplexed music sting]
[man whimpering]
The color is deep,
and the steel is strong.
It has a cold luster.
The mark of Seki blacksmiths.
I doubt I could split it
with a single stroke.
[man] Mm-hmm-mm.
However, splitting a life in two
is an entirely different matter.
[both] Hmm?
Well, then…
[hesitating] Go… go easy on me.
- [Musashi] Hmm!
- [Hosokawa] Hmm?
Do you plan
to tell an opponent that in battle?
[all gasping]
[Musashi] Hmm…
A blow from the blunt side
would've done it.
In… incredible!
[dramatic music playing]
He's cut right through his wrist!
Still connected by a single layer?
That armor is serious.
[Gaia] Is it over?
[narrator] Imagine a pickaxe
being swung at a bulletproof vest.
The tip may not pierce the armor,
but the strike is deadly, nonetheless.
[Gaia breathing shakily]
You haven't forgotten, have you, Sensei?
This isn't just some thug
with any old sword.
[sword slicing]
[metal clattering]
[air whooshing]
[impact thud]
[Motobe groaning weakly]
Isn't that enough?
Stop the fight!
Oh-h*, Baki!
[Motobe] Don't be a fool.
Don't stop the fight.
It can't end now, like this.
I must protect them all!
[Baki] It not over!
A tackle?!
- [impact thud]
- [rock music playing]
- [pained groan]
- [Motobe breathing haggardly]
Thank you for this chance.
I thought it might be all over,
but now at the very last moment,
I've only got one left.
One more trick up my sleeve,
and I managed to set it up perfectly.
- He's got him!
- A… a sleeper hold?
[both] Choking from behind!
- [gasping]
- It's working!
Sensei, hold on!
[tense music playing]
[Motobe] It's no use, no use Musashi.
Not even a wound like that
will loosen this hold.
Neither of my legs can support me anymore.
And that last blow,
the chain mail may have stopped it
from cutting though,
but one of my lungs has collapsed
and he shattered my collarbone,
taking my right arm out too.
I cannot afford to unclench my jaw
even in the slightest.
'Cause if I do,
I'll no longer be able to protect myself,
my comrades, our modern era,
and yes, most importantly,
you, Master Musashi.
[rock music continues]
[Musashi] I apologize.
I'm sorry it took so long.
But I understand it now.
Just now, have I realized
the profound solitude you wield.
[Tokugawa] The match is over!
The results are indisputable.
[Baki gasps, sighs softly]
But then that means…
that means I was protected.
[tense music playing]
[narrator]There are certain feelings
that come with being protected.
The sweetness of liberation,
utter relief, and deep gratitude.
And there are feelings that come
when one's chances are usurped,
the bitterness of frustration,
nagging regret, and burning jealousy.
The fighters present felt
a strange mélange of all those emotions.
[clapping continues]
[confused groan]
Oh…
[uneasy music sting]
Huh…
The defeat is mine.
But before that,
how many times had I been cut?
Cut? Not quite. Those were messages.
I can send you a message
that says I've cut you.
But that's wildly different
from actually carving you to pieces.
In that case, during our fight,
how many times did you go easy on me?
You faced me in the ring,
but you don't consider me an opponent.
Your blade only ever struck me
where I was armored.
If you were serious, I don't see how
you could've ignored my weak spots.
You're transparent.
I've read your book.
In it, you wrote,
"Forge through 1,000 days of training."
"Refine thorough 10,000 days of training."
Musashi, I know you well.
Even now, you're refining.
Another opportunity
to learn even more, right?
You fought this battle
with a false assumption.
You assumed that you'd survive,
didn't you?
[dramatic music sting]
I just took advantage of your naivety.
In the end, I posed
a sufficient threat to your victory.
But I wasn't able to present
any real threat to your life.
Shall we continue, then?
Find out if I can?
Listen, Motobe.
- [Motobe] Hmm?
- [footsteps padding]
[Motobe groans painfully]
[Musashi] I appreciate the sentiment,
but today, the victory is yours.
[Japanese theme music playing]
[music fades out]
