three types of competition.
You could be playing
in a tournament.

Or you play in friendlies,
which are exhibition games.
These friendlies are very much
a proving ground.
They are places
for these players
to make an impression
on the coaching staff.

- We've had to, you know,
really understand and adjust
to what Mauricio
is wanting from us.
That's competition.

what league you play in.
You know, we have guys here
that play in the Prem,

the top league in France.
It definitely gives me
a chip on my shoulder,

I've got to step up my game.

I think
that's a good mentality
for the team to have.

late April '24.

tournament of our generation.

- I grew up in Almere
in the Netherlands.
Since I was young
and I could walk,
I always wanted to play
with a football.
- Sergiño was a withdrawn kid,
basically a loner.
They noticed that
at school too.
They asked me to put him

since I played soccer,

that he went in soccer.
- He was a tough coach.
My dad,
he was born in Suriname.
He grew up
in Brooklyn, New York,
and he fought
in the Vietnam w*r
and spent over 25 years
in the military.
- I was drafted.
I went to Vietnam.
What more patriotic can you be?
You've given your all
for the country.
You went to w*r
for the country.
You sacrificed yourself.
Those were the morals
and the principles
that were instilled in us,
and that's actually the key
of soccer.

much all I can in my spare time
to try and get it right.

But the reality is,
I'm not starting player
on the team at the moment,
and I've not played
a U.S. game for a year now.
So the main goal is to come

than I did going into it,

If you make March,
that gives you the opportunity

yourself into those roster
spots before the World Cup.
And if you're not
on those friendly rosters,
chances are you're not going
to be on that World Cup squad.
When March comes around,
with the margins being so thin,
I need to be there.
I need to be on that roster
if I want
my best chance
of playing meaningful games
at the World Cup in 2026.
I'll definitely be eagerly
awaiting that phone call
making sure
that I'm playing to the best
of my ability at that time
so that they have
no choice but to call me in.

And so Matt Freese
has to remember
what it took to get
into this job,
and he's got to do
everything he can to keep it.

back to--to where I used
to be a fan in the stands.

I was born in Philly.
Growing up, I played
pretty much every other sport.
Soccer was probably
my favorite one to play
but not the one I was best at.
When I grow up, I want to be
a professional soccer player,
and that's my favorite sport.
I loved it so much, so I put
a lot more work into soccer
than any other sport.
I would wake up
before high school.
My mom would drive me
to the field,
and I would just
play by myself.
- Matt was looking
at a number of colleges
with soccer in mind.
Now, of all the schools, if
you're going only for soccer,
you might not choose Harvard.
He chose Harvard.
His older brothers had gone.
His dad had gone.
- After my freshman year
of college,
I had a conversation
with my mom,
and it was clear at that point
that professional soccer
was not just in my future,
but it was my present.
Yes, I could finish my college
in a normal time frame,
and stay there,
and then go pro.
But I didn't want
to just go pro.
I wanted to get
to the national team.
And the earlier
you become a pro,
the earlier those looks
start to happen.
You know, it's a big regret,
but I didn't really include
my dad in that conversation.
I knew his stance on it.
He was a neurosurgeon
and wasn't the biggest fan
of me choosing
this career path.
- Matt left Harvard 2019
when he signed with the Union.
I say dropping out--
that was my phrase for it--
but leaving college
to turn pro.
And I get it, but it was still
a lot to--to figure out.
He talked to me for a while.
He said, I've managed my
career so far, which he had.
He had been so mindful,
purposeful,
strategic, whatever word.
Trust me, I've got this.
- Freese is up.
He's ready to go in, JB.
- He's a homegrown player,
Union Academy.
- I wasn't sure that it was
going to pay off,
but I wanted to give it
everything I could.
- Patrizio waiting for it,
just settles it down.

- Over time, my dad started
to come around to it.
He saw me play
in New York City, which was,
I think, a really big moment
for him.
He was like, oh, my God.
Like, he's playing
at Yankee Stadium.
Like, this is cool.

Freshman year of college,
he was diagnosed with cancer.
In the summer of '21,
he passed away,
um, which was--
you know, it was tough.

I think now,
four years after he passed,
if he were to be alive
and see what was happening,
there is literally no question
in my mind
that he would be proud.
He was also a very big fan
of America,
and being able to put on
the jersey,
the U.S. crest
and the U.S. flag,
I feel like my dad
has got to be, like,
looking and seeing
some of this happen,
and it just makes me happy.

And then to have not played
as much as maybe I wanted to,

If you look

minutes, something like that.
There were times
where I came to my room
and just yelled into a pillow.
There was times where I was
on my knees praying.
Just like, why?

And through that,
I've had to recognize
I'm not on the pitch
as much as I want to,
but what can I do for the team?

I've got now a chance
to close out 2025,
and this will be

To get the call-up and to see

of decades of work.

When you look
at Christian Pulisic,
it's been up and down.

meanwhile, has kind of
had his era at Juve mostly
defined by difficult moments,

Every step I took, even
on a good day, I'd be like,
this is going to hurt.

And it really messes up
your mind.
Fast-forward a few months
and a lot of different
recovery methods
and stuff here and there
and treatments, injections,
time away, time playing.
I feel like there's a big hump
that I had to get over,
and I feel like I'm over it.
And lately, like,
I've been feeling probably
the best I've felt
in, like, a really long time.

- Now I don't step
on the pitch worrying
if I'm going to be in pain.
I just look forward to actually
playing and doing good,
even just see what I need
to work on
going into the World Cup too.

It was great to see my name
on the sheet again.
And I could feel how happy
everybody was for me,
because they know how hard
I've been working
to get this opportunity again.
My last three games for the
national team were all losses,
and that's, like,
a sour pill to swallow.
It got to a point
where I'm thinking, man,
if I never get the chance
to play ever again,
like, for the national team,
my last game is, like,
just sh*t.
- After training,
Matt called me,
and he let me know that he is
going to be starting.

I'm so excited for him.

of pressure on them.
We did a lot of great things.
Didn't seem either game

really out of control,
but little moments,
or just being a little bit
more clinical.
And I feel really close,
and I feel like
we're in a good place.
- Making this World Cup roster
would mean everything to me.
Since the day that I missed out
on the last one,
being able to be in that '26,
going to be, you know,
one of the proudest moments
of my life, definitely the
proudest moment of my career.
- I've dreamed of this since
I was, you know, just a kid.
I've left everything

and I hope it's enough.

you know, now I have a chance

and I have a smile
