Richard Rawlings and prodigious mechanic Aaron Kaufmann seek out forgotten and abandoned classic cars for restoration at their Gas Monkey Garage.

13x07 - Keeping It Shelby

Post by bunniefuu »

Richard:
All the monkeys to the table.

I have got some
good news for you.

Usually when you say
you have good news for us,

it means
you want us to work late.

From the army, major general
frank muth just came by,

and he is in charge
of the golden knights.

-Yeah, that's the sky diver.
-Yeah. Yes.

Russell: They jump out
of perfectly good airplanes.

Mike: With hopefully a perfectly
good 'chute on.

He has offered to take us
all sky diving.

-All of us?
-Are you kidding me?

Richard: But if the galaxie
is not finished,

then you're not
going sky diving.

I got to get the motor
down in that car.

-I got a floor to put in.
-I'm going, russell's going,

you wusses.

-I'm going.
-Sounds like russell's scared.

Yeah, russell is scared,
I don't like heights.

-We're jumping out of a plane.
-We're going. See you all later.

-You want to jump together?
-No.

-Strapped to each other?
-No.

[ tires squealing ]

-whoo!
-Right now on "fast n' loud"...

-Boom!
-Whoo!

Narrator: ...Hot rod hunter,
richard rawlings,

and his crew of monkeys...

-Did I make it?
-Yep.

Narrator: ...Are hurtling
towards lift off...

Hey, we're
ready to go.

...As they rush to complete a
warp-speed build

of a '68 galaxie xl.

-Oh-oh, man.
-Dude. Whoo.

Narrator:
But a failure to fire...

The wires could be
in the wrong order.

-That could be.
-...Stalls the launch.

-Come on, baby.
-Apparently, that wasn't it.

-Then...
-Look at that.

-Wow.
-...Richard digs up a classic.

Richard:
I've never seen that much dirt
on a car.

-And...
-Why did you talk me into this?

Narrator:
...Richard and the monkeys
take a leap of faith.

-what a downer.
-That sucks.

-What do you have to do now?
-Re-paint it.

Literally
re-paint it?

But color and clear,
or just clear?

We'll take it
and we'll start over.

Do like what we do
on our nice ones,

which means the paint crew
ain't going home tonight.

The monkeys have painted
themselves into a corner,

and they're scrambling
to get back on track

with our current situation.

You see, several days ago,
I bought what I thought

was a super clean
1968 ford galaxie xl.

How about 11? Cool.
-You got a deal.

Hey, do we get a chance
to buy it back?

What are you going
to do with it?

Richard: I want to give
these guys courtesy

of having the first look.

And the other day,
they reached out,

said they were going to
be coming through dallas,

asked if they could stop by,
and I said, "sure, come on by."

it's good to have
interest this early,

but we have even more pressure
to get it done on time.

I gave the monkeys seven days
and $6,000 to clean it,

lower it, and re-paint it.
That's it, should've been easy.

But as soon as we got
it into the garage,

the monkeys started
poking around

and found heavy
rust in the rockers

and the quarter panels.
-Does it ever stop?

-And scaling on the chassis.
-It's not looking good.

They decided to go against my
build request to keep it simple,

and decided to take
the whole damn thing apart.

Why did we do all this?

The large gaping rust holes
in the quarter panels.

[bleep].

Richard:
Amazingly, they were able
to repair the rust damage

and re-paint the car
in record time.

But unfortunately for them,
I mean, mike coy,

when he showed me the paint job,
I hated it.

It's got more orange peel
and waves in it,

you can't even see
the reflection here.

The reflection moves.
Here's what I think.

Put it back over there,
take it back apart,

whatever you got to do,
re-fix it.

Work all night if you have to.

I want it right, and I'm not
giving you any more days,

so you better get busy.

-Alright, let's strip it.
-Yep.

Honestly, richard's problem
with the paint is pretty legit.

We only had time
to block sand it once,

which didn't fully
even out the surface.

So, when you look at the paint,

it reflects the little waves
and imperfections

and lacks that awesome
mirror finish.

So this time
we're going to do it right.

We're going to strip
the car back down

and block it two more times
between the layers of primer,

and then apply
the final prime and paint.

It'll take over 16 hours,

so we're working
through the night.

And if it all goes well,
we'll finish around dawn

with a smooth glossy galaxie xl.
Looks good to me.

I can see your reflection
in it damn good. Yeah.

I don't see
nothing wrong with it.

Other than the reflection
of your face, that's about it.

Perfect. We've still got
to buff the deck lid,

but we can do it in the morning.
-It is the morning.

-you like it?
-We are just finishing up on it.

If you are good with it, we will
get it shipped over there.

It looks just as good,
if not better.

This is a great car.

Russell, come on, I mean, I had
mike coy freaking out

thinking he was going to
have to paint it again,

but like a true new yorker,
russell opened his loud mouth

and now everybody knows
what I was planning.

Ten times better.

See what happens when you take
the time to do it right?

We're doing it fast because you
keep telling us to do it fast.

-Yeah.
-Speed makes money.

No, I get it, but it also makes
less than awesome paint jobs

that you send back
and have redone.

It really looks good.
It looks great.

Alright, let's get it
over the other side,

get it on the frame,
and we only got three days left.

If we get it done
before your time frame,

can we have
a couple of days off?

If you don't get it done
in my time frame,

you can have
a lot of days off.

-Alright.
-We'll get it cleaned up

and get it over there.
-Yep.

-Hell, yeah, bunch of days off.
-That's not what he means.

richard: We are in the [bleep]
sticks, man.

Russell: What the hell?
Wasn't it just 70 degrees

when we bought
the galaxie here?

Richard: It's so much colder
than it was last week.

Minnesota weather is crazy man.

Dude, this is out here
in the middle of nowhere,

I don't even know how you find
out that there's a car out here,

but my buddy called me
and said this dude

has a '69 rs four-speed camaro,
and on top of that,

even more rare, it's brown
with a white vinyl top.

My first car
was a brown camaro.

-Was it?
-Yep. I bought it for $75.

Richard: Wow, that's crazy.
When it comes to muscle cars,

'69 camaro, you know, is pretty
much the top of the list.

The '69 camaro was part of
the first generation of camaros

that ran from 1967 to 1969.

'69 had all the same drivetrain
as previous years,

but all new sheet metal
which gave the car

a much sportier appearance.

The new door skins, rear quarter
and rear balance panels

gave it a lower,
more aggressive looking stance,

and the grille was redesigned.
The rally sport, or rs,

was an appearance package that
included black painted grille,

hidden headlights, fender
striping, and an rs badge.

♪ chevrolet ♪

-hi, folks, we're here.
-You bet ya.

-How you doing?
-Not too bad.

-Richard.
-Doug schleusner,

glad to meet you.
-How are you?

I'm doug schleusner,
I'm a farmer,

I raise corn and soy beans
and keep very busy.

Richard:
Let's go check it out.

Doug:
I bought the '69 camaro in 1978.

I really don't want to sell it,

but when I heard richard
was interested,

I just decided I'm going
to just present it to him

and hope he enjoys it.
-Right on. So where's it at.

-Wow.
-Oh, super cool.

-Oh, yeah. There it is.
-Digging it.

-That is freaking cool.
-Beautiful.

White vinyl top.

Richard: Really? It's white
somewhere underneath there.

Oh, yeah, I guess
there is a little white.

-Thanks. It's so cool.
-It's a great car.

Yeah, front frame rails
look nice, too.

Richard:
Got a little bit of rust
starting, but not too bad.

Doug:
And you can see it has truly
been sitting here for years.

-Yeah.
-I mean, it's in decent shape.

When was the last time
it ran?

Probably 1985
when I took it to arizona.

That might've been
the last time I ran.

[ laughter ]

richard:
Basically, this car is dustier
than russell's gym clothes.

It's unbelievable
how thick the dust is.

You couldn't even tell
the top was white.

But there's no problem because
it's just dust, not rust.

Do you know if it's ever
been wrecked or anything?

There's one little
dent up front.

But you don't think it was
ever wrecked or put together?

-No.
-Oh, here's the center console.

Great.
-There is a center console?

Yeah. Yep, the center
console's right there.

Russell: Is that the drive
shaft from this?

-Yeah, it is.
-This is a complete car.

Richard: No major body damage
and all the original parts

are sitting in the car.

-Black interior?
-Black interior.

Nice.

Doug: It's 60 some thousand
actual miles.

-67.
-Yep.

Richard: Plus the interior's
in good shape

and it's got low mileage,
you know, good original car,

even with a few dents and dings
and a little bit of rust,

yeah, I'll take it.
-Checks all the boxes.

Richard:
If I can get doug to sell it
to me for the right price.

So, how much money
are we talking about?

Well, I hear they're worth
$100,000 some days.

[ laughter ]

you must be growing
corn whiskey out there.

It was a very nice car when I
bought it, I'm being honest.

At one time I owned five '69
camaros. I love '69 camaros.

Who doesn't?

I follow the trends
on what '69 camaros are worth,

and I guess I'm not willing
to give this car away,

but I'm willing to be fair.

So when we talked on the phone,
you were around 15 grand,

and I'm thinking 10.
-No, I can't do it for that.

I got a friend of mine
that worked for

hendrick motor sports for 22
years that wants to build

one of these, and he would
be happy to have it.

Russell: But he's not
standing here.

Sure it's cool,
but at the same time,

it doesn't run,
it's been sitting there forever,

it's full of dust
and dirt and cat prints,

and he's going to have to
come down a little bit.

Well...

I would honestly like
to see you build it

because I would be very proud
to say you built my car.

Well that's awesome.
Alright, so here's the deal.

I think I've got him right
where I want him, I've got cash,

his mythical buyer isn't here,

and if I can get it under 15,
I'm in.

We just have to come
to an agreement.

So, where we at, $12,500?

That would work for me.

Cool. Here. Done.
Thank you.

Russell: How'd we skip 11?

Richard: Let's get this thing
dug out of here, guys.

Doug: Richard says $12,500,

I decide that's a fair number
for both of us,

and I'm glad to accept
that from him.

Richard:
He and I are going to go sit
in the warm

and do some paperwork,
count some money,

and you guys get this car
ready for the wrecker

to come pick it up.
I bought the car, he wanted 15,

I gave him $12,500
after trying to get him to 10,

so I just got a k*ller deal
on a '69 camaro.

And on top of that, I get
to leave this frozen tundra.

Oh, suck it up,
it's not that bad.

Well, that's because you have
like a dead animal on your face.

-Whoo!
-Coming up on "fast n' loud"...

The monkeys have something
to say

about richard's mud bucket.

-The dirtiest camaro ever.
-You bought this dirt ball, huh?

Narrator: And the galaxie build
is taking off.

Mike:
You happy with it?

I was happy
with it the first time.

I thought
it looked great, too.

Jason:
Dude, I don't think this car's
ever been --

I know the motor's
never been apart.

Just want to get it
back together

and get it running
and get it out of here.

I'm going to put
a seal kit on it,

make sure this water pump's
not leaking,

put a new distributor seal
on it, new thermostat,

and call it good, paint it,
and put it back together.

We're got just three days left
on the galaxie,

and there's still a ton of work

left to be done.
-Alright.

We should have
that chassis back today.

Jason:
I may go ahead and replace
the oil pan, too,

because it's looking
pretty rough.

While the galaxie chassis
is out for powder coating,

we're giving the motor
a quick once over.

That means cleaning it up,

and after mike paints
it the proper ford blue,

I'll replace
the damaged oil pan,

and button it up with
all new gaskets and seals.

A lot of grime.

They'll be almost anywhere
there's metal on metal,

and their function is crucial
to providing an airtight seal

to avoid leaks of liquids
and gases.

That's what a 335 horsepower
428 v8 should look like.

Nice and new.
-Come on back.

Come on back.

Oh, for the powder coat.
We got the chassis back.

-Well, how's it look?
-We'll have to wipe it down.

-And they got everything back?
-Everything.

Can't really ask
for more than that.

Jason: We bring the chassis back
from the powder coater

and it was obvious,
it was the right decision.

By separating the frame
from the body,

we were able to clean
and resurface every part of it

and make
everything look brand new,

and I know that it's right.

-This worked out great.
-Watch your ankles.

Jason:
Hey, russell, you want to grab
the jack stands?

Grab the other two then.
If we left it in the car,

we could never have
gotten any of this.

The chassis, absolutely ready
to start assembling,

and we will have a motor
transmission in it real soon.

Okay, we're ready to go.

Put these together, we can
drop it right in the car.

We're ready to bolt
right to the chassis

and everything just plug
and play at that point,

which is good
because one more delay

and we'd miss our deadline.

Does that look like our cross
member's in the right place?

-Yeah, it does.
-She's on herself now.

-Okay.
-Awesome.

We've put a lot on there,
we've got the motor in,

we've got the transmission in,
we've got suspension waiting.

Damn. Dude, look at these
beasts.

Jason: Now we have to make up
some time

by throwing all the suspension
parts on to the chassis.

This upgrade
will give the galaxie

the more aggressive stance
we're after,

and better handling too.
We are knocking this thing out,

we're making
really good progress.

Now all we lack on the front
is the steering.

Pure muscle.

-what's next?
-Back half.

Jason:
Let's do the rear end.

Now that we've got all the front
suspension and brakes on,

it's time to move to the rear.
That's the last thing we can do

to this chassis
before we get the body back.

-Hold on.
-Sounded solid.

-Better?
-Better.

Jason: Luckily we've got
this pure muscle kit

with all new control arms,

and we've got our '59 rear end,
it's all the parts we need.

Throw some bolts at it
and we're pretty much done.

-That's awesome.
-The front turned out

really well, too.
-Yeah, it looks nice up there,

huh?
-Yeah.

Coming together.
-Cool.

there it is, second owner,
'69, rs, four-speed camaro,

chocolate brown
with a white vinyl top,

original paint.
Look at that.

-Wow.
-Yeah. This is great.

-Really dirty.
-Wow.

Mike: I've never seen that
much dirt on a car.

Richard:
After being shipped over
1,000 miles from minnesota,

the '69 rs is finally here.

-Wow!
-Oh, super cool. Digging it.

Richard: It was an honest
to god barn find,

and I got a k*ller deal
on it for only $12,500.

Now, it might not be
the cleanest car in the world,

but it's in pretty great shape
for a 50-year-old car.

There it goes!

Richard: Do not wash this
and I want it indoors.

Hey, guys, we need some hands.
-Alright.

-Oh, what is that?
-The dirtiest camaro ever.

-Hey, I need gloves.
-A camaro?

-Hey, you love chevys.
-Did you get it

at the bottom of a lake?

-No, at a barn.
-Where does it come from?

-That's 40 years of barn dirt.
-Who wants to get in and steer?

-Not this guy.
-I ain't getting in there.

I'm putting
tony in there.

-Oh, god.
-There you go.

It's the fastest
this thing's gone in years.

It weighs about an extra
500-pounds worth of dirt.

-Which door?
-Glass door. Glass.

Tony: My hand like
stuck to the dash.

-Mush. Mush.
-A little to the right.

-Alright. Got no brakes.
-Hey. You look tough.

-You bought this dirt ball, huh?
-Is tony still alive in there?

It smells
and tastes bad in there.

-Why you all breathing so heavy?
-That's a long push.

Yeah but
there's like seven of you.

Hey, trust me,
we can go take it back over

and let you push with us.
-Oh, I'm not doing it.

Alright. What are we

doing with this?
-Yeah, exactly.

Everybody else
tries to go too far resto mod

and it starts getting stupid,

or they try to do too far
cheap, and it's not cool.

Believe it or not, when it comes
to true barn finds,

a lot of true hot rod guys are
into originality and perfection.

Too much restoration
can actually ruin the value.

I've got a customer
that is stopping

by the shop that might buy it
exactly as it is, dirt and all.

Let's leave it alone until then.
Since it's a 50-year-old

hot rod, there's a good chance
that the buyer's

going to want it
as original as it is,

so I'm going to
leave it untouched

and see what happens next.
-Don't touch, it.

You know what the white crap
is in bird crap?

More bird crap.
-That makes sense.

Hey, by the way,
we work on this side.

-Whoo-hoo. Nice.
-We got budniks for the galaxie?

Damn right. Let's see
what these things look like.

Damn, those are sick.

-You remember how to do this?
-I remember.

Mike: But if we don't get
the galaxie done in time,

richard's not going to go let
us jump with the golden knights.

I'm pretty stoked
that we got the budniks.

Budniks have always been
one of my favorite wheels,

and actually this style
and the powder coat on it,

I think is going to go
really good with our car.

I can't wait to get them
mounted up

and get them on the car.
I think they're going to look

really good.

I got to tell you,

the paint crew
is really taking a beating,

working all night
to get the paint just right,

but we're part of the big gas
monkey team here,

and ready to do
whatever it takes

to get this build done on time.

mike:
I say we get the body over here,
get it on the lift,

and then we'll roll
the chassis underneath it.

we got the car over
to the mechanic side,

and we're getting it ready
to put on the chassis.

Looks great from here.
You happy with it?

I was happy with it
the first time.

I hear you, me, too,
I thought it looked great, too.

Hey, you guys ready
for the chassis?

We got to figure out
these front mounts.

You got a lot of that
hanging in there, josh.

Josh: Yeah, guys, that's not
sitting on the lift right.

Are you kidding?
You guys are nuts.

I'm just going off the old marks
that are on the thing.

Mike: If we drop this,
we're all back to square one.

-Barely.
-Got to come down

a touch for me.
-Okay. You ready?

-Okay, good.
-You sure about this?

-Yeah. That'll hold.
-If it falls off the lift,

it'll just be par
for the course.

little more. Right there.
Bring her down.

Dude, this is
a good major next step.

Hell yeah,
I'm excited for it.

Alright, what have we got,
besides a beautiful paint job?

-Want to push it back?
-Looks good.

-Oh-oh, man.
-Dude.

Whoo! She'll stink bug,
but she's looking good.

I like the color
actually with this.

I didn't know about the color

of wheels with that color,
I like it.

-Those wheels are sick.
-I'm in.

And removing the vinyl top
though, that's where it's at.

Look how fast, it looks slick.
-Oh, yeah,

that's totally different.
-All we lack is finishing up.

Well, yeah.
Every time that's all we lack.

Well, there's just
a few key things,

and then you can drive away.
-I mean, more specific.

Whoo!

-Coming up on "fast n' loud"...
-What are you doing?

-Russell's not making the cut.
-No way that's going to work.

Narrator:
And richard's surprised
with the trans am caravan.

What is going on, dave hall?

-We're up to 140 cars.
-What?

Hey, josh, you want to visualize
this with me real quick?

Grab a 90 or something...
-Here's a 90.

...Hold them up in
there and let's see.

-I love these kits.
-Yeah.

Car's back on the chassis,
everything's looking good.

Trying to get the exhaust
knocked out.

It's the last thing we need
underneath the car,

and then the quicker
we get the exhaust on,

the quicker everybody
can get back on the car.

Right now, it's a real pain
in the butt being in the air.

It actually snakes right through
here on the steering line.

-Ooh, that's a tight one.
-Yeah.

That's as far
as it goes, right?

Yeah, that's all the way,
so it's a tight fit,

but that's how it was factory.
-Okay.

Our other trick is we only
have two and a half right now,

and that's smaller
and that's like two,

so gotta do a little adapter
on the factory donuts

because we didn't
get headers.

At least it's got
a nice good clearance here.

If we dense it in here,
keep it in tight.

Yeah. I forget
what they were like factory

because they were all
rotted away, remember?

So bad.
-And then this offset one,

that'll bring it
right out through here.

This will be the snake.
-Yep. Cool.

It's busy in that corner,
so it's going

to take a lot of cutting,
splicing, and welding.

We're just gonna have
to get after it.

As far as clearance
with the tire,

with the gas tank,
with the chassis, with the body,

there's just no room
for us to go

and actually hide
and tuck the exhaust,

which is giving us a problem
because we want it to look good,

we don't want it
to be all funky looking,

but on this car,
there's no other choice.

Josh: The factory exhaust
is an h-pipe.

There's two long pipes connected
with one horizontal pipe,

that's where
the exhaust gases mix,

hence an h-pipe.

Jeremy:
For our new exhaust system,

we're going with
an x-pipe set up.

The x-pipe will allow us
to equalize the back pressure,

giving us more horsepower
at higher rpms.

I feel like there should be
a king sitting on this.

Jeremy:
Yeah. We're going to hold up
on doing the tail section

until we have a bumper
to know what to line up to,

but other than that,
this part is done.

Russell:
For everybody who thinks
I don't do anything,

I'm the problem solver.
-What are you doing?

Russell:
I am handling what I heard you
complaining about.

Are you green
with envy?

I went to richard
with this tail panel

trying to figure out
what we were gonna do.

There's no reproduction
part available,

so we have to make
the original one work.

We sent it out
to get it polished up,

but it's still kind of trashy.

And after tossing around
some ideas,

we ended up back to how it
come off the car --

flat black with just the raised
parts left in chrome.

I know he didn't want
to put it on like this

because if you can see it,
it's pretty beat up, you know,

and it just doesn't look good.

Just for [bleep]
giggles.

Mike:
Russell, bless his bearded
little heart,

thought he could tape it off,
but getting clean,

straight lines is going to be
impossible on this piece.

Dude, there's no way
that's gonna work.

Why is that
not gonna work?

I mean, I'm almost there,
I just started it,

I only have 2, 4,
6, 8, 10, 12,

-What's in your pocket?

Because it looks like you cut
that out with a pocket beaver,

like you had a little beaver
in your pocket,

and you took him out
and you cut the --

I just started!

Not one of those lines
is straight.

But I just started,
I'm getting the bulk away

and then fine tune it,
like a sculptor,

you take a big piece
of marble

and you remove
it little by little.

-See that nick right there?
-I'm not done yet.

How do you fix that?

Touch up paint,
nail polish.

Because it's already over.
No, it doesn't work that way.

Okay, so then how about this,
smart guy, paint the whole thing

and just sand down
the high surfaces.

That's kind of what I had
thought about doing.

Mike:
My solution is to paint it,

then carefully sand down
the paint from the high spots

to reveal the chrome underneath.
If we mess up, the paint...

Stop, don't put negative
in the universe.

If we mess up the paint,
we have to re-paint.

So that's the key
is to not mess up the paint.

Ugh, I hate doing this.
-It'll be fine. I'll hold it.

There's a lot of paint there.
-Mm-hmm.

It's going
to take forever.

I want to get this done on time
so we can go sky diving.

Ugh. You don't think
it's soft enough

we can just scrape it like
with a razor blade?

We could try. You got a blade?
-Yeah.

look at that!
It's all about the suggestions.

Sometimes those who don't know
make the best suggestions,

that's where the saying,
"from the mouth of babes,"

because babes are innocent,
and they don't know anything.

Mike:
Okay, credit where credit's due,
russell,

he came up with a good solution.

Wow, that actually
doesn't look too bad, mike.

It's a small detail,
but details are what separates

a good paint job
from a great paint job,

and I don't want richard
sending this piece back,

so I'll have jason sign off
on this one,

and if it doesn't fly,
well, I could always

blame it on russell.
-Dude, I like that.

Right?

-You like that better?
-Yeah. I think that's great,

because once you put the upper
stainless on it.

And then it ties into the
grille.

And then the bumper ties it --
yeah, absolutely.

-Well then it's a go.
-Yeah, absolutely.

Mike:
Richard will really like it,
but I don't wanna jinx this.

[ engine revving ]

-alright.
-We're here.

-We made it.
-We made it to gas monkey. Whoo!

Bandit run's here.

what is going on, dave hall?

Well, I thought I'd bring you
a few friends

to have a car show, man.
How we doing?

Kick a*s, kick a*s.
How we doin', man?

Richard: I got a good friend
named dave hall that owns

restore a muscle car
up in nebraska,

and basically his kind of niche,
if you will, is trans ams.

-What's up, dave?
-What are you guys up to?

Richard:
This is freaking ridiculous,
man. Holy crap.

He might have to be
my new money friend.

And about 14 years ago,

he started having a thing
called the "bandit run."

they join up at one city
and they drive

across this great nation of ours
in "smokey and the bandit" cars

and chase truckers

and chase women
and drink beer and [bleep],

I should've joined
this thing yesterday.

The first year
we started with 40 cars,

but I think we're up
to 140 cars.

-What?
-Yeah.

I'm dave hall
with restore a muscle car,

we're actually here
with the bandit run.

We've got people from canada,
new york, arizona, california,

all over the country.

Yeah, working with burt,
he was a great guy.

And right now, if he was to look
at all these trans ams,

he's looking down from heaven
and smiling like crazy.

Hell yeah, he is.
I mean, he was awesome.

I got to work with him
a little bit, too,

and, you know, hell, I grew up
watching all those movies.

I think I'm gonna start
a "stroker ace" run,

let's go raise some hell.

[ laughter ]

so when dave said that they were
gonna come through dallas,

I said, "heck yeah,
you can use the shop,"

you know, I mean, am I gonna
turn down 200 customers

possibly coming through
the merch shop?

Absolutely not.
On top of that,

I've got an extra car
over there in the shop

that I think I might be able
to get dave hall to buy.

Alright, well let's get
everybody in here

and there's a taco
stand over there.

And I know you like
your chilies,

but while everybody's pulling
in, I got something

I need to show you.
-Alright.

Richard tells me
he's got something

he wants to show me
that he wants to sell me.

He's always got something
he's got to sell.

So, oh, by the way,
your donuts sucked,

I saw you coming in.
-Yeah, yeah.

-Whoo!
-Coming up on "fast n' loud"...

Timing job, tanner.

Narrator: ...The monkeys may be
running out of time.

-Come on, baby.
-And...

-You're scared of heights?
-Yeah. Yeah.

Narrator:
Russell's fear of heights
pushes him over the edge.

Richard:
The bandit run is a run that's
put on by a friend of mine,

david hall.
Basically what it is,

is a whole bunch of "smokey
and the bandit" enthusiasts

driving around this great nation
of ours in trans am heaven.

I know you like
your chilies,

but while everybody's
pulling in,

I got something
I need to show you.

-Alright.
-He did start with trans ams,

but he's been advancing his shop
and it's growing every day,

so I know he's also
into camaros,

and I've got the perfect one.

-Alright, what have you got?
-I know you do trans ams,

but I also know you do some
camaros and some blazers

and what have you.
This documented two owner,

drug it out of
a cement floor barn.

First time it's seen daylight
since 1979.

So it's a '69 rally sport.

He was going to make a race car
out of it, he never did.

It's never been apart,
never been painted.

I like the four-speeds,
and I like '69s.

The rs is a good car.
So you haven't cleaned it?

I drug it
out of the barn,

put it on a trailer,
brought it here.

For guys like me and dave,
originality speaks volumes,

so cleaning it all up and trying
to make it look better

than it really is,
sometimes can be a detriment.

So when I get
a good barn find car,

I'm going to leave it
just like it is

until either I build it
or somebody buys it to build.

For a minnesota car,
it's not real bad rusty,

the floors are good,
everything's good,

just gonna need the normal
tear it apart, clean it,

and put it back together.
-It looks pretty clean,

other than obviously
being extremely dirty.

Yeah it looks
really clean, dave.

It looks to be
a brown '69 camaro that,

first of all, they didn't make
a lot of brown camaros.

It's gonna need
a complete restoration,

but looks like a good car
to start with.

Well, it's not a trans am,
but I do like the camaros.

I think it's worth every bit
of 20 grand, isn't it?

It's not going to drive
out of here, got to drag it out.

I'm thinking like 9, 10?
-No, man, no, no way.

I put this on here
with gas monkey on it,

and the name, and the story
of sitting in a barn since 1979.

How about 15?
-Well, we're getting closer.

-Wrong way.
-Maybe $12,500?

Nah. Just give me
your best number.

I mean 15's
the number all day long.

Alright, well, since it's brown,
how about we take 500 off?

It's lay around brown?
$14,500, done.

-Yeah. Alright. No worries.
-Alright, cool.

Settle at $14,500,
that's good for gas monkey,

the car's going to a good home,
it's gonna get built,

which is what this car deserves,

and we've got a hundred
and something

trans ams out there, I got
to go say hi to some people.

That doesn't come
with any loading help,

you're going to have
to do that yourself.

-Loading help?
-Yeah,

let's go do some paperwork.
-Tony can do it.

Tony ain't done
a damn thing ever.

-are you ready to fire it up?
-We're ready to fire.

-Okay.
-Give you a little go-go juice.

Mike: Just as we're coming
down to the wire,

richard drops a b*mb on us.
The guys he bought the galaxie

from are coming down
to see the galaxie.

It turns out, they wanted
first dibs on buying it.

Hey, do we get a chance
to buy it back?

What are you going
to do with it?

Oh. Oh, well, yeah,
but it'll probably be more like

about 50 or 60 grand then.
-Go figure.

Mike:
They know the cars history,
so we got to get it right.

-Something's out of time.
-Try it again.

The wires could be
in the wrong order.

-That could be.
-Yeah, one's right here

right now, but I think
it should be right there.

Yeah, we're one off
all the way around.

-Okay, here.
-Try and start it up.

This thing ran like a top
when we brought it in here.

-Did it?
-Yeah.

Tops don't really run either,
they just spin.

-So what analogy would you make?
-Runs like richard's exes.

-Ready, ready?
-Yeah.

-Come on, baby!
-Apparently that wasn't it.

You know it ran and drove
when I brought it in.

Just needs a tickle
in the right spot.

Mm-hmm. It smells
like a lot of gasoline.

-Yeah, mike flooded it.
-Mike spilled it.

Just stare at it
for a minute, it'll work.

Richard: Normally I don't
hover over the guys

when they're trying
to get things done,

but ben and dino
are coming by tomorrow,

and so I'm going to do
a little helicopter parenting.

I like it, paint's looking good,
be way cooler if it ran.

Choke it.

Alright.

Yeah, did somebody put that
distributor in backwards?

-No, we never took it out.
-I took it out.

I don't know which car
he's talking about but yes.

Jason: Okay, I might've put
the distributor back in wrong,

it's a rookie mistake,
but one with a super easy fix.

I just pull the distributor,

rotate the bottom gear
180 degrees, put it back in,

and we should be good.
-We're ready to start the car.

It's not going to run
with the cap off.

Well, I know.
You have any faith in me?

-I got faith.
-Okay.

Tony and I have a lot of faith.

-Keenan, it's all you, brother.
-Come on. Hey!

Okay, even a broken clock
is right twice a day.

Hey, do we get
anything for that?

Yeah, you get
to finish the job.

-Yeah.
-It does sound good. 100%.

You guys got this?
Button it up?

Okay, I'm going to go
finish my other project.

-Yeah.
-You know what this means?

Me, tony, and chad
get to go along

with richard and russell to sky
dive with the golden knights.

Now that we have
the galaxie motor running,

we're counting down the last
few details before lift off.

Mike painted the bumpers
to match the body.

Losing the chrome gives
the car a smooth, clean look.

Look, we just put this
on there and we're done.

The chrome tips
will dress up the exhaust.

Done and done.

It's a small
but important detail.

Done and done.

Jason:
We're resurrecting the original
stripes on the rocker

with a modern,
durable vinyl wrap.

-So these just go back in here?
-Yep.

And there's kind of
like no error, right,

it's got to go
where it's got to go?

As long as the clips
are lined up.

And then this
just sits on top?

Yeah, it's just which
way does it go?

Not that way, look at
the angle of the trunk.

There you go, angle of the trim,
angle of the trunk.

Love it. I think it's money.
If we had some nuts.

You don't have the nuts
to finish the job?

Alright. That's the last one.
-Awesome.

Jason:
And lastly, russell are mike
are buttoning up the tail plate,

then our star will be
about ready to shine.

It's gonna totally
finish it off.

-Yeah, looks pretty good.
-k*lled it.

Let's get out of here.

Let's go jump out of
a perfectly good airplane.

Ugh.

richard: It's a good morning
for jumping.

-God, I'm going to puke.
-We're out here in greenville,

texas, where the golden knights
have procured a sky

diving facility for us to go up
with the world famous

golden knights.
-What's going on, fellas?

-Hey. Richard, what's happening?
-What's happening?

Alright, guys. My name is
major general frank muth,

commanding general, united
states recruiting command.

Major marissa
chierichella,

executive officer
for the golden knights.

Frank: The golden knights
are the united states army's

parachute team.
They compete around the world,

but they also do this
as an outreach

where they take people up
and do a tandem jump.

Marisa, keep an eye on this one,
he's afraid of heights.

Oh, man, you're scared?

-Yeah.
-Of heights.

-Of heights?
-Yeah.

It's only 13,000 feet,
you'll be totally fine.

Ugh. Why did you
talk me into this?

Oh, look there's cloud,
we're above the clouds.

Alright, here we go.

Ah!

whoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo!

holy cow!
Oh, my god, it's beautiful.

-Whoo! Yeah!
-Whoo! Yeah, baby!

Ooh, that was super
freaking cool, man.

-Let's do it again!
-Wow. I'm a little light headed.

Holy cow.
I got a little queasy.

My god! Oh, my god,
that was unbelievable.

And you pay people
to do this all day?

Absolutely.
When you got the world class

golden knights
being able to take you out

of a perfectly good aircraft,
what better day can there be?

Mike: I know we're next,
but for right now,

I'm so glad our check is safe.

-Whoo!
-Coming up on "fast n' loud"...

Wait, that's it right there?

Narrator:
The galaxie's former owners
get star struck.

Oh, my god.

And richard sends
the price sky high.

Richard: I could take it
to any auction house...

We're jumping
out of this plane.

Let's do it,
let's jump.

Mike: Hard work pays off,
let's sky dive, fellas.

tony: Whoo! Good lord.
Oh, that was awesome.

Richard:
How did you go with your hat
and your glasses?

-I like that.
-Do you wish you could do it?

Mike: Oh, that was awesome.
I want to go back up.

-We made it.
-I want to go again.

Richard: Let's get you out
of that stupid jumpsuit.

Mike: I like the suit,
it's like my paint suit.

mike: Here it is,
our 1968 ford galaxie xl.

What it looks like today
is a far cry

from when richard brought
it back from minnesota.

Richard: Oh, yeah!

Frankly, it wasn't
looking that bad

until we started
to poke at it.

Oh, man. Turns out
it was a rust bucket.

We deconstructed the car
so the monkeys

could repair the rust holes,
powder coat the chassis,

and clean decades of crud
off the underbelly.

Coal miner-esque.

Mike: I made richard happy
by coming up with a color

that honored
the original factory paint,

but with a little extra snap.

What didn't make him happy were
the imperfections that he saw

because he didn't
give us enough time.

Take it back apart, whatever
you got to do, and fix it.

Mike: But after the second trip
through the paint shop,

it sparkles like,
you guessed it,

a diamond in a goat's a*s.

Richard:
Under the hood, we revamped
the original 428 power train

so it looks better
than showroom ready.

Jason:
To give it the right stance,
we dropped the galaxie

onto a pure muscle suspension
kit from pmt motorsports.

It'll get up and go rolling
on a new set of budnik wheels

and fresh rubber.

And getting this beast to stop
is up to wilwood brakes.

Mike:
Stripping the old vinyl top
and the lower trim and color

matching the bumpers
bring this galaxie up to date

with a clean,
more modern look.

Plus, all the glass is tight
and dry with weather

stripping from steel
rubber products.

We lucked out with the interior.
It only needed a little repair,

and after a deep cleaning,
it looks as good as new.

There you have it, us monkeys
made richard's deadline,

now it's up to him
to make that first

right of refusal pay off
with the original owners.

this is one of those
rolls "kinardley,"

rolls down one hill,
"kinardley" get up the next.

Yep.

-Russell, richard.
-How we doing, boys?

-Dino and ben, right?
-Long time no see.

-What's up, man?
-Good to see you.

The two guys, ben and dino,

that we bought the galaxie xl
from come strolling in.

-Is it done?
-It is actually done.

-What's the --
-really?

Ben: I thought maybe
we'd find another one,

but turns out we didn't.
We just wanna see the thing.

Alright, cool,
go drag it out, man.

Alright.

Boom!

-Wait, that's it right there?
-Yeah.

Oh, my god.

Dino: As soon as I saw it,
it was wow factor,

I could not believe it was
the same car we sold them.

-Oh, I like this, this is nice.
-Well done, gentlemen.

Richard: But you haven't
even seen the thing.

This is not
what I thought.

Well, we ended up having to take
the whole car off the frame,

it just wasn't going to work
for what we wanted.

So every nut, every bolt,
everything's been touched.

Russell: All the rust in
the rear quarters

was taken care of
and repaired.

It's unbelievable,
it's done to the nines,

I mean, the color
matched the bumpers,

custom wheels, wilwood brakes.
-How original is the motor,

is it the same transmission,
everything?

Richard:
Yeah, we pulled everything,
went all through it,

made sure that whatever
wasn't working the way it needed

to be that it is now.

-Yeah.
-We opened the hood on the car

and it's like opening
a jewelry box,

I mean, it's better
than the factory put it out,

it's just perfect.
This is incredible.

Richard:
Interior is all stock,
we just fixed the one rip.

If it's not broke,
don't fix it.

I didn't know they were
gonna do all this, dino.

-No, this is amazing.
-You guys wanna go for a ride?

-Yeah. Yeah, we have to.
-Get out of the way.

You don't have insurance
in this state.

-Shotgun.
-Really?

You're gonna make the potential
customer ride in the back?

-Well, did you see cash yet?
-No, I haven't seen any cash.

Richard:
It's not a road racer, you know,
it's still got the 428

and the four-barrel,
but this is built to be

a comfortable car
to cruise around in.

-Yeah.
-That's why we love galaxies.

Dino: I've been a galaxie fan,
I've owned them for 25 years,

and the thing I like the most
about them, they're roomy

but they just ride nicer
than any other car.

I'm real happy
with the car,

I mean, it's probably the best
galaxie out there right now.

So there we go.
-Wow.

Ben: Alright,
very impressive fellas.

Richard: It is,
it's an impressive car.

Yeah, this is cool, you guys
did a great job on this thing.

I figure if I put this
on the old interwebs,

I might be able to get
a bunch of money.

I've thrown the bait,
on the hook,

and I've thrown the hook
and the bait into the water.

Now all I got to do
is reel them in.

So let's get down
to brass tacks.

-What's the number?
-I think the car's worth 40.

I mean...

Well, I was hesitant
to let it go originally.

-Talked me out of that.
-Just think of it this way,

it's only $29,000
more than I gave you.

Dino.

It would be neat
to get it back.

What if we traded that
'67 ltd, that fastback

he saw at our house?

So you guys saw
the '67 390 rare ltd,

it's not a galaxie,
it's a galaxie ltd.

Russell:
Are you suggesting trade
that just for this?

-Yeah.
-No, no, no, no.

I mean,
this car's $40,000,

I could take it
to any auction house,

I could put it on the
old interwebs and it'd sell.

Yeah.

Dino: What if we
put some cash in, too?

-The car and cash?
-When we bought the xl,

these guys
also had a galaxie ltd

that now they wanna trade.

Maybe richard will go for it.
We'll see.

$15,000 cash and the '67.

You're putting 25 grand
value on that '67? No way.

-It's a nice car.
-Unh-unh.

Alright,
18 grand and the ltd.

-Yeah.
-No, I don't think so.

I think 20 grand's
the number.

Ben: Do it. Dino.
Do it.

-It's your money too, you good?
-Do it.

-Alright, we're gonna do it.
-k*ller, man.

-Right on.
-Right on. Right on.

You're now the proud owners
of your own galaxie.

$20,000 plus their car
for our car. Great deal.

Ben:
They spared no expense
on this car, it's awesome.

I'm gonna put the whole
family in there

and go get the ice cream
on Sunday.

We bought a car, fixed it up,
and sold it back

to the same person.

That is how good we are.

Boom, that's how you do it
at gas monkey.

Whoo!
