Narrator: right now, on a
jam-packed "fast n' loud"...
Hot-rod hunter
richard rawlings
And master mechanic
aaron kaufman are all abuzz...
Me and aaron got
bug-eyed about it.
...when they make big plans
for a '65 volkswagen beetle...
$5,500?
Are you insane?
...and try to transform it
into a lean, mean bug machine.
You lost me at super beetle.
I know, right.
Meanwhile, richard goes
crawling back
To an old friend...
Can I get a beer?
...hoping to snare
a '75 silverado
And then skitters off
to scottsdale
To poke through a treasure
trove of old sports cars.
Ow.
That's cactus.
With the beetle
bringing them down...
Might be a little tall.
...can the monkeys
bounce back...
The wheels
look like [bleep]
...or will richard bug out?
I think it sucks.

Richard: tell me, when's
your vacation again?
Aaron: it's gonna be two weeks.
How 'bout this.
We've never built a bug.
Yeah, no kidding.
We've built
a shorty volkswagen bus,
And I thought it was almost
a waste of a lot of great parts.
I'm jonesin' to build
a volkswagen.
You know, I drove a '73
super beetle when I was kid.
You lost me at super beetle.
I know, right?
'Cause they're
so goofy looking.
Yellow, so I painted
a batman symbol
Across the hood of it
from headlight to headlight.
Boy, that's interesting.
I would have loved
To have seen it.
Yeah.
We're always looking for
something to build in the shop,
And sometimes,
those things find us.
And our old friend, eliot,
That helped us
with the shorty volkswagen van
That we built gave me a call,
And he's real
into volkswagens.
I mean, he's got a ton of them.
He goes, "richard," he goes,
"I'm up to two buildings now and
I'm still running out of room.
I'm fixing to punt a few
of my projects,
And if you guys are interested,
come on down
And see what
I've got to sell."
It'd be nice
to break new ground,
But we definitely
don't have a lot of time,
And I think building
A proper beetle,
ain't nothing wrong with that.
When I say a proper beetle,
I mean absolutely hammered
and a lot of power.
That's what I mean
when I say proper bug.
God he's always
got cool stuff.
He's got some
nice stuff going.
All right.
Eliot: look who's here.
What's up, dude?
How you doing?
How we doing?
My name is eliot vancil.
I'm from midlothian, texas.
What is that?
That's a schwinn wagon.
Schwinn.
Aaron:
envisioned by david schwimmer
Yeah, you'd have
to go, "schwimm wagon!"
Eliot's not just your average
hop-on-the-internet collector,
So this guy spends his time,
Spends his money
to travel the world
And go and
hunt down vehicles.
Richard: this beaster looks
like it could be cool.
Yeah, we got some big plans
with this thing.
It's just a fiberglass kit car.
Yep.
But those are the ones that
you can get stupid with, right?
Yeah, they're not
too expensive.
We're gonna shorten
the windshield
And widen the rear fenders
And put a big
What's the deal with this one?
Man, I've had it for a while.
I just don't have time to mess
with it and no room, really,
But I'd sell you this one.
It's original paint, '65.
Really?
And if you look at it,
there's no rust.
I love the color on it.
Yeah, honestly, man,
I think that stuff
would just buff right out.
Man, I think this thing
would look sexy buffed.
I really like it.
Got to get it down some.
What year did you say this is?
'65.
'65?
Yeah.
So, just all bone stock?
Yeah, just bone stock.
Stock 40 horse,
original paint,
Good pans,
good heater channels.
Smells a little musty.
They all do.
Find one that don't.
Richard:
I need something like this.
It's probably what we need.
So it's real straight.
I just see one whiskey dent
on that corner over there.
Yeah, I think you just did
that, didn't you?
That'd be a beer dent.
With an affordable price tag
and tons of bolt-on parts,
Vw bugs have been some of
the most customized cars
In the world
Ever since they first
came out in germany in 1938.
Some of the craziest builds I've
ever seen started out as vws.
It just goes to show you
that even something
Totally uncool
can still be super-cool.
This would be a good project
for you guys.
It's clean,
won't have to do much to it.
You can get it in,
get it out.
So, we checked out the car.
I could tell aaron
Was into it from
the originality of the paint
And stuff like that and the fact
that it's not rusty,
So now all I got to do
is get it bought.
Richard: well, what do you want
for this thing, man?
I'll take 8,000 bucks
for it.
Come on, you said you were
cleaning out the shop.
You needed the room.
I was thinking more like
I can't do that.
Richard, I know
you're a wheeler dealer,
But I've been doing
this a while.
You're not getting it
for 4,500 bucks.
You know what's crazy?
I have no idea
If he's low or you're high.
I don't know where
to put this one.
I want to think this is
a $500 car,
But I'm sure that's wrong.
A $500 car.
These things are getting hard
to find,
Original paint,
original stickers,
Unmessed with.
You can ask aaron.
All right, how
'bout $5,500?
Still a little bit low.
Well, listen.
We could offset it a little bit.
Y'all build some
volkswagen parts, don't you?
We do.
We're gonna need volkswagen
parts if we build it, right?
Yeah, that's
what I'm saying.
If we can get closer
to his price,
Maybe he can hook us up
with a bunch of parts we need.
I'll do this.
A 4-inch narrowed beam,
get it on the ground.
We'll build you
some drop plates
In the back
to get it sitting right.
If you got questions,
got issues,
We'll help you out
with the motors
And stuff like that,
and 6 grand.
I think we can get it done.
Does that work?
I have no idea
what these are worth.
All right, man.
We'll do it.
You treated us
right on the little van,
So let's see what we can
do with this.
Hashtag -- sold.
Pretty good negotiating, man.
Man, I needed it to work out.
It's the car I wanted to build,
So I just needed y'all
to agree on something.
Awesome.
You're going bugging, aaron.
Excellent.
Thanks, guys.
Richard:
now we got to load it.
We didn't steal the car,
But, you know,
he didn't give it away either,
So it was a fair deal
all the way around.
As far as what the monkeys
are gonna think
When we get back
with a volkswagen bug
And that's what
we're gonna build...
I don't really care.
Do you?
No. It's gonna happen.
Yeah.
[ Horn honks ]
Volkswagen bug time!
Oh, yeah.
Fahrvergnugen.
How many monkeys
can you put in a bug?
Let's find out.
Let us see.
Keep going.
We got to see how many monkeys
we can put in there.
Hey, quit messing around.
I'm trying to see how many
people we can stuff in a bug.
More monkeys.
Ricardo: hey, we still got
you and aaron.
I'm good out here.
I appreciate the concern.
I'll do it.
Ow!
Oh [bleep] [bleep]
[bleep] [bleep]
Yeah!
Ricardo: oh, man.
I got the business
end of this deal.
Ow!
That's not my leg.
Richard:
that's eau de ricardo.
At least you smell good.
Ricardo: enough of this.
That was only seven.
Somebody needs to look up
the world record.
Isn't it, like,
Why a volkswagen?
Aaron:
man, you know what?
I really wanted to build
a proper volkswagen.
I don't need to take it
to a different level.
I don't need
to make a spaceship.
I want to build a hammered,
sweet interior beetle.
I love the stock color,
And I think it'll look great
buffed and cleaned up.
Ricardo: so, how low do
you want to go with it?
Darn near on the ground.
Two-inch ride height?
Somewhere between there
and three and change.
So, me and tony painting
it or what?
Absolutely not.
I think the paint's gonna buff
out great, and I love the color.
You could say me and aaron
got bug-eyed about it.
Haha!
[ Drum roll ]
I really like this little '65,
And I want to do it up right,
so here's the plan.
We're gonna stick it
to the ground
With a suspension package
from airkooled kustom vw
Then replace
the stock wheels and tires
With two-piece 17s
front and back.
It wouldn't take much to get
the vw engine running,
But with 40 horsepower
it puts out,
It just won't make it for us,
so we'll turn to eliot again
For a motor making
about five times that.
And coy gets a break
because I'll bring in a guy
To fix the whiskey dents
and buff out the original paint.
I'm setting the deadline
at just two weeks
Because aaron booked himself
a little time off,
So for once, I can bank on him
getting this build done in time.
We got 6 grand in it.
What do you think, another 15?
I have no idea
how to price this right now.
Yeah, you didn't know
how to price it
When we were buying
it, either.
Y'all get after it.
I got to go see phipps
And buy something else
just to keep y'all busy.
I actually really
like volkswagens. I got one.
Ricardo: I love it.
Yeah.
I am excited about it.
Yeah, me, too.
Richard: what's been up, man?
Dewaine: not much.
Look at this place.
Eh.
So, you let the ding-dongs
move up front?
Yeah, they needed the space
and I wasn't using it.
So, phipps gave tony a call
and said they got a truck
That he kind of did
some work on for somebody
And traded for the bill
And, you know,
he needed to get some cash up
And just wanted
to get rid of it,
And when he said it was
a shortbed 4x4,
I'm like, "I'm in.
That's worth a little trek
over to phipps'."
Plus, I know he's got cold beer.
So, this is what you
called me about?
Yeah.
What is this,
like a '75, huh?
Yep.
It's cool, shortbed.
Pretty decent 4x4.
I liked it when I made
the deal with the guy.
What was the deal?
Well, I did a lot of work
on his other truck for it.
So he traded his bill
for this truck?
Yeah.
And this needs work.
Yes, sir.
Ugh!
Pretty straight body, though,
and it's not rusty.
Yeah, they took care of it.
I like the winch.
I'd like to keep the winch.
I don't know.
I like the way it's '80sed-out,
got these fender flares.
[ Clicking ]
Battery's dead.
There's no headliner.
Seat's ripped.
Radio's obviously broken.
Or it is now.
It's a little oxidized.
Yeah, a little
spit shine.
Heck yeah.
Do that on the other side,
we're good to go.
Just added value to this thing.
It's rad.
I mean, it's not rusty.
It's not beat up.
Got a dent in the tailgate,
a little oxidized paint,
But it's all, you know,
'80s fall guy type style.
You know, it's straight-up cool.
Battery's dead.
It looks like
it'll run and drive,
And I think
it's a pretty easy flip
If I can get it
at the right price.
What do you want or it?
Oh, I'd take $6,000.
I asked phipps what he wants
For it and it's, "six."
I'm, like, well, I mean,
I don't know
If this guy got the interweb
since I've been gone,
But he's obviously
done his homework.
Dude, I'm not paying
Somebody might.
No, somebody won't,
And I'm standing here,
and you called me.
Come on, man.
You really think it's $6,000?
I'm hoping to get
Knowing richard, I'll probably
get maybe $4,000 or less.
Dude, I can't pay that
if you traded labor for it.
I was thinking more like
non-running,
Shortbed, junk-box truck.
How 'bout 2 grand?
I was really
wanting $4,000.
Well, I'm really wanting
to pay $2,000.
I need $4,000.
I got $3,000 worth of labor
on the other truck.
All right, so how 'bout
Uh...
That's the middle.
That is the middle.
I should have
started higher then, huh?
Yeah.
How 'bout $3,250?
Man, I love phipps, but he
can't negotiate for [bleep],
Which is probably why I like him
so much, come to think of it.
It's 3 grand.
That's what I got right here.
I'd rather have $4,000.
You want the money or you
don't want the money?
Well, you got it out
of your pocket and I seen it.
Yeah, I do want it.
All right.
Kick-a*s, brother.
I'll call tony and tell --
come on. We got a deal?
All right, cool.
Come on.
Hey, thanks.
We'll have tony come get it
Since he sent me down here
to do the dirty work, anyways.
Cool.
I got 3 grand for the truck.
I'm happy.
It'll work out.
They'll do something with it
and I won't have to.
It's good.
It's straight-up cool.
Obviously, as you're listening
to me tell you that,
Aaron's probably
saying how not cool it is,
But don't worry about that.
I say it's cool.
Could I get a beer, phipps?!
I'll wait here till I get one.
I don't care.
About time, man.
Yeah.
Good luck with that.
[ Laughter ]
Narrator: coming up,
on "fast n' loud"...
This might be a problem.
The silverado has
a small steering problem.
[ Grunting ]
And the beetle gets
a big upgrade.
That doesn't sound like
any bug I've ever heard.
Adam:
I've never built a beetle.
I've always been
curious about it.
I've always wanted to,
But I was afraid to be
a beetle guy, beetle person.
So, I mean, the plus side
is the wheels,
Big brakes, very big motor,
So much of the factory
appearance,
So everything on the outside
will kind of stay this way.
We're just gonna give
a brand-new attitude.
You want to do an ecoboost
in this one?
If there was enough time.
I think we'll stick
with the air-cooled vw.
So, I'll get the
pdr guy over here.
Pdr -- paintless dent repair.
It's the old repair techniques
That have never
really gone away.
I have counted 22 dings,
dents, creases.
You count better
than I did.
Only now instead of wasting time
With a car
going to someone else's shop,
The technician comes to me.
I like having the
pdr guy massage the dents out
Because it's faster than coy
spending a week
With it in the paint shop.
Richard will like it because
it's cheaper than new paint,
And as a bonus, not spending the
cash will result in more profit.
That's it.
My side.
Right there.
It's all you.
You should have
a pretty decent gap over there.
Yeah, it's good.
Arms will reach it, though.
Dude, this thing
did clean up.
What are y'all gonna do now,
tear it apart?
Yeah, I'm just gonna shake the
motor out of the bottom of it.
Well let's see it, homeboy.
Shake it out.
Or is it shake it off?
I don't know.
Ready?
I don't think
it's gonna come out.
Got four bolts holding it.
Yeah, you should probably
get some tools.
That's what I was doing.
You're working with a tool.
Trust me. Two of them.
I work for a tool.
Trust me.
Doesn't this thing
look cute on the lift?
It looks tiny.
Might as well strip
the bumpers, wheels,
All that and get
all that crap out of the way.
Charles: in terms of how
good of condition
The car's in, it's impeccable.
For a 1965 model car
To only have just
a little bit of surface
Rust and not be beat up
is kind of an anomaly, actually.
They don't happen very often.
Okay, go for it.
Yep, you got it.
Speedo cable. Hold on.
We're gonna put
a new suspension,
New engine, new interior,
But keep that
old look of the car.
Easy-peasy, huh?
You'll be able to hop
in it, man, and haul a*s.
Tft knows his vws, man.
Tony taylor tool time.
Go for it.
Jason: now we're just taking
the rear suspension,
Transmission, front suspension,
Getting everything
out of the way
So we can add
all the new fun stuff.
You're done.
Good enough.
Between you and charles,
the knowledge of volkswagens...
Man, I got dirty.
What do you do now?
Do you get to go home
when you get dirty?
Jason: there's one
other way to do it.
The other way.
So, maynard dropped
This silverado
off in the driveway.
The problem with this thing
is it's not starting,
It's too heavy for the forklift,
and last time I checked,
Steering wheels
aren't supposed to do this.
Might be a problem.
I think we're gonna need
a few more bodies for this one.
Aaron:
this is the steering wheel?
Good god.
Shut that door, would you?
He's gonna try and run
that while equipped.
So, ricardo bought
this '75 silverado
From phipps the other day.
I got to say, he done good.
Not a lot of rust and just
the right amount of dents.
Hey, just easy does it.
Easy does it.
Don't go faster
than he can turn.
God dang!
He's gonna be a tired son
of a g*n.
[ Grunting ]
It is a slow process
with this thing.
Oh, my god!
Oh, my god!
Shake 'em out.
Can I rip
this blinker handle off?
I don't care.
All right, go.
Easy.
This sucks!
Maybe leave this thing
just straight in the garage.
Are y'all hungry?
I am ridiculously hungry.
Man, I really wish
Richard would have checked out
the steering wheel on this truck
Before we pulled it
in the driveway.
So, what's the grand
master flash plan with this?
Well, 'cause it's just,
you know,
We're not doing anything
too great with it
And it's kind of almost okay
the way it is,
I figured we'd buff it.
We've got really one
badly damaged piece of trim.
The tailgate.
We're gonna pull the chrome off
of it and leave it,
Buffing, leave it like it is,
pull all the little emblems off,
You know, the junk
that's all over it,
Pull the winch off the front,
pull the tube grille,
So it'll have a stock grille,
stock bumper up front,
No winch, clean up the engine
bay a little bit.
It's gonna get a new column,
new headliner, new seat, carpet,
And then clean to paint,
we're gonna wash the tires
And wheels and then we're gonna
re-polish the wheels,
And, you know,
reseal the differentials,
The leak and stuff on it
and that'll be about it.
Works for me.
I mean, it should bring,
What, 12, 13 grand in?
It's an interesting truck.
I think you'll find
a good buyer for it.
All right, cool.
Get after it.
All right, boys.
You heard the man.
[ Horn honking ]
Hey, did you go
on an expedition or what?
I think it's far from puking.
Yeah.
What's up, guys?
What's up, fellas?
Look at that.
Indoor delivery service.
Thanks, man.
Eliot's here today
With the big parts
delivery for the bug.
I mean, well, not really.
Just one part, the motor.
Let's see the goods.
Boom!
Dude, that's a lot of power
For a little bug.
That's pretty rad.
Yeah, this is
a little rowdy 22/76,
Making about 200 horses.
So, what's
their stock motor size?
That would have been actually
a 40-horse
That you pulled
out of that one.
Yeah!
So, it's a little bit
of an upgrade.
Little bit of an upgrade.
Looks heavy. Guys.
Got it, muscles?
Yeah, go ahead.
I'll watch.
Yeah, let's put a battery
on it and let's get it fired up.
That much power in this
little bitty thing
And it's gonna stay air-cooled?
That's wicked.
A big boost in power
like this doesn't come cheap,
And that's probably why aaron's
packing for his vacation
Instead of standing here
when I have to cut the check.
This one's $5,500.
Leave it to aaron kaufman
to order a...
[ Engine starts ]
[ Revving ]
Dude, that doesn't sound like
any bug I've ever heard.
Get you some of that.
All right, guys.
Hey, thank you all, man.
I'm gonna let y'all
get to work with these guys.
Y'all chunk this thing in there.
Let's get this bug done.
Let's do it.
$5,500?
Are you insane?
It's a volkswagen,
man.
Narrator:
coming up on "fast n' loud"...
What have I done?
Narrator:
...aaron has a few regrets.
That's a horrible idea
is what it was.
Whoa!
Narrator: and richard gets
a little prick.
Ow.
That's cactus.
Ricardo: you been waiting
on this?
Stuff from airkooled.
Yeah.
I got one more box.
Ahh!
Aaron:
we got the front suspension
In for the bug,
and it looks cool.
Everything is pre-built.
We just need to get
it hung on the car.
If I get it high enough?
One airkooled front
end installed.
We're good to go.
It's nice to pick up a rear-end
section that's that light.
Installing the new rancho
high-performance transaxle
Is just about as easy.
Compare to all the other cars
and trucks we do,
This transaxle weighs
nothing at all.
I think when we get done
with this,
This bug is really
gonna be badass.
It'll be super-quick
with five times the power
From the new motor.
Yeah, you want
to get that lift?
I got you.
You want to let it set
on that one?
You can just leave it
on that one.
It's fine.
It's a pretty big motor
for a volkswagen
That only weighs less
than 2,000 pounds,
So, it's gonna motivate
pretty good.
[Bleep] -
all right, it's good.
Oh, give me one second.
Stop.
We're stabbing the motor
And we're running
into a couple of fitment issues.
All right, go ahead.
We kind of anticipated it
Because of the width
of the motor.
So we pulled
the valve covers off,
Ended up having just enough room
to get it squeezed in there.
How are you
on the other side?
You're good.
You're clear on the back.
Go down. Okay, hold on.
Yeah, we're on it now.
It fit.
I mean, once we got it hung
on the bottom
Two bolts,
I just shoved it on there.
Jason started the hardware
on there.
Boom.
Whew!
The dishes are done, dude.
Nothing easier
than putting a motor
In a bug,
I can tell you that.
Richard: you know I never
turn down a chance
To go to sunny scottsdale,
But this dry desert
makes havoc on my hair.
You having a bad hair day?
Today, we're just
Outside of scottsdale
in desert hills, arizona.
So what's the deal
with this place, man.
You found this one.
Lady's husband has been
collecting these
Since the late '60s,
early '70s.
She's got about 15 cars.
She's got some austin healys,
some triumphs,
An old racecar alvis,
So we came out here
to check it out.
It looks like it's chaos.
It does look like chaos.
Holy cow.
I love the british
and european sports cars.
I always have.
I've been buying the big
healys for over 30 years.
You know, I'm not
as big into
The british sports cars
as dennis,
But I'm anywhere
we can make money,
And dennis told me to
jump the plane and go with him.
I'm here with a pocket
full of cash.
Let's make it happen.
Yeah, most of these cars
haven't moved since the '70s.
[ Sighs ]
The good thing about arizona,
they shouldn't be rusty.
This is true.
That's pretty rad.
Good morning.
Good morning.
Hi.
Dennis collins.
Richard rawlings. How are you?
I'm good.
How are you?
Nice to meet you.
My name's cindy wood,
And I'm from
desert hills, arizona.
My husband was
a rocket scientist,
And he just loved cars,
And as you can see,
then let them sit in the sun.
Unfortunately, my husband passed
And I'm trying
to clean up the property.
So this is the tr3?
Yeah.
The best thing about
the car is the hubcaps.
Dennis: yeah,
they're cool.
Whoa!
Golly.
You scared the crap out of me.
Holy cow.
Look at that.
That might be the worst
one I've ever seen.
I've seen some rat nests
before, but this thing,
You couldn't put more nest
in the rat's nest.
It was full of nest.
All right, cool.
What else we got?
Okay.
There's a bugeye right here.
These are cool.
Bugeye sprites,
some people call them frogeyes.
Pretty neat.
And that's
the volkswagen there.
Dennis: p1800 s.
License plate's '97,
So we might be able
to get this one to run.
Richard: this is a big healy
here, isn't it, dennis?
Yeah, it's a late one.
That one's a beauty, too.
This car looks
pretty good.
Afraid something's gonna
jump out.
Yeah, I know.
I'm waiting on a snake.
What's that out there,
another healy?
So, this one's
a lot earlier.
Whoa.
[ Laughs ]
That is so crazy.
Hang on.
Wha!
What are you looking
for dennis?
What I'm
really interested
In is how many carburetors
are over there.
Is there two or three?
Ow!
That's cactus.
Yeah, that's cactus.
I told you.
Ouch.
I didn't think about it.
It looked like
just general rat stuff.
I didn't realize it was
full of cacti.
Holy cow.
Ah, man.
Thumb still hurts.
That's my beer-drinking,
can-holding thumb, too.
Yeah, you stuck it
right in there.
How's your hand
feel, r?
It stings a little.
There's the alvis.
That's my favorite car.
Wow.
And the engine is really cool
if you open the engine up.
Look at that.
It's a judson
supercharger.
Richard: is it?
That is cool.
Look at this, too.
It's an external oil setup.
See, these cars
didn't have that.
This must have been
a race car.
This is the only car
that makes me sad
That I'm selling
'Cause I know
he loved this one so much.
I can tell.
You can tell.
Dennis:
you know what's crazy
Is there's no rat stuff
under this one at all.
The rats have
respected it.
Yeah, they've
respected this car.
We have to get this
one running, r.
We got to get them
bought first.
What's great about
these cars here,
They look rough,
but they're not rusted.
These are all good cars
to restore.
Yeah, it's like when you
put cars out in the desert,
They don't rust away,
They kind of just
fade into the ground.
They dust away.
They just become dust.
The alvis is pretty cool.
The alvis is great.
It is neat.
There's six cars here
That we're definitely
interested in buying.
Three healys, the volvo,
there's the alvis,
And then there's the tr3,
so, those are the ones we want.
Richard: how 'bout 25 grand
for the six cars?
No.
That alvis is
worth that much at least.
And then you're
getting five more cars.
How 'bout 45?
Hundred?
$45,000.
Got to ask.
Got to ask.
It's a good thing she had
a sense of humor.
Yeah, I thought she was
gonna hit me with that cane.
Well, I don't know.
How 'bout if we go $30,000 cash
for the cars, done deal?
Oh, boy.
I need to get rid of them
and I need the cash,
So, yeah, let's do it.
All right, done deal.
We got the whole package
bought for 30 grand.
That's a good deal
Except for we got to drag them
out of here and get them home.
And I'm not doing
any of that.
Me, either.
I'll coordinate it, though.
And here's your bonus.
Richard: the triumph handbook
of maintenance.
Dennis, I'm gonna go see
if I can get that running.
[ Both laugh ]
Dennis: good luck, it's
right there.
[ Horn honks ]
Aaron: when it comes to parts
on this silverado,
They're kind of like us.
Some just need
a little vacation to rehab,
Others have done their job
and need to be retired.
One of the things
we noticed early on
When we got the truck in was
the trim didn't line up at all,
Which doesn't matter other than
the fact that it's an indicator
That the cab bushings
are wore out.
Maybe nothing will fall on us.
As you can see,
that's a pretty good example.
This one's actually
walking away,
And so the cab
would wiggle independent
From the chassis
and from the bed.
It's not fresh paint
or a new motor,
But getting quick,
little jobs
Like this one
done can improve the ride
And the appearance
of the truck enough
That richard can make
a few bucks by flipping it.
At least that's the plan.
By putting new cab
bushings in it,
The vehicle will feel
much more connected to the road,
Much more stable,
And the bonus is the trim
will line up.
Like always, more complicated
than it should be.
Simple doesn't always mean easy,
But with a few adjustments
of the sleeves
For the body mounts,
The fresh bushings are just
what the truck doctor ordered.
So these things
do have shims on them,
So we may have to adjust
this a couple times.
I left such a nasty mess
down there. What have I done?
Nasty, nasty, nasty.
You know,
I was thinking to myself.
I was like, "man, I'm just
gonna pop some cab bushings
In this thing,
Nice clean job,
be done in a minute."
Hell, no.
Laying around in all this crap.
It's a horrible idea
is what it was.
I'm just trying to get a couple
things lined up a little better
Before I set it back down.
I think I did an excellent job
of replacing the cab bushings.
With the trim lining up,
the silverado eyeballs
A bit better so richard
can get on to selling it.
And now, I can get
on to doing some laundry
So I can get myself
packed up for vacation.
Narrator:
coming up on "fast n' loud,"
The bug doesn't sit right
with aaron.
Might be a little tall.
I was told this was
Going to the
interior shop three days ago.
And the monkeys
are short on excuses.
The wheels look like
[bleep]
]] Narrator:
although he now owns
the largest porsche collection
In the world,
jerry seinfeld's first ride
Was a humble 1977 vw bug.
Mike: why does it have
to be any color?
Why can't it just be
the body color?
Jason: richard wants
this two-toned.
But, what's the color
of the interior?
It's something similar
to these grays in a mesh.
So we're looking
for an earth-tone gray.
Richard wants to go two-toned
on the color for vw wheels,
So while he's out
buying cars with dennis,
I'm gonna lock in a color
to match the interior,
An interior we don't have
in the car yet.
All right, thanks.
Yep.
Once we have
the wheels ready to go,
We can get the vw on the ground
and see how it sits.
Mike:
I'm not real sure about it,
but it's what he wanted, so.
He picks it, I stick it,
so that's what he got.
Look, it's like christmastime.
Ooh.
Yeah.
We got centers.
That's what you picked.
That's what richard wanted,
To match that interior.
Look good here.
Yeah, it doesn't look too bad.
No.
Aaron: the beetle's level
of completeness is oddly enough,
Very close to being complete.
We're short an upholstery,
Which is a drop kick
and a couple bolts away.
That's the rear
right there.
So, the beetle's rapidly
approaching being complete.
I'm really anxious to see
how this thing sits.
Oh, tell me about it.
We're about to put
the wheels and tires on.
I'm really curious
to see how it sits.
Initially, the plan
for this car
Was to build just
a proper beetle, straight up,
And so far, I'm really,
really happy
With the way everything's
come together
From tail pipes to headlights.
I think that we have
a proper beetle.
It's got all the right parts,
everything's super-nice.
I think it's gonna be
a great driver.
I like that subtle
color difference.
It's supposed to match
whatever's in the interior.
Oh, really?
It's supposed to be one of
the colors of the interior.
Got ya.
Contact.
Back might be a little high.
Might be a little tall.
Not as low as I want it.
Obviously, these are adjustments
that can be made.
It sits a little high,
but, you know what?
Today's not the day
to adjust all that.
We have upholstery to go in,
glass has to go in.
There's still a lot of things
that have to be done,
So we're not gonna waste
any time with that,
But we will ultimately be
quite a bit lower.
It needs to come down
a couple more,
I mean, at least three
in the back
And at least another one
in the front,
But, like I said, it's not
a pavement-scraper by any means,
But we definitely need it
to have the right look
And the right
performance level.
But it's nice to see the wheels
and tires on for the first time
And get a feel
for the direction of the car.
I personally like them
much more hammered.
It's gonna change.
Right.
'Cause it'd be premature
To just start
adjusting stuff.
I wouldn't get carried
away right now.
You can throw another 500 pounds
in it, 400 pounds in it
And then a driver in it.
I think another inch
In the front
would be really, really nice.
And then obviously get
the rear to match it.
Awesome.
Well, hey, first step.
At least we know
what it looks like.
Rock and roll.
Now I'm excited to see
The bumpers
And everything
else on it now.
The hoff would love it.
You guys get to it.
I got to pack
for a vacation.
See y'all later.
Mike: hey, aaron already left.
Let's go.
[ Engine starts ]
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
What are y'all doing?
We're gonna go test-drive
this truck on a beautiful day.
Sounds like a good idea.
Scoot over.
Oh, man.
I got to ride b*tch?
Can't go on a test-drive
without me.
Can't go on a test-drive
with three guys in a truck.
You got that shaft
right here in the middle.
Yeah, why'd I get stuck
with that?
You got the shaft.
Hold on to
your butts, boys!
Hit it! Yeah!
Yeah! Hell, yeah!
Go!
[ Laughter ] whoo!
Do I finally get to drive?
Oh, yeah.
Or let me have it.
Get you some of that.
Yeah.
Heck, yeah.
Hell, yeah.
Man, good time, dude.
All right, good enough.
Sweet.
Y'all have tony
clean it up.
Tell him to get it
on the 'net for sale.
I'll do it.
Let's go eat some lunch.
Somebody's gonna give their
right nut for this one.
You can actually leave
that in there
So we can test
the clutch and everything.
I think he'll be able
to take it today.
Okay, so, I was told
This was going to the
interior shop three days ago.
What's the deal?
Well, we changed the plan.
I wanted to finish the car,
With the exception
of the interior,
So when we get it back,
all we got to do is drive it.
The wheels look like [bleep]
that's not the color we picked.
No, no, no.
Hey, you told me
to match the interior.
Do you know what color
your interior is?
Richard:
the interior has a brown plaid
to it, so I want brown.
No, it has gray
and it has white.
These are
your two options.
Gray, really?
I mean, leave it to my guys
To pick a color
from the interior
That's not actually
an accent color.
I think it sucks.
You got to realize
That I need you
to do what I want,
Not what I actually
mean to say.
No, no. Trust me.
We've already talked about this.
Let me think here.
What does richard want?
Oh, okay.
[Bleep] uh,
we got to fix that.
I was thinking just
a dark brown, you know?
Definitely dark, 'cause
in that plaiting area,
There's some
dark brown in there.
Yeah, as soon as we put it
on there, I hated it.
It looks like [bleep]
Let's yank them off
and get them painted again.
We can get them back
on this afternoon, can't we?
Yeah.
Yank them.
All right.
All right, cool.
Get after it.
We're not really behind,
but it seems like we are.
That guy's never happy.
Never.
Right on.
I love it when
a plan comes together.
Narrator:
coming up on "fast n' loud"...
What's up, home slice?
...the silverado
falls short of expectations.
But can the beetle
give them a lift?
Ready for sale.
Give me a call.
Tony: now, that's
a car right there.
Aaron: it's an
apple fritter, right?
It's an
apple fritter, man.
Straight from europe.
What do you call it,
a fridolin?
This is a swiss model
vw fridolin.
Something like 10
of these exist now?
Probably in the vw family,
probably the rarest of the rare.
We had to go to prague
to get this thing.
And drove it 1,800 miles
Across germany,
put it on a boat.
You mean it wasn't
just sitting in south texas?
Got it over here.
It was not in south texas.
Man, it is cool.
It's like some kind
of small utility van.
It looks tremendous, man.
You want to take it
for a ride?
Yeah, I'd love to.
Let's go, man.
Hey, is there anything
to hold on to?
No seat belts?
Whatever?
Wow.
Whoo-hoo-hoo-hoo!
Man, this thing's
got all kinds of power.
This the same motor
we got in our car?
Same motor.
Oh, geez.
I can't wait to take
the bug out now.
Fun's over.
It's time to go back
to the prison we work at.
So, speaking of cool,
We got another car
we got to get finished up.
I like this finish.
You could always paint it.
You can paint it 100 times,
But it's only gonna look
like this once.
[ Horn honks ]
Richard: so, I'm coming back
from lunch on my ktm,
And tony's out there
trying to sell the silverado.
Now, tony's my guy
for managing the inventory,
But if you're gonna
close the deal,
You need the closer.
What's up?
What's up, home slice?
Man, just enjoying
the weather. This day!
It's a pretty day, man.
Richard rawlings.
Marc ringel.
Marc, how you doing?
My name is marc ringel.
I'm from new york, new york.
You the guy that called about
taking a look a this truck?
Yes, I am.
Cool, man.
Tony, did you sell it
to him yet?
I'm in the process
of selling it,
But I had to bring
in the closer, man.
Where've you been?
Well, the closer's here, man.
So, what do you think?
Marc: it's an awesome truck.
I've been looking
for a truck like this.
And it's just you don't come
around one of these every day.
Get in.
I'll take you for a ride.
So, what are
you gonna do
With something
like this if you buy it?
Take it down to my beach home.
I got two defenders right now
That we're using to shuttle
our paddle boards
And surf boards.
Oh, yeah?
The beach where you live
would be what beach?
South hampton.
Got it.
Isn't the hamptons
like a rich area?
You got lots of money?
Uh, I guess.
Truck's real solid truck.
It's driving real nice.
Little bit of play
in the steering,
But some easy fixes
and the car will be perfect.
I paid 3,000 bucks
for this truck
And I hardly
put anything in it,
So anything over $3,500,
well, that's great.
What do you think
about that marc?
It's awesome.
Is it 15 grand awesome?
It's not 15 grand awesome.
Come on, man.
It's a cool truck,
and they're pretty hard to find.
I mean, to be rust-free.
It's got a couple of whiskey
dents in it and whatever.
But, you know, you said
you're from up in new york area?
Yes.
You ain't gonna find
a truck like this up there.
It'd be missing about everything
from the body molding down.
That's true, but I think
it's more of a 5,
Maybe 6 grand truck.
You got to be kidding me.
I mean, who do you think
you are, gas monkey?
The end of the day,
this truck's gonna bring 12
To 15 grand on the internet
no matter what.
How 'bout $14,000?
How 'bout $8,300?
Come on, man.
What kind of number is $8,300?
Who comes up with $8,300?
I mean, is it his
grandma's birthday or what?
I could come up
to about $10,000.
Getting closer.
All right,
so here's my final offer.
In cash.
All right.
$12,000.
You got cash?
I got cash.
Is that $ 12,000.
It's $12,000, count it out.
When he busted out
That was my number deal done.
And cash always works.
Cool, man.
All right, looks like I
just sold you a truck, brother.
You didn't sell him
anything, tony.
I did.
I'm the closer around here.
Well, I'm about
to do the paperwork.
That's when
the truck's sold.
Yeah.
You got the cash.
That's the easy part.
Why you bugging me?
Bug's ready.
Cool.
Can we drive it?
Let's go.
Let's bug out.
[ Engine starts, revs ]
What we have today
is a 1965 volkswagen bug
And a lot of monkeys
Because aaron's on vacation,
But we wanted to build
a proper bug,
So we had to start
with a proper bug.
I really like it.
We needed eliot's help.
He's our go-to volkswagen guy.
So I called him and said,
"Hey, I need a good
bug to start with
'Cause we don't have
a lot of time,
But we want to make
a proper bug."
[Bleep] yeah!
This thing is
in such great shape
That I got with
coy and tony
And I'm thinking this thing
can be saved, can't it?
Yeah, as a matter of fact.
We didn't have to do anything.
The paint was buffed out
And it saved you
a lot of time and money.
Well, technically, y'all were
still on salary, weren't you?
So maybe it didn't save you
all that much money.
Yeah.
But it did save you time.
So, when it comes to powering
this thing, talking with eliot
And his guys about building
us a monster motor,
Well, monster costs money.
That's wicked.
And $5,500 later, we've got
a pretty monster volkswagen.
Mike: started off with a 1600
cc motor making 40 horsepower.
Switched it over
to the big motor.
Over 200 horse.
This thing, fast.
So, we reached out to our
friends at airkooled kustom vw
And they hooked
us up big-time.
The way around,
Custom front end
to get it down low and mean,
Rear suspension,
you name it.
This stuff all came in one
pallet and it came quick,
Which allowed us
to meet our time frame.
Thanks, airkooled vw.
Boom.
When it comes to
installing the transaxle,
We reached out to our friends
at rancho performance transaxles
Because they make a unit
that is super-easy to put in.
Jason: with that transaxle,
we can get all that 200 horse
To those sticky tires
and make this one badass bug.
Hey, badass is my line.
[ Horn honks ]
I told the guys
in the paint shop
That I wanted the wheel centers
to match the interior.
When they got painted
the first time,
They were gray.
Can you explain that?
You just said,
"match the interior,"
Which we didn't have
an interior color to go with,
So we just
started painting.
I painted a color that jason
told me to paint,
Then I painted a color
that I thought looked good,
Then I painted a color
that you picked out.
So, we only did it,
like, four times,
And we were all wrong.
In the end,
we made them body color,
And that's not gonna
bug anyone.
To finish it off,
we redid the interior,
Freshened up
the brightwork,
And added a classic roof rack to
add a little old-school style.
So, there you have it,
guys and gals,
Our 1965 volkswagen bug.
Original paint, k*ller style,
k*ller power, ready for sale.
Give me a call.
What do you think aaron's
doing right now?
It's kind of like
seeing your parents naked.
You don't want
to think about it.
Ugh!
Hey, we'll see y'all back
at the shop.
Yeah, you know what?
Yeah.
Screw that.
Last time we crammed in this.
No thanks.
