04x23 - The Jed Polke Story

Post by bunniefuu »

It wasn't
one of our wagons in the direction.

It was headed.
It would bring out nothing but green.

I couldn't figure out why
anybody would try to make it a loan

to California

by easing.

Out too much of it.

Is you all.

There is, ma'am?

No. My husband.

He left three days ago to get help.

He took a horse to wander.

I guess it was wandered away.

Which way

to go? You.

You didn't see him?

No, ma'am.

But I rode Scout for a wagon train.

He might have come on. That.

I think it's best place for you to be in.

Come on, son.

Everything we own.

In that wagon by this tent, ma'am.

We'll try and send somebody
back for it. Mr..

Oh, Stormy.

Son, you get over.

Behind your mother.

You got to get home.

How many times have

I told you not to play Indians
with your father's knife?

When I get you back the wagon.

I'm going to take the switch to you.

And save this, which may have been a rock.

And it'll do better.

Okay, son, I take another
look at it in the morning. Huh?

Anything about people, right?

To hug them.

Have you been hurt?

Badly?

I went to see out there.

Is there sand rock?

Wasn't

that much like the San Joaquin Valley
of what they say is true.

Like Andersonville, they dug.

No, I cannot.

Yeah,

Hell, it's gone now.

All torn down and destroyed.

There's nothing left. There is a duck.

My brother's grave.

The other place he.

Hurry up.

Let me out. Oh, yes.

I know what you done with them.

I caught him with his hands by Silver.
Can I go to him?

I did not.

What's going on? Well,
I caught these people. My supply.

I want to.

They're going to resign. Line. He's lying.

Wait a minute, Charlie.

I'll handle this.

You don't miss crossing.

You're on that supply wagon myself.

I was just.

I didn't take anything.

I was.

Give it to me. Ten.

You don't need to see.

What did I tell you?

Better get back to your pies for the burn,
Charles.

Yeah.

You know, Doc, if you people who are short
on supplies, you get out of your city.

Mr. Hawkes,

you have. Doesn't even like it.

What do you take it for?

You ever been hungry, Mr..

And I don't mean for just a day or two,

but every day and every night

for 16 months, 487 days.

I'm hungry.

You eat, scrap a letter, a day's rations,
a pencil meal, a dried up sweet potato.

Sometimes, if you're lucky,
a scrap of vermin infested meat.

You've heard of Andersonville, Mr. Hawkes?

You mean a Confederate prison in Georgia
packed all of this up?

Prisoners sometimes develop
strong habits of survival.

Hoarding scraps of food is one of them.

Sometimes it carries over, even when
there is no longer any need for hoarding.

It better keep waiting.

Supply wagon docking
all Wooster's got a few habits of his own.

Anything just takes.

I'll see through return

Anything I hate as a thief.

Bill McCullough is coming in.

He's got a woman in the boy
with a bad shape, too.

You better bring the doctor.

Come on, I'll get back.

What happened?

So I just get a doctor.

We doctors come on now.

I have a project.

Mom. Let's get it out of the sand.

My wagons right here.

Put it in there,

Charlie.

I could sure you some food right now, son.

You better
have got to take a look at you two.

What do you happen about walking

for the last 4 hours?

Where did you find them?

Thanks.

I'm about eight miles south of here.

Off the trail.

Just the two of them. Yeah. What?

I can gather the husband took a team horse
and left him with the water.

Which way was he headed?

South.

There's nothing in that direction, Gray.

There is.

Yesterday
I cut the trail of a kind of a w*r party.

Not a big one.

Ten or 12,
Maybe if they had the scouts out

of trouble for us.

But sure, no.

With a single white

boy's fine,

little rest and some hot soup
allow the woman on her feet showed me

she's concerned about her husband.

I don't blame.

He's been out there for three days.

Will have a canteen of water.

But I promised I'd look for him.

A man deserves a grave and a headstone.

You get some rest.

I run up a few men and take a look.

No, I think it's better if you stay here,
Bill.

I'll be honest, since I get some food
in my belly and get cleaned up a bit,

I'm worried about her.

She'd be a lot happier if she had
the things that are in that wagon.

I'll send for her right away.

Good. Oh, you'll need an extra wheel.

And there's no sense of you
holding the train up here.

You planning on going out there alone?

Not too much ground to cover.

I think I have a dozen men with me, but,
I mean, we should meet up ahead.

How about sulfur springs?

Sulfur springs is good.

No later than tomorrow
night at the latest.

Right?

You kind of got that far, but spread out.

But keep inside.

Right?

Easy.

Even a dull.

Escape out of. I'm a drunk.

Have a cup of coffee with it.

Oh, thank you, ma'am.

I see.

Feeling

the doctor's in with a no no.

Better.
She won't feel any different either.

Not until they find her husband.

Yeah. If they find him,

it'll be up and around in no time.

I want you, son.

Name's caught.

By name.

It's you.

Were you in Big w*r?

I was an army surgeon.

Sun's gone down.

Be more pleasant for you by the fire.

I'd rather stay here.

My powers was in the w*r.

He didn't like it.

He never like to talk about it.

Some things are best forgotten.

I understand that.

Bringing your wagon in soon it'll help.

Having your own things.

Thank you, Doctor.

Allison Day.

I'm Reba.

Mrs. Jed Polk.

You're.

You're my husband.

As you feel that

I didn't expect to find yet, Cook alive.

A man with a half canteen of water
couldn't last more than a day

in this country.

I was just about to call a search. On

to bed.

Oh, but, you know, I'm.

Yes, I know.

What have you got against

my McCullough?

I don. Yep.

There's a

cabin boy aboard a ship
just like that for five years.

The old Marianne, the best damn dweller
ever to sail out of buzzards Bay.

You used to catch whale snapper.

In the smaller boats.

We carried on this one, Doris.
We call them.

They were smaller than the whale.

We went after her.

It took a lot of strength to harpoon
a whale.

Remember, the harpoon are in my boat.

Only the poor Dickie.

Why? He had an arm on him like that.

My power was strong too.

I bet you would have been the best harpoon
on your boat.

Sure, Sure you would.

Let me show you the tattoo
I had put on in the port.

Call Shanghai.

You see,

Glenn isn't back yet.

Ma'am,
I brought your wagon into the world.

Put that new wheel on it.

I'll have them moved up
behind this one in the morning.

Thank you.

I'll fix you up with the new team
and one of the Hannigan boys.

Be glad to drive for you.

I won't be leaving without my husband.

Well, Flint, the others will be back soon.

Of course we are, Miss POGUE.

Mr. McCullough is a fine scout.

If your man's out there,
they'll bring him in.

And they're right.

Here.

You don't.

Ma'am.

It's a little unusual for a family
to try to travel to California

all by themselves. What's your hurry?

I don't know.

Goodnight.

What are we.

Going to do, Duck?

They like that ain't fit to live.

Hmm. One thing

we ain't going to raise in
California is beans.

You get the wagon, right?

Yeah.

Dang fool was driving with a rear wheel
roast.

Exactly.

Crossed back yet?

You know,
I don't know how to figure a man like that

around to take a wagon
through this country, but I felt it.

We must have been in a powerful hurry.

Oh, he was running.

Running

from us

or his conscience.

I don't.

I don't follow you, Don.

How can he be running from us?

A woman that McCullough brought it.

She's dead. Right.

Jed Polk

walked out of my way.

If the woman in a boy,
they're not responsible for their Polk.

Have you forgotten? Reported case?
Oh, book.

Not his wife.

And this boy.

Don't try to stop me.

Why not? Now you're hanging for this.

Is that the way you want to pay
for your brother and all the others?

Maybe it's out of our hands anyway.

Have he's been out there

three days without water?

There's a passage in the Bible.

What?

Vengeance is mine, said the Lord.

No, no,

in a praying man.

But I'm praying now. A dark

night mask enabling Jed port in alive.

The Lord can have his back.

So after I get my hands on him, I'm

on. My hands starts running.

He runs for the rest of his life.

From what

happened.

Oh, you.

How do you think you're doing anyway?

I had a crack at the country. Geography
and it looks like I caught one.

Well, you're about to catch something else
as soon as I get loose from here.

Yeah, but you ain't to here.

Well, I am not now.

I don't know what's going to be you.

I had a trap set for death,
and you can't just like a cop.

Yeah, well,
what do you expect, Mr. Wooster?

What do you have in that mess, anyway?
I got a little thing.

I mixed up salt and vinegar, and
I put some quite submerged in to fibers.

Wow. I got to go and pull that one.

I don't know. Where I got to protect.

My sugar, don't I?

Do you mean to tell me

that you went through all of this trouble
just to catch your sugar?

You know,

you haven't worked as hard since you were
bucking for Corporal in a general's mess.

Well, I've had his opponent either,
Hannah. No,

Billy.

I think Michael will find that Billy.

I don't know.

Charlie sure feels sorry for that woman.

The little boy.

You sure be.

Take what people do
just to get to California.

Yeah, I suppose I am not ever going alone.

They were three days ahead of us.
We at Fort Myers.

You know, you'd think that they would
have known that we were behind them.

Give me a hand with them.

Yeah. Yeah.

Oh, that.

Would bother an animal.

We had words.

Oh, that got them.

Yeah. Well,
I'm gonna try to grab a hold of his leg.

I got to go

back.

I come to you.

CHEERING and it's a whiskey.

Charlie Yes, Jed.

It's all right, my.

Poor.

Son. He's going to be all right.

I don't take him.
You're wearing a duck, David.

Right now.

He's made it, but he's still alive.

God, I

stroke.

Doctor says he won't come.

He won't come.

Did you tell him that, Bill?

I'll talk to him.

There's a few things
I have to straighten out, but

Charlie don't.

Want to drink too much.

I just brought a man in
who needs medical attention, Doctor.

Not a man. McCullough

didn't hook.

There's a difference

areas.

Does McCullough

think he's going to make it?

Yeah.

You're planning on using that g*n,

so put the g*n away.

Well,

we don't want Mr.

McCullough to get a wrong impression.

I've already got
the wrong impression, Doctor.

You shouldn't have brought him
in, McCullough.

You should have let Jed die out there
as a stranger.

Words coming from a man
who's taken an oath to save human lives.

An oath I don't need to be reminded of.

Take a look around you, McCullough.

You know all of us

by name at least.

You ever wonder
why none of us were married?

Well, I'm single myself,
but by choice, my friend.

What's that got to do with Polk?

Everything.

We all of us have good reason to remember

Jed Polk

is Ross.

And yet

not yet 30.

His wound doesn't show.

McCullough.

But what it does to a man doesn't heal.

And there's no medical remedy.

The scar on Wall's face,
it stopped hurting long ago.

But some things make other kind of scars,

like seeing a younger brother die

and knowing it didn't have to be.

Jeff b*llet.

Nick Jeff's one,

but he's saying,

Hey, I'm going to die a long way

from Andersonville
under friendlier skies. No.

As for me,

when I joined the Army Medical Corps,

I was a promising surgeon.

You mean Jed Polk was responsible

for all of this?

There were 15,

Out of all the thousands of prisoners
rotting in Andersonville,

shared hope, shared plans,

And he was one of us.

We dug tunnels,

hopeless tunnels.

Never got us anywhere.

And then we got our chance.

By scraping and pooling our resources.

We got enough together
to bribe the guard at the North gate.

That night, when we got set to go,

that guard had been replaced,

replaced by a new recruit,

a young boy, and alongside him

we planned too long, waited too long.

We had to go that night or not at all.

Don't ask me why.

McCulloch

The question
the four of us asked each other

a thousand times since

that night.

Jed Polk sold out.

He wasn't with us when we made the break.

The new guard had been changed,
and they were waiting for us.

the inner stockade of that Northgate.

Ten of us still liberated that charge.

Georgia Swamp.

Later,

while we were recovering
in the prison hospital,

we found out that Jed had sold us out.

He made his own deal with Captain Works.

Why should he stay out?

To save his hide?

Ten of us were here.

I don't know why.

We were still in the hospital

when Lee surrendered.

We got together,

the four of us,

and began to look for Jed Polk.

He started running
and he kept running his wife

and his boy for four years.

We didn't even know if he was still alive.

You don't have to turn
when you bring him out.

McCullough

He had no more
along with this wagon train.

When you move out in the morning,

leave him behind.

I don't know anything about Jed Polk, but

he's got a wife and a kid that don't know
anything about Andersonville.

And when we move out,
his wedding goes with us.

We just want Jed McCullough.

That's a matter for the army courts.

Guards already had his trial, 14 of them
dead.

Four who will never forget,
will be in Fort Stockton in five days.

And they get there.

You can press charges, too.

The military authorities know
you're wrong,

Jed. Ain't never going to make it to Fort

Stockton.

One of the qualities

of a man in your profession
was compassion.

Dr.. Are going to be

all right management and worry about what
the Hennigan boys will drive.

You have hasn't been able to manage.

Oh, could I have a word.

With you, please?

I'm sorry, ma'am,
but the doctor won't be coming.

Won't come.

But y you don't know.

No, No, I don't.

He was nice to me in the cotton.

Well, when your husband's feeling better,
you might ask him.

Ask him what?

Mr. McCullough.

About Andersonville.

Give me the g*n.

Get it?

Why wouldn't he come last night?

You know Dr.

De, don't you? And those men with him.

Thought they were dead.

How's the boy

enjoying himself?

He's running a front

that way.

We've been running because of them

running ever since the end of the w*r.

Right after you got back.

Why did It's been hard on you

and on the boy, hasn't it?

It's no way to live.

It's not good.

I guess

I'm practically a stranger.

Come.

I tell you what happened at Andersonville.

Did I have a right to know

you died?

All of it. I told you.

You be up and driving
before we reach for stocking

was cotton.

He should be in bed by now.

Oh, he was round here just a minute ago.

Did you see where Cotton went?

You can't be very far.

No Cotton.

Cotton.

Your boy, Mrs. Polk?

Yes. I have been here some time.

He hasn't come this way.

Oh. Oh,

Aren't you

one of the men who brought in my husband?

I was with him.

You're with Dr.

Days Wagon, aren't you?

Why didn't he help my husband?

You'll have to ask him.

Mrs. Polk.

I'm asking you.

Please.

My husband is lying back there
in our wagon

with a loaded p*stol in his hand.

He's lying there afraid.

He's been that way ever since.

You knew that Doctor Allison Day
has been with this wagon train.

Why? What did he do?

I know that.

That he was a prisoner of w*r.

That that he was in
Andersonville was Doctor Day.

But I was with him, too. Mrs. Polk.

Perhaps you've heard of me.

Ross.

Amber.

Amber.

Yes. Yes.

Judge Leonard

mentioned you.

The list is long, Mr.

Spock.

A judge said that you were dead,

that you had all been k*lled
attempting to break out of the stockade.

Ten of us, Mrs. Polk.

But not all.

You hated, don't you?

You and Dr. Day.

A mild word
for what we feel about Jed Polk.

We're going to k*ll him.

She didn't know world.

He didn't know about us.

And at Andersonville.

Don't you go south.

Don't me now.

Not now.

What are you doing out here, son?

You are going to be back in camp.

Sleep. Oh, sleep soundly.

My mom didn't want me to bother. PA.

How is your pa?

He's pretty sick.

But Mom says you'll be well soon.

You know what? This is.

Just Iraq.

Sure.

What do you think it is?

I was hoping it was gold. Oh,

and why would you want to go?

Oh, lots of things.

Nice things for mama cr*cker,

Some.

But most of all, I'd like to buy me
a big farm.

California,
with horses, cows and a good brook.

And then maybe Mom would cry so much

and PA would have more time to stay home.

And maybe you wouldn't feel so

grumpy all the time.

Like your pa.

Best Palmer O world.

He ain't got much time for me.

You want to take fishin like he promised,

but he has other things
to think about first.

Mark Colvin worries.

Yeah,

I know.

I think it's because the w*r.

My powers in the w*r, he was a corporal.

He could have been general.

But wanted to be with the fighting
for you and the w*r, too.

Yeah.

Yeah.

We better get back to camp.

I think you might be looking for him.

We should probably go out.

Well, it looks like I got some new help.

On this ball. g*ns right here.

I back that out for you.

You recover fast, Mr.

Oil. Bananas.

McCullough.

I saved my life.

I'm beginning to wonder
if it was worthwhile

talking to Dr.

Alice Day and the others.

Keen Ross.

Yeah.

I told you I turned against him.

He sold him out.

Yeah,

but I wasn't there,
so I'm not sitting in judgment,

and you'll never know what it was like.

But for filthy,

never enough

to eat, living like animals,
clawing at dirt like rats

was the same for everybody
at Andersonville.

They didn't to make the break that night.

I try to argue with
them. They didn't have to go

saying I brought you in.

I figure you're sort of my responsibility
for four days.

Out of what? Stuck.

I do my best to get to that alive.

A man can run only so far.

I mean, quits being a man.

McCullough.

And through running,

that'll be the day, Don.

We'll be the fourth stop and pretty quick

with whatever time to get over the
the matter.

We walk now.

Maybe it's better that we walk better.

We forgot.

The four of us did, by the way
we swore we'd k*lled.

Yet when we found.

If you forgot, good. Yes.

But not the woman.

Not the boy.

I own it. Well, yeah, that's all.

But not here.

Not in the train.

No, no, not here.

This train stops at the north.

Cut off about noon.
Jeff already knows what to do,

Ross.

Now I can take your men.

Is that all right with you?

That will give you the same fancy.

Give us

a run for his life, Officer

Let's get the wagon moving

now. There you get.

I'm going with you.

I don't feel right about the car,
but trust.

I'm going to have a look around.

I'll meet you. A civil right.

All right,

let's move my trolley.

And I didn't like the.

Sign.

I'd cut the Kiowa patrol dog in the wagon
train like world

ranking a slow moving buffalo herd
waiting to cut down the straight.

And I wasn't easy about jet. Copy that.

I brought him in.

In a way, he was my responsibility,
and I promised he'd reach for it.

Stuck

it down

and. Give
us about 5 minutes after jump get.

Things going right.

Well, Mr.

Hawkes,
what can I fix for you today, Luke?

Tomatoes
and beans aren't being the tomatoes, John.

I wouldn't matter what you think,

because the way you cook,
everything tastes the same.

What do you expect going to?

Well, as little as another gravity
or maybe some caviar here.

Yeah. What's that?

Oh, it's a little round fish
you used to fix up for General Sherman.

You know,
I was quite a hyper heavy up here.

You can.

I was going to play you, Mr.

President. Cotabato.

Anybody else? No, but I have them.

All right.

I'll get the whole

island.

Your wife and kid, or just outside.

You want to hurt you? Yeah.

Walk out of here real quiet and easy.

Like I did.

You get a little. Close to a cactus today?

No, we're all right.

A while ago, I gave my feedback
while Kate was fixing the kids.

Something to eat? Well,
we better get them back.

Get those spines up.

You don't go faster on you.

Let the boy go.

No, no. We got to take him with us now.

We can't let him get back
to the White House. Let's roll.

Get him.

In a way,

we plan on leaving the train.

Any objections?

Is it kind of a w*r party
somewhere in these hills?

You're pretty tough on a single leg,
and we'll catch it

alive.

Sounds like you're not traveling alone.

I told you Jed
Polk wouldn't make it to Fort Stockton.

It was.
You brought him into it. McCullough.

You might as well
be with us when we finish.

Step down off that horse.

I was the last one.

Mr. Hart.

It's a trouble, miss.

Both my husband's gone and Cotton.

I can't find him anywhere you look.

And Dr. Days Wagon has gone to Mr. Hawkes.

I was meaning to ask you about it.

Oh, no, no, Jim.

But, my boy.

I gotta try to get a move.

Back in town, a few men

outside.

Get on your feet.

What are we going to do

now? The new boy.

Helps you get out of this wagon.

Good, Good.

You're going to find a better place.

What about the boy?

He stays inside. He won't get hurt.

No, I'm not here.

Please. Not with him in there. You can't.

We're giving you a running start,
and that's a more of a chance

than you give us.

Kane, you k*ll him,
and I promise you you'll hang.

That's enough.

Well, let's get this over with.

Not here like this.

You give me a chance.

Start running

for you.

Start running or I'll k*ll you right here.

All right.

Got your horses?

I have.

Why? You sure

about

how I got my.

It's all right.

Party.

Get up.

I don't know

why I sold you out,

but God,

when they take us on us,
we were set for a break.

My brother.

I tell

you, tells the South,

He understands.

That's a boy.

That the boy.

It was him

or you.

All of you.

Why didn't you tell us?

I was afraid

Danny didn't mean anything to you.

It's just another enemy soldier.

That's why I didn't say anything.

I was afraid to go anywhere k*lling.

I had a choice to make.

I made it

the only way I had to

would help

me, Huh?
