Right now on "fast n' loud"...
Time to go racing.
...hot-rod hunter
Richard rawlings
and master mechanic
Aaron Kaufman
are in the race
of their lives...
Good luck,
suckers.
...as they transform a '67 dart
into a badass dragster...
So loud.
...to face off
against some Internet upstarts.
A speck
in Richard's shoe.
Key on.
Meanwhile, as Aaron
attempts to break new ground
with a hellcat engine...
Nope.
Software will k*ll it
every time.
...Richard sends Dennis
after a vintage movie icon...
Wow.
There it is.
...that puts a song
in his heart.
* love is

stay tuned
for a gearhead g*n battle
that could crown the monkeys
kings
of the Internet badassess...
Gas monkey!
Gas monkey!

as roadkill
in the mechanics' hall of shame.
The throttle's
non-responsive on it
like it was stuck
in high gear.

hey give us silence
for a minute.
All right,
so you guys ready?
'Cause I can't waste
Aaron's time. He's busy.
Aaron!
There you are.
What's up, dude?
All right.
Uh, roadkill... the guys that
challenged us to this drag race.
Well,
I think it's time
for you and me
to give them a special message,
you know, let them know
exactly where we're coming from.
So, you guys all know
that Aaron and I
are in the business of building
cars, not making videos.
Well, that all changed
Good to go up?
Yep.
We were beginning to build
a '67 dodge dart
like the one
my dad used to drive.
Then we heard fans
of some gearheads
that have an Internet show...
Hey, Richard rawlings.
It's roadkill.
...were talking some trash
about us on social media.
We're cake decorators
and we don't work on cars.
There's another guy on here
saying that our heads are too big.
Now, here at gas monkey, we take
a lot of pride in our work,
so that didn't go over too well.
I'm tired of people
talking
you can't poke at a bear
and not expect to get bit.
So, we accepted
roadkill's challenge
to build a car and race them
on a drag strip in Detroit.
We're not
"chicken non-car guys
who are afraid to gamble."
We're in. We'll race. Let's go.
Hee-haw!
I mean, this was w*r.
What we're gonna do
is 1/8-mile drag race.
Oh, yeah.
Street-race style.
Now, we knew that those guys
were gonna fix up a charger
that they already had
called the general mayhem.
And since we only had 17 days
to make it to the starting line,
we enlisted the help
of our dart.
We got to bring fast,
strong, light.
A racecar with some headlights
and taillights?
That's the ticket.
Aaron had all sorts
of ideas to make it faster...
Back-half the frame,
new suspension,
and, well, slick tires.
Since I'm a dodge guy
and roadkill guys
are dodge guys, too,
turns out that there's one thing
that both our cars
would have in common...
A brand-new 2015707-horsepower
dodge hellcat motor.
But here's the rub.
The guys at Chrysler told Aaron
that in order to use that motor,
we had to use the original
transmission that it came with
and the original wiring harness
that controls, like,
power windows
and all that fancy stuff.
But...
I don't believe that
to be true at all.
In fact, I think it's crap.
They engineered it
to run with it.
We can engineer it
to run without it.
Aaron wanted to cut out
all the unnecessary weight
that could slow the dart down,
so he decided to do
what they said not to do...
And, frankly, what nobody's
ever been able to do.
He stripped off the wire harness
and mated up that motor
with a powerglide
two-speed transmission.
Something doesn't sound
very good.
Hit it again.
Sure enough,
he ran into trouble.
It doesn't sound to me
like it's firing the injector.
He can't even get the motor
to fire.
And now we only have four days
to get the dart ready
to go to Detroit
if we want to be on
the starting line on race day.
If Aaron and the guys can't get
the dart running by then,
well, gas monkey will be the
laughingstock of the interwebs.
We're definitely down,
but we're not out.
And we only have one message
for the roadkill guys.
You don't have
a snowball's chance in hell.
You challenged us.
We'll be there.
Bring it on.
Or general mayhem.
Whatever.
Good luck,
suckers.
He called y'all
suckers.
All right,
now.
In all seriousness,
I need to get
that freakin' engine running.
I'm well-aware of it.
**
**
Hey.
¿¿¿¿Qué pasó,
man?
Aaron.
Yes, sir.
Good to see you.
Yeah, you, too,
man.
Thanks for
coming to help us out.
I don't think
that we can go much further.
I feel pretty confident in
what we've done with the wiring
and what we've eliminated
out of the factory one.
But we're at a point now
that I think
that there's answers
we need out of the computer.
Charles has been handling
the wiring on this one
and the thinning
of the original harness.
I think the first thing
we probably should do
is go ahead
and plug into it,
and then we'll at least
be able to see
what the computer's doing.
Sure.
I knew I was taking on
a big challenge
whenever I decided to use
the hellcat motor
without its transmission
and wiring harness.
So, when Charles and I couldn't'
get the engine to fire,
it was obvious
that we had a computer problem.
So, we put a call out
to HP tuners,
and they sent up one of their
closest techs from Houston.
Let me
get hooked up here.
These design
and write tuning software
to solve problems
just like this.
Usually they hook up their
laptops, press a few buttons,
and before you know it,
everything's talking,
everybody's happy.
You get masters on.
He needs the key on.
Okay.
Key on.
No dice?
No dice.
Not getting any information
off the car.
Detect protocol failed.
I need
to make a phone call.
We plugged into the dart,
and we had zero communication
with the computer.
When I plug into the car,
it won't gather info
and it won't read.
And we got power
to the PCM.
I've got my engineers
working on some solutions.
That looks like
it could be a problem.
It doesn't see anything
on the end of it.
This car
needs to be on a trailer
and headed to Detroit
in four days,
and I need most of that time
to get the motor dialed in
and race-ready.
So, if we're not running
tomorrow morning,
we could be
in some real trouble.
All right.
Try this again.
Power on.
Accessory on?
Yeah.
"Vehicle power
not detected."
This is Richard.
Hey.
About to roll up on
this "corvette summer" car.
Yeah.
Well,
get a good deal, man,
'cause if that is what it is,
it could make us a lot of money.
So, the other day,
my best buddy, Dennis,
got wind of a very special car
in southbury, Connecticut,
that we wanted to pick up
as a joint venture.
The thing is, we needed to make
a move on this one really fast,
and I just can't leave
the dart build right now
with everything
up in the air.
So, gonna have to cut the cord
and let Dennis handle this one
for the both of us.
Yeah. I'm just pulling up
to the house now.
Well,
don't forget...
I want to offer a lot less
than you want to spend.
All right.
I'll call you after.
- Bye.
- Later.
Morning, sir.
How are you?
Good. Good.
Good to finally meet you
after all these conversations.
Yeah. Nice meeting you, too.
Thank you.
So, where
is this beast?
I'm dying
to see it.
Well, it's here
waiting for you.
All right.
Wow.
There it is.
**
Well,
even a part-time car guy
can see that this is not
your average corvette.
It just screams '70s, though.
It's great.
This one is right out of the
The movie was a popcorn flick
about a kid trying
to reclaim a stolen car
featuring Mark Hamill
and Annie potts.
But in my opinion,
the real star of the show
was the '73
custom corvette stingray.
I'm dying
to see the hood.
Look at that.
That's got to be
one of the craziest hoods
on a corvette ever.
Mgm had two of them built
for the movie.
One was sold
to an Australian collector.
This could be the other one.
An unlike the other stars
in the movie,
this one doesn't look like
it's aged a day.
Wow, the car's in way better
shape than I thought it was gonna be.
I mean, a lot
of these movie cars were...
Kind of just
thrown together.
What is the backstory on it?
What do you know about it?
Well,
from the research that I did
and the fellow
that I got it from,
there was the actual car
that they used
in the action shots
of the show
and this one here, which was
basically to promote the movie.
So, can we look
at the motor?
Absolutely.
The base platform of this car
is just a '72 corvette 350,
turbo 400,
and low or no options.
Does it have
power steering?
Uh, no.
However, from a '70s standpoint,
it just bleeds cool.
This is what everybody wanted
back then.
They wanted side exhaust.
They wanted the western wheels. They
wanted this big, flamboyant bodywork,
and this car has got all that.
And it's famous.
I think it's very cool.
We ready to roll?
I'm ready.
Let 'er rip.
I don't even see it.
Maybe we should
switch seats.
**
**
Well, I didn't have Annie potts
in the passenger seat,
but it was still a nice ride.
Man, these roads
are just fantastic.
Need to have a road rally
through here, sir.
That is cool.
There you have it.
The car runs
and drives really well.
However, we've got to be careful
on a car like this.
We may not be able
to advance it.
So, my comfort level
really was around 20 grand.
I think Richard wanted to be
more in $15,000 to $17,000 Mark.
Let's just see
where this guy's head's at.
Well, I like it. I like
the story. The car's cool.
What are you thinking
on price?
Well, uh, I've given it
some thought.
This car was sold
for mid-$30,000s in the past.
So, I'm thinking
of somewhere in that range.
Okay, mid-$30,000s tells me this
guy's at least not delusional.
However,
he is pretty optimistic.
Yeah, it's a movie car, however
that movie... it was 1978.
We're gonna have to completely
re-educate the public
as to what this car is.
It's a neat car,
but at the end of the day,
it's a custom corvette.
I think
that's a pretty narrow market.
I get it, but I got
to convince the next guy.
I'm thinking $17,500.
How about $23,000?
How about
Call it a day?
That's your best?
Yes, sir.
Yeah?
Okay.
I'll do it at $20,000.
Great.
Okay.
All right.
Let's go do some paperwork.
I'm happy with $20,000.
As far as Richard,
I never know
what Richard's gonna do
or what he's gonna think.
It may show up in the shop
and he thinks
it's the coolest thing ever
and he's got to have it
and he's gonna put
his gold chains on
and use it as a driver.
Or he may hate it.
**
So, we've turned off
the anti-theft.
It connected.
We have communication
with the PCM.
So excited
I can't see straight.
Man, I can't believe that was all that
was blocking us out this whole time.
It's all
part of the game.
We've finally
established communication
with the computer.
It took us about six hours
to figure that out,
but when you're doing something
for the first time,
the fact that we figured it out
is a good thing.
Now we can do
some modifications to it
and hopefully
get the motor to fire up.
All right.
Our new tune file
has been written.
Ignition back on,
please.
On or off?
On, please.
We'll see if we get any...
Any fire this time.
Nope.
So, once we could
actually talk to the computer,
Patrick threw everything
in his arsenal at our problem,
but we still
couldn't get it to fire.
I guess this engine is so new
that not many people out there
have much experience with it.
Nothing on
the graph,
so we're out of options
for tonight.
We're done.
All right.
We've tried every cable,
everything.
I'm just as baffled
as you are
as to what's gonna make it
actually start.
We're gonna keep
hammering away at it,
but it looks like it's time
to come up with plan "b."
I've got to find someone
who has an answer.
There's nothing
we can do tonight,
and so let's
call it.
And then let's get back at it
in the morning.
And one more day closer
to deadline, but...
It's what
we can do.
All right. Cool.
Let's wrap it up, then.
Just proves even when you finish
building the car mechanically...
Software will k*ll it
every time.
Correct.
So...
#gohomeandgetsomerest.
#I'mtired, man.
I'm ready to bounce.
Yep.
#callitanight.
**
Coming up on "fast n' loud"...
Thanks for showing up,
guys.
...with race day looming,
the cavalry arrives.
The guys from diablosport
come to save the day.
Come on.
But will they succeed
with firing the hellcat?
**
Our '67 dart drag car build
has hit a bit of trouble.
After removing
the original wiring harness
to eliminate some dead weight,
I still haven't managed to get
our 2015 hellcat motor to fire.
The dart needs to be ready
and loaded on the trailer
in three days
so it can get to Detroit in time
for the roadkill showdown.
Thanks for showing up,
guys.
Yeah, man.
Appreciate it.
So, when I found out
about some guys in Florida
that have experience
with this late-model mopar stuff
like this...
The guys from diablosport
come to save the day.
How's it going, guys?
How's it going, man?
Nice to meet you.
How are you doing?
...i thought it was well-worth
the cost of a pair of airline tickets
to get the guys here and see
if they could get us going.
So, I'll show you
what we got.
Thing's about as
stripped down as it'll get, huh?
Yeah. We didn't build this
for street service.
It was built
to win.
It acts
like it wants to run,
so obviously, we have a live
and awake computer,
but it's waiting for something
before it'll turn on the coals.
You have a diagnostic port
in here somewhere?
We do.
Inside.
No sense in sitting around,
you know?
True.
Most important tool.
That's pretty cool.
You're physically
gonna open the computer?
I'm physically
gonna do it.
Mary, and Joseph.
People say
"crack open the computer."
Yeah.
Like, literally.
So, these guys come in.
The reset the computer
on the car back to factory,
coded in
some new instructions...
I'll try it out.
See how it works.
...and then started to try to
see what the hang-up was on it.
Oh, that's funny.
I can get codes off of it.
When I try
to flash it,
it doesn't want anything
to do with it.
Let's monitor that output...
The starter output.
And let's also
monitor the asd.
So, it's been a few hours,
but the diablo guys think
they finally have a bead
on why our engine won't fire.
I had all the switches
that we need to run the car,
including the ignition,
wired directly
to the power-control module,
or the PCM,
which is the only computer
that I wanted in the car.
But the diablo guys think
that the computer
might be looking for
a keyless-entry signal,
which it typically receives
from another unit
called the body-control module.
You want antennas just wired
to this directly?
Yeah, direct wire.
So, at this point,
we're gonna try to attempt
to take the bcm, power it up.
It talks
to a radio frequency...
Hub.
...Hub.
It's got a couple of antennas,
one of which receives a signal
from your key
when you get into your car.
Basically triggers everything,
says, "okay, the key's in the car."
And we're also gonna wire a
push-button starter to the bcm,
which would be typical
of your normal car setup.
These are
the bare essential modules
in order to talk to the computer
so that we can say,
"okay, listen.
I'm pressing the start button."
This will talk to the computer,
and the computer
will hopefully respond.
And then it'll send out
the signals that it needs
in order to start.
**
You guys ready?
Yep.
Everything's wired up.
Let's see
what it does.
Okay.
Head's up,
Aaron.
Yeah. You're good.
Come on.
I thought
y'all had this?
Dang!
Yeah!
Brother. Unh!
Well, there you have it.
Chrysler said that
we couldn't make this thing run
without the entire harness,
but hot-rodders
have been defying the odds
for over 80 years now,
and we just did it again.
Way to go.
k*ller job, guys.
Only a couple hours.
Congratulations.
That's
the first hellcat
not running
on its entire wiring harness.
That's the first
standalone hellcat.
You absolutely k*lled it,
man.
Of course,
nobody's going home yet.
We still
have a ton of work to do.
The car's got to be ready
to be dynoed tomorrow.
But sleep is the last thing
on our minds right now anyway.
At least with the help
from these guys,
we're still in the race.
Great job, man.
All right, man. Thanks.
**
I had to send Dennis
to get this, Tony.
Man, intercity,
when they show up,
it's like
Christmas morning.
Look at this.
What do we got?
We got the show car
from "corvette summer."
"Corvette summer."
It looks like it.
Mark Hamill
before he was Luke Skywalker.
So, Dennis picked up
this '73 corvette movie car
up in Connecticut for a song,
and I'm hoping to make a k*lling
on it
when I sell it at auction
in a couple months.
You know you got the vhs
of "corvette summer"
still at
your house.
Yeah.
Well, it's on beta.
I'm not into movie cars,
per se,
but I did make a good profit off
that "iron man" car I flipped.
That's that "iron man" car,
dude.
Robert downey Jr.
Learning to fly, crashed out.
And that one didn't even run,
so I figured let's roll the dice
again, see who's interested.
How ridiculous.
I'll get it
from there, sir.
That's pretty crazy.
With all the money
I'm not gonna make on my dart,
I got to cash in on this.
I mean, it's a corvette
that Mark Hamill drove
in "corvette summer."
Practically sells itself.
* love is
a many splendid thing *
**
What's going on?
Hey, Aaron.
Nice to see you, man.
Hey, you, too.
So, a couple things
about our car.
This is
the first hellcat standalone
running outside
of a hellcat.
Very cool,
man.
We're overdriving the blower.
We're on e-85 and long tubes.
Past that, we've got powerglide
So, let's see
what we can make.
Let's split
or scream, man.
So, yesterday, we finally
got the engine to fire,
which was an incredible relief.
And today, we're gonna get her
custom-tuned.
Why do we have to do that?
Well, to make her go fast,
I've used a lot of tricks
that are pretty well-known
in the drag community
to squeeze everything
out of an engine.
I've switched our fuel from gas
to e-85,
which is an alcohol blend.
And we're overdriving
the blower,
which produces more air volume,
as well as more heat.
But the colder
we can get the air,
the more fuel it will carry,
which translates
into a bigger expl*si*n.
So, we're using
an inner cooler system
that runs water
through an ice box,
which will help reduce
our intake air temperature.
Who's that guy
running the ice bag?
I don't know.
Yeah.
Squeeze it in there.
In addition,
we've mated
a stock hellcat engine
to a racecar transmission,
which uses a torque converter,
which is like a clutch
for an automatic transmission.
It determines at what rpm the
transmission starts to engage.
If I can tune them all to act
together the way that I want,
I should be able to rip down
the 1/8-mile drag strip
in something like 6 seconds...
Plenty of speed to win the race.
We're gonna finish off
dialing in the base on it,
get a little closer
on the injectors.
You know,
a couple passes at that,
and then... then
we ought to be ready to go.
**
**
So, Jon and Brian from diablo
got the car up on the dyno
and started running a baseline.
Wow. Wow.
That was so, so loud.
I mean, yeah,
the engine sounded great,
but I could see right away
that something wasn't right
on the computer.
I should be getting a 3,000-rpm
sample out of this engine,
but right now,
I'm only getting 500.
Hey.
There's not much there,
is there?
I suspect
that the lack of horsepower
is a product
of the torque converter.
If the one that installed is not
the right match for this setup,
the transmission and the engine
will never operate efficiently
together.
If that's the case, then we need
to get back to the shop
and get it on a lift
and pull the converter.
That's pretty much what it is.
Okay.
I guess we're going back
to the batcave.
At this late date,
the only thing I can do now
is pull the transmission
and install
a different torque converter
and roll the dice with that one.
If we can't get enough power
from the engine
to the back wheels,
well,
this race we're trying to win
might just end up being on foot.
Coming up on "fast n' loud"...
...the gas monkey team
arrives in Detroit...
Oh, yeah!
Time to go racing.
...and meets their Nemesis.
We're from a little,
tiny web show.
The speck
in Richard's shoe.
So, you don't think
we build real cars, huh?
Does this look real to you?
So, you say we're just
a bunch of little b*tches.
**
Well, what's that make you
when we beat you?
So, you think we're just
cake decorators around here?
Not true, but I do have
a culinary arts degree.
**
Our heads are too big?
**
Well, here's what
we got to say to that.
Drum roll, please.
The shart cat!
Basically, the '67 dart
was supposed to be a throwback
to my younger years
as a newspaper thrower
and, you know, jacked up
and fast with racing stripes.
But then...
Hey, Richard rawlings.
...these roadkill guys
said,
"hey,
we challenge you to a race."
So, I turned it over to him
and the guys at the shop,
and they
got after it.
This was really
a departure for us,
because we didn't have to make
a really exciting-looking car.
We needed to make one
that was fast.
First, we needed a very strong,
light chassis
that was gonna be able
to transmit power
all the way
to the ground.
That being the case,
we decided to cut out everything
from the driver's seat
all the way to the taillights
and back half the car.
That's real close.
Once we got that tacked in,
we hung our nine-inch rear end,
four-link rear suspension,
coil overs,
and then started
working on our cage.
You know,
the front suspension
really wasn't
gonna hold up well, either,
so we switched it out
for a Magnum-force cradle.
Onward.
The next thing we did
was pull that brand-new 2015
hellcat engine off the shelf.
It's a root supercharger
on a pretty sizable engine.
The only catch... I didn't need
any of the hellcat systems,
so that was
the biggest challenge.
How do we make this thing
run on its own?
I replaced the original
six-speed transmission
with a powerglide
two-speed.
Fewer shifts means
I'm quicker to the top speed.
On top of that, we needed
to cool the supercharger down,
so we got rid
of the water-to-air exchanger
in favor
of an ice box.
What does that mean?
Basically,
we're putting ice-cold water
in the back
of the car,
pumping it all the way
into the supercharger,
trying to get our intake
air temp as low as possible.
Why?
So we can carry more fuel,
more boost, more bang,
and hopefully get down the track
a lot faster.
Of course, there's only so much
that we can do on normal fuel,
even race fuel,
so we converted to e-85.
We rebuilt
the entire fuel system.
We're using an air-motive tank,
air-motive pump,
and hopefully
we can keep this monster fed.
We capped it all off
with some wilwood brakes
and some k*ller
Now,
when it came to fire,
well, that's when
the real trouble began.
But we found our way.
We contacted diablosport.
And Jon and Brian
made that happen.
The end result...
We have the shell of a '67 dart,
a bunch of hodgepodge stuff
that we've all shoved together,
and inside, the only standalone
hellcat on the planet.
Of course, you know
that when the car got finished,
we took it
to the dyno,
and that didn't go quite as well
as we wanted it to.
And then, uh, you guys
had to pull the transmission
and put in
a brand-new torque converter.
So, how do you think
we stand now?
Can our shart cat do the job
and eat those roadkill guys up?
You know, we'll only find out
once we get there, stage,
and the light
goes green.
Past that,
anyone's race, I guess.
From what
I understand,
Detroit's
one big service road anyways.
Get this thing loaded.
**
Oh, yeah.
Time to go racing.
So, we're in Pontiac, Michigan,
at the famed silverdome.
It's set up to be a racetrack
for today
'cause we're at the
roadkill event, roadkill nights.
Yeah.
A couple weeks ago,
they started challenging us
on the interweb,
and usually, we don't
pay too much attention to that
because everybody talks
a little on the interweb
when they're
in their mom's basement,
tacking away
on the keyboard,
but this time, we said,
"why not? We'll take you on.
Head-to-head race.
And let's go."
That's stylish.
Actual metal bumper.
I'll give them credit
for that.
**
What's up?
I'm Richard.
Hi. Mike.
Mike.
David freiburger.
How are you?
Hey, man.
Right on.
Aaron.
What's up?
How's it going, guys?
He's Mike Finnegan.
I'm David freiburger.
And we're from a little,
tiny web show,
the speck in Richard's shoe,
called "roadkill."
Is it that small?
We made a drag strip.
That's true. We did make
a drag strip all on our own.
How bad can we be?
Yeah, we're big time.
Dang, man.
You got enough Nitrous knobs
under there?
You gonna try
to blow up or fly?
I guess
you'll see.
Because you'll be back here
watching the hood fly off.
So, general mayhem
is a 1968 charger
that Dave
got from a guy
who he traded
a set of cylinder heads to.
And we went out and bought
a really crappy motor home
and plucked out
the engine.
We put the thing together,
and really,
it was an off-road
sort of rally car.
Basically,
that car had 200 horsepower,
and you could
pretty much drive it
with your foot flat to the floor
at all times.
Well, throw the hood up.
Let's see what you got, man.
That's one
hell of a hood scoop.
Yeah, yeah,
yeah, yeah.
It's purty.
Look at that.
The general mayhem today
is still basically the same car
in the sense that we didn't
gut it out all lightweight.
It's still got
leaf Springs in it.
But it has
the hellcat engine
and the eight-speed
torqueflite transmission
and the entire wiring harness
from a 2015 charger.
You know,
it went from 200 horsepower
to 700-Ish horsepower,
and it's downright dangerous.
Like that.
As you know,
we got everything.
Factory inner coolers.
Everything.
That is an entire freakin'
hellcat underneath there,
isn't it?
Yep. And we do have
the regular factory eight-speed
in the thing.
No extra boost.
Regular gasoline.
Nothing done to it whatsoever.
Just fogger.
So, I saw general mayhem
for the first time.
I have to admit...
I'm not really afraid of it.
Other than boosting their fuel
with some Nitrous,
they basically took
the hellcat driveline as-is...
Pretty much
the opposite of what we did.
So, let's see yours.
Yep.
You did manage the a.C.
And power-steering delete.
We left
our power steering on.
Yeah, we decided
that I didn't need them.
This hellcat is,
from what I understand,
the only standalone hellcat
on the planet right now.
So, you got coil overs
on it, too.
The good news about showing up
here and seeing gas monkey's car
is that
there was no surprises.
We had moles
out there in the industry
telling us
exactly what was going on.
So, I knew it was a dart. I knew
that it had a powerglide in it.
I knew it was a back-half car
with a four-link.
You know, which is why,
by the way,
when we went online
and gave Richard our rules,
which he asked for
repeatedly,
we gave him rules that we knew
would not fit that car.
You know
what the big surprise is?
It's not a piece of crap.
Not at all.
It's actually really nice.
No, it's actually really cool.
This is nice. This is really nice work. I
shouldn't even be complimenting you,
but it is very nice.
You got it running
day before yesterday, right?
Yep.
That's it, man.
That should
make it interesting.
The biggest thing
I'm worried about
in the whole drag race
is the powerglide.
Because he's got
a drag-race converter in it.
He's got a trans brake,
which means
he can get out of the hole
way quicker than I can.
And with like
a 600-foot race,
there is not a lot of track
to catch him.
But on
the other hand,
he could absolutely Blaze
the tires out here
on this whoop-Dee-Doo fest
of a track.
And we have
the advantage of the fact
that we've been here
all day,
and we know
what is the good Lane.
Yes, we do.
They're not getting that Lane.
Let's go racing, 'cause then
we can start drinking.
Cool. Okay.
So, now that we got
the pleasantries out of the way,
each of us is gonna get
a few runs down the track
before
the actual showdown,
which means
we finally get to find out
if the changes Aaron made
to our shart cat
have helped us
or hurt us.
I've got no seat time in it,
but I think it's...
I think
it's the one to bet on.
**
Coming up on "fast n' loud"...
Roadkill's car
is ready to rumble.
Wow. What do you think
about that, man?
But can the dart keep pace?
What the.
The answer when we return.
The answer is "a."
Dubbed the family car
of the future,
the Aspen shared the same engine
as the dart, but not much else.
Here we go.
Ladies and gentlemen,
that's David freiburger
underneath the helmet
right there.
And of course, you'll see him
go down the track
in a little bit.
So, we just got
an up-close look-see
at roadkill's... I guess
you could call it racecar.
But we still
have some time
before our big
drag-race showdown.
General mayhem's supposed to
make a couple runs here in a minute,
race a few cars,
kind of show off and get ready.
Go ahead, freiburger!
You're clear!
We'll have the advantage
of watching
and seeing what their strong
points are and weak points are
or just generally getting
a good comical laugh out of it.
Here it comes.
Every time you pull up
to the line to do a drag race,
you got to do a burnout first.
Drag-racing tires perform better
at higher temperatures,
and a burnout is the quickest
way to get those temps up there.
Front brakes
locked up, man.
You guys feel good about that?
What do you think?
I do not feel good
about that at all.
I'm gonna stand over here
between y'all.
Everybody jump behind
if it goes bad.
It looked good!
It's good from my house!
Here he comes.
Wow. What do you think
about that, man?
Still not
as fast as our car.
So, we've got
proof positive
that roadkill's general mayhem
can make it down the track.
It actually went a lot faster
than we expected.
Now it's my turn to test
the dart out on the track.
As you may recall,
we were working on it
right up to the minute
we had to hit the road.
So, I've got... I've got
a barely put together car
and no time
in it.
So, we'll see
what happens.
Yeah, we're gonna run down
the track, see what happens.
It's just
a practice run.
**
Y'all ready to go?
We're ready to go.
Do we get
a green light?
**
Let's warm up
those tires.
Hey!
Can he get a little more water?
Oh, yeah.
There we go.
Yeah!
Yeah!
Yeah!
That's what we call
the shart cat!
The first pass
was k*ller.
Get you some!
I could not
have been happier.
I mean,
the car is ridiculously fast.
Our main advantage
is our ability to hook
and get
out of the hole quickly,
and everything worked
exactly like it was supposed to.
Right now,
I'm gonna lay down one more run
and then kick back
until race time.
What the
crap. Yeah.
Last burnout did something
to the tr*nny,
didn't it?
I don't know.
So, if Aaron's first run
was pure heaven,
well,
the last run was pure hell.
I think my lawnmower
could have done better.
Go.
Go back
to the trailer.
Find out what's going on. Let's
go see what the problem is.
Check
all the coils.
Coil?
What?
Coil go out?
We got oil pressure,
fuel pressure?
I lost
the throttle.
The throttle
was non-responsive on it,
and then it would come back
and then it would go.
And it was there
and it'd go.
And it felt like
it was stuck in high gear.
What do we need?
Is it tr*nny
or did we lose power?
No,
it's power.
It felt like the ratio
and pedal was just...
It was off, like they weren't
synched at all,
between pedal
and throttle.
And then, when it went,
it just felt like a...
It felt like
I was in high gear
and pulling a 40-foot trailer
behind me.
I don't know what caused it
is the bad part.
Anytime
you have a problem like this,
the first thing you want to do
is eliminate the usual suspects.
With race time approaching fast,
we're gonna have to do it fast.
I did a quick scan
under the car.
Nothing seemed out of place.
I just went down the list,
checking off
every single possible culprit.
You think
the tr*nny's okay?
Don't know.
I had
an engine problem, as well.
We don't really know
exactly what the problem is,
and it could be systematic
failure of a couple things.
The tr*nny fluid is clean.
There's nothing in it.
How's it smell?
Smells good.
So, Brian's checking it out,
see if we find any anomalies
in the computer,
if anything bad happened,
what happened.
It would be heartbreaking
to put so much into this dart
and have it turn out
all for naught.
We don't feel
too hot, either.
We're running cool.
No. It's something simple.
We'll fix it.
Well,
you got 60 minutes.
We only have
a little over an hour
before we got to be back at the
starting line, ready to race,
and if we're not there,
well, that's a forfeit.
It's do or die time right now.
This is it.
We show up with a car
that either runs or doesn't,
because next time out there,
it's their car and our car.
And, uh, right now,
we're not moving too fast.
**
Hey, daph?
What?
Have you heard anything
from the guys?
Did they win?
I haven't heard anything.
Nothing?
Not a thing.
Well,
it's quiet.
We're the only ones here.
Why are we here?
Drinks?
Hell, yeah!
Let's go!
What are
we gonna drink?
I think there is a Martini
called roadkill.
Got a good lead!
What's going to happen?
Oh, no!
So, gas monkey's way
up here in Pontiac, Michigan,
at the silverdome
for a drag-race showdown
against a couple of guys
with a little Internet show
called "roadkill."
All right, guys.
So, how do we choose
who's gonna be in what Lane?
Uh, I'm in
the right Lane.
Well,
that's not fair.
You've already been running
in the right Lane.
This is my party.
You can cry if you want to.
I'm in
the right Lane.
This is how much I care.
Yeah.
You know what?
It's y'all's event.
Y'all take your right Lane
and get after it, brother.
Thank you.
All right.
That's a giver.
These guys
and some of their fans
have been trash-talking
our gas monkey builds,
so we brought our '67 dodge dart
up here
to shut them up for good.
The problem is
the last time it went down
the track on a practice run,
well, your grandmother
could have made better time
on one of those little scooters.
Now we're supposed to be at
the starting line in 20 minutes,
and Aaron hasn't had much time
to figure out what went wrong.
All right.
So, what's the deal?
Oh, we don't know.
That's it.
We don't have enough experience
with the car.
Car's... you know, it's a baby.
It's brand-new.
And so, uh, could have been
a plug issue.
We changed
our coils out.
We got fuel pressure.
Everything seems fine.
We can't find anything.
We gave it a little more fuel.
Well, there you have it.
We don't really know
what went wrong,
but hoping that it's an
anomaly... anamal... anomaly.
I mean, it already made
one great pass this afternoon.
You don't think that pass in the left
Lane was good enough for me to go?
Let's not get a shovel
and start digging up problems.
Let's just hit it
and see what happens. So...
Well,
there you go.
All you got to do
is do it one more time.
All we got to do
is do it all over again.
There you go.
All right.
Cool.
Let's do it.
I know Aaron's
playing it pretty cool,
but I'm pretty sure
he's sweating on the inside.
I mean, we all are. There's
a lot of uncertainty here.
I hate this part,
'cause I'm not in control.
I'm not in control.
All we can do is make the pass
and see what happens.
**
Let's do it.
**
Back in the shop,
Aaron was hoping
that the dart would run
this 1/8-mile stretch
in close to six seconds.
Of course,
who knows what will happen now?
Are we feeling good?
We like it?
**
The thing is, if we don't
cross the finish line first,
we won't just be humiliated
in front of this crowd
but also the millions of people
following on social media.
Oh, I got me all of it now.
This is it. Let's do it.
I don't even know
if gas monkey's reputation
could ever fully recover
from a hit like that.
How about you guys
we got out there?
You guys ready?
Roadkill! Roadkill! Roadkill!
Gas monkey!
Gas monkey! Gas monkey!
Come on.
Considering all the
hard work we put into this car
plus every other car
we've ever built,
this is gas monkey's
hard-earned reputation
laying right here on the line.
So, is this important?
You bet your sweet a*s it is.
Cars are ready.
You ready?
Yep.
All right.
Hey, we're ready.
All right.
Light it up, dude.
Here we go.
Let's go racing!
**
Each team will bring their car
up to the line.
Do it.
There we go.
Getting ready
to bring up the heat.
So, it's time to warm up
the tires, and of course,
I still didn't know
what the dart
was gonna be able to give me.
Charles asked me if I wanted
to lay off the king Kong burnout
and just take it easy
at the line.
I said, "you know, we didn't
come here to take it easy."
**
Yeah!
We're ready to race.
All right, roadkill.
What do you got?
Ladies and gentlemen,
put it together.
General mayhem!
So, I did the burnout.
That was all good.
Kind of
kept it short.
I wanted to go for the glory...
The full John force...
But I figured
that might be in bad taste
and also
overheat the tires.
Come on.
Let's do this.
You guys ready to race?
I can't hear you!
You guys ready to race?
I was like,
"ooh, we got a chance."
Gas monkey!
Ladies and gentlemen,
here we go.
Gas monkey.
General mayhem.
Ladies and gentlemen,
gas monkey garage!
Yeah!
Richard rawlings,
ladies and gentlemen.
And they brought the heat.
Good job.
Hell, yeah!
Yeah!
Holy
badass!
Yeah!
**
That's the team!
That's the guy!
I'm just
the money.
Holy.
Whoo! Badass!
Get you some of that,
cowboy.
That was awesome.
God,
that felt good.
Yeah,
we got our asses beat.
Yeah. No.
That was a whupping.
That was
a genuine whupping.
What?
Yeah!
You got
to be
that's awesome.
Get out of here!
You don't got
to rub it in.
Yeah, we do.
Aaron said to me
that was the quickest
that he had ever run
that car,
and that was the quickest
we'd ever run our car.
Across a freakin'
parking lot.
What did you do
to this thing?
It's not even
the same car.
Holy crap.
That was fast.
That was
rock 'n' roll.
That felt good.
I think I got out on you,
and you drove past me.
You think so?
Good,
little car.
Yep.
And you're both nuts.
I think we had
just a damn good ride,
and tell you
the truth,
I was taking a little nap
when the light changed.
I heard his motor pull
before I let go.
I didn't know
how far he had me.
It might have been milliseconds.
Heck, it might have been a whole second.
But we had the right combination
of transmission, the chassis.
I got topped into second gear,
and I couldn't see him.
I knew
he was behind me.
**
Yeah!
Ran him down, passed him.
To tell you the truth,
I locked the brakes up
trying to shut it down,
and I still
didn't see him. So...
It just goes to show you
how fast that car is.
When he left the line
a little bit late,
I was
really scared.
And when he passed,
I knew it was done.
There wasn't any way...
Nitrous, no Nitrous,
whatever the hell
they were gonna do,
that 3,600-pound pig
was not gonna catch it.
Yeah! Yeah!
I got
one of these.
I got no voice left.
Thanks for
a great race.
That was solid, man.
Unbelievable, man.
Aaron was told that
it couldn't have a powerglide
and we couldn't get
into the computer
because it just
wasn't possible.
So, they set you up, man.
They set you up for winning.
Yeah, well...
You tell Aaron he can't do
something, he's gonna do it.
Get you some of this.
Beer assistant!
Oh, yeah!
Here we go.
Don't leave me hanging.
For sure.
For sure.
Thank you. Aaron, thank you.
Word to the wise... keep your
mouth shut on the Internet.
Or don't lose.
Or that.
There's always that.
Kiki,
are you old enough to drink?
Okay. Diablo!
Heck, yeah!
So, we won!
Yes.
Couldn't be happier, man.
You want to challenge us,
we're gonna bring it.
Cheers, brother.
Gas monkey
pulled through.
This is kicking a*s
and taking names,
and I'm glad
the whole team was here.
All right, guys!
Thank y'all!
