Last time on "fast 'n' loud"...
Hey!
Really?
Hot-rod hunter Richard rawlings
and master mechanic
Aaron Kaufman
took on a mission
to turn a smashed-up fort gt..
Where's the rest of it?
It's laying over there.
...into a gas monkey-approved
supercar.
We can improve on the stance,
the brakes,
the wheels, the power.
You name it.
But when the gt wasn't
all it was cracked up to be...
But we've got
a crack in the frame rail
it's pretty substantial.
...and k.C. Decided
his sidekick days were over...
I would like
to move on down the line.
...Richard's $140,000 supercar
threatened to become
a super bust.
Did we find
the major disaster?
Yeah, and it's bad.
Now, with costs
going up, up, and away...
This is literally
freaking me out.
This is a lot
of dadgum money.
...and no buyer in sight...
I'm never scared.
Well, I'm a little scared
right now, actually.
...Richard is counting on
a new hero to save the day.
So, what's that worth?
Probably $35,000 to $40,000
appraised.
Wow!
Will Aaron and the monkeys
make it out of this mess?
I don't know if
we're missing a bin.
Will Richard's master plan
pay off?
at auction.
Or will the gt be
his final undoing?
Boom!
Saved the best for last.
Is that it?
This is gonna be
such a nightmare
to weld this thing, because the
mass is so big on this thing.
I'm gonna have to Pre-heat it,
and it's like,
"god, this is gonna"...
What a pain in the rear, man.
Once we weld this up,
I want y'all
to reassemble the front end.
All right, well,
it sounds like a plan.
Let's do it.
So, I snagged
this 2005 Ford gt for 140 grand.
Now, that's a lot of money
for a car that's wrecked.
Oh, my god.
But it's a supercar,
and they're super-rare,
and I think the market for them
is gonna go super-high.
If I'm right, then I got a car
that's worth
maybe half a million bucks.
If not, I'm just out
a big bundle of cash.
Man, you wrecked it
before you got it back?
Aaron convinced me that
we could up the horsepower,
paint it black,
and slam it with air ride.
Air ride?
Air ride.
What?!
I've never seen one
on air ride.
After making it gas monkey-cool,
I should be pocketing
a huge profit.
At least, that's my strategy
with these big-ticket cars.
You can't even
stick your finger under it.
It's an enormous risk, but
it should deliver a huge reward.
I gave Aaron three weeks
and 60,000 bucks
to finish the build.
Now, here's the game plan.
The busted nose
is pretty obvious,
but what we didn't know is
how deep those problems ran,
or if Aaron could get it
all straight again.
Whatever ran over this gt
put a few cracks in the frame
and left the front end
out of whack.
That ain't a good sign.
Then Jeremy and Keenan
went to work
getting the front end lined up
and all squared again.
Oh, my gosh, it's moving.
Moves easy?
And now I'm finishing up welding
all the cracks
in the cast aluminum frame.
It's a pain in the rear.
Is this the end of the world?
No. It just sucks.
Welding cast aluminum is tricky,
but not impossible.
Mostly,
it just takes a long time.
But after I get this finished,
we'll be able to find out
if the front end
is still c*ck or not.
I think I welded
which sounds like a lot.
A lot of it was in really,
really difficult places to weld.
But all that's done.
Okeydokey.
Now we're about to find out
if we got it right.
If it's not right,
there's no just moving on.
We'll have to find
plan "b," "c," or "z"
until we spend all of Richard's
money or we get it right.
Whichever one comes first.
Want to toss it up?
You want to put a single bolt in
just to see where it lays?
Yep.
Okay.
The proof in the pudding
is how well the subframe
slides onto
the freshly welded brackets.
We took the nose, the subframe,
and put it on.
And, incredibly,
it just slipped right on.
I am pretty happy
that that slid on like that.
That means they're
pretty well lined up.
I'm happy with the straightness
of the car.
It is not as good
as it once was,
but it's a lot better
than it used to be,
and it's definitely good enough
to get us on down the road
and through this build.
That's awesome.
It has a lot of weld,
a lot of gaps filled,
a lot of parts made.
We've done as much mockup
as we can do,
as much test-fit as we can do,
and we'd love to keep playing,
but it's time to get
this thing in paint.
The sooner we get it painted,
the sooner we can get it back,
and the sooner we can get it
put together.
One of the biggest things
we have to get out
in order to get it over to paint
is actually get the motor
and transmission out.
There's no real way
to lift the motor.
It doesn't have lift points,
and there's no bolts big enough
for me to run a chain on.
And so I decided
to just sling the motor.
Are you gonna put one of them
fancy boy scout knots in it?
Yeah, it's gonna be
something like that.
Is it less reliable
than a chain?
It might be,
but I'm sure it'll get us
through this job just fine.
Everything about this motor
is large.
It is big.
And there's the baby.
**
I got a lot of Jack
in this gt,
but last week we sold
two jaguars and the Mercedes.
They know me. I'm not keeping
that cash in my pocket.
I'm putting it
right back to work.
So, when I got wind of a deal
on a custom big-wheel bike,
I had to come check it out.
How you doing?
I'm Chris eder,
president of misfit industries
here in plano, Texas.
No, not the idiot
fired-up misfits.
I like these misfits.
Mike coy, my painter...
You know,
he's done some work for you,
and he was telling me that a
customer kind of ditched on a bike,
and you might be wanting
to get rid of it.
Yeah, a guy fell on hard times,
and we built a bike for him.
Wives, man.
Wives... that's what does it
every time.
Let me give you a...
Show it to me, man.
Wow!
Misfit industries is all about
super-super-high-end.
These bikes they build are
$100,000, $150,000.
All right,
so that's what Mike told me.
He said green and black.
I said, "well,
I got to go look at it."
Golly, dude.
This is the beast, man.
That is crazy cool.
It's your colors...
Gas monkey, for sure.
Holy cow.
I mean, it is wicked cool.
It's the right colors
for me, any ways.
It's slick. I mean, it's about
the best-looking bike
I think I've ever seen,
besides Fred.
It's a $100,000 bike.
Really?
I can't afford
a $100,000 bike.
That's a one-off front end
we did for it.
Full air suspension.
Lays on the ground.
Wow!
And that's a 30-inch
front wheel?
It's pretty rad.
Dang. That is just
freaking cool.
Basically,
the bike that's sitting there
is exactly the bike that
I would have them build for me
if I had 100,000 or
I can't pay $100,000
for a motorcycle,
but what's
your paying threshold?
What can you sell it for?
We'd need to get down...
About $75,000?
Of course,
there's a deposit.
We can come down a little bit.
Man, I don't know.
You know how Richard is.
We'll see where it goes.
You get one of the rings.
You got misfit rings?
Yeah.
Dang, man.
That's pretty wicked.
It's like a super bowl ring
or something.
How about $50,000?
I can't go $50,000.
I don't blame you.
I wouldn't go $50,000 either.
I just had to ask.
We can do $65,000.
Dang. You had to have
black and green, right?
I got a little bit
of a benefit on my side,
if you will.
I know he got a deposit
from the customer,
so he's already got some money.
How about 60 grand?
Deal.
All right, cool. Awesome.
I'll put the ring on now.
Right on.
So, you're gonna ride out
with me?
Yeah. Absolutely.
That's the only way we do it.
That's so badass, dude.
I'm fired up.
Okay, so, spending 60 grand
on a custom big-wheel bike
while I'm spending all the money
on the Ford gt
is probably not
the best idea in the world,
but at 60 grand,
this bike is a steal.
Anyways, I can always flip it
if I have to.
But for now, let's ride.
Wow!
How's it going in there,
Charles?
Freakin' dash is in here.
Lookit.
All I want to do
is get the cluster out.
Got to be
a rocket scientist
just to figure out how to take
this stuff apart in here.
Brutal.
Just brutal.
Apparently, this one bolt is
holding the whole car together.
It's almost comical...
The over-engineering
of every fastener on this car.
It was meant
to go 200,000.
Yeah.
Now that we
got the motor out,
we can finally strip down
the rest of the Ford gt
and get it prepped for paint.
Snap, crackle.
It's not a small task.
Richard and Aaron want to adios
the red for a nice black.
And there's a lot of red
inside this car.
So we got to pick the bones
of this thing clean.
You want me to put it
in its own box?
Yeah, that's fine.
Okay. Safer that way.
The pile just gets bigger
on the floor.
Dude,
you may fill up two tubs
just with
what's under that dash.
This is a precision machine,
and we have to be
pretty precise, ourselves,
as we take it apart.
Whatever you do, don't lose that
when you get it out.
Everything we bag and save
is something we don't
have to purchase again.
They didn't make
a ton of these cars,
so replacement parts
are Muy, Muy expensive,
not to mention very difficult
to acquire fast enough
to make our deadline.
I wouldn't want to know how much
this handle costs if I break it.
Don't break it.
It's the only one
in this part of the country.
No pressure.
No pressure.
Wow!
Holy cow, man!
I didn't expect
that we were gonna
tear this car
this far apart.
Hey, hey.
See all that red?
There is
a lot of red.
It's got to go away.
I agree. I just...
What are we doing
with all this on the floor?
'Cause this is freaking chaos
right here.
Well, this is kind of
our assembly layout.
Everything's bagged
and tagged.
We're
laying everything out
to make sure that we don't have
any damage beyond what we knew.
Checking the seals
and everything.
Checking hoses, brake lines.
Are we just gonna
leave it here?
I mean, I don't think packing
it up and putting it on a shelf,
like we did on these other cars,
is very smart.
That's a lot of margin of error
for losing stuff
that you can't go down
to O'Reilly's and get.
We got this totally.
Don't worry.
Don't let it
make you nervous.
We can handle it.
Oh, I'm past nervous.
This is literally
freaking me out.
I've seen a lot of cars
spread out in pieces all over
the gas monkey garage,
but I got to admit,
seeing my Ford gt spread out
in this many pieces
kind of made me a little queasy.
This is a lot
of dadgum money.
I thought
I was stressed out
when we used to build, like,
you know, regular stuff.
Now that we're
trying to up the game,
I'm starting to get
a little nervous.
I mean, at least with
the Ferrari, I had a partner.
I had Dennis.
He got all the money
in the world.
He can fix the problems.
This one's on me. Golly!
You know, you screw up on an old
Cadillac or impala or something,
you can fix that
for a few hundred bucks.
Screw up on this,
it might cost you 20 grand.
Getting heart palpitations.
I'm getting old.
Golly!
The thing is, when Aaron and the
guys get this car put back together,
it's gonna go super-fast,
and hopefully with me in it.
That means all the stuff
has to go in the right place,
in the right way,
or I might not live long enough
to sell it.
I'm expecting to get in this car
and do 230s, 250s.
Well, it'll be back
together, and it'll be right.
How fast you go,
that's up to you.
That's why you pay us
the big bucks, man.
Don't worry.
Do I pay y'all big bucks?
We got to work on that.
Let me tell you
this much.
We need to rope
this whole thing off
with, like,
crime-scene tape,
and anybody that gets caught
in there needs to get shot.
But y'all handle it.
Don't lose anything.
Hey, don't be scared.
I'm never scared.
Well, I'm a little scared
right now, actually.
Coming up
on "fast 'n' loud"...
...Richard makes plans
for a big win.
What happens if you wait
and they drop?
Looking for parts.
And the monkeys
lose their minds.
We're missing a bin.
Richard doesn't like that.
Hoo-Yah!
Be like Arnold.
Run!
Get to the chopper!
Ta-Da!
It's all yours.
Hey, Jason, give me a hand.
Mike wants to get this body
over to paint like right now.
You want
to carry it over?
That's how much
a supercar weighs.
A lot of money for a car
you can carry around.
I've painted a lot of cars,
but with k.C. Gone,
now I'm the head painter.
I wish they would hurry up.
Look at the cornering.
It's amazing.
One gt for sure.
Go, go, go, go, go, go!
Enjoy!
Black is not typically a color
that goes on this car.
And deleting the stripes...
That's gonna raise
a lot of eyebrows.
So I need to make sure that
it is perfect once it's done.
Let's tape it up.
So, the game plan on the gt
is to not see any red.
And we want to take everything
that's silver and factory,
and we're gonna make all that
black as well.
So we're gonna paint it all.
Do it like a baby bottle.
**
If you've watched our show
long enough, you already know
that black is one of the
hardest colors to paint a car.
Any flaws or imperfection are
almost impossible to hide.
I'm probably gonna spend
three days on painting the body.
And Aaron wants me
to paint the frame as well.
I got to squeeze all that in,
too?
No pressure.
It's only a $500,000 car.
**
Ask me how smart I am.
How smart are you?
$140,000
for that beat-up gt
yeah?
And then we got all the parts,
all everything else.
We're gonna have, I guess,
a little over $200,000 in it,
probably.
$220,000?
Yeah.
Okay, when I bought it, they
were selling for $250,000-Ish.
You know what the new
Forbes magazine says?
at auction.
That's stock? Just stock?
Stock car.
Well, ours is a lot better
than that,
so automatically
your car is worth more.
Exactly.
Yep.
So, when I started
this gt build,
my idea was
to sell it like usual.
But now I read an article
in Forbes magazine
that says the price of these
things are going through the roof.
Every day, they go up,
they go up, they go up.
I find myself wondering,
if I hold it,
I wait till after
this next auction season,
and these cars go up
another 100 grand,
we might have a $600,000,
$700,000 car on our hands.
What happens if you wait
till after this auction,
and they drop?
And that's the gamble.
If they go down in price, well,
then Richard loses money,
and that's no Bueno.
But, damn it,
I'm gonna roll the gt dice
and take this one
to the next big auction.
We're not selling this one
just yet.
Actually,
this might be a good idea.
No deadline.
No, that does not mean that.
We still have a deadline.
We still have a budget.
And you guys
get back to work.
Heard that before.
Read the article.
Learn something.
You heard it here
first, car fans.
I'm wagering that
the gt skyrockets in value
and that I can make money
in an auction.
Is it a sure thing? No.
But I'll tell you
what is a sure thing.
It's time for a beer.
Beer assistant?
Dude, you're gonna get faster,
or you're gonna get fired.
Everybody's a comedian.
**
You never know
what you're gonna find
on one of these trucks,
you know?
All kinds of surprises.
The truck showed up today
with a couple of cars
Richard bought earlier this year
at Barrett-Jackson.
He pulled two
out of cold storage
'cause he's got a couple
of hot leads on them.
I figured out
the mystery finally.
That's why
we're going broke.
First, there's a guy coming to
look at the '72 gtx road runner.
So, Richard tells me
at the auction.
He says,
"hey, man, I bought a gtx."
"All right, man.
I like gtxs.
So, where's your car at?"
He goes, "this is it."
I was thoroughly confused.
I didn't know
they built them this ugly.
This looks good. If you want,
just pull in right here.
It's a squirrely,
butterscotch sort of color,
and Richard paid 42 grand
for it.
Without hesitation,
I'd say that's too much.
I know why Richard
doesn't have any money.
It's 'cause half the staff
is out here
watching another company
unload cars.
Got a museum back east
that wants the other car.
It's a 1965 Shelby cobra.
It was used as a prop
in the "iron man" movie.
That's that
"iron man" car, dude.
No way.
Robert downey Jr.,
learning to fly, crashed out.
Should I buy it?
What do you think,
iron man?
Whoa, whoa, whoa, guys.
We don't want
to damage it.
Richard got it at auction
for $22,000.
Now, it's just a shell.
It's not running and driving,
but it is kind of cool
being a piece of movie history.
There we go.
Close enough.
Is that it?
That's about right.
I thought iron man
was bigger than that.
Hey, y'all.
Chassis' ready.
Aaron's all anxious to get
the assembly going on the gt
so I got it all m*rder*d out
and blacker than Texas tea.
I think Mike's afraid
for us to touch it.
This thing is slick.
So that keke and I can get back
to painting
the rest of the panels,
I'm handing the frame back
to the mechanic monkeys.
You get us all the stuff
we took out of the dash?
You about to put
the dash on?
Yes.
It's tricky
to do the final assembly.
The car's this big, and
there's so many parts in there.
This is a supercar.
It's capable of being driven
at 200 miles an hour or more.
There's no room for error.
Every nut and bolt on this thing
has to be right.
That dash went in a million
times easier than it came out,
I promise you.
Every part on this car
is more expensive.
So if we lose something
or if we misplace something
or something gets mis-labeled,
we have to go and re-order
and spend a lot more money.
And we all know that
Richard doesn't like that.
I'm looking for... there's some
short, like, 8-millimeter bolts
for the computer,
for the airbag computer.
Without them,
we won't be able to complete
the work on the dash.
And so it begins.
Looking for parts.
Richard told us
to keep an eye on all the parts.
Even the bolts are worth
hundreds of dollars.
Did y'all
look in here already?
If I can't find them,
he's gonna have me put this car
together with my nuts.
These are what it looks...
The bolts look like.
That's the front end.
Oh, okay.
Nope. That's not them.
I remember taking them out,
and I thought I put them
in that one bin.
I remember taking them out,
but I don't know
if we're missing a bin.
I'm dead meat.
I think we really lost
these things.
Hey, Charles. I found a drawer
labeled "computer mount."
That the ones you want?
Maybe.
Hey, well, that's okay.
It's just an hour out of our day
that we'll never get back.
Coming up
on "fast 'n' loud"...
Saved the best for last.
Richard's
holding out for a hero.
How much is this car?
$75,000.
Eep!
But will "gt" spell doom
for the monkeys?
No likey?
Man, do I have the coolest
thing in this car.
Looks like
a whipple blower.
Well, break it out of that box,
see what it looks like.
It's the right color.
Oh, this is where it's at,
that's for sure.
I couldn't be more stoked
about it.
With all the cars
going back together,
I've got my hands full
working on a few upgrades
for the gt power plant.
I'm replacing the cams
with high-performance ones
that'll produce more horsepower
at higher rpm.
Finish this old cam swap.
And then we're
replacing the blower
with a bigger, more efficient
four-liter whipple
to squeeze out
even more horsepower.
It's all there.
Since Richard
reads Forbes magazine
and has decided to gamble
by hanging onto the gt
until auction,
I'm not all that worried
about his deadline.
What I am concerned about
is making good on my promise.
Cool.
Awesome.
When this build started,
rather than just fixing it,
I sold trip on the idea
of spending a lot of his money
turning this gt
into a super-duper car.
Now, I have no doubt
this car will be cool,
but if we don't get the bump in
performance that I sold him on,
Richard won't get his margin,
and, maybe worse,
next time I say "trust me,"
he won't.
You're good.
Here we go.
I'm good on my side.
I don't know
what y'all are working with.
Jason, will you watch?
Yeah.
Absolutely.
Your hand will grow back.
Coming down nice and slow.
We got about 3 inches that
I'm gonna need to go forward.
Come on.
I'm getting close
to landing them on...
Yeah, we're real close
over here, too.
I'm touching right there.
Let's hold for a second.
And we're on our way
to assembling the car.
We finally got the heart
back in the beast.
There we go.
You good?
All right.
Motor's in.
Blower looks great.
It's gonna make a heck of a lot
more horsepower,
if you're curious how much.
We've got most of the car
put together already.
I'm very happy
with the progress.
It seems to be moving along
quite quickly,
which can be a bit scary,
because any time
anything works this well,
we're bound to have
a massive problem.
* three guys and a tiny car *
four.
Charles down here, too.
Oh, Charles. What y'all
doing down there together?
Trying to put together
a 200-mile-an-hour car.
Yes.
Love me some Indiana.
**
So, today I'm
in elkhart, Indiana.
Reason I came up is, a few days
ago, I got a call from the guys
that have hall of heroes
comic book and superhero museum,
and the reason they called me
is 'cause they saw
that I bought the iron man cobra
from Barrett-Jackson.
They're gonna be
buying the car,
so I went ahead
and shipped it out to them.
Now we just got to hammer out
the deal.
This one's
a little different.
Turns out, he said he has
like five or six shelbys
sitting around in his garage,
and I'm like, "maybe we do
some horse trading."
Richard rawlings.
Allen Stewart.
Nice to meet you.
Allen.
Cool. It looks like
the car got here all right.
It was perfect when it left.
What'd y'all do to it?
No, no, we didn't do that.
So, this is
the hall of heroes.
This is it, man.
We are the only comic book and
superhero museum in the world,
and we cover the whole
in comics, toys, film,
and animation.
The iron man car
crosses genres...
Superhero and car-related
at the same time...
And Shelby cobra and being
in an "iron man" movie,
it is a perfect fit
for the hall of heroes.
Well,
you checked out that.
Let's check out
your collection.
Then maybe
we can make a deal.
This is the actual shield
used by Chris Evans
in the first
"captain america" film.
So what's that worth?
Probably $35,000 to $40,000,
appraised.
Wow!
Yeah.
It's a $500,000 comic book.
What?!
Yep.
Came out in 1941,
first appearance of captain
america punching out Hitler.
It's the most famous comic book
of world w*r ii.
- No kidding.
- I've met people
that collect salt and pepper
shakers and thimbles and spoons.
Check this out... Adam west's
personal Batman costume.
Everybody's got
a different trigger.
Mine happens to be cars.
These guys happen to be into
the comic books and superheroes.
Not my thing, but there's a lot
of money to be made there.
But anyways, now it's time
to get down to brass tacks
and go look at the other cars.
Let's see if we can do
some swapping.
Shelby door number one.
That's too new for me.
Okay, next door.
Rad,
but it's still too new.
Anything cool, or just a crazy
coupe with some flames on it?
That's a crazy coupe
with some flames, yep.
What else?
Saved the best for last.
Yeah, it's a '66
Shelby mustang gt350.
Got the original motor
in it?
No, it's actually
a fuel-injected 302.
What?!
From a '90s mustang.
Who does that
to a mustang?
Well, the original engine
grenaded itself
back in the '70s.
I don't know.
The old one's just my style.
I keep them original.
How much is this car?
Probably couldn't let it go
for less than $75,000.
I can't do that,
not with the motor swap
and all that
kind of stuff,
'cause I'd want
to go back original.
I mean, I was
pretty horned up for the car
until he was telling me
that it had been changed over.
So, these are all simple things
that can be put back into play
and make this
a true '66 gt350 car.
But he was right on the money
on what it was worth,
and I'm here to make money,
not just kind of push it,
you know,
laterally across the table.
It's funny you mention 75 grand,
though,
'cause that's kind of what I'm
thinking I want on the Shelby.
Oh, the iron man cobra?
Yes.
Man, it's...
What about...
A mustang and 10 grand?
That mustang?
Which mustang do you like?
This one I like, but it would be
too much work to put it back,
and the other ones
just don't work for me.
Let's just do a straight-up deal
on the iron man cobra.
I can't hide
that I paid 22 grand for it.
I mean,
it has been on television.
This is the real deal.
You're buying movie history
right here.
I can't believe this.
Sold! $22,000.
So you want $75,000
or the cobra?
I think it's worth it.
I mean, I think I was in the
right place at the right time.
I got a good deal, so you can't
beat yourself up over that,
but, I mean,
especially for you guys.
The hall of heroes,
it's out there.
I think it'll generate
some income for you.
You can charge people 10 bucks
or so to take a picture,
and things like that, so...
It's definitely worth it.
So that's a deal?
That's a deal.
Shake the man's hand.
All right. Awesome.
All in all, you know,
$75,000 is a lot for the car,
but, you know,
I think it's worth it.
What do you think?
I'm the one
who spent the money.
What are you, like,
hem-hawing about?
k*ller.
Well, I got my 75 grand.
It's time for me
to get back to Dallas.
That's about 50 grand
in profit.
Who says I can't make money
at an auction?
Anyway, I'm gonna need
every cent for the gt build.
Hey, Charles, help me
eyeball these lines up here.
What do you think?
That one need to be
under that upper bar?
This one's lower.
This one's right here.
Yeah,
I can see it right here.
So it's good there.
All right.
Such an idiot.
We're on our way
to final-final assembly,
and now with the motor in,
we can turn our attention
to the hundreds of parts
and systems
that will ultimately make
this gt a supercar again.
We good?
That is one mean ride.
What if you had
to get into this thing?
Of course never
leave well enough alone,
some of my upgrades
need some finessing
to complement the original
precision of Ford engineering.
For instance, the tank
for the air ride system,
it needs a home.
We've got the accuair valve, and
it mounts onto here like this,
so hopefully I can use the space
that the old big muffler set.
Since we don't
have that anymore,
I should be able to put
all of this in that location.
I think it's gonna be
really nice.
The new supercharger
sucks so much air,
the original intake tube
is in danger of failing,
hence another upgrade
to a carbon-fiber model.
Reason for putting this on
is so that we don't squish
or flatten out
or have a reduction inability to
move air with the rubber ones.
"Hello, guys.
I'm going to fail
at the most inopportune time."
Coming up
on "fast n' loud"...
A buyer puts the squeeze
on christie and Tony.
We're getting fired
at $28,000.
Turn the key on.
And the pressure builds
to finish the gt
ri-Ki-Ki-Ki-Ki-boom!
The answer when we come back.
The answer is "d."
Decades after the gt40
raced at le mans,
Ford reintroduced the model
as a consumer-level street car
under the code name Petunia.
I'm grocery shopping.
Richard thinks
he can get more for this gt
if he holds onto it
for a big auction.
Well, he's not going anywhere
with it
until we get
all these body parts back on.
Now, remember,
Richard wanted to save a buck
by not spending the $9,000
or $10,000 or whatever
on a new hood and Fender.
There we go.
Come up, up, up.
Yeah.
So Mike and Keenan did their
best with the original ones.
Well, we're about to find out
if their best is good enough.
Break it.
This is scary-looking.
I mean, this does not fit,
either.
Before anyone
does anything rash,
let's make
the front of the car fit.
I agree.
It isn't much of a supercar
when the gaps are all messed up
and the hood's
not closing right.
It's always some
so, when you go about
taking parts off
and putting them back on,
tweaking where
they're bolted together,
one thing moves, something else
is gonna move with it.
Far as it will go.
Lift that side.
Now lift up.
That one does
some weird
yeah, your hinge
is all over the place.
To be honest, this has got me
a little bit worried.
If it's a frame issue,
we're gonna be s.O.L.
And Richard?
He's gonna be "s" 'd
out of a lot of money.
So before we start blaming
Aaron's welding
and going and looking
for new jobs,
we're gonna try every other
trick in the book.
Hey, you know what?
Put the pumps on it.
Where are those at?
The shocks?
Yeah.
We put the shocks on to
dampen the movement in the hinge
when you close the hood,
and everything else
just kind of fell in place.
Shut it.
Will it shut?
It don't rub going down now
with that shock on there.
'Cause that helps
push up on it
so it doesn't do that.
Good idea for once.
You hear that?
He said good idea, for me.
I was high-fiving you,
but you missed.
That was ridiculous.
He's a Teddy bear.
Tony's out here
wiping down the car.
He said you were coming in.
All right.
While Richard's
out of town in Indiana
trying to sell the iron man car,
or whatever it is,
I was contacted by a potential
buyer for the '72 gtx.
So I guess this leaves
the negotiating up to us.
Oh, my gosh.
I need a new job.
Steve?
Yeah.
Hi. Tony Taylor.
Steve Nicholas.
Hey, I appreciate you
coming down, man.
You bet.
Today I drove 5 1/2 hours
to come to gas monkey
to check out a '71 gtx.
It's a low-production,
it's rare,
it has all the earmarks
of being a good collector car.
It's a good-looking car.
Interior, you know,
is real clean on it,
paint's real well-done.
It was repainted,
so someone put a lot of time,
a lot of effort
in keeping it up.
And it's a 101 car,
so it's the only one like it
ever built in this combination,
this color, these options.
All right.
Got the little "beep beep" horn
in it, so it's... I like it.
It's a neat car.
At $42,000,
I think Richard knows
he paid way too much
for this car,
but I'm gonna throw
a high number at this guy
and see what happens.
Listed at like $52,000.
I'd like to get that.
I kind of know
what the market is,
but, I mean,
what are you thinking?
I'm not thinking
that high.
You're thinking higher?
A little bit. No.
Little bit higher?
No, I'm thinking
more like $28,000.
Thousand?
Yes.
Oh, no.
I mean,
we got a lot in this car.
We're getting fired
at $28,000.
And it's probably me,
'cause you do this
more often than I do.
So, dude split our asking price
in half.
It's just wrong.
Yeah.
How about I come up to...
$34,000?
No, I mean...
Richard will k*ll you.
Yeah, I can't do that.
$40,000 even?
$36,000.
I came down $9,000,
you went up $2,000?
Yes.
That's Oklahoma math.
God dang.
I've had a lot of people call
on this car, but...
Yeah, but none of them
are standing here.
You're standing here.
Bottom line...
Like,
what's the lowest number?
Dude, $37,500.
I can't do any better
than that... $37,500.
I'll take it.
Really?
Yeah.
All right, cool.
I was hoping to at least get
his money back out of this,
but I unloaded it,
and hopefully he'll be happy
we opened up
some space in the shop.
"Happy"?
Yeah, he doesn't do happy,
does he?
No, not at all.
Steve,
you bought a hell of a car.
That's a great car, man.
I know. Love it.
And we're getting fired
over it.
Eh. I'm sad.
He doesn't look
very sad.
No.
Try to be gentle.
Step on it, guys.
I was hoping to get out of here
early today.
All right.
We got everything.
Power steering.
Cool.
You did the rear-end fluid?
Rear-end fluid.
I put 10 out of 12 quarts
of oil.
We're ready to go.
Just waiting on a.K. Now.
Yes.
Aaron!
Aaron!
So, we're nearing the end
of the gt project.
Today's a big day.
We really think that today
we're gonna be able to fire it.
All right, guys,
you know the drill.
We're gonna cold-crank
this thing first.
Of course,
this is the original motor.
But since we took it apart
to change the cams
and add the bigger blower,
we're gonna take it slow
and just cold-crank it.
No spark,
just turn the motor over
and see
if we have oil pressure.
Ready?
Yeah.
That's not good.
Is there a computer
in this?
Computer's in it.
Hold on, hold on, hold on.
Sometimes the simplest answer
is the most correct one.
Oh, you unplugged it, right?
Yeah.
When something doesn't work,
guess what?
Yeah, plug it in.
Yeah.
Have at it.
We just want to make sure
that whenever we fire the motor
that it's gonna have
oil pressure.
If it doesn't,
that's catastrophic, that's bad.
I should be
seeing some movement
on the oil-pressure Gauge now,
right?
What are you making?
Nothing
Crank it again.
Nothing.
Well, that's unfortunate.
It comes down to this.
Either the motor's not
making oil pressure,
or we have a faulty Gauge.
We've checked everything else.
Charles wired up
a different Gauge,
one we know we can trust.
We know that works.
If it's not just a bad Gauge
and it ends up
being a motor problem,
it's bad, super-bad.
Like, the engine's not
building oil pressure.
That means
it's never gonna run.
We got to pull it back apart.
If we don't see pressure
this time, we're screwed.
Ooh, lookit there.
We got pressure.
We just needed
to replace the Gauge.
Now that we've got
proper oil pressure,
there's nothing stopping us
from making this kitten purr.
Now nothing's disconnected,
right?
No, nothing.
We're ready to go.
All right.
Ri-Ki-Ki-Ki-Ki-boom!
Just kidding.
I'm just kidding.
Turn the key on.
Hit it.
I'm watching
the oil-pressure Gauge.
Oh, I'm nervous.
Should we be behind safety glass
or something?
I know, I'm watching
for electrical fires.
Go ahead and hit it.
Could be
running out of battery.
You got it.
You're good.
Let it out.
It's growling like
the big cat we all know it is.
It's not that loud.
It's got no load on it.
The car's idling on its own,
which is really, really nice.
Especially changing the cams,
bigger blower,
modified fuel system.
So we're really, really happy.
So, right now, we're
basically just gonna let it run
and let it warm up,
see if the fans come on.
If everything
is working correctly,
we need to kick it into
overdrive, get this thing done,
get the car put together
so we can get the dyno.
If I had more hands,
I'd give you more thumbs up.
I've only got two.
Coming up
on "fast n' loud"...
The gt gets its big reveal
at the track...
Dude,
you're not driving. I am.
You want to settle it
the usual way?
...and Richard and Aaron
go head to head.
- You know what I always say...
- When opportunity knocks,
you offer whoever's at the door
a cold one.
And that's why we're here
at dfw airport, terminal d.
We're opening up
a gas monkey bar n' grill
right here in the airport.
I can't believe that all this
is just wrap stuff.
The guys from 44 build and
Tommy from 360 worked overnight
to transfer this thing
into what you see now.
They did a great job.
I know they're tired,
and I think I'm probably
gonna have to buy them
a beer and a quesadilla,
but I can swing it.
Beer assistant!
Beer assistant!
Look at that.
Wow, look at that.
Never thought
I'd be serving y'all beer.
Boom.
Overnight.
It went from being
one restaurant
to being gas monkey
bar n' grill.
Although I've got a lot of money
tied up in the Ford gt,
when I heard there was
an opportunity at dfw,
I had to jump.
I like it a lot, man.
And I like the fact
that it's crowded
and there's a lot of people
in here.
Wake me up
when he's done talking.
Seriously.
I mean, overnight.
Completely turned around.
Closed after dinner,
open for breakfast. Good job.
The white zone is
for loading and unloading only.
If you need to load or unload,
go to the white zone.
**
- The home of champions...
- Circuit of the Americas.
Auto racing's
premiere destination,
where legends come to win.
This is where action happens.
This is where dreams are made.
This is where true champions
come to do battle.
So, where are the keys at?
Dude,
you're not driving. I am.
You want to settle it
the usual way?
If you've got the thumb
for it.
I declare a thumb w*r.
I think my thumb's just
actually longer than yours.
**
So here you go... our 2005 Ford
gt done, gas monkey-style.
The gmgt.
VROOM, VROOM, VROOM.
What better way to show off
our Ford gt at first
than to bring it to
the best track in america,
the circuit of the Americas
down in Austin, Texas,
home of the champions.
This the f1 track,
the only one in america,
and this is the first car
that we've built
that we feel
really deserves to be
on a hard-core,
real-deal race track.
It's always been a big goal of
mine to get here, to drive here,
so I couldn't be
more excited
to put our super...
Well, super-duper... car
on this super track.
Now, that wasn't the original
idea when I got started.
Basically, I found
a 2005 Rex Ford gt
with the whole front end
smashed off.
I figured we'd fix it,
paint it back red,
and sell it and make 20%, 40%
on our money.
But, in typical Aaron style,
he talked me out of it,
and I'm glad he did, because
this is one badass Ford gt.
They were called the gt-40
because of the 40-inch
roof height.
Well, we bested them.
This one's a gt-38.
And we were able to get
that low roof line
with our air ride technology
shockwaves.
I don't mean
a set off the shelf.
We actually checked the spring
rates on the factory coilovers,
and the valving on the shocks
so that we actually had a setup
that was complementary to the
speed this thing's capable of.
And when it came time to control
the air ride on our super-car,
we needed a super-system,
so we turned to accuair.
We're able to monitor
all four corners
and adjust them
all on its own,
and this is a big advantage,
because, in this car,
all of our attention's gonna be
driving the vehicle,
not operating the air ride.
You want
to carry it over?
Aaron wanted to change
the car's paint color,
and I just wanted to go back
with the red and white stripes
and try to make
some profit.
He's like, "well,
you want to be cool or not?"
So we ended up changing
our color to black.
We took this car
all the way down...
Every bolt, every screw,
every nut,
and then
all the way back up.
And that's
pretty dadgum amazing.
We put a four-liter
whipple blower on top of it,
put in bigger cams
and portal exhaust,
so we definitely
made more power
to the tune
of about 800 horsepower.
I thought the factory wheels
were a little small,
and they wouldn't contain
the front brakes,
so we called hre and had them
whip up a set of 20 and 21s out back
with some big pirelli rubber
on them.
I'm sure all you purists
are out there going,
"oh, my gosh.
Look what they did to that car.
They ruined it."
You know, "it's no good.
It's junk now.
We don't want anything
to do with it."
Well, you got to realize
two things...
One, everything that we did
is bolt-on, correct?
Yeah.
And, two, all we did was
change it to a cooler color
because the red ones...
Well, let's just face it.
They're red ones.
And a thing to remember is...
It was wrecked.
That's right.
And it was already wrecked,
anyway, so who cares?
**
That's it.
put back together
by Aaron and the crews
with the gas monkey touches,
and ended up
with a gmgt 2015-style.
Yo, it might have been a little more
work than Richard was expecting,
but it turned out
exactly the way I want it.
Get you some of that.
Holy cow.
Richard's wallet
took a big hit
when he picked up
a wrecked 2005 Ford gt,
but his composure
started to crack
when new body panels,
an all-new paint job and wheels,
and big engine
and suspension upgrades
put an even bigger dent
in his piggy bank.
Until he really
went for broke...
- Boom.
- ...Scoring a bargain
on a big-wheel motorcycle.
He also paid a pretty penny
for a barn full of Primo camaros
and parts...
How about 150 grand?
...before turning
an even prettier profit
without even pulling off
the premises.
Then Richard hit the trifecta
with a Pre-w*r Mercedes
and a pricy pair of classic jags
he's had on hold.
By selling the classic-car combo
for a tidy profit.
But a rusty red roadrunner
ran away
with some of Richie's riches.
That's Oklahoma math.
Until a high-priced hero...
Is that it?
...arrived to save the day.
With Richard's decision
to hold onto this black beauty
for auction,
he'll need
nearly 172,000 smackers
to get back in the green.
Well, there's the story.
and left abandoned.
We bought it for 140 grand,
and Aaron and the guys talked me
into turning it into this...
The gmgt.
Now, where I got lucky... these
cars have shot up in value,
so I think I might just hold
onto this one for a little bit.
Auction season's
coming up.
The prices are going up,
you know, quite drastically.
As a matter of fact, one just
sold for over 500 grand.
I feel like this car's easily
worth $350,000 to $400,000,
and we're in it
for about 200 grand,
so let's show the car off
a little bit
and then
let's see what happens,
because we might be able
to make a hell of a lot
of profit on this car.
And then that would be
super-duper.
