there it is it's nice very nice the
Nissan 300 ZX this car has 50 extra

horsepower that aren't welcome in
California deal but that's not gonna

stop us yes strong it performs great
but there's a massive issue with it

small small oh sacrifices will have to
be made so make an out-of-state car

saleable in California
correct hardly any fun at all.

well the Sun has risen on the state of
Oregon I've had my early morning cup of

coffee and I'm on the road to go and
see a car that actually comes from the

land of the rising Sun it is a true
Japanese legend it is of course the

Nissan 300 ZX twin-turbo now we
know the car as the Nissan 300 ZX but any

Japanese enthusiasts out there will know
it by its chassis number which is the Z

32 notice I'm saying Z instead of Z
because that's the way I say it the.

90s was a fantastic time for Japanese
sports cars you had the Toyota Supra the

Honda NSX and the Nissan Skyline all
of those free cars are awesome and now

that market well it's just gone
boom everyone wants to get in on that

Japanese domestic market or otherwise
known as the JDM and that's where I

can get in on this 300 ZX if it's
a decent car like it looks in the

pictures and I spoke to the owner
Richard and he says it's a very nice

car and there could be
a profit in it for me and

Anne there it is not bad
is it hey I like the wheels.

hello hey Mike you must be Richard I
am Richard nice to meet you great to meet

you and you sir yeah thank you for
giving up the time it showed me your

cracking little car so what
modifications have you done to it in

the time that you've owned it the
wheels absolutely those are the LM GT4.

forged racing wheels and it just
complements the car so well usually

when I come and see cars like this I
see aftermarket wheels on them and I

think I'm gonna have to put them
back to stock but actually I kind of like

the wheels on this look at the size
of those bad boys if you've got drain

pipes on your house are they missing
because I think they're hanging on

the back of this car oh look at those
seats those seats are really nasty but.

what you'll notice is underneath
the original seats are pristine seriously

yep I hope so oh look at that
now I like the covers the covers are

fantastic aren't they and I'm so
pleased they're there that's fantastic

okay inside then so we got original
seats got the original dash at the

steering wheels a little bit beaten up
the lever on the steering wheel whoa

and there it is look at that that is
fantastic huge big power plant it's.

just been squeezed in a 3 litre v6 24
valve absolutely brilliant do you mind

firing it up for me so I can have a
listen absolutely it's nice it's very

nice let's hope it sounds
good a little squeak

coming from a belt but
now that's evened up.

yeah.

smooth sounds really nice doesn't
it really but there's a little bit of a

squeak on start-up is it always been
doing that it comes on from time to.

time but it's more noticeable in
the winter time I think just a couple of

things the speedometer sometimes
cuts out as does the power steering so I

want you to be aware that it might
be a little bit heavy when you drive it

okay I'm gonna take Richards advice and
be careful because remember I've got two

turbos a v6 engine twin cams 350
horsepower I've got a nice straight bit

of road but I need to know what it
goes like oh yes it's quick now that's

dangerous because rear of the car is
starting to break away the rear one to

overtake the front obviously this car's
got very very slim tires on it and the

slim tires aren't adding to the ride
quality the exhaust they scream bother

boy oh that's a load of car is it
just bottomed out on the ground.

the speedo as Richard said now
isn't working so I can't tell how fast I'm

going so let's just keep the speed
low oh yeah I've lost air in let me

just pull over nice and carefully for
one second oh god that's made the

steering really stiff it's come back
it's loaded sensors that tell the car

what's going on and when it does
that that might be the high-cast system

telling the car that there's a fault
and it goes into limp mode warning you

to pull over to to be safe between
1990 and 1996 they made 90,300 zx's but

they only made 18,000 of these
the top of the range twin turbo models

so that makes this car kind of
salt after and a little bit rare this car

I think for the money thirteen and
a half thousand dollars that's not too

bad where it is but with all the work
that needs doing I think it needs to be

at least a grand cheaper so how was
it Mike do you know what it drives really

quick doesn't it you can really
feel that extra horsepower to 350

horsepower the suspension is really
tough isn't it I mean you've lowered it

down and it feels faulty but it it
really does rattle you down the road

for the money you're asking you want
thirteen thousand five hundred dollars

yes I think a more realistic price for
this car would be twelve thousand five

hundred dollars these wheels
alone they're rare they'll sell for $2,000

really Wow they will so I would
have to counter offer with thirteen

thousand twelve thousand eight hundred
dollars I'd have a deal now deal yes

top work I just bought myself a Nissan
300 zx not Z ZX that's correct in all

honesty when thinking of who's gonna
buy this car is basically the guy I've

just met but now he
lives in California and

that's where the challenge
lies well for antlays.

yes yes yes yes Mikey yes I know
you like it yeah this is a proper car yeah

this is a proper car this is a 91
it's a z32 not the 31 as well so it's.

baby yes perfect no no no no I want to
show you a couple of things first number

one is open the door look at this
party drink I can get out with the

seat belt still on how weird is that
and you're probably thinking pointless.

what's the point I'm thinking what's
the point but it's just a nice little

thing in fact I was so pleased with
this mechanism Nissan that they

guaranteed their seat belts for life I
noticed these massive exhausts on the

back yeah I could probably put a
football down the back of those and

actually this is something that we can
build on we can we can kind of run with

this theme and then when we're finished
we can't say that because we're not gonna

do any of that stuff no no come take
a seat inside sit on the nice no take it

off the seat belt go and press about
me no no I want to pull the door in I

know it's quite good isn't it look
at that party trick right first of all

the seat covers they are just nasty
seat covers underneath our pristine

seats and there are a couple of
nice little things for you to do with this

car you switch the ignition on you're
gonna see a red light there on the

right-hand side of dashboard says
high-cas right now high-cas is the

system that runs a lot of the
operations in this car these speedos not

working and a power steering is
coming and going oh that's worrying so the

high-cas system needs a little bit
of a look to how's it drive it drives

like you cannot believe is ridiculous
how I've still got a driver's license I.

don't know engine is brilliant it's
strong it performs great but there's a

massive issue with it I bought this car
in the state of Oregon and we reside in

the state of California smog smog so
we're talking catalytic converters PCV

yeah you're gonna have to go to
work on this to get it through one of

those emissions tests and it opens
up the market for me to be able to sell

it so make an out-of-state car
saleable in California correct can I

drive it before we go in no you
can't how come I never get to drive it.

twin-turbo it's very fast and you all
lose your license and that won't help

yeah but what if I'm really really
extra careful can I drive it then but

then there's no fun being extra
careful you want it out of a racetrack

you really want to go for it you know
in the 90s the 300 ZX was voted in.

car and drivers top 10 cars of the
year seven years in a row I mean think

about it that speaks volumes doesn't
it and our car is a car of the 90s see

this is the later Z 32 it followed the
80s car the Z 31 and if I'm honest I.

think I prefer this car I just think
it's a better-looking vehicle now Mike.

he's tasked me to refit in the
original Nissan factory emissions

equipment he says it's going to
increase value because if we fit it we

can sell the car here in the state
of California so what I've done is I've

got my head around smog that means
I need to sort out PCV valves airbox

catalytic converters injectors and this
this is part of the EGR system although

it looks small it's actually brought me
big problems because to be able to fit

this I've had to take loads of stuff
off the car for example that's a remove

the exhaust the coil packs the fuel
regulators loads and loads of hoses the

fans had to come off the radiators
had to come out with the shroud the

coolant hoses the inlet manifold
underneath the car had to get rid of.

the heat shield the prop shaft even
the anti-roll bars had to come off and I've

had to get rid of the wheels the tie
rods the subframe the gearbox mount in

fact there's so much other bits that
have to come off all because Mike had

this idea he wants to increase the
value when it comes time to sell and

here's the kicker this is the bit
that's caused me the biggest problem.

because this little part here is
mounted at the rear of the engine and

it's really close to the firewall it's
actually quite snug in there and there

is only physically one way that I
can get this into the car and that is.

unfortunately to take the engine out
because this is fitted right there yeah.

now frustratingly it only takes
about 30 seconds to fit two bolts but of

course that's only possible on the
back of an entire day in the workshop to

get to this stage now I have seen
people try and attempt this in the

engine bay where they detach the
gearbox push the engine forward wiggle

it around but ultimately this is the
professional way to do it get it out

put it on a workbench and when
you consider all the other bits I've got.

to do I've now got free and
clean access to the entire unit.

Mike's brought back to the workshop
a Nissan 300 ZX this is a proper car

with loads of aftermarket kits which
I need to replace so we can legally

smog and sell it in California yeah
you're gonna have to go to work on

this to get it through one of those
emissions tests I reckon we'll lose about

50 horsepower but what we lose in
performance he thinks we're gonna make

up in potential buyers for now I need
to crack on with reinstating the EGR

system this part here is actually a
valve and it's an important part of

the EGR system the exhaust gas
recirculation what happens is the

valve opens and it allows a small
amount of those exhaust gases to go back

into the system and via two pipes
which haven't fitted yet and put back into

the intake that extra bit of exhaust
gas actually dilutes the fuel air

charge what that means the engine
now burns less hot and what that means it

now produces less nitrogen oxide and
that is the system completed far easier.

outside the engine bay I might
seem really obvious but one of the

biggest influences on emissions is of
course the exhaust it's the part of the.

car that takes the gases from the
engine and deposits them safely out the

back now our car should have four
catalytic converters two of them are

fitted at the rear of the car but two of
them are fitted to the engine one here

and one there if you didn't have
to register this car in California all

this aftermarket stuff makes sense you
get loads of extra horsepower but even.

out the box these are amazing cars to
drive these are aftermarket pipes that.

I'm removing are actually fitted with
this extra smaller pipe that directs a

flow of air directly away from the
wastegate now I know some people that

decide to cut this off weld up
this section but leave that smaller.

pipe exposed that way when they
floor it get to maximum boost the turbo

screams out really loud that isn't
exactly the look that Mike and I are

going for and also crucially these
pipes aren't fitted with cats and this

aftermarket pipe is gonna get swapped
for this catalytic converter in fact

while it's off it's the first chance
you get to see the honeycomb inside

that's the cat itself cats work by
converting the incoming gases into less.

harmful ones see inside a cat there's a
honeycomb of ceramic which is coated

in metals such as palladium and
platinum as the exhaust gases pass

over the metals it gets chemically
altered to be less harmful now these

cats that Mike's got hold of a direct
replacement parts from Nissan and the

good news is they bolt straight on
and they've got integrated catalytic.

converters if we'd have kept the old
aftermarket ones on the car driven it

to a smog center in California they
would have taken one look laughed and

kicked us out the door obviously I
need to complete from the catalytic

converters back and I can tackle
that and I get the engine back in the

car and of course when Mike gives me
the exhaust yeah I'm sunshine how are

you you're right huh what's that
face for Mike whoa it's a lot in it that's

why I got your potty I even made
you a little cookie yeah yeah put the

bribes down Mike it's a big engine
isn't it it's a lot are you kidding me

have you seen the size of this
engine I still can't work out how

something this big came out of an
engine bay that small it did didn't it

blimey it's huge that's why I got your
party and I got your favorite it's nice

and strong black steamy and the
cookies delicious yeah yeah but look

around the workshop not only is
the engine on a workbench but I got all

this stuff see all these individual
bits and this massive engine all of

that was taken out just so I can get
to a poxy EGR valve right there and

it's your fault got one word to
say to you is it sorry it is actually

sorry oh it's sorry it's sorry sorry and I
really didn't know that it was gonna be.

all of that work just to replace that
valve yeah you did no one never did

you know exactly what was involved
all right I didn't know but I didn't

realize it was gonna take this much
work and that's why I'm apologizing to

you but there's always an upside
okay give it to the upside is yeah now the

engines out injectors and they're
gonna be nice and easy to fit right

because it's on the bench of course
it is yeah it's gonna be easy isn't it

okay and all you got to do is put the
engine back in in reverse yeah and those

steps are monumental but before you put
the engine back in the car we'll do us a

favor if you wouldn't mind whipping
the wheels off and I'm gonna take the

wheels and these exhaust what do you
mean the wheels we spoke about it was

already there was a state they
look great on the car I admit but you'll

be surprised how much money
they're worth out there on the Internet

secondhand plus the car is probably
worth more stock than it is with all

this aftermarket junk on it so if I
sell the wheels I get stock wheels

for it but I can sell the wheels and
exhaust but enjoy your cooking a cup

of tea before you get the wheels off
okay okay you're happy now you're

alright yeah okay but don't worry about the

cooking the cup of tea just get the
wheels off then come on you like some

sort of mechanical pirate pillaging
cookies are good though next on my.

list of emissions control is positive
crankcase ventilation it's also known

as PCV and what Mike's done is
he's gone and got me a new set of

covers because they have these tiny
little pipes on them if you look at the

rocker covers on the engine you'll
see that somebody has not only cut them

he's also blocked them off as the
engines running it builds up pressure

within the crankcase that pressure
releases up into the head and it's

supposed to escape via these
pipes this one here is fine but of course

these two are blocked they're not
doing their job that pressure that gas

naturally carries oil vapors there are
a number of ways to get rid of it a lot

of silicon to make this car legal
here I need to put back the original

factory equipment installed by Nissan
now Nissan system takes those gases

from those pipes on the valve cover
places them through a PCV valve and

then recirculates them back into
the intake where they're burned for a

second time now young Michael Brewer
has got hold of this secondhand pipe

and this is what the gases travel
through just a tiny squeeze of sealer

make sure it's oil-tight the bottom
covers are sealed with sealer the top

ones use a rubber gasket either way
all the surfaces have to be clean even

though these rocker covers are going
to be mostly hidden they look really good

finished in black right next up are
these these are the PCV valves and

there's two fitted on this car now
inside here there's a tapered plug and

a spring so as the pressure changes
the spring compresses and the valve

opens up letting gases pass through
if I shake it you hear that that's the

valve moving now these PCV valves
bolt directly into this huge intake I

mean look at it it's massive it's cast
in aluminium it's basically a series of

pipes whose sole job is to get fuel
and air into the engine if I spin this

round you'll see that the previous
owners actually of course deleted the

PCV valve and instead they've chucked
a couple of plugs in the way simply

unbolt it run the new one in and the
same goes for the other side I could

in theory bolt this intake to the top
of the engine but it is pretty wide in

fact it's wider than the engine
itself and it'll make put the engine

back in the engine bay a little bit
cumbersome so what I'm gonna do is I'm

gonna leave it out wait till the
engines fitted back in the car and

then refit it when it's in the
car I'll be able to hook up all the

pipes and that will be the PCV system
done right next up are the injectors.

these injectors are held in place by
this little aluminium plate they then

pull out like so now if I compare an
oversized injector against an original

one you'll see that there's four
holes in the end that allows the flow of

the injector now this one the larger
one has a flow rate of 740 cubic

centimeters a minute whereas the
original one still has four holes but

they're significantly smaller this
one has a flow rate of only 370 cubic

centimeters a minute but that is
the correct factory setting these stock

fuel injectors won't cost us
horsepower it's just that the bigger

ones were required to keep up
with the increased fuel demand on the

modified engines of course after all
this work is done I'll have to get the ECU

remapped back to stock and then
the car will run like it's rolled off the

factory floor now you made me thinking
what am I doing in this strange car.

park in the middle of nowhere when I
could be sat in the office clicking away

with my mouse and buying Nissan
300 ZX parts well it's no fun in that is.

there so I thought I'd come and see
a friend of mine he's a Nissan racing

legend the man that took the 300 ZX to
much frame his name is Steve Millen and.

he says he's got a few toys for
me to look at oh look at this oh this is

my kind of playground look at that
race cars everywhere this is the best of

Nissan in the period they won
Daytona Sebring and they won their

class at Le Mans all in one year with
Steve behind the wheel and here is

the legend himself Steve good day Mike
how are you right to see you really good.

so tell me about this car back in 1989
Nissan were releasing a new R32 Z

car and it was a very very important
cut to them so they thought the best

way with their marketing program was
to go racing with the car yeah so they

funded this team for seven years
and we raced in all the big races in

America and some overseas and so on
as well well listen I could stand here all

day talking about not only this car
but all the other stuff that you've got

around you but I haven't come here
for this I've actually come here because

you've taken some of the stock
stuff off these cars right and I'm after

an exhaust system and a set of
wheels that's kind of thinking maybe

you've got something laying around
I haven't got anything here Mike but.

let's go over to still on and you
can talk to my son Kyle and maybe

he's got something perfect okay
now this looks like a family member it is

Mike I'd like you to meet Kyle Kyle
very nice to meet you Kyle runs still

in there and he's gonna be a guy
that's gonna help you out fantastic

so Kyle Wow look at the size
of this place so tell me a little bit

about still and what you do it
well this is where we do all of our

manufacturing here in Costa
Mesa California so we do our exhaust

systems and air intakes we have our
polyurethane injection manufacturing

so this is your core business isn't
it exhaust systems yes this is what

you do the most of because I have
gotten this am 300 ZX but I want to

put a stock exhaust on it so have
you got one I do actually I just saw it the

other day it's in good condition it's
30 years old now but it's in good shape

lovely is it sort of gift the ball
it's tradable the trade with what

labor what you do some of the
quality control for us and I'll go get

that exhaust what do you mean
quality control what is that what does

that mean well everything has to
be proven that it fits on the car so

what we have here is a fixture that
simulates the car and so it's got all

your key mounting points and I got
a whole stack of exhaust that need to

go into this fixture and make sure
they fit do you not have a person at the

factory that can do this for you I
thought that was you what you want me

to go through all these stacks of
exhaust to make sure they fit in this

jig do you want that exhaust have
you got that exhaust I'm pretty sure I

can go look for one yeah I do want
the exhaust so what do I do then just

slot into here so just release the
flange yeah locate your hanger and

locate your tip exhaust will come right
out and off you go right simple as that

put the production one in lovely
clamp things down yep clamp those in

make sure you're good yeah if it's
the fixture one down yep and then

clump that one down and that's
fine is it yeah now we know what fit the

car did you show me out do another
10 I think you've got the idea after the

first one fair point you go and
find the exhaust I'll get on with doing

this I think he's winding me up though
surely he's gonna come back in a minute

and he's gonna tell me to stop and
some guys gonna do it that's number one.

they're heavy as well it's not
like it's a light job it's a heavy job.

it seriously oh no more Kyle Pete
oh no this one this one looks very

secondhand yes sir is this the one
then this is it it's absolutely fantastic

well listen I've done I think about
50 of these for you we appreciate it so

is that like a fair trade I'd say
we're about fair on this trade load

that in the car for us there's something
really cool about working on an engine

when it's out of a car and it means
you have that extra space so I've taken

advantage of it giving the engine a
really good clean given the engine Bay.

a clean cleaned up all my tools clean
the workshop even clean my hands.

because now I'm in the zone I need
to get that massive lump into this what

looks like an increasingly smaller
hole now I could have disconnected the

gearbox from the engine and lifted
it out the top but the fact is on this

car it's far easier just to undo the
subframe use the ramp and lift the car

off the engine without snagging
anything and that is it the subframes

docked and these they're those
subframe bolts even though that was a

little bit hairy leaving
everything attached is

still way easier than taking
the engine out the top.

imagine trying to get the engine in
this in the way there's that PCB valve

I've already fitted using some hose
on this Jubilee clip I'm just gonna link

it up to the valve cover and that is
the PCV system done see now I can

finish the EGR system this is an
electronic solenoid that uses vacuum to

actuate the EGR valve which
of course is buried well it's buried

right back there in fact can't
even see it and this is called the

crossover tube and it links both sides
of the intake together now because this

car runs twin turbos it actually
runs the risk of one side behaving

differently than the other but what
this tube does is it actually helps

equalize the pressure across the whole
engine oh yeah as expected this has

been fitted with an aftermarket air
filter right there well the good news

is it still has all the stock piping
see big gulps of air coming via the

front and then this piping delivers
that cool cold air to the engine these

pipes are essential now the final
piece of the emissions puzzle is this

this is a brand new but stock air
box this will be going back in the

car and then from here I'm gonna
be salvaging this the mass airflow

sensor and then of course these
pipes hey up fella hey you did all look at

engine bay wow that really has
cleaned up that looks fantastic

you get the exhaust and the silencers
I sent you down yeah they're already

fit they're on the car perfect and I
see you got the new air box as well

I've got a lovely set of original
wheels to bolt to the car they're

gonna look really good right so you
sold the old ones yeah we're already

making money on this car sold the
old ones for a profit these were a lot

cheaper all you got to do is get
the other three they're in my car put

them on this car because I've got
a little important job to do so you're.

not gonna help no no now this
part goes in first but it's fitted from

underneath there it is my work is done
the engine is now back to stock and I

have got rid of all that extra
horsepower and in accordance with

Mike's plan this car can now
be sold here in California hope.

everything's right she sounds epic
but it's not just about the way the car

sounds she's now pushing out less
harmful emissions into the Californian

air which means the test inspectors
here they're gonna be happy now there

could be a number of reasons why the
speedos not working I mean it could be

something as simple as the clocks just
broken but I start the car up I suspect

it's actually a little bit more sinister
than that because of that light

there see this car is fitted with
what's called a high-cast system high

capacity actively controlled steering
yes this car is fitted with four-wheel

steering now like most modern cars
it's actually powered by a hydraulic

steering pump which on this car
is fitted right there that makes the

movement of the front wheels easier
for the driver but at the same time that

pump also actuates these two valves
here and it's those valves that are

responsible for moving the rear wheels
now this system uses a speed sensor

that talks to the ECU via the
high-cast computer and the speed

sensor is there that's our faulty
unit right there and as a result it

intermittently cuts out the speedo
and at the same time switches off the

power steering which is what Mike
experienced on the test drive now the

rear of the car there's this hydraulic
RAM unit that's responsible for

physically moving the rear wheels
and the hydraulic RAM is controlled by

those two valves in the engine bay
and the two valves in the engine bay

are controlled by our faulty speed
sensor I'm just gonna relieve the gearbox

mount so I can lower the gearbox
just enough to slide that speed sensor

out now this is the
new one let's see if

Mike's decision to make
a slower car pays off.

L91 Nissan ZX is a turbocharged
throwback to a bygone era of flannel

and extravagantly aftermarket widgets
if you've got drainpipes on your house

so they miss it because I think they're
hanging on the back of this car I even

bought it in a homeland of grunge
the Pacific Northwest in order to get full

value I knew I'd to get this car back
to stock not to mention legal this car

isn't emissions compliant and really
only have to fit a few bits onto the

engine to wrangle the emissions well
I found more work than I bargained for

get in the proper exhaust is this
the one then this is it I spent twelve

thousand eight hundred dollars on
the car EGR valve mounts and tubes five

hundred and forty six catalytic
converters and gaskets 430 valve

covers and gaskets 118 PCB valves
and pipes 25 stock fuel injectors 650.

solenoid 103 airbox 107 and stop
wheels 400 but selling the old wheels

let's claw back 2,000 bucks for a
grand total of thirteen thousand one

hundred and seventy nine
dollars or around ten thousand

two hundred pounds and
all done in 30 man-hours.

you only need one letter for this
high-performance luxury sports car twin

turbos twin inner corners double
the fun the double your pleasure

this is the brand-new 1991 Nissan
300 ZX 300 horsepower not to 60 in 5.3

seconds three liters of
awesome once you get a Z.

this car is absolutely wicked it's
like being in a time machine it's like

going back to 1991 like in the
showroom it's brilliant what let's

snap out of it what I'm trying
to say is this car is just like the

marketing people and the engineers
intended all the way back in 1991 it's

showroom fresh yeah I mean it's
probably a bit better actually it's got

adjustable coil overs now new silencers and
more it's great got rid of all that junk.

yeah I must admit I was a little bit
uneasy because ultimately you're

telling me to do loads and loads of
extra work to take down the power

yeah but it's all about marketing see
this vehicle we've opened it up now to

the California market plus the fact
this vehicle is now small compliant.

it's got some boy has the beans
it's covered it on that noise he's just.

brilliant is it exactly as I want it to
be because before it was so loud

and noisy that aftermarket exhaust
may have give a bit more power but it's

like somebody stole some industrial
piping off an aircraft hangar and

screwed it to the back of the car
this is so much better that's nice if you

think about the type of person that's
gonna want to buy this car they're not

gonna want that drive ruined by
a loud baffling of an exhaust this is

just right it's the right note I
love the note actually when I listen

to it it's perfectly in tune I'm
staying on the track this car's got

high-cast remember four-wheel
steer I can g*n it round here look but it's

got oodles and oodles of grip I'm
gonna drift this into this bend here we go

ready come on break away you
just need to go in it fast you need to be

precise boys out drifting come on I
see what I can drift this car and you're

just not giving me a chance I just
need to concentrate what I'm doing it you.

can't drift it I can drift anything I'm
gonna bring in the magic the high-cast

system is preventing you from drifting
