some cars need no introduction the
iconic Toyota fj60 I wonder what the 60
stands for top speed which is 60 miles
an hour just tell me what's wrong with it
it's too slow and too dodgery at
least they were built to last rebuilt the
steering knuckles everywhere it's only
a little full speed what we need is a nice
five-speed gearbox in there could
get messy I was a nightmare what this is
gonna cause the vibration if you
try to run the driver this way but when
all of that sorted we'll have a
vehicle fit for any terrain the landscape.
annihilator and everyone will want one.
back in the 80s Toyota hit the market
here with a vehicle they called the fj60
and that's the vehicle I'm on my way
to go and see a 1985 of j60 long wheel
base now over the years I've always
lusted after a Toyota fj the prices have
been going through a roof I found
a fairly decent car Jerry the owner is
selling it for about thirteen thousand
dollars that's nearly eleven thousand
pounds but I know that the market
for the second and one particularly the
sweet spot 1985 they're on the
ascent I just need to make sure that
this vehicle hasn't been damaged in
any way underneath hopefully there could
be a profit in it for me
and that but I won't know
any of that till I go and
stand right in front of it.
ah look at that well it sounds all
right did it hey nice one that do you.
nice to meet you thank you very
much for bringing the truck down I really
appreciate my pleasure sure so this is
the one yes 1985 Toyota Land Cruiser fj
60 well the first thing is this
interior wow look at that is it's super
clean it is super clean driver seats
not ripped carpets new dashes nice
condition right the handbrake is
a little bit tatty but other than that
everything else looks great didn't it
yes that's like a little treasure trove
very good have you been off-roading
it nope I haven't you haven't no sir
you haven't done no adventuring no
not yet this is the kind of vehicle that
can go to the top of a Patagonia
mountain isn't it there it is original
engine all good you can see the
original paintwork that's down in the
inner wings and that firewall nice
dry running engine to perform all right.
does well yes starts every time
lovely yeah usually do didn't they.
Toyota's that's so reliable they're
indestructible they are aren't they
so let's have a good look underneath
there's a nasty oil leak coming from.
a transfer box it's sprayed up
underneath that'll have to be done.
right okay all nice and sharp down
here very good and it's got that split
opening tailgate which is always good
gas trucks are working which is nice
yes and I love the fact you can drop
down this tailgate especially if you're
going grouse sh**ting on your
land it's very nice yes it is it's very
good lots of space in there well
it seems a nice honest vehicle
everything seems to be in place or the
trims good I won't know whether I want
it or not until I get it out there and
take it for a quick test drive do you
mind no my first drive of a 1985
Toyota fj16 for a very very long time
I've been in one of these for many
years and it feels kind of familiar but
first of all I'm gonna tell you
some of the stuff I find rather
disappointing about this old bus
number one is the paintwork as suspected
these cars over the years when people
take them down trails off-road they get
brushed up against bushes and trees
and branches and they suffer damage
down either side of the car and I
gather that's what's happened to this
and somebody's had a go at painting
it but when they painted it they've not
wet sanded it back and they've
just left it as a sort of painted car in
its raw state and it looks
absolutely awful that's number one.
number two is just not very fast
this car that's it flat out fourth gear and
I'm doing top speed which is 60 miles
an hour and that's the nature of this
four-speed gearbox it's woeful
and is this what it was like in 1985 did
people feel happy just driving around
at this speed in these vehicles are they
nuts I don't get it seriously it's too
slow and too doddery the vehicle itself
in terms of the way it handles the
way it's getting down the road the
steering's good the brakes are okay
and the gearbox although puny it does
work this is one of the first vehicles
that gave you that lofty driving
position that feeling of safety that
you got when you strap your kids in the
back and went for a drive you felt
like he was over the top of the other
traffic you felt like you could
conquer any landscape in front of you
at the moment it's too expensive
yeah I think Jerry's trying his luck a
little bit I can get it for 12 grand
I'll be happier 12 grand or less I
think that's where I need to be
when it's vehicle so how to drive it's
very good the engine is really good and
strong yeah it gets down the road nicely
back in 1985 I'm pretty sure people
were used to driving in fourth gear at 60
maybe 70 miles an hour and that
was enough for them but these days that
little puny four-speed box doesn't
cut it so I want to do something with
that and then there's the other
things the interior is great you're
right the temperature Gauge doesn't
work I think there's a leak underneath
from a transfer box the knuckles
need doing the paintwork needs
attention I do like it it just it's
there but it's not quite there yet sure.
comes down to price how much was it
I'm asking 13,250 13 250 would you take 12
grand for it I just can't do that
what's the best your take I would do
twelve five twelve thousand five
hundred I'll let your end you got
yourself a deal well done right I
just bought myself a Toyota fj60 nice
deal thank you good morning morning a
Land Cruiser and an fj60 long wheelbase
yes it's very good isn't it you
brought the vehicle all the way from
Missouri and this is it yeah all right
don't worry about it I can see that as
well I did the same thing as soon
as I see it it's been painted in a
sandstorm it's awful under a garden
sprinkler but don't worry we've got a
really good paint manipulator and
we can wet sand this car back and I'll
handle that don't worry about it
it's the ship of the desert it's not a
camel a camel is a very good ship of
the desert if you can't get camel next
best thing is a Toyota Land Cruiser
particularly the fj60 because you can
carry a load of stuff like a camel
okay forget about it just tell me
what's wrong with it you know before
we talk about what's wrong let's talk
about what's good of it because this
is the 4.2 liter inline-six engine very
very bulletproof yeah bulletproof
till it breaks down because eventually
everything breaks down that's very true
everything does break down eventually but
this one's not broken it's actually
all right and it drives okay it's a little
bit slow and dodgy and underneath
you can see it needs a bit of a tidy up
but in general it's all right so I've
got nothing to do in here yeah the
work isn't necessarily up here it's
more underneath right so the first job
you got to do really is rebuild the
steering knuckles because they sort of
exploded and they're covered
in oil so they need doing but
basically have a look underneath
at what really needs doing.
Mike there's oil everywhere it's
leaking like a tea strainer I am so.
sorry yeah it has got quite a few
leaks underneath and they do need a
dressing but you're good at that
kind of stuff and why are you all
sorting out the oil leaks you can get
me the gearbox out as well it's only a
little four speed and it's no good
because it's 60 miles an hour it sort of
runs out of speed and it's no good
today what we need is a nice five speed.
gearbox in there and I think that's a
way to add value to this vehicle and.
trust me we need to add value so if
you get me the gearbox out I'll sort that
out and I'll change it for a five
speed yeah but that's adding work
because already we've got leaks of
oil from god knows where yeah I haven't
even had a look the steering knuckles
and now a gearbox change yes good in
it hey once you see the inside
it's lovely look at that interior got a.
quality in this dash a perfect this
is real Japanese quality all of this
is working right well yes all of it
works except for there is a brake light.
that's constantly on the handbrake these
rebuilding the radios missing or not but
other than that it all works okay
shift over I'm gonna tell you a little
bit about the story of the Toyota fj
because he's really interesting do you
know where they come from nope right
in the Second World w*r the Japanese
found an American Jeep that was left
behind and they sent it back to Japan
and they said copy that and they did
and they created the fj series even the
j and fj means Jeep Wow it's a bit
cheeky is a bit cheeky but then as an
every other manufacturer copied
everybody else it's kind of the way of
things isn't it but look at the
success they had they sold this
vehicle globally all over the world
and they're really sought after and
people well they're still going crazy
for them yeah I know everybody loves
these Jeeps there's this huge
passionate following which worries me
because passionate means expensive
no they are very expensive yeah so how
much twelve and a half thousand dollars
right it's our job to just add a little
bit of value to the vehicle we can do
that by turning up the paintwork five
speed gearbox dude and knuckles
tidy up the engine bay make this vehicle
really desirable and I'll find it's a
customer for it I'm hoping I find five
grand in the glove box trust me
you won't I've been every inch of this
vehicle I've nearly pulled it apart
you won't even find a shilling if you
look up the word illustrious in the
dictionary it's defined as well-known
respected and admired for its past
achievements and if you think about the
FJ range of vehicles it is the very
very definition of the word illustrious.
we might cause this the ship of
the desert and he's absolutely right
because it's built to just keep
going and going and going even if it's
really hot and dusty climates the
thing is though for me it's more than
that it's a car for all seasons
because it's built to carry loads and.
loads of people but still have all the
modern things that you'd expect from an
SUV and on top of that it's said that
you can only k*ll a Land Cruiser with
rust now Mike has tasked
me to fit a new gearbox in the
car and his famous last words
were it's just a simple swap.
now this is the original gearbox
off the car and I dropped it out in one
big lump with the transfer case and
that same original transfer case is now
broken down into all these tiny bits
and the reason I had to take it down so
much is because you have to take it
apart to remove it from the gearbox and
that's because this is a split
transfer case now this is our new
replacement gearbox and the gearbox
in the Land Cruiser is critical it's.
part of that bulletproof package
problem is our old one has a pretty
average top end in fact Mike says it's
around 60 miles an hour but when you
consider at the time the speed limit in
the US was around 55 miles an hour it.
was all part of that Land Cruiser
mentality to build something that goes
further just not faster but of course
today's demands have changed
people now want both now Toyota
realized this as well so as the years
went on they also developed the
gearboxes now we're going to be using
this a later gearbox out of an fj62
and straightaway you'll notice that it
has this extra fifth gear this
overdrive gear whereas you notice on.
the old one has the similar casing
but it's got this gap now this new
gearbox is going to allow for proper
cruising speeds on really fast roads
and when you think about it that's
something that our Land Cruiser has.
never ever experienced now the
fj62 gearbox isn't available in the US so
Mike shipped this in and chosen it
because it's a really popular upgrade
now I've given everything a clean
and I've laid it all out on my bench see
now's the time for the tricky bit
I've got to put it all back together
which means reassembling the transfer
case to the gearbox and then fit both
the one big unit back into the car
right the first part is this in a housing
plate which mounts here on the back of
the gearbox the reason I'm showing you
on the old gearbox is because it
takes eight bolts of which this one the
middle one is now obsolete because
of course we have the fifth gear in the
way so to reuse this I need to
plug that hole which I'm gonna do I'm
using a half-inch tap to create threads
within the aluminium housing and a
matching threaded grommet with a dab
of liquid PTFE to plug the hole now the
last modification is this little
plastic nipple here diverts oil into
the fifth gear here if I spin that
round grab a new gasket this I'm just
adding a little drop of sealer to these
bolts and then using a torque wrench.
I'm gonna tighten them up 47
foot-pounds right now I can start with
some internals kicking off with
this gear selector next up I'm going to
install this idler shaft should just
slide in perfect and then the idler
gear itself starting off with this
little washer I have to be really
careful with the idler gears inside
there there's two sets of needle
bearings likely to fall out perfect
now this chunk here this is the rear
outward gear line this hole up and
then make sure all the gears mesh one
at a time perfect and give that
a little whirl right next is this the.
main output gear this slides on this
little collar and then this bearing goes
on here but needs a little bit of
persuasion now I'm gonna close all this
off starting off first by fitting a
new gasket and then it all gets
protected with this now this is known
as a split transfer case because you
have to split it apart to get it off some
models have it in one piece but the
split ones are seen as more reliable
it might be a bit of extra work but I
take the liability any day now what's
cool about this car is that every day
it's a two-wheel drive car it only
engages the rear prop shaft and drives
the rear wheels it's only when you
use the second gear stick it engages
the front prop shaft and the car becomes
four-wheel drive but above that you
need to get out the car and manually
lock the front locking hubs now the car
is four-wheel drive and it can tackle
any terrain I'm just gonna use this
torque wrench tighten these down
properly and install the output shaft
cover right next up is the drive
shaft flange which slides onto the
splines and then it's held on with a
washer and a pretty hefty nut so the
hold this all in place I've made a very
simple bit of bar with two holes in and.
I'm using the bigger torque wrench.
perfect next up is this washer and
another hefty nut I'll use my trusty
tool again and then more sealant
in the last cover right next up is this
really clever hollow bolt the
reason it's hollow is it houses this tiny
little spring and on the end of that
there's little ball bearing now this
one provides a tiny bit of pressure
to this forward and back selector
shaft goes in the side and is locked
in place and next up there's this
little sensor that tells the car it's
in four-wheel drive right that's the
bulk of my transfer case done now
I get to reassemble the gear linkage
starting off with this dust boot
then this bolt acts as a pivot goes into
the side of the gearbox housing and
now the linkage slides into the pivot
bolt and then the shift lever and
then this end gets a split pin now.
that's exactly how it should feel
really positive right so right now the
transfer case is in two-wheel drive
high ratio so if I turn the gearbox
simulating the engine running it's going
to put power into the rear wheels only
if however I move it back to four
wheel drive still high ratio turn the
gearbox it now not only drives
the rear wheels but it also drives the
front wheels if I move it into
neutral turn the engine it's generating
power through the gearbox but
the shafts aren't moving the car's
stationary but you can add your PTO
unit and drive another bit of kit move
it down to low ratio I'm still turning
now four wheels but the ratios
slightly lower it's perfect for boggy
ground this thing's quite heavy and
bulky you've just got to tackle it
one bit at a time I'm using this pole
Jack to take the pressure and weight
so I can remove this big and clumsy
trans Jack now the trans Jacks out the
way I can attach the gearbox mount now I
can get the crossmember on and
that is the gearbox done the great news
about this new five-speed gearbox is
exactly the same dimensions as the old
four-speed which means the original
prop shafts are going to drop straight in
but I did notice when I took them off
there's quite a bit of play in there so
I'm not going to risk it I'm going
to use this opportunity to get them
fixed although I say me when I
really mean so I got to give the old man.
something to do now this car suffers
with a problem that often gets left
because it looks like a nightmare
job and what owners tend to do is keep
topping up with oil and grease as a
means of masking over the issue now the
chances are if you own a car that has
this kind of knuckle steering joint that
it's probably leaked because it's a
really common issue now this axle
casings hollow it's filled with oil
from this little plug here and that
oil lubricates the differential and
the two drive shafts now somewhere
around about here internally there's
an oil seal and that seal prevents the
oil escaping from the axle casing
into this joint because that joints now
lubricated by grease and the problem
is if that seal breaks then unfortunately
oil escapes the axle casing and
contaminates the grease now around
here there's a gasket that's
designed to withstand the thick heavy
viscosity of grease so of course
when it's mixed with oil it thins out
and it leaks to get to the knuckle I
first need to remove the brake line
and the caliper now this joint here
is called a closed knuckle joint it's
kind of like a ball and socket a
bit like a hip joint and it allows.
articulation but I just free the knuckle
from the ball joint now this knuckle
design complements this fixed
live axle you get a load of articulation
while still delivering drive you
can tell that our seal has failed just
from how wet it is it's one of
those things if you leave it it's
gonna drain the axle of oil and
that'll be catastrophic this could get
messy yeah this should be grease it's
very liquid in fact it's more like oil.
definite bust seal.
this type of steering joint was found
on loads of 4x4s in the 60s and 70s.
cars like the Ford f100
the Ford bronco the
Chevy blazer the cj
range of jeeps they're all
pretty big hitters and
frankly that speaks volumes.
now these closed joints are way better
protected when they're looked after.
and it's said that this
design has a better
delivery of power when
you're going for a turn.
I think given the choice I'd take this
design even though this is a bit more work.
oh you can just tell by the weight
of it this joint is built for purpose
but it's supposed to
go over rough roads and
rocks and this joint
here our ball and socket.
it's also really hefty
now this is known as
a burfield joint it's
kind of like a cv joint
inside there while
all of this is strong
unfortunately this
gasket by its very nature
has to be made of a
softer material and that's
the problem the
gasket and the oil seal in
there that's this joint's
weak link and before
I think about putting
this back together I.
don't know if it's going to work or not
I don't know if it's going to work or not
happy birthday dear boy hey well it's not
actually my birthday but thanks anyway well
technically it is and
I do feel like I bought
all your birthday
presents at once inside
that box right so either that's a cake
or a box of bolts well unfortunately it's.
the steering knuckle
rebuild kit for the Toyota
yay how was that
gearbox did that go in nice
and easy that was a
nightmare if that's a split
transfer case it was
an absolute shed load of
work well if you pardon
the pun that's no piece
of cake either listen
to this it sounds like
a broken teapot in
there there's a load of
parts that's going to
be difficult in comparison
that's going to be
easy really yeah I know
you've got that to do
you've got the handbrake
rebuild to do lots of
other stuff so I thought
you know what I'll
come down and see if I
can assist you with
anything yes she can drive
shafts drive shafts there's nothing wrong
with these these bolts straight on to that
replacement gearbox
they're fine in terms of
size and dimension
but feel it this one's
completely locked
solid this one's got a little
bit of play in it so I'm
hoping that you can
take these away swap
the ujs out get them
refurbished and bring
about brand new actually
I know a little company
around the corner who.
can help me refurbish
these yeah so no problem
at all leave it with me lovely enjoy your
birthday present better if it was cake now
the drive shafts don't
really need to change
for our fj60 now it's
had its replacement fj62
five-speed gearbox
they had the same length
and had the same
geometry but and tells me that
our ones are particularly
second-hand the u-joints
are locked up and they're just a bit of a
mess and they could do with refurbishing so
I've come down to see
my friend he's called
Brian he runs this
company they're called drive
shaft pros and when you look in any direction
I'm just surrounded by drive shafts.
these are the drive
shafts I spoke to you about
these are off my Toyota
fj60 I've upgraded a gearbox
to an fj62 okay the
drive shafts at the right
length just at my
mechanic camera can see.
could do with refurbishing
what do you reckon
yeah you're right
yeah it's got a good it's
seized up on these two caps right here so
it won't even go in one direction so we'll
tear that apart and see
what's going on inside
the first step is we'll
throw it in the parts.
washer it's got some pressurized jets on
the side it's kind of like a big car wash.
this is going to pull right out and we'll
just want to make sure that the cap of this
and the cap of this are perfectly parallel
in line right so at the moment they are
they are out of phase we call
it out of phase and what this is
going to cause is a vibration if
you try to run the drive shaft this way.
now junior here is
using what I call a bench
press he's pressing
out the u-joint caps
that enables him to
take the whole thing apart
once it's all apart it's
going to go back in
the parts washer it's going to get cleaned
again need to remove all the debris all the
junk anything that's in there before he can
start reassembling it and putting it back
together that way we
get a nice clean free
motion so then Brian
all cleaned up and ready
for reassembly and
these are our new u-joints
are they yep we have a
four brand new u-joints
that we'll be installing
into the front and
rear shaft and throw it
on the balancer lovely.
to make the shaft absolutely straight
it's heated to expand certain sections.
and cooled with water
to shrink other sections
now miggy is going to
be spinning up my shaft
to 2600 rpm that's to
simulate what happens
when it's in the car
once it's spun up he will
then see by this
computer behind him where
it's out of balance then
miggy is gonna start
taping down little weights on the shaft to
get it perfectly balanced once he's happy
and he's got a pass reading on all he will
then bring down this it's a spot welder and
he's going to spot weld
those weights on so
they will never fly
off again in the future.
the drive shaft's been
painted it's been balanced.
so Brian i can see
we've got the splines and
the arrows lined up and
the two couplings either
end all in phase that's right yeah as long
as we haven't affected the weld and switch
the orientation we
should just be able to
line up the u-joints
and slide this right in.
look at that to replace
the drive shafts on
this car would have
cost it in excess of 500
bucks to repair the drive
shafts would be about
200 bucks yeah less
than 200 less than 200 to
replace them so massive
saving I've given all
the parts a really good
cleanup and I've laid out
the rebuild kit that
Mike's given me and it
might look like a lot
of bits but actually this
is fairly straightforward
now this is that old
oil seal that I've
removed from the axle this
is responsible for keeping
the oil within the axle
casing servicing the
diff and the drive shafts
and preventing it from getting into
the greasy area i'm going to swap that
for a nice new one
and this thing here this
is that rubber seal
that sits on the back of
the knuckle here and is responsible for
keeping all the grease in the thing about
this is it's not perfect
grease does generally
work its way out of
it so while the service
on that car is every 10 000 miles every 5
000 miles this gets re-packed with grease
via that tiny little nipple there now if
you imagine if grease can get past this
oil most definitely will i
reassemble the knuckle
using all new seals and
gaskets to ensure that
not only the grease stays in the knuckle
where it belongs but also so that the gear
roll stays behind the axle seal yeah that
feels so much better nice and positive.
there's four components to the rear
of this knuckle joint there's the first one
is this metal clip which
slides in there that
acts as a kind of scraper making sure the
inside of the surface is clean keeping the
grease on the inside
then there's the rubber
gasket that helps keep
the grease on the inside
then there's this kind
of fabric one that helps.
clean the outside keeping
this surface nice and
clean and then all of
that is held in place.
by these retaining
clips see this is the right
consistency of grease
not that liquid oily
substance that was in
there before right one
of Mike's gaskets
with the parts nice and
clean and using all new gaskets
the assembly is quick and easy.
there's no real way
of preventing that inner
seal from leaking it's
just a matter of miles.
but if you stay on top of the knuckle grease
and keep the diff oil in good condition
you can prolong its life you see
slow and steady is the only way to do it
and then you realize
you're only halfway through.
and Mike's warned
me that the handbrake
doesn't function and at
the same time the brake
warning light on the
dash doesn't work and at
first i thought the two
things were connected
but i opened up the bonnet and had a look
underneath and it turns out that somebody's
put a new master cylinder in with a new
reservoir and a new cap that's not even.
wired into the loom
now it gets even better
because fishing around
in the engine there's.
the original cap off the
original master cylinder
still wired into the
wiring loom now this
works on a simple float
mechanism sits in the
reservoir as the levels
are high there's no
light as it drops it
creates a circuit turns
the light on on the dash
and warms the driver
so what i reckon is this is shaking around
in the engine flicking the light on and off
now this should be
fairly easy to fix all i need
to do is splice the new
cap into the original loom.
i'm deliberately staggering my cuts
to avoid any potential wire contact.
stripping the ends
pre-fitting some shrink wrap
a bit of flux paste
and soldering the wires
together tidying it all up
with a shrink wrap and
a heat g*n right now a
little check remove the
lid keep hold of the
float turn the ignition
on perfect now that just
leaves the handbrake.
now in america the handbrake is called
an emergency brake or e-brake for short
and in a country dominated by automatics it
actually seizes up because a lot of people
don't use them they rely on the automatic
gearbox in park mode to catch the vehicle.
now i mean it feels
really stiff it's not
moving very far but
the handbrake itself feels
really solid and that's
the point it's supposed
to create a mechanical
advantage a really big
movement up top creates
a smaller movement at
the bottom but that
movement's way more powerful.
yeah i need to see what's
going on underneath.
now underneath here
yeah there's the base
that's the bottom half
of that handbrake lever
and it joins this really big central cable
that's secured to the underside of the car
all the way down to
this pivot point here and
it's at this point when
you pull the lever
it spreads the load evenly so it goes
50 50 to each one of the rear wheels.
so now if i remove
the drum you'll see that
the cable enters to
this lever here and that
actuates the rear shoes
now if you have a car
with disc brakes on
the rear the shoes are
often hidden within
the disc itself or there's
a second dedicated
caliper now that lever moves
this tiny little cable
which operates the shoes
mechanically it's a
completely different system
to the hydraulic one
where you press the brake
pedal the law states
that you have to have two
independent systems so if the hydraulics
ever fail you can always pull the handbrake
because the hydraulics
in our car are pretty
good that's my guess
there's something wrong with
this now if i pull the cable simulating the
handbrake movement and that's pretty solid.
yeah i can't move that with my hand.
all of this investigation
has narrowed down the
handbrake problem to
one specific component.
and here's the problem
this bracket here and
i can see straight
away i can feel it it's
absolutely locked solid
this should be moving
freely and i reckon that
movement i had in the
handbrake was simply the cable stretching
until it got to this point here and then
unfortunately it was all locked
up by this i might be able to save
it it doesn't look broken if i
remove that the pin's in place.
let me throw it in here
and put some penetrating
fluid on it hopefully
this will free it up.
it's pretty stiff it is
loosening up slowly.
yeah that's really loosened up now this is
great news it means I've saved this part.
right now if i grab
the cable yeah look at
that see it's nice and
free now even without
the mechanical advantage of the handbrake
lever that's how it should be I've also
noticed while i'm in
here these shoes aren't
actually that bad i'm
going to replace them
anyway that was exactly the same on this
side and i managed to free the mechanism up
and that is it the handbrake
is done and on top
of that i put new brake
shoes in on both sides
and they cost only 30
dollars it's a shade over
20 quid now all i'm
waiting for is Mike those
drive shafts we got
hold of the indestructible
icon that is the Toyota
fj60 indestructible
reliable but slow just
not very fast this car
that's it really slow Mike
not without its problem
it's only a little four
speed but with a new
five-speed gearbox
look at that and a wave of
anti-magical wand that's really loosened up
now this is a land cruiser that will keep
cruising the land for
many years to come yep i
know that's bad even
by my standards let's talk
about money we got the
car for 12 500 the gearbox
was 2300 the original
gearbox sold for 600 so
we'll take 600 off the
brakes 175 knuckle rear
build gets 105 drive
shaft 200 the paint and
paint correction came
to 600 this gives us a
grand total of 15 280
bucks around 12 000 pounds
and 24 man hours i'm
so glad our land cruise is
much more freeway
capable now it's got that fifth
gear but this is where
it's supposed to live
yeah when it was at four
speed 60 miles an hour
it had taken us hours
but now we can just
cruise along the
motorway thanks to that fifth
gear conversion have
you ever thought of a
vehicle that could be
more capable of tackling
any kind of terrain and
looking as good as it
does than our little
Toyota land cruiser yeah
i just cast my mind
back the day you brought
it in the workshop it
didn't look like this.
the paint work was awful
but thanks to Mel he's
wet sanded it and he's
absolutely knocked it out
the part but this vehicle
is now ready yeah but
it's more than ready
because remember think about
what land cruiser
did it created a legacy
forever it's supposed
to be in this environment
you know in the middle
east they called us
the ship of the desert
but today i think we're
going to call it the
landscape annihilator all
right so where are we what we're doing well
this is tay hum ranch now you may think
that i brought you to
our destination point.
no no where this vehicle
is capable of going
not many vehicles
can get there this is just
the starting point of
today's adventure so
jump in buckle yourself
up and let's off-road.
at the moment we're not even
scratching the surface i know we can
Chuck it anywhere and we
can go anywhere but this is just
gentle what i would call green laning
plodding plodding green laning now
now this is a little bit more
challenging all right so this is 45 degree
sleep bank up we go and i'm not even
going to tell you uh we just absolutely
munch through that munch through it
easy right easy easy climb that sucker.
go on you can do it
look at that fantastic
I'll tell you what for
a 34 year old fj60 it's
handling so well the
steering on this car is lovely.
i mean look let's face
it Jeep invented the
4x4 they really did Land
Rover run with a 4x4
but it was Toyota that made it reliable and
i think that's a fair point isn't it i mean
yeah this this brand
has left the legacy of
all off-road vehicles
and there's a reason why
these just live on forever it's handling
so well and the steering is fantastic this
finger turn on the sixpence what
a steering on this car is lovely.
okay so you need the 34 year old Toyota to
come and rescue you in your newer vehicle.
if you want to put it
that way uh please how
embarrassing for them
oh dear all right lads.
we're on the way no
wonder they got stuck go
on then where you go
go on son keep backing
up there you go you got it you got it
oh look at them look at them stuck.
it is like Wheeler dealer
rescue services isn't it.
but yeah i mean look for us the market for
the Toyota land cruiser is really strong.
i know it's strong
because this was a tough
vehicle to find so
if it's difficult to find
it's going to be easy to sell how many
vehicles would make it to the top of this
not many would they
hey not many i wonder if
you could straddle
that rock and feel a bit
safer if you straddle that rock if i was to
be honest with you oh dear i can't even see
what can you see let's
get out here whoa yes.
yeah you were right
this is totally worth it you
know there's probably
only a handful of vehicles
ever built in the world that could
make it to the top of this mountain
our 34 year old fj60 has
annihilated this landscape.
huh.
the Toyota fj60 is
an incredibly difficult
vehicle to find which
means it's going to be
an easy vehicle to
sell especially with the
addition of the five-speed
gearbox we put in
ours so i advertised
it out there on the
Internet for a no
quibble asking price of 16
000 and in record time
for Wheeler dealers just
30 minutes later this
young man behind me Brian.
was on the phone now Brian has a bit of
an obsession he's had 20 of them so he.
knows what he's looking at but he says that
he now wants a daily driver well let's see.
if he likes that one
right now Brian how you
doing what do you
think i like it i like it
obviously the
five-speed i think is is the
reason why i'm here i
don't own an fj60 with
a five-speed and i'm
really excited to get
this on the road so it's
16 grand what do you
reckon you got new tires on it right and
the brakes have gone through and perfect
yeah absolutely perfect
yeah 16 grand perfect you
just bought yourself a
Toyota fj60 well excited
thank you this Toyota fj was an absolute
pleasure to have through the workshop
we've changed this car's future without
changing this car's originality now i also
managed to get four
asking price for it at
sixteen thousand dollars
that's around twelve
thousand pounds and
me and ant are delighted
with that and if you
want to see more iconic
vehicles like this being
turned around by me and
ant then join us again
soon on Wheeler dealers.
