it, I was one
of those gays who was
like, I could never put
on makeup and a wig and heels.
That's ridiculous.
But I stumbled on
"RuPaul's Drag Race."
That was when I was like,
whoa, what is this g*y sh*t?
- The best g*y sh*t.
- The best g*y sh*t.
And yeah, I kind of just
fell in love with it.
It obviously was something
that I was in my room hiding,
watching by myself.
That was when I was
still in the closet.
- So you were in the closet
until... how old were you?
- I want to say 19.
- So pretty late.
- Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- But your mother knew?
- She knew from when I
was very, very young.
My mum and dad would
come home, and I would
be in her dress and heels.
And she'd be like,
get it off, get it off.
Quick.
Your dad's coming in.
It was tough coming
out to my dad.
He's a very religious man,
obviously, from Lebanon.
So after I came out, we didn't
really speak for like maybe
two or three years.
And then we kind of reconnected,
and he kind of had this
essence of like, look,
I don't want to talk about it.
I don't want to acknowledge it,
but I'd rather have my son
in my life than not at all.
- That's a start.
- Yeah, exactly.
Even now,
it's still in that realm
of very superficial
relationship at the moment.
- You have been so
much fun to watch.

You are a fighter, somebody
who's willing to take risks.

It was the very first time
I'd ever been on stage.
- Was it?
- Yes.

- And I was just like, Michelle,
I'm gonna be on "Drag Race."
And you were like,
sure thing, hon.
- [laughs] Have you always
been drawn to theatricality?
- There was no other
option, Michelle.
- [laughs]
- My parents met
off-Broadway in a tiny
little theatre in the '80s.
And she was a theatre maker,
and he was an actor.
My mum was like, go,
go, go, do, perform, be.
- Is she still with us?
- No.
- How long has she been gone?
- It was 2020.
She'd been diagnosed with
cancer like a few years before.
Having that one person
disappear who was, like,
the matriarch of
the whole situation
has been just devastating.
- I went through the same thing,
and there really are no words
except that with time,
it gets easier.
It never goes away.
But it gets easier.
- Yeah.
- But the memories
will never go away.
What's been the biggest
struggle for you
in this competition?
- Sewing.
- [laughs]
- I didn't come
into this thinking
that that would be
the hardest for me
because, like,
I'm a terrible dancer.

I think you need to master
everything so that you can
pick what you're taking out.
- I agree with you.
You have such a joy about you
and such a lightness.

- So how many times
did you audition?
- So I've auditioned every
year to be on this show.
- And when you get the
call, what happens?
- Literally, my as*h*le
just fell straight out.

- I came out when I was 18.
- OK.
- When I was studying fashion,
it was the first time I
was exposed to, like, g*y men.
But then when I
came out to my mum,
I think she just went
straight to a defensive mode
and sort of is like, well,
I think you're just doing it
because it's the cool
thing to do because you're
just studying fashion,
and I'm like...
I was just really
uncomfortable at that moment.
So I left and kind of found
my own little family and sort
of just blossomed from there.
- I find your drag to have
a lot of maternal stuff.
Am I right?
- Yeah.
I do, honestly, always put
others in front of myself.
And I feel like that's a great
trait as a mother figure.
- Speaking as a mother...
- Yeah?
- you have to put yourself
first because your kids
learn from you.
If you prioritise yourself,
your health, your happiness,
your love life, whatever it is
that you need to prioritise,
they're gonna see that
and say, when I grow up,
I want to prioritise myself.
- Yeah, I know, I know.
I did learn that
during my time here.
- What's your relationship
like with your mother?
- We send each other
a couple of messages a year.
And that'd be it.

- Yeah.
- How does that make you feel?
- Mm, not great.

The love is still there.
It's just been quite
a distant relationship.
- It doesn't have
to be that way, though.

I've been very insecure

that I am having.

away from this competition
is not to second guess

was so strong.

really safe with these girls.

But what I loved about that

- She's a genius.
She clearly is so
invested in the art form
and how she can surprise
while also being really silly.
- Like, she's proper funny.
Just to turn around
and make me laugh out loud
is pretty special.
Performance-wise,
I didn't realise
she didn't have much
experience in dancing at all.
I thought she k*lled it.
- She's been a powerhouse from
the beginning, not traditional.
She's been too, too much, and
we loved every minute of it.
Mandy Moobs.
- Mandy, tonight's performance
was just so camp, so g*y.
- I've started to
think of Mandy as kind
of the heart of this season.
Growing up, I would have
so loved to have seen
someone like Mandy on my TV.
It makes me, like,
a little bit emotional.
- Aw.
- She's got this grace about her
but also this kind of Aussie
bogan-ness, and I love a bogan.
- If I was an Aussie,
I would be bogan, for sure.
So I think there's
a relatability factor.
If we were judging this
Maxi Challenge alone,
she was on top.
Vybe.
- Vybe is the ultimate
Australian showgirl.
- She came to us
already fully formed.
Sometimes the cooked
queens, they come in,
and they don't really
know where to go.
But Vybe has just kept
getting better and better.
- I almost got,
like, a crush on her
where I had to look
away for a second.
I was like, oh, my goodness.
- She has won almost
many, many times.
- Yeah.
- And then my favourite moment
was seeing her in that
gown tonight.
You could see how proud she was.
