01x03 - Bad Bar Babes

There were definitely girls
that made it a point to be mean.

She would go through any lengths
to get what she wanted.

ANDI:
When you're a teenage girl,

and you have all these emotions,
nothing matters.

I don't think she was
ever her friend at all.

Betrayal isn't even
a strong enough word.

A dark,
narcissistic m*rder*r.

She's just very deceitful.
She's messed up and evil.

[theme music playing]

AMANDA: As a teenager
growing up in Redlands,

I would say
it's pretty conservative.

We're known for having a lot
of churches in the area.

It was super boring
and not a lot going on.

The high schools
out there are very

upperclass, very suburban,
very preppy.

AMANDA: Redlands East Valley,
it was very cliquey.

A lot of girls had, like, blonde
hair, blue eyes kind of thing.

There was a -- definitely
a big separation of,

the jocks and maybe
the stoner kids

and the artsy kids
and the nerdy kids.

And then there was a separate
crowd of the goth kids.

That was their time
to be different.

A lot of us had
a gothic look

or, like, a punk look
or a metalhead look.

The whole purpose of our group
was, you know, if you're lost,

you know, come to us,

you know,
we'll look after you.

We'll be your friends.

NARRATOR:
When Kelly Bullwinkle arrives

at Redlands East Valley High,

she's a bright,
outgoing 14-year-old.

She had her own personality,
and she let it shine through,

but she didn't fit the preppy
cheerleader type.

Kelly was very soulful.
She was a deep thinker.

She loved to journal.
She was an amazing writer.

ROBB: Kelly was kind of alone
a lot, because her mother,

single mother,
she was in the Coast Guard.

Kelly lived with her mom
and her mom's friend, Laura,

but Kelly would often have
the house to herself.

I think she wanted to be
anybody's friend.

ANDI: When she first
came to the school,

she was kind of lost.

When you come into a high school
and you don't know anybody,

you're literally drowning.

There's a lot of anxiety.

There were definitely girls
that were exclusionary.

NARRATOR:
But in her junior year,

Kelly makes a new friend,

senior Kinzie Noordman.

Known as a leader,

Kinzie launched the school's
"Friends of Lesbians

and Gays Club,"
also known as FLAG.

She had a very,
very good self-esteem.

I am sure that there were
probably a lot of

kids that looked up to Kinzie,
because she started that club.

Kinzie and Kelly were both
known to me to be bisexual.

I do think that maybe Kelly
was drawn to Kinzie, because

it seemed as though Kinzie was
more out about her sexuality.

NARRATOR:
Completing this cool

alterna-clique is junior
Elody Romero.

AMANDA: She was kind of
more quiet and maybe

standoffish, too --
kind of like maybe, uh, c*ck.

I could see

maybe some people
would have thought that

Elody was maybe intimidating.

NARRATOR: And there's one guy
in this girl group,

senior Damien Guerrero.

Damien was very much the goth
aesthetic, slicked back hair.

He kind of seemed,
like, unapproachable.

He would wear black nail polish
and, like, rings a lot,

just black clothes a lot.

AMY: People liked Damien
because he's different.

He's edgy.
He's unlike everybody else.

MATT: He was charismatic --
like, people were drawn to him.

He would quote philosophy.

He would make himself sound
highly intelligent.

ANDI: That was definitely
Damien's personality.

He was very much into, like,
the Quentin Tarantino movies

and, you know,
the "Natural Born K*llers,"

and he had this
smugness to him, like,

you know, he was -- that humans
were scum and, you know,

maybe he was better than that.

MATT: Damien was dating Elody.

They were like --
I guess you

could say the cute
little goth couple.

NARRATOR: The two are
on again, off again.

The relationship has
its share of high school drama.

I think anybody who was dating
anybody at that time would be

possessive of their boyfriend
or girlfriend.

Damien and Elody were
together for that year.

And I know that Damien
and Kinzie were close.

Kelly and Kinzie
were really close.

They were all close.

NARRATOR: Throughout the 2001
to 2002 school year,

the four are inseparable.

Everybody has a period
in their life when

they felt that they were
at their best.

They felt they looked
the best.

They had the best
social circle.

Everything was good
for them.

AMANDA: Kelly was having
a good time.

She was happy,
she was fun.

NARRATOR: Even after Kinzie
and Damien graduate in 2002

and move on to local
community colleges,

the goth group remains tight,
and when it comes time for

Kelly's senior prom

the following spring,
she brings Kinzie as her date.

Kelly did like to dress up
a lot, you know,

and that prom was
a perfect occasion

to wear something fun.

Kelly and Kinzie
went together,

and they had a fun time making
out on the dance floor,

but it was probably just for
shock value or to be different.

Kelly and Kinzie,
they weren't a couple,

but I always knew them to be
best friends, really close.

NARRATOR: But after Kelly
and Elody graduate

in the spring of 2003,

the group seems
to drift apart.

AMY: It was during the summer,
and the people she used to hang

out with, she wasn't really
hanging out with them anymore.

Kelly did seem like
she was ready to move on,

and I saw that in her,
and I was happy for her.

That fall, 18-year-old Kelly
sets her sights

on meeting new friends
and begins attending

community college.

She also lands a job at a fast
food joint called Baker's.

Baker's is actually pretty
popular in town.

It seemed like Kelly had
a good group of friends or at

least a few friends that she
was really close to at work.

NARRATOR:
One of those new friends is

Cassandra Ontiveros.

Kelly and Cassandra
occasionally hang out

after work.

But tonight, Kelly has plans
with her friend, Amy,

who is bringing along
a new guy to meet Kelly.

She was going to meet
a brand-new guy

that she was kind of
interested in.

This new guy was punkish,
but he was very sweet.

He had a heart of gold,
and he

would have been
a good match for Kelly.

But I was late.

And so when we went
to go meet Kelly,

her car was gone,
and she wasn't there,

but I didn't think
too much about it.

And so two days went by,
I haven't heard from her.

And then somebody
reached out to me,

a mutual friend saying,
"Have you seen Kelly?

She didn't show up
to her shift at Baker's."

And that made me start
to wonder.

And then I noticed that Kelly
wasn't on AOL anymore,

and that was pretty alarming,
because she was always online.

She's not showing up to work.

I haven't seen her, and her
other friends haven't seen her,

and that was a big red flag
that something is wrong.

NARRATOR: When Kelly
Bullwinkle's housemate, Laura,

returns after five days
out of town,

she is rattled
by what she finds.

There's newspapers
that haven't been picked

up in the front of the house.

BRENT: She noticed that the pets
had not been fed or tended to.

That was inconsistent
with Kelly Bullwinkle.

She took very good care
of her pets.

MICHAEL: And there were
messages, quite a few,

on the answering machine from
Kelly's boss, because she

was such a great worker,
and she hadn't been to work in

a couple of days,
you know, where are you?

So that was something else
that really concerned Laura.

NARRATOR: Laura contacts
Kelly's mother,

Diana, who is aboard
a Coast Guard ship.

She makes plans to come
home immediately.

Laura also went to the Redlands
Police Department.

BRENT: When they searched
Kelly's house,

police located
a pocket knife.

There were some notes that

suggested she may have been
depressed that maybe,

maybe, she may have
hurt herself.

MICHAEL: Could she have
taken her life?

That's one of the factors
that you have to consider.

And if so,
when and how and where?

But there was really
no evidence to prove that.

That was dispelled
rather quickly.

I thought, let's hope
she just ran away.

NARRATOR:
That evening, police make

a disturbing discovery
about Kelly's whereabouts.

They located her car at
the Ontario Mills Mall.

AMY:
And that was pretty alarming.

Why would her car be...
abandoned?

BRENT: When they found
Kelly Bullwinkle's car there,

that's when I think
it really became a concern

of everyone that something bad
had happened to

Miss Bullwinkle.

NARRATOR: Investigators
find no evidence of

blood or prints
in Kelly's car.

But the hope that
she ran away vanishes.

In our minds, it looked like
maybe Kelly was kidnapped.

ROBB: I just knew when
I started hearing about it,

I remember thinking
in my heart, man...

she's not gonna be alive.

BRENT: Immediately,
the police started

interviewing everybody
that knew her.

NARRATOR:
Amy Locust tells detectives

she had plans to see Kelly
that night,

but there was no sign of her
when she got to the restaurant.

Kelly's friends have no idea
where she may have gone.

But they suggest that police
speak with Kelly's former

best friend,
Kinzie Noordman.

AMANDA: Kelly and Kinzie
had been really close.

So when Kelly went missing,

Kinzie was the first person
I thought to talk to.

And they asked her,
"When did you see her last?"

NARRATOR: Kinzie says she hadn't
seen Kelly in a while,

but they had talked
about getting together

that same night.

When Kelly never called her,
she made other plans.

MICHAEL: She said, "Damien
and I then went to

get something to eat
and went to a movie."

NARRATOR:
A receipt from the restaurant

and movie tickets confirmed
Kinzie's story,

and she's worried about
her missing friend.

Kinzie, she's upset, you know,
sad with the police officers.

Kinzie and I both
were worried.

After Kelly went missing,
we kind of reached out to

each other more,
kind of supported each other.

NARRATOR: A few days after
Kelly disappears,

her mother arrives back home.

AMY: Kinzie just wanted
to support Kelly's mom

during the time
she was missing.

She went to go see

Kelly's mom, Diana,
and started a search party.

Kinzie was very active
in the search.

Asking everybody,
did they find her yet?

Did they find her yet?

NARRATOR: Three weeks after
Kelly's disappearance,

three teens are playing
paintball in a wooded area

called Ghost Town.

It's where
kids went to hang out,

went to party,
went to use drugs,

to basically get away.

AMANDA: It's very hidden
and not very open.

So it's a place where
you could probably go

and do whatever there,
and it wouldn't be seen.

They smelled something
that smelled terrible,

and they looked over and saw
a human foot sticking out.

Apparently,
there was a shallow grave.

A piece of furniture
was rolled over

the body to kind of
conceal it.

NARRATOR: When police arrive,
they determine that

the victim is a young female.

They discover a shovel

and a 25-caliber b*llet casing
by her body.

MICHAEL: The Redlands police
officers, they hadn't IDed it,

but at the time,

I had a deep sense
that this might be Kelly.

Sure enough,

it ended up being
Kelly Bullwinkle.

They discovered also that
the clothing that she was

wearing was
the same clothing

that she was wearing
when she left Baker's

and went missing.

NARRATOR: Investigators
determine Kelly died

September 13th,
the day she disappeared.

An autopsy was conducted.

They were able
to determine that she

had been the victim of two
apparent g*nshots.

One was a kind of a grazing
wound to her head.

The other appeared to be
a very close up...

b*llet wound that was fatal.

NARRATOR: There is no evidence
of a sexual as*ault.

AMY: When I found out that
it was actually Kelly's body

they found,
I was very heartbroken.

I, like --
I took a month off work.

I just stayed in bed
most of the time.

AMANDA: Kelly's memorial
service was pretty large.

It was a big --
a big turnout.

AMY: They had huge portraits
of Kelly,

a slide show,
and it was really nice.

I heard Kinzie crying.

She was sobbing.

They had that history,
so I could see

why Kinzie was so upset.

I felt really bad for Kinzie.

That's her best friend,
and she's just hurt by this.

And I can understand,
because I'm hurt, too.

NARRATOR: The other two members
of Kelly's high school

group also attend the funeral
to pay their respects.

I saw Damien and Elody.

I think they were sitting
next to each other.

AMANDA:
A friend of mine and Kinzie

actually put together
this rock memorial.

It was on the side of the road,
and it was painted all purple

rocks, and it spelled out
her name,

and people would go there
and kind of write stuff on

these rocks as a memorial
for Kelly.

NARRATOR:
Police double their efforts,

now investigating a m*rder.

ROBB: It could have just been
some creep that k*lled her.

Somebody could have
carjacked her.

But I do think that there was
an ominous sense.

I mean, I don't know if anybody
thought it was a serial k*ller.

MICHAEL: They looked under
every stone and looked

at every relationship that
Kelly had, every contact.

AMANDA:
We were all questioned.

I remember I was at work,
and the police came to my work.

NARRATOR: Investigators
interview Kinzie again,

and this time she has
a lead for them.

Kinzie told the Redlands
police detectives about

these two individuals
that Kelly met at work.

Their names
are Eric McLoughlin

and Michael McMillan.

Kelly met the men
through her co-worker,

Cassandra, who is Michael's
cousin and Eric's girlfriend.

The two individuals involved
had some priors.

NARRATOR:
Eric and Mike were arrested

four days after Kelly
went missing

on suspicion of car theft
and are still in jail.

AMANDA: Mike went to school
with us at some point.

He was more tough,
I guess, than the circle

of people that maybe Kelly
was hanging around with.

NARRATOR: Kinzie says Mike
and Eric gave Kelly the creeps.

Following up on this lead,
police make

a stunning discovery.

AMANDA: The story that
I heard was that one of

the guys said that they were
responsible for Kelly's m*rder.

NARRATOR: Before speaking
to Mike and Eric in jail,

police search their apartment,

where they make
a shocking discovery.

They found a T-shirt
stained with blood,

and they found newspaper
articles regarding Kelly.

Finally, they had
a break in the case.

NARRATOR:
Police question Eric McLoughlin

and Cassandra Ontiveros

about the m*rder of
Kelly Bullwinkle,

while Cassandra's cousin, Mike
McMillan waits in another room.

NARRATOR: Cassandra then drops
an even bigger bombshell.

NARRATOR: But Mike, under
questioning in another room,

denies he has anything to do
with Kelly's m*rder.

He says he was just joking
about k*lling her, and he

has an alibi to back him up.

MICHAEL:
Like any good investigation,

the Redlands police detectives
checked their alibis.

NARRATOR: Both Eric and Mike
have witnesses confirming they

were with them the night
Kelly was k*lled.

Then Kelly's friend
Amanda tells police

she just remembered
a conversation she had with

Kelly five months earlier.

Kelly told me when
she came to visit me at work

that she had a boyfriend,

and I had asked
who her boyfriend was,

and Kelly told me
that it was Damien.

I was kind of surprised,
because I knew

that Damien and Elody
had been dating.

So I felt kind of bad for
Kelly in a sense, because I kind

of knew that she was probably
the side chick at the time.

NARRATOR:
Even though Damien and Elody

have a rocky on-again,
off-again relationship,

Kelly still feels guilty.

I do think that
she had some angst

over it, because she seemed
like a conscientious person.

ANDI: Damien continued
to keep contact with Kelly,

as long as it was one-on-one.

But when they were in public
or groups of friends,

it was the opposite.

He made it a point
to be mean,

to show that he had
disdain for Kelly.

AMY: It was kind of like
an a*usive relationship,

where he would be mean

and hurtful and a*usive,
verbally,

and then he would send her
a message back, and,

in a second, she would think
everything was fine.

ANDI: But when you're a teenage
girl, and you're in love and,

and you have
all these emotions

and all these hormones,
um, nothing matters.

NARRATOR: Damien was
the first boy Kelly

had ever been interested in,

and she wrote in her diary
about wanting

to lose her virginity to him.

Elody was suspicious
that something was

going on between Kelly
and Damien.

Elody was blaming Kelly
for going after Damien,

and she did not want Kelly
around Damien anymore.

NARRATOR: Police learn that
it was this rivalry

that set off the rift between

Kelly and her high school
goth friends

the summer before
she went missing.

AMY: Elody was a big
influence on their group,

so it was easy for her to tell

the other kids that Kelly
needs to be gone.

So Kinzie started
to go along with what Elody was

saying, that Kelly shouldn't be
a part of the group.

Kelly's 18th birthday,
Kinzie, Damien,

Kelly, and myself,
we rode to

a movie theater that was like

The entire time, they were
being really mean to Kelly.

It was her birthday,
and they were picking on her.

They were calling her names.

You've got your best friends,
who you

love more than anything else
in the world,

and they're being,

you know, cruel to you.

AMANDA: I think Kelly,
in a sense, was like a...

I guess, easy target,
because she was so sweet,

and people could maybe
mistreat her,

and it wouldn't necessarily
make her

stop talking to them.

AMY: She would call them all
the time and try to hang

out and show up where they're
at and that kind of behavior.

That whole group
saw her as a nuisance now,

and that really baffled her,
and she kept reaching out

and it --
it kind of drove her crazy.

AMANDA: I think that
because Kelly was younger,

and she was maybe more naive
and more, like, clingy

that they maybe
pushed her away.

AMY:
It's kind of like, okay,

so they're outcasts,
and now Kelly's an outcast to

these outcasts.

So they're kind of

doing to her what

other people are doing to them.
It doesn't make sense.

NARRATOR: The betrayal that
stings the most is Kinzie's.

AMANDA: Kinzie took Kelly
under her wing.

Kelly really did
trust Kinzie.

AMY: I remember
they invited her to a party

in a mountain house,
and she drove there.

They didn't open the door,

but she can hear laughter
behind the door.

They were hiding and laughing.

It really tore her up.

She -- she was kind of in
disbelief that they would do

that to her, and she had no
idea why they did that.

ANDI: We all know
teenage girls get jealous.

Anybody that's been a teenager
and in love, it's --

it's a rough ride.

You're not gonna have
the faculties.

I mean, there's grown women
that don't have

the faculties to be able to
walk away.

NARRATOR: Investigators dive
into the online life

of both girls
in this love triangle

and see that by
the summer, the fight had

become vicious.

Elody would be hateful
and hurtful to Kelly, and Kelly

would send the emails bashing
Elody and Damien's

relationship --
Kelly could be a little catty.

She wanted to prove that she

was really the better match
for Damien.

NARRATOR: "Just stop living
in your own little fantasy,"

Kelly writes
on June 1st,

posting the note
on Kelly's LiveJournal.

Elody wanted Kelly to
come clean about the affair,

what happened,
and Kelly said, "Okay, fine.

I will be honest."

NARRATOR: Kelly tells Elody

that she and Damien
have been seeing each other

on and off since April.

Elody's reply was,
"This stops now.

You know, you wouldn't want
anything bad to happen."

DETECTIVE: Have a seat please.

NARRATOR: Police bring Elody
Romero in for questioning after

uncovering evidence of possible

threats she made toward

days before her death.

MICHAEL: The investigators
then asked about conversations

on Kelly's computer
and statements

back and forth
about what Kelly

had done with her boyfriend.

But she indicated
to the police that

that was typically
how she talked to anybody.

And she had an alibi,
a good alibi.

She was with her mother.

DETECTIVE: Okay.

NARRATOR: Police rule out
Elody as a suspect,

and an even more promising
lead emerges.

AMANDA: Kinzie's cousin,
Scott, was really

hanging around us a lot

and trying to, like,
help in any way,

figure out what was going on
with Kelly's m*rder.

NARRATOR:
On October 15th,

Scott Simonson is
interviewed by police.

They asked him
if he had ever seen anyone

in this group of people
that had a g*n.

The police were thinking of
that 25-caliber shell casing

that had been found where
Miss Bullwinkle's body

had been located.

And the cousin indicated
that on one occasion, he had

seen a silver,
small-caliber handgun

in Damien Guerrero's car.

He said he and Damien were
riding around in his car,

and in his glove box,

he saw a silver handgun.

The investigators
get Damien in, and they...

ask him questions
about the g*n.

He said
he didn't own a g*n, he...

you know,
nothing of that sort.

MICHAEL: And then finally
admitted that his brother

had gotten him
this g*n,


ANDI: Investigators are
zeroing in on Damien.

You're a teenage boy.

You know,
obviously your anxiety is

probably pretty high
at this point.

Damien said that
he didn't like the g*n.

It creeped him out,
and he had thrown it away

in a storm drain.

They asked Damien
which storm drain, and they went

and looked, and they did not
find any weapon there.

NARRATOR: Damien maintains
he didn't have

anything to do
with Kelly's m*rder.

And on the night she
disappeared, he was with Kinzie.

And they had
the receipts to prove it.

So the next step is
you get a search warrant,

and they go to Damien's home
and they do

an extensive search there,
lasted for hours.

Which led them
to discovering

a b*llet
in his jewelry box.

MICHAEL: And they take it
over to ballistics,

the crime lab.

and it matches
the shell casing,

a 25-caliber b*llet,

the same b*llet that was
used to k*ll Kelly.

Now that the police
believe Damien may very

well have been present because
of the firearms evidence,

they interview Kinzie again,

because she said she had been
with Damien that evening.

They want to see if she will
shed any further light.

NARRATOR:
Finally, Kinzie cracks.

She tells investigators that
she saw Damien sh**t Kelly,

but it was all
a terrible mistake.

She said it was a practical
joke that went wrong.

Kinzie explained to the police
that Damien pulled out the g*n

as part of the plan
to scare Miss Bullwinkle.

Just to see
the look on her face.

NARRATOR:
Kinzie tells police

Kelly was funny
when she was scared.

There was never any intent
to k*ll her.

And unfortunately,
according to Kinzie,

the g*n held by Damien
accidentally discharged.

[g*nsh*t blasts]

At that point in time,
the police could have arrested

Kinzie, but the police make

a tactical decision at that time
to allow Kinzie to remain free,

hoping that she'll make
a phone call to one or more of

her friends and perhaps
gain some type of evidence.

Kinzie, the next morning,
does exactly

what the police
are hoping she'll do.

[phone numbers dialing]

[phone ringing]

NARRATOR: The morning
after Kinzie's shocking

admission to police,

she calls a friend and makes
another startling confession.

She admits to her boyfriend
that she was with

Damien at the scene
and that they both had k*lled

Miss Bullwinkle.

NARRATOR: The friend
immediately goes to police

and delivers
the bombshell

that Damien was not
the lone sh**ter.

MICHAEL: After they get
the information,

uh, Kinzie's confession
to her boyfriend,

she's in the car with
her parents on her way to

an attorney's office,

um, and that's when
she's arrested.

About an hour
after Kinzie is arrested,

police locate Damien exiting
a movie theater, and he's

arrested for the m*rder
of Miss Bullwinkle also.

NARRATOR: Kinzie and Damien
plead not guilty to charges

of first-degree m*rder and are
each held on $5 million bond.

I was at work and, uh,

I saw Scott in the parking lot,
and he came running up to me

and said,
"It was my [bleep] cousin

and Kinzie who was arrested
for Kelly's m*rder."

And I was like, oh, my gosh.

AMY: I was in actual shock
to where...

I -- my body didn't move,

and I couldn't talk.

BRENT: Once Kinzie was arrested,
she once again

talked to the police.

She repeated, basically,

the plan that they wanted to
frighten Miss Bullwinkle.

They concocted this plan
about two weeks before,

and then the evening before,

they had gone up and actually
dug the little shallow grave in

Ghost Town.

NARRATOR: They leave
the shovel by the grave.

BRENT: On the day of the m*rder,

Kinzie invited Miss Bullwinkle
to go hiking with her.

After Miss Bullwinkle
got off work, she met Kinzie.

They drove
in Miss Bullwinkle's car out to

the Ghost Town area.

Kinzie said they were
going to meet Damien.

They were about ready to leave
when Damien does show up.

BRENT: Damien led the three of
them over to the location where

the shallow grave had been
previously dug,

and they began
laughing about this.

Damien points the g*n
at the back of her head,

pulls the trigger.

Kinzie told the police that
immediately after the g*n

going off,

Damien blurted out
that it was an accident,

that he didn't mean to --
to fire the g*n

MATT: The first b*llet
isn't fatal.

Kelly drops,

and she's obviously hurt.

These were her horrible
last minutes.

NARRATOR: Kinzie claimed
she wanted to quickly

end Kelly's suffering.

She said that
she went ahead and she --

she fired the k*ll shot,

you know, to put her out
of her misery.

NARRATOR:
Kinzie drops off Kelly's car

at the mall parking lot.

Damien meets her there
with a change of clothes.

The two of them
will then go

to a restaurant
and then to a movie.

They'll keep the receipts

so they have an alibi.

They planned to k*ll her,
plain and simple.

I was horrified
and disgusted when I heard

that they claimed
it was a joke gone wrong.

A prank gone wrong.

It seems unlikely that
that was a joke, because Kinzie

wanted to be like the movie
"Natural Born K*llers."

"Natural Born K*llers,"
they kind of go off

on this k*lling spree, like

a Bonnie and Clyde kind of
couple, and then they run off

into the sunset basically.

Damien and Kinzie were obsessed
with "Natural Born K*llers."

It was her favorite movie,
and she...

really, I mean, really
identified with the characters.

In January 2005,
Damien Guerrero

and Kinzie Noordman go to trial
for first-degree m*rder.

MICHAEL: The motive that, uh,
then Prosecutor Ferguson had

was this kind of triangular
relationship and jealousies.

And they just wanted to find
a way for Kelly to stop

messengering Damien and --

and to just leave him alone.

And then I think even deeper
than that, Kinzie's motive,

she wanted to k*ll
a human being.

BRENT: An additional piece
of evidence which

the prosecution discovered and
used against Kinzie was her
