our number-one priority today.

I can't feel my feet.

I'm in a lot of pain

And I'm really cold.

Dave: I don't know if I've ever
really been this cold.

I'm gonna get this fire
going a little more.

I want to hear it crackling.

See it knocking down.

Oh, that's not good.

Oh, *bleep*.

Oh, my gosh. Whoa.

It's a lion.

I'm so cold.

I'm gonna finish!

Dave: we're gonna die out here
if we don't start moving.

of north america's

Continental divide,

Looming over montana's
untamed wilderness

At 6,300 feet

Lies thunder mountain.

Early winter storms

Have left this usually
bountiful region

Covered in ice and snow

Dropping day time temperatures
into single digits

And sending them
below zero at night,

Making it difficult
for anything to survive.

It's definitely cold outside.
It's frigid.

You know, everything
is mostly frozen.

It's a harsh environment.

Little things
can magnify out here,

And if they're not
taken care of,

It can become
a serious condition.

Sarah: I don't know
what the temperature is.

It definitely feels like
it's below freezing right now.

I'm extremely nervous
to get naked.

Narrator:
for the next 14 days,

Sarah and dave
will have to survive

In this frozen wilderness

Where winds can reach speeds
of 90 miles an hour

And the weather can change
in an instant.

Dave: my biggest concern,
honestly,

Is hypothermia and frostbite.

Two big factors that can make
or break the person.

I'm dave from trego, montana,

And I'm a private military
contractor.

I was a naval special warfare
boat operator in the us navy.

I've always been good
in the cold,

Even in the military where
we do helicopter operations,

Basically a maritime
extraction system

That pull us up
out of the water.

I've been through
various sere schools

Where they train you
from wilderness survival

To c*ptive survival.

I'm a little different
from most people.

Friends back at home
used to call me crazy dave,

And I'm always getting myself
kind of into trouble,

Into a little bit of a pickle
every now and then.

But I always find myself
out of it.

I live off grid
deep in the wilderness.

It's so far out there,
I didn't meet my first neighbor

Until about six months
into it.

The closest other things that
really come into the property

Are mountain lions,
bears, moose.

I live like a *bleep* viking
in the wilderness.

Preparing for this challenge,

I've done everything from
ice tubs to cryotherapy.

Give you guys an idea
of how cold it is in here.

Frost at the bottom.

It basically mimics your body

About to go into
a hypothermic state.

Being around the cold and
building a tolerance around it,

I do think I've got
a little bit of an edge there.

It's *bleep* cold!

It's been a long time

Since I've been challenged
physically and mentally,

And this opportunity provides
the perfect chance for that.

This is definitely
gonna be an experience.

Sarah:
it's very snowy, very cold.

I mean, my n*pples
are already hard.

I'm not shivering yet,
but I feel it coming.

I'm sarah. I'm from hawaii,
and I'm a mechanic.

I'm not afraid to get dirty.

I get my hands dirty
for a living.

When people look at me, they see
this little tiny 120-pound girl.

But what they don't realize is
I was a tank mechanic,

A tire installer,
I sh**t weapons on the weekend.

I was in the us army
for just under five years.

I've been exposed to the
colder environments before.

I spent eight months out of the
year in the field in colorado.

Very cold, very windy.

I'm pretty tough.
I've gone through a lot.

I would say at least
three quarters of my childhood,

I was homeless.

There were nights I was cold.

There were nights
I was hungry.

However,
I wouldn't change a thing

Because it has made me
the person I am today

And its made me very strong.

I'm fairly good at fishing.

I've done
some small game trapping.

I'm pretty confident
with my knowledge

About the local plants
in the area.

I am studying botany.
It interests me a lot

To find out
what I can use as medicine,

What I can survive off of
out here, as well.

I'm doing this challenge
really to give the middle finger

To anyone who's ever
looked down on me

Or given doubt purely
based on my gender.

Being naked in montana
in 20 degree weather

Makes me a little nervous.

But, you know,
as long as I come back

With my fingers, nose,
*bleep*, and toes, I'll be fine.

Okay, well, I guess this is it.

Dave: about to freeze
my wedding tackle off.

Sarah: I definitely feel
the cold already.

Alright, socks got to go last.

Alright, let's do this.

Alright, wild man is about
to become the ice man.

Right away, you know, you can
feel it right in your toes.

Ice is going right between them.

It's not a good feeling.
It is painful.

Narrator: dave enters
the challenge

With elite military training

And extreme cold weather
experience

But his tendency to take risks
could have dire consequences

In this frozen environment.

Dave begins with a psr,
or primitive survival rating,

Of 7.2.

The snow is incredibly painful.

Narrator:
sarah's military training

And plant knowledge compliment

Her real life survival
experience growing up homeless.

But she can sometimes
be hindered

By pressure to prove herself,

Earning her an initial psr
of 6.3.

As I'm walking through this,
I'm trying to be strategic

Because, you know,
more stepping hurts for sure.

Narrator: these extremely
cold temperatures

Can cause freezing
of skin tissue

Or frostbite
in under 15 minutes

And can lead to the loss
of fingers and toes.

All the muscles in my feet
are becoming stiff,

So I can't even really feel
my feet right now.

I'm sarah.

Dave,
nice to meet you.

So how are you feeling?

I'm feeling pretty good.
Yourself?

Good. My feet are cold.cool. Yeah, mine too.

Where are you from?

Well, I grew up
in hawaii actually.

Okay, oh *bleep*.it's obviously much different.

It's a 180, yeah.yeah. What about you?

I'm from montana, but like
four hours north west of here.

So are you a little used
to this weather?

For the most part, yeah.
Yeah.

With clothes on,
though, right?

Yeah, I would say so.

You want to see
what we've got?

Yeah, we can go ahead
and do that.

in addition to a fire starter,

Dave and sarah have been given
local buffalo and beaver hides

To help fend off the
life-threatening temperatures.

This will come in handy,
you know, for clothing.

For sure.
Or sleeping at night

Because, you know,
we'll be getting

Freezing temperatures
out here.

What did you bring
for your item?

So, I brought a pot.
Okay.

I thought this would be
really helpful.

Some hot water would be
a good morale booster.

And I also brought
some fishing line

With a couple
of fishing hooks here.

I brought this survival machete
for cutting line,

Cutting down trees.
Very nice.

I'm happy we have a blade
out here with us.

I mean, we could easily actually
make ponchos out of these.

Works?
Oh yeah, absolutely.

Alright, awesome cool.before we get going,

Do you want to get some
footwear going, or...?

I definitely do, yeah.
I think that's a smart move.

Okay, I think if we just
cut it in half,

For me,
it should be pretty good.

Kind of right down the middle.
Then you could fold it over

And we'll tie it up?yeah, sounds good.

Sarah: with our pelts,
we decided to make some shoes.

It's extremely important
to get our feet out of the snow

And keep them nice and dry.

I'd say it's pretty close
to freezing.

I know hypothermia
sets in pretty quick.

Hopefully, we can get
this done quick.

Just slip-on slippers.

some barren area, mountain lion.

I see we've got
some moose, too.

Yeah, that can all actually

I'm excited to get
some blood flow going.

Narrator: sarah and dave are now
descending over 500 feet

Below the northwest face of
thunder mountain

Where high winds pierce
these glacial valleys

And only animals
with thick hides can survive.

Powerful grizzly bear,
stealthy cougars,

And aggressive elk

Compete with wolves
and coyotes

For the limited resources

That have withstood
winter's early onslaught.

I see some footprints
down here.

It looks like some
big cat prints

Or maybe some coyotes?

There's no claw. That's actually
a cat print, yeah.

Yeah, I mean,
that's a big cat.

Yeah.
Do a lot of damage.

Definitely keep an eye out
for those guys.

They're gonna be hungry,
too.

Mountain lions are known
for their ability to ambush.

But in snowy conditions,

They're more likely to track
a potential meal.

The surface are of their paws
prevent them from sinking,

Enabling these deadly hunters
to outrun their prey.

Oh, god.

Take it slow,
take it slow.

It might be a little easier

To kind of slide across
the snow with these shoes.

Definitely already have
some snow in them.

I'm pretty cold.
I'm definitely shivering.

Definitely take it easy
down here because this is slick.

These white berries here,
please don't eat them.

Can you see how
they cluster like that,

That's a telltale sign
you don't want to eat those.

Dave: with the fact
that my partner knows

A lot of plants is huge

Because that's actually
one of my weaknesses.

She sees a plant and we say
we can eat it, I'll eat it.

So I'm really grateful for that.

So, we got
a little spring here.

I'm actually
really liking this area.

I might just
check it out.

This big green pine tree
right here.

I see a lot
of dry grass.

We've got kind of a
natural shelter up here.

So if it rains, it snows,
none of it is gonna reach us.

This could work.
Okay.

I cannot feel my feet.
I think that it's fire time.

I don't know about you?yeah. Yeah, it's fire time.

I'm just gonna kind of do
my own little bird's nest here

And hopefully this will
suffice.

I'm gonna get some
of these young trees out

And immediately gonna get
started on a shelter.

Yeah, I feel really good
about my partnership.

Sarah and I communicate
really well.

Right away, she was like,
"yeah, I'll make the fire."

I was like, "alright, cool, I'll
get started on the shelter."

The weather here
is pretty bipolar.

You know,
it'll get sunny really quick,

It'll get really cold,
it'll get windy.

It's very unpredictable,
so we're hoping for the best,

But I think we have to
expect the worst out here.

Sarah:
I really like my partner.

So far, you know, he's
definitely helping out a lot.

I appreciate
that he's put the trust in me

To get something done.

Especially something like this.

This is important.
It takes a lot of trust

In someone
to keep you warm for the night.

Come on, baby.

Dave: we only have maybe
an hour of sunlight left today,

So I'm trying to get done
what I can.

Sarah: I'm cold, and I don't
want to be cold tonight.

The temperature's
only gonna drop.

I definitely feel
a lot of pressure.

I really want to make a fire,

Not only for myself
but for my partner.

Obviously, he's gonna be cold,
too.

I'm starting to get frustrated.

It's just making it painful
to hold the striker.

I'm really cold.
I still can't feel my feet.

The possibility of losing toes
is very much a reality.

Come on. Come on.

We're gonna be freezing.

This fire is the number-one
thing on my mind for tonight.

Growing up homeless,
I did spend most of my nights

Underneath the stars.

There were nights I was cold.

There were nights
even as an adult

Where I didn't think
I was gonna make it.

This is so important,
it's unreal.

How are you doing?

These teeth here
on the back,

Those are really
tearing up my hand.

I'm already bleeding.

How about this.
You move this like that,

And I'll hold the blade still.
Some teamwork.

It's much better
than that scraper.

Mm-hmm.

Dave: we ended up doing
a group effort.

Sarah took the knife.
She got an angle.

You know,
I guarded the wind a bit

And then as we got that spark
going, it lit right up.

Yeah.
Awesome.

Sometimes you need two pairs
of hands to make them work.

So that's obviously why
we're out here as a team.

I feel good!
Yeah!

I can confidently say
we have fire.

Sarah: right now, I'm very
grateful to have a good partner.

Dave: fire is definitely
a huge morale booster.

It keeps little things
that go bump in the night away.

It keeps you warm.

As long as we take care of it,
it's gonna take care of us.

Right now,
we're camped up

Underneath
a giant pine tree.

These branches here
are kind of low hanging.

We're gonna be able
to put a wall there.

Okay.like a slanted lean-to there.

Narrator: dave and sarah
are building walls

Beneath the tree's
protective roof

To create a lean-to tepee.

They are enclosing the structure
with pine boughs

And leaving an opening
for the fire.

The next step will be
to add rocks

In front of the fire
to help reflect the heat

Back into the shelter.

That looks great.
That looks a lot better.

As long as we make it
so it can contain heat,

I think we'll be good.
Yeah.

Sarah: so this evening,
the plan is to

Just try to stay
as warm as possible

And then of course we kind of
want some more firewood

Before we hunker down
for the night.

Some smaller stuff is gonna be
a big deal for us.

It's definitely already gotten
much colder.

Yeah. I feel it, too.

The fire...

Oh, man.

Oh, man.
I'm so cold.

Night one. It's still
really cold, obviously.

And it has started to sprinkle
or lightly snow.

We're just trying
to get our fire going

A little bit more right now.

I'm definitely feeling the cold,
deep under the furs, even.

Sarah: I don't know
what time it was,

But it was some time
during the middle of the night.

We started to run out
of the smaller firewood,

Which is very important,
we found out.

So we had to walk around
in the snow

In the middle of the night
trying to find some.

Today, we're definitely gonna

To have to stock up
on some firewood

Then enhancing the shelter
a little bit

So we can stay a little warmer.

It really sucks being cold
during the night

And then not getting the chance
to warm up.

During the day, yeah.

My knees feel like
locked in place.

Yeah.it's because of the cold

And because of the positions
you get into to keep warm.

It's from all the crouching
and bending down

And definitely lack
of some vitamins

And a little bit of water,
as well.

Narrator: cold weather causes
muscles to lose more heat

And contract, creating tightness
throughout the body.

This causes more damage
to the muscle tissue

And can result
in increased soreness.

Will you hand me

I want to put
some water in there.

Great, here you go.

My shoes are just still too wet.

I can't use them.

It's actually starting to snow.

I was just hoping that
it would hold of a little while

Because I don't really know
how much we're gonna

Get done today in the snow,
if it gets any worse.

I'm gonna throw
some of these pine needles

In with our hot water.

Essentially making like
a pine needle tea.

It's gonna take out some of
those nutrients that we need.

Mainly vitamin c.

It's better to drink
hot water than cold, for sure.

Yeah, especially out here.

Yeah.

With the water being warm,

It kind of warms
you up a little bit

And it's a little morale booster
for a little while.

Not bad.
Okay, good.

I don't want to carry everything
and drag it around.

I'll just waste energy and time.

So I'll just make a pile.

Surviving out here,
it's not easy.

It's not temperate weather

Where you can just wake up
and you're fine.

It's constant work.

Energy management
is pretty important out here.

I need the calories,
honestly just to really heat

My body and function correctly.

Without that, it's very easy

To perish
in these types of conditions.

Alright.

There's a shrew.

That's *bleep* food.
That's what that is.

Okay, he's dead.

I've never eaten
a shrew before.

It's not a lot,
but it's something.

Hold your hand out.

What did you find?

That's about, I don't know,
maybe five calories.

Maybe boil it up and see
what you can do with it?

Well, I mean, we can use
his guts for fish bait.

Sarah: it is only day two and,
I mean,

My stomach is already growling.

I guess we'll see what
the next couple of days

Hold for us as far
as food goes

Because that's definitely gonna
be a turning point for us.

Oh, very nice.

I'd forgotten
what it feels like.

The sun feels great.
I'm so happy it came out.

I was starting to get
pretty sad actually.

Morale is now boosted.

I think I'm gonna head down
towards the river

And see if I can't put
some hooks out.

I'm gonna cut some more
of those boughs off

Just for the shelter.

I got some fish hooks
and some fish line,

And I have the little shrew.

Hopefully we have
some kind of luck with fish.

The sun has definitely
not hit this area yet.

I see fish.
It looks like a trout.

The guts are going to be
the best for bait.

With this bright color, too,

I think the fish will be
pretty attracted to that.

I think I could make it
across this log here

And set this in the water.

It is extremely cold.

I just really
don't want to get in that water,

And I'm really worried
that that's gonna happen.

I still see the fish.

They're not getting too spooked
by me so that's pretty good.

We need to check our fish hooks
in the morning

And see if we caught anything.

I need to warm up my toes
because I cannot feel them.

This ice on my feet is literally
the worst, and it hurts.

Hey, I did see some trout.

It was down by that
fallen log.

I'm pretty cold.

Dave: sarah's definitely having
some trouble with the cold.

She's definitely cold a lot.

Coming from montana,
you know,

It's a little bit
of an advantage.

It can be sunny,
it can be snowing,

It can be windy,
and just it's gonna

Constantly change,
and it's harsh.

I'm doing everything I can
to keep sarah in the game.

Basically block more of the wind
here with putting this bark.

It'll help keep
more heat inside.

I'm just really cold
still.

The cold isn't a physical thing.
The cold is a mental thing.

Yeah, I was homeless
a lot growing up,

Most of my childhood.
Uh-huh.

That's pretty crazy.

I'm not liking it
because it reminds me

A lot of being homeless.

And it feels like
there's a storm rolling in.

Sarah: I'm very upset
with myself

For leaving my partner,
dave, behind.

I know it will be
difficult for him.

Narrator: sarah is experiencing
extreme muscle pain

From shivering and remaining
huddled in place for hours.

She has also burned
through 15,000 calories

Trying to stay warm.

And although she's
not hypothermic,

She can no longer endure
the freezing temperatures.

Her psr drops from 6.3 to 5.1

Sarah: I was expecting
this challenge to be cold.

I just greatly underestimated
how cold it was gonna be

And how difficult it was gonna
be on me physically.

I feel pretty disappointed
in myself.

I really wanted to prove
how strong I am

By completing this challenge.

Obviously, I stand in a pretty
weak moment in my life.

And hopefully in the future,
I can look back

And reflect on this moment
and see how far I've come.

Dave: unfortunately,
sarah tapped out this morning,

So I'm out here by myself now.

I don't know what it was.
She just couldn't get warm.

She couldn't really adapt
to the cold.

I'm no stranger to cold.
I'm no stranger to pain.

I never really had the motive
to ever quit anything,

So when I have a goal,
I always intend to reach it.

I've just got to take it
one day at a time.

I've got to think strategically
on what I can

And can't waste energy
and time on.

As long as I can stay warm
for the most part,

I should be fine.

Waited until the sun came out
and really get up

So things warm up.

Because I don't want to get up
and walk around in the cold

And burn more calories.

With my partner leaving early,

There's just
a lot more work now.

I've still got to fortify
the shelter,

I've still got to get more
firewood,

Get more tinder and everything.

I got to take definitely
advantage of the sun, you know,

Because once night falls,
that's when it gets cold.

his shelter with tree bark

And adding a large pine tree
in front to block the wind.

Dave: fortunately,
today was a little warmer,

So I just didn't really see
a big need for my pelt.

Tomorrow, my plan
is to venture out more

And try and find some food.

It's looking good, man.

whatever you want to call it.

All my extra wood
all lined up around me.

Fire is going.
Water is boiling.

Blocked the door a little bit
with a little tree I cut up.

Looks like it was just
hobbling around.

Walked right through here.

Being not even 15 feet
from the shelter,

There's actually elk droppings
all over the place.

I wouldn't want to run into
an elk or a moose on a bad day

Because, quite frankly,

I don't want to get stomped out
by a giant animal.

My biggest priority next
is foraging for food.

I want to at least get some meat
or rabbit or even a squirrel.

I should probably make
a quick spear.

For the most part, I feel pretty
good surviving in the snow.

I feel like, you know,
the knowledge I have

And my mental
and physical skills

Will pay off out here.

With the sun reflecting
off the snow,

There's been a lot of glare.

It's wise actually putting
like charcoal under my eyes

To help prevent snow blindness.

The landscape has changed a bit.

Some of the snow has, you know,

Disappeared only
because of the sun.

It won't stay like that.
It's probably getting ready

For a storm
to come in, you know.

I know the cold
is gonna come back.

I've got to take advantage
of this landscape.

I'm just looking for
any kind of food right now.

These are eggs.
I'm not sure what they are.

I'm not gonna eat it
if I don't know it.

It's all wet and rotten.

This is juniper.

They're just really bitter.

I think I'm just
burning more calories

Trying to chew them than
I'm getting from them.

So, I'm just gonna
swallow them.

I'm gonna probably work
my way back around,

Check out the creek,
check out the fish hooks

That sarah set up
the day before.

I don't even know
where the fishing lines are.

I remember she said
something about

There's a log she crossed

And she maybe put
the line in there.

I've got no clue
where she put that line.

Oh, yeah.
There's trout in there.

One, two, three, four,
five other shadows.

All these trout,
and I'm sitting here

Like a peasant with no food.

Oh, man.
Probably just running on fat now

And I'm burning
through my reserves.

Clearly,
I don't have a lot of that.

When I first started, I had like
this own little personal

Heater of mine
that would turn on,

But it's getting
to the point where

It's not functioning
that great.

Narrator: dave has been burning
over 9,000 calories per day,

And the loss of energy

Combined with prolonged exposure
to the cold

Is making it harder for his body

To maintain
its core temperature.

That hurt.
I'm so like lethargic today.

I don't know where
she's *bleep* put them.

I need to find those hooks.

Damn it.

I'm gonna starve
if I can't find them.

Look at this.

If this is edible,
I can have all of this.

That's like two pounds.

I want to say
these are oyster mushrooms,

I'm just not positive on it,
so...

Sarah knew a lot about plants.
Definitely more than me.

So I'm definitely gonna miss
that knowledge about her.

These look just like them.

I'm gonna rub them
on my skin first

And see if there's
any irritation at all.

If there's not,
I'll move it to my lips.

I'll chew it up.
I'll spit it out.

There's so many of them
out there that look alike

And, you know, one is edible,
one is poisonous.

This is life or death
right here.

If it's edible I eat it.
It's good.

If it's not,
then I possibly die.

But I do need more calories.

I've got nothing.
