Matt: brooke just caught
a rattlesnake.

Thought I'd do a little snake
wrangling to get prepared

For 21 days in africa.

Naked, not afraid, and...

Maybe a little afraid.

My husband, matt wright,

Has been on
"naked and afraid" twice.

Ahhhhhh!

I'm tired of looking
at his satchel and,

Frankly, smelling it.

I would love the opportunity to
get out there and have my own.

Yee-haw!

Whoo!

My name's dylan mcwilliams.

I'm from grand junction,
colorado.

I'm 20 years old.

Most people know me as the guy
who was bit by a bear,

A shark, and a rattlesnake.

Reporter: he woke up with
his head in a bear's mouth.

A bear had ahold of my head
and was dragging me.

The bear let off 'cause
I was punching him

In the face
and poking his eyes.

I don't think he liked that
too much.

Reporter #2: a surf vacation
for dylan mcwilliams

Suddenly turned into
a life-or-death struggle.

Dylan: something hit my leg
pretty hard,

And then I saw
a shark underneath me.

Reporter #2: mcwilliams says a
6-foot tiger shark bit his leg.

Dylan: the shark kind of just
grabbed like that.

"Gish!"

Reporter: three years ago,
dylan mcwilliams

Was also bitten
by a rattlesnake.

The odds of that happening
to one person

Is 893 quadrillion to 1.

Surviving in africa

Where there's lions
and crocodiles and leopards --

What am I thinking?
Why am I doing this?

It's mind-blowing.

I'm coming, africa!

-We got to get to water.
-Almost there.

I got a bad feeling about this.

-Whoo!

Man #2: holy hell.

-We got this.

Woman: this is the hardest thing
I've ever done.

This place is wild.

This place is untamed.

Narrator:
deep in the most isolated fringe
of africa lies mozambique.

The region of bungue
is untouched by man.

It is barren, hostile,
unforgiving.

Noticing a lot of bones
and animal tracks,

And that means there's gonna
be a lot of predators

Out here
hunting all the small game,

And we're definitely not
the top of the food chain.

We're probably one of
the lowest things out here.

That means we're gonna
be hunted, too.

Narrator:
lions roam freely here,

And ambush is their
preferred method of attack.

This vast expanse is populated
by spitting cobra,

Which fire their venom
from 12 feet away.

The area swarms
with black mambas,

The deadliest snake in africa.

Predators in this region
have never seen humans

And are extremely
unpredictable.

Brooke: never can you
take your guard down

In this type of environment

Because you might become
their next meal.

I'm quite literally taking
my a*s out for a walk.

I'm a competitor.

My donkey and I do
these trail-running races

That put ultrarunning marathons
to shame.

I'm an experienced hunter.

Matt:
good job, babe!

Prairie dog down!

Matt and I -- we have
competitions about hunting,

And I can guarantee you that
there's more meat in our freezer

With my name on it
than with his.

I'm a colorado cowgirl,

I'm a huntress, and I'm
a second-degree black belt.

Ah!

Brooke:
matt has been a tremendous asset

To me getting ready
for this challenge.

I would highly suggest
you eat some bugs.

Okay.

Everything that he has learned,
he has taught me.

Gonna come back around

And get stuck
in this whole fish-trap setup.

This right here is
a brain-tanned impala

That I tanned
while butt-naked in africa.

I will cut it up,

And I'm gonna reinforce
your quiver with it

So that
while you're out there,

You carry a little
of my success

And a little part of me
with the impala hide.

I am ready to take on africa.

This is my opportunity to show
matt that I'm his equal.

He can rely on me just as much
as I can rely on him

In any type of situation.

Dylan:
it's pretty wild out here.

I've never been to
a more wild place.

Probably a lot of this place,
nobody's ever been.

It's kind of scary.

I'd describe myself
as a daredevil.

Man: oh!

Dylan:
I teach wilderness survival.

I'm also a rancher.

I've been hunting since,
like, 6.

I'm taking on this challenge
to be the youngest person

To ever try it
and complete it.

If I can survive
a rattlesnake bite,

Shark bite, and a bear attack,

I can survive
pretty much anything.

Well, this is the part
I've been dreading the most --

Taking the clothes off.

Dylan: the worst.

It's like ripping
a band-aid off.

Just do it.

Okay, africa, let's do this.

Oh, man, unbelievable.

Look at this elephant bone.

Obviously, a lot of death
around here, so...

Narrator: dylan enters with
confidence, having survived

Three brutal
animal attacks,

But his youth may hold him back
in this unfamiliar environment.

He begins with a psr of 6.3.

I'm trying to keep my eyes open
for venomous snakes

That I know will lurk about.

brooke comes to mozambique

With extensive
survival knowledge,

But she's also used to working
with her husband

And may struggle
without his expertise.

Her initial psr is 6.4.

Dylan: being naked out here
is kind of awkward for me.

Dylan: I've never really walked
around anywhere naked.

I immediately noticed
that he's young.

I'm brooke.
-I'm dylan.

Brooke: it is incredibly awkward
to meet someone

Who's not your husband

That is naked
for the first time.

What's your
survival experience?

I've been hunting
and living in the woods

Since I could walk
pretty much, so...

-Okay.
-Yeah.

My husband and I

Actually teach
survival classes, so...

-That's awesome.
-Yeah.

I teach
wilderness survival, too.

All right. We're gonna make
a good team, then.

-Yeah.
-Looks like these are our bags.

Narrator: brooke and dylan
are given a pot,

A fire starter, and a knife.

Even though they are
elite hunters,

There are so many
deadly predators here

That they're also given
brooke's longbow and quiver.

I see that
it's left-handed.

It is.

I've been hunting all my life
with a longbow,

And I'm right-handed,
and that's a left-handed bow.

It'll be a challenge.

Hopefully, that's something
you can adapt to...

-Yeah.
-...while we're out here.

-I'll sure try.
-Okay.

I do hope that
she does take me seriously

Even though I am
quite a bit younger than her.

I'll definitely be
taking her seriously.

She's got the bow.

We have the trusty map.
A lot of territory to cover.

Looks like we got to watch out
for a lot of animals --

Snakes, lions, buffalo.

Let's make our way
towards probably

That water source
would be our best bet.

I think we're right here
on top of this mountain,

And I think that the water
is obviously that way.

Okay, we should probably
get a move on.

We are here in the winter,
and so daylight is short.

Let's go.

Okay,
you lead the way.

Sounds good.

There is no human life
for as far as the eye can see.

♪♪

Brooke: huh.
Snakeskin.

Looks to be a black mamba,

Judging by the darkness
of its skin.

Watch for snakes.

Just hope
I don't encounter him.

Narrator:
to get to their water source,

Dylan and brooke must trek
through five miles

Of treacherous,
snake-infested terrain

And contend with
the ever-changing weather.

-It's pretty cold.
-Yeah.

Narrator: in mozambique,
temperatures can rise

To scorching triple digits,

Then plummet into
the low 50s at night,

And high winds
and brittle brush

Make this arid landscape
susceptible

To sudden
and devastating fires.

Dylan: oh.

-It's like those sharp rocks...
-I know.

...just sends, like,
needles in your feet.

Ahhh.

I wish I had leather for feet
right about now.

Oh, shh, shh,
shh, shh, shh.

Dang.
Look at that.

Ugh.
God *bleep*

Hopefully
there's some water

Somewhere
along this dry riverbed.

Ouch.
Really sharp rocks.

Dylan:
there's the water hole.

After walking for five miles,
I'm so happy to see this water.

Brooke:
we found a water source,

Which means we'll be sharing it
with other animals,

Including predators,
and, really, the challenge here

Is gonna be being
close enough to a water source

But also not so close

That predators will have
a higher likelihood

Of wanting to come
through our shelter.

I'm thinking a few hundred feet
or so, you know,

Away from this water is really
gonna be our best option.

Dylan:
what do you think?

Put a beam going across,
down like that,

And then that's where
we do our shelter,

And then we do the boma
all through out here.

Yeah, sounds good.

And then we're close
to the water.

Mm-hmm.

Brooke:
now that we have an easily
accessible water source,

The priority is to get
our shelter set up

And get fire going
for the night.

It's getting late, and we don't
have enough daylight left.

Whoo!

Brooke: huh.
Look at that.

I am glad
that he is willing,

Able, and confident to be
on a tree doing that

'Cause I don't know
that I would be.

I do worry that dylan
is pushing himself

Maybe a little bit too much

Knowing that we've got such
a long journey ahead of us.

♪♪

We're constructing
an a-frame shelter.

If it rains, moisture is gonna
come off the sides.

It's got a pretty steep pitch.

Dylan: the plan is to build
two fires --

One on one side
and one on the other,

And then we'll sleep
in the middle.

It will be nice to have each
our own fire to stay warm.

What I'm just finishing up here
is a reflector wall,

So when we're inside
our shelter,

The fire,
when it's built out here --

The heat will reflect
off the rocks into us.

Now, we got to get to work
on our boma.

A boma is essentially
a thorny perimeter --

Protection against predators
at night.

It's gonna get dark here
pretty soon,

So we want to have a fire
to keep the wild animals away.

Out here, the grass is so dry.

It's really dangerous.

Hopefully it doesn't
keep up this wind.

Brooke: everything can
literally catch fire.

♪♪

Dylan:

Brooke:
this is very scary.

♪♪

Dylan:
I can't sleep at all.

Sunrise can't come
soon enough.

♪♪

I'm gonna go down
and get water.

Thanks, dylan.

Brooke:
last night was very scary.

We heard some noises, and it
sounded almost as if it was,

Like, sort of flanking our area,

And so reinforcing our boma

And making it as safe
as possible.

I want to get as much water
as I can get.

Looky there -- cattails.
See if we can have some food.

Narrator:
cattails are en edible weed

That can be baked or eaten raw

And can be used medicinally.

I got water,
and I've got cattails.

-Awesome!
-We have some food...

-Yay!
-...and some water.

You're looking for that nice
white stalk there.

Very fibery.

It is.

I need some meat.

I want to go hunting,
probably take the bow.

Is that fine?
-Yeah.

Brooke: insertion was grueling
on my feet.

I definitely want to stay
in the boma right now.

Ouch.

Getting up and trying to move

Just even around
our shelter is hard.

Ow, ow, ow, ow, ow!

This ground is just
unrelenting and harsh.

It's not an option to go
another day without shoes,

So I cannibalized
matt's impala hide

That my quiver was wrapped in.

I'm going to make some shoes.

♪♪

Hopefully we can get
a guinea fowl.

Guineas are very tough birds.

You have to hit them just right,

And they're still
gonna take off,

And you're gonna have to
chase them down and catch them.

Dang!

Like...

Ugh.

We're in a horrible spot

'Cause the wind
is blowing my scent

Right into whatever
is over there,

But there's something
moving around over there.

Look at that.

Brooke: usually, the shoulders
and the neck portion

Of an animal
are the toughest skin,

So I used some
of that area of the hide.

High-speed impala shoes --

A little protection
help make me mobile

And not be a prisoner
of the boma.

So a big flock
of guinea fowl came in,

And I was all ready for them,

But something scared them off
out there.

It might be a jackal
or a leopard or something,

But it was something.

I found a masau tree
and a lot of masau fruit.

I'm gonna collect a bunch
and take it back.

Howdy.

How'd it go?

-I got a ton of masau fruit.
-Nice.

Dylan: brooke can't really get
up around and do much

'Cause her feet are
pretty tender out here,

And so I'm kind of the one
doing all the hunting

And the gathering and all that,
and that's fine with me

'Cause that's what
I like to do.

Ooh.
It's like a sweetart.

They'll fill you up,
eventually.

I mean,
it is a pain to pick them

'Cause the tree
is full of spines.

Everything out here
is full of spines, it seems.

Nothing is easy.

I almost had a guinea.

Yeah,
they're a hard target,

Especially when
you're trying to sh**t

with a left-handed bow.

I think they're gonna
do me well,

At least for a little bit.

I am not someone who likes
to just sit around,

And it kind of kills me
a little bit inside

'Cause I want to feel like I'm,
you know, equally contributing.

But I have to wait till
tomorrow, and until then,

I'm gonna try and get
a good night's sleep

And just rest up
as much as I can.

There's a fire.

That was pretty horrible.

Dylan: last night,
our shelter burned down.

We need to be more aware
and more cautious of the fire.

The fire ended up being pretty
big, and it was scary, too,

How close the challenge came
to being over.

Brooke: there was some embers
that popped off one of the logs

And burned me a little bit.

Priority today will be focusing
on rebuilding shelter.

It's so difficult because
we desperately need our shelter

To protect us from the elements
and potential predators,

But our shelter
almost just took us out,

So the key is gonna
be rebuilding

And doing it with
less flammable material

And doing it fast
before something thinks

That we look
like a potential meal.

Start piling it on.

It's well-insulated
with leaves, trees.

Dylan: you got a nice
little grass bed?

Yeah, pretty cozy.

Brooke:
I'm gonna go hunting.

It is crucial that I get a k*ll

Or secure protein here
pretty soon.

I'm gonna make a loincloth.

I'm tired of walking around
and getting my butt

And my junk just scratched up
on all these thorns.

I have a little stomachache.

I'm gonna stick around camp
to rest up.

My a*s is getting scratched.

Yeah, everything
is uncomfortable.

Oh. Swallowed some water,
and like two seconds later,

It, like, all came back up.

Your body has got something,
and it's trying to fight it.

Hopefully this is
just temporary...

...and you just need
some rest.

I was thinking of trying
to drink some water again,

But just the thought of it
makes me nauseous.

Do you want to try?

Yeah,
I'll try a little sip.

Dylan: I had a stomachache
yesterday morning.

I didn't really think
much of it,

But then over the day,
it got a little worse,

And last night,
the pain was, like,

Excruciating in my stomach area.

Brooke: I'm definitely worried
about dylan at this point.

I'm trying to rule out
some of the causes

Of dylan's sickness
right now,

And one of them being
potentially the water.

Have you been swimming
in the water?

Unh-unh.

That's the only thing
different I've done is,

I've gone swimming, like,
a bunch down there.

Did you ingest any of the water
when you were in it?

I'm sure a little bit.

I don't have any signs
and symptoms of being sick,

So I would like to think
that it's not the water

'Cause if it were,

I would probably be experiencing
the same thing as him.

Oh.
Oh, no.

I've never been
so sick, ever.

Dylan:

Brooke: oh.

Oh, man.

Makes me sad.

Oh.

Medic!

Brooke: I'm sorry
you feel this way.

I wish there was something
more I could do.

Oh, man.

Narrator:
dylan has been suffering

From several abdominal pain
for 36 hours.

After seeing him cough up blood,
brooke has called for the medic.

Feeling pretty horrible.

It's just all right in here,
hurts really bad.

Okay.
You didn't hurt yourself?

No.

I took a little sip of water,
and it hurt to swallow.

Mm. Cross your arms

And just try
to sit up without...

Sit, sit up,
sit up, sit up.

Okay, down.

Not helping any?that really hurt.

He's been complaining
of severe abdominal pain.

The water here has a lot
of bacteria in it,

So it's possible that if
he ingested some of that water,

It would have caused
the upset stomach.

From there, it could have
tracked into his lungs.

I think that you have a chance
that there is pneumonia

Caused by bacteria
in the contaminated water.

I just can't do it.

I'm...
Yeah, I'm done.

I'm too weak.

Brooke:
I really don't want him to go,

And I really had hoped
to do this challenge

With my partner for 21 days,

So it's gonna be
an added challenge

Of not having a partner.

Day 6...

I was not expecting
to be the day that I quit.

Oh.

Dylan: being attacked by a bear
and a shark --

Those were all,
like, instant things,

And they were over.

This pain out here just kept
getting worse and worse,

Felt like it never ended.

Narrator: only six days
into the challenge,

Dylan leaves mozambique
15 pounds lighter,

And his psr drops to 5.9.

It's kind of surreal that matt
went through 24 days solo,

This very same continent.

Now, it's my turn --

His solo journey,
my solo journey.

First night alone is scary.

Luckily, I've got a reinforced
boma and a good fire.

Last night was very scary.

Losing my partner sucks.

Very different world out here.

I could become the hunted.

Naturally.

Well, there's always guinea fowl
hiding somewhere.

They just happened
to be right there.

Guineas have amazing vision,
excellent hearing,

But they're extremely tricky
to get close enough to,

So I am setting up
a good blind

Where I can have
good concealment,

So if they do come in
from anywhere up here,

I'll have a good opportunity
to see them,

Have an ideal position
with my bow at a close range,

And I can conserve my energy.

The key to a good blind is
an unobstructed view to sh**t,

And I think it'll work.

Now we wait.

I've been out here
pretty much all day,

Have not seen one animal...

...nothing.

♪♪

Ah.

Cannot wait for the sun
to come up.

Man, when that sun goes down --
cold --

Too cold for a naked person.

Ugh.
I just can't stop shivering.

I hate this feeling.

Narrator: when the body's
core temperature drops,

Its natural defense mechanism
is to shiver to generate heat,

Which can burn 100 calories
in as little as 15 minutes.

Brooke:
I haven't had any protein,

So my body's
definitely feeling that.

Feeling like
I'm letting myself down hunting.

Just throw me a bone.

Throw me a damn bone.

There's some decent-size
fish in here.

God *bleep*.

I haven't had any protein
in 14 days.

Yeah, that's a while for me.

That's probably got to be
a record.

I have to obtain protein
to make it through extraction.

I know it's gonna be
a considerable distance.

Kind of look like
buffalo tracks.

Something's been in here.

No luck -- no birds, no shots,
no signs of birds.

Windier than a son of a b*tch,
as matt would say,

And cold --

Just constantly shivering.

Yeah, I just need a break.

I just need something to give.

On my bow, between the leather
grip here

And this sinew,
there's a little strip

Of what looks to be like
some kind of note or picture.

Curiosity is k*lling me.

Aw! So it's a picture of matt
and our donkey, farnsworth.

It says, "you are strong.
You are fearless.

You are beautiful.

This epic challenge
is what you trained for.

Go out and see the invisible
and do the impossible.

Big-time love
from one savage to another.

I knew that this was my time

And a reason for me
to come out here

And do this myself,
and it's so strange that --

It's such a strange
turn of events

That I actually ended up doing
it solo for many of these days,

And I guess that's what
was meant to be all along.

These birds are k*lling me.

I just -- they really do,

So I just want to k*ll them all
at this point,

Serve them up,
just have a big feast.

I am running on empty.

I'm dying out here.

♪♪

And I don't have
the determination to keep going.

Mozambique is one of the hardest
hunting environments

I have ever been in.

Gonna see if I can't go up,

Sneak up
on some guinea fowl again.

I don't have a whole lot
of energy right now.

It's horrible.

There's two guineas.

They're kind of laying
underneath the tree.

of brooke's boma home-a.

As we enter
this palatial palace,

You'll see I have
a nice fireplace

To keep me warm at night.

I also have a second fireplace

Because who doesn't need
two fireplaces?

Then we have
the master bedroom.

You know,
I've got snacks all the time,

And I found
this nice little monkey skull.

It sort of keeps an eye
on the berry situation.

My door is always open,
except for the evening hours.

It closes at sunset.

So make yourself comfortable

The next time you are near
brooke's boma home-a.

I'm not gonna let any part
of this bird go to waste.

Just pulled it off the fire
after quite a while.

This is a big game-changer
in how I'm feeling right now,

And I get to go to bed
with a full belly.

Now I am ready for extraction.

I have a feeling that extraction
is going to be brutal.

I've got probably
a pretty arduous journey

Ahead of me,
but I didn't make it here

21 Days only to have maybe
some obstacle stand in my way

As I make it out of here, so...

Take a look at where I am
headed to for extraction.

Hmm. Looks like I've got some
pretty serious ground to cover.

Looks like I'm gonna be
crossing a pretty big riverbed,

And my extraction point is
right around this baobab tree.

I've got quite a ways to go.

I can't wait -- cannot wait --

To share
my epic journey with matt.

Narrator:
to make her extraction point,

Brooke will have to traverse

Three miles
of unforgiving terrain.

Puff adders and black mambas
lurk among the jagged rocks,

Lions prowl
for their next meal,

And crocodiles infest the river
brooke must cross.

Only when she reaches
a large baobab tree

Will her journey be complete.

Brooke: ah! Why does it have
to be so cold?

I'm headed over to some of
this really tall grass.

There's critters out here
that I'm not seeing,

But I know they're around.

This is insane.

There might be something there.

Yep, there are predators
lurking about.

The tall grass is the exact
same shade as a lion,

So would I be able to see a lion
in this tall grass?

Probably not.

*Bleep* I need to
get out of here fast.

Ah, looking at...

Can't quite tell,
but lots of green grass,

Which indicates there's probably
some water down there.

My extraction point
is across this riverbed

Off in that direction.

I'm just gonna be as quiet
and smooth about my descent in,

Through, and out of
this riverbed as possible.

From the ground to the trees
to the grass to the animals,

Everything out here is brutal.

Just thorns everywhere.

*Bleep*
ouch.

'Cause anything at any point
in time could ambush me

If it wanted to, and can do so
in a matter of seconds.

Yeah, I see
a gigantic baobab tree.

That is a glorious,
glorious sign.

I've never seen anything
quite so glorious

In my entire damn life.

Yes!

Yes!

I see a ride coming,

And I am -- damn it
if I'm getting on it!

Whoo!

This has been a life-changing
challenge for me, personally.

I was out here 15 days solo.

I knew I could do it,

And I knew matt believed in me.

I wanted to show matt
that I could stand

Shoulder-to-shoulder,
toe-to-toe with him.

I'm very happy with how
I took each day in stride,

And doing it solo shows that
I'm strong enough to do it, too,

Not just mentally
but physically, as well.

That is an experience
that I needed for myself.

Matt will definitely know
that he can rely on me

Just as much as
I can rely on him,

And I'm damn proud of it.

Narrator: over 21 days, brooke
lost a total of 13 pounds.

Her psr rises from 6.4 to 7.1.
