Racing is better with a rival.

And there's been
some real doozies.

Senna versus prost.

Pearson versus petty.

Leno versus allen.

Oh, you pushing me?

I think I pulled something.

but there's one racing rivalry
that is so legendary,

They just made a movie
about it.

We've talked a lot about ford
versus ferrari on this show,

But here's a quick rundown.

Le mans is the world's oldest
endurance sports car race.

With an unprecedented
six consecutive wins

From 1960 to 1965,

Enzo ferrari's team
seemed unbeatable.

Over in america,
henry ford wanted in

And offered enzo $10 million
for half a share

In his italian race car company.

And after nine months
of negotiations,

Ferrari said,
"no grazie!"

Enraged, ford assembled
a dream team to design a car

That would beat the pantalones
off his new nemesis

And put a brash texan
named carroll shelby

In charge of the whole shebang.

A race car driver,
auto designer, and entrepreneur,

Shelby was the kind of man
who could talk a dog

-Off a meat truck.

He convinced legendary driver
ken miles to join ford's crew,

And together,
they unveiled the gt40.

So what happened?

If you don't know by now,
go see the movie.

And here to tell us more is the
actor playing carroll shelby

On the big screen.

this is the first time
in my life I've known someone

Who was made the subject
of a movie

Played by someone I know.

'cause I always wondered
what people thought,

If they really thought
they captured the essence

Of the person in the film.

And you really did.

I knew carroll,
he'd been here many times,

And I really believed you
I mean,

You had the body language.

-Did you ever meet him?
-I never got to meet him.

And christian obviously
never got to meet ken miles,

So it was a lot of watching
old documentaries about them.

You know, this is a project
that's been around

Almost as long as
I've been in hollywood.

Since the '70s,
people have wanted to do

Carroll shelby, ken miles,
the whole story.

It never seemed
to get off the ground.

What made this time different,

-Do you think?
-I was approached

With a much bigger script

With a lot more characters
in it.

It was just too unwieldy
to try to do

In a couple hours, right?

But this script,
the way they boiled it down

To these two guys
and this underdog story

Told through the eyes
of this friendship,

These kinds of guys who were
so different from each other.

I thought you did a great job,

And my biggest fear, I hate
car movies where people go,

"whoaaaa!" you know,
they go off some jump

And it's cgi and I go,
"oh, come on, it's not

The dukes of hazzard,"

Whereas these, the crashes,
nothing looks cgi.

nothing is cgi.

They do it all on camera,
and we had an unbelievable

Second unit team
and really good drivers.

These guys were
a special breed.

They would just get
the biggest engine they could

And put it on the lightest
thing they could find,

-And...
-Right. I asked carroll once

What he didn't like
about enzo ferrari

And he told me
he k*lled too many drivers.

yeah, his nickname
was the assassin, ferrari.

back in those days,

One guy died a week
in professional auto racing.

It was a very dangerous,
scary time.

I mean, the reason they
recruited carroll shelby

Is because he raced there
in '59,

And he was the only guy
they knew, american,

Who'd raced in this
french racetrack

It's not even a racetrack,
it's public roads

In the middle
of the french countryside.

Just the idea of going


Down the mulsanne straight
and not knowing

If you're gonna
be able to stop.

There are stories
from back then

Of guys flipping a car
and fuel dripping on them,

And they're just in
the middle of cow fields,

They're in a pasture, and
nobody's gonna come save 'em.

The gt40 had the fuel lines
going through the doors,

And they're just
waiting for a spark

That's gonna just light them
on fire and k*ll them.

And in fact, one of
the drivers very famously

Started taping a wrench
to his steering wheel

To kind of work his way
out of a situation

If he was jammed in the car,

-Or break a window.
-Break a window, yeah, yeah.

it's still a dangerous sport,
obviously, but not like

-What these guys were doing.
-Right, and also,

They raced for
virtually nothing.

Free tires, gas, and oil!

Oh wow, that's unbelievable.

And that's what professional
sports was back in those days.

It wasn't the big business
it is now.

Did you meet
any members of the family?

no. We talked to some of
the guys who worked with him

Who were on that le mans crew,

And then there was a really
neat thing that happened,

Where some of the drivers' sons
played their dads.

Yeah, well, alex gurney,
he was in there.

Yeah, he played dan gurney,
yeah, exactly.

well, I'll tell you something,
you know,

Carroll shelby's son,

He had these printed up
in memory of his dad.

These are these coins,
he had 300 of these made,

And I think they were so
impressed with your performance,

They asked me
to give you this one.

-Oh, man.
-This is from the family,

And I think it's just
a pretty cool little thing.

It's not available
from the franklin mint,

You can't buy it.

-I couldn't get one.
-Shelby woulda sold it to me,

Wouldn't he?

he was also
a bit of a pt barnum.

He could sell something
like, with these cobras,

He would have one and he'd
repaint it every week

To look like
he had a different car,

was on the car

You know, all those kinda deals.

That's what I loved
about the guy.

The first man to break
the mile-a-minute barrier

Once predicted he would die
in an automobile

Specifically, a mercedes.

Considering how many
racing deaths there were

In the early 20th century,

His prophecy was morbid
but not altogether unlikely.

The belgian racer
camille jenatzy,

Nicknamed the red devil
for the color of his beard

And his trickster personality,

Was a real character.

In 1899, he broke the land
speed record several times

In an electric,
torpedo-like car he called

The jamais contente,

Or "never satisfied."

Over a decade later,
in 1913,

Jenatzy went on a hunting trip
with his friends.

In one of his more idiotic
attempts at humor,

He decided to hide
behind a bush

And imitate a wild,
enraged boar.

He succeeded in
scaring his buddies so much,

They shot him.

Horrified to learn
that the boar was actually him,

They put him in a car and
rushed him to get medical help.

Unfortunately,
he died in the car.

And yes,
it was a mercedes,

Just as he predicted.

an iconic race car.

what we have here is the 1934

Pierson brothers ford coupe.

It was the fastest coupe
in the world.

The pierson brothers
and their engine builder,

Bobby meeks, built this car
and they ran at speeds

That the roadsters
could never dream of.

So that makes this car
really, really historic.

It's the first
of the high-speed coupes.

well, luckily,
this car was found and saved

By one of the great
automotive historians

And enthusiasts.

It's currently on display
at the petersen.

So let's meet bruce meyer.

You got this back in, what,
late '80s, early '90s?

-And at that time,

There wasn't a lot of value
in something like this.

The fellow that owned it,

now, when pierson did this car,

these old race cars

And having the original builders

So both d*ck and bob pierson
were there every day

Because it was a race car,
there was no need for chrome.

This is exactly
the way it was.
