He just never lets up.
- This is pathetic,
I've seen grandmothers run faster than this!
- [Adam] Why do we have to be punished
for every little slip-up,
and why does he write us off all the time?

otherwise you'll run all the way back!

had ever been on a board before.

- Even the actual surfing's become a drag.

- Well, the tracks do get a little indistinct at times,

- There's water and about fifteen kilos of dead weight
for you to carry, just to make it interesting for ya.
- That's ridiculous, you can't expect us to carry a load
like this in this heat.
- Well, it's up to you, but
there's three points to your interview tally
if you get up the top in under four hours.
- Oh, well, I guess that's an incentive.
- But both members of the team have to finish.
And your packs will be weighed at the end
just to make sure no one's been tempted
to lighten the load on the way up.

- Every day for four weeks now,
you've ground us into the dirt.
I mean, hard training is one thing.
But you've just abused everyone, it's been totally unfair.

anywhere on the planet.

- [Garry] Bec followed all of you every step of the way.

- There was also a phone in the bottom of every bag.
If any of you stopped for more than seven minutes,
we would've called you.
- Fortunately, you're a hardy lot and you kept up the pace.
- Yeah, well it was still a crazy thing to do.
I mean, those tracks were dangerous.
- They were tough, but they weren't dangerous.
Bec and I walked all three last week to plot the routes.
- Admittedly, it wasn't degree heat,
and we weren't carrying kilos.
- So you prepared.
But I still think it was a totally pointless exercise.
And it does not excuse the way you've treated us
for the last month.
- You're right, it doesn't.
Come on down, you lot,
that way I won't have to shout
to make sure you hear everything.
(slinky upright bass music)
- Now you've all heard Adam say that we've been
driving you too hard.
Well.
He was right.
- The object of these last few weeks was to determine
whether or not you really wanted to be here.
- Yeah, not just kind of want it, but really want it.
- And in order to do that, we had to push you
to the limit.
Sometimes beyond the limit.
- Now, when you got here I told you
that if you wanted to get to the top,
you have to be totally committed.
- So let me get this right,
you're saying that so far, this has been like a test?
- That's right.
- And the great thing is, you've all passed.
No matter what we threw at you,
you took it and bounced back.
- And the other great thing is,
as from now, we'll be backing off.
School starts next week,
so training will become a part of life,
not your whole life.
At least for those who still wanna stay.
- Which brings us back to you, Adam.
You've come through the toughest part.
But if you still have doubts, and you don't wanna go on,
we will respect your decision.
- And by the way, mate,
we actually would like you to stay.
- Have a think about it overnight.

- The thing that had angered me most about the last month
was not knowing why Garry pushed us so hard.
Now I understand things, and somehow it seems
a lot easier to take.
Maybe that's all we need sometimes.

- Yeah, well, I was going to.
But then I remembered that yesterday
I did this really big favor for someone.
- Like, hiking up some horrible mountain

And if I leave then I'll never find out what that might be.
- And that would be a shame.
- That's what I thought.
- For what it's worth,
I think you've made the right decision.
- Well, if I haven't, then one of us
is in for a seriously hard time.
