'Cause this is supposed to be a training session.

Now I'm gonna be in your ear,

working on your technique all right?

- But look at those waves.

Can't we forget training and practice on our free surfing?

- How can I put this?

- Life's tough sometimes, isn't it.

- Cheer up mate.

- Don't worry, you'll get your go.

- Hah. - Let's do it.

- Brooke doesn't know what she's missing out on.

- Bet Eric's spewing.

- (sighing) I bet they're hitting the surf right about now.

Aah, I can see it, a slight offshore breeze,

perfect barrels rolling in,

conditions you can only dream about.

- Eric. (puffing)

Don't think about it.

- Brooke's right, you're just making things worse

for yourself.

- I don't see how. - Just, finish the assignment

and then it's done.

- That's much of an incentive.

- Well, how about I put your favorite cereal

on the shopping list.

- Ah, thanks for trying.

- (laughing) I'll see you in a couple of hours.

- See ya. - I'll still be doing

my geography assignment. - Bye.

- Okay, question eight explain how waves are formed?

Waves are formed by a moving ridge between two troughs.

Nah, waves are formed and then we surf them.

What do you reckon?

- You go, I wanna get this finished.

Okay, now you're being really annoying.

- Come on, you need a break.

Look at you, you're all hunched.

It's not good for you.

- Eric. - At least come

and have a look outside, hey.

Look at that.

Look at it, the ocean is providing us

with some excellent waves.

Imagine it, a gentle offshore breeze wafts over you

as you paddle out.

A set forms, and then out of nowhere the perfect wave.

- Crying out to be surfed.

- Exactly!

- Like I said, I wanna finish my assignment.

- I do too, Brooke, I do too.

But as Simo will tell you, it's all about balance.

- Balance?

- Yep, balance, come on,

it's a scientific fact exercise invigorates the mind.

We'll come back feeling refreshed and focused.

- I'm not stopping you.

- I know, but I want you to come and it'd be more fun.

- You want me to come so you don't feel so guilty

about not doing your assignment.

- Okay, that too.

But half an hour of pure adrenaline,

we'll come back plenty of time to finish the assignment,

no distractions.

- My only distraction is you.

Ah, ha (gasping)

- Yeah, come on.

- Ow. - All right.

- Yeah. - Tell you what,

if only they gave points for wipe outs.

- Pretty good one hey.

- Oh, spectacular.

- Ah, that was awesome.

Even with Simo in my ear.

- Hey, pearls of wisdom, every word.

- And there were a lot of words.

- You just make sure you remember them.

- Yeah, wasn't it, don't fall off your board.

- Huh, pity you missed out mate.

- Oh well, those are the breaks huh.

- Yeah, and they were.

Huge left handers.

- Massive barrels.

- Hey where's Brooke?

- Erm, she's in her room.

- Probably just adding some fancy finishing touches

to her assignment.

- Why settle for an A when you can get an A plus.

- Not exactly.

And then she wiped out badly.

Now, she says she's okay but, nah I just wanted to be sure.

(gentle music)

- Hey, look at you, you slacker.

- Pretty embarrassing huh.

- Could be worse.

As long as you're okay.

- It only hurts when I laugh.

- Woo, what are you doing?

- I've gotta finish my assignment.

It's due tomorrow.

- Forget the assignment.

Ask for an extension.

- And ruin my perfect record.

Besides I only have to type up the conclusion.

- No no no no, you stay here, I'll finish it Brooke.

- Eric. - What?

Come on, I can help you.

I'm just gonna type up your notes don't I?

- Are you sure you don't mind?

- Yeah, consider me your personal sl*ve.

- Thanks. - The least I can do.

- It was pretty sore last night,

but I'm actually feeling pretty good this morning.

about your assignment, it's all done, on your desk.

- Really?

- I proofread it last night.

It's good.

- Well thanks, both of you.

- No worries.

- Give me a minute, I'll meet you down there.

- Are you sure you're up for it?

- Yeah, maybe you should take it easy today, Brookey.

- Ah, the surf will do me good.

(light music)

(water gurgling)

(Brooke gasping)

- Brooke!

Are you all right?

- My back. - What happened?

- I did a dive and I pulled something.

- [Eric] Can you straighten up?

- I'll go and get someone.

- No, there's no need.

It's just muscle strain. - Brooke,

you're obviously in pain.

- Which will go away in a few minutes.

You know what Simo's like.

He'll make a big deal out of it.

Rest, massage. - More rest,

special exercises. - Yeah, and before you know it

I'll be missing the surf contest this weekend.

- Maybe you should. - I can't.

I need the points.

We all do.

This is our little secret.

(people chattering)

- Brooke you have to get that seen to.

- It's not so bad.

- Then why are you hobbling around like that?

- You should see a doctor today.

- I can't today, we've got training.

Simo's gonna know if I'm not there.

- Simo's gonna know if you're hobbling

around like a peg leg.

- So what am I gonna do?

- See a doctor.

- But Simo.

- We'll cover for you.

- What are you gonna say?

- You got detention.

- Never! - But everybody gets

detention once in a while.

- Actually, they don't.

- Really? - Especially not me.

- Well, we'll think of something.

- I don't think she's gonna go.

- I bet she will.

I'll make sure of it.

- Okay, now we just have to make a cover story

for both of you.

- This exercise is good for flexibility and balance.

Has anyone seen Rachel and Brooke?

- Dance class. - Dentist.

- So which is it?

- Erm, they had to go to dance class

and then to the dentist.

- Both of them?

- Well, I mean it was nothing serious.

It was just erm, the usual, six month checkup.

- You seem to know a fair bit about it.

- Yeah, well I overheard them,

you know, it sounded funny, dancing dentists. (laughing)

- I'm surprised no one else said anything.

- Simo, is that enough warm up?

Hanging for a surf.

- Yeah. - Well.

- No, I want more.

- Agh. - Let's go.

- Remind me to never get you to cover for me.

- What do you mean, it was Amy who almost blew it!

- What did the doctor say?

- Not much.

She's referred me to a specialist.

- A specialist? - She thinks I might've

damaged something.

- What? - She doesn't know.

That's why she's referred me to a specialist.

- When are you going?

- I'm not.

- Brooke. - It's okay,

I'm feeling much better anyway.

Come on, I'll shout you a milkshake.

- Brooke, this is silly.

- I know what I'm doing.

- Isn't it better to know what's going on?

- Not now.

In this case, it's better to not know.

- What? - We're six weeks

out from the finals.

I can't get behind on points now

or I'll miss surf off!

- But what if it's serious?

- Plenty of sports people carry injuries.

And if I surf really well in the contest this weekend--

- You're not gonna compete this weekend.

- I don't have a choice do I?

The rest of my life depends on it.

- Rachel told me you were competing on the weekend.

- Is there a problem with that?

- The problem is you're not fit.

- (sighing) I'm living with a bunch of 'nanas.

- We care about what happens to you.

- And I appreciate it, really, I do,

but I'll be fine.

- Yeah, if you surf well.

But what if I b*mb out?

- Me, never. - think about it Brooke.

You're carrying an injury, which will make it easier

to make a mistake.

You could end up worse than you are now.

- What if the specialist says that I can't compete at all?

Then I'm as good as finished.

The whole year would've gone down the drain for nothing.

I'm not gonna let that happen Mike.

And neither would you.

- Brooke's determined to compete.

So it's up to us to help her through.

- How? - Has everyone heard of RICE?

- Yeah, I prefer pasta. (laughing)

- No, RICE, R-I-C-E, you know,

what you do to treat an injury.

- Oh yeah, yeah, RICE yeah, rest, something compression,

elevation, forgot what the I stands for.

(laughing)

- Does Brooke know what you've got planned.

- Not exactly.

Corey, Eric and I are gonna get what we need.

You and Rach make sure she's ready for it.

- No worries, you can count on us.

- [Mike] Excellent, come on guys.

- It's rest, compression-- - Yeah, come on.

- Where are we going?

- The petrol station.

- Ah, now I remember what the I stands for.

(brakes squeaking) (wheels skidding)

- How many bags do you think we'll need?

- As many as we can carry.

Load 'em up!

♪ Teacher teacher, please watch yourself ♪

- Okay, so what's the surprise?

- We've decided,

you won't help yourself we'll do it for you.

- So we've prepared a method to help treat your injury.

- Used by sports people the world over.

- What method?

- This method.

- Oh no. - Oh yes.

- No I know how penguins feel.

- It's just a couple more minutes.

- Forget back pain, I'm gonna die of hyperthermia.

- We just trying to take the edge off the pain.

- And speed up the recovery process.

Then we can start with the ice packs.

- Drink? - Oh, thank-you.

(ice crinkling)

(drink fizzing)

- Hi girls. - Hi.

- Teeth okay?

- Fine. - What about a dance class?

Learn any new steps?

- Not really.

- 'Cause I think there's been a bit

of tap dancing going on around here.

We've got a surf comp this weekend

so let's get on with it shall we?

- Yeah, good idea Simo.

- Oh no no no, no no, not so fast.

We've got a lot of work to do first.

Let's start with some strengthening exercises shall we?

(door knocking) - Brooke,

are you gonna be long?

Brooke?

- Coming.

It's all yours.

- She's covering, I know it. - She was pushing pretty hard

at training. - Yeah, trying to prove

she's fit for this weekend. - Well, it's mad.

She could get really hurt.

Why risk it?

- No offense but I think we all know the answer to that.

Put yourself in Brooke's position.

She's worked hard all year, and then one injury,

that's it.

- Not necessarily.

Athletes get injured all the time and make comebacks.

- Sure, but how many of them get sponsorship deals

while they're recovering?

- And get picked up by Solar Blue,

and tour the world circuit.

- If I was in Brooke's position,

I'd do exactly the same thing.

- No, I get it Ame's I do, but

what if her injuries get worse and not better?

- That's her choice.

- I don't think it is.

- How do you figure that?

- Because we know.

And if she competes and something happens,

it's on all of our heads.

I just wish I'd finished my stupid assignment.

- Eric, it's not your fault.

- Yeah, I was the one that talked her into having a surf.

I have to talk to Simo.

- No way!

- Who else is gonna make her see a specialist?

- If you go behind Brooke's back,

she will never forgive you.

- I know.

But if I don't, I'll never forgive myself.

- Eric, wait.

What if Brooke does compete on the weekend

and get good points?

What if it is just a little strain?

What if she gets better by herself?

- A lot of what ifs.

- Well, here's another one.

What if you tell Simo, and he doesn't let her compete

on the weekend,

who's to say she won't get better on her own?

♪ There's no water holes inside ♪

(telephone ringing) - Hello.

Yes, speaking. - What's the right thing

to do Eric? - Sure.

- It's the right thing to do.

It's the right thing to do? - What is?

- [Simon] Of course what can I do for you?

- You were gonna tell Simo weren't you?

Eric! - I don't have a choice!

Unless you go and see a specialist.

- Don't worry, I'm fine.

- No, you're not.

Or at least you don't know if you are or not.

And that's the thing, we have to find out.

- What if it's bad?

Like seriously.

- Then, we'll talk to Simo and work something out.

- Simo? - Surfers get injured

all the time, Brookey, Simo knows that

and he wants you to make the finals as much as you do.

- I know. - Then you're gonna have

to trust him. - Yeah, I'll let you know.

- You can knock on the door and tell him right now.

- I remember what happened the last time

I let you talk me into something.

- So do I.

It was the mother of all wipe outs.

- Right, just the two I want to speak to.

I've had a call from the school.

A Mr. Harris, your geography teacher I believe.

- That's right. = he'd like to see you

in his office in the morning before school.

- Sure, no problem.

- So I asked him if there was anything

that would concern me.

- He said your assignments drew

remarkably similar conclusions.

- How do you mean?

- So similar in fact that they were identical.

- Eric!

What did you do?

- I think it's pretty clear.

Eric copied your work.

- What, no no I didn't!

- You might think this is clever.

I call it cheating.

- But Simo-- - You've been sailing

so close to the edge with your school work all year.

Now you've pushed your luck a little bit too far.

- I didn't copy her.

She copied mine!

- Well, well, no I copied mine into hers.

- Eric-- - It's true.

I said I'd type her assignment,

but but but it was too long so I pasted mine in.

- Save it for Mr. Harris.

You just lost points.

- ! - five for cheating,

five for lying. - But, I--

- Simo stop, Eric's not lying.

It's not his fault.

He was just trying to help me.

(light music) - Go on.

- There's something you should know.

Lumbar muscle strain.

It doesn't show up on the x-ray.

- (laughing) So what am I looking at?

- Well I just think it's cool.

That's me, from the inside.

- Right.

- So how do you fix it?

- Er, a course of anti-inflammatories,

gentle exercise and rest.

- What about surfing?

- Not for two weeks.

- Two weeks. - That's all right.

Could've been a lot worse, especially if left untreated.

- Yeah, yeah, two weeks that's not so bad.

Think of all the DVDs you'll catch up on.

- I know what you're thinking Brooke.

Love to be competing.

Instead you've gotta rest.

- How am I gonna make up the points?

- You've still got time.

- It'll need for everything to go right.

What are the odds of that?

- At least you've still got a chance.

If you had've been stupid enough to compete

this weekend you never would've gone through.

- I don't know that I can make it.

- I'll level with you.

It won't be easy.

But if you're as a surfer as I think you are,

you can do it.

- You're just saying that to make me feel good.

- Look over there.

You've got to ask yourself, how much you want it.

- More than anything. - That's your answer.

If you're gonna beat Rachel and Amy,

you need to be completely fit.

Then, you have to work harder

than you've ever worked before.

(horn blowing) - Semi-finals are on the way.

- Excuse, me, I've been thinking

and there's an upside to this whole assignment thing.

- What? - What.

Mr. Harris thought I'd copied you.

And that must mean my work was pretty good.

- It was just a conclusion-- - it must mean my work

was at a premium level. - No, it means--

- It must mean that I'm smart, like as smart as you.

Think about it.

(horn blowing) (audience clapping)

- First heat for the boys coming up.

So surfers please assemble at the marshaling area.

- Hi. - Hi.

Thanks.

This is weird isn't it.

What is? - This.

I never thought I'd be a spectator.

It sucks.

If I had my way, this will be

the last contest I ever sit out.
