I found out after the game.

To know that happened to my mom
is a little unsettling.

I gotta work. I gotta do my job
and go play basketball, etc.

But I wanna know my family
and stuff is safe when they're away.

Knowing that somebody can get that close
to harm my mother or something like that…

You know, something terrible could happen.

In January, we'll go full force

is involved in a lot of stuff I do.

She is like

the backbone of my operation.

Young Jaylen asked a lot of questions.

He was always curious.

He always, you know,
had a thirst for knowledge.

Raised them to be very independent-minded.

Bringing opinions to the table,

and sometimes you may have
to fight to get others to hear them.

People aren't always, uh,
an advocate of you speaking your mind.

[Brown] Very… This is my first time here.

-[woman] Do you live in Boston?
-I live in Boston now.

I've been living there
for the last almost ten years.

-[woman] Okay.
-But I'm from Georgia originally.

-And then I went to school in Berkeley.
-[woman] Okay.

[Brown] You know,
Oakland, Berkeley, second home.

I lived on campus on Shattuck Avenue,

being able to get immersed
in the Oakland/Berkeley community.

I didn't know they moved
to, uh… to Shattuck Avenue in Berkeley.

That's crazy.

The headquarters moved to Shattuck Ave.

A lot of super influential
human rights activists

have, you know, spent time in this area
throughout history.

So for me to be able
to go to college in that area,

I learned about all of this, and then,
uh, it aligned, like, with my spirit.

This isn't just fiction. This is reality.

You know,
lot of people have a hard time seeing

that climate change is affecting
our day-to-day lives.

They see it as something distant.

But the reality
that climate change is already here.

My grandmother taught me
the importance of education.

She also taught me
the importance of recycling.

Our air, our oceans, our forests
are already being compromised.

These aren't just social media events.

We've already seen
the… the fires in California

to the hurricanes in the Caribbean,
you know.

If you haven't gotten involved
in your community and environment,

this speech is your cue.

If Jaylen walked into a place where
everybody's walking through the red door,

but he thinks
the blue door is the way to go,

he's gonna walk through the blue door.

I think a lot of people don't like that.

When he first came into the NBA,

I had a story about
how people thought he was too smart.

Like, he had other interests.

Who gets chastised for that?

[Mechalle] Why was he "too smart"?

It kind of breaks down to them
not knowing the kind of person he was

and not knowing his family background.

We were independent thinkers.

You know, NBA player or athlete,
that wasn't my focus.

The thing I'm most proud about
for both my children

is that I raised them to be good people.

I just see these two little boys
who have grown into great human beings.

And I'm honored to be their mother.

-How well-behaved we were growing up?
-No, I didn't say that.

I've been the CEO and the CFO.

You know, it's a part of my… my DNA.

It's a part of my job description
to help find those solutions

in order for players to feel
more empowered in this generation

and the next.

[Brown] A lot of times,
people love to take advantage of athletes.

A lot of athletes
where, you know, silently,

behind closed doors, they suffer

because they feel like
their input isn't… isn't being respected.

I've had brands hang up the phone

uh, when I've asked them about, uh,
just if I could have input creatively.

It makes you feel, uh…
it's like you're being controlled.

A lot of these brands is
not giving you nothing anyway.

But you sign to them,

you're giving them influence
by wearing their sneaker on the court.

Imagine you could wear your own stuff.

If we kind of decentralize
our… our value in the shoe industry,

I think we'll see the value
of players start to rise and go up.

I think it's paramount for me
to be able to tell the story

and explain to the next athlete
how you can do it too.

[Harden] Back then wasn't like that.

You didn't really see
a lot of guys getting their own sneaker.

Players are getting smarter,

uh, creating their own way
of how they want it to look.

[Haliburton] I rock with them just because
they're different. I like creativity.

I like things
that don't look like everything else.

And I feel like he did a really good job
of creating an original silhouette.

And something that
when you see, automatically,

are like, "Oh, that's JB's."

such a reflection of his personality,

meaning being innovative,
being a reflection of the future, knowing,

In spite of how I was feeling as a woman.

As a young woman
with so much responsibility,

and wanting to quit
and just check out on life,

I sacrificed that so my sons could live.

When something good happens to you,

but I tend to look back

to what brought me here.

And

you wake me up in the middle of the night
in the summertimes

making me run up a hill,

Put clothes on our backs,
food on the table.

When you didn't eat, you made sure we ate.

And then we would dump it in,

of powdered sugar in there.
