these conspiracy theories,

it separates you from society.

You think that your friends
and family would be happy

to find out
that they've been lied to,

but instead, they turn on you.

- Rosanne felt like
a failure to launch.

I think she just found
in QAnon a purpose.

It was gonna be an opportunity
to be a part of something huge.

- I have always been interested
in why people believe

in conspiracy theories
because I understand firsthand.

It was totally intoxicating.

- What bothers me
is my family.

I don't think
they think I'm crazy,

but they think that
the things I do are crazy.

- This is not
a viral pandemic.

This is a fear pandemic.

It has been hard
with my children.

I hope that someday
my daughter will appreciate

how I'm trying to fight
for her.

- Yeah, I've lost lots
of supposed friends.

Over and over again,
"What's happened to you?"

My mother said
she "disagrees with me,"

but she hasn't read anything
that I've read

and she doesn't know
what the f*ck

she's disagreeing with.

- It's almost biblical,
where they talk about

how family--brother
would turn against brother,

father against son.

- Very little.

[tearfully]
And I don't know whether

I'm gonna ever have
a good relationship

with him again.

- We are at my apartment
in Brooklyn, New York.

This is where I work
from home,

often, like, crunched up
on the couch.

[soft orchestral music]

Right now, the story
that I am looking into

is a story about marriages
or other familial relationships

where one person is, like,

pretty deep down
the conspiracy rabbit hole

and the other person isn't.

- My relationship with [bleep]

has become
completely estranged

in the last year.

She's watching YouTube videos.

I mean,
she's just getting funneled

down that algorithm, right?

Like, to more and more kind of
radical, bizarre things.

- It's not just, like,
a funny conspiracy theory

that unicorns
and bigfoot is real.

They've been
almost indoctrinated in.

And they're, like, set
in this core beliefs.

It's exactly like a cult.

You know, and they, like,
drink the Kool-Aid.

- It was like watching [bleep]
become another person.

And the way he treated me
and how vastly it changed

from him loving me and thinking
I was wonderful to...

Hating seemingly everything
about me.

- It's easier
to feel angry at her

than it is to start thinking
about how much I miss her.

[keyboard clicking]

- All of these changes
kind of exist on a spectrum.

And we're all changing
all the time,

and especially now

in the informational
environment that we're in,

people change
their perspective on the world.

A lot is happening.

And what do you do

if the person you thought
you married wakes up one day

and has a different opinion
than you

about something
really important

and really serious?

[somber music]

- Tomorrow, would've been
married for 18 years.

But we were together
for 22 years.

So this is actually
my favorite picture

from our wedding.

Um,
it was our first dance after.

This was our rehearsal supper.

I was 23. He was 25.

[sniffles]

Um...

that was a really great day.

[sniffles]

He didn't say "I do."

He said "I will always."

He brought a lot of peace...

to my life.

A lot of joy. [cries]

[sighs] I felt very stable

when I was with him.

And that--that all left

once he got into Q
and conspiratorial thinking.

My name is Stephanie.

I'm a CFO

of a local construction
company.

I have two children that...

are characters

that I love,

that make me laugh every day.

Our daughter,
she'll be 15 next month.

Our son just turned seven
in November.

♪ ♪

My ex was very into sports.

He loved the Saints.

Every Sunday was this--
was watching the game,

high-fiving, chest bumping...
[laughing] sometimes

when a play
would be really good.

We were both really
into fantasy football.

I wonder if that experience
of following the backchannels

of the sports world
on message boards

maybe gave some validity
to this stuff for him.

Like, "Ooh,
when I used to follow this"

and they'd have somebody
who was an insider

and they were right sometimes,
you know?

I don't know, it seems like
such a small thing,

but I do remember
that he would buy into that,

you know?

There were never any signs
that things were gonna change.

He was always
very down-to-earth,

and grounded, and fun.

You know, it was never
a thought in my mind

that he would...

delve into that fantasy land,
you know?

♪ ♪

He was never into politics.

But he never had, like, strong
feelings one way or the other,

and I'd probably describe him
before all of this

as fiscally moderate
conservative

and very socially liberal.

I put together a timeline

to show the progression
of his journey

into the rabbit hole.

It was a steady decline,

and then progressed from there,

you know, stranger and stranger

to a point of concern.

Sometime
in the summer of 2020,

he brought up Q
for the first time

and said that he would go
on record

saying Q+
was President Trump himself.

I actually cried myself
to sleep that night.

I mean, I kinda knew
that we may be headed

in a rough direction.

He texted me about
different theories:

world governments falling,
millions of humans trafficked,

our own government k*lling us
off for decades,

9/11 was our government,
Uranium One,

SEAL Team Six, Benghazi,

devil worship,
ritual sacrifice,

adrenochrome,
bioweapons like Covid,

endless wars,
media corruption...

[sighs]
Big Tech, Big Pharma,

"This is what
the Great Awakening is.

"I want a future with you
more than you know,

"but it'll be based
in hard truths and reality,

not some false sense
of security."

I talked a lot to my mom
about what was going on

and she was like, "No. No.

This is--this is too much now."

I contacted his family

and told them
how I was feeling

and said, "At this point,

I gotta do what's best
for me and my kids."

So we tried to have sort of
a little intervention.

And he got very agitated
and angry

when we asked him to limit
his internet and phone usage.

[ominous music]

But then things started
to get a little darker.

My ex was sleeping.

When I came back in,

he was laying under the covers.

It was--no lamps were on.

That door was closed
with the light on,

and he was shivering.

And he was saying that it felt
like he was in an ice castle.

And he asked me to lay
with him.

Uh, so I did.

- I started having
these downloads,

and the first one happened,

and I was laying next
to my wife in bed.

And... [sighs]

All of a sudden,
I--I... [sighs]

I guess you'd call it
a vision.

But you--you were--

you're downloading information
somehow.

Just kinda locked up,
freezing cold,

tears running down the face.

- When somebody starts talking
about having visions

and a calling, and, you know,

if someone's questioning
reality in that way,

is it--is it safe...

for...

children?

He also told me that night
that...

[sighs] The man I fell in love
with was gone...

and that I needed

to decide if I could love
this new person.

Two days later, I left.

With the kids.

♪ ♪

Since I've left,

now I see that the physical
and emotional damage

it was causing was significant

and hard to repair.

This is better
for the children,

to be separated from someone
wrapped up in that world.

I've had some conversations

with other women
in this situation online.

And there is an element
of self-doubt.

You know, I experienced it too.

Like, am I--
I'm overreacting, right?

I mean,
I'm overreacting to this.

It's not that bad.

I'm--I'm being extra.

But as much
as I didn't wanna hear about

these things anymore,

I need to know
when that point comes

that me and my kids
may be in danger.

- Authorities say 40-year-old
surf instructor

Matthew Taylor Coleman

from Santa Barbara,
California,

confessed to murdering
his two-year-old son

and ten-month-old daughter
this week in Mexico,

telling the FBI he was driven
to the killings

after being "enlightened"
by QAnon.

- He allegedly
told authorities

that he believed
that he was saving the world

by preventing his two toddlers

from changing
into serpent monsters.

- In Los Angeles, back--
just this last April,

there was a woman who k*lled
her three children,

also claiming
because she was inspired

by QAnon to protect them
from the global cabal.

- The impacts of all of this
have been different

on each of our children.

Now, my son sleeps
with me every night

and we had a significant issue
with our daughter.

Our daughter told me
that he had her listen

to frequency music,

which she described
as screeching noises,

because he told her
it would k*ll the parasites

in her brain.

[low droning]

Two weeks after that, our
daughter was admitted into...

the hospital...

behavioral unit.

She was hospitalized
for self-harm

and attributes that
to his continued attempts

to indoctrinate her
into this belief system.

I asked him...

what he would do
if a vision led him

to think he had to harm me
and/or the kids to save us.

What if it was framed
in your mind

that you
were actually helping us

by doing that, you know?

"I--I would know
that was wrong," he told me.

But now, I don't know.

And that's just as scary
as saying "Yes," I think.

Just that uncertainty.

to Rachel Bernstein,

a psychotherapist
who specializes

in people who are trying
to leave QAnon

or their family members
who want them to leave QAnon.

- Hi.
- Hi, Rachel.

I'm Ellen. Oh, hello!
- [laughs]

- When did
the conspiracy-thinking part

of your job start cropping up

and, like, how much
of your client base is it now?

- The conspiratorial thinking

started to become more
of my practice

about six years ago.

And I started getting a lot
of calls from people saying,

you know, "My,"
whomever, fill in the blank,

"Is not involved
in a cult per se,

'but it seems like they are.

"They're on the phone all
the time with these people,"

or "They're on the computer
all the time,"

or "They are starting
to speak differently,"

or "They're starting
to put me down in certain ways

"and they're starting
to think things

"that I thought would've seemed
delusional in the past,

"but now they seem factual
to them,

and I'm very concerned."

So yeah, now it is about 50%
of my clientele

and I see, like,


- Wow.
- It's a lot of people.

And they're really difficult
cases.

- What have you seen?

You know,
what happens to people?

- You get a sense right away
that they're ready for battle.

There's this aggressiveness.

There's a need
to prove you wrong.

They're scared.

They really have come
to rely on this

and they've dug their heels in.

They feel like they need it.

Again, because it answers
the unanswerables.

It's sort of their
modern mythology,

and they don't want it
taken away.

- Yeah.

- It becomes their new family.
- Mm-hmm.

- It becomes their way
of relating to the world,

the lens through which
they see the world,

the lens
through which they see you.

- Yeah.

I'm a, uh,
certified union electrician.

On the channel, on the channel.

I do a lot of reading

and I listen
to a lot of podcasts.

- There has always been
a small controlling class

because this controlling class
has this knowledge

of how the human psyche works.

The true intentions
and the true aims

of the institution is control,

which has been running humanity

understand every aspect

of how the human mind works.

They are ancient,
powerful psychologists

who have done their homework
about the human mind

and fully know how
to control the mind.

- It's the same bloodlines
and certain institutions

even though they have morphed
over several centuries

or millennias
for thousands of years.

- Dark occultists
have completely infiltrated

and permeated all
institutional walks of life

on this planet.

- And they're so clever
that you're living

in their system.

They're not living in yours.

You're living in theirs.

You were born into bondage.

- Even government is a--is a--
how would I say?

It's a pro--it's an illusion
of a diseased psyche.

- Everything is false.

Everything is magic.

- Everything is delusion.

And if you don't think so,

well, you're gonna be in
for a rude awakening.

- Unfortunately, most people
are living under lies

and obfuscation.

They're believing
that their perceptions,

which are heavily influenced
and dogmatized

by the media
or other certain think tanks,

are actually truth,

which, unfortunately,
they are not.

That is actually me.

Growing up, unfortunately,
it was a lot like a lot

of other contemporary
American families:

a shattered, broken household.

Growing up
in an a*usive household,

you don't feel like
you're loved.

You feel like
you're being "abandoned."

About 18, 19,
I was addicted to drugs

and addicted to alcohol.

Those were
very challenging times.

And I was starting becoming
my late-30s--

I guess probably around 40--

is that a midlife crisis?

[laughs] That could be a,
you know--

it's hard to put a finger
on what it was,

but I guess
I felt a little adrift.

I was all alone.

Just with myself.

Just with my thoughts.

- I realized
that a lot of things,

what I held true
and a lot of my belief systems

were very, very false.

One of my great friends
lent me a few books.

One of my favorites at the time

was Jim Marrs' book
"Rule by Secrecy."

- His name was Jim Marrs.

- And while
you might not know his name,

a lesion of his fans
certainly do,

fans who followed his questions
about conspiracies

from aliens to JFK.

- Secret societies
are pushing harder than ever

at this very moment for,
what they call "globalization,"

or what you may have heard it
referred to

as the "New World Order."

- I was very intrigued
as to what I was learning.

And I've read another book:

"The Biggest Secret"
by Mr. Icke.

- I've been talking about
a race

of reptilian, um, humanoids

that have been behind

the manipulation
of world events.

- I saw things
for the reality they were.

What I thought was reality
was not.

And then I realized
that politics is a farce.

Um, it's a divide and conquer.

Republocrat, Demopublican,
there's really no difference.

You have the rulers
and the ruled,

the masters and the sl*ves.

You know,
I'm saying that's why I have

to consider myself
like an anarchist,

which basically means
no masters, no sl*ves.

For instance, in January 6th,

a lot people talk about
the election.

The election's stolen.

The president
of the United States

is not elected.

They are selected.

January 6th, I was simply
there to take a few pictures,

take some videos.

See what's actually ongoing
and what's transpiring.

Any kind of protest, rally,
demonstration,

oftentimes I'm going there
and not to be on one side

or the other,
to view, to learn,

to analyze, to talk to people,
take pictures, take videos.

- Nancy Pelosi's office
is down that hall!

- A New York man
is now facing charges

for taking part in the siege
on the U.S. Capitol.

The FBI arrested 50-year-old
Robert Chapman yesterday

in Putnam County.

- The FBI got a tip
from a surprise source...

one of his matches on
the dating app Bumble.

- Chapman told a match
on Bumble

he stormed the Capitol
in January.

- The person who matched said,
"We are not a match."

- That person
took a screenshot

and contacted the FBI.
[line trilling]

- He's not charged
with any violent crimes,

just a few misdemeanors.

- I have two charges
of trespassing

and two charges
of disorderly conduct.

Probably the worst
that could happen

is that the give me probation.

The best would be if they were

to actually drop the charges
themselves.

I've been collecting lots

the Child Protective Services.

Once they came multiple times
and took pictures,

and interviewed me,
and tested me,

and came back
and interviewed me again,

and did reviews...

I miss her very much.

I've been changing my reading.

Instead of reading
a lot more books

about, I guess, uh,
banking system and the occult,

I'm reading more books
about children.

I've even taken
parenting classes.

I only have love and care
for my daughter.

And I--I would like to believe
I'm a good provider and parent.

I will continue to fight
for what is right

and fight for what is moral.

And that is for me to spend
as much time as I can

with my daughter
as I possibly can.

And once again, I look forward
to having her come home soon.

This is--has been her home
for quite some time

and I miss her
and I know she misses me.

And I'm working hard
to, uh, reuniting

and healing what little is left
of my family.

talk a little bit about how

conspiratorial thinking
affects families, you know,

parent-child relationships,
sibling relationships.

- Right, so unfortunately,
with conspiratorial thinking,

there are a lot of divorces,
custody battles.

It's also wreaked havoc
on relationships.

People suddenly feel like
they're married to someone

that they don't even recognize
anymore.

It's created a lot of problems

between parents
and children also

because, um,
it's often the parents

who are getting involved,
and the children feel like

they're losing their parents
to it.

That's often the phrase
that's used within systems,

that people don't say,

"Oh, my loved one got involved
in this."

They say, "I lost.

"I lost my mother to this.

I lost my spouse."

- Mm-hmm.

[somber music]

- Our hearing's tomorrow.

So we go at 9:00 a.m.

to hear the issues of custody,

um, child support,

spousal support,
and use of the home.

My ex now has an opportunity
to tell his side of the story.

I'm feeling very anxious.

I think mostly just ready
to get it over with, you know?

My mom came in this afternoon
to help me just prepare

for tomorrow
and to give me support,

um, while in court
and tonight too.

- I know
that it's not gonna be easy.

- This is a big deal.

You know, you actually--
you putting it on record.

- I know.
- So this is basically just

like a establishing custody.

- Yes.

- What are you gonna say?

I mean--
- Well...

I'm gonna say how
this affected our--our child.

You know, the constant attempt

to convince her
of these things.

- The--the screeching sound

and the exorcism of what?

- Parasites in her brain.
- Parasites in her brain.

And I might've missed it

until I sat down
and actually did that timeline

and noticed, you know,

he'd have a conversation
with her,

and 12 days later,
she'd be expelled from school

or, you know, he'd have
a conversation with her,

and less than two weeks later,

she's in the hospital,
you know?

- You can't, you know,

you can't look at that
and those specific dates

and not see some correlation.

So, you know,

I'm gonna stick to the effects
on the kids.

That nothing's gonna happen
to them because--

I don't know what to expect
from him at all.

I do feel like he's chosen Q
over his family.

I have is I am able

to see Roxelana
every other weekend.

I get to see her on--
usually on Sundays,

and, um, it's normally
for about 90 minutes.

So I am able to spend,

at best, three hours
with my daughter per month.

Um,
that's actually very terrible.

It was just wonderful.

I got to see Roxelana
and play with her.

She said she wanted to go
outside, so we went outside.

We did slide and played
in the clubhouse,

which she has dubbed
the "funhouse."

So she had a great time

and, uh,
she said she misses me,

and I do miss her very much,
tremendously already.

And I hope to see her soon.

I did learn a lot,
and meet a lot of good people,

and see a lot of interesting
things down there.

I wouldn't regret
a single thing.

- Um, not really.

Honestly,
there's people in jail

who see their children
more often than I do.

I--one of my friends
went to jail,

and I used to take his son
to go visit him.

He would get an hour
during the week

and an hour on the weekend.

So I know lots of people
that are incarcerated

that get to see their child
even more often than I do.

Um, I'm still praying,
dreaming, wishing, and focusing

on, uh, alleviating the pain

of a fractured,
abandoned family.

Once again,
this is just f*ck' sl*very.

You're saying
this f*ck' person,

who I don't even f*ck' know,

is a gonna resolve
my personal family issue?

Who the f*ck are they?

Who the f*ck gave them
this f*cking right?

poisoned f*cking mindset

to think that certain people

have, once again,
the diseased f*cking illusion

of "authority"
over other f*ck' people.

Once again, it's an illusion,

but that most people
f*ck' believe.

Honestly, this person seems
so incompetent and uncaring,

concerned

that perhaps she will elect--

she will choose not
to find the resolution

and will instead elect
that this go to trial,

this go to court, in which case
this will take--

I've talked to other
people--two to three years.

Imagine another 2 1/2 years
of trial.

Anytime after one
of these ordeals,

doesn't matter whether
it's 20 minutes

or 2 1/2 hours,

I can't sit home.

I get the f*ck out,
you know what I'm saying?

It's just too,
uh, disconcerting.

You know, I don't wanna
f*ck' stay here.

I'm feeling pretty nervous.

I don't really know
what to expect.

I'm going to do my best
to relate to the judge

this sense of danger I feel.

This sense
of uncertainty I feel

about what he's capable
of doing next.

He was easygoing,
very much grounded in reality.

I would've never thought
in a million years

that he would've hurt anyone.

Until now.

He's so committed

to this false sense
of reality,

the conspiracies,

that I could see him
harming the children.

I want custody,

and as it stands now,

he has as much custody
of my children as I do.

I'm really unsure and nervous

on whether or not the judge
will see this

as an actual problem

because I don't think
that anyone

can fully understand
the difference

until they live it.

Lemme go check and see.

He doesn't know
who my ex was before this.

One of the scariest things

is that this is
a whole different person.

This is a stranger.

- Oh.

- I don't know what he'd do.

Okay.

- I know.

- Well--

- Yes.

- That some level
of conspiracy thinking,

or at least the thing

that underpins conspiracy
thinking,

is, like, curiosity, right?

- About systems,

and wanting to understand
how the world works,

and wanting to understand
why bad things happen.

- Sometimes, the people
who get very involved

in conspiratorial thinking

have more anxiety
than other people.

People also get very connected
to it

because they were feeling
isolated.

- Mm-hmm.
- And this is their way

of connecting with people.

And so are you gonna
relegate them back

to being isolated in the world
by taking it away?

There's also something
very intimate

about having a community
who you can visit with

in the middle of the night,
in your bedroom.

- Right. Right.
- You actually don't even

ever have to leave your house.

They're just there.

And there will be hundreds,

unfortunately,
hundreds of thousands

of people as soon
as you start typing

or as soon as you start going
onto different sites.

They're there.
They're always there.

And you feel like they're there
with you and they're for you.

[soft music]

- Psychologists like Rachel
say when we are confronted

with someone who believes
in conspiracy thinking,

the best thing you can do
is to just ask questions

and try to understand
what is drawing them to that,

and why they're searching
for that kind of meaning

and control and truth,

and to sort of start to work
on the underlying causes,

you know, anxiety, depression.

But I also think
that we are in a moment

where conspiracy thinking,
like, has a body count

and has really ruined a lot
of people's lives.

Listening isn't gonna solve
that problem,

and the thing
that I am currently

kind of struggling with,
is, like,

how much of the solution here
is empathy

and kindness and curiosity,

and how much
of the solution here

is thinking through
what consequences should be

for taking advantage of people?

Taking advantage
of people's pain basically.

It's called pandering!

And I think
that we need a new system

because the system
that was implemented

was put up against us
from the very beginning!

This is a global coup,
all right?

You are a prop
to this New World Order

that they're trying
to establish.

- It's not a conspiracy theory.

It's a conspiracy

the world leaders
have been planning

since the very beginning
of this country!

the judge ordered
an interim custody order

awarding joint custody

with me
as the domiciliary parent.

Um, my son is required to go
every other weekend

from Friday to Sunday
with my ex.

- No.

The judge knew very little
about QAnon,

and he sort of felt like it
was a "He said, she said."

There wasn't enough facts
for him to base that on.

However, my ex didn't deny
that he received downloads

to his brain
from a dead person.

Um, he in fact admitted it.

And I guess that alone
is not enough

to recognize
that maybe he's not fit

to parent right now.

So the idea of my son,

who's seven
and very impressionable,

being with him alone
every other weekend...

is stressful.

I'm afraid that even though
he's under an order

not to speak to the kids
about these things, he will.

It's gonna take extra diligence
on my part

to make sure that my son
is not being swayed

into an alternate reality.

I'm also still concerned about
his physical safety.

My ex's behavior
has changed so drastically

from just a year ago
that, you know,

my fear still stands
that at any moment,

I think that it could go
even further and...

there may even be physical harm
that comes to us.

completely ruined my family.
