the full cost of the concept car

that we already paid for.

[Mark] Here's the scariest part

of this situation.

I am presenting a lowrider

to a lowrider aficionado.

If he doesn't put

his seal of approval on what we did,

he ain't cracking that wallet,

and we're goin' home

with a car on a trailer with no money.

So, we got your almost not-typical

-'64 Impala lowrider.

-I see that.

[Mark] We got the white hand-stitched

leather interior.

-Nice.

-[Mark] Got the custom candy paint job.

You know how many hours

I spent in the spray booth.

I can tell,

especially with all the logos in it.

[Mark] It was a lot of stenciling.

I'm big on spider webs.

-[Dyse] Yeah.

-So I figured I haven't seen

many lowriders with spider webs,

but when I pulled up and I seen your wall

-[Dyse] You already know. Yep.

-I'm like, "We're in the right spot."

[Shawn] Make this baby bounce.

[music builds]

-[Dyse] Whoa!

-[Shawn] Oh, there you go. [laughs]

-[Mark] Is that enough bounce?

-[Shawn chuckles]

[Dyse] Yep. That's enough bounce.

Dyse, what are you thinking?

You're liking what you're seeing?

Car looks good. Build looks great.

What are you asking for it?

Well, here's the deal.

This cost us a pretty penny.

-We got to have 80 grand for this.

-Ooh!

I don't think I could do 80 grand, man.

I'm thinking 60.

-Sixty? Oh!

-Yeah, man.

[Shawn]

You know we put some money in this.

You know how nice of a car this is.

I'll go down to 75.

-We're getting closer.

-[Shawn] Yeah?

It did come from up in the high desert,

so it's never seen any kind of rust

or salt or anything like that.

[Shawn] That's gotta be worth

a little bit more.

-Show me a little love here.

It's a clean car.

Good build. Paint's nice.

-Did a great job.

Look, it doesn't cover the full cost

of the concept car body

and the ZR1 Corvette,

but this plan was a gamble to start with.

So I'm just happy we're going home

with a full wallet and an empty trailer.

-Well, talked to the Starr brothers

-Yeah?

-and the concept car body is done.

And it is paid for.

They are crating it up as we speak,

and it should be here in just a few days.

-Sweet.

-[Shawn] Wanna know what else?

-What else?

-Believe this or not,

I have found someone

that is willing to trade their Hayabusa

for your crazy Prius,

-if you can believe that.

-Really? Look at you.

As if building a concept car

wasn't crazy enough,

Mark wants to add a Hayabusa to the build

and sell them as a concept pair.

It was a long shot,

and it's crazy as it seems.

But this girl, her name is Megan.

-[Mark] Ah, it's a girl?

-[Shawn] Yes. And her style is out there.

That's why I think she's perfect

for some crazy Prius.

I've been working for about two weeks now,

trying to track down someone that

would be willing to trade a Hayabusa

for a wide-body Prius, and it goes

without saying, it has not been easy.

You gotta promise me.

If she doesn't go

for this bike-Prius trade,

can you do me a favor

and just let this deal go,

-and let's just not forget about

-Let what deal go?

Let this Hayabusa build go.

No.

Even if we had to eventually

sell the Prius outright,

I don't think we'd get enough cash

to buy a bike.

I'll do the best to sell her on this,

but you just never know

what's gonna happen, all right?

This girl Megan is our only chance

to keep this concept pairing alive,

whether Mark likes it or not.

[Mark] The Prius

just got back from body work,

so we'll wrap it up.

We'll get her down here,

and we'll cross that bridge

when it happens.

-All right.

-Geez. Away with you. Go away.

What, no "thank you"?

[dramatic music playing]

[Tony] One of the final pieces

we're adding to the Prius

is a custom-designed wrap,

and since Shawn has a potential trade

lined up for the Prius,

we need to get this car done today.

SOA did a pretty good job,

so now all we gotta do is the rest of it.

So let's get started

putting this whole thing together.

[Tony] The girl Shawn spoke with

on the phone

is looking for a big attention-grabber,

and since she owns a Hayabusa,

she's kind of an adrenaline junkie.

[Caveman] Oh, rattle can time.

[Tony] Mark decided to go

with this fighter jet look for the wrap.

The idea is that the wide body kit

gives it this race element,

and the wrap gives it

this fighter jet feel.

[horn honks]

-The horn works.

-[Constance and Caveman laugh]

[Tony] It's basically

speed on top of speed,

and hopefully, it fits her taste.

[rock music playing]

[Mark] When you see a Prius on the street,

it's a total afterthought,

especially here in California.

But this Prius

it's gonna make you

stop dead in your tracks.

We had no choice

but to go over the top on this build.

We started off with a boring, old Prius

and turned it into a one-of-a-kind

Gotham creation.

[groovy music playing]

There is nothing else like it.

Now, this car looks

as fast as it really is.

[motorbike approaching]

[Mark] Wow, that thing is really badass.

[turns off engine]

Nice bike.

[Shawn] Yeah.

You must be Megan, obviously.

-[Megan] You must be Shawn.

-This is Mark.

-Nice to meet you, I'm Mark.

-Nice to meet you.

It's pretty sweet, like there's no

rock chips in the paint, nothing.

It looks like it rolled off

the showroom floor.

-It's a lot of bike for me.

-It is a lot of bike, no doubt about that.

-That's definitely a head turner.

-I love to turn heads, so

[Mark] Yeah?

How many miles does it have on it?

[Megan] It's got under 6,000.

It's been sitting in my garage

for for quite a bit of time.

It's a little tough to haul around

some milk on the back of it.

[Mark and Shawn laugh]

So you're looking to trade it, huh?

I want something more practical,

something I can haul stuff around in,

get groceries in.

-Yeah.

-But, I can't

I can't drive like a minivan

or a mom car or anything.

-I need something that turns heads.

-What this bike does for your image,

that car will do the same thing.

Nobody's got anything like it out there.

-Awesome.

-[Mark] All righty.

-[Shawn] Let's do it.

-Let's go take a look.

So far, so good. Megan's Hayabusa,

that's exactly what I pictured.

-Good job so far.

-Yeah. Yeah, that was the easy part.

The hard part is gonna be selling her

on that crazy Prius.

Think I went too far?

Well, there she is. That's the jewel.

[Shawn] I tried to describe it

on the phone to you, but

-Little hard to take in.

-once you look at it, it's like,

a lot different. Check this out!

[Mark] We've modified

every square inch of this car.

[suspenseful music playing]

We did a whole lot of custom

graphics on it.

You will never see another car like this

on the streets, I guarantee that.

[Mark] Obviously,

it's got bigger wheels and tires.

It's got a Corvette front grille in it,

with some rockets.

It's got the b*mber girl on the back,

two racing seats in the front seat.

And back here,

we put on this big fin with a strut bar,

a cool bumper, and it's got

two old-school Ford tail lights

to make it look like a jet fighter

going down the road.

[Shawn] Is this not

a one-of-a-kind all original?

Jump in. Let's, uh Let's see how it fits.

There you go.

If she doesn't take this deal, there is

nobody else that we could trade to

-or that we could sell it to either.

-There, there, little buckaroo.

She just needs a second to take it all in,

and she's gonna come around, you'll see.

It's a little out there.

But that's what I wanted.

I really like the tail lights,

the body work,

all the artwork, like the pinup girl.

I pulled off the trade of a lifetime,

and you got yourself a bike.

Actually, in all of reality,

I didn't think this was gonna happen.

I thought there's no way you're gonna

be able to trade this car for that bike.

have been making calls,

trying to sell it. [laughs]

Let's go do some paperwork.

All right, Shawn, that concept body

is gonna show up tomorrow,

so you gotta make sure everybody's here

bright and early, ready to go.

The highly anticipated body

has arrived. Huh?

Definitely want to get it unwrapped

and see what it looks like.

-It's like Christmas.

-[Shawn] Right?

[Mark] You guys ready?

Let's get it off the trailer.

Having this body show up

and physically putting my hands on it,

it's a very surreal place to be.

Caveman, get to the front real quick,

so you can help lift it up over the nose.

I spent about 20 years

drawing this car one way,

then changing it and modifying it.

[Shawn] Easy! Easy.

-Oh man.

-[Caveman] Oh, there it is!

[Tony] Like a glove.

What was in my head is now physically

in front of me in one-to-one scale.

It's as perfect as it gets.

[Tony] When you build it with

lasers and computers, that's what you get.

It's gonna pay off big time.

It's a big thing emotionally

because that car, it's a piece of me.

There's a lot more to do. It looks like

we're done, but we're not even started.

And don't forget, it's got a matching

Hayabusa that goes with it,

so that's gotta get put together

at the same time.

Auction season is coming up,

so we really only have about six weeks

to get this car together.

[softly] Damn.

[Mark] Every year,

all the big car auctions

take place

right around the same time in Arizona.

Barrett-Jackson, Mecum, Russo and Steele.

Those are the big heavy hitters

in the car auction world.

They both need to go

as a matching pair to the auction,

and we can get

an easy 250 grand for the pair.

[Shawn] Oh yeah.

It's gonna take everything we got

to finish these vehicles in six weeks,

but a big auction is absolutely

the place we need to go.

The most influential people

in the car world attend these auctions,

and if we can impress that crowd

with the creativity and the ingenuity

we're gonna put into these vehicles,

that type of exposure is invaluable.

You need to go do your hype thing.

You need to start pushing this car

all over the interwebs,

to all the high-end clients, to anybody

and everybody you can think of.

The rest of us, let's get the body

mounted to the chassis.

[Constance] Sounds good.

[Mark] The big picture goal

of these concept vehicles

is to show off

everything this shop is capable of.

[techno music playing]

That, my friend, is a giant hole.

We want to package all that in these

two forward-thinking, futuristic vehicles.

First off, we need to strip the bike down,

so we can build it back up

to look like the car.

We'll add a custom swing arm in the back

and add a super wide back tire.

We'll fabricate all new body panels

and add carbon-fiber accents to the sides.

Then we'll move on

to transforming the car.

We'll add a custom convex windshield

that makes it look

like it's from a different planet.

We'll fabricate

six tail lights in the back

and add an over-exaggerated rear spoiler.

On the inside of the car,

we're gonna make this feel

like the c*ck of a spaceship.

We'll add a brown leather interior,

custom gauges, and a LCD screen

with front and rear-facing cameras.

To make these vehicles

flow seamlessly together,

we'll paint them the same color,

give them the same set of custom wheels,

and deck 'em out with matching

Gotham Garage accessory.

I grew up in the era of the Space Race,

so space and that futuristic, sci-fi motif

played a huge role

in the design of this concept car.

Basically, the car is the mother ship,

and the bike is the escape pod.

I'm stoked.

Tell you what, though,

doors would be fabulous

'cause this getting-in-and-out

of the back, it's kind of silly.

[crew laugh]

[Mark] Caveman and Constance,

you guys get on the bike in the morning

and get it rocking and rolling.

Tony, you and I

are gonna hop back on the car.

Now that we're up and running on

the concept car and concept bike builds

to our high-end connections

-Here's the car and the bike.

and see if they'll commit

to coming to an auction.

We're selling the concept car

and the bike as a pair.

Inevitably, there's gonna be

a ton of high rollers

at any of these big auctions.

With the bike

That's built from a Hayabusa bike.

We're talking speed here.

But if we want to increase our odds

of selling for big money,

I want to make sure we have some

of our most interested buyers

in the crowd, ready to bid.

As you can tell in the picture,

that's a one-off body.

But with COVID,

we don't even know how many people

are willing to travel to a big auction.

The platform that the car is built off of

is a ZR1 Corvette.

So I need to put the word out

and see what response I get.

I was a little skeptical

about how comfortable

these guys would be

at an in-person auction setting.

But based on their response,

these guys seem like they're itching

to come out and bid on these vehicles.

-[Kyle on phone] I'm pretty excited.

-Well, that's good news. [chuckles]

Now, I'm feeling a whole lot better

about creating a major feeding frenzy,

once these vehicles

hit that auction block.

[Tony] While Constance and Caveman

tear apart the Hayabusa over at Gotham,

Mark and I are gonna work

on the concept car.

[techno music playing]

Our concept car is gonna have

a lot of features

that are similar to a modern supercar,

and one defining feature

of most supercars is the doors.

We're creating doors

that have a dihedral hinge,

which is a type of hinge

that you really don't see very often.

It's similar to a door

that you might see on a McLaren.

What this dihedral hinge does

is move in two planes at one time.

So when we swing the door out,

it also spins and rotates

in the same motion.

Is that your final adjustment?

Is it gonna work?

-Oh, it works.

-[Mark] Yeah?

-[Tony] Take it for a test drive.

-Look at that.

That's pretty badass.

Yeah, let's get it on the car.

[upbeat music playing]

Tony's hinge is the exact kind

of engineering modification

we need for this car,

but the installation comes with a catch.

We have to install the hinges

on the inside of the door first.

-[Tony] Let's try this one.

-[Mark] That feels much better.

And then we have to cut the door opening

to match the hinge.

-I know you don't like to measure

-I don't.

but we're gonna have to draw lines

on the door.

This is one of those

measure-three-times, cut-once deals.

[Mark] Yeah, for sure, for sure.

If we screw up this cut,

we're gonna have to make another body,

and right out the gate, that's gonna

cost us at least another 10 to 15 grand.

This could be catastrophic disaster.

I guess I need a Sawzall

and a whole bunch of blades.

-Are you ready to commit?

-Yep.

-You want to sleep on it?

-[Mark] No.

Come back and just

revisit it in the morning?

[laughs] No. It's all gonna be good,

or it's all gonna be your fault.

[Tony] Oh man. It's the moment of truth.

You just get in the car. How cool is that?

-[Mark] Sweet.

Now that you're proud of yourself

and I'm proud of myself,

we need to get the other hinge in

and get the other door cut on it too.

But right now,

go over to Gotham and help Constance

and Caveman with the motorcycle.

-I'm gonna stay here and work on the car.

-[Tony] All right.

[Tony] Swing arm showed up.

Let's open this thing up

and take a look at it.

It's pretty nice looking.

[music continues]

[laughs]

-So this one has a 10-inch stretch.

-Big old tires

-Wow.

-And it's for a 300-millimeter wide tire.

-[mimics engine revving]

-[Constance laughs]

Let's see if we can

get this thing in there.

The concept of this concept bike build

is to create something that you might see

in a futuristic sci-fi movie.

You got it.

I was gonna give you 30 more seconds,

then it was time for the Sawzall.

[crew laugh]

[Tony] The great thing

about this concept bike

is that the performance is already there,

it already does 200 miles an hour.

We don't have to touch that,

so a lot of that transformation

is gonna be about the body work.

We have to just focus on the aesthetics.

-[Caveman] Pretty badass.

-Pretty cool, huh?

What are we gonna do next?

You got a big, old fat wheel for it?

[Tony] Let's see what this back tire

looks like on.

Look how wide that is. [laughs]

Here's the old back tire.

That's pretty hefty.

We need this 'cause the concept car

has such big tires in the back.

-We need the motorcycle to match that.

-Oh yeah.

[Tony] This bike is gonna be long, low,

and aerodynamic.

It'll almost look like a hover bike

you would see in the future.

This bike's gonna be crazy looking.

-[Constance] It's very futuristic.

-[laughs]

[Tony] So once we get the wheels

all mocked up,

then we can start doing body work.

We gotta build this custom body

to match the concept car.

-[Caveman] You're good at that. [laughs]

-Yep, that's gonna be the fun part.

[techno music playing]

[Mark] The cool thing

about this concept car

is that it's been living

in my head forever.

It's basically fantasy come to life.

But designing and building

a car of your own is a huge risk,

and that is what's got me

torn up on the inside.

Best-case scenario, people will love it.

We'll make a ton of money,

and my plan goes off without a hitch.

Worst case scenario,

it does not sell for a lot of money.

It's a failure and this shop

takes a hit on its reputation.

But here's the thing,

a few years back,

Ford auctioned off a concept car

called the Ghia Focus.

They expected to get

a little over six figures.

But when that car hit the auction block,

it went crazy, and they got

over a million dollars for it.

Now, I'm not saying that our vehicles

are gonna bring in over a million dollars,

but the point is, concept vehicles

that work and capture the imagination

go for ridiculous amounts of money

at an auction.

So if this car

goes for 250 grand or better,

we can basically build any car we want

for any client we want

with almost a blank check.

Here's the downside of it all.

If what I have in my mind

and what we're building

turns out to be a failure,

it puts a very dark cloud

over Gotham Garage.

[rock music playing]

The concept car is an original design from

Mark Towle, our main builder over here.

Ever since I started telling people

about these concept vehicles,

word has spread like wildfire.

[man 1 on phone] I'm always in the market

for something nobody else has.

Well, there you go. This is something

that might be right up your alley.

We're selling them

as a concept car and bike pairing.

Right now, it seems this concept car

and bike are the hottest ticket in town.

Now, we're not

selling the pairing outright.

What we plan on doing

is sell 'em at a big auction.

[man 2] So this is one of those purchases

where you don't tell the wife

until after you buy it, right?

[laughs]

With a live auction, you want to create

that competitive energy in the room,

and the more guys you have bidding,

the more intense it will get.

[man 3] Keep me updated on the build.

I know Mark was talking 250 grand,

but if we can get all these guys

in the same room

trying to one-up each other,

who knows how high we'll get 'em to go.

[Mark] The transformation of this Hayabusa

into our concept motorcycle

is almost complete.

So I want to focus all of our attention

on fabricating the body.

You're going to town

with them little things, aren't you, Tony?

-[Tony] Trying to.

-You're going to town?

You want to go to town? We'll make this

a three-seater and ride to town.

-It's gonna be Caveman in the middle.

-[laughs]

[Mark] Once we complete the full

transformation of this concept bike,

we can shift

all of our attention to the car.

These big auctions

are about four weeks away,

so the clock is ticking to get

both of these vehicles completed on time

to hit the auction block.

All right, you guys,

the body's looking good.

So let's get this bike prepped

and ready to get painted,

and then we can put it back together.

[slow techno music playing]

[Mark] This concept pairing

is far from ordinary,

so these vehicles will need a bold color

that makes them stand out in a crowd.

Yellow screams fast and exotic.

It is the perfect color

to tie the bike and the car together.

[music continues]

-[Mark] Hey, Caveman, Constance.

-Yeah. Ooh!

-Wow.

-How do you like that baby?

-[Caveman] I like.

-Look at those wheels!

[Caveman] That is badass.

-[Mark] The hard part's pretty much done.

-Yeah?

[Mark] We got a few things

we need to put on this bike.

Car's gonna have all the same stuff on it.

All the beads and trinkets are identical.

-I'm interested.

-[Tony laughs]

Caveman has just got "shiny" in his hands.

That's what he does.

-Let's get this thing together.

-[Caveman] Let's get some tools.

[techno music playing]

[Tony] Ever since we brought

the Impala in, we've had our heads down,

just building non-stop,

trying to get these cars finished.

So nice seeing this come together.

It makes me feel like we're almost done.

-[Caveman] It's always 80 percent.

-It's always 80 percent.

[Caveman laughs]

[Tony] But the bottom line is,

we haven't been paid in a while,

and that's tough to swallow.

We rolled all the money

from the lowrider sale

into the concept car build,

and now we're using money

from our cash reserves

to finish off the bike and the car.

Normally, we'd at least have

a quick cash build come through the shop,

but right now, we're literally putting

all of our resources in these two builds.

You know what I'm gonna do

when we cash in?

-I'm going on vacation.

-[Constance] Ha!

-[Caveman] Where are you going?

-[Tony] Anywhere.

[Mark] You can have

any Saturday and Sunday off you want.

[crew laughs]

[Tony] But seeing this concept bike

come together

and seeing the vision come to life,

I think everyone's starting to see that

sliver of light at the end of the tunnel.

[rock music playing]

[Mark] There are not that many vehicles

out there that scare me,

but this Hayabusa is one of them.

[music continues]

[revving]

This bike will perfectly match

our concept car.

We modified the body

and gave it carbon-fiber accents.

The stance and feel of this bike

give it a futuristic vibe.

And the wheels will eventually be

the exact clone of the wheels on the car.

[music continues]

Now that we've got one vehicle done,

there's one to go, and my vision

of this concept pairing will be complete.

[slow rock music playing]

[Shawn] I've been making

some great progress,

hyping up this concept car and bike

for a big auction,

but I got some news this morning

that Mark needs to hear right away.

What do you want?

Inevitably, it's gonna have a major impact

on our plans for selling these vehicles.

I don't know if you've been

following it closely on the news or not,

but the COVID numbers

are trending in the wrong direction.

And I've been getting calls

from these auctions.

It looks like

they're getting canceled one by one.

And it doesn't look good at all.

[Mark] Hearing these words

come out of Shawn's mouth,

it immediately puts me into shock.

We have everything wrapped up in that car,

our time, our money, everything.

These vehicles were built

specifically for an auction atmosphere.

You want the buzz and the exposure

that comes from selling

a one-of-a-kind pair like this

in a crowd of high rollers.

Long story short, our plan just got

completely blown out of the water.

-What are we going to do now?

-[Mark] Well

I guess, until we can figure out plan B,

we need to go out and let everybody know

what's really going on right now

and get a feel on it.

At least they'll know

that the hurricane's coming.

All right, our plan to bring these two

Because of the COVID-19,

those auctions are shutting down.

to let everybody see it at one time.

so we're trying to figure out

what kind of path

we wanted to take for this,

now that this situation has arose.

That's a big deal for us because

we're all in on this car right now.

We don't have any other builds. Everything

we have is riding on this project.

We have so much money

in these vehicles right now.

When it's all said and done,

we're going to have about 120 grand

into this pairing.

So I think we have no other choice

than to find a buyer for the car and bike.

That's where we're sitting right now.

But without the crazy bidding w*r

we'd get at an auction,

do you think that these guys

are gonna actually,

you know, offer something

that's worth what we've put into it?

I didn't throw an exact figure out there,

but they know they got to put out

some serious money.

You know, well over six figures.

It may not be 250 grand plus,

but based on the interest

I've seen thus far,

it'll definitely be a solid payday.

I'm just gonna have to get out there

and talk to these guys

and see who's willing

to pay the most money for the vehicles.

Right now, bottom line is,

I don't think we have a choice.

I understand and hear what you're saying,

but what if we did wait?

What if we finish the car

and put 'em in storage

and wait until the auctions come back?

You all have been to car auctions,

and you know how it is there.

You know how good these cars will do.

The point of the exercise, introduce

a Gotham Garage concept car to the world.

They're gonna happen again.

So it's a matter of

when are they gonna happen again?

It's not an "if", it's a "when".

I agree a hundred percent.

We're selling ourselves short

if we don't sell it in an auction.

But, man,

I don't know how much longer I can go.

[Shawn] From the beginning,

this plan had so many hurdles to overcome.

It involved building

four different vehicles.

The Impala,

the Prius,

the concept car, and the concept bike,

and it involved a massive

financial investment for the shop.

Mark, I definitely agree with you

that this is not what we planned at all.

I just don't think that we can bank on

waiting for if an auction is gonna happen.

We just don't know.

[Shawn] In my opinion,

we've taken this plan as far as we can go.

I know it's hard to accept,

but sometimes, you have to face the facts

and cut your losses.

I don't know where to go.

I've always trusted you

and your best judgment,

but it's a big what-if.
