01x06 - But It's a Tail Dude

Post by bunniefuu »

All right, here you go.

- Oh, this is cute.
- And how do you fan yourself?

Okay. You're a bit too much like this.

Keep your hand by your side.
Yes, exactly. Just in front of you.

You don't invade
other people's personal space.

And all you do is you wave your wrist.

When do I use it as a weapon?

- Throw!
- Give me your fan.

Please don't do that,
Your Highness. You're making me shy.

- Your Majesty.
- Who's there?

Comfy?

Yes! And bouncy.

So, hi. I'm Bunny Yan. I'm 39 years old.

And I am a fashion storyteller.

Today, let's talk about
traditional wedding dresses.

Back in the 1800s, the tradition
of a wedding dress is black.

What?!

I'll team up with brands
and create content like,

what's that dress made out of?
If it's cotton, what kind of cotton?

Who made it? Is there a story behind that?

So, I'm trying to translate
the thing that excites me

and tell stories in a way
that excites others.

So, Bunny is my nickname.

It's been following me
for the last 20 years.

It came from that commercial
Energizer Bunny

because I just keep on going and going.

From age of 12, I moved
from Shanghai to New Jersey.

In China, I was a very hyper
and friendly kid.

So, usually, when the kids go overseas,
all your relatives and everybody's like,

"Oh, be careful.
America is very dangerous."

For me, it's like, "She'd fit right in."

What's the outfit about? Is that Totoro?

Yes! It is Totoro! See?

When I went back to China,

there were definitely times
when somebody is telling me

a cultural behavior
that I'm just not getting.

People look at my face like,
"Oh, Chinese, you should understand this."

I'm like, "Nope.
Do not freaking understand."

"Can you be more obvious, please?
The subtle hints do not work."

I get offended by it sometimes,

but I know I'm quite high energy

and could press some buttons
the wrong way for sure.

They saw me trying to be disrespectful.

So, etiquette-wise, I'd definitely want
to know more and also find that

sweeter spot of, like, how far to be me

and how far I can maybe tweak
so it's still me, but more... acceptable?

- Hi!
- Hey, Bunny.

I'm Bunny.

- How are you?
- I like your hair.

Thanks! Are we hugging or shaking?

Let's...

- I'm a hugger, for sure.
- That's the American side of you.

Yeah.

- The Chinese side of you would do...
- No idea.

A nod.

- Oh, yeah?
- Yeah.

Sup?

You ready for class today?

Uh, sure. A little scared.

I'm kinda skeptical because
different people have different approach,

but it is very exciting
to see what's gonna happen.

♪ One, two, three
Show me what you've got ♪

This lesson is on dressing and styling.

So, what do you usually wear day-to-day?

Oh. Varies. I can be in this,
in a tutu, corsets.

Wow. It's like Victorian era
to ballet backstage.

Or a onesie. It's just whatever
that fits my fancy.

- You wear it out?
- Yeah.

Did you bring your onesies or tutus today?

Of course.

I don't think
I've seen anybody wear a tutu,

who's an adult, who's not on the stage.

- Hello, nice to meet you.
- Okay.

Go. Go get changed. I can't wait to see.

Now that I've heard about this onesie,

I want to see it for myself.
How bad can it be?

See? Outdoorsy, right?

Is that a tail?

Of course, leopards.

Can I pull it?

Yeah.

Two words in Chinese.

Speechless.

Onesies are fine for a nine-month-old,
but not a 39-year-old.

And there's a lot I want to teach Bunny
about creating a good first impression.

And you wear this to what?

- Outside.
- You'd wear this to a meeting?

I have. It's f*cking comfortable.

But just because
something is comfortable

does not mean
you should wear it out of the house.

Because people around you
may not feel that comfortable.

Is this the reaction
you're trying to elicit from people?

Do you want them to look at you
when you wear this?

It's not that.

People go, "Oh, you're trying too hard,
trying to stand out," whatever.

So, I try hard to "fit in."

To one point, I'm like,
"You can never make everybody happy."

So, I'm like, "Yeah, I'm gonna wear
whatever fits my mood at the time."

It's not like I pick things to, like,

"Hey, I think this will shock people.
Let me just wear that."

It's like, "I think this'd make me happy,
I'll wear that."

If you go to a restaurant
and see someone like this,

what would you say about that person?

Like, "I have the same onesie, dude."

No, but assuming you're not you.

Oh.

I can't assume I'm not me.

If things get a little awkward

or if I ask her a direct question
she's uncomfortable answering,

she goes childlike.

She's avoiding getting to the truth
of why she dresses like that

and looking at herself in a real way.

Ta-da!

Get over here.

So, I had no choice.

I have to give Bunny my honest opinion.

I think you know exactly
why you dress this way,

but you're not telling me today.

I think you've grown up
as a child not fitting in.

And when you go back to China,

you don't exactly fit in.

And part of you is like,

"If I don't fit in, I'm gonna take it
to the nth extreme."

"And F you, fine, I'm really not gonna
F-ing fit in. I'm gonna wear this sh*t."

That's what I think you're doing
by wearing these clothes.

But it is cute, dude.

And that's you dodging around the issue.

That's you not looking
at yourself in the mirror

and coming to terms with
why you dress the way you dress.

Never really thought
about that, so, aah!

This is throwing me off my game, for sure.

So...

what we're going to do

is we are going to help you
find your own style

to show that you are the beautiful,
unique, yes, a little bit crazy,

woman that you are,

but doesn't make other people
feel uncomfortable around you.

Etiquette's more than good manners.

It's about putting people
around you at ease.

And the clothes you wear
have a profound impact

on how people perceive you.

High-five? Let's do this.

What she said, like,
really resonates, you know,

what you think is you
and what you think is accepted.

Yeah, it's definitely interesting
to think about that.

Here's what I think.

You're bubbly. You like color.
We'll keep that.

But we'll get rid of everything else and...

...we will morph the onesie into jumpsuits.

Do they have a tail?

No. No more tails.

But it's a tail, dude.

I don't know, but it's something
I will think about.

But, like, I don't make rash decisions
until I fully process things.

All right, so for example,

think of this as a onesie,

but it's elegant and this has a belt.

It will define your body.
What do you think?

I think Bunny is warming
to the idea of the jumpsuit.

If you think about it,
it's really a onesie for grown-ups.

- I wouldn't mind trying.
- Right?

And then, so check this out.

Try throwing it on.

Throwing.

Yeah! Look at that.

This is actually quite fashionable.

Very strong. Definitely like,
"Okay, I'm a woman boss."

I haven't tried to look "normal"
for so long, I just...

I just don't think that way,
but definitely open to different choices.

I like it.

You find the yummiest fabric.

- Good morning, everyone.
- Good morning.

Let's talk about oral care.

How do you take care
of your personal oral hygiene?

I floss after every meal,
but I didn't start until recently.

Why is that so?

Because in China,
everyone uses toothpicks.

China didn't have dental floss
in the past, so people use toothpicks.

In China, people don't use dental floss

because they think it makes the gaps
between their teeth wider.

But actually, that is a misconception.

I love teaching my Chinese ladies.

I'm Chinese,
but I'm also very Westernized.

So, I'm constantly surprised when I see
how my Chinese students react to things.

It actually makes me
better understand my own culture.

Okay, now show me
how you floss your teeth. Come.

Okay, hang on. I will need
to remove my dentures.

I spent ten years studying in the States,

and the last ten years
living and working in China.

So what I bring is
an East-meets-West perspective,

because I think that both cultures
need to better understand each other.

And both cultures need to better
express themselves to each other.

You need to floss
as high as you can reach.

And you need to floss
both sides of that space.

You see white stuff on your floss?

To find out if you have bad breath,
you can smell your floss.

Go ahead, smell it.

Oh my gosh.

If it smells, it means
you have bad breath.

This is so unglamorous.

Let me tell you something.
There are no ugly women in the world,

only lazy ones.

That means behind every elegance,

there will be unglamorous hard work.

Now, let's keep flossing.

Today I've organized
something special for Bunny,

which I hope will help her
come out of her shell

and help me understand her problems.

And I want this experience
to be a surprise.

And open.

- Mahjong!
- Yeah!

- Have you played it?
- Yes.

Nice. But, to play mahjong,
we need four people.

- Hey!
- Hello!

Hello, everyone. We meet again.

- Bunny.
- Hi, Bunny.

This is Siok. She's from Singapore.

And this is Joey, who is from Hong Kong.

To generations of Chinese,

mahjong is much more than just a game.

It represents family, belonging,
and, of course, multigenerational sharing.

Bunny was born in Shanghai
and then moved to New Jersey?

- Yes, that's right.
- She moved back to Shanghai for a while.

When I went back to China for a while,

I look Asian, right?

So a lot of people expect me
to understand some of the...

Is it called "unspoken rules"?

- Unspoken rules.
- Unspoken rules.

And sometimes
they would say something and wait.

I'm just like, "What the hell
are you waiting for?" You know?

But more and more, you realize
it's not just a cultural thing,

it's a respect thing.

Even though I look Asian,

there's a lot of culture and even
language things I just don't understand.

It almost feels like
nowhere you go you'll ever fit in.

So, yeah, I want to definitely
get connected to my roots more.

That's the thing with etiquette.

Actually, etiquette is different
based on who you're with

and what country you're in.

So you go to China,
you have to play by their rules.

If you go to a foreign country,
you follow theirs.

So etiquette is about making people
feel comfortable around you.

When we leave our home country

and are immigrants in a new country,

we try to suppress aspects
of who we are, we try to assimilate.

And there's a Chinese proverb for this.

You don't reach either shore.
And I think that's Bunny's dilemma.

"West."

I almost cursed in Chinese!
It was so close.

Thank you.

You've won?

Ooh!

Thank you very much. Yay. Um.

Good job.

I'm sorry to beat you guys.

Let's have some tea.

Thank you.

- Mahjong and chitchat.
- Mm!

What was your opinion of mahjong before?

There was a period
I hated mahjong

because of the whole gambling aspect.

Oh, did you see your relatives gambling?

'Cause my dad's a gambling addict,

so I made my mom divorce
my dad when I was 15.

Because he was alcoholic, gambling.

Pretty much lost everything,
and a*usive, right?

So yeah, for a while, I just didn't want
to do anything with China.

When I was 15, I tell my mom,
"I can't live like this."

"It's like hell every time you go home."

"You need to get divorced
or something very bad could happen."

You know, Siok's son actually
made her leave her husband too.

- How old was your son then?
- He was 18.

Ooh.

But I insisted on staying in my marriage.

Because I felt like
my kids were still very young.

Didn't your mother talk to you?

My mom
was never able to share that.

And also, talking
about feelings and emotions,

Don't have the words for it.
I don't know how to express myself.

So I keep that door kind of locked
because it does bring up a lot of...

Yes.

Mm.

- I don't want to cry.
- It's okay.

- You can cry, we all love to cry.
- Yeah, we all have cried.

This is waterproof mascara...

- You still look beautiful.
- I make sure.

Bunny is holding so much anger
inside her that it's written on her face.

But instead, she needs
to be gentle with herself,

and opening up
is the beginning of a release.

All right, well, let's have
our fortune cookies.

Bunny, why don't you open yours?

Let's see.

My lucky number is...

Um. I can't read it.

I'm not gonna be able
to read that without crying.

Can I switch a different one?

Ooh.

- Why I gotta pick this one?
- Come on. You can do it.

Mm.

"Where there's anger,
there's always pain underneath."

You have to come to terms
with that pain and you have to release it.

I feel that cookie's rigged.

No, come to play mahjong with us
and release your anger.

Yeah, exactly.

That was a pretty emotional moment

because these are stuff that
I don't really open up to people,

especially when opening up
to somebody I just met.

I saw the real side of her,

the vulnerable side of her,

the side that's in pain.

And she admits it.

And I think she has to go
through that pain in order to heal.

Ah.

But you know what? Today is day one.

Yep.

Today is the beginning
of you coming to terms with this,

getting back and owning your Chinese roots
without the shadow of your father.

I'm gonna anger-eat now.

- Yeah.
- Somebody take a TikTok!

- To a more exciting life.
- Cheers.

Can't believe you made me cry.

Who uses perfume?
You don't use perfume, Siok?

I'm very sensitive to perfumes.

Actually using less perfume is better

because there's a lot of people
who are allergic to it.

You can have different perfumes
for summer and winter.

Personally, I like using
just one perfume for all seasons

because that becomes my signature scent.

Something that will remind
your ex-boyfriend of you

when he smells it.

Joey, how do you apply your perfume?

- I put a dab here.
- Uh-huh.

- A dab here. A dab here.
- Uh-huh.

Whoo!

Petrell, where do you use yours?

- I do it like this.
- Demonstrate.

I do it like this.

I spray it twice.
That will cover my whole body.

So, where should we apply perfume?

It should be where you wish to be kissed.

So, obviously this is where
Joey likes to be kissed, right?

Come up here, Siok.

Where would you like
your next boyfriend to kiss you?

Ooh, that's sexy. Where else?

Be more passionate.

Yes, be passionate. Where else?

On my lips?

The qipao
is a traditional Chinese dress,

and Bunny wants to get in touch
with her Chinese roots.

I can't wait to see how Bunny changes

once she gets out of her onesie
and into an elegant qipao.

Wow!

I like what I'm seeing.

China's sexiest dress.

Tight.

The qipao is a unique blend
of East and West.

It's Chinese, but influenced
by Western concepts.

And that's what she needs to be.

A mix of elegant, yet edgy and colorful.

A mix of Chinese and the West.

Now I want to see how a sexy, young,

in her qipao.

- Okay.

The most interesting thing is
when she was walking on the runway,

And what you wear changes how you feel.

That is why I needed to put her in clothes

And he's a feng shui master.

- Hello, Master.
- Hello.

- This is Ms. Yan.
- How do you do?

Ms. Bunny Yan.

We are here today

Mm! Great!

For feng shui, I know, like,
the overall idea of what it kind of does,

but I never had anybody
who done the whole thing.

I feel that Bunny has some things
that are out of balance.

- Yeah.
- Her Chinese elements.

Or her yin-yang, little out of balance.

And see how we can arrange things,
bring more positive energy into her life.

Yeah.

Feng shui is a centuries-old practice

that helps us minimize our downside
and maximize our upside

and also restore balance to our lives.

So Master Philip is working away,

doing really precise measurements,
and based on that,

your wealth position, health position,
marriage position, your sexual position...

- He's gonna give you...
- Is he gonna know about that?

I don't know if he could guess
those positions.

And he's gonna give you
very precise recommendations.

Except the sex position part.

According to the door direction...

...there are
four general types of "houses."

- Which one is this? Better be good.
- Very good.

This one is on the left.

- Is it good for fertility and wealth?
- Yes.

Oh! Yes!
This is the best type of house!

There are two
requirements for this house.

First, you need to have "water"
at your entrance.

Maybe a little goldfish?

Yes, a goldfish can work.

- I know what to fill.
- Even a big glass of water is okay.

Water is very important in feng shui.

It's the ancient Chinese symbol
of prosperity and abundance.

And flowing water means income.

Okay, put it over there.

Having more water will be better.

Let's do a little water.

Yes!

I don't have a green thumb,
but my boyfriend does.

We can both try to keep that thing alive.

Or just put glasses of water
in there when I'm drinking some.

Next is, in order to have good health,
we have a mountain fixture at the back.

The west side is this wall.

We put a mountain fixture over there.

Or a big oval stone,
just put it around here.

For now, I have something.

What do you have?

I got rocks I collected
on the Icelandic trip.

Do you have eight?

Yeah, I got eight.

So, either one huge one
or eight little ones.

- Eight small ones, yeah.
- Okay.

It's kinda cool that in the front,
it's water, it's about wealth.

In back, it's mountains about health.

I just so happen to have eight round ones.

This is the first time I've heard of that.
I mean, why not, right?

Add a little more luck in your life.
I don't see why not.

Yay!

Well, seems like all in all,
this is a pretty good apartment for you.

Make sure you get Master Philip's notes,
you implement them,

and I'm going to leave you
with something personal.

I get more gifts? Yay!

- Have you seen this?
- Yeah. In kung fu movies.

This is a "horsetail whisk."

It's used for warding off evil spirits.

- You know how to use it?
- I'm afraid to answer that.

Keep it by you and it will keep you safe.

Oh, thank you. That's cool.

Thank you so much. This was so much fun.

I'm so glad to bring you
back to your roots

and see how feng shui can help your life.

It is very fun to bring out
the dormant Chinese side of me.

You get bits and pieces of memory
from before sh**ting back.

Mm-hmm.

Thank you, Master Philip.
Let's do a group hug.

- Thank you.
- Okay.

- It might.

Oh, no!

First, I'm going to check your pulse.

Using just three fingers,

I can check the health of your lungs,
spleen, kidneys, and large intestines.

It's like a body scan.

Oh my God.

Okay, I can see that
your lung pulse is very strong.

It's not a big issue, but it means that
you have excessive fire of the lung.

And from that, I can tell that
you are easily excited and loud.

I like to talk loudly?
No way! I don't even like to talk.

Pulses do not lie.

I do not talk at all, I'm so shy. I mean...

So now I'm doing
some acupuncture for you.

This is some
Fear Factor sh*t right here!

Woo-hoo!

Holy sh*t, I'm gonna try this.
It's like pushing myself in my head like,

"Let's just try this." So you have

And the other one like, "Just try it."

If you feel pain, squeeze my hand.

I'm gonna bite it! I'm gonna...

- Relax.
- Okay, yep.

And inhale, exhale.

- See? It's in.
- Pain?

Is there a needle in me?

Am I like a unicorn right now?

Wow.

Definitely an interesting sensation.

Over here,

Bunny, you ready?

Well, the last thing
Dr. Benny prepared for you today is...

The more bitter it is, the better.

This will lower your heatiness
and help you sleep better.

Before today,
I never really had a Chinese medicine.

So, everything today was all something

Biggest mistake to make
with herbal medicine is to sip it.

You want me to chug this b*tch?

- Like a shot.
- All right. Okay.

Do it!

In one drink, go.

- You go, girl. Yeah, halfway there.
- Keep going!

It was quite fun, to be honest.

I feel I'm getting Chinese-ier every day.

Okay,
we will take our leave now.

Bye-bye!

Nice to see you. Bye.

In Chinese culture, eating together
is a shared experience.

And the way you take care of someone
is by preparing good food for them.

It's been a long journey.
Bunny's come a long way.

So it's time to celebrate
as we do in our culture

with some good Chinese food.

- Mm!
- I love a good chicken's foot.

- Walk over here, baby.
- That's right.

Chopsticks are an elegant way

You eat it from that side?

I eat it from whatever side
is closer to my mouth.

I always eat it from the toes.
I like to suck on the toes.

You look

There's a Chinese saying,

anything that walks,
swims, crawls, or flies

with its back to heaven is edible.

And we eat every part of it.

What was your favorite part of the course?

Actually, chatting with you.

I'm being honest,

I don't normally just have a conversation

So, you brought out a lot of
cool memories, bad memories,

building new memories.

Yeah. So, yeah.

I enjoyed chatting with you too.

That is one of the sweetest things
a student has ever said to me.

I think what was most important to me
is she felt my school was a safe space.

She opened up and talked about things

she said she hadn't spoken
to anybody about before

even though she just met me.

That meant a lot to me.

- Ooh!
- Mm.

- Mango pomelo dessert.
- Pur-ty!

Well, you know, Bunny.

It's the end of your course.

Delicious ending.

- A sweet ending.
- Mm-hmm.

I want to congratulate you
on your journey.

Because it hasn't been easy.

For you to have, yes, where you bawled
your eyes out to read that fortune cookie.

That was the first step to being like,
"Okay, I'm gonna overcome this."

I'm so proud of you for doing that.

Thanks.

And thank you
for placing your trust in me.

And letting yourself
be vulnerable with me.

That means the world.

I'm going to miss you.

Same.

I'm definitely surprised
I cried again.

I was so trying
to keep the emotion within,

but, yeah, it was a very touching moment.

Um, it was very nice.
It marked a very beautiful conclusion

for this beautiful journey.

Good morning!

I'm wearing a different onesie today.

Looks nice.

Thank you!

And the fuzzy one for the colder weather.

For the colder weather, yes.

Oh, I think Sara will love
this outfit, for sure.

Although the worst part
about this outfit, it doesn't have a tail.

Just kidding!

Damn, this is heavy.

Walking through the apartment now,
I'll be lying if I say like,

"Oh, you know, it makes
a huge difference in feeling-wise."

But all these elements remind me
of this awesome time I experienced.

And it reminds me of, like,
different Asian aspects about myself

that I can maybe incorporate.

- Hi, Bunny!
- Hey, Benny!

- How are you?
- Good to see you again.

I would love to learn more
about that herbal stuff.

That's something I'm really interested in.

So, the herbs will be helping
with better sleeping and release stress.

- Okay, thank you!
- Yeah, great.

I wouldn't say I'm being more Chinese,

because all of these parts is me,

but discover more parts of myself.

And, yeah, fulfilling, isn't it?

Each of my students has a personal story.

And I take them by the hand

and we dig deep to find out

what it is that's stopping them
from being their best selves.

Every class is a different class.
Every student is a different student.

But seeing their transformation,
it's satisfying, it's emotional,

and it's humbling.

Because they placed their trust in me
to take them on this journey,

and that makes my work very meaningful.

My job here is done.
