[tense music playing]
Covid-19 can be characterized
as a pandemic.
Okay, so it's March 26th, 2020,
and Covid-19 is a real thing.
[April] Renovations have to come
to a halt as of today.
On a typical day, like,
eight trucks parked here.
Always a bunch of guys around.
Always Courtney trying
to keep everything in order, and…
It's just so quiet. It's almost eerie.
We made the call the other day
that we won't open The June
in Prince Edward County till TBD.
I don't even-- when that is.
[Sarah] We don't know when money
is gonna start coming in,
and we have such huge bills to pay.
You know, saving grace,
a lot of people are, like, stuck at home.
We're stuck at work.
-We're stuck at work with our colleagues!
-Yeah.
[Sarah] The past few months,
I just didn't know if our business
was gonna survive the pandemic.
The June in Sauble Beach
was supposed to be open by now,
but construction
had to go on pause for months.
Our original motel has also been closed,
so we've had no income at all.
But we just got the news that motels,
hotels, restaurants, allowed to open.
So Rick and his team have started work
in Sauble with Courtney overseeing them,
and we're headed to Prince Edward County
to open the original motel.
-[April] There it is!
-[Sarah] I see The June!
[April] Let's see
how things are faring inside.
Hello!
-[Sarah] We're back. Honey, I'm home!
-[April] First order of business.
Now we're ready to open.
-It just feels so strange.
-I know.
We should be
in full summer mode right now.
Sold out.
Pouring rosé every night.
Camp fire on every day.
These months have been so hard
on the business.
We've had to return so many deposits
and lost $100,000.
So stressful.
But I think there's light
at the end of the tunnel.
-That's the good news. We can now open.
-True.
Guests have started booking here in Prince
Edward County and are showing up in days.
We really need to get this place ready
so we can get back to Sauble.
Let's do this.
[Sarah] Whew.
[April] Exciting things
are happening here.
We're getting ready to open our doors
in a whole new way.
So we have decided
on a couple of cool improvements.
We had Grant hanging
these fun new lights today.
Beautiful ambience.
People can play their lawn games at night.
We also moved our iconic neon sign. So,
now, you can have a little photo moment.
Here we are!
We're the housekeeping team today!
Yeah. Check out this visor.
-Yeah.
-I'm liking the look.
[Sarah] We have guests on the lawn.
We're ready to go!
-Girls' weekend.
-Girls' weekend.
[Sarah] I'm still a little shocked.
Even with Covid,
I feel like we've managed to pull off
like, a really amazing moment
at The June here.
I think we'll be able to do something
-really great in Sauble.
-Yeah.
I'm ready to move back to that project
and just, like, get it done.
[Sarah] Seeing The June come back to life
has given us that little boost we needed
to get back to Sauble
and get back to work.
[April] Back at it!
[Sarah] Luckily, this region hasn't been
hit super hard by the virus.
We're following local protocols. Right
now, it's not required to wear masks.
Also, we're all regularly getting tested.
It's been a rough few months.
-There were some dark days.
-Yeah. There's still some dark days ahead
-because we're so behind.
-Yeah. Financial situation's scary.
There is a question mark
as to what our full budget can be now.
When we started this project,
the budget was 600,000.
We're looking at a budget
of about $500,000 now.
How do you shave $100,000 off
of this project?
We're gonna have to be really
financially cautious and not overspend.
On the bright side,
at least before Covid hit,
we had finished the prototype rooms
for the king and the double.
[Sarah] Now construction's allowed,
the guest rooms,
which are still a work in progress,
are back underway.
The big structural work is done
in the A-frame, now the lobby bar,
but there's still
a lot of work to do there.
The restaurant's been gutted,
but that's it,
and the pool
hasn't even been touched at all.
We need two full months of work
and construction before we can open.
If we can be open for Labor Day,
it can work.
Build some really strong hype over
the summer. Get people really excited.
[Courtney] It's summer 2.0.
We should try and stay open
as long as we can,
but because Sauble gets absolutely
destroyed with winter weather,
we're probably looking at the end
of October as a realistic timeline.
It's gonna be really important
for us to get those bookings in the fall.
We're counting on those two months.
We have maxed out
as much money as we can borrow.
One thing we need to do stat is think
about how we're launching reservations.
Now that we have an opening date,
we can start to plan all that out.
Get the website finished,
then we can start making money.
-[Sarah] Exactly.
-[Courtney] Yep.
[Sarah] Sauble Beach is finally
coming to life.
We need to find a way to convince guests
to book at the motel.
[April] We have great photos of rooms
for the website,
but we really need some photos
of communal spaces,
and the A-frame is closest to done.
Right now, the only thing that's standing
between us and launching reservations
is photos of the A-frame.
[Sarah] Whoa!
[April] That window's amazing!
[Sarah] Walls look really beautiful.
-[April] Love the ceilings.
-Hey, Rick.
-Hi.
-[April] What do you think of the window?
[Rick] It's good. Makes it look bright.
It was a bit of a splurge,
but that entrance will be nice to have.
Now we need to find
some ways to save in here,
and that big, custom bar
that we were dreaming of
is way too expensive to be realistic now.
[April] We need a different plan.
We need a good first impression, though.
This is where people walk in.
This would be
a cool statement seating area.
A bunch of hanging rattan light fixtures
in the middle.
That's a really cool photographed moment,
so we could put a bar here,
or we put it
at the back wall to the right.
Okay. Welcome to The June Motel
and Swim Club.
You actually have a backdrop here,
whereas before, you didn't. Feels good.
-What's that bar gonna look like?
-We really love terrazzo.
So I think we need to design a bar
that only needs one slab of the terrazzo.
I'm pretty sure
that they're eight feet long,
which if we just designed the bar
eight feet long…
So this is eight feet right here.
That's a really, like, a good-sized bar.
-I don't need to be here anymore.
-You don't want to hang out with us?
No, I have lots of stuff to do.
-Okay, thanks, Rick.
-You're welcome.
Couldn't have gotten out
of here any faster, could he have?
-God, no!
-Okay.
We need to talk about
what's behind the bar.
I wanna lean into the moment
of the ceilings.
Like, that line of the vaulted ceiling.
[Sarah] We could do a big neon sign.
[April] Very June Motel.
What about cool mix of neon sign and art?
[Sarah] That does make a great statement.
This is the first impression,
-and it is a good one.
-Love that.
-[April] Hi!
-[woman] Hi!
-Oooooh! Amazing.
-Some art here for you.
Christine Flynn is this amazing
photographer that takes stunning photos
of Lake Huron and Sauble Beach area.
We'll be working with her to design
the art wall behind the check-in desk.
First thing you're gonna do is walk in,
go to the check-in bar,
and this is gonna be behind the bar.
-The showpiece.
-Yeah.
We have some prints to show you.
One of these
of the peninsula would be great.
-Really cool.
-This beach scene
is right in front of your motel.
[April] This is our color palette,
'70s beach vibe all in one photo.
Okay, I'm really drawn to this.
-Such a '70s retro moment for us.
-[Christine] I love that one.
-[Sarah] A must for us.
-Love it. We put the vintage frame over.
-[April] That looks so amazing together.
-I've also created a mock-up.
"The June Motel"
in the middle there, that's the neon.
[Christine] That's the neon.
-It feels very on-brand for us.
-Right.
-We're working on that.
-Yeah.
Lots of debate on what it's gonna say.
What are your options so far?
We've debated "Out of office," "Welcome to
Sauble Beach" or "Wish you were here."
Oh, I love that one.
Such a retro phrase from postcards.
-I love it.
-Yeah. Is that what we're doing?
Yeah. Why not?
"Wish you were here."
You're there. I'm here.
-[Sarah] That's me, that little guy.
-[April] That's a child! [laughs]
But he's having so much fun!
Even with the changes
that we made to the A-frame,
we still need to find places
to cut the budget.
With the way Covid's changing things,
the restaurant
is the prime place to do it.
[April] That impacts more than us.
[Sarah] Our arrangement with our partners
is a profit-sharing agreement.
We take ten percent
of their revenue as a lease payment.
So any changes to the renovation plan
that could impact the revenue
will have a big impact on them as well.
Oh, my God, the pink hallway!
I forgot we made that decision.
-Hi!
-Hello!
-Hey!
-Oh, here we are. I wanna hug you.
Oh, social distance hug.
Such weird times. How you guys doing?
We're trying to pivot and think
about what this all looks like now.
-Has this changed plans?
-Not being able to open when we expected,
we're not gonna have the budget to really
do the interior as we had hoped to.
We're thinking
we really focus on the patio.
We want to be able
to give you this amazing restaurant here.
We feel sorry that we can't
kind of come through on that right now.
-That makes sense.
-Right now, people can't even eat inside.
We don't know when
they're going to be able to.
-It makes a lot of sense to push that off.
-Yeah.
People want to sit on the patio.
-Covid or no Covid.
-Exactly.
People still wanna eat fun things.
They definitely wanna drink rosé and--
They wanna drink more rosé
than they did before.
[April] We are so grateful
the restaurant partners
are on board with the plan
to focus on the patio now.
It's gonna save us
tens of thousands of dollars,
and we're confident the patio will make us
and our partners enough revenue
to get through the season.
We made some decisions
right before quarantine.
We did buy all of the tiles.
So we will still lay all of the tiles.
We ordered the wallpaper.
We ordered these custom doors
that should be coming in any day.
We'll keep working on our design for
the patio. You keep working on the menu.
-We'll go from there?
-We need to do the tasting soon.
-Can't wait.
-There will be wine.
[Sarah] Best ideas come that way.
We just got the patio door
for the restaurant.
That's 16 feet long.
It weighs a ton.
We need ten guys to be able to move it,
but we don't have anywhere to store it
because it won't fit in
through any doorway.
So… I'll go see what's going on.
Good job, Jordan.
[groaning]
-[Rick] Get past the lights.
-[Courtney] Good work.
Finally, the door is going in.
Very excited about it.
There we go. One step closer to a motel.
[calls]
[Sarah] The patio is our restaurant now,
and the restaurant team is in full swing
moving forward with our new plan.
So it was time to settle on a name.
So we chose Heydays.
It's breezy, retro, and says good times.
Even though it doesn't feel like
great times right now,
we know that post-Covid, it will be.
Who needs indoor dining?
Yeah. It seems the restaurant partners
are very understanding.
So shifting our focus,
doing this, and doing it right.
We still need to make some really good,
smart budget decisions here.
[April] I'm super excited
to design this space.
Overall, I'm just picturing
really good music, lots of plants…
-A place to have a drink, play a game.
-A snack.
I feel it just fits. Like, "Heydays."
-Oh!
-Like, it is so perfect.
[April] It's so perfect.
I'm pretty worried about this giant dent
in the middle of our patio.
-That's a total tripping hazard.
-I love that you're the safety police.
I'm also the klutz. I would trip in that.
-You really would.
-You know it.
[Sarah] So for safety and looks,
let's cover this interlocking brick
with a white wooden deck.
[April] The building needs--
-[Sarah] A fresh coat of paint.
[April] We'll work with the existing bar,
potentially paint it a fun color.
We'll build a massive shade structure
that still brings in
a lot of natural light.
Rattan chandeliers.
Hang some plants.
An eclectic mix of tables.
If we can't afford
the beautiful, beautiful patio furniture,
maybe we could just
get some picnic tables.
-We can do a lot with paint.
-[April] Sure.
[Sarah] Make them look
interesting and unique.
I also think we need some string lights
-to really give it a vibe in the evening.
-[April] I love that.
We want it to be so inviting
that you're sitting on your patio,
and you're thinking, "I wanna have a drink
at the bar down there. It looks more fun."
-I hope we can afford to do it all.
-I'm so excited.
I haven't felt this way
about the project since before Covid.
[Sarah] It's the first official person
to step through the door.
[Jackie] Hi, guys.
[both] Hi, Jackie!
Jackie is the owner
of an amazing graphic design company
called The Paper Bakery.
She's worked with us for years developing
The June branding,
and she's our web designer.
So, shall we talk about the website?
-Yeah.
-Okay.
I just sent you the style guide
with your new logo.
[April] Amazing. It's so pretty.
[Sarah] It looks so good.
We have our branding color palette,
which includes our amazing new colors.
I'm excited to see how it actually, like,
shows up in the website
and then all the other materials
that we end up doing for the property.
I really wanna
see us move along quickly on this
because as soon
as we can launch this website,
it means
we can start getting reservations,
-which means we can start making money.
-Yeah.
[April] To our marketing plan,
photos are everything
It's never been more important.
We need to inspire tons of people
to book here.
-Perfect.
-Then the money comes rolling in.
Oh, God. I hope.
[April] We had to downsize our plan
for the bar in the A-frame,
and now we're a little bit worried
that we won't get that wow factor.
[Sarah] We're checking before it gets
treated with yellow tiles
and terrazzo countertop
to see how it's coming along.
It looks amazing.
I love the rounded corners.
-[Sarah] I love the brass details.
-You did a great job.
-[Sarah] Yeah.
-Thanks.
So, the terrazzo will be, like, curved,
templated to fit.
They're gonna cut it
specifically for the bar,
then we also have the tile here.
We're doing a long,
skinny tile, a two-by-eight.
-[Brennan] Nice.
-[April] It's a soft yellow color,
and then the terrazzo countertop
will go on top.
-That's great.
-It'll be amazing.
It's starting to feel like a real space
now that the ceilings are in,
and the walls are in, and the windows.
-Now we have a bar.
-It's perfect.
It's Saturday morning in Sauble Beach,
and Malcolm and I
have a pretty fun project today.
I'll take any help I can get,
whether it's from my dad or boyfriend,
I'm calling anyone and everyone
who can contribute.
I'm not paying him,
but he's getting some love.
We are painting a surfboard.
The surfboard has been a guiding element
for the design for the A-frame
to bring those retro beach vibes to life.
So, as you can see, the surfboard is pink!
We have taped down where the stripes
are going to go
and now we're gonna paint them.
This is the finished product!
-Looks pretty good.
-[laughs]
-[April] So good to be in the city.
-[Sarah] I know.
[April] This is gonna be fun!
We are at The Apartment, an amazing
vintage store in the heart of the city.
-So gorgeous.
-Oh, my God.
-Hi! Welcome to my shop.
-Amazing.
[Sarah] We're on the hunt
for inexpensive, vintage pieces
that will add that personal touch
to the lobby.
[April] The hands?
-They creep me out. No offense.
-Do they? I think they're cool.
I was looking at these hands.
This feels like…
-Surfer vibe.
-…'70s surfer vibe. I think that fits.
-Is that a real plant?
-Yeah.
It's so pretty and pink.
Oh, my God, if there's one plant
that someone has to take care of.
I will take it on and I will take it home
-at the end of the season.
-Maybe I want to take it.
-You would not keep it alive.
-I might!
-[Sarah] Is this weird?
-No! No, it's the beak thing.
Oh, I like it.
-This is such that '70s yellow color…
-Yeah.
…that we've embraced everywhere.
Okay, can I get this bird?
-Look at how cute that is.
-No!
-Come on, just one.
-Vetoing.
-We'll make it work somewhere.
-Vetoing!
-Ooh!
-[Sarah] No naked ladies in the space.
-[April] Come on, we're feminine!
-No! It's too much.
If I let you get the boobs,
can I get the bird?
[laughing]
-[Sarah] You can't take us anywhere.
-[April] No.
[April] We are finally hitting our stride.
We're making progress on our newly crowned
Heydays restaurant patio.
[Sarah] The A-frame's
almost ready for photos.
Which means we can launch the website,
so reservations and money
can start rolling in.
But now, we have to turn our attention
to something that we've been neglecting.
The pool.
[April] Ugh, here we are.
This is disgusting.
Eww! What's growing in there?
Looks more like a pond.
There is literally
a hole in the pool deck.
All this concrete, how do we repair that?
I don't know. I need a moment.
This is when we need the pool boy
to clean the pool and bring us a drink.
This is not what we want
as the heart of the motel.
Okay, let's visualize this.
We're gonna get rid of the hot tub,
blow that out.
I'd love to see a bigger pool deck.
We need way more space.
-We need privacy from the road.
-Yeah.
[Sarah] I would love a great fence.
[April] We want this to feel like
an intimate space.
[Sarah] I agree.
I wanna do something awesome
with this pool deck.
A checkerboard tile
or a painted pattern on the concrete.
-[Sarah] I love the clear glass fence…
-[April] Clear glass.
[Sarah] …so everyone gets a good view.
Same, I hate these fences.
We'll leave the existing lights
because they're amazing and retro.
[Sarah] We need amazing lounge furniture.
[April] Awesome umbrellas.
[Sarah] Awesome floaties.
[April] And plants
will make a huge difference.
-The motel building?
-[Sarah] The trees look beautiful.
-[April] Yeah.
-[Sarah] I love the sparkling pink rock.
[April] Not a fan of the rock.
That is such a statement. It's so unique.
Nowhere else do you see that.
You love the rock that much?
I'm a geologist's daughter.
I need to keep some of that rock.
-I'm okay with keeping some rock…
-Yes!
…in one or two key places.
-I will let you paint all the rock white…
-Great.
…other than this spot.
[Sarah] So we keep the rock. Whoo!
Paint the building either white or pink
to match it.
We'll need great outdoor furniture,
hammocks,
and some plants on every balcony.
-A nice vision.
-We just have to create it.
I worry about our budget of $50,000.
-I know.
-It might not be possible.
There's no more money left in the bank,
but we can dream.
Time for a swim?
-You first.
-Uhh…
I'll give you $200 to jump into the pool.
Two thousand.
-I don't have $2,000.
-[April laughs]
So, today is a very exciting day
because it's delivery day.
[Sarah] What's our game plan?
Honestly, I'm feeling overwhelmed.
-[Sarah] We're days from the photo sh**t.
-[April] There's so much left to do.
[Sarah] But nothing's more exciting
than unboxing and arranging furniture.
This is a pretty epic moment.
-Particularly love the jumpsuit day.
-Makes me feel we're all ready to work.
-Yeah.
-[April] Right?
Okay, so my vision,
we're gonna need a rug for this space.
-Yeah.
-What's the coffee table?
Start with creating just that nook
and then build around it.
-Yeah.
-Yeah.
-Aaah!
-[Sarah] Okay.
[April] We could do one chair.
That needs a side table.
[Courtney] Yeah.
That looks good with that.
[April] This table
-and chairs look amazing.
-[Courtney] Yeah.
[April] I'm torn between it leaning
and it hanging.
I think if you lean it, you have to
still put something above the sofa.
-I'll hold it so you can see it.
-Okay.
I liked the surfboard leaning
'cause it kind of balances the plant.
Leaning feels more casual.
This is too intentional.
We want people to feel like
-it was effortlessly put together.
-Exactly.
I think it makes people feel
kind of at ease.
The other coffee table.
-[April] I like that.
-[Courtney] Looks good.
[April] There's something I like
about the warmth of the woods.
[Courtney] It's like a very cozy,
natural nook.
You also, from this angle,
have a great view of the gift shop.
So you're sitting, drinking your c*ck,
being like,
"Oh, I really want that pillow."
A hundred percent.
The gift shop
is gonna be one long retail wall
with open shelving and basic cupboards
underneath to store inventory.
[April] We need to Junify them,
so we're going to experiment with funky
knobs and different paint colors.
Oh! Looks so good.
-[April] We want color.
-[Courtney] Yeah.
[April] This feels a bit
like a neutral blush.
-[Courtney] Yes, totally.
-Our classic apricot beige.
-Apricot beige has a touch more pink.
-Yeah. I'm feeling the apricot beige.
-[April] Oooh!
-[Sarah] I know. That's really fun.
-So fun. That yellow is amazing.
-It's so cute.
[Sarah] As much as I love it,
I feel like it's the same color
as the tiles
that we wanna use for the bar.
[April] It feels predictable to do
the yellow cabinets, like matchy.
[Sarah] It's too matchy.
[April] So definitely going apricot beige.
Let's test the knobs!
Ooh, these are pretty. This is fun.
I love choosing knobs.
Knobs are the jewelry of a kitchen.
-[Courtney] Yes.
-[April] This one is so beautiful.
-I love that. Like a pearl.
-[Courtney] I love-- Yeah.
-[Sarah] Golf tee.
-[April] This is a little boring.
[Courtney] This one's kind of nice.
-All of our favorite.
-[April] Paint this, tone on tone.
[Sarah] Why not bring in that pop
of something fun?
-Feels like a crystal or something.
-Yeah.
It'll bring good vibes. It's the one.
This is what our cabinets
in the A-frame will look like.
There is so much happening right now.
The tile's going on the bar.
The cupboards are going in.
We're almost there.
The gift shop cabinets look great,
and Courtney has sourced
some awesome merchandise.
-[Sarah] All this looks so beautiful.
-[Courtney] I know.
[Sarah] This space
is an important source of revenue for us.
So it has to look pretty
and make people wanna spend money.
Here we have such a good opportunity
to actually display so much product.
All this storage in here too is awesome.
We could try the beach bag over here
for some height,
even in the middle to kind of break it up.
[Courtney] Yeah, I love that.
[April] The combination
of it looking good,
but also practically, being able
to see what I'm buying.
[Sarah] I love the
shop your room experience.
Having the quilts from the rooms,
everyone's gonna want to buy them
who has actually used them.
-Or seen it in the photos.
-Yeah.
Oh, yeah.
-I'm most excited for the visors.
-[Sarah] Yeah!
-I like them.
-Think they're kinda cute.
-These will be a practical purchase…
-For sure.
People who forgot their beach towels,
here you go.
Same as coffee table styling
or styling a shelf at your house.
-It's balancing the highs and lows.
-[Sarah] Yeah.
[April] That mixture of material,
color, and pattern.
[Courtney] I would buy a bunch of things,
put it in this bag,
and be on my merry way.
[Sarah] I know.
I'm excited to shop the whole gift shop.
By the time we open,
we'll have nothing to sell!
This is gonna be a photo moment.
-[Sarah] I love that vase.
-[April] Me too.
-Not liking this with the silver.
-[Sarah] Yeah.
It's the little details
that make The June The June.
The key to coffee table styling
is various shapes, sizes, heights.
-Better color match.
-[Sarah] Yeah.
Your eye shouldn't go
to everything at once.
It slowly picks up different things
along the journey.
[Sarah] Yes.
[April] You want to keep discovering
when you're in the space.
[Sarah] Adding some chrome
is, like, very '70s.
Mm-hm!
-[Sarah] The $50 coffee table. Great find.
-[April] I know.
[Sarah] We really brought in
that high-low mix.
That's what makes it feel
like a lived-in space.
It's the leaning surf board, the palm.
I love the tapestry.
Three dollars! I think we're done.
It's our best work yet.
Nailed it!
We need to launch the website
in the next few days.
Thankfully, our photographer Lauren
was able to come and sh**t the A-frame.
[April] She can take a place
that looks great and make it look magical.
Oh, it's beautiful.
Warm, Cali deliciousness. I love it.
[April] I'm proud of how
the space came together.
There's not much
that I would do different.
[April] We haven't shared a single photo
of the shop yet.
People are gonna die!
Let's do a little moment here
getting the shop. Love that.
Okay, so let's swap over in here.
Okay, that's cute.
Did you guys intend to dress the same?
-No.
-It is the same outfit.
[both laugh]
-[April] That's amazing!
-"Oh, these strange twins
are reading in this fabulous lobby."
Three, two, one.
-Looks so cute, right?
-[Sarah] Love it.
-[April] That's a money shot. Gorgeous.
-[Lauren] Right?
We've been talking about this
for six months.
I can't believe we're actually going
to let people book here officially.
We need money coming in.
We're asking 420 a night
for opening weekend.
It's a three-night minimum
'cause it's a long weekend.
That's a $1,500 reservation, roughly.
Rate will include yoga class on the beach,
lawn games, and frosé.
-Includes other special surprises.
-Yeah, sounds great.
-It's just gonna be you and I. Surprise!
-Hey!
-Have not planned the event yet.
-That's scary.
Yes, we still need
to plan the opening weekend party,
but we need to just get this launched
to see if people book.
We're a seasonal motel,
so all we have is September and October
to make any money this year.
It's nerve-racking.
I think we might be some
of the only people crazy enough
to launch a new motel during a pandemic.
No, every other hotel that was supposed
to open this year is opening next year.
We would lose our business
if we waited till next season.
-Yeah.
-We absolutely need
to make $75,000 in revenue.
-But that's over two months.
-Over the two months.
You think we're gonna make $75,000 today?
Not a chance.
-Yeah.
-I would be super happy with 20,000 today.
Press "launch."
There's literally no turning back.
[Sarah] Do it.
Okay.
[April] Now, we have no choice
other than opening on Labor Day,
no matter what happens.
