Me and my girls now here we go ♪

Another Friday night

and we're in party mode ♪

[Brit squeals]

NARRATOR:

And now it's time

to talk about the lies

we tell ourselves

in this chapter of our love story.

[cheering]

And when it comes to love,

that list is endless.

ABBY: [gasps] Ew.

BRIT:

Looks like a cottonmouth.

NARRATOR:

Take the lie of distraction, for example.

ABBY:

No, why are you slowin' down? Go.

- I was just lookin'.

NARRATOR:

Like when we tell ourselves

that we can actually

run away from our problems.

[Abby and Brit laugh]

Since Abby's been screwed over by Trevor,

duped by Corbin, and derailed

by her mother yet again,

she's all-in on the idea that a road trip

with her ride or die will fix everything.

Come on, get out on the floor ♪

And don't hold back anymore ♪

Buckle up, Buttercup.

What are you waitin' for? ♪

And away we go.

ABBY: Woo! [laughs]

BRIT: I know, man.

We got a bumpy one.

ABBY: Have you ever been to a rodeo?

- Yeah.

- I have not been

to a rodeo in years.

I grew up going.

My mom was actually, um, married

to a bull rider, her second husband.

- Really?

- Yeah. Um--

- I love that.

- So, yeah, we grew up goin' to the rodeo.

BRIT:

Your mom never surprises me.

- Yeah.

- She has everything under her belt.

I love that.

Are you happy to be back

or do you miss New York any?

- I do miss it, but I don't know.

It's, like, so good to be back.

I never thought that I would

wanna come back, but I don't know.

It's slower and you kind of

get to enjoy life more

just because you're not, like

- Absolutely.

- hustlin' all the time.

- Alright your ex?

- What?

- Do you miss him?

- [sharp exhale]

Yes and no.

Like, I think it would be harder for me

if I was still in New York right now.

I'm completely okay

with my decision, but I don't know.

BRIT: I'm proud of you for makin'

the necessary changes and steps

to doin' you.

You know?

- Yeah.

It takes a lot for me

to actually wanna date somebody,

so when I do, it's, like,

I give my all into it,

which kind of makes me

end up losing myself

because I'm prioritizing them.

BRIT: Right.

- And I'm just tired of doing that.

Like, I really just wanna

focus on what makes me happy.

BRIT:

As you should.

- Yeah.

NARRATOR:

And that is an example of a lie of denial.

But here's the thing,

we all lie to ourselves

when it comes to love.

We say things like,

"I wanna focus on myself,"

when really all we wanna do

is think about him,

who's not focusing on us, like, at all.

We say we wanna move forward,

when really we're hoping

for a return to a romanticized past.

But is lying to yourself such a bad thing?

And can the little

love lies we tell ourselves

actually help reframe

our reality for the better?

- Oh ♪

NARRATOR:

Now another type of lie

is when two people are lying

to themselves at the same time

about how they actually

feel about one another.

Not sure what you call that.

A mutual lie of omission?

Cue Mya Jo and Nick.

- Um, where's Baylee?

- Um--

- She couldn't come?

- I don't know

what she's up to today.

- You don't know what

your girlfriend's up to today?

- No.

We haven't talked too much

these past couple days.

- Why? Sorry, I'm not tryna be nosy.

- Ah, it's alright.

So show--

Kirk's show was good.

- Did Baylee like it?

- Uh--

- Even whenever the concert was going on,

everyone's smiling and laughing

and I look at you,

and you're just pissed off

and looking at Mya Jo.

- I was just lookin' her way

I guess, I don't know.

- I don't know, I think

it's a little more than that.

- Ah, no, we're just friends.

- I don't wanna get into it anymore.

I'm just tired, I just wanna go home.

- You leavin'?

- Yeah.

- We were arguin' a little bit,

but I don't know.

I don't wanna talk about it.

- You don't have to.

NICK:

It is complicated, though.

MYA JO:

Isn't everything complicated?

- Seems like that with my life.

- Mine too.

I've seen Nick in love,

and he pours a lotta time

and effort into that person,

and you can tell that he's happy.

And with this relationship,

I don't know if happy is the word.

I would say confused.

gentle music playing ♪

Do you see anything?

- Um nothin' that's movin', no.

♪

So do you like bein' back?

- Yeah, it's nice.

It's been very, like, peaceful.

Ya know, I've been a-allowin' myself

to think, and, ya know,

figure out what's my next step

and what I wanna do.

Um, I'm thinkin' about goin' to the city.

dramatic music plays ♪

Some part of me is like, "Stay home."

But I don't know if that's,

like, the comfort inside of me

because I'm just so comfortable here.

But the risk taker in me is like,

"Go, you're young, you're single."

Ya know?

- I wish you would stay.

NARRATOR:

And that is the truth.

But if the other person

isn't ready to hear it

[Nick sighs heavily]

does it even mean anything?

Maybe that's why we lie to ourselves

because once we say the truth out loud,

there's no going back.

cheerful music playing ♪

LASHOUNDRA: I didn't tell you,

Kendell was lookin' through Kaden's phone

and some little girl was inboxing him,

"Can I give you a kiss?"

And the little girl said, "I love you."

- What they know about love?

- Hell, I don't know what love is.

So, how you know what love is?

- These kids grow up too fast for me.

These children on these phones

and iPads and everything else.

Give 'em a pen and a pencil

and let 'em write.

- Baby, sit down. Take a load off.

Sit down, have a seat.

- You just don't wanna

hear what I got to say.

- But I do listen, we do listen to you.

- No y'all don't.

- But of course, the par-parenting

is a little different.

- Children need to go outdoors and play.

But don't they--

- Kaden go outside and play.

- No, they don't.

They stay, they,

they always got a cell phone

or iPad up in their face.

That's all they know.

Cat, don't you jump over here.

- Mama, the cat ain't finna go over there.

- I don't know that.

[Lashoundra laughs]

- First of all, you raised us

what, 35, 40 years ago?

- I-- It, it don't change.

- Times have changed.

- Some things don't change,

y'all, y'all change 'em.

LASHOUNDRA: Growin' up,

my mom raised us as a single mom,

and we were taught to keep

our feelings to ourselves.

To pretend that everything is okay,

that everything is fine,

"I'm good, I got this."

And I continued that pattern

in the 12 years of my marriage.

Lyin' to myself, lyin' to my mother,

just lyin' to everybody around.

Lyin' to God, really.

And now, after our divorce,

I'm done pretendin'.

- Lemme get my fan up.

[Lashoundra laughs]

Girl, come on. Yeah, I'm-I'm listenin'.

- So-- I know.

So, you know, I've been in therapy,

and one of the biggest

things that I realized

is a part of me is, is still,

I guess, tryin' to give myself

permission to move forward.

- Mm-hm.

- I still feel some type of way

about bein' out in public

with another man.

I haven't been on a date or anything.

'Cause every time I walk forward,

I stop and turn around and look back.

Like, I haven't, I haven't

continued movin' forward,

and I feel like I lost myself.

[indistinct chatter]

NARRATOR: Lashoundra's been

telling herself little white lies

to keep her marriage afloat for years.

And now that she's finally

decided to step into

what she thinks is her truth,

what she doesn't realize is that

the grass is not always greener

on the other side.

And a realization like that

often can stop us right in our tracks.

[RV beeping]

ABBY:

Dude, what the hell?

[beeping continues]

BRIT: Oh, my God.

Is this really happening?

[Abby chuckles]

[Brit coughing]

Oh, Abby, we have a slight problem.

[RV beeping]

ABBY:

Dude, what the hell?

[beeping continues]

- I'ma pop the hood.

[blows out]

It's still smokin' bad.

[Brit muttering]

ABBY: Yeah, it smells like a*s.

[Brit chuckles]

Is it gonna, like, blow up?

- Uh, no, somethin's just off.

It looks like it could

be the radiator hose.

- Do you know what you're doing?

- Um, yeah.

are most definitely lying to themselves

about making it on time.

- Alright, let's see if she'll crank.

[RV beeping]

Okay, are you ready?

[engines turns over, starts]

NARRATOR:

But who knows,

maybe delusions of grandeur

will get them there on time.

[Abby laughs]

BRIT: We back, baby!

NARRATOR: So, here's where

we are with the Mya Jo saga.

Nick just hinted at his

true feelings for Mya Jo.

The ball's now back in her court.

Could this be the time for them

to get out of the "just friends" zone?

The only problem is

VOLLEYBALL PLAYER 1: Let's go!

[people cheering]

NARRATOR: Baylee decided

to put herself back in the game.

Oh, and then there's also Kirk.

VOLLEYBALL PLAYER 2:

[players cheering]

Now I'm stuck up in your face ♪

[indistinct shouting]

- Wanna take a break?

- Yeah.

- Hey, two of y'all.

Y'all wanna come play?

We're takin' a little bit of a break.

NICK:

So, I haven't seen ya in a little bit.

BAYLEE: Yeah.

- I'm glad that you came out.

- Yeah, me too.

- You still mad at me

after the other night?

- I mean, I can feel

there's, like, some tension.

'Cause Mya Jo and you

hang out a lot together

without me and it is kind of weird.

- I just look at it as, like, a, a friend.

She's kinda just that person.

- Yeah, but I should be that person.

gentle music playing ♪

CIARA: Did you hear about

Baylee stormin' off at the Frog Pond?

- I didn't know

she stormed off.

I just felt like there

was some weird tension,

and I tried to talk to him about it

but he kinda, like, shut me down,

so I was like,

"Okay, well, I guess it wasn't

anything serious," ya know?

- Yeah.

MYA JO:

But I don't know, somethin's off.

- Yeah.

BAYLEE:

Has anything ever happened with you guys?

Like, physically, have

y'all ever kissed or anything?

- Nuh-uh, nothin' like that.

Like I said, me and Mya Jo,

she's like a sister.

Why would I kiss my sister?

- Like, it's never weird

between Nick and I.

- Yeah.

- It's just weird between

Nick, I, and Baylee.

- Yeah.

MYA JO: And there's no reason.

CIARA: I just wonder,

maybe it's 'cause, like, you and Nick,

y'all are just so close, ya know?

And y'all have been close for a while,

so maybe that's the issue.

And then she's, like,

comin' into the picture now,

and it might just be a little weird maybe.

- Yeah, but, like,

she's coming into the picture.

I've been in the picture.

- Yeah.

- So, like, if Nick is

being honest with her,

and saying like, "Me and--

Mya Jo and I are best friends,

we've always been friends."

Nothing happened

to make her feel that way.

CIARA: Yeah.

- And I haven't done anything.

So, like, at this point,

I'm just gonna let them do them,

and not worry about

what Baylee's problem is

because, ya know, I'm enjoying,

like, spendin' time with Kirk,

and I don't want their problems

to, like, face on Kirk and I.

CIARA:

Yeah.

- And Baylee gotta get over it.

BAYLEE: It just doesn't feel

like the sister type of vibe.

- So, what can I do to make

things more comfortable for you?

- I don't know.

I think, like, your intuition

is, like, somethin'

you really gotta listen to,

and mine is telling me,

like, she's, she's a threat

to our relationship

and

it's either her or me, at this point.

It needs to be, like, a talk.

FRIEND 1:

- Hi, love. Hey.

- Thank you, thank you.

Is this, is this my drink?

- Yes.

- Yes, that's your little milkshake.

[laughs]

LASHOUNDRA: Oh, my God!

Well, let me take my time

'cause it's gonna be a long night.

[group exclaims]

It's been a while. [laughs]

FRIEND 1: What's goin' on?

FRIEND 2: You look good.

- Thank you. Mm.

FRIEND 2: You look so happy.

FRIEND 1:

How you feelin'?

- I feel good, baby, I am single, I am--

- So it's, like, official-official?

- It is official.

- Signed, sealed, delivered?

- Signed, sealed, delivered.

- Awesome, but are you ready to date,

or are you takin' it slow?

- Wait, wait. Not, not just yet.

Let's pump your brake.

[mimics brake squealing]

[group laughs]

- You have got to get outta the house.

- You want me to what?

[group laughs]

- Ooh, ooh, ooh! Look, look, look!

Don't be obvious.

[laughter]

FRIEND 2:

He's just a guy lookin' in your direction.

- Yes, he is.

- He's just over there--

- Do you want me to go?

- No! Sit down!

- Oh.

[laughter]

- Y'all got me hot and bothered.

[group laughs and chatters]

NARRATOR:

After a few martinis

and failed flirting attempts

a gut-punch truth hit LaShoundra:

that finding new love

was gonna be a whole lot

harder than she thought.

NARRATOR:

whose journey to escape her problems

has led her to, well,

the middle of nowhere.

BRIT:

Finally, a [sing-songy] drink!

muffled country music playing from bar ♪

It's kinda sketch, but--

[music muffled]

I knew I was in trouble when ♪

BOTH:

Um.

- We're here, let's do it.

- It'll do.

♪

But when I woke up this morning ♪

I was still drunk, Lord have mercy ♪

BRIT:

What a day it's been.

- I know. God, we got lost,

we almost blew up.

- And you helped me fix an RV.

- And I learned somethin' new.

[ba*ls clack]

BRIT:

We missed the rodeo, though.

[patrons chattering]

- Oh well.

- So you're not mad?

I feel like this road trip's

been, like, a fail.

- No.

- I mean, not a fail, but--

- I have, like, laughed so much, though.

I think that's what I needed, so.

- You're right.

[phone buzzing]

- Oh, my God.

- Who is "Do Not Answer?"

[patrons chattering]

[pool ba*ls clacking]

ABBY:

[clicks tongue] Trevor.

- No, don't answer that.

- Blocked.

- Blocked, bye.

BOTH:

Ew.

[both laughing]

- What, like--

- You're done.

- Beth didn't answer the phone call,

so you call me?

[Brit gasps]

- He doesn't know what he wants.

- It's like he wants

to hang out with me in private,

but then every time

I see him out in public,

he's with another girl.

If we're just friends,

then treat it as just friends.

Don't cross the line

when it's convenient for you,

and then when it's not convenient,

you go and see other people.

It's, like--

- What y'all have is not a friendship,

it's not a relationship,

it's literally a situationship.

ABBY: No.

Yeah.

- Like, what even is that? Like?

- Trust me, I wish I knew,

but I'm tired of trying

to figure it out, [chuckles]

and so, I'm

- Yeah.

- backing off, like--

- As you should.

- I just, like, want

him to leave me alone.

[chuckles]

- He's gotta go. Bye.

- I agree.

[phone buzzing]

- Block.

ABBY: Blocked.

- Bye.

- Toodeloo.

- Are you good?

- I am so good. Like, truly.

NARRATOR:

Here's the thing about lying to ourselves.

It's a temporary Band-Aid.

- On to bigger and better things.

NARRATOR: It makes us think

we're in control of how we feel.

- Well, you ready? Yeah.

BRIT: You ready?

It's time.

- Yeah. Yeah.

- Let's go.

- I'm tired.

[giggles]

Let's get the hell outta Dodge.

NARRATOR:

About the disappointments, setbacks
