01x01 - Intuition

Post by bunniefuu »

-DEBBIE: Hi.
-JENNA: God, I want to hug you.

-Hi! I just wanna...
-JENNA: Hi!

-ROBIN: Y'all are all dressed up.
-Debbie!

-Hi.
-Uh-huh. Uh-huh.

-DEBBIE: Hey, you!
-How are you?

Girl.

-Girl!
-Oh, I'm telling you.

Carrying a load right now.

Yeah, we're turning, yeah, we're turning

Yeah, we're turning
Yeah, we're turning...

[SCATTING]

ROBIN:
Something really special happens

when women connect,

share, dream, and inspire each other.

This is Turning the Tables.

-ROBIN: This is what I love.
-The time of my life, working with Debbie.

This is why I wanted to do this.

This is why I wanted to do this.
And I am gonna get going right now.

-JENNA: Yeah.
-ROBIN: Are you ready?

-DEBBIE: Yeah.
-ROBIN: Let's do this.

Yeah.

When do you sleep?

-Girl...
-When do you sleep?

[LAUGHS] I don't know.
It's a real problem getting sleep.

-I don't know.
-ROBIN: It's a real problem.

It's a problem because my mind
is working on so many things.

And finally, I'll rest, but then I wake up
at 4:00 in the morning.

I'll just wake up when it's quiet
and I can get a lot of work done

-because my husband's not asking for food.
-JENNA: Of course.

The grandbaby's not running around,
and my mother is sleeping.

-So, it's... I don't know.
-ROBIN: Oh...

But when you think
about the acting, dancing, directing...

JENNA: Directing, producing.

-Producing, mentoring.
-SOFIA: I know.

-Are we leaving anything out?
-Choreography.

-Cho... Yes. Yes. You're right, Sofia.
-The cooking.

It's the cooking and the cleaning
that nobody gets to see.

-JENNA: The mother...
-You know, people...

I told them, "Throw all these titles,
legend, icon."

I said, "Child, please.
Give that to someone else."

Honey, I've been cutting up everything
for dinner, but it's part of who I am.

And it helps me stay very anchored
and real.

-JENNA: Oh, yeah.
-Jenna?

-Yes.
-You are learning to relax with no FOMO...

-JENNA: Yeah!
-...with no fear of missing out.

-I mean, speaking of which...
-You got two little ones!

You go two little ones,
how do you do that?

Relaxing was never something
that I understood.

It's this kind of like you always
wanna stay in this sort of hustle.

And I was always a hard worker.

And then I had kids, and I,
for the first time, was forced to relax,

and sort of, be present,
and be here, and not...

-But you're still keeping very busy.
-Well, I am with my children.

I really took, like,
a good chunk of time off.

But it was so funny, I thought,

"This is what it feels like
to be relaxed and not have any FOMO."

So, it was a very wild feeling,
but I learned

that I enjoy being a homebody.
I enjoyed it for a little while.

-You know, it was really...
-ROBIN: Mm-hmm.

-Lessons for all of us.
-...a new feeling.

And you over there, missy girl.

Yes. Yes. Yes. I know with your acting,
your new music...

You know, I feel so privileged
to be able to work and do what I love.

I mean, to be here with you guys
and to be able to continue

to create art like you are doing, Debbie,

is such a privilege,
and I just feel so lucky.

And can I just say, it is such an honor
to be among the three of you.

So, thank you for having us, Robin.

-Oh, that means so much.
-Same!

I got included. I thought
she was gonna say, "The two of you."

-I got... Oh, God! Oh!
-SOFIA: Are you kidding?

ROBIN: Well, no.
But you all need that discipline.

-Discipline.
-SOFIA: Yeah. Yeah.

-JENNA: Yes.
-How has that informed you?

Oh, it's informed everything.
It's part of the fiber of my being and...

to me, discipline
is not knowing any other way

but to pour your heart and soul
into everything that you do

because you love it so much.

And someone told me a quote
about discipline...

Well, there's a classic one, right?
That's, you know,

"Genius is one percent inspiration
and 99 percent perspiration."

But I heard that, "Discipline is one
of the greatest forms of self-love.

"Because you're loving yourself enough
to give yourself everything

"that you've ever wanted."

-And I thought that was so beautiful.
-ROBIN: Mm. I love that!

-I'm gonna have to think about that.
-JENNA: I am taking that with me.

-That is...
-Beautiful.

You don't think
about that being discipline,

'cause if I gave myself
everything I wanted,

I would be eating that ice cream
every night.

-SOFIA: You're right. [LAUGHS]
-JENNA: Right.

So, discipline for me is,
"Heifer, put the spoon down.

"Put the spoon down."

But let me ask you this.
Let me ask you this in all sincerity.

I know that you've broken down
so many different barriers.

And when we talk about discipline,

about sometimes
having to hold your tongue,

sometimes having to know
that rejection can be protection.

The times that you were denied,
even though you had the ability,

so, how have you been able
to discipline yourself?

Well, it's not so much
disciplining myself,

-it's more believing in myself.
-ROBIN: Mm.

Believing in yourself.

My mom believed in me,
and she made me believe in myself.

So, when there were... big...
more than glass ceilings,

big brick walls,
she would make me understand

that this was one little place
in the universe.

And that I had to have confidence
that I was gonna go beyond.

-Beyond the borders, if you will.
-ROBIN: Yeah.

Beyond the oceans, beyond the mountains,
I would...

I could go as far as I could see.
And so, it's...

"The discipline is an inner strength
of belief," which is confidence.

And it takes a while.
It doesn't come all of a sudden.

But I had women around me who were strong.

And I had women who were not afraid.

And so, I really would
often get in trouble

because I would speak my mind.
I would not hold my tongue.

I would not stay in a place,

because my place was to be true,
be beautiful, be free.

That is my mother's mantra
that we grew up with.

-"Be true, be beautiful, be free."
-SOFIA: Be free.

Wow! And you have done that,
and are doing that.

And no one could put you in a box,
and no one can,

you know, how when someone says,
"Stay in your lane."

-"No. I'm not gonna stay in my lane."
-Yeah.

"What do you mean by that?"

-Did you, did you believe...
-JENNA: Yeah.

...that dance was going
to get you initially as far...

-No.
-...as it has?

No, no, no. I... and this is funny.
The "Stay in your own lane."

So, I started as a dancer, obviously,
living my dream.

And I was... [CHUCKLES]
...happy doing this.

And I was dancing on the Grammys,
of all places, with NSYNC.

-Stop it!
-Yes.

[LAUGHS]

-JENNA: It's true.
-ROBIN: I love that. I love that.

-Oh, by the way.
-Just by the way.

I was Justin's partner, right?

-DEBBIE: Oh, my God!
-No!

-Now, you're just showing off!
-Rewind! Let's get that tape out.

-SOFIA: Wait a second!
-Rewind.

And so, I danced my way
into all various different jobs.

And then I was approached about acting.

And when I said,
"Okay, sure, I'll try this."

At first, I said, "No way." I was, like,
"No, no, I'm just a dan..."

I... And she's, like,
"Just go on one audition." I said, "Okay."

I went on it. I ended up getting it.
It was this movie with Antonio Banderas.

-And I was, like, "Okay, I guess..."
-No big deal.

Right? I was like, it was meant to be.

But she was so funny.
My manager was, like,

"Listen, you are no longer a dancer.
You are an actress."

-"So, wipe your face clean."
-Ooh!

You know, of course,
I had the glitter eyeliner,

and, you know, I was all, like,
much like I am now, actually.

I, like... I was my...
I was my dancer self.

-She was like, "Wipe your face clean..."
-That's right.

"...and you will need to be an actress."
And I tried so hard, you guys.

I tried for years to be in this box of,

you know, who I thought she wanted
and the world wanted me to be.

And even after Step Up, it was, like,
it's a dance movie, but it was,

but you're in a hit movie,

-you need to be the actress.
-SOFIA: That's right.

It was, like, hard for me

cause I wanted to fit myself in this lane,
in this box

and then eventually one day
I just was, like, "You know,

-"I gotta be myself."
-Yeah.

Well, I have to say, your intuitions
have really served you all well.

-DEBBIE: Hmm.
-And the courage and that.

And it has really to me, has framed...

and made you the masters
of your own destinies.

-SOFIA: Mm-hmm.
-Sofia, let me ask you about trust.

When did you learn to trust yourself?

You know, as a woman in the industry,
I felt like in the beginning,

there are those certain pressures, right,
to fit into certain boxes,

or sing certain songs with certain lyrics
you're not comfortable with.

Play certain roles
that are a bit stereotypical that are...

you aren't comfortable with.

And luckily,
I had an incredibly strong mother,

who is also my partner
in all of this together.

And I'm so grateful for that.

And she always, always
gave me the strength to trust myself.

And for a second, I remember,
I was told by an executive

that I was in the business of saying no.
And that was because I...

no, I wasn't going to sing that song.
I wasn't going to play that role.

And you start doubting, right?

It's, like, "Should I not have trusted?"
But no. Absolutely not.

You have to trust who you are
and trust your gut,

because at the end of the day,
we're artists,

and we tell stories. And stories
that aren't honest to who we are,

-no one will believe them.
-Hmm.

So, I think that's where that came from
for me.

It comes through loud and clear.
And you could relate to that.

Well, yeah, that. I did one record album
called Special Look.

-SOFIA: Yes, you did.
-Yeah.

And that might be one of the most...
terrifying experiences

in my life because I had been, you know,
developed out of Howard University...

-SOFIA: Yeah
-...dance companies, Broadway.

So, I was used to, you know,
doing it for real,

like when I did Anita in West Side Story.

So, then they decide that...
I had this manager, Sandy Gallin.

He decided that I could be like
the female Michael Jackson.

That was before Janet had emerged.

-I was on Fame. Blah, blah, blah.
-Yep.

"You need to do a record album."

So, he got with Charles Koppelman,
the big producer. And I was, like, "Okay."

And, ooh, these little bubblegum songs.

-Oogey, boogey... [MUTTERS]
-[ALL LAUGHING]

And I got in the studio one day,
and I just couldn't.

They said, "We need your sound
to be this, be that."

So, finally, I was singing
the song, "Special look," and I went,

Oh, you've got that special look
A thing about ya, yeah

-They, "That's it! That's it!" Like...
-JENNA: And you thought...

-"What?"
-"Are you kidding?"

Child, they mixed me out of my own record,
that's all I can tell you.

I was like... And they said,
"Let's do another one."

I said, "Child, change the picture.
Put that one back out."

-It was hard for me because...
-Wow.

...I'm just not used
to doing anything that's not real.

But see, you trusted yourself,
to know that that wasn't right.

-I didn't keep going with that.
-No, no. It is about trust.

-And also...
-JENNA: Yeah.

...the intuition that we have as women,
as human beings.

-And we've all have that inner voice.
-SOFIA: We do.

-But do we truly listen to it?
-SOFIA: Yeah.

-But do we truly listen to it?
-SOFIA: Yeah.

When you look back, what do you...
what was that moment,

what was that... that...
Did you have that "Ah-ha"?

Did have this anytime,
that you're, like "Mm!"

"I'm gonna trust myself.
I'm gonna listen to this inner voice.

"This is where I'm going.
I don't care what anyone else is saying."

Well, you know, I think part of it
for me, Robin, honestly,

I was voted "most versatile"
in my high school class.

-Shocking.
-SOFIA: Shocking!

-JENNA: We're all surprised.
-Wait, shocker.

-ROBIN: Shocking.
-No!

I was the drum majorette,
I was in ballet class,

I was in the honor roll,
and my boyfriend was on the football team.

I was doing all of these things, so...
but I think the biggest thing about me

is that I've always been curious
about what I didn't know.

-SOFIA: Hmm.
-JENNA: Mm-hmm.

And I would always be willing to say yes
to something

even if I didn't quite know how to do it.

I would love the challenge
of figuring it out.

Ooh!

-DEBBIE: And that's a big part...
-Staying curious.

...of my journey.

Saying yes to something
that you don't quite know what it is,

is a good thing because you...

In the artistic world,
we're like explorers.

-SOFIA: Yeah.
-You're on a journey.

You go into a dark space, a studio.
Song is not written.

-SOFIA: No.
-What are you feeling? What is it that...

What melody is humming? What idea?
What are you trying to talk about?

What are you singing about?
And then it'll start to come.

And then the dance will come,
or the words, or whatever it is.

It's being explorers
and willing to step into territory

-that's not quite charted.
-JENNA: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

-SOFIA: I love that.
-Are you being a sponge over there?

-I'm trying to.
-JENNA: I guess.

I'm trying to. I mean,
I'm in the presence of such greatness.

And I try to learn
and grow as much as I can.

So, yes, I'm here just being a sponge
and listening to all this glory.

-Well, you have such a tremendous gift.
-SOFIA: Thank you.

-You're already on a journey.
-SOFIA: That means... Thank you.

-So, it's just about your choices.
-Thank you.

Can I just tell you that I...

My mom has always used you as an example
for me.

-Really?
-And, I mean, Debbie Allen.

-I know!
-SOFIA: And I remember watching...

-Same.
-...an interview of yours.

I think it's from 1985.
And you start the interview by saying,

"Did I ever think
that I would be in a big studio,

"an actor, a dancer,

"a choreographer, a songwriter, director,
producer, mother? Yeah. I did."

[ALL EXCLAIM]

-That was amazing!
-SOFIA: "Yeah, I did."

Wow. It's because of women like you
that I am here.

And that, you know, countless women
that will come after us can do the same.

So, yes, I shall continue
to be a sponge for as long as I can.

-JENNA: So good!
-But the thing is...

But you say the sponge,
but you're not just being a sponge,

you're contributing as well.
That's what I want you to know.

-SOFIA: Thank you.
-I know that, ‘cause I'm the same way.

-That I... "Success leaves clues."
-SOFIA: Sure.

So, you listen, you take those things,
you personalize it,

like, "How can I use this?
I don't wanna be you. I don't want...

"I'm just trying
to be the best me I can be."

-And that's a 24-hour a day job.
-JENNA: Yeah.

But it's very unique
when you can be in that position

where you're at a certain level,
but yet you're still a student.

-Yeah. It's exciting.
-And embracing that.

ROBIN: When was a time,

-I'm gonna start with you, Jenna...
-JENNA: Mm-hmm.

...a time when you felt fear
and you did it anyway?

-Oh, God.
-You pushed through it.

How long do we have?

[ALL LAUGH]

I have felt... I can't tell you
how many times I've had...

Oh, gosh. So many times.

Because in my life,
it's been an ongoing theme

that I, sort of, jump in before
I've actually thought about what I've...

-SOFIA: Sure.
-You know, I'm like, I'm already mid-dive

before I've actually really...

I got the feeling. I was like,
my intuition says, "Go," so I'm going,

-"but I haven't really..."
-Internalized it.

Internalized it
or I haven't been fully ready.

Most recently, I mean,
even with World of Dance,

I remember, I... They...
I had never hosted anything in my life.

And Jennifer Lopez calls me and says,
"I wanna give you this...

"this... I think you should host a show."
I said, "I've never hosted anything."

"Well, we're filming tomorrow.
We're starting in two days."

That's what it was.
I had... I just jumped in.

I mean, I was managing an entire stage,
and a backstage, and dancers, and,

try... talking and managing the judges,
and getting producers in my ear,

-wearing, you know, the ear wing.
-SOFIA: Yeah.

I mean, I thought,
like this is gonna make me crazy.

Someone's talking in my ear
the whole time.

I can't focus. But I just did it.
And I was really...

I remember feeling like walking
on that stage, and going, like,

"Oh, God. I'm actually really scared
right now."

-I don't know what to do, you know?
-Isn't it a good feeling, though?

It was a good adrenaline rush.

And, you know, I had just separated
in my relationship,

so, no one knew it,
but I was dealing with that.

And I had to go the next day.
It was literally the next day.

And be like,
"Okay. I'm on the stage and I'm here."

And I've noticed it with a lot of dancers,
there's this quality of, like...

There's just a fearlessness, there's a...

-SOFIA: A thousand percent.
-"Yeah, I'm gonna do it anyway."

You know, you dance on a little square
with rain, in high heels,

-and you're risking your life...
-Almost the impossible.

-...you're like, "I'm gonna do it anyway."
-Yeah.

-I don't know how you all do that.
-So, I just...

-It is true.
-...did it anyway.

And, you know, then you realize
then you get over the fear of it,

and you're in the process of it,
and then you just try to work on it.

And I don't listen to a lot of fear.

-And I don't let it stop me too much.
-ROBIN: Don't let it stop you.

For the two of you, when did you...
and yet you still pushed through.

You felt that fear,
and when most people would have said,

"That would have been a stop sign,"
you went right through it?

I was... my first big Broadway show
was Raisin.

It was an adaptation
of Raisin in the Sun.

And I was, I had met Donald McKayle,
the director, the summer before,

-in a dance-festival.
-JENNA: Mm.

And by the time I came to audition,
all the lead parts were cast.

And he let me audition
to be the understudy for Beneatha.

-Mm.
-And I was excited to do it.

And I rehearsed all the time with the...
Helaine Head was my director.

So, finally, the week before we closed
to go towards New York...

the young lady I was understudying
decided she wanted

to take the weekend off,
and go hang out with her boyfriend.

So, they said, "Okay, Debbie, you're on."
I'm like...

panicked. “What? I'm on? Oh, my God.”

And it was so frightening and exciting.

The whole dance company
was rooting for me.

And in-between every scene,

they were, like,
reminding me of what I had to do.

I said, "I got it. I got it. I got it!"

And then I'd get out there,

and all of a sudden,
the audience started laughing.

And they had never laughed
in these scenes before.

-SOFIA: Oh, gosh. Oh, no.
-And then, it was like,

"Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Am I messing up?"
But it was... turned out that it was good.

They found the... I found the comedy

-that hadn't been there before.
-ROBIN. Mm.

I got through it
and everybody was excited.

I was so glad it was over.

Then I got called
into the producer's office,

and I'm like, "Oh, God. I'm fired.
I know, I'm fired."

And they said, "You were really good."
I said, "I was?"

They said, "Yeah." I said, "Okay."

And they said, "Well, would you like
to play the part?"

-I'm like...
-ROBIN: What?

I said, "What?"
Girl, they paid me 50 dollars more a week.

That was it. And I got the role.
I was so happy. I would have paid them.

Oh, my goodness.

That was plowing
through every moment of it.

-ROBIN: Yeah.
-It was like,

exciting and fear, it was all of that.

-And that it was different.
-Yeah.

It was not the same reaction
that we had heard every night.

Yeah. The stage, too.

Yeah, the stage. There's nothing like it.

-SOFIA: There's nothing like that.
-Being on a stage, as we all know,

-there's always a little bit of fear.
-SOFIA: Always.

And always excitement,
and always performers pushing through.

-You know, it's every single time.
-SOFIA: Always.

But it's so fulfilling when you do
at the end.

-DEBBIE: Yeah.
-And I feel like

the fear is like
the butterflies that you need.

-Yes.
-Or in the best way, right,

when it's that kind of fear,
then it kind of fuels you.

-Otherwise, it's paralyzing, right?
-Right, it could be.

-It really could be.
-And the paralyzing one...

my mom always says, "Your dreams
are on the other side of fear.

"Just take the leap."

And in those moments where you,

-you know, we've all had them.
-It's so true.

Recently, I had one where I remember
this night before a big performance

and I was crying
'cause I thought I had no voice.

You know, singers and their voices.
And I was like,

I've been rehearsing all day and...

I had to do, like, you know,
nine hours of singing the next day and...

-You do it.
-ROBIN: Yeah.

Some... You do it.
You believe in yourself.

You push through.
You prepare and then you do it.

-And at the end of it, it's so fulfilling.
-ROBIN: Yeah.

It's so fulfilling.

My mama told me, "When fear knocks,
let faith answer the door."

-Ooh, I love that!
-SOFIA: Beautiful.

-Now, that's a good one.
-Guys, are we writing these down?

-I need t-shirts.
-All these little...

"When fear knocks,
faith is gonna answer the door."

Yes.

As my older sister says,
"We have our parents,

our ancestors, who are cheering us on
from their heavenly balcony.

-"And knowing what they have gone...
-SOFIA: Yes.

-...to do before." But enough about me!
-No, no, no!

I'm gonna ask you a question, though.

Well, no.
It is called Turing the Tables, okay.

-Yes.
-I wanna know your...

What was your biggest interview
that gave you a little stage fright

-or something? What?
-Okay.

Ooh, I'm gonna get real right here.

-Yeah. Be real.
-SOFIA: Yeah, please.

Ooh, I can't believe I'm gonna share this.

There's something about your eyes,
you guys, but you all... I... Okay.

I was... ill,
but people didn't know I was ill.

-Mm-hmm.
-ROBIN: It was the second time around.

And I was asked to go
to the White House

to interview...
then president, Barack Obama.

And...

they said that he was going
to most likely change his stance

on marriage equality.

I had not come out yet.

-SOFIA: Oh.
-Oh.

So, here I am going to interview him.

JENNA: Mm.

And I was like, oh, you know,
"Are people gonna ask me about..."

-I wasn't ready.
-SOFIA: Yeah.

I mean, my bosses, my family,
and everybody.

If I was walking down the street
with Amber,

I'd introduce her as my girlfriend.
I wasn't hiding but I wasn't...

-Ready for the world.
-I wasn't ready for the world.

And I was fearful, I was like...
I almost said,

"I'm not going to do the interview."

And I'm thinking,
"Robin René Roberts, are you... What?"

This man is going to change the course
of so many lives,

and you're afraid
that you're gonna be outed?

No. And I marched there,
and I did the interview,

and I'll never forget sitting across
from him and saying,

"President Obama, have you changed
your stance on marriage equality?"

-And he said, "Yes."
-SOFIA: Oh, that's great.

So that was a good turning of the tables.

-I have never shared that.
-SOFIA: Thank you for sharing that.

I've shared about doing the interview,
but I've never shared

-that I was fearful because I had not.
-JENNA: Personal.

But who better than you?
You would understand the meaning.

And the Obamas, they knew,
and he wanted to have...

And people often...

And people were very receptive
that I was doing the interview.

They never questioned my sexuality
for doing it.

They were just pissed
that they didn't get the interview.

-Yeah.
-It was just good ol', you know?

-You know how competitive. Which was fine.
-Yes.

And I asked them later. I said,
"Why did you pick me?" And he said,

"Because I could have a conversation
with you."

Other reporters would have made it
about themselves.

-SOFIA: Sure.
-They would have made it an interrogation.

I wanted to be able to give my response
fully, why I've decided to do this.

-Okay.
-Let's open up,

-and be honest and transparent...
-ROBIN: Yeah.

-Yeah.
-...and that's beautiful.

-ROBIN: Thank you.
-Thank you for sharing that.

And... it is even magnified
with the three of you.

I mean, your fears, your insecurities
are under a magnifying glass.

You know, people want
to dissect every little thing

and you wanna cling like I did.
You want your privacy.

When you talk about being... public,

public figures,
and trying to find that balance.

You come from people
who have achieved so much

-and are known themselves.
-SOFIA: Sure.

How have you been able to walk that line?

To be able to be public
but to also guard your privacy?

Yeah. That's a...
It's been interesting because...

in my world of being,
I've never walked around

wearing sunshades or with bodyguards,
or any of that.

I've always been in the open.
My children were with me all the time.

And people could come up to me.

And the hardest part for me
was with my kids,

because I would be taking them to the zoo,
or to wherever, and people would come up.

And they were like,
"Mom, come on. Come on."

I'm like, "All right."
I said, "I'm sorry."

I was holding one child,
had the other one in hand,

and this woman just wanted my autograph.

I said, "Sweetheart,
can you see I don't have a free hand?"

"Well, I'll hold your baby."
I'm like, "No, sweetie,

-"I don't know you."
-JENNA: Yeah.

-JENNA: "You're not holding my baby."
-"No, you won't hold my baby. No. No."

So, it's just a matter of, you know,
fans are adoring you and knowing that,

that's what that is.

But aren't there some things
you just wanna keep to yourself?

-JENNA: Yeah.
-And it's okay?

I think the Instagram world
has made people feel like

they gotta text and tweet
and show everything that they do.

And what is left for you
if you show everything?

What is left for you?

It's a... it's a balancing act
and it's okay to change.

That's one thing I realized myself.

I was like, I used to feel one way,
I might feel a little different.

-That's okay.
-ROBIN: Yeah.

It's all about what
you feel comfortable with.

-I want messy.
-Yeah. I like the real...

The world of the influencers
and social media,

I think confused us for a second

because that line
kind of blurred a bit, right?

People were able to enter
our personal life in a different way.

As long as what you put out there
is honest and true,

and it's the moments that you wanna share
with the world,

whether it's moments in your career,
moments with your family,

whatever it is,
but authenticity is everything.

Yeah. And some people do wanna share
every ounce of their life

and that's authentic to them.

Look at Deb. You're rolling your eyes
over there, going like...

-JENNA: Debbie's like, "Not me."
-But it's true. But it's true.

-I'm a little old-school.
-ROBIN: It's true.

-No judgment.
-Yeah.

I know you don't like labels

-but you are an icon.
-Oh, Lord.

-JENNA: Yes, you are.
-ROBIN: You're an icon.

-She's the definition of an icon.
-Yes. Yes.

-Icon. Iconic...
-In every way, and always.

You wouldn't have said that last week
when that pipe broke under my sink

in the guest bathroom.

And I was on my knees, bailing water,
trying to get it

before it flushed the whole house.
Norman was walking the dog.

-Honey, please. It was a sobering event.
-[JENNA LAUGHING]

I'm sure you were iconically, though.

You know you were whipping it.

-Exactly. [LAUGHS]
-[ALL LAUGHING]

-I could keep talking to you guys forever.
-JENNA: I know, we're like...

-ROBIN: I know.
-I know, it's just peaceful.

There's nothing more precious
than giving of your time.

And to learn more about people
that I have admired for various reasons

because of your talent,
but to get to know who you are,

and for you all to share that,
I appreciate it very much.

And I had a blessing of writing a song
with India Arie.

SOFIA: Oh! You tell 'em!

If I had hair here
it'd be flipping right now. Hello!

-[LAUGHS]
-JENNA: Say what?

-Wow.
-It's called "A Beautiful Day."

"Life is a journey.
It's not a destination.

"There are no mistakes.
Just chances we've taken."

-SOFIA: Yeah.
-JENNA: Yes.

"Lay down your regrets
because all we have is now."

-SOFIA: Beautiful.
-And right now is beautiful...

-It's beautiful.
-...to be with you all.

-Wow.
-JENNA: Thank you.

ROBIN: Thank you very much.

-Thank you, Robin.
-I appreciate that.

JENNA: Thank you.

Debbie, it has been forever
since I've seen you.

-Forever. Since I saw you up in Vancouver.
-JENNA: Vancouver.

The Witches, it was the best.

-Remember, when I had to go to the doctor?
-Yes. Yes!

-DEBBIE: Do you remember that day?
-Yes.

I kept seeing this black thing in my eye.
I said, "Get a doctor over here."

And so, the doctor came. And I said,
"Honey, in a minute, in a minute."

I got it all set up and then he said,

"If you don't go
to the hospital right now..."

-JENNA: You're gonna lose your sight.
-"...you might go blind."

So, I went from going, "Here, here," to...

-[MIMICS CRYING]
-[ALL LAUGHING]

I forgot.
