When we go to competitions,
because of how we look,
we get underestimated
a lot of the time.
For most
of figure skating's history,
it's been predominantly White.
Black figure skaters
have been the exception.
A very, very specific exception.
There's, like, Debi Thomas.
There's Rory Flack.
There's Surya Bonaly.
Surya Bonaly did something
no one else could do.
She did that amazing backflip
and landed on one skate.
[audience cheering]
[Ila] Even though
they banned it,
they were all beautiful skaters,
all skaters that had to claw
their way to where they landed.
And it shouldn't be like that.
And so with
figure skating in Harlem,
we've kind of opened up
the sport
to a wider net of people.

We have a very lively group.

[Ila] You know, there's so many
different personalities.
There's not one dull moment
with these kids.

I joined the program
when I was five years old.

[Sam] Sometimes people are like,
"I wanna go to the Olympics."
Is that your goal,
to go to the Olympics?
I'm not interested
in going to the Olympics.
I feel like figure skating,
it's not something
I would continue,
like, in my adult years.
I feel like I'll be too old
for that then.
But I do love figure skating.
I've always wanted to pursue,
like, acting or theatre
because I just like performing.

[Tori] As a skater or performer,
you want to be able to,
like, express your emotions.
I just need to keep practicing
until I get better at it.
So, when the time comes to,
like, perform
for the competition,
it's like,
I'm just gonna give it my all.
When I start
performing on the ice,
I just feel

What I like about figure skating

so you're just cooling off,

what I think about
when it comes to skating.

to turn 17 soon.

to feel like.

and closer to my senior year,
which I'm scared of

growing up and stuff.
I'm actually trying
to be more confident.
I feel like
that's my main goal this season.

to me in a way.

set a good example for her,
since my mom literally,

into me anyway,

I was very nervous,

but I made it.

[Tori] Adriana is so good
at skating.
She's literally, like,
working on an axle right now.
So, she's, like,
ahead of all of us.

I honestly find it, like,
really impressive.
Like, the way she skates,
is, like, insane.
[Adriana] When I'm skating
to something,
you're just so into the music.
You're just
only doing what's there
and what's in front of you,
and it kind of makes me happy.
For some of my teammates,
skating might be just a hobby,
but for me, it's different.
I don't know
if I have the chance
to go to the Olympics, but that
would definitely be my dream.

the biggest goal right there.

and then they'll go
to our academic center
for an enrichment curriculum.

and those are the girls who,
they put in extra work.

we're getting ready
for their biggest competition
of the year.

We just want them to skate
the best that they can skate
and just, like, end
the competition season
skating strong.

more than she should.

When she was young,
she was
a little delay in speech.
Everybody was always
better than her.
And so she had to keep working,

But what we told her

[Adrianna] Before I joined FSH,
my other team

so I felt like I didn't fit in.
Seeing a team
with people of color
is very different.
I think that's why
my mom was interested
in enrolling me...

that I could really connect
with those here.
When I went to Japan,
my grandma,
she got me this
as a good luck charm.
So, like, I carry this
when I go
to ice skating competitions
so that I don't feel,

when I was about six.
And then I started coaching.
And now, I'm 20.
It was my life
for, like, 14 years.
And now, it's my job.
And the kids are like...
my students, but...
somewhat like
a little sister sometimes.

to advocate for them
and what they want.
And because I'm still, like,
very new to coaching.
If I know something
is challenging,
I'm like, "Is this, like--
"Are you comfortable?
Do you have a different idea?"
Or sometimes
I just don't know what to do.

that's our biggest setback.
We're competing against people
with, like, 12 to 16 members.
They have even more than that,
because they have alternates.

devoted to the sport.

at a really big event
in Lake Placid.

that you're magnificent?

a big show coming up.

I'm hoping that I get my solo.
I just want to, sort of make up
for last year.
So, we really want to see
you just go for it.

I feel really burned out.
The ice show's about to happen,
on top of schoolwork,
on top of, like, my APs.

[Vashti] The girls forget that
they have such
long days on the ice,
and they need
to take care of themselves.
[Raquea] We're gonna bring
these people to tears
'cause they're gonna see
brown girls on the ice
like they've
never seen us before.
[Ashley] The whole idea
of just leaving the nest
and being on my own
is pretty scary for me.
[Andrea] It's always been
a dream of ours
to be able to share
a level of impact
on a global scale.
[Ila] Skating is so hard.
You put in years of work to see
one thing to fruition.
