but I just fell in love
with atchison.

Adam dilgert,
who was a german immigrant --

he was a contractor
and a stonemason.

He basically built
the foundation of atchison

and built this house
for his family.

homes have an imprint on them,

Adam was not the nice guy.

He had k*lled
his brother ferdinand.

We were noticing shadow people.

Rob: She just appeared
around this corner

and walked right across.

And I saw this blackbird
laying there.

Looked like the eyes

It's absolutely horrifying.

in atchison.

It's a town
with a lot of history.

Atchison was founded in 1854.

Man: This was a jumping-off
point for heading west.

The number of tragic deaths
happened here in this community.

Man #2: Atchison does have a lot
of places that people

seem to be creeped out by.

It just always seems like
there's something supernatural

or paranormal
just, like, lurking.

Keli: I don't know what it is
about this place,

but I just fell in love
with atchison.

And in 2014, this house
was on the market.

Rob:
The house was abandoned.

It was rundown.

It had been vacant for years.

Then I decided to restore it
completely.

For about the last five years,

it has just been
one thing after another.

And the more work
we did on the house,

the more activity
we experienced.

It was really difficult
to keep a contractor

for any amount of time.

Our current contractor --

he's had experiences
in this house

that have actually
scared him away.

If I can't get someone
in here to fix whatever it is,

I don't know what I'm gonna do.

Shippy: I'm in atchison, kansas,

The whole town is rumored
to be haunted.

One of the most notorious cases
in the country,

the sallie house,
also happens to be here.

But that's not why I'm here.

I'm here to help keli and rob.

Keli and her brother rob
purchased

an old historic property.

As soon as they started
to do renovations,

a slew of activity
just exploded in their home.

So we're here to see
if we can help find out

what's really happening
in their house,

identify these spirits,
and see if we can help them out.

So I'm gonna mic you guys up

My brother rob
moved up from tennessee.

He's very handy, you know,
working on the house.

But it was just one thing
after another.

He hasn't been able to
stay here.

Shippy: Lot of character
in this old house, huh?

The house got me with
wanting to restore it

to its original beauty.

I started researching
the history of the house

and found out that adam dilgert,

who was a german immigrant,
had come to atchison

and built the home
for his family.

Adam dilgert --
he was a contractor

and a stonemason.

And there's not a culvert,
a bridge, foundation around here

that he didn't have his hand in.

So he basically built
the foundation of atchison.

And then what was
really weird, steve --

one of the contractors
was downstairs

pulling boards down,

which is right under
what would have been

the living room in 1880.

And he said, "keli,
couple pair old shoes

fell out of
the floorboards."

so he said, "you want me
to throw them out?"

and I said, "no, I don't
want you to throw them out.

Save them."

well, I was researching.

These are adam's cavalry boots

for when he had joined
the union army.

Europeans, when they would build
a home, for protection,

they would put shoes
under the floorboard,

in the hearth, or in the walls,

or children's toys or something.
I see.

So when he built
the house in 1880,

they put them
under the floorboards

for that protection.

So shortly after
they found his old shoes,

we were noticing shadow people

out of the corner of our eye.

So the first time
we saw the shadow,

we were both talking
to each other.

Just appeared around this corner

and walked right across.

- Just glided across.
- Yep.

Shippy: The people that
you referred to --

the shadow people...
Keli: Right.

...Do they ever
look your way at all?

Was there any -- no.
Just went straight across.

I see.

Do they ever do anything
to interact with you

or let you know
that they see you

or communicate with you?

I was down in the basement,

standing at the bottom
of the steps,

and my pants were pulled.

Really?
And I was like, "holy..."

and this was in the basement?

In the basement.

It scared the **** out of me.

I was in the military.
I did 21 years --



Can hold my own...

If I have to.

But how do you fight
something you can't see?

And that is when it gets spooky.

The basement room --
that room down there --

that's a whole different story.

that is the epicenter
of activity in their home.

As we started speaking,
keli became overwhelmed.

It's emotional,
overwhelming right now.

and I can't describe it.

to pull her out, guys.

Shippy: Something seems to be
drawn to keli.

I mean, that's a fact.

I mean, the heat was radiating
right off of her.

I did expect to see
something like this.

I just never expected
to see numbers this high

in a matter of seconds.

Something in that room
is that powerful.

But what is it?
I don't know.

We have a lot of research to do.

We're only gonna get there
through investigation

and information.

to begin the investigation

at keli and rob's house,
but first,

I've set up a meeting to speak
with their contractor, joey.

The activity's gotten so bad

he refuses to continue
working on the home.

happened to you in that home?

Just all kinds of
different things, really,

anything from footsteps
to being grabbed and pulled on.

So, you physically are pulled.

And when you're walking up
out of the staircase,

it's trying to pull you
back down in the basement.

One of the first ones
I would remember would be

standing in the parlor
and banging on the floor

like somebody's got a stick
or broomstick or something,

banging on the floor
right underneath my foot.

It doesn't matter
what I'm doing.

It just -- it's a random,
random day.

Just depends on,

I guess, which one of them
feels like messing with me.

And I do get the impression
there's a lot more than one.

Dead blackbird really did me in.

That day, went in the house,

and I saw this blackbird
laying there.

Looked like the eyes
had been taken out.

The body was still soft
and moving and whatnot,

and it was --
it was pretty creepy.

It kind of got
the best of me, you know.

Shippy: If we were able to help
remove whatever that is,

would you continue to help them
work on that house?

It's been roughest six months
of my life

being back and forth
out of that house.

I don't think
I could do it, honestly.

After talking with joey,

I definitely have
a lot of concerns,

especially that story he told us

about finding that blackbird
with its eyes removed.

I believe there could be
something evil in that home.

what I'd like to do to cover
as much ground as we can --

I'd like to set up
on some key parts of the home.

Those shoes that they found --

I'd like to put a k-ii meter
there, possibly a rem pod,

just let the cameras run,

cover as much as we can up here
with those cameras,

and then just go straight
to the basement.

That basement's gonna be
the focal point for sure.

Of course, we're gonna
go down there

with digital recorder,
emf detector,

look for any spikes in the
magnetic field, stuff like that.

But specifically, we're looking
for temperature fluctuations.

But we do need
to get some cameras

set up on different spots
before we head down there.

and basically this device acts
as a proximity meter.

If any energy gets close to it,

it'll start to alert
of something being present

with lights and sound.

to set it off.

If we start to get spikes,

we can use that to try to gage
whether or not

we're experiencing
some type of phenomenon.

one of the most active homes

I've ever investigated.

People believe that the town
itself is literally haunted.

of this puzzle

to figure out what's happening
here in this city.

and knows a ton

about its interesting history.

What can you tell me
about atchison?

So this was as far north
you could go

during the overland wagon trains
without going up to iowa.

So being on the missouri river,
a lot of people were coming over

by ferry, loading the overland
wagon trains, and moving north.

So they kind of were the reason
the town began to develop.

And then a lot of people
ended up becoming merchants

'cause they realized, "well,
I don't want to move north.

I can sell to people
that are moving north."

at one point, it almost had,

you know,
close to 30,000 people.

Now it's just
a little over 10,000.

So why do you think, maria,
that atchison has

such a high level
of paranormal activity

in such a small village?

There's a lot of different
theories behind

why atchison is haunted.

But the major theory is that
because most of our town

is built of limestone.

So, limestone is porous
and supposedly can hold spirits,

or they can move about freely
throughout the limestone.

Limestone, basically --

I mean, we know
in the paranormal field

that it's like --
it's a conduit.

The basement foundation
at the dilgert house

is all limestone,

and probably most of
the homes here are,

I guess, depending on
when they were built.

And people talk about that
quite a bit

with the sallie house,
particularly in the basement.

And the basement of
the sallie house is limestone,

so it goes back to
that theory again

that spirits can
move about freely.

Every paranormal investigator
has heard

of the infamous sallie house.

What I've always heard is that

there was some type of doctor
that lived in the house

and a little girl named sallie
that died there.

So, the legend that's longtime
been told in atchison

about a young mother
rushing to the doctor's office

in the middle of the night.

Her daughter's
in tremendous pain.

Her stomach is hurting.

Her appendix had burst before
the anesthesia can take effect.

He has to begin
operating on her.

And so her last memory
is of this man

that she believes is hurting her

instead of helping her.

In the '90s,
when the pickmans lived there,

they claimed to see sallie.

She presented herself to them,
told them her age,

and then he drew a rendition
of what he said she looked like,

which is this.
This is his picture here

for two years,
he would talk about

how he would get scratched
in the house.

He would feel something
push him.

And I think the final straw
was when he was upstairs,

and he felt something push him

and send him
kind of over the railing.

And that's when he was like,
"I can't live here anymore."

so since 2004,
nobody has lived in the house.

So who actually owns
the property now?

Did the city take it back, or is
somebody possessing the home?

Yeah, so when the pickmans
lived there,

les smith owned the house,
and he still owns it today.

Do you think there's any way
we could get in contact

with this guy?

Yeah, absolutely.

could be a connection

between the sallie house
and the dilgert house

because of that limestone.

As a paranormal investigator,

I've been hearing about
the sallie house for years,

but everyone in atchison
has their own experience,

and I want to hear from them

walking past the sallie house.

the sallie house,

I've seen how powerful
the haunting is here,

but I haven't found anything

that connects it
to the dilgert house.

to help keli and rob,

to learn more about its origins,
when it was built,

and just more information
in general,

'cause I truly believe
that the history of the home

holds the key
to the activity today.

What exactly can you tell me
about the dilgert family?

Chris: Adam dilgert kind of
laid the foundation

for the community.

He had a limestone quarry

and was a unique character
for the time. [ laughs ]

he was a big guy,
and he had a big personality.

He was german-speaking.

Sounds like he was a character.

Let me ask you
something real quick.

How many deaths
do you think have occurred

in the dilgert home that
you were able to document?

Multiple people.

I think there are at least

two daughters, mother,
and the husband, possibly,

of the same family all died

while they were certainly
living at that home, so...

Wow. So there's been a lot
of death in the dilgert house.

Mm-hmm.

What exactly caused
the death of adam?

He had gangrene set in.

Once gangrene sets in,
you have to really

aggressively try to solve that.

And they did at least two,
maybe three operations,

you know, amputating parts
of his legs and feet.

You know,
that eventually k*lled him.

Wow! That had to be
a painful way to die.

One of the things
hadn't been mentioned to me,

but in 1880, adam dilgert
k*lled his brother ferdinand.

There were brothers
living in the same town.

Adam was prosperous.

Ferdinand apparently had,
you know, financial troubles.

And adam was taking care of him.

So I don't know if there was
something about money.

Adam, when he drank too much --

he was not the nice guy
that everyone saw

most of the time.

Apparently,
that led to the slap.

His slaps were
what k*lled ferdinand.

Do you think he intended
to hurt his brother that bad?

Maybe it was more than
just a slap.

The grand jury,
or what would have been

a version of a grand jury
at the time,

apparently said
they couldn't say for sure.

They said it was
just an accident.

And were it today, almost surely

he would have been convicted of
manslaughter. Manslaughter, yeah.

I think it was a black mark
on adam dilgert

for a while after that.

The dilgert family --
I mean, it's very complex.

There's a lot of layers
going on here.

The fact that adam accidentally
k*lled his brother,

then debt is in the family --

this information will definitely

help my investigation immensely.

That's what kept happening
when I investigated this house.

It was a constant chase.

This is the time to speak up

What I'm sincerely getting
from him

is that he didn't intend

I think the real reason
is his temper.

There was money involved,
but that the brother

also didn't respect him enough.

And that's what drove him
over the edge.

the main areas of activity

that we experienced
on the first night.

The shoes are very meaningful.

There is some importance
to this.

You said he was a builder.
Right? Yes.

You see, most of the builders
in germany were masons,

and they did a lot of rituals.

I think he used these shoes
for ritual.

In what way?

Claudia:
Had significance,

and they were buried
for a purpose,

almost like an anchor
to say, we landed here.

We are home.
This is our home."

he bound that family
to the house beyond the grave.

Shippy: As you're telling,
look at this.

Here I'm getting chills again.
