and two of them are adopted.

We have three amazing children.

Judah is our biological son,
and he is ten.

Jesse is seven.

We adopted him from China
when he was 16 months.

when we adopted her from India.

We already love you.

We're planning to adopt another child
as soon as possible from Hungary.

We are dying to find
some more space in our house.

This is my book station.

The kids' rooms are stuffed to the brim.

So we don't know how to find space
for another child.

I homeschool the kids in our living room,
so space is super tight.

We just want to give our kids
the best life possible.

[Susan] But we are really struggling

with finding the space
in our home to be able to do that.

Well, we've definitely
got our work cut out for us.

that we start our living in.

-It's a little under 1,200 square feet.

And we have three bedrooms,
and we have two full baths.

So kind of point me...
Where are we right now?

I feel like I'm in the living room,
but I'm not quite sure.

Step one foot over here,
and you're in the living room.

But one foot over here,
and you're in our classroom.

-Our homeschool classroom.
-[Mikel] Got it.

So you teach in here.
But you need a lot of space to teach.

-You do, yes.
-I mean, arts and crafts,

and science, and history, and everything.

How does this function for you like that?

Um, well, it's tricky.

I taught school for 15 years,
actually, before Judah was born.

I knew that one day, if I had a chance
to be able to educate my own children,

that I would like to be able
to do that since I have the skill set.

So, definitely trying
to take three different ages

and consolidate that
has been very, very tricky.

Where does everyone sit?

-So, you're over there.
-[Mikel] You sit there?

-Go to your desk and show them.
-[Mae] This is where I'm sitting.

-[Susan] This is my desk.
-In the middle of the classroom?

[Susan] Well, yeah, this is it.

All my curriculum materials are stored
right back here, but as you can see,

anything that's on Mae's desk
has to be moved out of the way

to be able to get to them.

-We've got to move the desk in order to...
-[Susan] You have to... Exactly.

And what is this bin of objects?

So, this is pretty much our storage,
all of our storage area.

We tried to maximize it the best we could.

We're kind of at the limits, though.
Obviously we're pushing it.

So, what would your idea be
to totally transform this space?

When people walk in, we want this
to be a space where it's peaceful,

it's inviting, we can be hospitable.

I think that I would just love
to be able to reclaim a living room,

and be able to have a family space.

Is there another place in here
that you might use for a classroom?

There really isn't.

There is a basement space downstairs,
but I prefer to call it the dungeon.

-That's more of a dungeon down there.
-[Brooks] It's dark, wet, and nasty.

-It is definitely the dungeon, for sure.
-[Ati] Okay.

So tell us the layout of the house,
and where does everyone sleep?

We have three bedrooms.
Susan and I have one that we have.

Judah and Jesse, they have their room.
They have bunk beds.

And we have Mae,
who's in the other bedroom.

But we also have a fourth
that's on the way.

So we're in the process
of an adoption right now.

-[all] Oh, wow!
-[Jason] Yeah.

We need a place for our fourth child
to come in and be a part of the family.

-[Jessica] Where is this baby gonna sleep?
-In the hallway!

In the hallway?

-[Ati] Are you gonna share your room?
-No.

-[Ati] No?
-Yes, you are.

[Brooks] Mae.

-[Mae] What?
-Can you show me your room?

-[Mae] Okay.
-I wanna see this.

Holy cow! So, this is your room?

-[Brooks] This is Mae's room?

This is amazing! Okay, show me around.
What's your favorite thing in this room?

There's some kind of net up here
in the corner

that's 25 feet off the ground
that you can't get to.

So, actually, those stuffed animals
really are not used very much at all

because they're just so high up there
and so hard to reach.

What you've done in here is amazing.

You've hacked everything
in here that you possibly can.

You know how I like to be childlike.

If I were Mae, I would want to grab
my stuffies and toys whenever I wanted.

But right now,
there's just no space to do that.

We need to fix this situation
not just for Mae,

but for the other child who's gonna live
in that room with her as well.

As your family keeps
expanding and expanding,

the spaces seem to be
getting smaller and smaller.

And it's hard for just one child.

Can you imagine once we bring
another child in here?

The chaos.

So, tell me who you adopted first.

[Susan] Jesse was our first adoption.

And then we just knew

that there were so many children out there
that were in need of a home,

and in need of even more than a home.
In need of a family.

-It's so admirable what you're doing.
-[Susan] Thank you for saying that.

But I think from our perspective,

we're the ones that are receiving
a triple blessing from this.

Really and truly.

We are hoping
we could adopt another little girl.

And the plan is that she would
share the room with Mae in here.

-Somewhere in here.
-[Susan] Yes. That is the plan.

So, we got to get this place ready.

-Awesome. Thank you very much.

[Mikel] We walk into the house.

Obviously, the first thing you see
is this classroom on the left-hand side.

Then we see the living room
when you turn to the right-hand side.

And honestly,
there's really not enough room

for either one of those things.

It's a lot to take in.

Plus, we have to remember
that we're expecting another sibling soon.

-Oh, that's right.
-Another child is joining the family.

And we have to hack a space
for that child too,

and all the things that come with kids,
like toys, and clothes, and beds.

It is a lot.

But I think that we can conclude,

since Judah and Jesse
already share a room,

that we need to hack Mae's room
to accommodate the new sibling.

-Yeah.
-There's no other space here.

The problem, though, is that Mae's room
is so tight. It's extremely small.

-But it's got super high ceilings.
-Yeah.

I mean, I'm thinking maybe we even
do some type of bunk bed situation,

because we can easily source that.

[Brooks] Yeah, totally.
Two kids sharing a room, though?

We have to hack a space
to store all their stuff.

Like, if you had a system
that the kids could operate.

How about we store toys
and blinkies and stuffed animals

inside of some kind of basket,

but we use some kind of pulley system?

That way, the lines can be roped around.

We can tie it off
to some kind of cool mechanism.

Zip! That could raise and lower

up and down off the floor,
holds all their stuff.

Books, toys, whatever they need.

It's cool. It makes them
wanna put their stuff back.

-Seems like an important thing.
-Mom will love that.

Okay, so, we still have got to figure out

how we hack this classroom,
living room situation.

So, we've got three kids
that currently need desks.

One child is on the way.

So that's a fourth desk
that we have to add to the equation.

Plus, we still have to get a desk
in this room for Mom as well.

-That's a lot of desks.
-Yes.

Okay, let's think of all the surfaces.

I mean, can we suspend
anything from the ceiling?

[Ati] We have really low ceilings
in that living room,

and I don't know if we have the structure
to be able to support furniture like that.

What if we had a desk
that folded down from the wall?

And then back up. No legs.

I like that. That's a smart plan.

[Jessica]
But that still contains us to the one wall

that all the desks are up against now

because we have a piano, a window, a door.

[Brooks] Not enough wall space.

So, we really need to think about maybe
possibly other spaces in the house.

Like, Dad did say they have
a basement space of some sort.

No, no, no. He called that a dungeon.

-I heard him.
-He did.

But we need to explore
this dungeon, really.

Like, it might be the only space
that we have available.

No, this sounds like the beginning
of every single horror movie.

-You know what happens in horror movies.
-What happens?

Uh, the Black man dies first,
and I am not dying.

-[all laugh]
-The blonde girl goes next!

No, you're just gonna trip and fall.

[Brooks] Send in the white chick.

You're gonna live.

[Mikel] Well, where is this entrance?

We need to check out this basement,
but we don't know where it is.

So, we're gonna have to do
some snooping around.

Oh, there's a door over there.

Let's check that one out.

Is it open?

Okay, yup. This is it.

[Jessica]
Oh, wow! There is a lot of stuff in here.

[Ati] This is a pretty short ceiling.

-It's really dark in here too.
-[Mikel] Yeah, it feels like a dungeon.

-It's a lot going on down here.
-[Jessica] Yeah.

This place has about six-foot ceilings.
We can't really raise the ceilings.

But I think what we can do

is we can underpin this basement
and dig in about two feet.

We have about six-foot ceilings right now.

If we do at least two feet,
it gives us a good amount of clearance.

-[Jessica] Lower the floor?
-[Ati] Yes, it's doable.

The other thing we have to think about is
there's no direct access from the house.

We had to come outside
and go around the house.

So, how do we get directly
from inside the house to here?

Right now, we're right
underneath the kitchen.

Let's go up to the kitchen

and let's see how we can
get access to this basement.

-[Mikel] Let's get out of here.
-All right, cool.

[Brooks] So, you're telling me
that we can dig out the basement.

The big question is
that we have to figure out a way

to access it directly from here,

because the only way to get
there now is from going outside.

Yeah. The basement is directly underneath
where we are right now in the kitchen,

so the way that we could access it

would be either
the hallway or the kitchen,

and, looking around, it probably makes
more sense for us to use the kitchen

because at least it's wide
and there is enough clearance.

And then we just have
to figure out a really cool way,

so that they can get
from up here down there.

So, a pole, or a ladder, or I don't know,
a pneumatic tube...

-Life-size.
-Yes!

-A pneumatic tube?
-Yup!

[imitates whooshing]

We're not gonna be able to figure that out

until we are actually
done clearing the basement.

-So, we should get jackhammering now.
-[Brooks] Mikel, you ready?

-[Mikel] I'm not jackhammering anything.

Yeah, it's 3D printing. I love doing this.

Oh my God. So, what are you working on?

All right, we need to have
a classroom for the kids,

but we also need, in general,

access from within the house
into the basement.

Exactly.

My brain is sort of stuck on the most
compact version of a staircase.

-Which is a spiral staircase.
-Okay.

So, what do you have in mind?
What are you thinking?

-[Jessica] This is the kitchen.
-[Ati] Yeah.

And the corner of the kitchen,
here's the basement.

I think we cut a hole in the kitchen floor
and add a spiral staircase.

But to maximize space,

let's build a custom table
to house the entrance to the staircase.

That way, the family can eat at the table,

but still have direct access
to the classroom.

Wow!

Oh my God, that is so cool.

I'm still thinking through all of these.
I have other random table prototypes here.

[Ati] Okay, this is ridiculously cool.

So the only thing that I could say,

while you're thinking through
all of these ideas,

just remember that we have
a limited footprint in the basement.

-And so, whatever we do with the stairs,

it's better for us to have
a smaller base than a larger base.

and it's going to be
a cool art installation

when they all go up into the ceiling.

the toys, they lower it down.

Okay, Brooks, I'm really loving this idea.

But what safety measures
can we put in place,

so that the kids don't accidentally
have baskets dropping on their heads?

Oh, totally. I was thinking
of this kind of crank system.

So if we put in a crank
that can go both directions,

-then there's no loose cables.
-Okay.

And then the children
can raise and lower the basket.

-I love it.

[Mikel] A lot has changed
since the last time I was down here.

[Ati] I know, right?

So, this will be the new classroom.

This is the new classroom.
We actually dug in about four feet.

-Okay.
-So that way, we're gonna have

an extra two feet
of vertical space once this is done.

-Nice.
-Yeah.

And then over there at the corner,

that's where we're gonna build
a spiral staircase

that's gonna open up into the kitchen.

And then over here,

we're gonna actually have a window
to get some natural light in here.

And we're gonna replace the exterior door.

Then we can source desks
and storage for the classroom.

What is this frame that you guys
are building on the outside here?

When we started digging
into this basement,

we realized
the house doesn't have any footings.

-Okay.
-So, we needed to add in some footings,

otherwise the structure
would be compromised.

The only thing is, in order to do that,

we're losing about six inches
all around the space.

We started with about 170 square feet.

We're gonna end up
with about 150 square feet.

We're really gonna have to come up
with some creative hacks.

So, like, I think we need to source
some transformable desks and chairs,

so that it doesn't take away
from the footage we have on the floor.

Once the concrete is laid,
we'll have a much better idea

as to how much space we have to hack.

Okay. I have all the faith in you.

-Yeah.
-But in the meantime,

I'm gonna pray to the concrete gods
and ask them to help you out

-because you got a lot of work, sister.
-[laughs]

So, a quick little update.

We had a little hiccup with the basement
that ate up a little bit of space.

-Okay.
-So, we're trying to get really creative

because we've lost a little space
that we didn't anticipate.

-So, we're gonna source the kids' desks.
-Okay.

But we need to come up with some type
of creative hack for Mom's desk.

It needs to be a custom-built piece
to fit what we are getting.

-Because now that we're in a smaller room.
-Okay. Yes.

Okay, so, here's what I'm thinking
for Mom's desk.

Maybe it's some type of situation
where the desk kind of, like, folds out

and collapses back up against the wall
when she's done at the end of the day.

Then we can build some shelves, cubbies,

or cabinets behind and below the desk
where Mom can keep her supplies.

Why don't we make this a chalkboard?

-Shut up!
-Yeah!

Oh my gosh, that is so smart.

Every classroom needs one.

to try to test it.

that lets you have access
to a spiral staircase.

And then we're gonna get a kitchen table,
and when the kids are done with breakfast,

then they'll open the hatch
and escape down to school.

I always wanted to have
a secret passageway

in my house growing up as a kid.
I had nothing like that.

Yeah, but it's my favorite dream ever.

So now that we got the desktop straight,

let's go ahead
and put in the legs for our chalkboard.

So that it can hinge-open like a door.

This gate will basically open
the side of the table,

so that anyone can walk through it.

It's a table hack
into a stairway hack, to a classroom hack.

I just love building stuff
that you guys dream up.

[Mikel] So, we hacked the basement
into a classroom.

Susan, before, you homeschooled
the kids out of the living room.

So, we wanted to make sure

that we could give you a custom space
where you can now have a classroom.

We have room to move around.
It's bright. It's cheery.

-This just blows me away.
-Really cool. I already like it.

Did you guys notice that the ceilings

-[Mikel] Just a little.

We dug in about three feet below.

And you have nine feet
of vertical space in here.

The classroom is so engaging and spacious.

To have my own separate space to be able
to do what I love to do is really a gift.

So, you all are probably wondering
where your desks are.

Well, let me show you.
It's a little bit of magic here.

When you're ready for school,
all you do is you take the desk,

and you open it up here,
and it has a cool little leg.

[Judah] Cool!

We've even given you additional storage
where you can put your pens, your pencils.

All of your supplies can go right in here.

The chair can go back
into the inner portion of the desk.

So, then this opens up the space,
so that you have a lot of walkway.

My desk is so cool. It just appears.

[Mikel] We have four separate desks.

You have the three kids now,
but you have one on the way.

So, each child has their own
allocated desk, their allocated chair,

and their own little craft bin
so they're all taken care of.

[Judah] My mom is such a great teacher.

I'm so glad we have this classroom,
so that she can teach all of us in it.

So, if you're gonna be the teacher,
clearly, the teacher needs a desk, right?

-I think so, yeah.
-[Mikel] So, check it out.

closed-door cabinet storage.

That's amazing.

You can put all of your lesson plans,
you can put all your notebooks.

I love it. I love it.

[Jason] Having this classroom
is gonna make the kids love school.

They love school anyway.
They love their teacher.

But they will love it
even more with this classroom.

When we first thought
about adopting this new child,

we struggled with
where is this new child going to go?

[Susan] Now there is plenty of space.

We didn't just get a renovation.

We got a renovation
that was tailored just for us.
