when I leave the city,

changing to smaller roads.

I love it. Except for ticks.
I'm very afraid of ticks.

That's why I don't do outdoors, honey.

What happens to you
when you see a ladybug?

I look for the nearest vacuum, honey,
so I can suck it up

-and get it out of my apartment.

I'm gonna wish it good luck

I'm super excited to get out

and meet the Buckman family.

You have to be cool
to live in an iconic structure.

Everyone in the neighborhood
knows who we are

because we live in a big house
that looks like an igloo.

Together we're raising
my four granddaughters.

Jade is 19, and she's the oldest.

Coral is 15, and she's our fashionista.

Jewel, she's 11,
and she is so sweet and kind.

Cyan is six years old, and she is sassy.

The house has tons of personality,
but it's not practical living space.

[Jade]
All right, sisters, gather up, gather up.

All four of us,
we share the loft upstairs,

so we don't have
any privacy for ourselves.

Upstairs, we only have one small closet.
So we don't have a lot of storage.

[knocks]

And we also share one bathroom.
So, the space is really tight.

We love our house, and it's so unique,

but we just don't know how to make it
work for everybody in the family.

It's stuck in there. Right there.

I've tried my best
to make all the repairs,

but we can really use some help.

This is a cool house, but it's a blessing
and a curse in the same sentence.

-It's 1,500 square feet.

And we have one bedroom.

The math is not mathing.

How many bathrooms?

There're two bathrooms.

When I bought the house,
it only had one bathroom.

I put that bathroom upstairs.
And I did all this up there myself.

So, where are you all sleeping?

When you go upstairs,
it leads straight to a loft.

And we all have four beds just up there.

So, all four of you live together
like Little House on the Prairie?

Yes.

I was gonna go up there
and stall it out like you do horses.

Stall it out. Giddy up, girls. Giddy up.

I would love to see them
with their own privacy.

And some of my family heirlooms
are actually in the basement

because I don't know
how to lay it all out.

I would love to take a look
at this upstairs sleeping situation.

my two littlest sisters sleep.

How does this all function for you?

Honestly, that's the difficult part.

You know, little girls
need to go to bed earlier.

You know, but it's hard to keep quiet
for them to go to sleep.

Even if I'm whispering,
it sounds like I'm in their ear.

Is it pretty loud?
Yeah. Your sisters are rude.

They're just loud. Who's the rudest one?

Ah! This is crazy!

Now, I love my siblings,
but let me tell you something.

If I had to live upstairs
in the same way these girls did,

one of us would not have made it.

These sisters definitely need
separation and some privacy.

You all have done a really good job
of keeping it tidy and organized.

But where are your clothes?

We have drawers and nightstands and stuff
that we organize our clothes in.

[Mikel]
So, everything goes in these dressers

-and these bins in the front?
-[Jade] Yes.

And then, me and Coral
split the closet that is over there.

And the two little girls,
they have to put their clothes downstairs.

[Ati] Wait. This is the bathroom?

[laid-back music playing]

-Girls. I've got questions for you.
-[Jade] Yes?

-[Ati] Come here.

How do four girls share this bathroom?

[Jade] It's a struggle. It really is.

Honestly, one person at a time
has to be in here.

Who gets to go
if you're all wanting to come in?

How do you determine who goes first?

Whoever gets there first.

-Oh, it's like a race?
-[Jade] It's a race.

Me and Cyan
go downstairs to brush our teeth.

As a Black girl,
I have a ton of hair products.

How are you sharing this vanity?

Actually, you know,
we all have our individual caddies.

We have our baskets
that we put all of our products in,

like toothpaste, toothbrushes, hair stuff.

Like a dorm room
where you're taking in and out your stuff?

-'Cause there's nothing in here.
-Yes, that's exactly what we do.

Wow.

What is this space in here?

This is a place where I do prayers.

-I used to use it for my recording studio.
-[Ati] Okay.

What's in here?

[Emma] That was my soundproof booth.

[Ati] Wow.

And actually now
it's being used for the girls.

So, what would you like
this space to be used for?

We've had the girls now
for roughly ten years.

We've done the best that we could,
but they don't have their own space.

-[Ati] Mm-hmm.
-And I haven't...

-I haven't been able to give that to them.
-[Ati] Mm-hmm.

And if me giving this room up
for them to be able to have that,

then I'm so willing to do it.

[Ati] Mm-hmm.

[Emma] So willing.

I've worked on this house so many years,

but there's only so much
that I can do right now.

-You've done a great job with it.
-[Emma] Oh thank you.

And I hope we can be able to really
create a space for your girls to grow.

-Right.
-And I think we can do that.

You guys are so wonderful.

Emma and Paul have done
an amazing job raising these girls,

but they're struggling with space
because of the unique shape of this house.

I dream of round houses, but I don't think
any of us have worked on a round house.

This igloo is gonna be
really tricky for us to figure out.

This house definitely is cool,
but there's a real problem.

I see why the family
has a love-hate relationship with it.

I think the biggest issue
that they have upstairs

is nobody can have
any type of personal space at all.

So, let's talk about
how we turn this one loft space

into four separate bedrooms,
because all the girls need privacy.

Paul was like, "Let's do horse stalls."

[Jessica] Yeah. What?

So, do we actually have
enough room to put four beds side by side?

I don't think we do.

You have the height of the dome, right?
So you could go really high.

You could stack two beds.

Maybe we could try it this way.

Not bunk beds, but, like, pods almost.

Where it's like a pod on the top,
a pod on the bottom.

-Where each girl has their separate space.
-[Jessica] Totally.

Also, it might allow us to give them all
their own kind of entertainment system.

-Right?
-I like that.

So, where are we thinking
that we get this done?

Grandma Emma is willing
to part ways with her prayer closet.

Here's where Grandma Emma's
prayer room is.

And so, if we take down these walls,

so now we have one big
half-circle space over there.

I think putting the pods in each end

is going to eat up
the least amount of space.

We have to think about the fact
that we still have a dome ceiling.

It's not a flat ceiling.

In thinking through
the construction of this,

my preference is
we don't touch the actual structure.

All right. So, if we've already taken
Grandma's prayer closet,

which me and Jesus
both don't feel good about,

we've got to figure out something else
to do with this space. That's a bold move.

I think we can create a different
prayer space for her in the house.

But that gives us
a really large footprint to work with.

If the pods are off-center, then we could
put something else in the middle.

[Jessica] We got rid of that closet area.

-[Ati] Yes.
-[Jessica] So, maybe it's a closet module.

-[Ati] So put the closet in the middle.
-[Jessica] Yes.

[Ati] What if we use
the back of that closet space over here

and build the bathroom there?

So, for the closet, I was thinking
a bunch of really cool mechanisms.

So, imagine that we have this closet,
and it has these rotating sides, right?

So everyone has their own section.
It happens on both sides of this closet.

I like that.

But we still have
the challenge of the bathroom.

There's four girls. We got to do
four showers and four toilets.

[Ati] I think that will take
too much of a footprint.

[Mikel] That's a lot.

So, are we doing one sink,
or four sinks, or two sinks?

I think we just get into the space first,
and then see what that looks like,

because running plumbing lines
for four sinks

-might be a little bit of a beast.
-Yeah.

I'd love to come up
with some kind of crazy, cool vanity.

Not just for one person
or two people, but for all four girls.

So, I was thinking
some kind of modular blocking system

that we could componentize,

where the bottom part
of the vanity could pull out

and become the chair for them to sit on

while they're getting ready,
doing hair and makeup.

And that's also the storage
where they put all their products.

So they could ditch the caddy
and put all their hair products.

You know, I use tons of hair products.

-What hair products do you use?
-How many do you use?

-Oh!
-[Ati] Oh!

-I have to say, very well done.

We need to start
with a clean slate for all our hacks.

So first, we've got to clear out the loft,
then demo the bathroom and the closet.

Oh, Brooks, look,
I pulled something off the wall!

I guess we can't salvage the toilet, huh?

[Jessica] Hey, Mikel, can you stop swiping

So, I think you might have
more experience than I do

organizing a closet.

Hmm. I think you're right.

So, what I wanna do here
is create a really streamlined closet

for the Buckman girls to maximize storage
and maximize accessibility.

We can build two rotating towers
that will flank each side of the closet.

Each tower will have
shelves that will spin,

so the girls can grab whatever they want.

And then in the middle,
we can install drawers and racks

for all of their clothes and accessories.

Each girl will kind of have
their own designated area in that system.

It's four girls,
so they're gonna have a lot of shoes, so...

I actually was just thinking of that, and...

Okay. So, imagine that we have
a bunch of tubes sticking out of the wall.

And then,
if you wanted to store your shoes...

Oh!

Amazing.

And you're gonna take advantage
of the vertical space on the wall. Smart.

-I love it.

the bathroom in the middle of the loft.

that's gonna span the entire wall.

Now they can get ready at the same time.
That's perfect.

So, over here, this entire wall
is going to be the closet.

[Mikel] Girl, this is really starting
to feel like a luxury spa.

I am so in love with it.

[Ati] Yeah.

Okay. Let's talk about these pods,
since we framed up the wall.

Let's not go any higher
than what you have right now.

I don't want to mess
with the integrity of this circular dome.

-I want to hack four luxury pods.
-Mm.

[Mikel] Okay. So, against this wall,
we'll have an upper and a lower pod.

We'll do two pods
on this side of the bathroom...

-Yeah.
-...two pods on the other side.

Each girl will have
her own bed and nightstand.

And I'm thinking we should build
a curved desk up against the wall

for them to do their homework.

We can definitely build that.

We have to make
a few adjustments for the measurements,

because we're accounting for the dome.

Like, if you see over here,

the seams aren't lining up
against these curved walls.

We are literally hacking four square pegs
into a big round hole, but you've got it.

-I got it.
-I know you got it.

Okay, so we are building
one giant vanity for all four girls.

Okay. What do you want to make it out of?

What colors? How big?

[Brooks] So, imagine one huge vanity
that's about 12 feet long.

We can divide it into four sections

and build plenty of drawers
and cubbies for each girl.

And then, we can install
two sinks and add four mirrors

that can rotate
to reveal even more storage.

[Freddie] Okay, so, this is gonna be cool.
What did you wanna do for chairs?

Are we gonna buy some and put them where?

There's not much space
between the vanity and the shower stalls.

But what if
one of the drawers is the chair?

So, when they pull out a faux drawer,
it's the chair that comes out.

All right. I'm with you.

So, I'm gonna get some material,
and we can get started.

Great. Okay. Put me to work.

that we can have flanking
both sides of the closet.

And then maybe on these bigger shelves,

we do sort of fins
that could go around the shelves like this

to contain the tornado
of the sweaters and the...

And that's great because if you spin it
at high speed, guess what's gonna happen?

-They're gonna fly off.
-Everything's gonna go crazy elsewhere.

Yeah, exactly.

How many more of these
do we need to make?

I don't want these girls fighting.

They've been fighting long enough.
They need their own stuff.

is one of the coolest
I've seen in a long time.

When Paul and I
first brought the girls home,

we wanted to give them
the best life possible.

And we did our best.

It was hard,
but the team just really heard us,

and God has answered that prayer.
