TO LOVE, TO LOSE

SCREENWRITING IN PILL FORM
WITH AFIFE JALE: THE CONFLICT

SCRIPT - CHARACTER - PLOT

Afife Jale here. Welcome to my course

on Screenwriting
and Storytelling in Pill Form.

Are you ready to swallow today's pill?

Today, we're looking into conflict.
Every story needs conflict.

But it's not as easy as it seems.

You know, conflict isn't just
about characters facing off.

It's actually used to liven the story,

avoid monotony,
and spark a change in the couf

a change in the course of events.

Conflict makes the viewer wanna know more.

If they're curious,
they wanna keep watching.

Turns out,
conflict is what fuels dialectics

and, more importantly, it fuels life.

THE CONFLICT

In all of my career,
I've never had a debt I couldn't collect.

One way or another.

So I recommend you figure something out.

You're paying your mother's debt
with interest.

Honey, it's not what you think.

Well, I mean, I didn't know
what I was agreeing to. Uh…

I… I even told myself…

Well, I wasn't talking to myself.

Baturay had told me about this thing,
so I thought, "Why not?"

He talked you into this? Why would
Baturay get involved with your debt?

- Who's that?
- They're together.

Hang on. Baturay shouldn't have
anything to do with this.

Why not? Come on, sweetheart.
We always sit and talk about our problems.

We talked about this problem.
This was his solution.

It was his solution?
Baturay doesn't have anything figured out.

- He's totally lost!
- What's going on?

Baturay found a solution for my mom.
That's all I know.

A solution for what?

He didn't say I had to do it.
By solution, I mean…

- Afife?
- Yeah.

Afife Jale, right?

Do we know each other?

2017 - KARTAL PRISON

To wrap things up, I'll leave you with
a famous screenwriting theorist's opinion.

Although, I don't fully agree
with him or it,

he posits that the most fundamental
attraction in life is falling in love.

Of course, what he's saying

is that the audience
is always interested in love.

- Love, it's great!
- Mm! Right.

Love stories are the most powerful.

When there's love,
in terms of dramatic structure…

Remember, the thing I kept talking about?
The dramatic structure, blah blah blah?

Well, according to that structure,

no plot line should
take precedence over love.

If you build your story on love,

and if you can turn it
into an impossible love, you're set.

- You know what I mean?
- Awesome. Yes.

- I'll expand on this in our next classes.
- Thanks.

Thank you so much.

Hey, uh, could we all take a group photo?
Is that all right?

Of course, ma'am. You can stand there.
We'll gather the group.

- Okay.
- All right, inmates.

Gather around your teacher.

Don't get too close.

No pushing.

All right, guys, gather up.

Ready?

- Yes. Stand still.
- Just a sec, don't move.

The screenwriter, am I right?

- That's right, I am.
- She is. So am I.

You know what? You taught
a screenwriting class I once took.

- Where?
- It was years ago. At Kartal.

- The prison.
- You were a political prisoner?

It was more of a classical offense.

Some would call it petty crime,
but I'm not fond of that term.

The screenwriters' association asked you
to teach that course. I remember.

Oh, wow. Professor Afife!
We always looked forward to your classes.

We read all the books you suggested.
We took notes.

We learned so much in that class.
Structure, character.

Actually, other teachers came after you,
but they weren't as good.

- We all lost interest.
- Wow.

- Small world, huh?
- So small.

Honestly, I hope you all get out
of this situation as soon as possible.

I'm sure we'll be able to figure it out.

Yeah, I feel like
I'm not getting through to you.

We don't have to figure anything out.
We don't owe you.

Maybe I haven't made myself clear.

How about I try explaining it to
you like this? Let me show you.

Do you know what this is?

PROMISSORY NOTE

- Paper.
- Yeah. And what's on it?

A signature.

It's my mother's signature.

This is a form of guarantee.

That way, if you were to refuse
to pay your debt for some reason,

it would confirm our agreement.

This signature is for our protection.

We fill this blank space out
with the amount owed.

When it's due, we collect.
Everything's clear, no surprises.

- Oh, really?
- Really.

No signature now. You can't force us!

You really think I'm dumb enough
to take the original agreement with me?

That was a copy.

The real agreement's in our safe.

My goal was
to explain the situation politely.

But… it looks like you're not hearing me.

I'll give you a little while
to process this,

then we'll need to move forward
with the payment.

Otherwise, none of us
will like what'll happen.

Please know
I have great respect for you, Professor.

I'm Kemal Yanıklar.

Here's my card.

We'll be in touch.

I finished work early.
I came to help you guys out.

Yasin, we didn't get a chance
to talk about the construction.

When will we get to see it again?

All right. When you get back, sure.

How about we meet there?

I'll head out when you call me.
Sound good?

Great. Bye.

- Hey, I'm here.
- Mehmet. Bring us some tea.

Good to see you, Pop.
The diamonds arrived from India.

- They're in the safe.
- Nicely done.

- Neslihan.
- Hi, Uncle. Kemal's on his way too.

- Destan?
- He'll be here any minute.

Great. I just talked to Yasin
about the construction.

I know. We spoke.

- He's in Ankara now for that company.
- Yeah, I heard.

He said he'd get the permits at the price
we agreed. It's gonna work, no problem.

- Oh, that's good news, real good.
- Excuse me.

We finally collected that money, huh?

Great, thanks.

I thought about it last night.

That man wanted to blow his brains out
in front of my entire family.

Why? Because I wanted my money.

What a mess with the police
and all the other lunatics.

I mean… For God's sake.

Know what? I don't wanna
have to deal with this stuff anymore.

Neslihan. Don't let up with Yasin.

If we manage to get that land
at that price, everything'll change.

We'll be set, Neslihan.

Don't worry. We're on it.

He said we can raze the whole neighborhood
and build whatever we want.

Yasin's often ahead of the game.

What a weasel.
It's like he can smell profit.

We're gonna build a whole city out there.

Or just about.

All right, show me the numbers now.

Keep in mind these numbers aren't final,
but I put in a lot of work.

- It'll give me the big picture.
- Sure it will. Here, take a look.

- Morning, everyone.
- Morning.

Uncle, I've written down
everything we've spent so far.

Thank God it's payday.

It's a bit more than what we usually get.

Pretty sure he's saving the rest
for a fancy tombstone. What's going on?

Getting rid of our shy operation to build
shopping centers and residential towers.

But loan sharking's hanging onto us.

- It's always the same old story.
- He means it this time.

Neslihan's on board too, you know.

Yo, heads or tails?

Quit it. He's gonna notice.

Right here.

Did you get a chance
to talk about the car?

I don't give a sh*t!
Ask him yourself. You're a grown man.

- The hell you babbling about?
- What do you mean, Pop?

What is it? You've been yapping
since you got here. Mehmet, that's enough.

Enough with the coming and going.

You're engaging in serious business,
Father. You don't need us for that.

Are you making fun of us?

No, of course I'm not.

- Not satisfied with that amount?
- It's great.

Show some guts for once. Just once.

Say, "I'm not happy."

Say, "It's not enough."

Say, "I want more."

"You're not giving me enough."
Just say it.

- You think it would change anything?
- No.

I'm just gonna have to keep reminding
all you numbnuts over and over.

All the money we make is yours.

You need to learn to wait.

This brilliant girl and I
are working our asses off

to put our money to good use.

Right, but what does that
have to do with anything?

Good morning.

Good, to see you, Kemal.

Uncle, your face is all red.
Are these wise guys upsetting you again?

Always the same story!

You give money to people, they take it.
Lend it, take it. Give it, take it.

But you have to chase 'em.
It just never ends.

On top of that, they look down on us,
calling us loan sharks, robbers.

Our business isn't thriving.
We're not evolving.

This will build our reputation.
We're working to build our honor.

We're racking our brains to move up.
This woman and this man are--

- It's just what I was saying--
- No, you weren't.

You were saying,
"Pops is gonna get buried with his money."

I don't give up, my boy.

I'll keep telling you that
again and again.

Because in this world,
those who show off never truly make it.

If you drive a Ferrari,

one day they'll come to get you.

The cops will come down on you,
and the crooks will come down on you.

You think Kemal couldn't get
a nice SUV if he wanted?

Why is he driving that old car?

How old is your car, Kemal?

- Mm… It's 1991, Pop.
- There you have it.

If you don't like how I run
this operation, the door's there.

- I never said that..
- Don't interrupt!

Until we leave this line of work…

…until we start earning our money legally,

I don't care if we build a mall or a city,

this is how it's going to be.

Once we're legit,
I'm gonna give you guys your shares,

and you do whatever the hell you want.

Get a freakin' jet if you want to.

When I die,

I swear to God
you'll wreck this family in days.

Not the two of you.

You guys are gonna.

May we come in?

Where the hell have you two been?!

Didn't we say there was a meeting?
Why weren't you here on time?

The Yanıklars really are
a bunch of slackers.

You losers won't amount to anything.

Sorry, Uncle. Please don't say that.
There was traffic.

All right, guys.
Have a tea or coffee out there.

Here's your cash. We're busy here.

- This the stock certificate, Baturay?
- Sort of.

It's actually a receipt
for our stock certificate.

Let me see if I understand.

- You invested in stocks with my mom.
- Mm-hmm.

And you decided to borrow money
from a loan shark to invest in them.

Yeah.

How stupid are you?! Are you nuts?!

Babe, uh, I know how it sounds,
but this was an incredible opportunity.

A company in Korea is involved.
They're gonna buy them out really soon.

The second the sale is announced,
the stock's value will skyrocket.

- Tenfold, maybe even 20.
- What the hell is he saying?

Quit twirling your hair. Driving me crazy.

Sweetheart,
the shares are only gonna go up.

We'll earn ten times what your mother
owes these guys. We'll pay them back!

And not just what she owes the loan shark,
all of her debts!

- The plan's golden!
- You really believe that?

'Cause if you did,
why get a loan from a crook?

And why would you drag
my mother into this?

And why would you do such a stupid thing
without saying a word?

Why would I? Hmm?

We have money? No.

I'm thinking us rich.

This is a great opportunity.

It was the only way for us
to get money to invest.

When did the Mafia ever become an option?

No, no. They're not the Mafia.
They just lend, uh, money.

So you're the one who found these lenders?

I didn't want him to bother you with this.
You were busy writing.

- We planned it together.
- So you all knew about this?

Why not tell Fidan while you're at it!
Why not let her in on it, huh?

Give it a couple days.

The sale will go through,

it'll make the news,
and the stock will skyrocket.

We'll pay off everything we owe.
Ali's Berlin thing'll work out too.

- Berlin?
- Berlin, yeah, in Germany, you know?

What's going on there?

You don't remember what I said?
Kerem, a friend of mine, a sound engineer.

He wants to go find a job there,
and he said I could go with him.

Wow, she doesn't remember at all.

Berlin's out of the question.
Forget it! No one's going anywhere.

- Get to work in the kitchen!
- I'm sorry, but I will be going.

- That's not possible!
- It is! We're getting the money soon.

That guy also said something
about the interest on how much we owe.

No clue what he meant.
He showed me a contract.

He said he had the real one in his safe.

In just two days, everything will be fine!

You two are like
the blind leading the blind.

I don't trust you one bit.

I think I'm better off
talking this over with a lawyer.

Macit knows someone, I think.

I don't think it's worth the bother.

Go ahead if you feel the need.

It's just not the kind of thing
we can solve legally.

We can't get out of it.

She signed the paper. It's a contract.
Everyone knows you can't back out.

- So now what?
- Let's say we can't pay our debt back.

That won't happen, obviously.

If it does, they're gonna use the value
of the house or restaurant as collateral.

Your mom provided one of the values
for the agreement.

It says: "I, Perihan Kazan, owe so-and-so
this many millions, blah blah blah."

I'm telling you, it won't come to that!
All I needed was two more days!

- They stormed in and ruined the surprise!
- Shut up, Baturay! Sh!

Every word you say only makes it worse!
I feel like I can't breathe!

If we don't pay up, we lose
the restaurant, the house, everything!

From now on, I'm in charge here.

You wanna go to the bathroom,
you ask me first! No more secrets!

- Sure.
- Sure.

Sure.

I'm leaving.

You take care of that thing?

- Don't even ask.
- Why, what's up?

There's this woman who owns a diner.
She lives right above it.

- Yeah, Uncle mentioned her case.
- Classic situation.

You know, the mother takes out a loan
behind her daughter's back.

Went to collect interest,
and sh*t hit the fan.

Her daughter's nuts. She's not complying.
You'll have to handle her.

Why me though?

I couldn't get through to her.
I know you can.

You're good with that stuff.

Don't laugh.
If it was a guy, I'd know what to do.

- Tomorrow?
- Sure.

All right. How about
we go together? You fill me in.

Mr. Husband-to-be.

Hold it higher, Kadir.

Hang on. I'm pulling the hose, just a sec.

- Hang on. It's tangled.
- Is this better?

That's a cool picture. Who's it of?

Her name's Stella Adler.
She's my mom's hero.

- A stage actress?
- An absolute legend.

Mom took classes with her in New York.
She tells everyone. She didn't tell you?

- No.
- Trust me, she will.

- Could you guys please fold this for me?
- Of course.

By the way, help yourself
to any clothes of mine you need.

- Don't be shy.
- Thanks. That's so sweet.

- Tell me…
- Mm?

- Is it all that bad?
- We're in trouble.

If we can't pay them,
they're gonna take everything we've got.

- That's what I've understood.
- So what now?

I don't know.

Were you really
that guy's teacher in prison?

Could be. I don't remember.

How could you forget a man like that?

I know, right? He's cute.

But seriously, I don't remember.

“Other teachers came after you,
but they weren't as good as you."

"We lost interest,” he said.

- All right, smart-a*s!
- Afife! He was checking you out!

- I swear he did! Right, Fidan?
- You're gonna pay for all this!

- You're strangling me!
- And, Mom!

Don't be getting lazy
about your skincare routine!

- Let go! Stop!
- I'm not done with you!

- Get back here!
- Ha ha!

A HOT DAY

My sweet…

My dear husband…

I made an awful mistake.
I don't know what we're gonna do.

If you were still here, you'd say,
"We'll figure it out, my queen."

I don't know
if you'd have gotten us out of this one.

But you would have loved me through it.

I feel like such a loser.

The cook just laughed
when I told him it was monthly.

He thought it was weekly.

The guy's great, but we can't afford him.

That faucet's dripping again, Ma?

For God's sake, Baturay!
He said he fixed it.

Listen, I can only do so much.

All you do is complain about my work.

And you swore to me
you wouldn't need me for long.

Well, that was
before you ruined our lives.

You're the cook here. That's it.

- Honey! Oh, my angel! Oh, sweetheart! Oh!
- My hand!

- Great! I was wondering where you were.
- Hello, Professor.

We didn't finish our talk yesterday.
Neslihan is here to go over the details.

Neslihan, what is it you do?

She's our CFO.
She's in charge of our finances.

I see. I can't think
of what there is to explain.

There's tons of stuff.
We've only just scratched the surface.

I understand that the party
who took out the loan is your mother,

but you're not convinced
she's indebted to us. Is that right?

That's right. Please explain it to me.

How about we sit over there?

Mm-hmm. Please have a seat.

Hey, Sis.

- Should we wait for your mother?
- No. She's working.

- Mm.
- And she wouldn't understand.

If she did, you wouldn't be here.

We run a restaurant.

We have things to prepare
to get ready for the lunchtime service.

Why don't we agree on a payment plan?

As you know,
since you couldn't pay the capital,

interest will compound.

- Wait, I don't get it.
- I'll go over it again.

Until you return the amount borrowed,
interest will accrue.

- Well, I wasn't aware of the loan.
- Mm-hmm.

That's a you problem.
Let me explain how the interest works.

Let's say you made a hundred lira.
You get it?

But 60% is for us.

What? How?

I did my research.

A restaurant like this can bring in over

Out of that, 60% will be ours.
You'll get to pay interest that way.

- But how are we gonna survive?
- You'll keep 40% to run the place.

- How kind!
- But you have to.

The interest will accrue if you don't.
And if it does, it'll crush you.

What's the payment method?

We'll come. Every day, we'll hang around
and collect it at the end of the day.

- Then we'll leave.
- Daily? Why though?

To avoid complications.

So that we don't steal
the money we work so hard for?

If you put it that way, I guess so. Yes.

You'll be collecting?

Not necessarily. We have other colleagues.

Could be Mr. Şahin,
Mr. Kartal, Kartal, Mr. Destan.

Could be me, if necessary.

- Of course, Mr. Kemal may as well.
- You're gonna send a collector every day.

Look, Professor,
we don't wanna cause any trouble.

Our job is just to collect what is owed
and leave as soon as possible.

- What are they saying, Afife?
- I'll talk to you later.

Is that your mother? Hi, Mrs. Perihan.

We'll need the capital too.
We won't get into that for now.

- Don't worry. You'll get all of it back.
- Enough!

We're expecting a return
on our stocks in two days.

When I got the loan, there was
this nice young man with green eyes.

I told him everything.

Enough!

May we end the finance lesson now?

If the math is clear to you,
we're good to go.

My understanding is this guy's here
to put pressure on us

and beat us up
if the math isn't clear to us.

No, Professor. I wouldn't do such a thing.

Trust me, we don't wanna cause a ruckus,
I assure you.

Here's my card.
Reach out if you have concerns.

Before we head out,
I like to know this about people.

You're an Aries, is that right?

- That's right.
- Ah!

So what happens now?

I thought we'd go bankrupt slowly,
but turns out it'll be quick.

Ma? What are Aries like? Any idea?

You're a typical Aries.

Screenwriting classes?
Really? That's hard to believe.

I took it 'cause I was really bored.

- When was this?
- The last time I was inside.

- 2017, I think.
- Ah.

Crook turned screenwriter, huh?
You sure know how to surprise me.

I was wondering
why you were calling her "Professor."

Well, she really was an excellent teacher.

I was sure she was an Aries.

Yeah, well I don't know
anything about that stuff.

- But she is a bit of a nut.
- She's not normal. Not normal at all.

Did you see how she was struggling
with the Band-Aid?

She was struggling. She was sweating.
She's all nerves.

Ugh, it's the worst trait of the Aries.

I swear, she would fight her own shadow.
She really would. What a mess.

I tried to put it out there earlier.
Don't know if you picked up on it.

Hmm?

- I think you should go for now.
- If you want.

- If something comes up, I'll go.
- Yeah, sure.

Once things are on track,
we can send the guys to handle it.

Sounds good. We're dealing with idiots.
We need to keep an eye on them.

Yeah, what's up?

How about tomorrow?

All right. Yeah, I'm on my way.

- What is it?
- They can't even look after one old man.

- I've gotta go to the nursing home.
- I thought you had just gone.

Trouble, always trouble.

Mr. Kemal, I don't know
what to do anymore. I've lost count.

As you know, this is recurring.

And he's not the only one who gets hurt.
We've gotten complaints.

He doesn't take his meds.

We try to make him, but he attacks us.

I was just told he's leaving the residence
at night without permission.

What's worse is
he's soiled when he returns.

Always covered in dirt.

We wash him, but it's not enough.

You have cooperated with us, Mr. Kemal.

But I'm gonna have to ask you
to move Mr. Muharrem out.

And as soon as possible.

Find a residence closer to your house.

Please, try to understand.

Hey there.
It's time to go and get some sun.

- It's beautiful…
- Come on, Mr. Ahmet.

- I'd rather sit and rest.
- Come on.

Come on, let's go.
It's time to go out. It's lovely.

It's time to enjoy the sunshine.

Dear residents.

It's time to enjoy some sunshine.
We invite you to go out to the garden.

We didn't walk much today.
It's so nice out. What are we waiting for?

After that, we'll serve you a nice meal.

In that case,
I'd like to eat in the garden.

Are you Kemal, dear?

Why yes I am.

I've seen you here before.
You come for visits.

- Aren't you Muharrem's son?
- I am.

Would you mind sitting down?
My legs are weak. I tire easily.

Your father shouts a lot.

Especially at night.

It's fine though. We're used to it.

The others are far worse.

You see, he's actually quite gentle.
He's polite.

Mm.

My grandson likes to treat me.

He bought me a phone with a camera.

He said it would help us to stay in touch.

But I like to use it to take pictures
of flowers and bugs and stuff.

Keeps me busy like a child.

I couldn't sleep last night.

I walk around here when that happens.

I have something I caught on here
I need to show you.

What is wrong with this guy?

If you shout out that woman's name again,

I'll put your head in the toilet
and drown you for real. Hear me?

You better not come back reeking again!
Got it, prick?

We're getting in trouble because of you.

You worked in construction, as*h*le?

- Not the face! Careful.
- Huh?!

You pain in the a*s!

Ah! Ah!

Sit down and don't get up! Ah!

God damn you straight to hell.

Stay still! Don't move, freak.

I figured this is something
you'd want to know.

You should try to get some sun now.
It's nice out.

Stop, please!

Come on, man! Enough. Enough, please!

Trust me, it's a long story, Neslihan.
I had to bring him back here.

You shouldn't have bothered.

No. Why did you leave without telling me?

Go sit. Go ahead.

I don't know, okay?

Just get us something to eat.

Yeah, great. Soup's fine. Thanks.

Ah…

Are you in pain?

Sit back, okay?

Let me take a look.

Those scumbags.

Neslihan, call the director
of the nursing home.

No, not concerning the discharge papers.

I'll let you handle payments and all that.

Tell them Mr. Kemal
had to leave quite suddenly.

He apologizes for leaving the mess.

Also say that if a certain two orderlies
hang on to their jobs, he'll be returning.

He'll get it.
If he doesn't, I'll gladly explain it.

All right.

Turn around.

Mr. Muharrem.

I bet you're wondering
what it is you're doing here

and what'll happen to you now.

Yet another nursing home
that wants nothing to do with you.

They say you shout a lot.

You keep screaming for Gönül.
Always Gönül.

They say you've also
been leaving the residence at night

and coming back covered in dirt.

They're tired of having to clean you up.

I was told you needed
to move out of there.

While they were telling me the horrible
things you do, I had one question.

Why would anyone…

keep mumbling…

…the same name for 40 years.

A wretched woman
who left her family for another man?

You're

such a shameless,
miserable, poor excuse for a man.

Know what?
I'm ashamed of you. You're a disgrace.

Your entire family's ashamed of you.

You are totally worthless to all of us,
you old fool.

I don't care what you think.

But shame on you
for speaking ill of the dead.

- Watch it, will you?
- Sorry.

You put in the right yogurt, right?
The one with garlic.

- I used whatever's in front of me.
- Where'd you put the rice?

- I gave it to you.
- I didn't get it.

Don't just stand there
doing nothing. Move!

Afife!

- Huh?
- I got an idea for the show.

Defne, God! You really think
I have time for that right now?

Nice, you can say that when the guys
at the network reach out.

Great! Sir, did we get you your rice yet?

- I think I'll have some more.
- Yes, I thought so. Here, enjoy.

- Your dumplings…
- You remembered the garlic, right?

- God willing.
- Hmm.

Hmm. Kemal? Can you take this for me?

Uncle Muharrem.

Welcome.

Oh my God. He's so thin.

Hmm?

Uncle Muharrem, what's going on?
You look like you're exhausted.

- He's not breathing well. What do we do?
- Give it a rest. I'm tired.

You gotta call Mr. Halil, the doctor.
You need to get him over here.

No, go out and get him.
Right now. It's urgent.

- Tomorrow.
- Tomorrow, Kemal? You serious?

Do you not see what state he's in?
He reeks too. Are you nuts?

Go get him right away.

- I'll feed him while you're out.
- You're ruining things here too, see?

Kemal, don't say that.

Mm.

Come on, I know that look, Macit.
This is how it has to be for a while.

I didn't say anything.

CREDIT CARDS TEMPORARILY NOT ACCEPTED

- Since when?
- Today.

Afife, authoritarian regimes
aren't as demanding.

Just for a little bit.
We just need a little more cash.

Mind leaving me a big tip?

More, more.

You know, the least you could do
is heat the soup.

Mm-mm-mm! Yogurt soup.
If I'm not mistaken, you love it.

Hmm?

Give it a taste.

Just a little taste.

Go on, open your mouth. Come on.

Could you please tell me
why you're doing this to yourself?

I know you're having a hard time,
but you're hurting your son.

I know he looks angry with you,
but I know him.

He's hurt.

In the end, he's the one
you're punishing, not yourself.

What is it?

He went to prison for you.

It messed up his life.

I don't know why you're doing this.

I guess you hate me for all this.

Don't you?

Kemal does.

Hate's an understatement.

You're right to.

But look, dear.

It's true I've put you all
through a lot, but…

maybe…

maybe some of these things
happened because…

because…

because other things happened before.

Maybe what you see now

is not at all what it appears to be.

Okay, good to go!

- I need to go pick it up.
- That's it, keep it moving!

What do ya think? We could look into
that story I wrote about the shrink.

Oh, no.
Everyone's sick of that kinda stuff.

I've been playing around
with another idea, actually.

It's not very clear yet.
Do you wanna hear about it?

sh*t. We were supposed to talk
to Professor Latife

about the violence
against women protest. We forgot.

- Where is that coming from?
- It just came back to me.

This is so embarrassing.
I promised her we'd write the statements.

We can still do it. So wanna hear my idea?

I'm way too tired, Defne.
I'm also kinda wasted.

Yeah, all right. Fine.
We'll leave it for tomorrow.

I've got a question for you.
Is being an Aries bad or something?

Uh… uh…

He really should be in the ER,
Kemal. He's in really bad shape.

Cuts and bruises heal eventually,
but this is worse.

His breathing is really bad.

I gave him his meds
to knock him out for the night.

Bring him in first thing in the morning.
He needs a complete checkup.

Recovery won't be easy.

Of course. Will do, Doctor.
I'll see you out.

They'll go tomorrow, Doctor.
I'll see to it.

I'll be expecting you.

I've got a really busy day tomorrow.

It's my first day at that nutjob's diner.
I can't take him to the emergency.

- How about I go, then?
- No way.

If that's how you feel, then go with him.

I'll handle the collection.
I'll just get Kartal to go.

Okay?

I'll go with you if you want.

Oh, wait. No, I can't.
I said I'd be back home for dinner.

- Did you tell anyone I brought him home?
- No.

- No, I haven't told anyone.
- Good.

- You guys mind if I get this?
- Yeah, sure. Go for it, Destan.

Is this urgent?

Of course, or I wouldn't be calling.

Listen, something came up.
Kemal's busy tomorrow.

I'll send you an address.
Go get the money they owe us, okay?

- All right.
- Where are you?

On a lovely fishing trip with my buddies.
What do you care where I am?

Newborns are smart and eager to learn.

This one hasn't lost physical contact
with its mother since the day it was born.

The baby is dependent

Unbelievable! Do you hear that? Ha!

- You hear that?
- Of course I did, Papa.

- I wonder how much he understands.
- I have no idea.

We're quick to laugh at the crazy,
but what makes them laugh?

I'm starving. I'm starving!

Mm!

Oh, wait. There's this show I watch.
Tonight's the season finale.

Go ahead. Watch it, honey. He won't know.

Do you know where Destan went?

I got ahold of him.
He'll go collect tomorrow.

- What about Kemal?
- He's got this thing to see to. It's fine.

- So where was Destan?
- He said he was on his way home.

Bediş, will you read my fortune
once I'm done watching the show?

No, sweetheart.
I won't be staying that long.

Tomorrow, I promise you.

I get it.

This is so exciting.

I have a feeling Halit
will declare his love in this episode.

Who's this Halit boy?

- He's the hunk of the show!
- Hmm.

Kemal is hotter, of course.

When did he fall asleep?

I'll go put him to bed.

Mm.

Destan started gambling again?

Neslihan knows what he's up to.

But she's playing dumb about it.

I put a call in to Haldun the King.
He said he saw him gambling.

Bet you she knows.

But she's keeping quiet.

She's doing her best.

She's always protected Destan.

I hate to say it, but you were
a little unlucky with your children.

A little?

I keep saying
that I wanna quit the business.

But I feel like
I have no one to hand it over to.

Kemal? My crazy brother's son.

This girl?

She's adopted, not even our blood.

What about my sons?

I've got three, and they're all
completely different from one another.

You'd think I had each of them
with a different woman.

I keep thinking
there's gotta be a mistake.

One's short-winded.

One still acts like a child.

And one's a gambling addict.

A deceiver.

- A liar.
- Hey, brother.

Heads or tails?

Beg your pardon?

Heads or tails, my man?

Uh… heads, I suppose.

That's fate.

Here.

Hey, you know what? Take it all.

Thanks, man.

AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION

It's the diner on the corner
after you make that turn.

The place is called "Afife."
You'll see the sign.

Yeah. I got it, I got it. I'm right
in front of the place. I'm not an idiot.

Why can't I get an advance?

An advance?
Hey, you got an envelope yesterday.

I forgot to pay the kid's tuition.

Destan, you know I pay those fees.

You don't pay for the school bus,
Neslihan. Don't start.

When we were on the phone yesterday,
were you at the school?

Sounds like you're gambling again.

If my uncle thinks I'm giving you
money off the books, I'm screwed.

Figure it out yourself.

Hi, I'll be right with you.

- Miss Neslihan sent me over.
- Ah.

I'm here for the payment with this guy.

My name's Destan Yanıklar.
This is Şahin Yanıklar.

We'll hang around here today,
wait for the money, and leave.

- Are you seriously gonna wait all day?
- Until you close up.

We'll keep an eye on you
in case you need it.

I'll sit close to the register.

It's by the window. Nice breeze.

I'll have coffee with a touch of sugar.

Haldun? Why haven't you
been answering my calls?

I'll go back tonight if I get credit.
That's how it is.

I can pay you next week.

Who said that?

My father?

My father's not the one
asking for money, I am.

He told you not to lend me money?

Is the infamous Haldun the King
really taking orders from him?

When have I ever not paid you back, huh?

Yeah, I don't think so, Haldun.

Thanks a lot, man. Thanks a lot.

Afife, could you get me some water please?

Hey, you. Where's the coffee?

This is not a coffeehouse. It's a diner.
We don't serve drinks without food.

There's a café across the street.
Go there.

You've got quite a mouth on you, lady.

What's going on?

"Lady"?

- It's fine. I'll get you a coffee.
- What is he doing?

You don't wanna mess with them.
That guy's trouble.

Psst! Afife? Is that him?

There's a couple of them.
They're not gonna give up.

You have to stay strong, Afife.
You'll get through this. I know it.

I guess we'll see.

Kemal.

Like I've said before,
he's totally depleted.

He took a lot of hits.

His blood work's quite concerning.
His immune system is shot.

It looks as if
he's trying to k*ll himself.

We'll do what we can.

He needs meds and lots of fluids.
I'll order an IV, and he needs rest.

He could collapse at any moment.
That's how weak he is.

There you have it.

Dr. Ardiç, please report
to the nurses' desk for consult.

YOU LOST

- Here.
- What's this?

Americano.

Is that what I asked for?

No. It's what I got you though.

Wait at the register.

Why? I'm fine here.

Şahin, wait at the register

- Do you really have to stand here?
- No, I--

Yeah. He does. Just in case.
You can make a mistake, who knows?

Hey, curly. Bring me
something to go with this coffee.

- My name is Fidan.
- Beautiful name. What does it mean?

- Hey bro. You need something?
- Ali, please don't make it worse.

Guys, go inside. We're good.
Come on, go. Let's go.

Ah, fine. as*h*le.

Sorry, what's your name?

Destan.

Destan, please take your things and move.

There's a nice table for two
in the garden. I need this four-top.

I'm fine here.

That's not the point. I really don't care.
You need to move to another table.

You've been rude to me since I got here.

That won't do at all.

Look, you've got a guy lurking
at the register. Go get some fresh air.

You trying to kick me out,
or am I imagining things?

Believe me,
you'd know if I was doing that.

That's not what's happening.
Why don't you sit outside?

You're quite a talker!

I'm warning you, watch your mouth.
Calling me "lady" was a really bad idea.

You don't say.

What are you gonna do if I run my mouth?

Ah f*ck! Why d'you get me
such a shitty take-out cup?

Calm down, Brother.
You're disturbing everyone.

- I am not your brother, you f*cking prick!
- Enough!

Don't you dare come near me!

- Don't you dare, I swear to God!
- Just--

- That's enough!
- Do you know who I am, man?

No one f*ck with me! Don't come near me!

Don't touch me! Get off, man!

- f*ck all of you!
- Cut it out, you piece of sh*t!

I'll k*ll all of you.
The hell are you doing?!

- Are you serious? Want a piece of me?
- You okay? Get out, now!

- My eyes!
- Stop! I have asthma!

Aren't you supposed to be tough? Get out!

Get out! Everyone, get out!
It'll burn your eyes.

Call the police!

- Everyone, just… Sorry. Go!
- Get out of here. Now!

Hey! Hey, Şahin!

- Hello, Neslihan?
- Şahin!

- My eyes are k*lling me.
- What the hell happened? Insane.

I knew it. I knew it was gonna get ugly.

I could sense it
as soon as those guys walked in.

We need to go to the hospital?
