01x02 - Like Someone In Love

Post by bunniefuu »

Mafu: Uenoyama-kun...

Rits: Hey.

Mafu: Are you going to... teach me guitar?

Rits: Don't expect serious lessons or anything...

Rits: But if I don't, you're never gonna drop it, so...

Mafu: Uenoyama-kun.

Mafu: Thank you for taking me under your wing.

Rits: What?

Mafu: It's different.

Rits: Huh?

Rits: What is?

Mafu: Mine's different from yours.

Rits: Uh... You mean the color? The model?

Mafu: The model...

Rits: Mine is a Fender Telecaster.

Rits: You have a Gibson hollow-body, don't you?

Mafu: Gibson? Hollow-body?

Rits: Do you seriously... have no clue what your guitar is?

Rits: He's so annoying...

Rits: Well, whatever. The model's not important.

Rits: As long as you can play it.

Rits: So, uh... You know how to tune it now, right?

Mafu: Yup.

Rits: That's not tuned at all.

Mafu: Huh?

Rits: It's off-key.

Mafu: Huh?

Mafu: Why, though?

Rits: Why?!

Rits: You tuned it, right?

Mafu: Yeah, yesterday.

Rits: Yesterday?!

Rits: The smallest things can throw your tuning off, you know.

Rits: Just putting your guitar in a case can move the pegs.

Rits: You need to tune it constantly.

Mafu: Oh...

Mafu: What's a peg?

The difference between people who are good at teaching guitar and those who aren't I'd like to talk about today's theme: "Those who are good at teaching guitar, and those who aren't." Last time, we talked about those who aren't very good at it...

Teach: And so...

Teach: Since answer is past tense, we can rule that out.

Rits: It's probably too early to teach him chords...

Teach: Answer applies to the last question, so we can also rule it out.

Telecaster

Bridge Pickup Pick guard Neck Head Pegs

Gibson How to play

Ritsu: But being able to play a song would make him feel like he can actually do it.

Teach: Which leaves us with answers and .

Ritsu: Should I start with how to read tabs, then?

Teach: Here, we can see the "that" in answer is the key.

Ritsu: Nah.

Teach: The question involves, "That it's out of date and you should never use it"...

Ritsu: What the heck was I doing when I first started out?

Haru: How's that?!

Ritsu: Oh, the part you changed up a bit?

Ritsu: I think it works.

Haru: Yay!

Haru: What'd you think, Akihiko?

Aki: Sounds good to me.

Haru: Could you sound like you mean it?!

Haru: Wh-What?

Aki: Sounds good to me.

Haru: That's no different!

Aki: We're gonna go have a smoke.

Rits: Sure.

Rits: Oh, Kaji-san. Haruki-san.

Rits: Um... Is it okay if I bring Sato next time?

Aki: Sato?

Haru: Oh, Mafuyu-chan?

Aki: Oh!

Rits: It's probably better if he just plays as much as he can at first, instead of overthinking stuff.

Rits: And I thought he'd have an easier time playing in a studio...

Aki: So you decided to look after him, huh?

Aki: Sure, why not?

Haru: Yeah.

Rits: Thanks!

Aki: That said, you being so concerned with what we think isn't like you, Uesama.

Haru: It really isn't.

Rits: I thought I should at least ask...

Aki: Well, aren't you a good boy?

Haru: He sure is.

Aki: The best.

Haru: He's such a good boy.

Rits: If you're not gonna take your break, we're going back to practice!

Aki: Hold up. Just one smoke.

Haru: Back in a sec.

Rits: Morning.

Mafu: Good morning.

Rits: Are you free today?

Mafu: Huh?

Rits: You can come by and watch our band practice if you want.

Mafu: Really?

Rits: Yeah. Just don't get in the way.

Itaya: Uenoyama!

Itaya: Wait, you're skipping out on basketball again?

Rits: Yeah, my bad.

Kasa: Uenoyama-kun.

Mafu: Uenoyama-kun...

Rits: They said it's fine for you to play, too, as long as it's during our breaks.

Mafu: Really?

Rits: Yeah. So make sure you say thank you.

Mafu: Okay. Thank you.

Rits: Not to me.

Mafu: The guy with long hair...

Rits: Haruki-san?

Mafu: Is he a college student?

Rits: Yeah.

Rits: Wait... Actually, I think he's a grad student...

Rits: I think he was studying something to do with video.

Mafu: And the guy with the piercings?

Rits: That's Kaji-san.

Rits: Kaji-san's a second-year at the same college Haruki-san goes to.

Rits: You know, you'd better remember their faces and names by the time we get there.

Mafu: 'Kay.

Mafu: You're amazing, Uenoyama-kun.

Rits: Huh? Me?

Mafu: You're in a band with a college student and a graduate student.

Rits: I don't see what's so amazing...

Voice: Please reload your IC card.

Mafu: One second.

Rits: Sato, over here.

Rits: Jeez, you've been there before.

Mafu: Yeah.

Mafu: So, with guitar...

Mafu: Do you practice a lot?

Rits: Well, yeah. You can't get any good without practice.

Mafu: Oh...

Rits: You're not having second thoughts now, are you?

Mafu: No!

Rits: Good.

Rits: Hey, guys.

Haru: Welcome. I've been waiting for you.

Mafu: Thanks for having me.

Rits: Sit over there somewhere.

Mafu: 'Kay.

Haru: Mafuyu, you wanna play a little before we start?

Rits: Are you sure, Haruki-san?

Haru: Yeah, totally. Akihiko's late anyway.

Haru: You want to play, don't you?

Mafu: Yes!

Rits: Are you done tuning?

Mafu: Yeah.

Rits: Then go ahead and plug this in.

Mafu: Plug it in?

Rits: Here, let me.

Rits: Make sure it's plugged in all the way.

Mafu: What is it?

Rits: A guitar cable. It connects your guitar with the amp.

Mafu: Amp?

Rits: This. It makes your sound louder.

Rits: First, make sure the power is off and the volume is at ,

Rits: then plug this into the amp.

Rits: And then turn on the power.

Rits: Got it?

Mafu: Yeah.

Haru: That was so easy to understand!

Rits: Make sure you connect it in that order.

Mafu: 'Kay.

Mafu: What happens if you get it wrong?

Rits: Give it a try.

Haru: Wait, wait, wait, wait!

Rits: He'll learn better if he messes up on his own.

Haru: Yeah, but think about our ears, please!

Mafu: I did it.

Rits: Turn up the volume and play a bit.

Mafu: 'Kay.

Rits: It'll be really loud if you turn it up too much at first.

Mafu: 'Kay.

Rits: This should be fine.

Rits: I know I told you to play a bit, but I guess you don't know any chords...

Rits: Maybe C would—

Mafu: I want to do the first one you played for me!

Rits: Oh, that.

Rits: Right here.

Rits: The second one.

Rits: And then this one and this one...

Rits: No, no. Use your middle finger and ring finger.

Rits: Okay, that's enough!

Aki: Hey.

Rits: Look, we get it! You're happy!

Aki: The hell?

Rits: You can stop now!

Rits: First, here.

Mafu: 'Kay.

Rits: You'll generally play here, between the pickups.

: 'Kay.

Rits: You can just try to memorize a couple of chords to start off with.

Rits: You just need to have some idea of what they sound like.

Mafu: 'Kay.

Haru: You know, Uecchi...

Haru: He seems the type to be like, "It's all about me! Me!"

Aki: Hm?

Haru: I'm talking about Uenoyama.

Aki: Ah.

Haru: But I think he's actually pretty good at taking care of others.

Aki: Uh, sure.

Haru: Right? You think so, too?

Aki: Well, I mean, he's been that way from the beginning.

Haru: Has he?

Haru: I thought he was really conceited at first.

Aki: Well, but... he doesn't go running off on his own,

Aki: and for his age, he's really good at listening to the sounds around him.

Aki: He might've seemed bratty just because, y'know, he's going through puberty.

Aki: Deep down, I think he's really a good, honest guy.

Haru: Wow. I'm surprised how perceptive you are about the people around you...

Haru: with that scary face.

Aki: What's that got to do with it?!

Aki: Actually, how do I say this...

Haru: What?

Aki: Never mind. Let's head back.

Haru: Sure thing.

Aki: I'm not sure if it's that he's good at taking care of people,

Aki: or if he has a strong desire to protect them.

Aki: Which could also mean...

Rits: You can pick whatever song you want,

Rits: but you should master it.

Mafu: 'Kay.

Rits: Start with the intro, the very beginning of the song.

Mafu: 'Kay.

Rits: Once you're able to do that, learn the verse.

Rits: The verse is...

Mafu: 'Kay.

Rits: All you ever say is "'kay" and "yeah"! Are you actually listening?!

Mafu: Yeah.

Rits: I have no idea if I'm actually getting through to him!

Mafu: Brrum, brrum, brrum...

Haru: Heya.

Aki: Looks like you're hard at work.

Haru: You're starting to actually look like a guitarist.

Haru: Say, Mafuyu...

Mafu: Yes?

Haru: If you're serious about playing music, there's one thing you absolutely need.

Haru: You're gonna have to something about that soon.

Aki: Ah, that...

Rits: The thing that I always struggle to have enough of...

Mafu: What's "that"?

Haru: Whoops. We scared him.

Guy: here with my ever-so-unpopular friend, Haru-chan,

Guy: and I'll be showing you a cute way of styling your hair.

Guy: We'll start with some basic styling tips.

Guy: Okay, we're going to take a section of Haru-chan's hair and start curling.
Haru-chan has super broad shoulders korotan : Wait lolololol

Mafuyu: That's Haruki-san?

Aki: Yup.

Aki: "How to blow your man's mind! Cute and sexy styling seminar."

Haru: Shut it.

Mafu: That's a part-time job, too?

Haru: Yup. My friend asks me to help out every once in a while.

Rits: You also work at some fancy café, don't you?

Haru: "Some fancy café"?

Aki: Your hair really is pretty, though.

Aki: Do you get it professionally treated?

Haru: Like... once a month?

Rits: My sister gets that done, too.

Haru: R-Really? It can be pretty rough...

Rits: Well, not if they're rich...

Mafu: Nope.

Aki: Figures.

Haru: All right, let's give this some real thought.

Mafu: A convenience store?

Rits: Franchise convenience stores feed you.

Aki: You can take home the old stuff.

Haru: You guys need to eat things besides bentos!

Haru: Come to think of it, don't you both work for a moving company, too?

Rits: I wanna get as buff as Kaji-san!

Aki: Also, for temp work,

Aki: I do motorcycle deliveries,

Aki: work as a waiter at events...

Aki: I'm a security guard sometimes, too.

Haru: Hey!

Haru: When did you do all that?

Aki: You wanted to see?

Rits: Why didn't you invite me to work with you?

Aki: Pretty sure high schoolers can't do those.

Mafu: High school kids can't work?

Mafu: Finding a part-time job is hard...

Haru: It's way too early to give up, Mafuyu.

Haru: There are plenty of places where high school kids can work.

Haru: Oh, I know. How about a concert venue?

Mafu: A concert... venue?

Aki: That's a good idea. You'd be able to see some shows for free, too.

Haru: Uesama, your face...

Aki: You hate the idea that much?

mafu: Why?

Rits: Because I don't wanna hurl from seeing some high school cover band

Rits: playing basic-a*s J-pop songs.

Haru: Don't say mean things like that!

Ritsu: Hey.

Rits: I know you want to play guitar, but how good do you want to be at it?

Mafu: How good?

Rits: Do you want to be able to play just a little,

Rits: or actually be able to play songs?

Rits: I know I keep mentioning this, but I've never taught anyone before.

Rits: I have no idea if I'm even doing it right.

Rits: And you're fine with that?

Mafu: I'm not sure...

Mafu: But I had fun.

Itaya: Hey,

Itaya: are you guys, like, super good friends suddenly?

Rits: Huh?

Rits: Who's "you guys"?

Itaya: Y'know, you and the kid from the class next door...

Itaya: What's his name again? Suzuki? Tanaka?

Rits: Sato?

Itaya: Yeah, him! Why are you guys so buddy-buddy lately?

Itaya: You've been hanging out with him instead of us, right?

Itaya: I mean, you and Suzuki—

Rits: It's Sato.

Kasa: Well, neither of you are exactly sociable.

Kasa: You're in different classes and have different personalities...

Kasa: All the girls have been wondering what's up, too.

Ritsu: They're actually wondering?

Kasa: Yup. I mean, Sato-kun's pretty hot, y'know?

Kasa: He has a lot of secret fans,

Kasa: but he seems so unapproachable.

Itaya: Hey, Uenoyama.

Itaya: Look. It's Suzuki again.

Kasa: It's Sato-kun, jeez!

Rits: Sorry. See you guys later.

Itaya: Sure.

Rits: From top to bottom, and then you go back up.

Rits: Right.

Rits: When you do that over and over, it sounds like this.

Rits: Sato's a much faster learner than I thought he'd be.

Rits: Despite not knowing the first thing about music, he has a keen ear.

Rits: It's sort of nice, watching someone grow.

Rits: But he's still a mystery to me.

Rits: I'm not sure why he's so interested in music, either.

Rits: And his guitar isn't one you'd usually see a beginner,

Rits: much less a high schooler, owning...

Rits: Would a complete amateur buy such a classy model?

Rits: How much did that even cost?

Rits: Hey.

Rits: Did you get that guitar from your dad or something?

Mafu: No. I don't have a dad.

Rits: Huh? Oh, sorry.

Rits: Uh, in that case... What kind of music do you like?

Rits: Do you have a favorite song?

Rits: You must have at least one...

Rits: Am I getting through to him?

Mafu: I dunno.

Rits: Damn it!

Mafu: I'm not sure if it's one I actually like,

Mafu: but there is a song that plays in my head all the time.

Rits: You freakin' wack job!

Rits: What's it called?

Mafu: I don't know the name.

Mafu: Um...

Mafu: Oh. But it sounds like this.

Mafu: It sounds like that...

Ritsu: What the hell... was that?

Ritsu: It's almost like...

Mafu: Uenoyama-kun?

Ritsu: Hey!

Ritsu: Do you want to join our band?
