02x06 - Tumbleweeds and UAPs

Post by bunniefuu »

NARRATOR: Tonight, on
Beyond Skinwalker Ranch.

This area here was the number
four UFO hotspot in the nation.

I think you might
be climbing the chart.

What is that?

So, how can a signal be
all around us like that?

I mean, we'd have to be sitting
on top of the origin point.

But why is it here?

This is the heart of
whatever's going on.

Oh, my god.

There's the light.

It's right along the ridge now.

It's about to go behind it.

Well, it's gone.

NARRATOR: For years,
scientists have

been working to reveal the
secrets of Skinwalker Ranch.

But is it possible
that the clues

to unlock the
mystery are located

beyond the borders of this
hub of high strangeness?

Wow.

NARRATOR: Now, an ex-CIA
agent and a veteran journalist

have been recruited
by the Skinwalker team

to go on a high stakes
mission across America.

Look at all this
activity that's happening.

- That's unbelievable.
- That is right over our heads.

That's it.
That's it right there.

NARRATOR: The goal...
uncover evidence that

may finally expose the truth.

How is this happening?

Now it's going
to get interesting.

[expl*si*n]
- Look, it's moving.

Look at that.

This is just the beginning.

[theme music]

Guys, it's great to have
you back at the table.

Tell us about your
next destination.

It's good to be back.

And I think we've got one
that is surprising to us

in a lot of ways.

And first of all,
really, in just how much

it seems to be under the radar.

We want to go to a place called
Anza-Borrego, which is about

Never heard of it.

We didn't really
hear of it much either.

We came across it
in our research

and found out that
it has a long history

of high strangeness and
significant military presence.

As we started digging into
this place, what we found

is it has a strong parallel
with Skinwalker Ranch.

It has a history
of cryptids, UFOs.

Not just government
activity, but kind

of discrete or covert government
activity... black helicopters,

nuclear testing, advanced
weapons testing, et cetera.

Yeah, I can't help but
notice that this spot

is right in between everything.

I mean, you've got
military bases,

and then you've got
west of San Diego,

where the Nimitz event
occurred, and where

other things have been seen even
in the last couple of years.

It's just it's amazing.

It's kind of like a central
nexus I've never heard of.

Anza-Borrego is,
actually, it's a state park

in this region of California.

It's the biggest state
park in the state.

Borrego springs
is in the desert.

Anza-borrego is more
up in the mountains.

So these may be two
different sets of phenomena.

Got my interest.

Never heard of it.

I'm really interested, yeah.

There's a phenomenon that they
call Goldie that seems to be

reported more in the Anza area.

It is some kind of aerial
unidentified object

or phenomenon that happens
during the daytime,

as well as during the nighttime.
- What does it look like?

Well, there's a lot of
different descriptions of it.

There's some people
have described it

as a stationary
light that appears.

Others have described
it as something

that moves up and down.

One way or another,
it is some kind

of optical aerial phenomenon.

That sounds really
intriguing to me.

Because a lot of these
stories, a lot of times,

they may be really observations
of something that happened.

Whether mundane or
extraterrestrial,

you know, you don't know
until you go and look into it.

But it might lead
you in a direction

that there might
be some good data.

You've got an opportunity
to start putting

some pins on the map then.

Exactly.

Exactly.

We know that we want to
take some instrumentation,

see if we can dig deeper
into what stories exist

and what we can measure
about those stories

to bring back something
more concrete.

We're going to be
especially interested

if you get a sighting.

This is a vast area.

And I think Andy
and I have sketched

out sort of our plan of attack.

We're going to start
in Borrego springs,

then we're going to move up into
the mountains toward Anza, where

we've gotten all these reports
of this Goldie phenomenon

and try and put some data behind
that, try and run that down.

So it's sort of two phases,
but we've got a lot of ground

to cover.
- We've got our marching orders.

It feels like we do.
Ready to go.

- Good luck, fellas.
- Good luck with this one.

Thanks, guys.

Keep you posted.

[ominous music]

This is a location I'm actually

really excited about
because I don't

know that anybody
really has an idea

of what's going on out here.

Yeah, I mean, look at
this huge sweeps of desert,

mountain ranges all around.

And what we've also
got is the long history

of military presence out here.

We're stepping into this
investigation with friends

already on the ground.

We've got Derek
Hayes and Dave Flora,

who created the documentary
Shadows in the Desert,

about the Anza-Borrego area.

And they themselves have had
sightings with their own eyes

during that investigation.

So not only am I
hoping that we'll

be able to get their stories,
their firsthand accounts,

but I'm also hoping we'll be
able to tap into their network

and see where the data
and the network take us.

And maybe, most
important of all,

is just to help us figure
out where to begin,

because this area is so vast.

NARRATOR: Andy and
Paul's first stop

as they're entering Anza-Borrego
is the Montezuma Valley

Overlook, which will
give them a vantage

point over Borrego Springs.

Welcome to the Borrego area.

This is an amazing view.

Can you give us a sense
of where we are right now?

Sure, yeah.

We're looking at Borrego
Springs right now.

It's been there for a
little over a hundred years.

In the distance over that ridge
there is Clark Dry Lake Bed.

It's a lake bed that had a
lot of military activity,

NASA activity there.

And then, of course, if
you go over the mountains

here behind us,
Anza is up there.

A lot of strange stuff
that goes on over there.

And there's activity
throughout this whole area.

The whole area, you know.

This is basically the
heart of it, I would say,

what you're seeing down there.

And then it extends
out from there

to encompass just
a ton of phenomena

that goes on around this area.

There's Bigfoot
stuff, ghost stuff,

there's all these
lights that we see.

And the most prominent thing
these days is the UFOs.

There's a lot of UFOs seen in
this area and military presence

of some sort.
- Yeah.

So a lot of these sightings seem

to correlate with the military.

You know, people will
see something strange,

and suddenly a
couple of helicopters

come flying by or a couple jets.

There's some sort of
connection here that we

haven't yet figured out.

And we had that
happen to us, too.

Everywhere we went
seemed like there

was some kind of helicopter or
something around in the area.

Several times, we were out
in the middle of nowhere,

and suddenly these helicopters
would be circling overhead.

Head down this...

Hang on.

You hear them?

Back again.

I think it's over this one.

Yeah, right there.

Right there.

Yeah, I mean, look, that's
like the eighth, ninth time.

Every time we go somewhere,
these things show up.

[ominous music]

There's not a lot publicly known

about the strange
things that happened

here in the Anza-Borrego area.

You know, it's a funny
thing about Clark's dry lake

that is nobody likes to
talk about it around here.

We asked a lot of
questions and everybody's

like, it's just kind
of an area over there.

We don't talk about it.

We don't go there.

They had this satellite array
that the University of Maryland

set up.

And they used this antenna
array to conduct research

on extraterrestrial physics.

NARRATOR: In 1959, the
University of Maryland

partnered with NASA
to create the Clark

Lake Radio Observatory.

This included a
large radio telescope

array consisting of 720 antennas
lined across the dry lake bed.

In 1979, NASA and
the SETI Institute,

or Search for
Extraterrestrial Intelligence,

use the array to search for
UFOs and extraterrestrial life.

The facility was
closed and dismantled

in 1986, leaving no trace.

And to add strangeness
to it, a lot of the UFO

reports that we get, they
seem to either originate

or be landing in that area.

I mean, it sounds like Clark
Dry Lake is our place to start.

NARRATOR: The team
heads 15 miles

northeast to Clark Dry Lake Bed
to begin their investigation.

Wow.

Look at this.

I thought I'd been to
some wide open spaces,

but this is a whole
new level, wow.

This is about as wide
open as you can get.

Wow.

Clark Dry Lake Bed.

Now, just imagine this 60
years ago with an antenna array

just covering this whole basin.

I can see why they picked it.

I mean, you've got this natural
bowl effect here, the shielding

from the mountains.

We have such a wide
area here to explore.

I would love to
get some baseline

readings on this location.

Yep, sounds good.

NARRATOR: To measure
the baseline,

the team will use
their spectrum analyzer

to check for any
anomalous radio signals.

They're specifically looking in
the privileged frequency zone

reserved for Earth-to-space and
space-to-Earth communication

between 1.4 and 1.8 gigahertz.

I don't know if we've
ever seen it that flat.

This is showing us that
there's almost no radio

energy in the area at all.

I mean, this is one of the
lowest background readings we've

ever gotten, which confirms
why they would pick

this as a research station.

These mountains are blocking
signals from any communities,

any cities in the area.

This is one of those natural
places where the Earth just

creates a quiet spot.

This is also a location
where a number of sightings

have been reported,
is that right?

At least going in and out
of here, they've said, yeah.

- Going in and out of here?
- That's what we've heard

That's what it seems like.

Yeah, we've heard a lot of
reports of people seeing things

flying over this area,
flying into this area,

out of this area.

So there seems like there's
some sort of correlation here.

Got it.

You all had a sighting of
your own somewhere in this area,

right?

Yeah, whatever it was we
saw was right over this saddle

over here.

Just in the distance,
just off the lake bed.

And, you know, whatever
it was, it was huge.

It covered, you know, a good
bit of that horizon over there.

An array of lights in a line.

Just the orange ba*ls
floating there in the sky.

By the time we got down low
enough to see them again,

they were gone.

That sounds like
an interesting area

to keep an eye on.

So we're going to start
getting our equipment organized.

We've actually got
another expert coming in,

a guy named Dave Mason, who's
worked on Skinwalker Ranch.

Yeah, if something
happens in the sky tonight,

we're going to make sure we do
everything we can to find it.

All right, I'm excited.

[ominous music]

We've got quite the
team out here tonight.

Dave and Derek, meet Dave Mason.

He's a guy who's come in
from the team at Skinwalker.

And Dave, David and
Derek are documentarians.

They're really familiar
with this area.

They actually pointed
us to this location.

NARRATOR: The team
is set up at Clark

Dry Lake Bed, a retired NASA
and SETI UFO research site.

They're joined by Skinwalker
veteran Dave Mason, a technology

expert and inventor
of devices that detect

and interact with anomalies.

OK, so I've got high resolution

flicker and then differential.

It really just gives you
a lot of different ways

of looking at
temperature changes

rather than just using
the conventional FLIR

technology, which is
very sensitive to that.

But this steps it
up another notch.

NARRATOR: The differential FLIR
is a modified thermal camera

that enhances minute changes in
thermal energy, which can help

to identify phenomena not
visible to the naked eye or

conventional thermal cameras.

The colors red,
yellow, and white

represent hotter temperature
changes on the camera.

Purple and dark blue show
colder temperature changes.

In 2022, at Skinwalker
Ranch, Dave Mason

used the differential
FLIR to detect

strange hot patches between the
triangle and the south field.

There's something right there.

What could be down there?

It's going to be really great
to have your enhanced flare

technology here.

Well, being able to combine
these, the high resolution

flare with the
differential flare,

we'll be able to extract
more information.

Got it.

OK, great.

NARRATOR: In addition
to Dave's equipment,

Andy and Paul will be
monitoring the radio spectrum

using their spectrum analyzers.

All right, Paul, I've got
two spectrum analyzers running.

NARRATOR: And deploying
their AI-powered UFODAP

system to surveil for UAPs.

UFODAPs are live.

NARRATOR: With all this
technology in hand,

the team hopes to
capture evidence

of the numerous unidentified
aircraft reported

in the area, and
possibly more data

to explain Derek and Dave's
craft sighting in 2021.

Stand by, one second.

Paul, I've been having a
hell of a time trying to get

our equipment to stay alive.

Everything is just...
is just draining away.

Yep.

Even our solid-state batteries
that power this stuff,

even those are failing.

And we are actually relying on
recharging them using our cars.

Yeah.

So we're just going to run
stuff off the vehicles tonight.

It's the only thing we have.

If we want persistent power,
if we want consistent power,

we're going to have to run
it off of an external source

like a car.

Well, I think let's...

let's flip the switches
and get to work.

Let's do it.

All right.

All right.

We've got power going for now.
We're back in business.

That's good.
- I'm ready when you are.

All right.

Let me scroll
through the spectrum

just so we can get a
sense of baseline here.

OK.

And we're already seeing
multiple peaks here.

Right there, the
line is on 1.600.

And do you see how
after that point,

there's no spikes
like that anymore?

SPEAKER: Yeah.
Yeah.

Now what we're going
to do is pull out

an antenna that you can point.

So we'll find out what direction
these signals are coming from.

So we're cued right in
on 1.6 gigahertz, sir.

Ready when you are.

SPEAKER: I'm sweeping clockwise.

NARRATOR: The
spectrum analyzer has

detected a signal in the
restricted 1.6 gigahertz zone.

Now the team will use
their log periodic antenna.

By rotating the log periodic
antenna 360 degrees,

it can isolate and hone
in on the exact direction

a radio signal is coming from.

With this equipment,
the team will attempt

to pinpoint the origin of
the 1.6 gigahertz signal

at the lake bed.

SPEAKER: It's dead now.

Dead now.

OK, so I'm gonna move
back from right to left,

looking out at the
saddle, between the two

peaks of the saddle.

Oop, oop, oop.
Look at this.

Look at this.
SPEAKER: Yep.

Wow.

Look at all of this
energy in here, Paul.

Wow, that's right... aimed
right at the saddle,

right where you were
pointing at earlier today.

Yeah, same direction
where we saw those lights.

Yeah.

NARRATOR: The team has
determined that a 1.6 gigahertz

signal for Earth-to-space or
space-to-Earth communication

is coming from where Derek and
Dave filmed their strange craft.

My gosh!

Wow.

Look at the size.
SPEAKER: Looks like a heartbeat.

Exactly.

Exactly.

This is in an area where there
was no radio energy earlier.

Like, we were out here.

It was a flat line spectrum.

Look at this, Paul.

Look at how intense this is.

Whoa!

That's the brightest
change in differential

we've had all night, David.
- Look at that.

That's crazy.

This strip of mountain is
now increasing in temperature.

NARRATOR: This
thermal anomaly that

stretches across the same
area where the team located

a 1.6 gigahertz signal is now
the second piece of technology

that shows strange
data where Derek

and Dave filmed a possible UAP.

It's really important to
understand that the differential

flare is actually showing
us changes in temperature,

not just static temperature.

So we are literally
watching the temperature

in the mesa increase over
time while we're sitting here.

That's something we've
never seen before,

and that's something I
have no way of explaining.

I actually saw this
happen at Skinwalker Ranch.

We saw thermal anomalies
that we could not explain.

SPEAKER: Erik, it's heating
up on top of the mesa.

Are you kidding me?

SPEAKER: You should see this.

This is fascinating.

Right there, that's where
the stone circle is.

Look how hot it's getting.

I... I don't know
how to explain it.

I don't know what
would cause that.

I don't know either.

That's crazy.

Whoa!

Everything just died.

Car just died, too?

Yeah.

Car just turned itself off?

The car just shut down?

I'm not sure what's going on.

It just cut off.

What could explain that?

I guess it's part
of the phenomenon.

We're just getting these
weird, like, cascading

failures out here.

Yeah.

We're having
mechanical and energy

failures here left and right.

But the temperature
is comfortable.

The equipment has all
been fully charged.

Everything was tested
before we brought it out.

And yet still, we're seeing
this incredible drain of power.

There we go.

I gotta go and individually
power these guys up.

All right.

It's powering back up.

What is that light?

What is that light?

Derek, David, what is that?

We're just getting these
weird, like, cascading

failures out here.

What is that light?

NARRATOR: The team
is at Clark Dry

Lake bed, a spot once monitored
by NASA for UFO activity.

Right after losing power
to all of their equipment,

they've spotted some type
of orb low to the ground.

Let me get it on Sionyx.

If it's headlights or
otherwise, it's in the middle

of an open desert.

SPEAKER: So there's no road.

SPEAKER: There's no road at all.

Here, take a look for yourself.

There's nothing out there
for it to be driving on.

And there's no heat source
coming from it either.

I mean, if it is, it's
not that much hotter

than whatever's around it.

Strange.

I don't understand why there
would be a vehicle at all.

Unless they drove
over open desert.

And it's... it's pretty muddy.
SPEAKER: It's muddy.

Yeah.

SPEAKER: Dangerous
to be out that far.

SPEAKER: Not smart.

They'd have to come from
the other side of the valley

because they didn't pass us.

SPEAKER: We would
have spotted somebody.

SPEAKER: It just faded out.
- It's gone.

I don't see it at all right now.

SPEAKER: Yeah, it's gone.

That was... that was weird.

Whoa.

Wow.

It's right along the ridge now.

Now it's in a bit of a saddle.

I see it.

And this is the sort
of thing that we've

had reported multiple times,
these glowing orbs that

almost look like fireballs.

It's about to go behind it.

It's gone.

Well, that was strange.

That felt like we
were being watched.

- All desert out there.
- Yeah.

No, there's nothing out there.

There's something
going on out here,

and I do not know what it is.

We get some kind of strange
lights low on the horizon.

And at the same time,
we've got some kind of orb.

You know, it seems to be
traversing the ridge above us.

I don't know what
connects these things.

Are we being observed?

Are we being monitored?

Are we triggering these things?

This is just weird.

This is nothing like... nothing
we've ever seen before.

I don't know what to make of it,

but I can't wait to show
it to Travis and Erik.

Absolutely.

On the differential
cameras, this

matches what they've
seen on Skinwalker Ranch,

and then the radio signal
coming from exactly

where Dave and Derek
captured the strange lights.

And then we also had
the orb sighting.

Yeah.

I mean, there's just... there's
a lot going on out here.

I see why you guys made
a documentary about this.

Exactly.

NARRATOR: The next day, the
team meets up in Borrego Springs

to review the findings from
last night's investigation.

David, I'm really excited to
see what you were able to pull

from your records last
night in Clark Dry Lake bed,

an area that we went to
because you told us there

were strange things there.

I'm very excited too,
because this differential FLIR

technology is not
commercially available,

and we picked up anomalies
that were not detected

on the conventional FLIR.

I'd like to show
you what we have.

Yeah, please.

So what we have is...

this is sped up 10 times.

We have these stringed
objects coming through.

This was not detected on
the conventional FLIR,

just on the differential flare.

Now, hold on one second.

Can you pause for just a second?

Sure.

Look at that.

Have you seen this kind
of activity in the sky

before with these
in Skinwalker Ranch?

Not that particular activity.

We certainly saw
anomalies on the mesa.

You know, around the
mesa at Skinwalker.

You have not seen anything
in the sky like this.

Not quite like that.
No.

So this is something
completely new.

Yeah.

I wasn't expecting to see this.

Just to reiterate,
what we're seeing here

is changes in
temperature, right?

Yeah, just a change in
temperature, but not an

actual readback of temperature.

So if it's a brighter color,
it is a warmer temperature

relative to background.

What do you think this might be?

What can you plausibly
explain this as?

If they were detected in
the conventional flare, I...

I would presume it would
be high-altitude aircraft.

But because it
wasn't detected, I...

I can't explain it.

We have other phenomenon.

This is the differential
flare again.

This is the top of
the mesa right here.

And we start to see objects...

SPEAKER: Wow.

SPEAKER: Whoa.

Whoa.

DAVID MASON: just
getting detected.

There's two of
them side by side.

ANDREW BUSTAMANTE:
Totally in sync.

Look at that.

SPEAKER: It's wild.

SPEAKER: Yeah, wild
is exactly what it is.

And we have another object.

This was also not detected
with the conventional flare.

It'll come right on this
corner, very top right.

SPEAKER: Oh, hello.

SPEAKER: Wow.

What is that?

Look at that.

I mean, the fact
that we have seen now

multiple sets of objects
flying through the sky captured

on differential flare
that we were just totally

blind to with our naked
eyes, and blind to

with the conventional
flare, too.

Right.

That's the really puzzling
thing is it wasn't

detected with the conventional.

So we have something happening
that cannot be explained.

How does this feel
to the two of you?

You guys did the research,
filmed, and recorded,

and you're airing a documentary
about the strangeness

in this region.

It's validation for sure.

I mean, we've heard
so many reports

about this kind of thing.

And it's great to finally,
you know, lay eyes on it.

I've definitely seen
something I was not expecting.

I was anticipating we would
get something of interest,

but not this.

This has really been a bonus.

Well, this is an incredible
start to this investigation.

You know who you
ought to talk to is

someone we had on the film,
Roland Vellanoweth up in Anza.

He knows that place like
the back of his hand.

He's seen stuff.

He'd be somebody
you'd want to talk to.

Yeah.
Thanks, guys.

That's a great lead.
- Yeah.

Appreciate it.

Of course.

NARRATOR: After finishing their
investigation at Clark Dry Lake

bed in Borrego Springs,
the team is now

moving 30 miles Northwest
to the Thomas Mountain

overlook next to
the town of Anza

to investigate a
legendary light phenomenon

frequently cited by the
locals that they call Goldie.

Since most of the
Goldie sightings

happened during the day,
the team is conducting

a daytime investigation.

They're joining longtime
resident and leader of the Anza

Paranormal Group,
Roland Vellanoweth,

and his daughter, Lauren
Hohnbaum at Thomas Mountain.

We are actually
in the most common

spot for sighting
things out here,

the lookout on Thomas Mountain.

Yeah.

Most of the lights that I've
seen have been over there.

Really?

Interesting.

There's usually three orbs
that will pop up half the time.

And one, maybe two, would
find themselves over Thomas.

And then eventually, they
would all be over here.

And then they'll just disappear.

ANDREW BUSTAMANTE: It's
really interesting.

LAUREN HOHNBAUM:
Yeah, that was Goldie.

All of that happened
right here, just off.

LAUREN HOHNBAUM: Yeah.
ROLAND VELLANOWETH: Right.

Right here.

Perfect viewpoint.

Well, we've got our kit set up.

We've got thermal cameras.

That's what you see
here with the colors.

This is the overall
ambient temperature.

And then here's the temperature
focused on Thomas Mountain.

OK.

These black and white
images you see are tied

to our AI-powered UFODAPs that
are always watching the sky,

recording everything they
see, and running it against

the database to determine
whether or not it's known

or potentially unknown.

Got it.

And these are
spectrum analyzers.

They're looking at
the radio spectrum.

Let's go ahead and hit
record on everything.

You hear that?

ANDREW BUSTAMANTE:
Can you zoom in?

Is that a black helicopter?

NARRATOR: As the team finishes
setting up their equipment,

Andy notices something overhead.

ANDREW BUSTAMANTE:
That looks like

a privately-owned helicopter,
but it's all blacked out.

I'd like to say
it's unusual, but

a lot of people in the valley
have seen these multiple times.

So that would be unlisted.

Do we have an FAA tracker?

Yeah, we do.

And there's our helicopter.

Let's see what its
transponder code is.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

So it is registered.

Yeah.

No destination available.

Private owner.

PAUL BEBAN: Yeah.

Bell 505 Jet Ranger
X. So check this out.

It's a recycled tail number.

Oh, interesting.

So the original tail number
was listed to a aircraft

that was taken out of service.

Usually, what you want to do is
take a tail number, especially

from a passenger
jet, and then move

it to another passenger jet.

But to move it to
helicopter is interesting.

It's a completely
different airframe.

PAUL BEBAN: Yeah.

Roland, you were saying that
you've also seen privately-owned

aircraft that not
necessarily attributed

to military or police.

And they're not
all this well-marked.

I'm not the only one, actually.

A lot of people have
reported blacked out

helicopters during
events that are going on.

PAUL BEBAN: What do
you mean during events?

Well, during, like, when
they see Goldie around.

My youngest daughter,
she was driving and was

being followed by helicopters.
- Like it was tracking it?

Exactly.

I wouldn't be surprised
if they know we're here.

I was going to say, a helicopter

tracking your daughter
after she sees something,

and we are here literally
to see something.

We're not trying to hide either.

We couldn't be more obvious.

We're just out here
in the wide open.

NARRATOR: Now that the
helicopter is gone,

the team begins their
investigation at the Thomas

Mountain overlook.

For this experiment, they
will be surveying the area

around Thomas Mountain,
hoping to capture

any evidence of the
strange phenomenon

that the locals call Goldie.

All right.

We're recording.

All right.

We've got motion on both
of our spectrum analyzers,

and we already have some
interesting activity here, too.

Look at this, Paul.

Whoa.

Right out of the gate.

Yeah.

I'm going to do a zoom out here
to look at a broader spectrum.

LAUREN HOHNBAUM: Oh, wow.

PAUL BEBAN: Whoa.

As soon as we dialed
in 1.56 gigahertz.

Now watch this.

LAUREN HOHNBAUM: No way.

We change 0.01 gigahertz, and
that's the signal that we see.

PAUL BEBAN: It's a
really complex signal.

Are we even in a frequency range

that anyone would commonly use?

No, that's a great point,
because the frequency range that

we're in right
now, it's reserved

for Earth-to-space and
space-to-Earth communications.

The federal law
prevents anybody without

a federal license from
being able to transmit

at this frequency.
- I see.

Interesting.
OK.

So what I think I'd like to
do, Paul, is let's do a 360

from our log periodic antenna.

Yeah.

NARRATOR: After detecting
an anomalous radio signal

on the privileged 1.56
gigahertz frequency,

the team is now going to use
their directional antenna to do

a 360 degree scan of the
area to see if they can

pinpoint the exact location
where the signal is

transmitting from.

All right.

Let's see how this changes
with some direction.

We're going to go
counterclockwise.

All right.

Strong, solid line here.

Steady.

So we've got a rising
overall temperature here.

LAUREN HOHNBAUM: Whoa.

This keeps going up.

Yeah, look at that.
Look at that.

Whoa.

Wow.

Whoa!

What was that?

That's crazy, man.

All right.

Let's see how this changes
with some direction.

We're going to go
counterclockwise.

All right.

NARRATOR: Andy and Paul are
on Thomas Mountain in Anza,

where they've detected
an anomalous radio

frequency at 1.56 gigahertz.

While attempting to
pinpoint the signal using

a directional antenna,
they've captured

a completely different anomaly
on their FLIR thermal camera.

So we've got a rising
overall temperature here.

Look at that.

Whoa.

Wow.

It keeps going up.

Whoa!
LAUREN HOHNBAUM: What was that?

Did you see that?

PAUL BEBAN: Whoa.

ANDREW BUSTAMANTE: Wow.

LAUREN HOHNBAUM: That's
Thomas Mountain for you.

Everything dropped
about 4 degrees.

LAUREN HOHNBAUM: It went from

And we're already
back to 69 degrees.

So... so something rapidly
cool the environment.

And then the ambient air
came back in and brought

the temperature back up again.

So I want to make sure that
we finish the full sweep.

So can you finish the
full sweep, if you don't

mind keeping an eye on this?

Thank you very much.

She's been watching
that like a hawk.

Gotta brought in my attention.

All right, let's take a look.

I'll go clockwise this time.

Come back around.

NARRATOR: As the team rotates
the directional antenna

to try to locate the source
of the 1.56 gigahertz signal...

ANDREW BUSTAMANTE: It's
strong this whole time.

PAUL BEBAN: Yeah, it's
not changing at all.

NARRATOR: they're
discovering that the signal

is the same in every direction
the antenna points toward.

I would expect it
to drop off by now.

We have something
completely consistent.

Wow.

You've gone almost 2/3 of
the way through a circle.

It hasn't changed.

This thing is holding steady.

That's as consistent and
stable as we've seen.

Whatever frequencies
we're coming

across are strong and stable.

OK.

So how can a signal be
all around us like that?

How can a signal
be all around us?

Yeah.

I mean, we'd have to be sitting
on top of the origin point.

Or the receiver.

Right.

Or the receiver.

Yeah.

We are either on the point
that is creating this frequency

or we are on the point that
is receiving this frequency.

Yeah.

But why is it here?

This is the heart of whatever's
going on in the area.

The radio energy here on Thomas
Mountain is off the charts.

We're seeing it happen
from all around us.

So this area is either a
transmitter or a receiver

of some sort of
strange signal that's

reaching to and from space.

There it is.

There it is.

There it is again.

Wow.

And the temperature dropped
again once it flashed.

We just had a second flash that

occurred almost exactly like
the first flash earlier today.

So we for sure are
going to want to review

both of those
instances to see how

they're similar to each other.

All right.

So I think our first
recorded flash happened

right around 46 minutes.

This is real time.

That was it.
LAUREN HOHNBAUM: That's Goldie.

ROLAND VELLANOWETH: Well, you're
definitely in the sweet spot

where Goldie usually comes up.

ANDREW BUSTAMANTE:
There it is right there.

PAUL BEBAN: Yep.

- Yeah, just the mountain.
- Right.

Yeah.

You would expect the whole
screen to have a flash.

ANDREW BUSTAMANTE: Right.
- It's only on the mountain.

Yeah.

There is some sort of
surge of energy here.

The first thing to ask
is whether it's thermal,

but we don't know for sure.

It's really bizarre.

So this was our first instance.

Let's take a look
at our second one.

LAUREN HOHNBAUM: There it goes.
ANDREW BUSTAMANTE: Once again.

ROLAND VELLANOWETH: Once
again, right at the flash.

LAUREN HOHNBAUM:
Just the mountain.

Yeah, just the mountain.

And it's repeatable.

I don't get it, man.

We're not provoking anything.

We're not triggering something.

We're not sending
anything out there.

We're just passively observing.

And here's the thing.

We use these everywhere,
and we've never

seen this effect anyplace else.

This is unique.

ROLAND VELLANOWETH:
Never a flash like this?

- Not like this.
- Really?

PAUL BEBAN: Nothing like this.

We may have captured the Goldie

phenomenon at Thomas Mountain.

Right.

I mean, we have multiple
really interesting,

demonstrable data-driven
anomalies that we've seen

now here at Thomas Mountain.

And our investigation kicked
off with an uninvited guest

flying overhead...
directly overhead.

Right.

In a helicopter
that's registered

to a retired passenger
aircraft's number.

I mean, that was just...

Weird.

Wild.

There's so many things that
we have seen here today

that we have never seen on any
of our other investigations.

This place is completely unique.

Thanks for proving
that we're not

crazy up here on this mountain.

It was well worth it.

Yeah.

I know you have a group
of 400-some people.

Yes.

What they're seeing is real.

You know, when I first moved
here some many years ago,

just a few years
after I got here,

I read an article that
said that this area

here, much to my
surprise, was the number

four UFO hotspot in the nation.

And I guess it's proven itself
at least worthy of the title.

I think you might
be climbing the chart.

- Yeah.
- Climbing the chart.

After this?

Absolutely.

Well, guys, the last
time we were at this table,

you told us about a place with a
strange name and a strange story

to tell.

I'm interested in what happened.

That's a great way to put it.

We brought back some... some
pretty fascinating stuff,

I think.
- Yeah, absolutely.

So we started this investigation
by going right to ground zero,

Clark Dry Lake bed,
an area that SETI

had invested in in the past.

The Search for
Extraterrestrial Intelligence.

And that... that was
actually where we found out

the original documentarians,
Dave and Derek, had their sight

and that they
documented on camera.

And I actually have that
teed up for you here.

Oh, OK.

There's no
infrastructure back there.

And this was a unique sighting
for these two gentlemen in all

of their research in the area.

Is this some kind of
natural optical phenomenon

or is this actually something?

You know, you mentioned
the UAP activity.

They can't explain it.

And it fits into a larger
profile of strange sightings

in the area.

So we went right into
Clark Dry Lake bed,

and that's where we invited
Dave Mason to come out.

We set up all of our passive
collection equipment.

The next day, Dave came
with a full analysis

of what he captured on
the differential flares.

We have these stringed
objects coming through.

This was not detected on
the conventional FLIR,

just on the differential flare.

What are we seeing there?

Exactly.

You know how these things work.

Yes.

A differential FLIR.

That thing, it's really
good at detecting very, very

small changes in temperature.

That means they're
leaving a heat

signature that is inconsistent.

It is a changing heat signature,
which is the only reason

this camera picks it up.

And I wish that I had
any kind of explanation

for what would cause
two parallel masses

in the sky being detected
by a differential FLIR.

ERIK BARD: What
are we seeing here?

I mean, it looks like the...

They're in tandem
with each other.

The relationship between
these things is fixed.

Well, as in the video that
Derek and Dave showed you,

right?

Because that had a row of
lights with a row of lights.

And they were connected,
it looked like.

Good point.

And you would have mentioned it
by now if you heard the sound

of a pair of jets moving over.

ANDREW BUSTAMANTE: Yeah.

Right, right, right.

You know this isn't airplanes.

What is it?

Where is it coming from?

Why are there two little spots
in the clouds that's warmer

than the rest of the spots?

It doesn't... it doesn't
really make any sense.

I have no explanation for it.

And this is our first
round of experimentation.

So there's more?

Right.

Our next step was
we wanted to explore

the Anza part to see more
about that Goldie phenomenon.

We kind of honed in
on an area in Anza

known as Thomas Mountain.

And as soon as we were
setting up to start

our daytime investigation...

that looks like a
privately-owned helicopter,

but it's all blacked out.

So check this out.

It's a recycled tail number.

Well, who was this?

Right.

We had just gotten started.

OK, this looks like
a private helicopter.

It does look like
a private helicopter.

So we were able to confirm
that it had no visible markings

from the ground and it
was quite low level,

but it did have a
transponder code.

So we tracked the
transponder code.

And what we found is that the
tail number on the aircraft

matched a dispositioned
retired fixed-wing aircraft

that had been demolished.

That's weird.

That is weird.
- Yeah.

Yeah, you're talking about
aircraft identity theft there.

When... when you
steal a car, right?

Or if you're gonna drive a
stolen car for a getaway job,

right?

Don't you change
the license plate...

Change those plates.

So you don't know
what kind of car it is?

So where did it come from?

Yeah.

And then where did it go?

Yeah.

Are you guys being
observed or could

it have been something else?

Right.

So how would somebody know
that you guys were coming,

going to be there, and...

and... and know
when you were going

to be there doing your thing
to fly over and collect data?

We have had to ask
ourselves this very question

on several occasions
before, one in particular.

I know what you're thinking.

Yes, because we've had
them show up within minutes...

ERIK BARD: Yes.
- Of doing an experiment.

Hear that?

What the hell?

Helicopter.

There is a helicopter.

Is it turning?

And... and how would
they know we were

even doing it is the question.

Right.

And otherwise, nondescript
helicopter with what?

Should have been a
retired ID number showing

up in the sky over you, guys.

That makes me wonder if you guys

are being followed,
watched, observed,

or if that was coincidence.

It's hard to say,
but we should start

paying more attention to that.

Yeah.

I wanna show you what happened
here on our thermal camera

during our investigation
at Thomas Mountain.

A few interesting
things here that I

want to call your attention to.

First, the temperature right
now, as you see on the thermal,

right... this is
paused, 66.7 degrees.

And that's right on
the target there, yeah?

- Correct.
- OK.

And then as I move
forward frame by frame,

we have an instantaneous
moment where we see this...

Saturation, sort of
what it looks like.

But only on the mountain.

It's not a full frame reset.

It's not a sensor reset.

And where I would expect
a thermal flash to increase

the temperature, we get a drop.

This... this makes
no sense to me at all.

As we continue to watch what
was happening in this direction,

we saw a second
event very similar

just a few minutes later.

What?

You can see.

Once again, whatever happened
happened on the mountain itself.

It took the temperature
from 63 to 60 degrees.

But you didn't see anything,
didn't detect anything

on any other instruments.

This is the same flare camera
you've used now for two years.

Yep.

It's been functioning ever
since and up until that.

So that's the interesting thing
is we haven't seen this before.

Why there?

It seems to be centered
only on the mountain.

It's as if you've
got a thermal flash

taking place on the mountain
or from the mountain.

It's conforming to the... to the
geometry of the mountain itself.

It's not the full frame.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Almost like there was
an energy build up,

and this is the release of it...
ERIK BARD: Yeah.

Coming off the
mountain or something.

We could... we could
actually estimate

how much energy it
would take to saturate

that camera from that far away.
ERIK BARD: Yeah.

And that's a lot
of light, actually.

That would be like, man...

I mean, that would be
like you had a rocket

going off above it right there.

And that's the infrared
off the exhaust plume.

Right?

And you certainly would
have heard or seen a rocket.

Needless to say.

And what's interesting about
it is this is... you know,

this is daylight, which
corresponds with, you know,

people who've seen this Goldie
phenomenon in the daylight.

It may be that there are other
effects that are associated

with it that are not visible.

Maybe this is one of them.

Roland and his daughter,
when they saw this

occur on our thermal
device in real time...

SPEAKER: Yeah.

They were certain that
we had just captured

the first evidence of Goldie.

So let's just go down
that path a little bit.

Let's say it's there
on the mountain.

Or could it have
been above in the sky

and that's the reflection of it,
whatever happened in the sky?

So could there potentially
be something up

here, off camera in the sky,
that you guys aren't seeing

that is...

it did something.

It illuminated it for
a fraction of a second

there, eighth of a second.

Given everything
you've seen, it's

not hard to imagine something
in the sky painting the ground

and producing this effect.

But I can tell you this, though.

It's very intriguing
because we've never

seen that specifically before.

So this actually warrants
follow-up, I think.

With this technology
and then some.

Yeah, it sounds
like we've only just

begun to engage this location.

Absolutely.

Good work, guys.

Thank you.

ERIK BARD: You got
my wheels turning.

TRAVIS TAYLOR: Good stuff.
