Looking at the earth always reminds me of cherry pie.

You wouldn't think they have anything in common,

But both the earth and the cherry pie have crusts

That cover a bunch of squishy stuff that's underneath.

The earth's crust is the outside of our planet,

Just like a pie crust is the outside of a pie.

You can eat a pie crust, but you can't eat the earth's crust.

Even though it might seem like the earth

Is one giant piece of solid rock,

That isn't actually the case.

Things aren't as solid as they seem.

Making a cherry pie can help us understand

The parts of the earth.

On the inside, underneath the crust,

Is a layer of rock that's so hot that it's kind of squishy.

We call this the "mantle."

I'm gonna use some of this cherry filling

To represent the mantle.

And at the very center of the earth,

At its core, is rock that's so hot, it's liquid-y,

Just like chocolate sauce.

The earth's crust isn't one big, solid piece of rock.

It's actually made up of multiple pieces,

Just like this pie crust.

We call these pieces "plates."

When the edges of the plates bump into each other,

They can form mountains or cause earthquakes.

To stop playing with your food,
