the Sun and the Moon in the sky at the same time!

- You know, I'm beginning to wonder if this really is a game.

- You're right. Sean just doesn't

want to go to Neptune.

- Of course Sean wants to go.

He loves Neptune.

Okay, the real real reason I don't want to go to Neptune is

this Commander Cressida comic,

the one I borrowed from you, Sydney.

It--it really scared me.

- Ohh, "High Noon on Neptune."

Sean, you know those comics are just stories.

- I know, but sometimes when I read something really good

with cool pictures, well, it feels really real,

like in this comic.

- I understand, Sean.

That is a good comic.

It's a really scary story.

- Yeah, I was embarrassed to tell you guys the reason

I didn't want to go to Neptune. Very embarrassed.

- Aw, Sean, we're friends.

You don't ever have to be embarrassed to tell us anything.

- Embarrassed means to feel bad about yourself.

It's how hard it is to get something to move.

Hi, I'm astronomer Amy Mainzer, and I'm here with Captain Perez

from the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

We're here at their training facility today,

and we're gonna demonstrate force.

Captain Perez, how do we get the water

out of this fire truck?

- Well, actually, at home, if you had a kitchen sink

or your bathroom sink, and you turn it on...

- Yeah, uh-huh. - It's the same thing

in the fire engine.

- But I bet it's a lot more force

coming out of that truck, right?

- A lot more force.

- Do you think we could try an experiment?

- Sure. - I wonder if we could get

the fire hose to move a wagon.

- So, the force of the water is gonna push in one direction...

I just have so many badges, I had to move them from my room

to the garage.

you get one every year? - Yep.

- But there's gotta be like badges here.

'Cause that's how old I am on Bortron .

- That's right.

But on Earth, I'm the same age as you guys.

- That's so cool.

- But my Bortron age is nothing compared to Sunspot's.

You're just in time for the big news.

Jet is years old on Bortron ,

and Sunspot is .

- But 's my abuelo's age.

That means "grandpa" in Spanish.

And Jet does not look like Grandpa.

- I know it's hard to believe, Mindy, but allow me to explain.

- A year is the length of time it take a planet to orbit,

or go around, the Sun.

Earth's orbit is days.

Planets that are closer to the Sun orbit faster.

Planets that are farther away take longer

to go around the Sun.

Mercury goes around the Sun the fastest,

and Neptune takes the longest.

Bortron has gone around its sun times

since Jet was born.

That's why jet is on his home planet.

- How old would I be on another planet?

- Hmm, according to my calculations,

you'd be almost on Mercury.

- ? That's old enough

to fly to space!

[both laughing]

- There's one more fact you need to know.

It was one Earth year ago today that Jet and his parents

landed here in Boxwood Terrace.

- Well, I better get back to sorting my badges.

You guys want to help?

- Hmm, badge number .

Wonder what it does.

- No, Sean, wait!

[flatulence]

- Ugh. - Pyew!

Skunk smell, but don't worry. It's harmless.

but have you ever wondered why you can only have

a birthday once a year? Hi, I'm astronomer Amy Mainzer.

The reason we only have birthdays once a year

is because that's how long it takes for the Earth

to go around the Sun.

We call the motion of a planet around its sun its orbit.

The length of a planet's year is determined by how fast

it goes around the Sun.

And that depends on how close it is to the Sun.

Planets that are close to the Sun take less time

to go around than planets that are really far away.

For example, it only takes Mercury days

to go around the Sun.

That's because Mercury's a lot closer to the Sun

than the Earth is.

If you were on Mercury, you'd have a birthday

every three months.

But, if I were on Neptune, it takes Earth years

just to complete one orbit around the Sun.

That's because Neptune is so incredibly far away.

That means that even the oldest person on Earth

is not even one Neptune year old.

The Earth is traveling around the Sun

incredibly fast in its orbit.

It's going , miles an hour.

And at that incredible speed, it takes the Earth months,

or about days, to go around the Sun one time.

And one day, if you go to live on Mars,

its orbit is almost twice as long as Earth's,

so you would only have half as many birthdays on Mars.

So the next time you need a reason to have a party,

just tell everybody you're celebrating

your Mercury birthday, and you need to have a party

every three months.
