01x03 - The Case of the Missing Feedback/The Case of the Commitments Crunch/The Case of the Chilly Crowd

Post by bunniefuu »

Did a word that's important to you go missing?

And now all you can feel, do, or think

is the opposite of that word?

Then call us!

-I'm Sly. -And I'm Gabby.

We're Word Detectives, and we solve...

[both] Word Mysteries!

Together, we run the Wordsville Online Detective Agency.

We'll find your missing word, fast.

-Not to mention, briskly. -And swiftly.

Yeah, we're really good with words.

[kids] Wordsville!

♪ Waah! ♪

Baker Graham's newest tart. This is gonna be amazing.

Ready to try it, Gabby?

[both] Three, two, one.

-Um... what? -Uh... oh.

Lemon and chocolate?

I know what I think about this tart,

so why can't I say it?

I also have thoughts that I can't say out loud.

-Weird. Is this a... -[ringing]

Word Mystery? I think so.

Word Detectives, what do you think of this new sign

for my vet clinic?

-Um... huh. -Uh...

Not you, too. Ugh!

Every time I ask someone what they think of my new sign,

I get the same confused answers.

How long has this been happening?

Ever since my feedback box went missing.

See?

[Sly] So the word "feedback" is missing.

Is this why we can't say what we think

about Baker Graham's new tart?

It must be.

Feedback can be things you like or don't like.

That's why I made my feedback box,

to get helpful ideas on how

to make my vet clinic sign better.

We'll solve this Word Mystery.

Tell us what happened, and Sly will animate it.

[Sly] Recap time!

[Vet Wilder] I'd just finished doing an interview

for Reporter Read about Sully, my new rescue skunk,

when Baker Graham dropped off a few tarts for us to try.

Before we tried the tarts, I took the chance

to ask for feedback on my new clinic sign.

I gave them pieces of paper to write their opinions,

then grabbed my tart and left the room,

so they could put their honest feedback in the box.

When I came back, both of them, and my feedback box,

-were gone! -Thanks, Vet Wilder.

Now, can you show us the scene of the mystery, please?

The feedback box was right over here.

[Sly] I'll take a screenshot.

Vet Wilder, we'll solve this case,

so you sign will get the feedback it deserves.

-Bye. -Case notes time.

[Gabby] What happened is someone took Vet Wilder's feedback box,

and now we can't say what we like or don't like

about anything.

[Sly] And we know where it happened,

at Vet Wilder's clinic.

And it happened when he left the room.

And our suspects are Reporter Read, and Baker Graham.

Now we have to figure out who did it, how, and why.

Let's look at the clues.

[Gabby] There's a tart with a bite taken out of it.

[Sly] And a blank feedback paper,

with a chocolate thumbprint on it.

Hmm, since Baker Graham made the tarts,

let's interview him first.

[ringing]

Word Detectives, I'm whipping up some of my new tart.

The choco-lemon extravaganza.

People say they're indescribable.

Yeah, that's the only way to put it.

We can't describe what we like or don't like about your tarts,

because the word "feedback" is missing.

Oh? That's too bad.

Huh, we saw a paper at the vet clinic

with the same chocolate thumbprint on it as your apron.

Oh, that's because Vet Wilder gave me this piece of paper

to write my feedback.

But I didn't want to write any criticism.

-What's criticism? -The same thing as feedback.

What you say when you don't like something.

Feedback can be what you do like about something, too,

Baker Graham.

I'm not sure that's true.

Besides, hearing what people don't like

can hurt someone's feelings.

It shouldn't hurt anyone's feelings

-if it's constructive criticism. -What's that?

That's when you nicely explain why you don't like something

to help make it better.

It still sounds hurtful to me,

but if you'll excuse me, Word Detectives,

I have more tarts to make.

The tart! Baker Graham, at the vet clinic,

we saw a tart with one bite taken, and--

I make tarts. I don't make people eat them.

He seemed super sour.

Do you think he ate too many lemons?

Maybe. Baker Graham doesn't think feedback can be positive.

And he doesn't like any kind of criticism.

I hope he can handle my feedback

when we finally solve this case.

Let's call Reporter Read.

[ringing]

Hi, Word Detectives.

What do you think of this headline?

"Skunks Smell."

-Hmm-mm... -Huh? What?

I had a feeling that's what you would say.

I'm writing a report on Vet Wilder's rescue skunk.

And I know something's wrong with the headline,

but I don't know what.

That's probably because the word "feedback" is missing.

Well, that makes sense.

I need feedback on what I write in my reports,

to make sure they're clear, fair, and honest.

But sometimes when I give people my feedback,

I can be too honest, and hurt their feelings.

That can be a problem with feedback.

Which reminds me, we found a tart

with one bite out of it at the vet clinic,

-is it yours? -Yes.

I have a one-bite rule.

It means, I'll try a bite of anything.

If I like it, I'll have more.

If I don't like it, I'll stop.

What happened after your one bite?

I stopped. And it really hurt Baker Graham's feelings.

He didn't even give me a chance to say anything.

After I upset him,

I didn't want to risk upsetting Vet Wilder

with my feedback on his sign.

I should finish my report.

Talk later.

We should take another look at our case notes.

What did we learn?

[Gabby] That Baker Graham doesn't like feedback.

[Sly] And Reporter Read needs feedback.

[Gabby] But she didn't want to upset Vet Wilder

after she upset Baker Graham.

Wait, Reporter Read didn't say anything about the tart.

You're right, she just stopped eating it.

But Baker Graham still got hurt.

Taking the word "feedback" wouldn't change that.

Which means, only person could have committed

this Word Mystery.

Let's show them who, how, and why.

[ringing]

Now presenting, the Word Mystery animated re-enactment of...

[Sly's voice] Here, have a taste of my new tart.

[Gabby's voice] Sure, I'll try one bite.

But I'll eat more only if I like it.

[Sly's voice] I'll try, too.

But only if you give me your feedback on my new sign.

I'll give you two space,

so you can give your honest feedback.

You had only one bite!

It's obvious you don't like it.

[Gabby's voice] Can I tell you what I think?

[Sly's voice] No! You hurt my feelings.

I don't like criticism. You should go.

And so should this feedback box.

Baker Graham is who did it.

-[gasps] -Baker Graham, how could you?

When everyone left the room, he grabbed the feedback box.

That's how.

He thinks feedback is always negative.

And he was hurt Reporter Read only ate one bite

of his new tart.

Reporter Read made me feel like I did a bad job.

Which is how I always feel when I get criticism.

So I took Vet Wilder's feedback box.

And that's why I did it.

But feedback can be helpful.

Why don't you return my feedback box, and we'll show you?

Fine.

[ringing]

Feedback has been returned.

Baker Graham, your tarts have a tasty crust,

but they're a bit sour.

That's how I felt, too, but I didn't get a chance to say it.

Oh, hearing that feedback wasn't so bad.

Now I know what to fix.

I get it now.

I'm sorry for taking the feedback box.

It's okay.

I'm glad you see how helpful feedback

and constructive criticism can be.

Now, back to my new sign.

Thoughts, feelings, ideas?

-Why is the puppy a pirate? -Can it be a kitten?

It should be a snake!

No, wait, a basket of kittens. All the kittens!

-And can it be jumping? -I really like horses.

Well, you did ask for feedback.

-True. -Thanks, Word Detectives.

Oh! What about a pig?

I still think I like the snake.

Ready, Gabby? You said we could watch my favourite movie today.

Dog Detectives Three: Begging for the Truth.

I did say that, but, well, I don't think I will anymore.

Huh. Maybe I won't either.

It's Athlete Glory.

Do you think she needs a Word Mystery solved?

Probably. But, do we have to?

I don't wanna solve any Word Mysteries today.

[Gabby] Neither do I!

[sighs] But that's not like us, Sly.

We made a promise to the town of Wordsville

that we'd find their missing words fast.

Yeah. Not to mention briskly, and swiftly.

[sighs] She's gonna keep calling.

Word Detectives! I was starting to think you'd never answer.

But I'm so glad you did.

My day planner has disappeared. This one!

[Gabby] Your day planner says "commitments"?

A commitment is like a promise you've made

or a responsibility you have.

Exactly! Right now I'm supposed to be leading a yoga class,

but I can't follow through on any of my promises.

That's because with the word "commitments" gone,

no one can make or keep any promises.

Yeah, we're all ignoring our responsibilities.

Sly, that's why we don't wanna find any missing words today!

But you'll find the word "commitments" for me, right?

Maybe.

Or maybe we'll play video games instead.

Wait, we can't play video games.

Our controllers are still broken.

Oh, yeah. [gasps]

Scientist Cosmo said he'd fix them today!

He also said he would invent a fast-drying towel for me.

I get so sweaty when I work out.

Hmm. If we solve this case,

I bet Scientist Cosmo will keep his commitments.

That means he'll fix our controllers.

And invent my towel. Did I mention how sweaty I get?

You sure did. Okay, tell us everything,

-and Sly will animate it. -[Sly] Recap time!

[Glory]So, Scientist Cosmo and Artist Clay

were at the Gym doing our weekly Wordsville workout.

I was surprised, because they haven't been very committed

to coming every week.

After our workout, I was sweaty, naturally,

so I went to get changed.

But when I got back, they were both gone,

and so was my day planner!

Here's where's I left my day planner.

Aren't you gonna take a screenshot for your Case Notes?

Yeah, sure, sure.

But I can't commit to doing anything with it.

You are gonna solve my case, right?

-We'll see. -No promises.

Gabby, we could try to solve this case,

or we could sing some karaoke!

Yes-- No!

Sly, I think we need to watch this.

Together, we run the Wordsville Online Detective Agency.

We'll find your missing word, fast.

Oh, forget it. I don't wanna sing anymore.

I can't commit to anything.

Push through it!

We know what happened.

Athlete Glory's "commitment" day planner is gone.

Now nobody is doing what they promised to do.

Where it happened is the Gym, and it happened when

Athlete Glory changed clothes after her workout.

[Sly] Scientist Cosmo and Artist Clay are the suspects.

Who did it, how, and why is another story.

[Gabby] For clues, there's some clay,

and a piece of paper with a list of names.

Some are crossed out!

I'm clueless on these clues.

Let's see what Scientist Cosmo tells us.

Scientist Cosmo? You seem different.

I am. I've pretty much given up on

all my experiments and inventions,

and I'm not doing anything I promised to do for myself,

or anyone else.

Like fix our game controllers?

Or invent Athlete Glory a fast-drying towel?

Right, and that's not all. I had made so many commitments

to do stuff for other people that I had to make a list

of all the people that I had promised to help out.

A list of names? Like the one that was left in the Gym?

Oh, yes. I must have left it there by accident.

I've just been so overwhelmed.

But I haven't had time to work on my own inventions,

or even make my workouts with Athlete Glory.

-That must have been hard. -It was.

But now I'm not doing any of it.

Well, off to do nothing. Or something.

Not anything I promised to do.

See ya.

Hmm. He said he was overwhelmed

by all of his commitments.

Like the one he made to us.

But now he seems super relaxed.

Let's call Artist Clay next.

Is that a sculpture, Artist Clay?

It's supposed to be a fire truck sculpture

that I promised to make for Firefighter Ember.

But I can't seem to finish it.

A lot of that going around today.

Tell us why you were at the Gym today.

Athlete Glory is helping me get fit.

It takes lots of energy to make sculptures. [grunts] See?

But even though it's usually easy for me to

commit to making art every day,

it's harder for me to commit to working out once a week.

And how do you feel about that?

Terrible. I don't like when I don't keep my commitments.

But I did work out today, so that's something.

I should go wash my hands

if I'm not gonna finish this sculpture.

Bye!

-Did he take the day planner? -As Word Detectives,

we're committed to answer that question.

Or we could make music!

-[tambourine rattling] -[drum thudding]

[groans] We've got to fight it!

Case Notes time.

[Sly] Artist Clay feels guilty for not being committed.

[Gabby] Maybe he took the word so he wouldn't feel bad?

[Sly] And Scientist Cosmo had too many commitments.

Maybe he took the word so he didn't have to do

everything he promised to do.

[Sly] The clay matches Artist Clay's sculpture.

[Gabby] And Scientist Cosmo left the list of people

-he was committed to helping. -But wait!

Why would he leave the list at the Gym

if he was planning to keep all his commitments?

I think we just cracked it.

Will you animate a reenactment?

Part of me wants to say, "Meh."

But it is my favourite part, so, yes!

Now presenting the Word Mystery Animated Reenactment of...

[Gabby]"Phew! I'm glad you came.

That was a great workout. I'm so sweaty!

[Gabby]"I keep all my commitments in my day planner.

I better go get changed and ready for my next one.

Hope to see you both next week."

[Sly]"Thanks, Athlete Glory.

I'll try to stay committed to our workouts."

"How does Athlete Glory keep all her commitments?

Hmm. Maybe we could both use a break."

Scientist Cosmo is who did it.

-[gasps] -How could you?

What happened to not committing to things?

He did it when he was alone in the Gym.

He just grabbed the planner and left. That's how he did it.

Artist Clay wanted to keep his commitments.

But Scientist Cosmo wanted a break from his.

That's why he did it.

Okay, yes. I did it.

I took the day planner.

I was just so overwhelmed by everything I committed to

and wanted a break.

I'm sorry I made it so that no one

could keep their commitments.

I'll bring back your day planner now.

It's so good to have the word "Commitments" back.

And to have Wordsville back to normal.

Scientist Cosmo, we're sorry if we made you feel overwhelmed.

We know you can't take on everything.

And don't worry, we figured out how to fix our controllers.

Another Word Mystery solved!

Is it time to watch Dog Detective Part Three?

Absolutely! I keep all my commitments.

Let's watch.

Gabby, do you know what time it is?

Time for Vet Wilder's summer potluck picnic!

I am so ready.

It's a perfect day.

The sun is out, the birds are...

Brr! Why am I feeling cold all of a sudden?

I feel it, too.

Sly? It just started snowing outside my window.

Snow? In summer?

It makes no sense.

[Gabby] Hey, it's Baker Graham calling.

I have a feeling this is a Word Mystery.

A very cold one.

Word Detectives, my sign is gone!

This one.

[Sly] Why does your sign say "scorching"?

I use it to warn people

when hot baked goods come out of the oven.

Also, I realize you're not weather detectives,

but why is it snowing?

I have a hunch why. "Scorching" doesn't mean "hot."

It means "extremely hot."

And without the word "scorching,"

Wordsville has turned extremely cold, frigid, and frozen.

It's definitely a Word Mystery.

Tell us everything that happened.

And I'll animate it. And try to stay warm.

R-r-r-recap time.

[Graham]I had just put my sign next to

the scorching apple pie I baked

for Vet Wilder's summer potluck picnic.

That's when Firefighter Ember came by to give me a ride,

but I wasn't ready, because the pie tin

was way too hot to carry.

Then Vet Wilder showed up asking if we were ready to go.

He doesn't like when people are late.

They were both impatient, so I went to look for a bag

that can safely carry the scorching pie tin.

When I came back, they were gone,

and so was my sign!

Baker Graham, can you show us the scene of the mystery?

Of course. Here's where I last saw my "scorching" sign.

[Sly] I'm saving this screenshot for our Case Notes.

[Graham] And I'm gonna go grab a scarf.

[Sly] Good idea.

-We're on it. -Bye!

Time to start our Case Notes.

But first, warmer clothes.

[Gabby] Hurry, Sly.

[Sly] I'm coming. Be right there.

-Ahh! -Much better.

Now, back to business.

[Sly] We know what happened.

Someone took Baker Graham's "scorching" sign.

And now the town of Wordsville is the opposite of scorching.

The Bakery is where it happened.

When Baker Graham went to find his bag

to carry the scorching hot pie.

So he could take the pie to the potluck picnic

with Firefighter Ember and Vet Wilder.

[Gabby] They're our suspects.

But we have to figure out who did it, how, and why.

Let's look at the clues.

[Gabby] A beach ball, and...

those look like Firefighter Ember's safety goggles.

Let's call her.

[Ember shivers] Word Detectives!

Judging by your winter outfits,

-it's cold there, too. -Freezing.

It's because Baker Graham's "scorching" sign is missing.

He told us you were at the Bakery earlier to pick him up.

-And that you were impatient. -Well, a bit.

But only because I wanted to get to the picnic

before a fire emergency called me away.

Does that happen a lot?

Yes! I always end up having to leave early.

I like helping people, but it's still hard to miss out.

Like that time when I missed Singer Melody's sing-a-thon.

Or Athlete Glory's marathon-a-thon.

Did you see the "scorching" sign?

I did. Baker Graham didn't want me to burn my hand

on the scorching hot apple pie tin.

That's when Vet Wilder arrived, asking if we were ready to go.

Next thing I knew, Baker Graham ran to the back,

and I didn't want to upset Vet Wilder by being late,

so I decided to go.

Hmm. Did you leave anything behind?

Mmm, nothing I would need. Talk later.

Hmm. Firefighter Ember didn't wanna get called away

from the potluck picnic.

So did she take the sign on her way out,

or was it Vet Wilder?

Let's give him a call.

Hello, Word Detectives.

Vet Wilder, are you knitting?

Yes. The animals in my clinic are cold,

so I'm knitting tiny sweaters.

This one's for Sammy the snake.

We heard you were being impatient at the bakery.

Can you blame me? I didn't want anyone to be late

to my summer potluck picnic.

I was ready to play beach ball volleyball.

I love that game.

Me too. Not that it matters.

I left my beach ball somewhere.

Plus, it got so cold out that I had to postpone my picnic.

And did you happen to see Baker Graham's "scorching" sign?

Yes, right next to the hot apple pie.

Baker Graham said it wasn't just hot, it was blistering hot.

Before I knew it, Baker Graham went to the back

to go look for something, and that's when I left.

How come?

I couldn't be late to my own picnic.

Anyhow, I should really finish knitting this sweater.

Sammy's a very long snake.

So we know Vet Wilder saw the sign,

and he left because Baker Graham wasn't ready to go.

Did he take the "scorching" sign to cool the pie

and hurry everyone up?

Maybe. Let's go over the Case Notes.

Both our suspects had a reason to take the "scorching" sign.

Firefighter Ember could have taken the sign

to make the pie cool down more quickly.

That way she could go to the picnic

before a fire emergency called her away.

But Vet Wilder could have taken it, too.

True. He didn't want Baker Graham to be late

to his potluck picnic.

We should look at the clues again.

[Gabby] The beach ball is probably Vet Wilder's.

He said he doesn't know where he left his.

[Sly] And Firefighter Ember left her safety goggles behind.

She also said she didn't leave anything behind she would need.

And she wouldn't need her goggles

if there were no fire emergencies.

We just solved it, Sly!

It's time to reveal who did it, how, and why.

Now presenting the Word Mystery Animated Reenactment of...

"The Case of the Chilly Crowd."

"Baker Graham! We need to get to

the summer potluck picnic right away!"

[Gabby] "Sorry, but we have to wait

for this scorching hot apple pie to cool."

[Sly]"My summer potluck picnic is about to start!

You can't be late."

[Gabby] "Let me see what I can do."

[Sly]"I can't ask people not to be late

and be late myself! I need to go."

"If Baker Graham doesn't hurry,

I'll probably miss the picnic too.

Unless..."

Firefighter Ember is who did it.

She grabbed the sign when she was alone in the bakery.

-That's how she did it. -But why?

I really wanted to go to the picnic,

and I thought if I took the word "scorching,"

I could cool down the pie and avoid getting called

on a scorching hot fire emergency.

That does happen a lot. We're very thankful

for firefighters like you.

But I ruined your picnic by making it freezing cold.

And even though fire is bad when it gets out of control,

we need it for cooking and cozy camp-outs.

So, I'm returning the sign,

even if it means I can't stay at the picnic.

I have an idea that might help.

Thanks for returning my "scorching" sign.

I'm sorry you get called away

from fun events, Firefighter Ember.

And that brings me to my idea.

My potluck picnic is now an all-day event,

so drop in whenever you like.

It doesn't matter if you're late or if you get called away early.

The important thing is that everyone gets a chance to come.

That's perfect!

I'll get to party and do my firefighter duty.

[all] Thanks, Word Detectives!

The Case of the Chilly Crowd is officially closed.

Picnic time!

Whoo!
