OLIVE: [sigh] What a beautiful morning, and we have the whole day to do whatever we want!
ARI: I know, right? We can do anything!
So, what do you want to do?
OLIVE: I don't know. Maybe a picnic?
ARI: [gasp] I was thinking the exact same thing!
[giggles]
ELINOR: And look! Over here!
This is the perfect place for our picnic!
OLIVE: Wow, I love this spot.
ARI: Look at all these trees!
ELINOR: It's so cozy. It's like we're in a fort!
ARI: Yeah.
OLIVE: Cool.
ARI: Okay, picnic time!
OLIVE: Uh-oh! The blanket.
ARI: Don't worry Olive, I'll get it.
OLIVE: Thanks, Ari.
ARI: You are welcome!
KIDS: [giggle]
OLIVE: I brought some orange juice.
ARI: I brought granola. I made it myself.
ELINOR: And I brought... Uh-oh!
ARI: Uh-oh? What's that? A new kind of snack I hope!
OLIVE: I think she means uh-oh, like oh, no! What's wrong, Elinor?
ELINOR: Um. I made three sandwiches, one for each of us.
ARI: Oh, are they peanut butter and pickle?
Please be peanut butter and pickle.
ELINOR: They were peanut butter and pickle.
ARI: Yes!
ELINOR: But I left them on the counter in my kitchen.
ARI: No!
ELINOR: It's okay, Ari. I'll just hop home and get them. I'll be right back.
OLIVE: Bye, Elinor.
ARI: Hurry back!
Maybe we should wait until Elinor gets back before we finish our granola and juice.
OLIVE: Yeah. What do you want to do while we wait?
ARI: I don't know.
Wait a minute, remember when Elinor said she loves this place because it's cozy like a fort?
OLIVE: Yeah.
ARI: Are you thinking what I'm thinking?
OLIVE: I think so!
KIDS: Let's build a real fort!
OLIVE: If we hurry we can finish before Elinor gets back.
ARI: Then we can have our picnic in our fort.
KIDS: And there's the perfect spot!
OLIVE: We can put the main room here, and the reading room here, what do you think, Ari?
Uh, Ari?
ARI: We can put the snack room over here, and the other snack room over here!
And here- a room for extra snacks!
OLIVE: Ari, what are you doing?
The perfect spot is over here, by the big tree!
ARI: Really? I thought you meant over here with all these rocks,
I mean this is the perfectest of all perfect spots.
OLIVE: Really?
ARI: Really!

OLIVE: Well, since you said please. Okay.
ARI: Okay, so first we have to move these rocks.
OLIVE: Rocks? If you says so.
Uh, why are we moving these rocks?
ARI: For the walls, all forts have rock walls. Oops!
OLIVE: Owie! Ari!
ARI: Sorry Olive. I guess they are pretty heavy.
OLIVE: Then I think we should make the walls out of sticks and the floor out of leaves.
ARI: How's that gonna work?
OLIVE: Go and get some sticks and I'll show you.
KIDS: Whoa!
ARI: Olive! You got your leaves all over my sticks!
OLIVE: No... You got your sticks all over my leaves!
ARI: Well, I didn't want to use sticks in the first place. I wanted to use rocks.
OLIVE: Well, I didn't even want to build the fort here.
I wanted to build it over at the tree!
ARI: Well maybe we should just build our own forts!
OLIVE: Well, maybe we should.
KIDS: Hmph!
OLIVE: There. All I need is a roof!
Oh, perfect! I can use the picnic blanket.
[grunting]
Whoa!
Uh-oh!
Ugh.
ARI: I can move these rocks all by myself, no problem-o.
[grunting]
[sigh]
[grunting]
Whoa!
Huh?
Wow.
That's so cool!
OLIVE: What's so cool?
ARI: It looks like ants are telling these little bugs where to go.
OLIVE: Really? Why?
ARI: So they could eat, I think.
The bugs really like those green shoots.
OLIVE: Oh, I read about this in my nature book.
These bugs are called aphids, and the ants are helping them find food.
Hey! It looks like the aphids gave the ants a treat.
ARI: Huh. The ants help the aphids find what to eat,
and the aphids give the ants a treat.
OLIVE: So they're helping each other.
ARI: I guess.
KIDS: Hmph.
OLIVE: So, Ari, how's the fort-building?
ARI: Fine, Olive.
My rocks [grunts] are almost [grunts] where I want them to be.
[grunts]
How's your fort?
OLIVE: Awesome...
I just need to [grunt] make the roof.
Then I'm all done.
ARI: [grunt]
Ouch! [sigh]
OLIVE: Ah!
ARI: Huh?
What is it Olive, is everything okay?
OLIVE: Everything's fine, Ari. I was just surprised. Look at the size of that spider!
ARI: Whoa, I've never seen a spider that big!
[croak]
OLIVE: Ari look! Is that a frog? It's so small.
ARI: And I've never seen a frog that tiny.
Wait! It's hopping near that big spider. Watch out little froggy!
OLIVE: No, look! The spider isn't hurting the frog! It's letting it ride on its back!
ARI: And look, they're sharing a burrow, it's like they live together.
[bird chirp]
OLIVE: I think that bird wanted to eat the frog, but the spider scared it away.
KIDS: That's so interesting!
ARI: Hey what's that?
OLIVE:I think those are spider's eggs in an egg sac.
Uh-oh! And the tiny ants are coming to steal them.
ARI: Look! The frog ate the little ant with its sticky tongue
before they could get to the spider's eggs!
OLIVE: Wow, so the spider keeps the frog safe, and the frog takes care of the spider eggs.
They're helping each other.
ARI: Just like the big ants and the aphids helped each other out.
OLIVE: As Elinor would say, that's so interesting!
It looks like everyone is helping each other.
ARI: Because it makes things easier.
KIDS: Wanna build a fort together?
ARI: Yeah! Let's help each other out.

ELINOR: Hi, I'm back! Sorry I took so long,
My Dad loves peanut butter and pickle sandwiches too so I had to make some more.

OLIVE: It's our fort!
ELINOR: Wow, this is awesome. I love the blanket roof and the rock furniture.
OLIVE: The blanket was my idea, but Ari helped me put it up, because he can fly.
ARI: Mmm-hmm! And Olive helped me move the rocks.
She's pretty strong, you know.
OLIVE: We helped each other out with the things we do best.
ARI: Yeah, we got the idea from a spider and a frog.
OLIVE: And some ants and aphids.
ELINOR: What do you mean?
OLIVE: We'll show you.
OLIVE/ARI: After the picnic.
KIDS: [laugh]
ARI: I'm hungry.
OLIVE: Me too!
Does anyone want some juice?
ELINOR: "“Elinor's Meadow"”
Oh, bug. Buggy-buggy-buggy-bug.
Hi Dad!
MR. RABBIT: Oh, uh, hi Elinor!
ELINOR: [giggle] I didn't mean to surprise you.
MR. RABBIT: That's okay. I need to take a break anyway. Whew!
So what are you doing, hunny bunny?
ELINOR: I'm looking for bugs!
MR. RABBIT: Any luck?
ELINOR: I can't find any in the yard today.
No grasshoppers or bees, butterflies or anything!
Hmm, I wonder why not?
MR. RABBIT: Hmm... not quite sure.
Maybe I can help you look after I'm done mowing the lawn.
I just have a few more spots left to do.
OLIVE: Hey, Elinor!

ELINOR: Hi, Mr. Dog!
MR. DOG: Oh! Hey kids! What are you up to this fine day?
ARI: We're going to play with Olive's new frisbee in the big field.
MR. DOG: Nice! That field right next to the meadow is the perfect place to play.
ELINOR: Meadow? What's a meadow?
MR. DOG: Oh. A meadow is a field that's allowed to grow wild. No one cuts it down.
ELINOR: Oh, that's so interesting!
OLIVE: Meadow! I like that word.
ARI: Would you like to come and play frisbee with us, Mr. Dog?
MR. DOG: I would love to, we dogs love to play with frisbees, but... but...
Oh, ah!
Oh, I have to finish my yard work.
ARI: Oh, okay! See you later.
MR. DOG: Oh, wait!
Maybe just one throw?

[chuckles] I just couldn't help myself.

Oh no! Olive's new frisbee!
OLIVE: Where did it go?
ARI: I can't see it anywhere!
OLIVE: We have to look for it.
ELINOR: Whoa! The grass is so long we can barely see each other.
ARI: Wait a minute.

OLIVE: Here I am! ARI: Ah!
[chuckles] You got me, Olive.
OLIVE: Come on. Let's keep looking.
Ari? I know you're hiding somewhere.
Ari? Ari?
Ah!
[chuckles] Good one, Ari.
ARI: Olive! Huh.
Ah! [chuckles]
OLIVE: [chuckles] ELINOR: Hmm...
Wow. Look at all these plants and flowers!
And so many insects... [insects buzzing]
OLIVE: Elinor, where are you? [crickets chirping]
ELINOR: Over here!
ARI: Whoa, it's so nice and cozy in here, like a little clubhouse.
OLIVE: Look at all the creatures and flowers!
ELINOR: I wish I had a meadow like this in my yard.
Then there'd be lots of bugs there.
OLIVE: Hey, look! My frisbee!
I almost forgot about it.
ARI: Come on everyone!
OLIVE: Oh, I'm so glad I found it. Oh, it's getting a little late.
ARI:I think it's almost dinner time.
[stomach growls]
Yep, it's dinner time.
ELINOR: Maybe we can play tomorrow.
OLIVE: Good idea!
ARI: Bye!
ELINOR: See you later!
MR. RABBIT: Phew!
ELINOR: Hi Dad, did you finish mowing the lawn?
MR. RABBIT: Almost! I just have one patch left.
So how did the frisbee playing go?
ELINOR: It was so fun, but then we lost the frisbee -
and that was even more fun!
MR. RABBIT: More fun?
ELINOR: Yeah! Because when we were looking for it, we found a meadow!
There were butterflies and ladybugs and inchworms and
grasshoppers and clovers and buttercups and daisies and everything!
All living in the tall grass! Do you want to come and see?
MR. RABBIT: I would love to!
ELINOR: Come on!
The meadow is right over there!
See!
MR. RABBIT: Wow, it really is amazing. So many plants and creatures!
ELINOR: I wonder why it's not like this in our yard.
MR. RABBIT: I don't know, what do you think?
ELINOR: Maybe because the bugs like the flowers here?
MR. RABBIT: They sure seem to.
ELINOR: And maybe because the grass is taller in the meadow than in our yard?
MR. RABBIT: I think you're right.
Lots of insects and animals like to live
where the grass is tall and where flowers are growing.
Like that little bug.
ELINOR: [gasp]
A firefly!
Hmm...
Dad, why do we mow the lawn anyway?
MR. RABBIT: So the grass is shorter.
ELINOR: I know, but why?
MR. RABBIT: So it looks nice.
ELINOR: I guess.
MR. RABBIT: Well, short grass is easier to run around and play on.
ELINOR: I guess that makes sense. You can't lose your frisbee in short grass.
MR. RABBIT: Very true.
ELINOR: It would be nice having all those creatures in our yard.
Wait. Dad, do you have to cut all the grass?
MR. RABBIT: What do you mean, hunny bunny?
ELINOR: Maybe you could leave that last patch of grass, so it grows up tall, like the meadow.
MR. RABBIT: Huh. I hadn't thought of that before.
We could even toss in some local wildflower seeds to get different plants growing in it.
ELINOR: That would be awesome!
MR. RABBIT: Let's try it!

MR. RABBIT: Well, now that there's less grass to cut, it's a lot easier to mow the lawn.
RANGER RABBIT: Nice work honey.
MR. RABBIT: I think I like having a meadow in our yard.
RANGER RABBIT: So, where's Elinor?
Elinor?
ELINOR: Here I am!
OLIVE: Me too!
ARI: Me three!
KIDS: [laughs]
RANGER RABBIT: Wow! Look at all the happy native plants and flowers.
That means lots of food for the pollinators.
OLIVE: Like butterflies and bees.
RANGER RABBIT: That's right.
ELINOR: [gasp] Mom! Look!
ARI: A frog! Aw, so sweet.
RANGER RABBIT: All kinds of animals like to live in the tall grass,
especially in the flowers.
ELINOR: Welcome to the meadow, froggy friend.
What's this?
[gasp] Fireflies!
RANGER RABBIT: Look at them all flittering and glittering.
OLIVE: Everyone loves to play in Elinor's meadow.
ARI: It's the friendliest spot in the yard.
