MS. ELEPHANT: Whew! Thanks for helping me, kids.

OLIVE: Of course, Mom!

ELINOR:You're welcome, Ms. Elephant!

ARI: No problem!

MS. ELEPHANT: Now the animal Town Flower Garden is ready for everyone to visit.

ELINOR: So, when does the garden open, Ms. Elephant?

MS. ELEPHANT: Well, right now! Today's the grand opening.

OLIVE: Mmhmm, I even made flyers to tell everyone about it!

I put some on the table out front, but...

so far no one's come around yet.

MR. RACCOON: Hiya kids, I brought you some '‘grand' treats for your grand opening!

OLIVE: Mr. Raccoon!

ELINOR: Hi Mr. Raccoon!

ARI: Mmm, treats.

MR. RACCOON: Just thought a plate of my newest cookies might help to celebrate the new Flower Garden.

OLIVE: Thanks, Mr. Raccoon. Everyone is going to love them.

ELINOR: Mmm.

MR. RACCOON: Speaking of which - where is everyone?

OLIVE: Nobody's here yet...

MR. RACCOON: Well don't worry, once everyone hears that my treats are here, they'll all want to come.

I am the best baker in town, after all.

I'm also the... only baker in town... ahem.

MS. ELEPHANT/MR. RACCOON: [chuckles]

OLIVE: I wish I knew how to get these flyers out to everyone so they would come.

You worked so hard, Mom. You deserve a really GRAND grand opening!

MS. ELEPHANT: I'm just happy to make Animal Town a little more colorful.

Maybe you can give Elinor and Ari a tour of the garden?

ARI: Great idea!

OLIVE: Yeah!

MR. RACCOON: You can help yourself to a cookie on your way!

OLIVE: Thanks for the treats. Let's go!

This flower is called an agapanthus.

Isn't that a fun word to say? Aga-PAN-thus. [giggles]

ELINOR: Aga-PAN-thus!

OLIVE: And these hyacinths smell SO sweet.

KIDS: [sniffs] Mmmm.

OLIVE: But my favorite flowers in the whole garden are the purple violets!

See how they have two different colors of petals?

ARI: Whoa! And their leaves look like tiny-little birdie feet.

ELINOR: And there's even a little orange part in the center that looks like a bird's beak!

KIDS: Tweet! Tweet! Tweet! Tweet! Tweet! Tweet! Tweet!

OLIVE: Aren't they special? My mom and I planted them here months ago!

We picked this place here so that everyone will get to see them...

And I just can't wait!

ELINOR: Huh... Olive, didn't you say that you only planted the violets over here?

OLIVE: Yes! At the very center of the garden!

ARI: Then...what are they doing there?

OLIVE: This flower has two different colors of purple...

the same birdie foot leaves... it's our violet alright!

But how did it get here?

ELINOR: And look! It has these pods with little ba*ls inside - they must be the seeds.

KIDS: Ohhhh...

Whoa!

ARI: It's small... it's orangey-brown with a white blobby tip...

OLIVE: It is a seed, and it looks just like the ones my mom and I planted!

ELINOR: So the violet has seeds inside these pods...

ARI: Ahhh...and they... Achoo!

Fly out into the air?

OLIVE: Maybe there's something about it in my nature book!

I found it! It says plants use a lot of different ways to spread their seeds so they can grow in new places.

Some stick to animals' fur and get carried to other places.

Some are light and fluffy so they get pushed by the wind.

And some plants have seeds in a little seed pod.

When the pod dries up, it gets so tight that it pops and the seeds fly out!

ARI: Like what we just saw!

ELINOR: So that's how these flowers ended up here.

Seeds from that first plant must have landed here.

ARI: Seed explosions means seeds everywhere!

ELINOR: Yeah! And if the seeds didn't explode out, they'd fall right next to the flower.

The expl*si*n helps the seeds fly out to different places!

OLIVE: Wait a second - maybe that's how we can spread our flyers.

ARI: [gasp] Should we make the flyers explode into the air?

ELINOR: [giggles] We don't want the flyers to explode...

but what if we can make them fly?

OLIVE: We could fold them into paper airplanes and send them around town that way!

ARI: Yeah! After all, they are flyers!

KIDS: [giggles]

KIDS: [sigh]

ARI: Aww, it's not working. Everyone is too busy to notice the flyers.

OLIVE: We'll never get anyone to come see my mom's garden.

ELINOR: Don't worry, Olive. Maybe there's another way we can pass out the flyers!

OLIVE: [gasp]

ELINOR: Huh? Oh. Hey little ants. Where ya off to?

[gasp] They're all carrying something with them...

ARI: Little orangey-brown dots...

KIDS: SEEDS!

ELINOR: Look, they're taking the seeds back to their ant hill.

OLIVE: Are they the same as the violet seeds from earlier?

ARI: Aha!

OLIVE: Same orangey-brown outside.

ELINOR: Same white blobby tip.

OLIVE: It must be a violet seed!

ARI: But why are the ants taking the seeds?

OLIVE: And look, ANOTHER patch of violets!

ELINOR: How did they end up here?

ARI: Hmm... Maybe a violet had a GIANT seed pod expl*si*n, sending the seeds all over town!

KIDS: [giggles]

ELINOR: I don't think the little pods can explode THAT much, Ari.

Hmmm. It looks like the ants are bringing the seeds back out of the hill to over here...

I wonder why?

ARI: And now the seeds look a little different - they don't have a white blobby tip anymore.

OLIVE: Maybe... they ate that part?

ELINOR: I think you're right, Olive! Maybe this is another way the violet spreads its seeds.

The seeds have something yummy, so the ants take the seeds with them.

OLIVE: Ooooh. And when the ants are done eating the yummy part,

they drop the seed and that's where a new plant grows!

ELINOR: Yes! That is SOOO interesting!

ARI: Hmm. Can we do something like that with our flyers?

ELINOR: [gasp] Yes! And I know what we can use as the treats. Come on!

Maybe we can give away Mr. Raccoon's treats with the flyers.

OLIVE: And then everyone will want to take one!

ARI: It can't hurt to try!

ELINOR: Hi Sally, hi Ms. Beaver!

Would you like a cookie from Mr. Raccoon's bakery?

SALLY: Sure, thanks Elinor!

[chomping]

Mmm. A new Flower Garden?

Is this today?

OLIVE: Yes! It's the grand opening!

MS. BEAVER: Ooh! I didn't know Animal Town had a Flower Garden. I love flowers.

Oh, wouldn't that be a beautiful way to spend our day together. Thanks for the flyer, kids!

SALLY: And the cookies!

OLIVE: Did you see what happened?

ARI: Yes - everyone loves a good cookie!

KIDS: [giggles]

OLIVE: That, and that Sally took the flyer because she wanted the cookie!

Just like the ants take the seeds because they want the yummy treat.

ELINOR: And when she unwrapped the cookie and saw the flyer, she was excited about the Flower Garden too!

ARI: I knew it would work all along.

KIDS: [giggle]

OLIVE: C'mon, let's wrap some more treats!

ELINOR: The treats are working, everyone is going to the Flower Garden!

OLIVE: Yeah! My mom is going to be soooo happy.

ARI: [sighs] Is there anything cookies can't do?

KIDS: [giggles]

[singing] ♪♪♪Seeds can get to lots of places,

And they grow in lots of spaces!

OLIVE: [singing]Some end up where the wind FLOWED,

And some use pods that EXPLODE!

KIDS: [singing]Seeds, seeds, seeds! Getting around is what they need.

Seeds, seeds, seeds! Oh yes, they find a way indeed!

ARI: [singing]Some seeds move because they're sticky! They get a ride. Yes, they're tricky!

ELINOR: [singing]Some get carried on ants' backs. Because they have a tasty snack!

KIDS: [singing]Seeds, seeds, seeds! Getting around is what they need.

Seeds, seeds, seeds! Oh yes, they find a way indeeeeed! ♪♪♪

KIDS: [giggles]

OLIVE: Say, "“agapanthus!"”

SALLY/MS. BEAVER: Agapanthus!

OLIVE: I KNEW that everyone would love your garden, Mom.

MS. ELEPHANT: Thank you again, kids,

it really is nice to see all of Animal Town enjoying the flowers.

ELINOR: Well, we have the flowers to thank!

OLIVE: Yeah! We learned that plants have lots of way to spread their seeds.

ARI: Ooh, and that reminds me of the other way violets spread their seeds...

Exploding treats!

OLIVE: [giggles] Now that's what I call flower power!

ALL: [giggles]

ELINOR: "The Snow Must Go On"

MR. LION: Kids, prepare yourself for a treat!

ARI: Ooh, is it a peanut butter and pickle sandwich?

Because I only ate two of those for breakfast and I could use another.

MR. LION: Oh, it's better than THREE peanut butter and pickle sandwiches.

ARI: Yes! Is it FOUR sandwiches?

MR. LION: Haha! In fact, it is creating art in nature out of nature!

ELINOR: Oh, I wonder if we're painting with berry juice?

OLIVE: Mhm. Maybe we're doing leaf rubbings.

ARI: Or making mud ANYTHING!

MR. LION: Actually, Olive, we are making sculptures out of nature's frostiest gift...

KIDS: Snow!

MR. LION: I have no doubt these will be the coolest art projects you've ever made.

KIDS: [cheer] Yeah! Yay!

SALLY: What should we sculpt, Mr. Lion?

MR. LION: Anything you like! Pick something you think is fun or special.

Sculpting is all about making shapes or statues that express something you feel, like this!

I sculpted these because when I'm dancing, I feel like I can lift up the world!

KIDS: Wow!

MR. LION: Now begin!

ELINOR: What are you two gonna sculpt?

ARI: I'm not sure yet, but I am sure about one thing...

it's a little chilly. Brr...

ELINOR: Really? Hmm... I don't feel cold.

OLIVE: Me neither.

ELINOR: Do you know what you're going to sculpt, Olive?

OLIVE: Actually, I'm just trying to figure out what Koa is doing.

ELINOR: Huh?

Koa, is this part of your sculpting?

KOA: I'm meditating with the snow.

OLIVE: Is it telling what to sculpt?

KOA: The snow is... A little shy right now. It needs to know, what is snow?

ELINOR: I don't know if this helps, but snow is just frozen water.

KOA: Snow is made of water? Whoa.

ELINOR: It sure is.

Snow is water in the air that gets frozen when it's cold. Then it falls to the ground.

KOA: [chuckles] Awesome!

Then I need to make a sculpture that honors its watery beginnings. Thanks, Elinor!

ELINOR: You're welcome!

OLIVE: What are you doing, Ari?

ARI: I'm trying to see if the snow will talk to me like it talks to Koa.

ELINOR: Is it giving you ideas?

ARI: Nope... just a cold ear!

KIDS: [giggles]

MR. LION: Wow, Koa! I love what you're doing! Uh... what is it?

KOA: I'm making a bowl of water, since that is the true essence of snow.

MR. LION: Amazing!

OLIVE: Wow! Everyone is making such great sculptures!

It looks like Sally is making a nice little log.

MR. LION: Tito I love your eagle, and Mary and Lizzy I love your, umm...

sculpture also.

OLIVE: What do you think Mary and Lizzy are making?

ARI: It is obviously an octopus.

ELINOR: Dancing with a chicken.

KIDS: In space!

OLIVE: Hmm, I can see that. Is that a beak?

ARI: Nope. Octopus tentacle.

OLIVE: Riiiight.

ELINOR: I have an idea. I think owls are really interesting,

so I'm going to sculpt a beautiful owl.

OLIVE: A Snowy Owl! And that's actually a real owl.

I have a picture of one right here!

ELINOR: Perfect! Thanks, Olive!

OLIVE: Don't thank me, thank the book! [gasp]

Now I know what I'm going to sculpt... a book.

ELINOR: Yeah! Let's go!

ARI: I think the snow is telling me to sculpt my favorite food! Thanks, snow!

What should it be? A big giant ice cream sundae? An enormous watermelon?

A peanut butter and pickle sandwich? Let's find out!

ELINOR: Wow! Your sculpture is looking awesome, Olive! It's so big!

OLIVE: I just need to add some details like little lines for the pages...

or a bookmark! Gotta have that!

Hmm... I'm almost out of snow. I need some more, but I don't see any around.

ELINOR: Don't worry, Olive. There's plenty of snow over here.

OLIVE: There sure is! Thanks, Elinor!

I like your sculpture, Ari!

ARI: Thanks! It's a jelly donut. I think...

Or a veggie burger? Or a watermelon? I'm still not sure.

MR. LION: Okay, everyone! Today's class is over, but not to worry.

We have plenty of time to finish our sculptures tomorrow before your parents come to see them!

OLIVE: I can't wait to show my mom my sculpture. She loves books almost as much as I do!

ELINOR: See you tomorrow, Mr. Lion.

MR. LION: Bye, kids!

OLIVE: I can't wait to finish our snow sculptures.

ARI: Me neith--

KIDS: [gasp]

ELINOR: What happened to our sculptures?!

OLIVE: My book sculpture is... ruined!

ELINOR: I'm so sorry, Olive. And, oh no, my owl!

ARI: [gasp] And Lizzy and Mary's sculpture is ruined.

And, uh oh, Koa's bowl of water is now ALL WATER!

KOA: Bummer.

ARI: But look! Tito's sculpture is still okay.

Hmm... We should probably tell Mr. Lion about this!

MR. LION: Oh no! My Atlas has been turned into a Venus de Milo!

OLIVE: What happened?!

ELINOR: I don't know. And why did only some of the sculptures get smooshed?

SALLY: Did someone knock over our sculptures?

ELINOR: Actually, I don't think anyone did anything! Take a look at this!

OLIVE: A puddle? So you think my sculpture melted?

ELINOR: It looks that way. Sorry, Olive.

KOA: Oh, I think my sculpture melted too!

I wanted to make a sculpture of water, not have my sculpture melt into water!

ARI: It is a little warmer today than it was yesterday.

Maybe that's what made the snow melt.

ELINOR: That could be, Ari, but how come only some of the sculptures melted and not all of them?

OLIVE: Maybe we can look for a pattern. That's always helpful when trying to solve a mystery.

ELINOR: Good thinking, Olive.

ARI: Maybe it depends on how big the sculpture was?

A big sculpture is probably harder to melt.

ELINOR: I don't think so, Ari, because Olive's sculpture

was one of the biggest in the whole class and it melted.

And Sally's log sculpture was much smaller and it didn't melt at all.

OLIVE: That's true.

What if it depends on the kind of sculpture it was?

Elinor, Mary, Lizzy, and Mr. Lion all made sculptures of animals and they all melted.

ELINOR: That's true, Olive,

but Tito made a sculpture of an eagle, and his didn't melt. But your book DID melt.

Hmm... I don't see any pattern.

OLIVE: Me neither, and all this investigating is making me chilly!

Oh, it's warmer over here. Ahh, that's better!

ELINOR: Hmm...

Olive, I think you figured it out!

OLIVE: I know. Wait... I did?

ELINOR: Yeah! You figured out the pattern!

All of the sculptures that melted are on this side.

OLIVE: Where it's sunny.

ELINOR: And all the sculptures that didn't melt are on this side.

OLIVE: Where it's shady.

ELINOR: Exactly! The shade from the building kept these sculptures cool.

ARI: Still cold!

ELINOR: But the sculptures that were left out in the warm sun...

KOA: Puddle city, dude.

OLIVE: We solved the mystery!

KIDS: [cheer] Woo-hoo! Yeah! [giggles]

MR. LION: Great thinking, kids! I'm sorry some of your sculptures melted.

What do you say we try again?

After all, the SNOW must go on!

ELINOR: And this time, we'll build them in the shade so they don't melt!

ARI: Good idea! Come on, everyone!

KIDS: [cheer] Yay! Yeah! [giggles]

MR. LION: Welcome to our snow art show, everyone!

We had a few setbacks, but the kids worked very hard to get these done today!

ELINOR: And we made sure to keep all of our sculptures out of the sun so they wouldn't melt.

MR. LION: Art and science mixed together. Isn't it so exciting, folks!

KIDS: [cheer] Yeah! Yay! [giggles]

ARI: Mom, Dad, check out my sculpture over here!

ELINOR: But Ari, you made your sculpture in the sun. It's going to melt!

ARI: That's ok. I did it on purpose.

I made a sculpture of one of my favorite snacks: a melted soy cheese sandwich.

Mmm, nice and melty, just the way I like it!

ALL: [laughter] ELINOR: Oh Ari. [giggles]
