Brad: Hello! Welcome to the show.

[humming] What's all that noise?

Whoa!

Yadina: Meet one of the very first electronic computers EVER.

Brad: We're meeting a computer on today's show?

Xavier: Nope!

We're meeting a computer programmer.

Grace Hopper.

Yadina: A computer programmer is someone who writes

special instructions to tell computers what to do.

Brad: Like, 'Computer, please play music.'

This thing on? ...Uaaah!

Xavier: Back then, computers couldn't do as much

as they do today.

They were basically giant math machines.

Yadina: Good thing Grace Hopper was around to help change that.

Now let's start the show! [click]

Brad: I cannot WAIT to build our robots in class today.

Xavier: Good thing I found this shoebox under my bed.

[blows dust off]

[coughing]

A bit dusty though.

Yadina: So that explains all the shoeboxes.

Dr. Zoom thought it was

bring-your-turtle-to-school- in-a-shoebox day.

Brad: They all have shoeboxes?

Xavier: Yeah. For the robot body.

Brad: I didn't bring a box.

I got a ball.

So the robot could roll.

Yadina: [off screen] Ooo, that sounds fun!

Brad: [off screen] Uhhh, I dunno.

I don't want to be the ONLY one using a ball.

What if it doesn't work?

What if everyone laughs?

Uhh...

Got any more shoeboxes under your bed?

Xavier: Oh, Brad.

You do not wanna go under there.

Brad: Oy vey...

Yadina: Hmm...

I have a better idea for where to go.

Yadina/Xavier: To the Secret Museum!

Brad: [shouts] Wait up!

♪♪

Xavier: I wonder who the Secret Museum will send us to meet?

Yadina: And where we'll go?

Brad: [weakly] And when?

[coockoo clock chimes] Uaaah!

Yadina: Look out below! Xavier: Woohoo!

Xavier/Yadina: Hi, Berby. Berby: [blee blarp]

Brad: Hi, Berby. Berby: [blar bloop]

Brad: Uff!

Xavier: [humming] Berby: [bloop]

We're getting something!

Yadina: An old alarm clock?

Brad: Maybe it's here to tell us

that class is gonna start soon,

so we better get going...

Berby: [blar bloop]

[computer whirring]

Xavier: Look! Grace Hopper.

That's who we're going to meet.

Yadina: [off screen] In New York, in .

Brad: But that's...

[mumbling]

that's over years ago!

Uh! I'm not sure robots existed back then.

[zap]

Xavier: Maybe...only one way to find out!

Ready for adventure?

Yadina: Ready!

Brad: Ummm...y'know what?

No need! I'll just...

use this for my robot body.

[rapidly deflating sound]

[POP!]

Uh...

[sighs] Okay...ready.

Berby: [whirring]

[blee blarp]

Yadina: Here we go!

Berby: [whirring] [blar bloop]

Xavier: It's happening! Yadina: Hang on, Dr. Zoom!

Xavier: Woohoo!

Brad: Woaaaah!

Berby: [blee blee blar bloop!]

[zap]

[blee blar bloop]

Xavier: Huh.

So this is New York in .

Brad: Huh.

Very living room-y.

Grace Hopper: [off screen] Hey! Brad: Uaah!

Grace Hopper: Stop those tiny pieces!

[bouncing/plinking sounds]

Xavier: Woah!

[bounce/boing/plink]

Brad: Uaah!

Yadina: Ah!

Xavier: Woah! [giggles]

Brad: [gasp]

[boing] Brad: Oh!?

Grace Hopper: Woah! [laughs] Berby: [whirring]

Yadina: [off screen] That's Grace Hopper!

Brad: Nice catch!

Yadina: So, what are these for?

Brad: Are you building a robot, too??

Grace Hopper: Nope! I'm taking something apart.

My alarm clock.

Xavier: [to self] Like the one in the Secret Museum.

Or half of it.

Uh, what happened?

Grace Hopper: I wanted to find out how it works,

so I opened it up to examine the insides, and...

the pieces sproinged out

before I could see how they fit together.

But that's exactly why I'm going to open another clock.

Brad: Y-you're going to do it again?

Grace Hopper: Uh-huh.

And now that there's four of us,

maybe together, we can open a clock

without the insides exploding.

[parts clinking]

[giggle]

Brad: Or, maybe the expl*si*n will be

four times as big! [giggle]

Grace Hopper: Maybe! We'll never know unless we try.

Xavier: Count us in!

Yadina: Oooh yes.

Grace Hopper: Great!

Screwdriver, please.

Xavier: Screwdriver.

[embarassed chuckle]

It's my first clock operation.

Grace Hopper: My second!

Ehm! Now, hold the back steady.

Steeeaaady...

Okay...

Let go!

[sproing] All: Uaaah!

[boing] [plink]

Grace Hopper: Uh-oh!

[running grunts]

Phew!

This thing almost falls a lot!

Brad: We didn't get to see how the pieces fit together.

Grace Hopper: That's okay.

We have a few different kinds of alarm clocks.

I'll never know unless I try.

Brad: I think I get why the Secret Museum sent me here:

to talk me out of trying to build a round robot.

Berby: [blur bloop]

Yadina: I think Berby disagrees.

Brad: Woaaaah!

Yadina: Where are we?

Brad: When are we?

Berby: [blee blee blur]

Xavier: We're in a computer lab at Harvard University,

years later.

Brad: But, where are all the computers?

Grace Hopper: Right here!

This is Mark,

one of the very first computers ever made.

Brad: Woah!

Uh, you're not going to take it apart, are you?

Grace Hopper: [laughs] No.

I'm in the US Navy now,

working as a computer programmer.

That means I write special instructions

that make computers work.

Yadina: I wonder what a computer

THIS big is used for, Dr. Zoom?

Grace Hopper: Math.

Xavier: And...?

Grace Hopper: For now, computers only understand numbers.

So adding, subtracting and other types of math

is all they're used for.

But I think computers could do more.

What if we could teach computers

to understand words?

If we could use numbers

AND words to tell computers what to do,

the possibilities could be...

...endless!

Brad: Hmm...

but if no one else has done it,

how do you know it'll work?

Grace Hopper: I don't!

I'll never know unless I try.

Brad: I hope this goes better than her clock experiments.

Berby: [blar bloop]

Yadina: Guess we're about to find out!

Brad: More time travel?!

[groans]

♪♪ Woaaaah!

Grace Hopper: Hello again!

Welcome to my office in Washington, DC.

Yadina: Grace! Nice place you got here.

Grace Hopper: Why, thank you!

Care to meet my new computer?

Look how small it is!

Xavier: Uh... [giggles] yeah... small!

[whispers] For a computer from .

Grace Hopper: I was just playing a little game.

It works using a program

that I helped to write.

Left. [keyboard clicking/beep]

Right. [keyboard clicking/beep]

Up. [keyboard clicking/beep]

Up again!

Brad: [gasps] Hey!

You're using words to tell the computer what to do!

So... your idea worked?

Grace Hopper: It did!

Yadina: Super amazing!

Did you ever figure out how clocks work?

Grace Hopper: Mm-hmm. I sure did.

Have a look!

[clock ticking]

Yadina: [off screen] Um, Grace?

It's moving backwards.

Grace Hopper: [laughs] It reminds me that

just because something is usually done one way,

doesn't mean it can't be done another.

You'll never know unless you try.

Brad: Grace Hopper completely changed

the way computers work,

by trying something no one else had done.

Maybe I can build my robot

in a different way, too.

Xavier: Brad, you can totally do it!

Grace Hopper: Oh! I have to go.

The Navy is awarding me a service medal

for all my great computer work. Good bye!

Xavier: Bye bye! Yadina: Bye!

Brad: Berby, let's go home.

Berby: [blee blar bloop]

I decided to make it with a ball instead of a box,

because, then I thought it could do this...

[applause]

[giggles] Thank you!

Brad: Boop-buh-boop-boop!

I'm SO glad I worked up the courage

to try building my robot in a different way.

Xavier: Just like Grace Hopper, who dared to be different

and came up with new ways to program computers.

[bling] [boop boop boop boop]

Yadina: [off screen] She helped create a computer language

that's STILL used today.

Grace was a total trailblazing

woman in computer science!

Brad: And the inspiration for

the world's first ROUND ROBOT!

Berby: [whirring] [blar blar bloop!]

Brad: [laughs] Okay!

Maybe not the VERY first round robot.

Berby: [blurp!]

Brad: Ugh? AHH!!

Eeeee!

Xavier: Thanks for joining our awesome adventure

Brad: Who used to be a kid,

just like you and me.

Yadina: So kids like you can change the world!

Xavier: I am Xavier.

Brad: He was born in ,

and is a celebrated violin virtuoso.

Yadina: That means someone who plays the violin really well.

♪ [beautiful violin music]

Xavier: [chuckles] Looks like that's our cue...

♪ [kids playing instruments off key] ♪

Xavier: ♪ [playing 'Hot Crossed Buns']

Katie: Hey, who's playing Hot Crossed Buns?

It sounds great!

Xavier: Thanks, Katie! It's Xavier.

Are you in the band too? Katie: You bet!

The school band is one of my favourite after-school clubs.

Are you nervous for your first day?

Xavier: Nah. I've played recorder in not one,

but TWO talent shows.

So, I feel pretty good.

Music Teacher: 'Afternoon, everyone.

Let's begin today's practice with a new song.

Take some time to learn the first few bars on your own,

and then we can all practice them together.

Xavier: 'Mary Had a Little Lamb'?

I can learn this no problem.

[deep inhale]

♪ [other kids playing instruments] ♪

Katie: Xavier. Xavier: Huh?

Katie: Is everything okay?

I can't hear your recorder.

Xavier: Huh? Oh. I'm fine.

I just got a little distracted.

I'm not used to practicing with so many people.

Katie: I get it.

Try focusing on just the sounds

you're making.

Xavier: Right. Thanks, Katie.

[long inhale] ♪ [plays one note]

[stops playing] ♪ [instruments cross-playing]

Music Teacher: [off screen] You should all know

the first bar by now.

Xavier! Xavier: [startled gasp]

Music Teacher: Would you like to go first?

Xavier: Uhh...

♪ [tense music]

[big gulp]

[long inhale]

Xavier: [groan]

Yadina: Xavier, are you okay? Xavier: No!

The whole class was learning a new song,

but there was so much going on

with the tuba and the drums

and I just...

couldn't. [sighs]

Maybe I should just quit.

Yadina: No way!

You were SO excited to join the band.

Brad: Yeah! This was only your first day.

Maybe you just need a bit of help.

Yadina: [excited gasp] Brad: [worried] Ummm-

Yadina: And you know where we can get help!

Brad: [uneasy groan]

Xavier/Yadina: To the Secret Museum!

Brad: [sighs] Wait for me!

Xavier: I wonder who the Secret Museum will send us to meet?

Brad: Uff!

Xavier: [humming] Berby: [wooo]

Xavier: We're getting something!

Brad: A violin?

Does the Secret Museum want Xavier to switch instruments?

[computer whirring]

Xavier: It must have belonged to him.

Itzhak Perlman.

That's who we're going to meet!

Yadina: In Israel, in the year .

Brad: That's... [gasps]

Almost years ago!

Oy vey.

Xavier: I wonder how he can help me learn

like everyone else in the band?

Only one way to find out.

Ready for adventure?

Yadina: Ready!

Brad: Oh, well, um-

maybe switching instruments isn't such a bad idea.

[deep breath]

Alright...ready.

Berby: [whirring]

Yadina: Here we go!

Berby: [blee blarp]

Xavier: It's happening! Yadina: Hang on, Dr.Zoom!

Xavier: Woohoo!

Brad: Woaaaah!

Berby: [blee blee blar bloop!]

Xavier/Yadina/Brad: Woah!! [thud]

Berby: [blar bloop]

Xavier: So this is Israel in .

♪ [soft violin music]

Yadina: [soft gasp]

Does anyone else hear that?

Xavier: It's beautiful!

Brad: Hey, is that...? Berby: [blee blee blarp]

♪ [soft violin music] Berby: [whirring]

Yadina: That's Itzhak Perlman!

Xavier: Thanks Berby!

♪♪

Brad: Uaah!

Yadina: Ah!

Xavier: Ugh!

Yadina: Wow.... Xavier: It's beautiful.

Itzhak Perlman: [speaking Hebrew] Toda raba--

Xavier: Hm?

Yadina: I think he's speaking Hebrew,

we need the translator!

Itzhak: Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Xavier: I didn't know the violin could sound so...

beautiful!

Itzhak: I think so too.

I first heard the violin

when I was only three years old.

But right away, I fell in love with the sound

and knew I had to play.

Xavier: That's kinda like me, with the recorder.

I fell in love the first time I heard 'Hot Crossed Buns'.

But to join the school band,

I have to learn new songs the same way as the other kids

and I just...can't!

Itzhak: I understand.

I can't play the same way as the other violinists.

Yadina: Ummm, I'm no violin expert,

but, you play pretty good to me.

Itzhak: Thanks but,

most violinists play standing up.

That doesn't really work for me,

because I use crutches to stand.

Xavier: Oh...how come?

Itzhak: I had a sickness called polio.

It made my legs very weak.

But I love playing the violin.

So, I can do it in my own way.

Sitting down!

Oh! Which reminds me,

I need to get back to practicing.

Xavier/Yadina/Brad: Hm?

Brad: Maybe he's going to practice after his nap?

Itzhak: [giggles] I am practicing.

In my mind.

Xavier: Uh...

Brad: Uh...

Itzhak: [giggles]

My music teacher says

I need to practice for three whole hours every day.

But playing the violin for THAT long is exhausting!

So, I can do it in my own way!

You can practice with just your brain.

♪ [violin music] So maybe I can give my arms a rest

♪ [violin music] by visualizing the notes I need to play.

You wanna try it with me?

Xavier: Uh, okay...

Xavier/Itzhak: ♪ [humming 'Marry Had a Little Lamb'] ♪

Xavier: This IS a fun way to practice!

Itzhak: I'm glad it works for you!

But I think I'll stick to my

favourite practice method:

taking a break!

Brad: Don't gotta tell me twice!

Aaaah!

Itzhak: [grunting]

Xavier: Soccer? But, if you need crutches to walk,

how can you play soccer?

Itzhak: Well, I can't run around like some kids.

But, I can do it in my own way.

And I happen to be one of the best goalies

in the neighborhood!

Go ahead, try and kick it past me!

Yadina: I got it!

Heads up, Brad!

[kick/bounce]

Itzhak: Saved it!

Yadina: Nice! Alright! Xavier: Woohoo! Yeaaah!

Brad: Yay!

Itzhak: That was great!

And now that I've got my energy up,

I'm ready to practice.

♪ [fast violin music]

Yadina: He's even better at the violin

than he is at playing goalie!

Xavier: Itzhak's own way of practicing,

and playing, totally works.

It doesn't matter if he does it a bit differently

from other people.

Maybe it is okay that I don't learn the same way

as the other kids in the band.

Maybe I can do it in my own way.

Xavier: Hey Katie. Katie: Xavier!

I'm so happy you came back.

Xavier: I talked to the teacher and she said it's alright

if I practice in my own way.

I brought headphones to block out all the noise.

Aaaaand, I'm going to face the wall

so there are no distractions in sight.

Katie: Great idea! Want me to tap you on the shoulder,

so you know when practice time is over?

Xavier: That would be great, thanks!

Alright,

[grunting]

I'm goin' in!

[sighs]

[deep breath]

Xavier/Yadina: Wheeee! [laughing]

Xavier: I learned SO much from Itzhak Perlman!

Yadina: He kept practicing,

and when he was only years old,

he was invited to play on TV

for millions of people around the world!

Xavier: It was one of the first times people saw

a solo violinist play while sitting down.

This helped a lot of people realize,

that there's more than one way to do something.

Brad: His violin playing is BEE-utiful!

Xavier/Yadina/Brad: [giggling]/[buzzing like bees]
