Xavier: Getting ready for the amazing business woman

we're about to meet:

Madam C.J. Walker!

Brad: She didn't have a lot growing up,

but she had dreams of a better life for herself,

her family, and her community.

When she grew up, she became an entrepreneur.

Yadina: An entrepreneur is someone

who starts their own business.

And Madam C.J. Walker's business

was VERY successful.

Brad: I wonder what her business was all about?

Xavier: I think it had to do with hair.

Let's start the show to find out!

Yadina: Brad? What's the big hurry?

Brad: [panting] Yadina!

I wanted to get here before Xavier's lemonade ran out!

Yadina: Actually...

Brad: [gasps] It's all gone??

Awwww!

Yadina: Quite the opposite, Brad.

Come on, follow me!

Xavier: [off screen] [giggle] Whoo! Yeah!

Yadina: Hey Xavier, is the lemonade ready yet?

Xavier: Brad, Yadina! Check it out!

Ha! Hoo! Yadina: [gasps]

Xavier: Woah! I've been juggling ALL morning.

Look how fast I can go!

Brad: Cooool, but weren't you

supposed to sell lemonade today?

To make money for that thing you really wanted?

Xavier: [off screen] Oh, yeah!

I do really want that pogo stick!

[thump] Ugh!

But...making lemonade is a LOT of work.

I just don't know if it's worth it.

Ooooooh, what should I do??

Yadina: [gasps] I've got an idea...

can help with my lemonade stand?

Yadina: Only one way to find out...

I'm Sarah.

This is Brad. Brad: Um, hi!

Xavier: Yadina. Yadina: And Dr. Zoom!

Xavier: [hushed] Berby, I thought we were

supposed to meet Madam C.J. Walker?

Berby: [blurp!...blar bloop!]

Brad: [gasps] More chickies!

These are the cutest chickies I have ever seen!

Sarah: Hehe.

Have fun!

Yadina: Don't you wanna play, too?

Sarah: Oh, I'd love to, but

I have to get back to my chores.

The choices I make now, can help me later.

Xavier: What do you mean?

Sarah: Well, there's a fish fry tonight.

And I'd really love to head down with some fresh braids.

My Mama does 'em the best.

And she said,

if I get my chores done

AND get a bath ready,

she'll wash and braid my hair before we go!

[giggles]

So I'm gonna choose to keep on working,

instead of playing with these cute little chickies.

Even if it's hard.

Xavier: Well, getting a bath ready should be easy.

Yadina: All you have to do is turn on the faucet for a bath.

Sarah: It's not that simple...

Uh!

'Round here, baths take a lot of work.

First, you gotta draw the water from the well,

heat it over a fire,

until the tub's full.

Then do it all again,

THEN you can get to bathin'.

Xavier: Oh yeah... most people

didn't have indoor plumbing or electricity in .

This was how they took a bath.

Sarah: I'd better get a move on. Bye now!

Xavier/Yadina: Bye!

Xavier: Hmm.

[gasps] I get it.

The Secret Museum is telling me

to open a baby- chick petting zoo.

Brad: [gasps] Yes!

Berby: [blar bloop]

Yadina: Whoa. Where are we?

Brad: When are we?

Berby: [blee blar bloop]

Xavier: Berby says we're in Colorado, years later.

Sarah: [off screen] [grunting]]

Yadina: Hi, Sarah!

Sarah: Oh, hello again!

Brad: Uuuh, what are you making?

Sarah: Remember when I told you

how hard it was to take a bath?

Yadina: Uh huh!

Sarah: Well, not being able to wash your hair too often,

means a lot of folks have hair that breaks,

falls out, or is just plain itchy.

Especially in winter.

Yadina: Oh no!

What can they do?

Sarah: I'll let you all in on a secret:

I'm experimenting with ingredients

to make a hair remedy.

Something that'll keep hair healthy, happy,

and on people's heads.

Brad: Whoa. Making a hair remedy sounds hard.

Sarah: It is.

Xavier: But, wouldn't you like to be doing something fun?

Like--

Juggling?!

Sarah: [chuckles] Well sure!

BUT what I really want

is to start my own business

that'll help Black women in my community

care for their hair.

The choices I make now can help me later.

So I'm choosing to keep working on this.

Xavier: Huh.

Sarah's choosing to work hard,

so she can get what she really wants.

I wonder if it is worth it?

Berby: [bloop blarp]

♪♪ Brad: Whoa-aaa-aaah!

Yadina: Where are we?

Brad: When are we?

Berby: [blee blar bloop]

Xavier: A hair salon in Indiana.

Six years later.

Yadina: And look!

Xavier: It's Sarah!

So, is this her salon?

Did her hair remedy work?

Madam C.J. Walker: [off screen] Oh yes it did!

But I go by Madam C.J. Walker now.

Yadina: [gasps] And your hair...

is so beautiful!

Madam C.J. Walker: Why, thank you!

I think Mama would be proud.

I'm so glad I kept working on my hair care products.

Now I can help other Black women look after their hair,

and maybe even help them start their own businesses!

Like I did.

It's a real dream come true!

Xavier: Whoa.

Madam C.J. Walker chose to work hard

to earn what she really wanted:

her own business,

that could help her entire community.

So, maybe I should choose to work hard

to earn what I really want, too:

a pogo stick we can all play with!

Yadina: Sounds like a plan to me!

Brad: Yeah. And we'll help!

Xavier: [gasps] That would be great!

It was SO inspiring to meet Madam C.J. Walker.

She worked really hard to start her own business,

then KEPT working hard to help more Black women

open up businesses too!

Yadina: There weren't many jobs open to African Americans,

so what she did was EXTRA awesome.

Brad: She even used the money she earned to help buy groceries

for neighbours, and make donations to schools.

I do think flowers make that place look nice.

My mother lets me pick a few every week.

I just love being surrounded by so many colours.

Brad: Great idea!

We could cover our sheet of paper in roses!

The museum does need a little more pink.

Xavier: I agree, but these yellow ones would

totally get people's attention.

Edwin: Oh yes!

Yadina: [off screen] We gotta go with blue.

Look how it brings out Dr. Zoom's eyes!

Brad: What's wrong with pink? Pink's pretty.

Xavier: What's wrong with yellow?

Yadina: Blue, blue! Blue is beautiful.

Harold: Marble...

Xavier: That is one handy-dandy crayon.

Yadina: What are you making next?

Harold: Glad you asked!

I was visiting some schools today

when I saw these...

Brad: Are those... colour crayons?

Alice: [off screen] [laughs] Hardly!

They're no different than sticks of wood!

Edwin: This Alice.

She used to be a teacher.

Alice: So I know a thing or two about crayons.

Now look here.

See? Brittle as dusty old chalk.

Hardly... [chalk screech]

leaves...a mark!

Yadina: Well that's no fun.

Brad: I can't believe crayons used to be like this.

Alice: Kids deserve to draw with something much nicer,

like our black crayons, but in colour!

Edwin: [gasps] Excellent idea, Alice!

We could make crayons in every colour.

Harold: Yes!

And they shouldn't cost much,

so schools and kids can afford them.

Alice: And they must be made with safe ingredients.

Edwin: Well! We've got crayons to make!

Coming? I want to hear more of your ideas!

Listening to everyone's ideas is good teamwork.

Yadina: It feels like melty chocolate.

Alice: Uh huh! The crayons need to be harder,

so they don't smudge.

And smaller, so they're easier to hold.

Alice: Let's try this.

[snap] Ugh!

These crayons are the right size,

but break too easily.

And the colours need to be brighter.

Edwin: Oo I like that!

Yes, stronger! And more colour!

This is working!

We did it!

Alice: Now these crayons are just the right size

and safe enough--

Harold: And affordable enough--

Edwin: And colourful enough for children everywhere to enjoy!

Brad: Whoa!

Now those are crayons!

Xavier: Yup. And Edwin made them

with our World Art Day decoration.
