♪ Wild Kratts!

Chris: In North America,

the Appalachian Mountains are a range of rolling green hills

with an amazing ecosystem winding along their base.

We're here in a cold clear, Appalachian stream.

It's us, the Kratt Brothers. I'm Chris.

Martin: I'm Martin. And this this exactly

where you want to be when you're looking for

the largest salamander in North America.

The challenge is, the rocks are slippery,

and the current's fast.

Chris: Another challenge is,

this salamander is really well camouflaged.

♪♪

Martin, by your foot!

Martin: Hellbender!

Chris: Awesome!

[laughter]

Martin: Oh yeah!

Now let's get a closer look at this hellbender.

Whoa! Ah, so slimy!

All that mucus, right? Chris: Yeah...

Martin: And flat. The body's so flat.

So streamlined for life in these fast moving rivers.

Chris: And the tail is flat the other way - up and down -

so that it can propel the salamander through the water.

They can even swim upstream.

Martin: And there are a lot of predators

after these hellbenders.

Mink, blue heron, otters,

so sometimes they gotta make a fast getaway.

Chris: See how they have that really broad head?

Well the mouth runs all along that front part,

so they have a big mouth

that can open really wide.

Martin: And that's for gulping crayfish.

And now, against this background,

you can really see the coloration

which give it the power of camouflage

in this sandy, rocky, river bottom.

Hellbenders and other salamanders

are such cool creatures.

Chris: And there are so many different kinds,

with amazing creature powers.

Martin: Imagine, if we had salamander powers!

Martin/Chris: What if!

Martin/Aviva/Koki: [laughter]

Jimmy Z: Got some fresh poppety-pop-popcorn!

Koki: Now this is how you stream

an afternoon movie.

Chris: Hey, don't eat too many of those!

They're from the endangered butternut tree.

All: [laughter]

Martin: Funny movie!

Martin: What? Aviva: Hey!

Koki: Oh no! Jimmy Z: What's happening?

All: Whoa!

Martin: What is going on, Koki?

Koki: We suddenly lost all power!

And the backup isn't responding!

Aviva: All our technology is down?

Martin: What in the creature world?!

Jimmy Z: So how are we finishing the movie?

Koki: Sorry g*ng, I've never seen anything like this.

The power is dead, and, and...

I have no answer.

No streaming today.

Aviva: What? Really?!

Jimmy Z: What are we going to do?

Chris: We can still stream.

Martin/Aviva/Jimmy Z/Koki: Huh?

Chris: Just another kind of streaming...

Salamander streaming!

Jimmy Z: What's that? Martin: Ooh, I know!

Martin: Salamander Streaming!

They're not getting it.

Chris: Salamander streaming is getting miniaturized,

and going down a stream

looking for salamanders.

Martin: Going down a stream in teeny tiny boats,

looking for salamanders.

Chris/Martin: That's Salamander Streaming!

Jimmy Z: Ohhhh, okay...

Aviva: Interesting, sounds fun.

Chris: It's a race to find as many salamanders as we can,

before we get to that bridge.

Jimmy Z: Is it going to be scary or fun?

Chris: Think of it like you're in a video game.

Jimmy Z: So it's real-life Raft Chasers?

I'm in! Koki: Seriously?!

We've gotta fix the Tortuga!

Our headquarters, base of operations,

how we travel the world?!

Martin: Aw, c'mon Koki.

Come salamander streaming with us,

just for a little bit.

Koki: No! I've got to get the Tortuga running again.

Besides, salamanders are too slimy.

[zap]

Martin: Oh, I love salamanders, naturally.

They're water creatures.

Jimmy Z: What's the diff between a lizard and a salamander?

Chris: I can answer that.

First off, salamanders aren't lizards.

Here are the differences.

Salamanders have smooth little fingers.

Lizards have claws.

Also salamanders are amphibians,

while lizards are reptiles.

Martin: Both have nostrils for breathing.

Buuut, salamanders can breathe

through skin, lizards can't.

Some salamanders live mostly on land,

and some salamanders live mostly in water.

And nearly every salamander spends

some of its life in the water.

Chris: I wonder if there are any climbing salamanders?

Martin: Only some salamanders climb,

but there are plenty of

swimming salamanders!

Let's go salamander streaming and find 'em!

Oh, what are we going to use for teeny tiny boats?

Chris: I know! Each of us has to make our own

personalized mini boat

before we miniaturize!

Martin: Great idea. This'll be fun!

Chris: Hmm...what should I make my boat out of?

[bonk]

Uh...a butternut...kayak!

A butternut kayak!

And maple seed pods!

Plus a twig!

This will be my paddle.

Martin: Ooh, a crayfish.

Oh, and another one,

shedding its exoskeleton.

Crayfish have a skeleton on the outside,

an external skeleton,

called an exoskeleton.

Yeah, as a crayfish grows, it sheds the old exoskeleton,

and there's a new one underneath.

After the crayfish crawls out and away,

it's left behind.

The crayfish exoskeleton.

Oh, does that look like an epic mini boat, or what?!

Every boat needs a name and I will name you...

Cray-skel.

Aviva: [giggles] Now Martin's even naming boats.

Leaves have internal flotation properties,

and I can join them together

with my BioPlasma Micro-Welder into...

My Leafy Longboat!

[giggles]

I just named mine too.

She's everything I need to win this salamander race,

and program a Salamander Power Suit along the way.

Jimmy Z: I like this one!

Aviva: Uh, Jimmy, that won't do.

But...how...about...this?

Jimmy Z: Wow!

Aviva: Pull on this rope to control the sail.

But NOT on this one,

because this rope keeps the raft tied together.

Jimmy Z: Thanks, Aviva! I love it!

Chris: Okay, we'll race from here,

down to that bridge.

Expand Miniaturizer.

And now we miniaturize.

Martin: To the teeny-tiny boats!

Chris: On your marks!

Aviva: Get set...

Martin: Go!

Jimmy Z: Uh...

How are we gonna get to the stream now?

Martin: Uh...

Martin/Chris/Aviva: Koookiiii!!

Koki: Our HQ is down and they're playing.

Your race looks fun, but I got to fix the Tortuga.

What if we get in a jam?

They'd be no way to help.

Martin: [chuckles] Thanks, Koki.

Koki: On-your-marks-get-set go.

Martin: Woo hoo, yeah!

Martin/Chris/Aviva/Jimmy Z: Salamander streaming!

Martin: Yeah, to the stream.

Salamanders, ahoy!

Chris: I love this kind of streaming.

Martin: Me too! Cause I really love

swimming salamanders.

Woo hoo!

Jimmy Z: Actually, I think this is fun.

Hoist the mainsail!

Uh-oh! Ah!

[splash]

Help!

This water is...WET!

Well, at least I still have a stick boat.

Whoa...a salamander!

Hi, little guy.

Hey Chris, I found a salamander.

What kind is he?

Chris: That's a Northern two-lined salamander.

It has a long body and teeny tiny legs.

And it looks like it has racing stripes.

Sometimes they... Jimmy! Look behind you!

It's a salamander-eating salamander!

A predatory spring salamander.

Rrruuuunnn!

Jimmy Z: Ahhhh!!

[loud splash]

Chris: Jimmy! Jimmy, are you there?

Aviva: Hmmm..

Both of those salamanders had these features.

One, moist skin.

And two, no claws.

This is good info for a salamander power suit.

Jimmy Z: [panting]

Aw...phew.

That was close.

But I found two salamanders already.

I'm in the lead.

Hey, oh! Oh, no!

I dropped my Creaturepod.

How am I gonna get out of here?

Chris: Well, Jimmy's winning.

He already found two salamanders.

Martin: Yeah, we got to catch up.

Aviva: My turn next. See ya.

Chris: I have bring out my kayak training.

Cross current paddle, eddy reverse!

Oh h*, I love being on the water.

In my personalized kayak,

I will find salamanders.

Nothing can stop me.

I'll just slide into a roll

and check for salamanders under water.

Mmmm-hm-mmm.

What's going on?!

Whoa!

Koki: [sighs] What in the creature world

powered down the Tortuga?

It's something technological that I'm just missing.

[frustrated sigh]

Chris: Whoa, ah, ah... ooo...ooo...oooh!

Ah...aaaaahhh....oooh!

Aaah! [lifting grunts]...yuh!

I'm in a red squirrel cache.

A cache being the place where a squirrel hides nuts.

[climbing grunts] How am I gonna get out of here?

Aviva: Ok, what salamanders have we seen on our last adventures?

The fire salamander and the human fish ....

Wait a second!

I never even programmed a salamander power suit,

but we already have a lot of information.

Because, check this out.

Almost every salamander seems to have the same basic body design.

I can start with this,

and maybe,

I can make a Universal Salamander Power Suit!

Chris: That'd be salamazing!

And I think I found one. A salamander!

♪ [dramatic music]

Jimmy Z: I'm not a salamander.

I'm just lost.

Chris: Jimmy!

Jimmy Z: Ugh! Phew. Hey, Chris.

Martin: Ahoy, Aviva! Aviva: Martin!

Martin: Have you found any salamanders yet?

Aviva: Not yet. [gasps] But hey, look!

That looks like a classic salamander body design.

But it's almost feet long!

Can a salamander be that big?!

Martin: Oh yeah, it can.

But only if you've found the biggest salamander

in North America, the hellbender.

Oh! Wow!

[chuckles] Yes!

I found one too.

Aviva: Tell me about them.

Where do they live? What do they eat?

Martin: Oh, yeah.

They live under big rocks, in clear fast moving rivers,

like this one - and they eat crayfish.

A hellbender uses suction to catch crayfish.

[loud sucking sound]

Aviva: I've got to play that back in slo-mo.

The hellbender opens its mouth quickly

and the water rushes in,

bringing the crayfish into the hellbender's mouth.

Suction!

Martin: Uh, did you say "crayfish"?

Aah!! Aviva: Get some good info!

Martin: I'm on it. [water splashes]

Hellbender's are beautiful,

in an awesomely ugly way. [chuckles]

Whoa!

And look at those foldy-flappy-flaps.

That's what I'll name him.

Foldy Flappy Flaps.

Aviva: That's a great name Martin, one of your best!

Martin: [chuckles] Thanks, Aviva!

Hey, Foldy Flappy Flaps, like every hellbender,

breathes through his skin,

absorbing oxygen out of the water.

So, having folds of skin,

gives him more skin to breathe with.

Aviva: Breathing through skin?!

That's an amazing ability!

Martin: Yeah! And check this out.

Hellbender has a streamline shape.

Flat, wide, and low,

which gives a hellbender the power,

to crawl on the bottom of rushing streams

without being swept away.

Even crawling upstream in the strongest currents.

Aviva: Wow! This is great stuff!

Streamlined for walking in rushing water.

Martin: Yeah. Hey, and don't forget the strong gripping toes,

with no nails or claws!

Koki: I know every system of this ship

backwards and forwards,

but I'm missing something!

What am I missing?

Aviva: Okay! So the universal salamander features are...

moist skin, long body and tail,

toes with no nails or claws,

can swim in water and walk on land.

A body design that can do both.

And of course,

we've got plenty of variety in cute faces,

and colorful patterns to spice things up.

Chris: [grunting] Jimmy Z: Steady, almost there!

Chris: Can you reach it?

Jimmy Z: Just a little higher!

Chris/Jimmy Z: Whoa! Ugh! Oooh!

Jimmy Z: Aww! Chris: Brrrr!

Looks like we're going to have to find

another way out. C'mon!

[gasps] A way out!

Whoa. Tiger salamander.

[chuckles] And it's a green one too!

Jimmy Z: Wait up, tiger salamander!

Whoa!!

Chris: Not you again!

Tiger salamander, come baaaaacck!

Oh, wait. You're so green.

Don't go!

Oh! Our exit is blocked.

Jimmy Z: What are we going to do?

Chris: Martin, Aviva, come in!

Help, I think we're being held c*ptive by a red squirrel.

Jimmy Z: Who won't let us go!

Aviva: How are we going to get to them?

We're tiny. And they're all the way up river,

and overland in the forest.

Martin: Hmm. Well, remember

the power suit you're programming

has the powers of salamanders,

who are amphibians.

Aviva: Meaning, they can move on land

and move in the water.

Martin: Yeah, so let's activate salamander powers

and rescue Chris and Jimmy!

Aviva: I love this part,

seeing how my Salamander Power Suit programming works.

Martin: Uh, or if there's a malfunction.

[laughing] Aviva: Stop it!

Martin/Aviva: Insert salamander power discs.

Touch salamander.

Activate Salamander powers!

♪♪♪

Martin: Oh Aviva, remember,

you always got to come out of the power

glowing like a "super hero adventure pose".

Aviva: Huh?! Oh, yeah.

Like this!

Martin: Nice!

Now let's crawl upstream to save Chris and Jimmy!

Aviva: To the Creature Rescue!

Martin: Wow, being streamlined like a hellbender

really works!

Aviva: Grip the bottom and the water just flows over us.

Koki: Aargh! [loud kick]

[bonk]

Huh?!

♪♪

What are you doing up there?

Hmm? Aahhh!!!

What in the world?

Hmm?!

[beep]

[humming sound]

That was it?

Nuttin' but some nuts?

♪♪

Martin: Whoa!

How do we get to that log?

Hellbenders are water specialists,

not great at walking on land.

And we activated by touching a hellbender.

Aviva: So, we need a land power boost.

If we could reactivate with a touch of a land salamander.

Martin: [gasps] Like this guy?

Aviva: Wow!

What kind of salamander is that?

Martin: A tiger salander!

Oh, and the tiger salamander is one fast salamander!

His powers are perfect for a land crossing.

Aviva: How do we know red squirrels won't eat salamanders.

Does a salamander have a defense?

Martin: Yes, tiger salamanders secrete a toxic substance

from their tail and raise it at the predator.

I think that red squirrel will leave us alone.

Aviva: That should work.

Martin/Aviva: Boost salamander land walking powers!

Martin: [chuckles] Oh yeah.

We're moving now!

Chris: [humming] Hey!

There's a butternut seed in the squirrel's cache.

Martin: Psst! Chris, Jimmy!

We're here to rescue you.

Jimmy Z: Awesome!

But watch out for the squirrel.

Martin: Grab on!

Jimmy Z: Chris, you coming?

Chris: Uh, yeah. Be there in a second.

Jimmy Z: Okay...but hurry!

Chris: Hmm.

Martin: Chris!

Alright. Let's go!

Jimmy Z: Yee-haaa!!

Cool salamander suits!

Aviva: Thanks!

[squirrel chittering]

♪♪

Jimmy Z: Huh?! Why is that red squirrel chasing us?

And there's another one!

Martin: Bro, what did you take?

Chris: Uh...nuttin'.

Martin: Uh...what about that butternut under your shirt?

Chris: Oh yeah. I wanted to grow

a butternut tree to climb on.

I only took one!

Jimmy Z: But that's why she's chasing us!

Drop the nut!

Chris: Aw, but they'll eat it!

We need to plant it to grow more endangered butternut trees.

Jimmy Z: Let's get out of here. They're coming!

[squirrel chittering]

Koki: ♪ Hmmhmmm. Yes, power is restored!

♪ [happy humming]

Everything is back in working order.

Uh-oh! Now they really need the Tortuga!

Aviva: [out of breath] One miscalculation.

Tiger salamanders are pretty fast for small amphibians,

but we're no match for red squirrels!

Martin: But because we're amphibious,

we can go somewhere squirrels don't like to,

into the water!

Because, we are salamanders.

We are amphibious amphibians!

Chris: Um, but I think squirrels can swim.

Aviva: You got it going, Koki!

Koki: Yeah! I finally figured it out.

It was those troublemaking squirrels.

[squirrel chittering]

Aviva: We should rename this adventure,

Koki's Tortuga Rescue.

Koki: Thanks guys, but I think I might like Salamander Streaming.

Ooh, there's one!

Martin: A marbled salamander!

Koki's found one!

Koki: Hey, there's another one...with spots!

Chris: A spotted salamander!

Wow! Koki is good at this.

Martin/Chris/Aviva/Jimmy Z: [laughter]

Martin: Yeah.

Koki: Is that a blue spotted salamander?

Martin: Yes, it is.

Oh, I thought I'd never be so lucky to see

a blue spotted salamander!

[emotional]

Aviva: That's three!

Koki wins the Salamander Streaming Adventure!

Martin: Way to go! Chris: Ya-hooo!

Martin: Ya gotta love salamanders.

Chris: Living free and in the wild!

Chris: So salamanders are a really cool group of animals,

with over species around the world.

Martin: The hellbender being one of the

coolest salamanders of all.

Chris: And they're related to another group of animals,

the frogs and the toads.

Martin: Yeah, salamanders, frogs and toads,

they're all amphibians.

But what makes an amphibian, an amphibian?

Amphibians are a group of creatures

that live on land and in the water.

They're cold blooded and they need water

and a moist environment to survive.

And they can breathe through lungs, gills or even their skin.

Chris: And have a look at the sides of this hellbender's body.

There are folds of skin there

and those help the salamander breathe.

The more folds, the more oxygen the can take in.

Martin: Since they breathe through their skin,

it's so important that their watery habitat remains clean.

Hey, we're here at an awesome hellbender stream,

with hellbender expert, Dr. Bill Hopkins,

who has been studying these incredible salamanders

for what, the past years? Bill: Yeah, that's right.

Martin: Wow! So what have you learned in that time?

Like what new things are you figuring out about hellbenders?

Bill: I think one of the coolest things we've learned

is that hellbender dads take care of their babies,

and they take care of them for months.

So we know now that dads hang out

with their babies for like eight months.

They protect them from big predators and they make sure

they're getting all the things, like oxygen

they need from the water.

And the water. You mentioned the water.

Their habitat. These cold streams.

What have you learned about their habitat?

Bill: So hellbenders are in a lot of trouble.

So that's one of the big discoveries,

is that their populations are crashing,

and they need really clean water,

like the water you see here, to survive.

And even though they live underwater, they need trees.

The trees are really, really important

for keeping the water clean.

Martin: Wow! So another reason it's so important

to have healthy forests, to protect hellbenders.

Bill: Absolutely.

Martin/Chris: We love hellbenders.

Martin: And all kinds of salamanders.

Chris: And now it's time for you to go living,

back free and in the wild!
