Chris: [off screen] On the continent of Asia,

in a high-altitude desert

called the Gobi Desert,

lives a small population

of the rare, wild camel.

It's us the Kratt Brothers, I'm Chris...

Martin: I'm Martin and we're here in North America

a half a world away..

Chris: Checking out a special friend

who's a relative of those rare wild camels.

♪♪

Martin/Chris: This is a bactrian camel!

Martin: With that classic camel face.

Which I happen to think is one of the best faces

in the creature world.

Chris: And of course, there's the classic

camel feature, the humps.

Bactrian camels have two humps

and they sit right on her back

like a couple of backpacks.

Martin: Now you might of heard of a camel with one hump.

That's another kind of camel,

the dromedary, the one-humped camel.

Chris: Here's how you remember the difference

between the bactrian...

Martin: ...and the dromedary.

Chris: The bactrian's two humps

are a "B"...

lying down,

"B" for bactrian.

Martin: And the dromedary's one hump

is a "D" lying down,

"D" for dromedary.

Chris: But, no matter which camel you're talking about,

all camels have incredible creature powers

to survive in desert habitats,

places with very little rain.

Martin: Yeah, camel powers are awesome,

and all camels have them,

including the very rare

wild camel of the Gobi Desert.

Chris: Imagine if we could survive

one of the harshest places on Earth.

Martin: Imagine if we had camel powers!

Martin/Chris: What if?

Chris: Backpack the Camel.

[bubbling sound]

Martin/Chris: Wahoooo!

Koki: Ok, bring it in guys!

Aviva: The Amphi-Trek is really one of my favorite

engineering inventions yet.

Chris: It's a great one!

Water reserves all filled up.

Koki: Great work guys!

That should be enough water to last in the desert for weeks!

Aviva: Well, I didn't design the Amphi-Trek for a desert trek,

but it seems like it'll do great.

The feet spread out well, so it doesn't sink in the sand.

Chris: We're all set.

Let the great wild camel search begin!

Jimmy Z: Uh, easiest search ever.

There's one.

My work here is done.

Martin: Not so fast, Jimmy.

That's not a wild camel.

That camel is domestic,

meaning it lives with people.

Like that dog and goat.

Chris: Just like pet dogs came from wild wolves

that started living with people,

camels like that, have lived with people

for thousands of years!

Koki: Why were camels domesticated?

Aviva: Thousands of years ago, people that lived around here

started taming camels for a few reasons.

They use their wool for clothes,

drink their milk,

and they help transport things

because they are strong and great

at surviving in the desert.

Chris: That's right. Deserts are hard places

for any creature to survive in

and camels are one of the few who can take the heat

and survive where there is very little water.

Martin: [laughs] Yeah not me. I'm the opposite.

I'm good in cold weather with plenty of water.

Chris: That's where we're different, bro.

Aviva: [laughs] You're the more camel-like brother.

[giggles]

Chris: Yup. Just call me Camel Chris.

This is an adventure for me.

Because out there, somewhere amongst

the sand and dunes of the Gobi Desert,

are the last few remaining,

truly wild camels

in the entire world.

Martin: And we're going to find them!

Aviva: Let's take the Amphi-Trek.

Martin/Chris: Yaahhhh!!!

Jimmy Z: Wait! Tortuga, engage lock-down mode.

[Tortuga buzzes/humms]

All: Wild Camels here we come!

Donita: Dabio, I've finished another one.

Dabio: Oooo, let me see!

Donita: Ta-Daaa!! A pangolin mandolin.

♪♪

Not very functional for music,

but hits all the right notes

as a fashion accessory.

Dabio: Oooo, harmonious!

Donita: Halt!

Put it with all the others.

[bloop]

Dabio: Your fashion creations from China

will be very popular in Europe.

Donita: Yes, I know.

I feel like Santa Claus in the desert!

And I'm almost done with another one...

Pandal Candles!

Dabio: Oooo, divine.

Donita: Are you sure we're going the right way, Dabio?

Dabio: Yup, Europe that way.

Far across the desert.

Donita: It's too hot!

I'm thirsty!

Dabio: It's a good thing camels have water in their humps.

But um...where is the tap?

Donita: Get the water out of the hump now Dabio.

Dabio: Uh.. ehm..

Maybe there is a button..?

Jimmy Z: Whoa!

Nothing but sand.

Chris: A sea of sand!

Martin: Lots of sand.

Little water.

Chris: That's the desert for ya.

In fact, one of the main characteristics of a desert

is that they get hardly any rain

the entire year.

Less than inches!

Aviva: And another, is they have very few plants and vegetation.

Koki: Plants need water to survive,

so do animals.

That's why there are so few of both.

Martin: Yeah, we need water.

Our bodies are about % water.

You know if you sucked all the water from our bodies,

we'd shrivel up to about the size of a basketball!

Jimmy Z: He brought a basketball to the desert?

Aviva: No comment.

Chris: Water gives life!

And I see no life out there.

Wait! [gasps] Camel!

It's a camel!

And a baby!

[excited chuckle] It's them! It's really them!

Martin: Wild camels.

Come on!

Nice and easy.

Chris: Wild camels in their wild habitat.

Aviva: Wow!

They're amazing.

Chris: Oh, I love camels so much!

They have those awesome two humps.

Martin: Like backpacks!

I'll name you Backpack.

And you have small little humps that are just forming.

Smaller than a backpack.

Knapsack.

I'll name you Knapsack.

Chris: She's so tiny.

That baby was just born...

today!

Martin: Ahh, she's still getting used to her legs.

[chuckles]

But a baby camel can be walking around

less than an hour after they're born.

Not like humans.

We take around a year just to start walking.

Chris: They have to get walking fast,

so they can keep up with the herd.

Koki: But where is the herd?

Chris: Moms sometimes have their babies away from the herd

and then they rejoin it later.

Aviva: That must be where they're going now.

Jimmy Z: Wait up!!

Aviva: They're way down there already!

Koki: Wow, that little girl is fast already.

Chris: No problem.

♪♪ [whoosh]

All: Wahoooooo!!!

Aviva: Sand sledding!

Chris: Uh-oh... I'm losing control...

It's not responding!

All: Aaaahhhh!!

[ka-bam]

[sparking]

Chris: Oh no!

The camels!

Martin: They're gone!

Aviva: Gotta stop the leaks.

Our precious water!

Koki: Aviva, catch!

Aviva: Phew, thanks Koki.

Koki: The Amphi-Trek is a wreck!

It's going to take me a long time to fix.

Chris: We've got to go on foot.

We need to keep up with the camels!

Aviva: But that desert is brutal!

Chris: We'll take lots of water.

Besides, I don't need much.

I'm Camel Chris, remember?

Martin: Oh yeah. Koki, you and Jimmy can catch up

once the Amphi-Trek is fixed.

Koki: Good luck, g*ng. Keep in touch.

Aviva: We will! See you soon!

Martin: [shouting] Camels wait for us!

Chris: Well, we know that we're in the camels' habitat.

Martin: Yeah, the problem is camels are migratory,

and they have big home ranges.

They follow the plant growth and what little rains there are.

Chris: And that bunch of grass there,

that's what they like.

So hopefully they can't be too far.

Aviva: Especially since we're getting low on water.

Martin: Ah! It's even hotter and dryer

out here than I thought.

Aviva: Wait!! Martin: Huh?

Aviva: Just a little.

Ok, that's it.

Martin: I know we gotta ration the precious water,

but that's it...two drops?!!

Aviva: Water is precious.

And this is all we have left.

Martin: Uh-oh. I know humans can only survive

for three days without any water.

Chris: But camels can go days without water.

Two weeks!

Martin: Now would be a good time for camel power.

Chris: You can have my two drops,

I'm Camel Chris, remember?

Martin: Oh yeah, thanks bro.

I'll split it with you, Aviva.

Awww...

Aviva: We'd better head back to the Amphi-Trek,

get more water and regroup.

Chris: Yeah, but which way is the Amphi-Trek anyway?

Martin: Just follow our tracks.

[wind blows]

Aviva: Oh no.

The wind wiped them away.

Martin: What now, Camel Chris?

Jimmy Z: [sighs] Soooooo hot.

Koki: Ohhh, this will take a while,

sand got everywhere.

Jimmy Z: Tell me about it.

Donita: Oh, look Dabio.

It seems like our friends

are having some transportation problems.

Dabio: Oh, how unfortunate.

[mean giggle]

Koki: What are YOU doing out here?

Donita: I'm bringing my fashion wares to market.

Koki: Donita! Let that panda go.

Donita: Now, you know I won't do that.

Dabio! Water...now!

Dabio: Uhh.. I still can't get water

from the camel hump, Donita.

Koki: Water from the camel hump?

A camel's hump doesn't have water, Donita.

It's full of fat.

It's like a backpack of fat.

Donita: Fat?! Eeewww!

I don't want to drink fat!

Jimmy Z: I wouldn't recommend it.

Koki: See, camels eat and drink to build up fat in their humps

and when there's no food,

the fat provides energy and hydration

allowing them to go so long

without food and water.

Dabio: So, we can't get water from here?

Koki: Nooo! Of course not!

Donita: Then give us your water...um

and um...

I'll give you the Pandal Candle.

Koki: Maybe we'll give you some water,

if you give us all the animals you took,

so that we can bring them home.

Donita: Ummmmm..

Hmmmm... NO deal!

Koki: But you need water to survive in the desert!

Dabio: Oh! But we have some.

See?

Koki: [gasps] Our water!

Nooo!

Donita: [laughs]

[to Dabio] And they can't bother us

because their silly machine is broken.

Dabio: Water Donita?

Donita: [sluuurp]

Delicious!

[evil laugh]

Martin: [grunting/gasping]

I wish we had some water left.

Chris: I'm not Camel Chris.

I'm only human after all.

Aviva: [heavy breathing]

Uff! [bam]

Chris: Uuu-uh!

[thud]

I can't... go anymore...

without water.

Ok..ok..a little further...

It's...[gasps]

Knapsack!

Martin: Backpack!

Aviva: Are we seeing things?

Chris: No...it's really them!!

Martin: They want us to follow them.

Marting: [chuckles] Chris/Martin/Aviva: Water!!

Martin: You saved us!

[sluuurp]

Blah!

Chris/Martin/Aviva: Yukkkk!!!

Aviva: It's salty.

Martin: Humans can't drink salt water.

It's worse for us than not drinking at all!

Chris: But wild camels can do it!

They're the only land mammal in the world

that has the creature power

to survive drinking salt water.

Martin: Never fear!

I didn't only bring a basketball.

I also brought...

The Camel Purificator .

It removes salt from the water.

[pumping sound]

[spraying sound]

Ahhhh!!

Fresh water!

Not salty.

[spraying sound]

[spraying sound]

Chris/Aviva: Ahhhhh!!!

Water is life!

Chris: [gasps] The herd!

We did it!

We found the herd of wild camels!

Aviva: Nice to meet your whole family, Knapsack.

Martin: These herds can be about to camels,

and camels are so cool looking.

What's your favorite camel feature, Chris?

Chris: Oh, I love their faces!

With the long eyelashes to keep sand out of their eyes.

And the special noses that conserve water

by increasing condensation.

Martin: I love their woolly necks.

Winter can be cold in the Gobi Desert.

They get a new coat in October or November.

Aviva: Keep the info coming brothers!

I'm incorporating it all into the Creature Power disc!

Chris: Got it! Camel Chris on the way.

Insert Camel Power Disc...

And activate wild camel power!

I feel like a wild camel.

I'm the master of the desert.

Complete with...

No humps?!... Huh?!

Aviva: Uh-oh.

That's not supposed to happen.

Martin: The camel creature power suit is missing

the most important feature.

The backpack of fat!

Aviva: Guys...look!

Chris: Food! Nutrition! Water!

That's it!

Maybe if I eat and drink,

I'll build up the fat reserves in the humps.

Knapsack, you're a genius.

Martin: Of course.

That's what camels have to do.

♪♪

Chris: [gulp]

[spraying/gurgling sound]

Aviva: Keep eating, Chris.

Build up those reserves for desert life!

[chomp-chomp]

Chris: They're growing!

♪♪

Martin: [chuckles] Now that's camel power!

Chris: Yes, finally, I'm Camel Chris!

I'm ready for the desert now!

Now I understand why camel's store their fat in a hump

and not all over their bodies.

If the fat was all over,

like it is in people and most animals,

it would act as insulation

and overheat the camel in the desert.

But the fat doesn't do that

if you keep it in a nice little

clump or two on your back.

Martin: A double backpack of food and water.

[chuckles] So camel cool.

Hey, and I named you well Backpack.

[buzzing]

Donita: Oh yes!

I got a few, Dabio!

Aviva: Donita!! Stop!

Martin: Let those camels go, Donita.

They're wild, not domesticated like these ones.

Donita: Even better.

The rarer the animal,

the more valuable the animal fashion.

Load up the little one, Dabio.

That's all we have room for anyway.

Dabio: Deactivate. [chuckles]

Donita: Good, no more pesky powers.

And.. release!

Oh, and do bundle up tonight.

Evenings can be chilly in the desert.

Goodbye!

Chris: Nooooo!!! Stop!!!

[baby camel calling]

[angry camel calling]

Martin: She's running after Knapsack!!

♪♪ [angry camel calling]

Chris: Wait, Backpack!

We gotta try to keep up with them!

♪♪

[brrr] Winter in the Gobi desert

can get well below freezing.

And even snow!

Aviva: Amazing! Makes sense they grow a woolly coat in winter.

Martin: Might as well use the wool hat and scarf

Donita gave us.

Chris: Hey, I get the scarf.

Martin: No way, bro!

Martin/Chris: [struggling]

Come on, hey!

Aviva: Guys! The hat!

The scarf!

Donita saved us!

Martin/Chris: Huh?!

Aviva: Those are made of camel hair!

That's one of the reasons people domesticated camels, remember?

Martin: [chuckles]

So, we can use this to activate camel powers!

Aviva: Yup.

And I made another disc.

Martin: Oh yeah, thanks Aviva!

Insert Camel Power Disc!

Chris: Touch camel hair, and..

Martin/Chris: ...activate Camel Power!

Chris: Camel Chris is back!

Hop on.

Hey bro, this weather is great right?

Martin: Oh yeah, degrees

and I'm not hot at all!

Oh, and I love these feet.

They spread out on the sand,

so we don't even sink in much.

Chris: Accessing hump for energy and hydration.

Aviva: Still plenty stored away in that hump, % full.

Chris: Wow, at this rate, we have a real chance

of catching Donita!

Martin: Follow those tracks!

Donita: Cucumber water or mango water, Dabio?

Dabio: Cucumber water please.

Very fashionable water dispenser, Donita.

Aviva: [whispers] Shhh. This is a creature rescue.

Chris: We'll take over.

You go join Aviva, ok?

♪♪

Aviva: Now you guys come with me.

Donita: Oooo, the mango water is delicious.

Chris: It's good you have lots of water in the desert.

Donita: Oh yes.

That's why we have it.

Martin: But where did you get it?

Donita: We stole it, how else?

Chris: Stealing is bad, Donita.

Dabio: Uh, those are very smart talking camels.

Donita: Talking camels?

There's no such thing as talking camels!

Chris: Oh hi. Martin: How you doin'?

Donita: What!? It's you?!

Martin: Yeah, we took our water back.

Aviva: Hey!!

Donita: Aaah!

Aviva: We took the animals you stole too.

Donita: Nooooo!! The pandas!

The pangolins! The pheasants!

They're mine!

Martin: No, they're not.

Chris: They belong in their homes,

living free and in the wild.

Martin: And we'll get you back to where you belong too.

Chris: Hey Knapsack, a little help?

Martin: Enjoy the ride! Dabio: Aaaaaah!

Donita: Forget the whole Santa Claus desert thing.

I don't like this dry sandy place anywayyyyyyyyy!!!

Chris: Ha-ha! Civilization is a much better place for Donita.

[chuckles]

[Knapsack purrs]

Martin: It's Backpack!

[camel calling]

Chris: Aw, mom and baby reunited.

Martin: Now let's get everybody else home too.

Chris: Mission accomplished.

We found the last of the wild camels.

Aviva: And we learned a lot about deserts

and the importance of water for life.

Chris: Camel Chris says,

"Always be prepared with plenty of water".

Martin: And camel power really helped us survive

in the harsh desert.

Jimmy Z: And save lots of creatures too.

These domestic camels have great homes with nice families.

Aviva: Camels really are masters of the desert.

Martin: With only a few very special ones left.

Aviva: Bye wild camels!

Chris: Living free and in the wild!

Martin: So, the camel is a creature

very adapted to living in deserts,

places with lots of sand,

not much water

and not much vegetation either.

Chris: So, let's take a close look at the special features

and creature powers that help a camel survive

in its desert habitat.

Martin: Check out the camel's long legs.

These leg's keep the camel's body off of the hot sand

and they're good for travelling great distances

when they're searching for food or water.

Check out the camel's feet.

Like big pancakes with two toes,

great for walking on the sand,

so the camel doesn't sink in.

Chris: Camels love to eat vegetation,

look at how their lips work.

So many muscles in their lips,

they can move them so well to grab things,

and the middle of the lip is split.

That gives them a little extra control.

Look at those eyelashes,

long and thick.

If a desert storm whips up,

you want to protect your eyes

from getting sand in your face.

Same thing with the nose.

Look at these nostrils.

They're like long and slit,

not like ours, round and opened,

and they can close their nostrils,

so they don't get sand up their nose.

Martin: Believe it or not, it can get very cold

in the bactrian camel's desert habitat, snow even,

so bactrian camels are covered in this thick fur.

However, when it gets hot,

they have to get rid of it.

A camel sheds.

And we can help this camel

get rid of some of that fur

with a rake.

How does that feel? Is that good?

Chris: These humps are where the camel's real creature power is.

The humps are full of fat

and that fat can metabolize into energy and water.

And that's how the camel can go for so long in the desert

without water or food.

Martin: From her toes to the tip of her nose,

a camel is a creature

packed with features

that give her creature powers

to survive in the desert.

Chris: Keep on creature adventuring!
