It's Mother's Day here in Qyah,

Dad and I are throwing a big surprise party
for Shahan, my mom, Layla.
While Dad is cooking and decorating,
Shahan and I will be all the way over here
in Shageluk delivering bison collars to Professor Locklear.
LAYLA [sing-songy]: Molly, you ready?

WALTER: Great.
It only takes about an hour and a half to fly to Shageluk.
I'm gonna need a little more time to bake the cake

She says it's a big white bird that talks.
Whoa. That's so cool!
I know!
But I told her there aren't any
big white talking birds in Alaska.
I wouldn't be so sure of that.
Long ago, our elders say that the Raven used to be white.
Really?
Dad said there might be a traditional story
about a white bird!
The story goes that long ago,
a Chief lived in a house by a river.
The Chief owned three cedar bentwood boxes.
One contained the moon, one held the stars,
and the last held the sun.
Raven saw the Chief's treasures and wanted them for himself.
Now, back then, Raven was a beautiful
shimmering white color.
Raven really wanted the sun.
So, being the trickster that he is,
he snuck into the man's house.
He opened the first box,
but it was the moon, not the sun.
So, Raven tossed it out the window.
Then, Raven opened the second box,
and out came all the stars.
Finally, Raven opened the third box,
and there was the sun.
But before Raven could take off with it, the Chief caught him.
The Chief closed the window, so Raven couldn't escape.
Raven flew up the chimney instead.
And Raven has been black ever since.
Wow! What a great story!
Oh, but Trini says her bird friend is still white,
and it talks.
Ravens are pretty smart birds, you know.
I've heard of them learning how to speak.
