For drag.
And the local drag queen, god
Rest her soul, miss yovanna, she
Said to me, you have something.
I want you to come back and do
My amateur show the next night.
And baby, shangela was born.
[Indistinct] shangela!
She is a blast.
I love her.
She's whatever you said without
The f-word but the other f-word
Was "fierce."
Give her some love.
Shangela!
[Cheers and applause]
Shangela: the next thing you
Know, I was hosting a drag show
And that's what led to me being
Cast on "rupaul's drag race."
I had only done drag ten times
Total in my life when the
Producer of "drag race" came and
Said, you've got something.
You should audition for our
Show.
I quit my job, rolled out and I
Was like, I'm about to go to
"Drag race," get this 20 grand
And make all my dreams come
True.
Hello, somebody.
Nicole: hello.
Shangela: hi.
Nicole: I'm nicole.
Shangela: hi, nicole, I'm
Shangela.
Nicole: nice to meet you.
Shangela: nice to meet you.
Well in two days, I was the
First one voted off.
And I was back at the house.
Unemployed in total shock.
Yeah, you know, it's pretty much
Come down to me and all these
Costumes and wigs now.
Just sitting up in this house.
I was like whoa, whoa, whoa,
Whoa, whoa.
I was supposed to win.
I'm a winner.
I'm fabulous.
And I remember thinking, did I
Just ruin my life?
Like, I quit my job for this?
Do I go back to that job and
Tell them like, just kidding?
But I knew that I loved drag, so
I was like, you know what?
I'm gonna take all those skills
That I have that I've been using
For other people and I'm gonna
Put it into my career.
Give it up one more time for
Shangela!
Shangela: I decided I'm gonna
Go after this dream of
Performing on stage.
Because it's what I love so much
Much.
I started calling clubs myself
Pretending to be like an agent.
Like, "you want to book
Shangela?
She's amazing, blah, blah,
Blah."
And they booked me.
And I was making a name for
Myself.
Because of that, when season
Three came around, the producer
Of "drag race" said, we want you
To come back.
Let me tell you something, baby.
They call me the post-modern
Pimp h*.
Yes, I'm still a pimp, but I'm
Also my own h*.
Eureka: my life changed
Completely when I got on
"Rupaul's drag race."
And it put me in a
Place where people started
Respecting my art form.
The winner of "rupaul's drag
Race" is bob the drag queen.
[Cheers and applause]
Bob: the way I love this
Scepter, you would think it was
Made of actual diamonds.
It just felt super validating to
Always see something special in
Yourself and then to have
Someone that you admire say it
Is special.
It was like an amalgamation of
Years and years of work to
Finally be crowned one of the
Best.
It is my great pleasure to
Introduce shangela!
[Cheers and applause]
Shangela: "rupaul's
Drag race" really me the
Confidence to grow into who
Shangela was.
And one thing about miss
Shangela, it was always the high
Energy, glam damn, pop drop,
Death drop type of performance,
Okay?
I was in new york city for
Halloween and I remember landing
On my tibia and fibula bones and
Snapping them in my right leg.
I had to literally be rolled out
Of the club on a gurney.
And I remember going to the
Hospital.
The next day, when I woke up in
That hospital bed, I looked down
At my leg and thought, I was
Gonna have to change my entire
Being.
I felt helpless in that moment.
I thought I ruined my drag
Career.
And my mom was with me the
Entire three weeks that I was in
The hospital.
And I remember she told me, you
Will survive this.
We're a family of survivors.
I pushed myself to go through
That rehab 110%, because I was
Not going to let this one moment
To find me.
Finally I was able to come back
On stage again.
I was like oh, miss
Shangie, can't nothing hold me
Down.
I came back from a broken leg.
Everything that I've been
Through has taught me that god
And the universe don't give us
Anything we can't handle.
We just have to choose to handle
It.
Just like beyonce has said, I'm
A survivor.
