Ms. Hughes: No, my van has great big windows

that let cool breezes in.

Al: Maureen, it is so good to see you.

Ms. Hughes: Hey, Curly!

Who's Curly?

Ms. Hughes: Your Dad.

That was our nickname for him

back in high school when he had

lots of hair.

Al: [laughing] I sure did!

Al: Mo and I are old classmates.

She used to beat me in

races on the school track.

Dot: It's so lovely

now that Al's moved back.

Both of you living in the same neighborhood you grew up in.

fall from the sky.

Preparation....

to protect us. Is important when you're outdoors

as often as we are.

Remember how this helmet

protected me from the sun?

so it stays nice and dry in there.

Based on my weather readings,

there are still a lot of clouds

and high humidity,

so I wouldn't be surprised

if there is more rain tomorrow.

Al: Excellent work, Lily.

Lily: [laughing]

Lily: Thanks, Dad.

Benny: More rain?

Benny: That means if we want to be prepared

for the weather, we need

to wear our raincoats again.

Benny: I wonder where Ms. Hughes is?

Cumulus: [barking]

So I better put on my raincoat.

with lots more humidity

and clouds in the sky.

I wonder if it's gonna rain again.

Benny: This looks like another job for

super mail carrier Benny!

Cumulus: [barks]

Benny: Whoa!

Lily: Come on, Benny.

Let's go inside.

Al: Yipe!

Corky: Dad, are you okay?

Al: [laughs nervously]

Thunder always startles me.

No worries.

All: [laughs]

Benny: What is that stuff?

Lily: Oh, I know!

Its another form of precipitation.

Lily: Hail is pieces of ice which fall

out of thunderstorm clouds.

I've read all about hail,

but I've never actually seen it before.

Benny: But it's too warm out for ice.

Al: Actually, Benny, it isn't.

Lily, can you please pass me your tracker

tablet for a minute?

See, up in the clouds,

the air is much colder than it is down here.

Benny: Like way up high on mountains?

Al: That's right. Even colder.

Al: And the cool temperatures up there

freezes the water droplets into ice.

Then they fall down to earth

and make a lot of noise.

Al: [nervous outburst]

Al: [laughs] Anyways, it's

always best to stay indoors when it's hailing.

What about Ms. Hughes?

Will she be okay?

Al: I'm sure she's prepared, Benny.

Besides, hail storms usually last

for just a few minutes.

Lily: Before they melt

I want to see what hailstones

look like up close.

Benny: Dad, is it safe to go out?

Al: Absolutely, Benny.

It looks like the hail storms over

and we haven't heard

thunder for a while.

I'm gonna wear my helmet again

just in case.

Lily: Uh?

Look how big this hailstone is.

Lily: Whoa!

They are very cool looking.

Al: [chuckles] Actually...

Colder than cool.

They're frozen.

Lily: [laughs]

these zig zag thingies underneath.

Al: Those are called treads, Benny.

Al: They're on your boots to help

you get a grip on the ice

to keep you from slipping and sliding.

They're on there to protect you.

Benny: Oh!

Benny: We should also protect this card I made for Ms. Hughes.

I don't want it to get ruined

by precipitation.

Al: Let's put it in a plastic box

with the cookies.

That'll protect it.

Benny: It's real quiet today, Dad.

Al: But it's kind of nice, isn't it?

When it snows a lot, people often

like to stay home all warm and toasty.

Benny: I think it's more fun to go out.

I love snow.

Al: [laughs]

Benny: I also love

the sound snow makes

when I walk on it.

Benny: Crunch, crunch, crunch.

These tread thingies

work great.

Al: Good thing we prepared so well.

You can prepare for rain

by wearing a raincoat and rubber boots.

That way, your body and feet

wont get all wet.

And when it snows,

you also want to stay

warm and dry.

Wear a real warm coat.

Benny: And if you wear boots with treads,

they'll grip the ice

so you don't slip.

And don't go out in a hailstorm.

Those ice ba*ls can get very big.

Ms. Hughes: Exactly.

Much safer to stay inside

until the storm is over.
