Lily: No Snow Snow Day.

Hello, everybody.

Al Hunter here

to bring you tonight's exciting forecast

for tomorrow's weather.

The big news is that

tomorrow, we will expect

to see our first

snowstorm of the winter season.

Now, for many of you,

snow marks the beginning of all your winter fun.

Here to comment on that is my daughter, Lily Hunter

Al: Lily?

Hello, everybody.

Lily Hunter here.

We all know that here

where we live we have four seasons.

Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter

Each season has things that make it special and fun.

Lily: In spring, rain showers bring us

lots of beautiful rainbows.

In summer,

we love to have a picnic by the lake.

And in fall,

it's so exciting to go to the park

and look at all the leaves when they turn

pretty colors.

But what about winter?

It's special because it's the only one that brings us snow

[laughing]

So, what are the

things we like about snow?

Dot: In the snow,

I get to use my snowshoes.

And we can all zoom down a hill on our sleds.

When there's snow, I can make a snowman or a snow dragon.

There are lots of things we can when there's snow on the ground,

but always remember, it's very cold outside when it snows.

So bundle up to stay warm.

Lily: A nice cap and a good winter coat will keep you warm.

Dot: Wearing a scarf is a smart idea.

Corky: Don't forget boots to keep your feet dry.

And you should use gloves to keep your hands warm.

Lily: As you can see, we Hunters, are all set to have fun

with the winter snow, which we hope to see lots of tomorrow.

Al: So, get ready everybody, because it looks like

we have a whopper of a snowstorm headed our way.

It's always best to be prepared for the weather

so you can enjoy it.

Just a couple more seconds

But now, I want to draw a snow dragon right behind you.

[barks]

Benny: Almost done.

Corky: Folks,

as you can see here at the Hunter household,

we're getting ready for the snowstorm tomorrow.

And Benny,

he's already making plans for what he's going to do

when all that snow falls.

Hey, Cumie!

Look! I drew you standing next to a big

snow dragon.

Well, I don't know if you can play

with the snow dragon tomorrow,

but you can definitely play in the snow.

[barking]

What's got that puppy so excited?

Cumie's excited to play in the snow, too.

Benny just drew a picture to celebrate our

first big snowstorm we're expecting.

Look Dad, when it snows,

I'm going to go sledding with Cumie,

and we're going to build a snow dragon.

Oh! Nice drawing, Benny.

Al: That snow dragon looks amazing.

Dot: Upload almost done.

Dot: There.

for all our Weather Hunters weathercast fans.

I hope they have warm pajamas tonight.

Well, the weather coming in from the west tonight

may be pretty cold.

Lily: Mom, now that you finished the weathercast,

can you help me with my homework

for school tomorrow?

Dot: Of course.

[phone dings]

Just a second, honey.

Well, well.

Lily: What is it, Mom?

Dot: Just got a text.

School is closed tomorrow.

Lily: I'll do my homework anyway, just to have it done.

Let me guess.

It's going to be a snow day.

Lily: Oh wow! Our first snow day this year. Yay!

Corky: Yes, I've been wanting to do a snow day movie.

Benny: I know Sunday, Monday, Tuesday,

Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

But what's snow day?

[chuckles]

A snow day, son, is when school's been called off

because a whole lot of snow is expected,

and it could be hard for everyone to get to school safely

How likely is it, Al?

Well, based on satellite pictures

of the clouds rolling in

I'd say pretty likely.

But my class just got new crayons,

and I was going to draw all the new colors.

Corky: Benny,

think of the art projects you can do in the snow

Benny: Like what?

Corky: You can build a snowman or a snow dragon,

like you said you wanted to.

Benny: Yay!

[barking]

That'll be fun.

Won't it, Cumie?

[barking]

Lily: Hey, Mom, does a snow day

mean you can show me how to use the new snowshoes

I got for my birthday?

Well, of course, Lily. I so remember my first snowshoes

Dot: My mother gave them to me and my brother.

She says it's the best way to ge exercise during the winter time.

It's hard at first, but loads of fun.

Lily: I'm just so excited to finally try them tomorrow.

[gasp]

Dot: We'll do it together.

I still have mine from when I was in college.

A snow day, my new snowshoes.

I can't wait!

Dot: Everything okay, Al?

Al: Well, Dot, this storm system has just gotten more interesting

It's like I always say,

Al/Dot: Keep your eye on the sky

Dot: Yes, I know, dear, but how about

putting your head on your pillow

[chuckles]

Well, Dot, that's probably a good idea.

Lily: I can't wait to try snowshoeing.

Benny: I'm going to make the biggest snow dragon ever.

Corky: I'm gonna sled all day long.

This is going to be so much fun.

Corky/Lily/Benny: Yay! Whoo-hoo!

Corky: Yes!

Whoa!

Benny: Where's all the snow?

Lily: That's so strange.

Snow is falling, but there's no snow on

the ground.

Corky: I've zoomed in with my camera,

but I don't see any snow sticking to the ground either.

Benny: No snow? But it's a snow day.

How could it be a no snow, snow day?

Corky: Hm.

I can see snow coming down, but it looks like it's disappearing.

The ground is just wet.

Where are the piles of snow?

My snow day movie is not going to have enough snow in it.

Benny: And I can't make a snow dragon.

Lily: And I can't use my new snowshoes.

Hm.

I wonder where the snow is going?

Fascinating.

Corky: I know that look.

We're going to have another Weather Hunters'

mystery investigation.

The snow fell from the sky soft and white,

and then mysteriously,

dun dun dun.

It vanished.

Where did it go?

Was it abducted by aliens?

Did it travel through a portal to another dimension?

Stay tuned as Lily Hunter, weather detective,

investigates the case of the disappearing snow.

Hm, I want to take a closer look

Lily: Oh, I see.

The snowflakes aren't disappearing.

They're melting.

But why?

Hm.

I wonder if that's what's happening

when the snow hits the ground?

Flex-Specs, activate.

Lily: Magnify.

Looks like the snow

is melting on the ground, too.

Lily: Hm.

No snow on the ground.

Well, there was a possibility this might happen.

I hope the kids aren't too disappointed.

Is that what you saw on the

updated satellite images last night?

I always say keep your eye on the sky, but maybe I should

add keep your eye on the ground, too

[door closes]

The snow's falling, but then it just melts away.

Oh, honey, I'm sorry.

Another way to say it is the snow's not accumulating

on the ground.

What's that word?

Accumulating.

Accumulating?

Al: It's a word meteorologists use. Accumulating.

It means the snow is piling up.

Lily: Well, since the snow is not accumulating,

we should call it a no snow, snow day.

[chuckles]

That's catchy.

Thanks, Mom. Benny thought up that name.

Lily: But what I want to know is,

why isn't the snow accumulating?

When the snow fell on my hand, it melted there too.

But I don't know why.

Uh-huh. You're getting warmer.

Hm.

That sounds like a hint.

I have an idea.

Benny: Lily, what are you doing?

Lily: I'm going to measure the temperature of

the ground with my infrared thermometer.

Corky: Lily Hunter, weather detective, is on the case,

and she seems to have an idea why the snow was melting.

And now, Lily is going to test her idea right in

front of our very eyes.

Lily: The ground temperature is °F.

Very interesting.

Ooh. Lily Hunter thinks it's very interesting.

Benny: What's interesting?

LIly: Okay, listen to this.

When we woke up this morning, ready to have fun in the snow,

on the ground, there was no snow.

Benny: But look!

Lily: Yes, it is snowing,

and snowflakes are falling everywhere.

But the snow is not accumulating

Accumulating?

What does that mean?

Lily: It means it's not piling up.

Benny: Yeah, and I can't have fun in it

or build a snowman or a snow dragon,

if there aren't piles of snow.

So, there you have it, folks.

It's a mystery.

It's snowing, but as soon as it the ground, it disappears.

Lily: Not exactly.

Corky: What do you mean?

Lily: Here, let me show you on my tracker tablet.

[beep]

Lily: See?

Snow is falling, and it's not accumulating.

It's melting into very tiny drops of water.

Corky: Oh, I get it.

Lily Hunter, you just measured the ground temperature at °F.

What does that tell you?

Well, water has to be degrees to freeze and turn into snow.

But my thermometer tells me that the ground temperature is

warmer than degrees.

And that's why the snow is melting.

It's not staying frozen.

And so it's not accumulating.

Benny: So, it's not piling up?

Lily: That's right Benny,

Benny: Can you use the thermomet

to measure the temperature of my hand?

Lily: Sorry, Benny.

Mom said not to point an infrared thermometer

at a person or animal.

to be safe.

Benny: Oh, okay.

This just in. A special safety warning about

infrared thermometers

Never, I repeat, never point them at people or animals.

It's not safe.

Benny: Oh, try measuring the temperature of the Vansformer.

Lily: Okay. Come on.

Corky: Lily Hunter is about to point her infrared thermometer

at the Vansformer.

Let's see what the thermometer says about how hot or cold

the Vansformer is.

Lily: degrees.

Benny: Hm. Still warmer than freezing, right?

Lily: That's right,

which is why there's no snow

accumulating on the Vansformer, either.

Benny: What about the tree?

Lily: Hm.

LIly: The tree is

degrees.

No snow accumulating on it either.

Benny: What about the driveway?

Lily: Guess what?

Corky: degrees?

Lily: That's right.

Benny: So, even warmer.

Corky: The ground and everything

on the ground is warmer than the air temperature.

which has to be degrees or below because it's snowing.

Lily: I think I figured out why the snow isn't accumulating.

Lily: The ground temperature is warmer than freezing,

so it's too warm for the snow to accumulate.

The ground is melting the snow.

Benny: Lily, you're so smart.

Lily: Thanks, Benny.

Al: That's excellent reasoning, Lily, and I'm glad you got

Lily's investigation on video, Corky.

Dot: Yes!

It will make a great Weather Hunters' weathercast.

The great no snow, snow day.

[laughing]

Al: So, the snow falls on

the warmer ground, and it doesn't-

Corky/Benny/Lily: Accumulate!

That's right.

Benny: But, Dad, when can I make my snow dragon?

Al: I'm not sure.

Lily: Dad, where are they going

with the skis on the roof like that?

Al: It looks like they're going to the mountains

to go skiing

Lily: How can that be?

There's no snow on the ground.

Flex-Specs, activate.

Lily: Hm.

Why is it that there's no snow down here?

Zoom in.

But the snow is accumulating up there on the mountain.

Al: Maybe we should look it “up.”

[laughs]

Corky: In a strange twist of events on this no snow,

snow day,

it turns out, there is snow up on that mountain.

And knowing Lily Hunter, weather detective,

she'll stop at nothing until she understands why.

Dot: How far is the mountaintop?

Al: Far? Nothing's too far

when you have this!

Looks like it's time for a Vansformation!

[beep]

♪ music ♪

Corky: Ooh, there's a slope

I want to sled down and take video as I do it.

But, folks, as beautiful as the scenery down there is,

we must remember our main investigation while we are here.

Corky: The Hunter family has discovered

a mystery within a mystery

Corky: Why is snow accumulating way up on the mountaintop,

but not on the ground far below?

Corky: Can our determined detective

get to the bottom of this,

and will she ever get to try her new snowshoes?

Benny: Those look like skateboards without wheels.

[laughing]

Lily: Look at all the snow.

I wonder how cold the ground is up here on the mountain?

What are you doing, Lily?

I'm pulling up the outdoor air temperature thermometer

so we can see what the air temperature is up here.

[beep]

Corky: What's it telling you?

Lily: You can see here,

we're getting higher up the mountain.

It's getting colder the higher we go.

And it keeps getting colder.

Lily: Look, the air temperature is up degrees now,

and now it is degrees.

And now it's down to degrees.

Benny: What does that mean, Lily

Corky: I know. The higher we fly, the colder it gets.

I bet the ground temperature up here is colder than degree

Let's see if I'm right.

Lily: I'll pull up the infrared sensing thermometer

to check the ground temperature.

The temperature of the ground is degrees.

That's below freezing.

So, that's why there's snow on the ground here?

I think so because the air is colder the higher we go.

The ground on the mountains are colder too.

Since the ground temperature's below freezing,

the snow can-

Benny: Accumulate.

Lily: Exactly.

[swoosh]

Al: I think this looks like a good spot.

Look, Benny.

Benny: Finally, a snowy snow day

[barking]

[laughing]

Al: Okay, let's check out this fresh snow.

Putting on these snowshoes feels like being a kid again.

Our intrepid outdoorswoman braves the elements to show her

family her skills.

Corky: What are you doing, Lily?

Lily: Now, that we're up here, I'm going to double check the gr

I'm going to double check the ground

temperature with my infrared thermometer

from my weather kit.

Corky: And we're back with Lily and her

amazing infrared thermometer,

checking out some temperature readings

Will Lily's theory prove correct

Will the ground temperature be colder up here,

as she predicted? We'll be the first to find out.

Lily: Ah-ha!

Al: What did you find out, Lily?

Dot: I can't wait to hear.

Lily: Well, way up here, high up in the mountains,

everything is colder than down at our house,

and the ground temperature is below freezing, too.

That's why the snow is accumulating.

The mystery of the no snow, snow day is solved.

Al: Congratulations, Lily.

You figured it out.

Dot: Like a true Weather Hunter.

Benny: Let's play!

[chuckles]

[barking]

Dot: Lily, I can't wait for you to

try out your beautiful-

Lily: Snowshoes!

These should help me from sinking.

[laughing]

Al: Nice dragon, Benny!

Benny: Thanks! He's all done.

[barking]

And Cumie helped me make him.

Al: Now, let me show you some more snow art.

Let's make

[laughs]

I want to make one.

[thud]

Benny: Yay!

[barking]

Corky: It's “snow” wonder everybody loves a snow day.

“Snow” wonder?

Did I hear someone besides me tell a dad-joke?

[laughing]

I guess you did.

Lily: How exactly do these work?

Dot: Just walk like this.

You'll do fine.

Hey! They work.

I'm staying on top of the snow and not falling in. Yay!

Think of it like having duck fee

Lily: Quack, quack, quack.

Dot: Quack, quack, quack, quack.

[laughing]

[barking]

[laughing]

Lily: I think Cumie needs snowshoes, too.

[laughing]

Dot: Oh, Cumie.

Corky: There you have it, folks.

Another Corky's weird weather mystery solved.

We discovered that the ground needs to be below freezing for

snow to accumulate.

Corky: We solved a weather mystery.

Corky: We finally found snow,

and we made snow art and used snowshoes.

Corky: All in all, we had a very cool day.

This is Weather Hunter Corky saying,

whatever the weather, we're in it together.

Lily: Yeah! Whoo-hoo!

Benny: Yay!

Lily: That was great, Corky.

Thanks, Mom and Dad.

That was the best no snow, snow day

we could have ever dreamed of.

And we sure did leave our mark on that mountain.
