01x06 - Civil w*r Gold

Post by bunniefuu »

Narrator: On beyond oak island...

Rick: Sometimes the quest

for treasure retells history.

Warren: There's tens
of billions of dollars

of buried civil w*r gold.

Jesse james,
who was the field commander

of the knights of the golden
circle, buried tons of gold.

Nelson: He was financing the kgc,
and, ultimately,

a second civil w*r.

Morgan: Ciphered messages

- have been found in utah.
- Warren: That is

the ultimate jesse
james signature.

Matty: I'm convinced
there's something here.

- Warren: Look at that.
- That's a noose!

Warren: It's a warning to those

who mess with the treasure.

- Did you guys see that truck?
- Holly: You don't know

if you're being watched.

All the while we
were growing up,

my brother and I were fascinated

with finding treasure.

Rick: Pirate treasure,

cursed treasure.

Civil w*r gold.

-(laughter) -Since then,
our work on oak island

has shown us there's
a world of mysteries...

- Whoa.
- ...Waiting to be explored.

Rick: So, we like to reach
out to other treasure hunters.

X marks the spot,
right there. Brilliant.

-Marty: We want to hear their stories...
-That's right.

- ...And share our insights.
- "ill-gotten gains."

- rick: And who knows...
- Gary: I got it.

...Maybe we can help
them with their search.

Marty: Not only in america.

Wow. That is gold.

- Rick: But all over the world.
- Yeah!

Marty: Beyond oak island.

Marty: It occurs to me that...

Almost all,
maybe all of these great treasure stories,

have to do with
times of upheaval.

You know,
when somebody is invading somebody else,

and somebody has to flee.

The fall of the roman empire,
and all the stuff

that gets shifted around then.

And that's probably why
it's so significant to history.

Because almost by definition,

a great treasure is
going to be associated

with a great
upheaval of some sort.

Yeah, sometimes history
drives the-the quest for treasure,

and sometimes the quest

-(door opens) -for treasure,
uh, retells history.

- Fellas.
- Marty: Hey! Hey, matty.

- (laughing) - return
of the blakemeister.

Ah, it's good to be here.

- Whatcha got?
- Whew! I don't want

to interrupt oak business,
but I just got off the phone,

very interesting call.

Someone wants
to talk to you guys.

Have you guys heard
of warren getler?

He wrote a book
called rebel gold.

Oh, yeah,
I am familiar with this guy.

'cause not only
did I read that book,

alex met him,
because we were doing our own search

for civil w*r gold at one time.

Isn't his theory that at
the end of the civil w*r

gold was stashed here and there for,
you know,

perhaps supporting the south,
which was gonna be defeated

but could rise again?

Yeah, I am familiar with that.

Hey, talk about upheaval again,

we were talking about upheaval
when you came in, and that,

you know,
that's often the source of-of treasures.

Well,
you can't get a bigger upheaval than that,

in the history of the united states,
anyway.

I mean, the conflict between
the north and the south was,

I mean, for this country,
it was traumatic.

(a*tillery fire)

narrator: April 1865.

The american civil
w*r rages to an end.

The south lies in ruins

and its army on
the brink of collapse.

As federal troops close in

on the confederate
capital of richmond,

the rebel government
abandons the city.

Frazier: When
richmond is evacuated,

clearly,
you're gonna take two things:

One is the government archives,

so that you can keep
the government running,

and the other is the treasury,

so that you can
keep the w*r going.

Narrator: Shortly before
midnight on April 2,

a battered old confederate train
departed south from richmond

toward danville, virginia,
140 miles away.

It carried confederate
president jefferson davis

and several members
of his cabinet.

- (whistle blowing)
- Moments later,

a second train left richmond,

the so-called "treasure train,"

which,
according to historical records,

contained the remaining gold,
silver and jewelry

in the confederate treasury.

In total, in 1865 dollars,

the value would have been
around a million dollars.

If you translate that
to modern values,

you're dealing with
something between $16 million

to $30 million.

Jefferson davis was unwilling
to admit that the w*r was over,

the confederacy was dead.

He hoped to escape to texas,

where the confederacy
was still strong.

Or barring that,
perhaps escape to mexico,

cuba or even to England.

Frazier: One of the things
you have to understand

about the fall of
the confederacy is,

the yankees are closing in,

(laughs): And they're
closing in from the north,

they're closing
in from the south,

so these trains are
not gonna get very far.

So then,
they have to take these precious cargoes

and put them on the wagons.

And they're slow,
they're cumbersome.

Jefferson davis and
his party finally say:

"treasury or no treasury,
we got to get away."

so they leave all the heavy,
cumbersome stuff behind

and make it all the way to irwinville,
georgia.

Narrator: In irwinville,

union troops quickly
surrounded davis's camp.

- (g*nf*re) - Shots rang out.

In the chaos that followed...

Davis covered himself with
a shawl to avoid recognition.

It didn't work.

Davis and his entourage
were taken into custody.

But the confederate treasury
was nowhere to be found.

When davis was found,
he had nothing on him at all.

There were a few
dollars here and there,

but the treasure that had
left richmond was gone.

Alex and I pursued
this very thing.

Tring to figure out what
happened to jefferson davis,

who was supposedly
fleeing with the money

from the, um,
confederate treasury.

What happened to it?

Matty: I mean, warren's been
studying this for quite some time,

and he alluded on the phone to,
actually,

the treasure hunter
that he's working with

having found actual gold.

Oh, well,
now we're even more interested.

Matty (laughing): I thought
that would pique your interest.

All right,
so you want to talk to him?

- Yes. - Sure.

All right, great. He-he's...

He should be standing by,
if we can bring him up.

Absolutely.

Matty: There he is. Warren,
hi. It's matty.

I'm here with rick
and marty lagina.

- Rick: Hi, warren.
- Hey, matty, how you doing?

Hey,
warren. Pleased to meet you...

- Electronically.
- Nice meeting you guys.

So, what do you believe...

In terms of confederate gold,
civil w*r gold,

and where it may be?

Well, matty, as we talked,
there is, in my view,

a great deal of
buried civil w*r gold

in the southwest,

potentially in the tens
of billions of dollars.

- Whoa.
- Marty: As you know, alex and I

searched for what
might have been missing

from jefferson davis,
but... But even in the grandest sense,

it was not billions of dollars.

Why do you think that
billions are still out there,

and where would
that have come from?

Can you fill that in?

Marty, that's a great question.

So, yes,
the treasury that may have been lost...

The confederate
treasury down in georgia,

with the treasure train...

That was a much smaller
amount of what was actually left

in the specific coffers of
the formal confederacy,

but the treasure
we're talking about now

is not the same thing.

It's much more
massive in quantity.

We're talking about
the treasure of...

The knights of
the golden circle.

The reason there's
more money involved is,

they were taking it from the
treasury of the united states

before the civil w*r broke out,
during the w*r,

so over the years,
pre-civil w*r,

civil w*r, post-civil w*r,

they were very active as
a full-throttle organization

that involved banking,
finance, transportation

and the actual
heisting of the gold

and treasures.

Narrator: Billions
of dollars in gold,

and some stolen from the
treasury of the united states?

Could an underground
confederate organization

really have made
off with that much?

And how did this
group come to exist?

In 1854,

in the wake of the growing
antislavery sentiment

in the united states,

a secret society of
proslavery advocates formed

under the name "knights
of the golden circle,"

or kgc.

Their goal was to annex

a so-called golden
circle of sl*ve territories

under the leadership
of mexico's emperor,

maximilian I.

The area would stretch
from the southern states

down to mexico
and central america,

and extend to the caribbean.

Members of the kgc are
believed to have included

john wilkes booth,

ku klux klan leader
nathan bedford forrest,

the outlaw jesse james,

and jefferson davis.

Their primary goal
was the perpetuation

of the institution of sl*very.

At the outbreak of the
american civil w*r in 1861,

they fought with the confederacy
against the federal government,

the union government.

After the end of the civil w*r,

they essentially
went underground

and continued to perpetuate
their ideas as a secret society.

Narrator: To support
their objectives,

the kgc accumulated
vast sums of money.

Some funds were amassed via
legitimate business enterprises.

Others were acquired illegally.

Berry: The thing the knights did best,
better than anything

that they possibly could do,
was steal.

They were great thieves.

They stole gold, silver, jewels.

They took it from people, banks.

They even looted
two federal treasuries.

So they took what they had,

and they started
burying it in the ground

all across arkansas, missouri,

western tennessee,
northern mississippi,

all in that area right there.

The theory is,
is that at some point along the way,

the knights went
back after the w*r,

sometime between 1865 and 1912.

They went back and
they gathered all of this up.

They put it on carts
and they took it out west.

Did they take it to utah?

Did they take it to arizona?

Did they take it to new mexico?

Nobody knows.

You said that these monies
were accumulated pre-,

during and post-civil w*r.

So,
what was their intent from the beginning?

What was the reason...
Aside from the obvious...

What was the...

Were they singularly
focused on an objective?

Warren: The knights
of the golden circle,

as a subversive unit of the confederacy,
was two things:

It was confederate
and it was masonic.

Masonry was a very big part

-of the knights of the golden circle.
-Right.

And so,
I would say it's some sort of

secret society mission
that has to do with templar

tradition,
rosicrucian tradition,

-and a lot of the things you've been working on...
-Here we go.

-Where have we heard that before?
-There's no question

there's a scottish rite
freemasonic connection between

the kgc and the people...

The group that was
involved in oak island.

- Wow. - Marty: Holy smokes.

That's remarkable.

Matty: So warren,
were you seeing

similarities between
what these guys

are working on and what
you've been discovering?

Warren: Well, matty,
there's certainly a connection

in terms of let's
call it the ideology

between what was
going on in oak island

and what was going on with
the knights of the golden circle,

because masonry
was a very big part

of the knights of
the golden circle.

Narrator: Members of the secret
society known as the freemasons

have had a unique
relationship with oak island

for more than 200 years,

from daniel mcinnis...
One of the three boys

who first discovered
the money pit in 1795...

To m.R. Chappell and even

future american president
franklin d. Roosevelt,

who joined the search in 1909.

To maintain secrecy,
freemasons communicate

through the language of symbols.

Numerous masonic symbols
have been discovered on oak island

that have also been found
in connection with the kgc,

such as triangles,

the letter g,
representing god as well as geometry,

and even human faces.

And in the case of the kgc,

these types of
symbols have actually

led to buried treasure.

The whole point of the
knights of the golden circle

and their treasure was
to navigate the initiated,

those on the inside,
back to these treasures after decades.

They did it through the
key symbols of masonry,

and these coded clues get
you back to these treasures.

Now,
these have been found before.

I know of at least
three or four cases

where gold bullion
or silver bars

were found by treasure hunters.

And one of those was a
guy named bob brewer.

Brewer: The first time
that I found kgc treasure...

That was probably the...

Most exciting thing
I ever did in my life.

When we go treasure hunting,
we go looking

for our symbols and
our clues and everything.

We've got

the codes and all of the maps

and things that they
leave on the ground.

They leave stone maps,
they leave

pieces of metal. When
I get close to treasure,

I start having goose bumps

and my hair starts
raising up in the back.

And it ain't never
failed me yet. (chuckles)

warren, do you think

the knights of the
golden circle still exist?

Uh, great question.

I actually do think,
in some form,

they do still exist.
Some of these

very large,
buried gold depositories

are guarded by the knights of
the golden circle descendants

or some secret
society organization.

So these deposits, are they...

Are they on public or private land,
if I might ask?

Well,
it depends where they are. Um,

some are on private land
and can't be recovered

without permission
of the landowner.

Others are on government land,
state or federal.

If it's on federal land,

bureau of land management,
blm land,

you can't recover them.

A lot of the treasure,
actually, guys,

is buried on federal property.

Do you have an x marks the spot?

Do you have a place that you
think there may be treasure?

Yeah, matty, I do. Um,

there's a young
lady out in utah,

near delta, utah.

Um, her name is holly remkes.

And for the past seven years,

uh,
we've been corresponding with each other.

Exchanging the amazing shots,
pictures she's taking

of kgc symbolism
and rock carvings

and sculptural pieces out in

the barren canyonlands of
utah. Matter of fact, matty,

uh, I'm thinking of heading
out there to see holly,

uh,
to explore what's going on out in utah,

and I was, uh,
interested to know

if you guys might be interested

in coming out and
exploring with me. Uh,

I don't know what
your availability is

but I think you'd
have an amazing time.

W-warren,
we really appreciate that. I think

here on oak island, we're u...

Literally up to our necks
in a search agenda.

-But I think, uh, matty's eyes
-marty: Matty, you'd go, wouldn't you?

Are-are wide open
here. I think he might be

quite willing to join you.

Yeah,
I want to see what you're talking about.

Especially,
I'm fascinated by the fact that

- you're seeing connections between here and there.
- Connections.

- I-I want to see with my eyes.
- Yeah, that... So are we.

- Yeah. Eyes and boots.
- So you can be our eyes and ears out there.

Warren,
it's been a pleasure. I'm sure rick and I

are gonna have a whole
bunch more questions

after we digest this a little
bit. But in the meantime,

you and matty getting
together is gonna be great. Uh,

uh, I'm sure we will be talking again,
so thank you.

- Warren: Thanks, guys.
- Rick: Thank you, warren.

Matty: See you soon.

Narrator: Fillmore, utah.

This quiet, rural town,
named after

former u.S. President
millard fillmore,

was once the capital of
the fledgling territory of utah.

Today,
it's famous as the home of the historical

utah territorial statehouse,

which was built back in 1855.

Treasure hunters matty
blake and warren getler

have journeyed to the
statehouse to meet local resident

holly remkes,
who is a self-described

desert detective and
treasure hunter herself.

- Matty: Holly. How you doing?
- Oh, hi!

Narrator: Warren and holly have
corresponded for seven years...

- Good to meet you, finally.
- Warren: Hey. Wow, after all these years.

Narrator: ...But this is the
first time they're actually

meeting in person.

Warren's told me a little bit about you,
but, um,

I mean, h-how did you get
into this? What's your story?

Well,
I-I've been into it my whole entire life,

because my dad has a love for the desert,
and ever since

I was very young,
we would go out in the desert

and prospect and look for,
uh, fossils

- and all kinds...
- So you were looking for fossils and prospecting...

You mean you were
looking for gold too? Or...

- Yeah, absolutely.
- Panning for gold?

Yeah, my dad, uh,
named a mining claim after me,

uh, when I was little,
'cause I tripped and he found

some gold there. He
called it holly's folly.

(all chuckle)

narrator: After holly's first
explorations with her father,

she began embarking
on her own treasure hunts

in the hot desert
landscape of southern utah.

She soon discovered
mysterious clues

that defied explanation.

Places that I'd
been my whole life...

There were things there
that I had not seen before.

Narrator: The self-proclaimed
desert detective now believes

she has come across
symbols and codes

leading to caches of gold

buried by the knights
of the golden circle.

Probably the best way and
maybe the only way to learn

how to decode the stuff
is by going out in the field,

seeing what you see,
writing it down, keeping records,

photographing it and
keeping an open mind

to what you're seeing.

Narrator: Holly is convinced

that if you can put
the clues together

you can solve the mystery.

And if you can
solve the mystery,

you can find the treasure.

Holly: I feel like the
answers are there.

These rock faces and the
animals and the symbols.

I believe that you can find
where the treasures are

if you can decode these things.

I think it's amazing.

There's a lot of masonic
influence in-in this.

-Okay.
-There are a lot of ties between the knights of the golden circle

- treasures and what's going on in oak island.
- Ah.

And a lot of the methods
they used are similar:

Booby traps,
tunnels, water traps.

How about carved
stones? There's a lot

of carved stones on oak island.

The carved stones are
very similar to oak island.

There's messaging that was coded,
basically.

So holly,
I'd like to talk about some of the results

of your detective work here.

Um,
I see you've brought some stuff.

- What do-what do we got here?
- I've got this map

- mm-hmm.
- That warren referred to in his book.

And this map is really,
really interesting.

Narrator: This map
of the utah territory

was printed in 1895.

Warren and holly are convinced

it contains coded messages
and purposely misspelled words

that offer clues to the
whereabouts of hidden caches

of kgc gold.

Our mountain here is misspelled.

They left the "h"
out of pahvant butte,

a good indicator there'll
be a cache in the area.

Matty: You're saying
that's purposely misspelled

as another code or
signal to those who know?

I think so. And they also did

this spiral symbol, which is...

You'll see it in a lot
of the petroglyphs

as a directional as well.

Matty: How would
the kgc get symbology

and misspellings and
stuff into a map like this?

Well,
they infiltrated government agencies,

like the u.S. Geological survey.

-Wow.
-And they knew exactly how to convey

geographic
information symbolically.

So you don't think it's just
an accidental misspelling?

Right. If you go out in the
field and you start finding

the cypher panels of the
knights of the golden circle

right there, they're telling you

you've come to the right place.

Well,
is that what I'm looking at here?

'cause I'm seeing things that look like,
uh,

- ciphers or codes of some kind.
- Mm-hmm.

- Did you take these? - I did.

I don't know if you
can see this horse.

Matty: Oh, yeah. Clearly.

The horse head is
often a knight symbol.

And then this is coded as well.

I've seen the "ac"
at a lot of the sites,

and five is the
symbol for silver.

So I believe it's talking
about gold and silver.

- Gold and silver. - Mm-hmm.

Did-did you take these locally?

- Uh-huh. - Wow.

Warren: We think,

based on holly's amazing

treasure detective work,
that there are probably

20 major depositories
around here.

Interesting.

And jesse james,
who was the field commander

of the knights of
the golden circle,

buried tons of gold.

- So hold on. Jesse james, famed outlaw...
- Right.

He was actually operative

right here in
the utah territory.

- Jesse james? The jesse james?
- Jesse james.

Matty: This is getting
better and better.

I didn't expect jesse james.

And all here. He
was-he was here.

Yes.

Jesse james operated in this area,
definitely.

New mexico, arizona, utah.

And there's a lot
of evidence for why

they revered him so much,
because of his ability

to be so mobile.

Narrator: Jesse james was
born on September 5, 1847,

near kearney, missouri.

During the civil w*r,
while still in his teens,

jesse is believed
to have been part

of a pro-confederate
guerilla group,

led by william quantrill,
that attacked and massacred

union soldiers.

Warren: During the civil w*r,
he was a very young

and very successful
fighter in the confederacy.

But after the w*r,
he became a so-called "outlaw."

- move! - (woman screams)

narrator: In 1866,

jesse and his brother frank

robbed the clay county
savings bank in liberty, missouri,

k*lling an innocent bystander.

(g*nsh*t)

the g*ng's murderous
legend soon took hold

as they held up banks
across the midwest

- and western united states.
- Hands up!

Jameson: Few people got more
headlines than frank and jesse james.

They got the publicity,
they got the notoriety,

they got the fame.

Narrator: But
could there be more

to the story of jesse james

than just robbing banks and
holding up stagecoaches?

Warren: Well,
jesse james is traditionally known

as an outlaw of the wild west,
and he was that.

But what-what isn't
known is what did he do

with all that money
that he was stealing?

He never got rich.

According to the research I've been doing,
and others,

he was a leading member

of the knights of
the golden circle.

Nelson: According to the theory,
he was, in fact,

financing the kgc and,
ultimately,

what would've been
a second civil w*r.

Warren: All that money
that jesse james was stealing

went into the
underground coffers,

the vaults of the kgc.

Some was stolen
from the union coffers,

union mint,
others were the results of smelting

their own gold.

Jesse james was
said to have been

on the inside of train hits

that involved payment
from the insurance company

that he controlled.

James organized the
accumulation of the wealth

and the protection
of this wealth,

not just until he
was allegedly k*lled,

which was, you know,
18... 1880s.

But we say he
deliberately faked his death

so that he could continue
in this role post-civil w*r.

Did he have a-a calling card

or something that makes you think,
like, when you,

when you get to a site,
was there some reason

you would think this is
a jesse james operation?

We have a lot of evidence that
jesse james put his signature

on a lot of these treasures
and on the carvings.

Two backward j's, j.J.,

- for jesse james, yeah.
- No kidding? J.J.

- Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. - Wow.

There's a lot of
money involved here.

Some of these sites,
as holly will attest,

- are actively guarded.
- Very active.

- Really? - Yes.

Do you think, warren,
that these are relatives

of the original golden
circle people or do you think

it's a,
it's a whole separate thing,

that they just happen to
know where the money is?

Well,
in some local environments,

it's probably the descendants,

the legacy "sentinels" watching.

It's their role. Don't touch it,
guard it.

So,
I warned holly in her travels,

she has to wary 'cause
she could be watched.

Have... has anything
happened to you?

There's been a few instances
that have had me very worried

and I was never
gonna go out again.

- Like what? Give me an example.
- Um...

I've been out in the desert and
a black helicopter showed up.

About that same time
there was a man that came

in a security vehicle
and he asked me

some different, weird questions.

- Really? - Yes.

To let you know,
"we're watching you."

like, I'm-I'm being watched.

Another reason I believe
that I've been... being watched

is multiple times I've gone
out and studied the site.

And I've gone back
within a few days

and there would be footprints
following me around every spot

that I've been, and some of
these locations are very remote.

There was a cave
that I went to one time,

and I went back,
probably two days later,

and there were big footprints
in the dust of the cave there.

And maybe it was just coincidence,
I don't know.

Most people think nothing of it,

but it scared me a lot.

So, families going way back,
generations after generations,

swore blood oaths
to protect this money.

Kind of scary. I think
I've been shot at once,

when I was out in
the desert one day

and I heard this sound,
it scared me to death.

It was just a "zwing,"
kind of a metallic sound.

And my brother said,
"I think that's a

'b*llet ricocheting
off of a rock' sound."

- I got in my vehicle and left.
- Matty: Really? I got to say,

this is not what I expected
when we came to utah.

I mean,
this is a whole different level.

I mean, this sounds, uh,
I hate to be overdramatic,

but it sounds like it
could be dangerous.

It could be.

I-I would love to lay eyes
on some of these things.

I have to see them for
myself. Is that possible?

I don't want to make
you uncomfortable,

bringing you to
any of these sites,

but I would love
to see it for myself.

Well,
I... if you want to take the risk.

All right, well,
I can take care of myself.

- Let's go.
- Warren: Let's do it.

Holly: All right, sounds great.

Matty: So, I'm really excited

to see what it
looks like in person.

Narrator: Local treasure
hunter holly remkes is leading

matty blake and warren getler

to a remote site
in the utah desert,

where she's discovered
coded messages

carved into the landscape.

Holly believes the
messages prove

that a secret organization

called the knights
of the golden circle,

or kgc,

operated in the area,

where they hid a fortune in
gold at the end of the civil w*r.

Holly: Okay,
our spot is going to be about...

About right here, I think. Yeah.

- Okay. Good place to pull over?
- Yep.

Narrator: This site is protected

by utah's bureau of
land management,

and digging is
strictly forbidden.

But matty is eager to
examine the symbols

that could prove
warren's theories are true

and point to connections

that deepen the
mystery of oak island.

I'm gonna get my old man cane.

My snake-bopping stick. Alright.

Narrator: On
previous explorations,

holly has discovered

that this site possesses
unique characteristics

that would have
made it a prime location

for members of the kgc to carve

symbolic messages.

One is the way in which
the rocks reflect the sun.

- Wow. I mean... - This is cool.

Matty: This is literally like
someone put a spotlight on it.

(chuckles): I would say great find,
holly,

but it seems like it
wants to be found.

Sometimes you can see
those for miles and miles.

And the symbol is strong as
you come up here, but then

- as you get closer, it almost disappears.
- It kind of fades.

- Holly: Yeah.
- Warren: Yup, it kind of fades.

They were all
about shadow signs,

and this is a sun sign.

-What do I mean by that, right? It-it catches the sun.
-Yeah.

Warren: It's deliberate.
It's on a reflective stone.

Does this symbol mean anything to you,
warren?

Well, this is a symbol

that's been used
before in treasure sites.

I mean, it's-it's kind of,
uh, to me,

implying that there
could be a treasure

inside of a cave or a tunnel.

Hey, hey, hey.

Who is that? Did you
guys see that truck?

- Oh, that wasn't you guys, huh?
- That truck...

I'm sorry,
I don't want to interrupt... that truck

was tinted windows black,
no tags, and it just...

- Out of nowhere.
- Out in the middle of nowhere.

- Yeah.
- It... Definitely looking at us.

This kind of thing
happens all the time

when you're out at kgc sites.

Yeah. Helicopters sometimes.

Tinted-window vans.

You never know.

Wow.

So, this is a classic kgc
site for burying gold. You got

this amazing hill
and a... And a vista

- that goes on forever.
- Matty: I mean...

-(holly chuckles) -they can
see approaching threats.

- Absolutely.
- And do what they needed to do.

Holly, was this the only
thing you found in this area?

(laughs): Oh,
no. There's a lot more.

- Oh, let's-let's take a look.
- Holly: This... Yeah. Yeah.

Anyway, I want to show
you this panel over this way.

This is where it starts
getting a little bit creepy.

Warren,
this is like christmas for you.

Yeah, kid in a candy shop.

Matty: What have you got here?

-Look at that. -Oh, wow. -Wow.

-Look at that. That's classic kgc.
-Matty: Holy moly.

Why do you say that,
warren, "classic kgc"?

It is. And the reason
is that they use these

kind of spooky stick
figure characters.

Matty (laughs): Well,
first of all, it looks...

Almost like an alien. I know
what you mean by spooky.

- Warren: Yeah. - Uh,

it's a weird-shaped
head. It tapers down.

And then there's something
o-on top of its head.

So, they used hangmen often.

- That's what they're trying to...
- Oh, yeah, that's a noose.

- Warren: That's a noose. Yeah.
- Holly: A noose! I thought

- it was a feather or something.
- Matty: Oh, my god.

- Warren: No, it's a...
- Holly: Oh, that's creepy.

- Warren: It's a noose.
- Holly: No wonder.

-So, that's a warning saying, "hey."
-warren: Yeah.

Well,
it's both. It's saying this is kgc,

and it's saying woe to those

who delve too far
into this treasure site

if you're not an insider.

Hey, look at that.

Matty: We got a tinted-window
truck coming by us again.

This is the second
time it's happened.

Yeah,
they're definitely coming by us.

Are tags on that? - Yup.

- That's... - (chuckles)

I-I predicted they would at some point,
so...

That's what makes it so hard,

is you don't know if
you're being watched,

because it could be anybody.

I mean, you just don't know.

I believe that the
kgc is still guarding

or watching over a
lot of these treasures.

I believe there's other groups

that are watching
over these vault sites.

And I have no idea how
they know we're there.

Holly, did you notice

this index finger is missing?

-And whose index finger is missing?
-(holly laughs)

-holly: Jesse james.
-Warren: Jesse james. -Matty: Wow.

- Warren: Can you believe that?
- Holly: And it's on

- that same hand, isn't it? Okay.
- Warren: It's on the same hand.

- Wow.
- Warren: And this "s" over here may be a snake.

- I can't quite tell.
- Holly: Uh, it is a snake.

-Yeah, I can see.
-See the head? There's the head right there.

Holly: Snakes are directional,
aren't they?

Warren: So,
snakes tend to be directional.

Snakes are very important

to the scottish rite symbolism.

- Right? Yeah. - Wow!

Holly: Well, look at this.

- Oh, wow.
- This looks like it's saying

- to go to the same place.
- Matty: Yeah, it's pointing...

- Warren: Yeah.
- Matty: Totally, yeah. If that's

a directional marker,
it's pointing.

- Let's check it out -
yeah. Let's check it out.

Warren: One of the best ways
to prove that the kgc theory

that we're putting
forward is true

is to show that these codes
lead to gold being recovered.

It's actually using
their network,

their system of navigation

to get back to these treasures,
to recover them.

Oh,
that is some panel. Look at that.

- Wow.
- Matty: What does this mean?

Warren: Well,
this is a full panel

of kgc inscripted messaging.

-Matty: Wow.
-The first thing that catches my eye

other than the stick
figure is the same symbol

we saw that caught our eye,
right?

We saw that reflective symbol.

Matty: Is that a b*llet hole?

- I think it is.
- It looks like it.

- Looks like a...
- Look where it is, too, in his chest.

- Holly: It's scary.
- Matty: Right in the heart.

And, uh, I'm just taking
something in right here. I see

a 33 right below

-your hand there. Maybe a 33 or 32.
-Matty: Oh, wow.

Warren: Again,
33rd degree scottish rite freemason,

that was jesse james.

- Hey, look at that.
- Holly: I know, I see that.

- Look under your arm there.
- Matty: Oh!

-Warren: That is...
-Matty: Is that a hook? What is that?

That's the jj. That's
the backward jj. That is

the ultimate jesse james sign.

The backward "j"
is making an anchor.

- Matty: Oh, I see, it's js back to back.
- Warren: Upside down.

- There you go, two js back to back.
- Holly: Yeah.

You've seen this before,

and this is a symbol
for jesse james.

- Yeah, it's his signature.
- Wow.

You should see the next site,
though.

We're going to a totally
new site if you want to go.

- Let's do it. No.
- Yeah. I think you'll love it.

Matty: Hey,
that's what I came here for. Let's go.

Matty: Let's dial 'em up here.

All right,
now if you stand here,

you'll be able to see
them in a second.

Oh, yeah. Cool.

Narrator: Having just explored

several mysterious sites

in the utah desert...

Where confederate gold
may have been buried...

Matty blake and treasure
hunter warren getler

give a progress report

to rick and marty lagina
back on oak island.

- Hey, guys! -Hey, guys.
- Rick and marty, how are ya?

We're doing fantastic,
but we're super interested

in what's going on
in utah right now.

Look, you guys sent me out
here to see if there's anything

to this mystery. I
can't tell you whether

there's civil w*r gold or
any other type of gold here,

but what I can tell you is this.

There are consistent

pattern stone carvings
that are all over here.

- Wow.
- And they're consistent with

what he's seen in other areas.

And to me,
now you're on to something.

So you think these
symbols are purposeful?

In other words,
there's a real connection

to an organized activity?

Yeah, I mean,
we're... It's not just graffiti, is it?

Warren: It definitely
was a system

that they created in the
south and the southwest,

and the way to find
it is systematically,

you follow clue to clue,
cipher to cipher.

And you may find something.

Hey, one of the things that
came up in our conversation

when we embarked on
this is that jesse james

was involved. Are you
seeing any verification of that?

Yeah, it was amazing. I saw the "jj,"
which is jesse james,

either like this in order,

or two back-to-backs,
forming an anchor.

It's the calling
card of jesse james.

- Hmm. - Rick: What's curious

to me... is there any
connection to any

mason or templar,
uh, affiliation?

Well,
there's definitely masonic connection here.

Some of the cryptic
panels we saw

definitely had the masonic 33,
33rd degree.

And, um, going back

to the templars, I'd say

their ideology was
somewhat templar focused.

Matty: Yeah,
it was pretty stunning, guys, to see

the same type of symbols
that we see on oak island,

and I asked warren about that.

You know,
does that mean templars were out here?

Of course not. Simply,
what it might mean is that the kgc

was copying the way
that templars hid treasure.

- Yeah. The methodology. Yeah.
- The methodology.

- Mm-hmm.
- Rick: So it sounds like

the-the trip has
been very fruitful.

Some of these statements
that you made are quite stunning.

So please keep us informed.

Marty: Yeah,
get us whatever information you can,

and then when you get back here,
we can go over it all.

All right,
guys. I'll see you soon.

See you guys. Thank you.

- Thank you.
- Appreciate all the hard work.

Narrator: After reporting
in to rick and marty lagina...

Warren: Matty,
look at this lava rock here.

Narrator: ...Matty blake
and warren getler rejoin

treasure hunter holly remkes
at one of the most dramatic

and mysterious sites she has
uncovered in the utah desert.

Holly: You're gonna love this.

Narrator: Holly believes
that the symbology carved

into the side of one of
the rock faces located here

could lead directly to a
massive treasure vault

hidden by the
secret organization

known as "the knights
of the golden circle."

oh,
is that it right there? I see it.

- Yes. Isn't it awesome?
- Yeah, it's amazing.

Oh, wow. Look at that.

-Yeah, this is a legit... Kgc panel.
-Matty: Unbelievable.

Matty: Being here,
I can actually see the difference

between what looks like
someone just rubbing on the rock

and those things are...

- Those are carved into the rock.
- Warren: Mm-hmm.

Here's the thing
that's k*lling me.

Right here,
look at this. I see "jj." that is...

-Matty: Oh, wow! Jj.
-Holly: Yeah. -That is...

That is... That is
the telltale signature.

Holly: Well, I see the 33.

- Kind of coded within that.
- Oh, wow. Oh!

The seven becomes
the arc of the...

Holly: Yup,
that's what I can see.

33rd degree scottish
rite mason jesse james.

- Oh, wow.
- This is interesting, too.

The face. That's super important

in treasure hunting, the face.

You believe that he
is somehow indicating

that there's treasure right around here,
yeah?

Yes, he's got the symbol,
that's his ear. Uh...

Blake: Yeah,
it doesn't look like a normal ear.

And I've seen it in a lot
of treasure hunting books,

- and it means "gold nearby."
- uh-huh.

Warren: To me, it's a map
basically telling you what to do.

My interpretation would be,
go to where the eye is pointing,

in that direction,

and there'll be something very
important where you need to go.

- Yeah.
- Holly, can we go in the direction the eye is looking?

- Yes! Okay, yup.
- All right, let's do it.

I want to see if there's
anything over there.

Narrator: The treasure
hunters follow the clue

directing them to the north,

but they must navigate
dangerous terrain,

going up and over rocks.

And finally,
on the edge of a cliff,

they find another
set of petroglyphs.

-Matty: Look at this.
-Warren: Oh, yeah. -Sure.

Matty: His face

-is pointing right here.
-Yeah. -Mm-hmm.

Look at this,
how they did the compass and square.

Yeah,
the masonic square and compass right there.

Matty: The shapes of
those letters are masonic

- in themselves? - Warren: Yeah.

- Matty: Pretty stunning.
- Yeah.

But you need to see what's
around the corner from us.

- What, there's more over here?
- Oh, yeah.

They don't just leave one
thing to tell you where the spot is.

- You need to be sure.
- All right, I'll check it out.

- Over here, holly? - Yeah.

Just watch your footing, though,

- because it's kind of steep.
- Yeah, you got it.

- (wind whistling) - oh,
wow. I see it!

This kind of looks like a
little chamber or vault to me.

Ght, guys,
I'm heading down. I saw that writing.

It looks like
writing on this rock.

Narrator: Just outside fillmore,
utah,

treasure hunters holly
remkes and warren getler

have taken matty blake
to what they believe

could be an important site

connected to jesse james

and a treasure
cache of buried gold.

All right, guys, I'm down here.

It's definitely carving.

I can't really
make out what it is.

Pour some water to visualize.

Oh, my gosh.

J, period, h.

"j.H. Squires."

do we know anything about squires,
or that...?

Warren: Oh! Hold on.

It just dawned on me.

What, my friends,
is a squire? A knight.

- A knight of the golden circle?
- Yes.

Jesse knight!

Could that be another
allusion to jesse james then?

Yes. Jesse,
the knight of the golden circle.

Matty: Wow. I
could be sitting down

where jesse james
carved his name!

Warren: Coming out
here with matty to meet

with holly validates so
much of what we believe.

To me, it's the biggest story

out there in american history.
In hidden history, this is it.

The knights of
the golden circle.

Their power, their treasure.

Matty: All right, guys,
I'm coming out, all right?

Warren: You're starting
to see the size and scope

of this thing. It's enormous.

Wow. I did not expect that.

I mean,
it's clear as day... "j squires."

so clearly, something... They
were up to something up here.

And it's not an easy place

to get to,
to do this work. Is this something

that maybe you hope
to some day go after?

- Or are you just trying to find out the story?
- Well...

I think it'd be neat,
but I think laws need to be changed

- if we were to go after this.
- Warren: Yeah.

This is bureau of land
management property,

- federal property under the blm's guidance.
- Okay.

And they don't allow
treasure recovery.

Warren: Is it a coincidence

only that where kgc sites are,

they become federal land

where no treasure
recovery is allowed?

Holly, I can't thank you enough

for all your research
and for taking me up here.

- Warren, thank you for your expertise.
- It's my pleasure.

- Yeah, it's cool.
- I'm excited that you were able

to come and see this. I'm
glad you weren't disappointed.

It exceeded my expectations,
to be honest.

- Awesome. - Uh, incredible.

Let's head down, huh?

Marty: Matty blake. Fresh
back from the desert southwest.

-Right? -Yeah.
-Our eyes and boots.

- Talk to us. - (sighs)

I-I... I'm still processing it,
guys. What a trip.

I mean,
there were a couple of parallels

to oak island as
we've had happen

with these other
treasure mysteries.

Um, you know,
we were looking at all these symbols,

and we're discovering
these things as we go,

and I'm just going,
"wow. Rock carvings.

- Where have I seen this before?"
- marty: Yup.

You know, right here.

And I've learned a lot about
that and what that could mean

and how they're left as calling
cards or perhaps warnings,

- like the 90 foot stone, or...
- Or boobytraps.

Or boobytraps.

So where do you guys stand?

On the possibility that civil
w*r era confederate gold

may be laying in the
american southwest?

Is there civil w*r gold missing?

Confederate gold missing? I would say,
almost a certainty.

- Hmm. - How much, where, uh,

- in what manner did it disappear? All unknown.
- Hmm.

I mean, my parameters,
if you will,

are always the "w" s, right?

Who, what, when,
where, why and how?

Well,
you're chasing a known who...

- the knights of the golden circle.
- Right.

You might be able
to expand on that

because of the possible
masonic connection,

the possible
rosicrucian connection,

the possible templar connection.

You know, you've got a very
well-known historical figure

connected with this...
Jesse james.

So, there are pathways
to get to a final answer.

- Very interesting.
- So, what do you

and/or warren want to do next?
Where do we go with this?

Or where does he go with this?

Well, for him,
I think a site like this...

It is an exhilarating
corroboration

of all the work he's done.

This is proving his theory.

You're actually fairly enthused?

I'm definitely interested in
what warren is going to do next.

- Yes.
- Okay, well, there you go.

Look, good job, matty.
Real good job.

You stay on that. Maybe come up

with the one thing
that proves that.

We can get back to our own.

Great. You've got it, guys.
Let's go find you some gold.

-Yeah. -Let's do it. -Right.
