I've spent my life telling horror stories.

But imagine if those

stories were real,

and suddenly, you found yourself

it really sunked into me

until after everything happened.

It's mind chilling that horrible

things can happen to people.

This land had a lotta history, it had,

uh, a historical marker in the front.

Somethin' drew me to the house.

And I don't know what it was. I just felt

compelled to, you know, to purchase it.

I was really thrilled that our son,

Granger, was gonna live in this house.

[Vickie O'Toole] We had

all of these plans

for how we were going to make it a place

where he could have happy childhood memories.

[Chris] When we first looked at the house,

there was a lotta crosses and Bibles.

There was a lock

on one a the guest doors,

and the owner

refused to open it.

Uh, we've asked her several

times, she refused.

At first, I didn't think

it was a big deal.

I just thought it was maybe their

old people quirks, you know?

[Granger] There's a swing!

- [Chris] Stay away from that pond, June bug!

Not unless me

or Mama Vickie are there.

[exhaling] Here we go!

You ready?

Yes, I am.

We thought great things were

gonna come with this purchase.

[Chris giggling]

[both chuckling]

They left the padlock

on the door, so weird.

I'll take care of it

and the crosses, too.

I was really thrilled to live

in this house, and And

And share moments and memories.

But little did I know,

those memories weren't gonna to be the best.

[Vickie shouting] Chris!

I need help with the sofa.

The house was very eerie.

Come on, Granger, what did I

tell you about going in the pond?

I didn't.

Then how did those wet

footprints get on the floor?

I don't know.

What are you doin' in here?

- This is my room.

[hesitating] You want this one?

It's too small for a bedroom.

I'm serious, okay?

Don't let me catch you alone in the pond.

It's dangerous.

That was the first paranormal experience in

the house. The first day that I moved in.

[door creaking]

- [thumping]

[exhaling]

You like your new room?

- Mmm-hmm.

You're tired, aren't you? - No.

[chuckling softly]

[whispering] Night,

night, June bug.

[Vickie] Good night.

[thudding]

Granger?

Is that you?

[creaking]

Granger? You knockin'

on somethin'?

[water dripping]

Granger? [knocking] Open up.

Mama?

[exhaling] Stop fooling around.

[Granger] Mama, help me!

- [loudly] Granger? Honey?

[Granger] Mama, help me!

It was Granger's room.

I saw that his hand was in the air

while he was asleep.

It looked like somebody was holdin' his

hand, and I put his hand down.

I mean, it was kinda odd.

[exhaling]

There was a man,

and he looked straight at me,

and I'm thinkin' to myself,

like, where did this come from?

Looked at it again, he was gone.

Right there, I should've

just known that that was

just a sign that maybe I

shouldn't a bought the house.

- [Chris sighing]

Something wasn't good.

I can feel that there was something there.

There are some things

that it's very hard to fathom.

Chris started telling me things, you

know, that she thought was going on.

I didn't really believe her

much, because, I'm just, like,

oh, you're over-thinkin' things.

That was imaginary,

it's not that big of a deal.

What's goin' on?

[exhaling] Ah, Granger's

door sticks in its frame.

Okay, but you see

what time it is, right?

Ah, crap! We gotta go.

Granger?

Who was that?

Where did she go?

She was right here.

Come on, we gotta get to school.

I thought I had

saw a little girl,

and I was tryin' to figure

out, like, who is this?

[Granger] Bye!

Morning, Chris! Ready for another

week of being ignored by our students?

Hey, Doreen!

How'd the move go?

All unpacked?

[exasperated] Try

Vickie wants

an excuse to make chili.

Uh-huh! Yeah, sure.

[Chris] That night was

just really, really heavy,

and from then on, we just really didn't

invite much people over to our property.

[country music playing]

I was coming home from work,

and I see this guy with a farmer's hat on

peeking around the house,

and then he just vanished just like that.

Hey, you okay?

[breath trembling] Yeah, I'm Fine.

I just got startled by somethin'.

I was like,

W What the hell?

You know, like, what's

goin' on here?

Welcome back

to A Ghost Ruined My Life.

We need to realize that there's a lotta

things we don't know about the past.

You know, that history has

not been documented.

Some of the people, the best people,

are really not the good people.

I mean, we all have secrets.

A lotta things happen that

will always change my life.

[tapping]

[distorted chanting]

Who are you?

[muffled screaming]

Looked like a sl*ve woman,

and then when I blinked,

and looked at it again,

it was completely gone.

That's when I started hearing the name

JR, JR, over and over, over my head.

I started to do research

and I really looked

into the land and the people

who lived on the land,

to try to figure out

what was going on.

A lot of bad things

happened here.

A lot of deaths.

The sl*ves were being r*ped.

And the person who was raping

them, uh, was JR.

And they bore him children and he

drowned each and every one of them

in the water

around the property.

The house was haunted,

the land was haunted.

Chris started telling

me things, I mean

If you look at what

the city writes about him,

he's a very upstanding guy

in the community

and does great things

for people.

Um, however, if you go

to the library

and you start looking

in archives,

that's not quite as nice

as he was publicly.

Jesus.

How are we supposed

to sleep here?

How is Granger

supposed to sleep here?

Chris, it's history, okay?

We're here now, he's

gone, they're all gone.

I don't think they are.

In the barn, I saw a woman.

You saw a picture.

- No.

I saw her and Granger too.

He's seen someone,

a little girl.

And I saw him.

Abernathy.

I don't understand.

I'm scared.

You can't be telling Granger any of this,

you'll give him nightmares for weeks.

Vick, this little girl

was m*rder*d by Abernathy.

What if he doesn't

[Chris] Vickie didn't

believe me at first.

These spirits, they communicate.

They want peace.

They want their story to be heard.

[Doreen] Okay,

so are you doing a lot

[Chris] Can I talk to you

about Abernathy?

I did some digging.

[Doreen] Tell your Mom

and Dad what we talked about.

Not pretty, is it?

The whole town thinks

this guy's a saint.

[Doreen] People don't want

to know the truth.

This is dangerous

territory, Chris.

[exhales]

[Chris] He would

follow me to work.

JR doesn't want anything to

be brought out in the open.

He doesn't want his secret to be let

out, so he is, um

He's messing with me right now.

Felt scared, because I was around

children, I was around students.

And so that made me concerned,

because if JR is attached to me,

what is he gonna do

to these students?

I left my job.

Um, I'm sorry, he's just kind of, like

He's getting to me right now.

So that's why I'm pausing.

JR is, uh, he's just trying

to get into my thoughts,

make me not focus

on what I'm trying to say.

He was, like, "You stop now.

Now. Just stop."

JR is in my head,

he's trying not to let me speak

about what's going on

or what happened.

And you should show them the

picture of the man that you drew.

This, all of a sudden,

I started going into a trance,

I just remember saying,

"Pen and paper, pen and paper."

They say that I was just, like,

swaying back and forth, or whatever and

Just drawing, drawing, drawing

and that's what it ended up.

Careful, june bug,

don't swing too high.

[Granger] Okay, Mama.

[water bubbling]

[Chris yelling]

No! No, no! Help!

Granger!

Stop! Help! Vickie!

Help!

[shrieking]

[gasping]

Oh, my Chris. Chris!

[Chris] Help,

get me out of here.

Come on. Come on,

let's get into the house.

I was screaming for Chris and

turned around and I looked back

and I'm looking into the tree

and I see a woman.

She's facing me

and then it just disappeared.

While I was looking at it,

it just disappeared.

I don't know what that was, I think

maybe my eyes were playing tricks on me

and Chris is, like,

"Probably not."

And I'm, like, "But maybe,

maybe that's what it was," you know.

And she's, like,

"I don't think so, Vickie."

And I'm, like,

"That's what I want it to be.

I just want my eyes

playing tricks on me.

I don't want it

to be anything else."

I think when she saw that,

everything kind of started

going together

of her believing me.

We decided to bring a medium

into our house

to find out if we could make

them stop or get rid of them.

There is blood in this house.

Pain, so much suffering.

Drowning out the voices

who once lived here.

Innocent spirits, children.

[speaking Spanish]

[in English] They are crying.

They want to be heard.

There is another voice, angry.

So angry.

A man.

He wants the other

spirits silenced.

He wants you silenced.

I am biracial,

I am half Black and half white.

Because he feels that I

am one of his offsprings,

that he forgot to m*rder or that

he m*rder*d me and I came back.

Now, please, pray with me,

let us guide them home.

[speaking Spanish]

[woman gasps]

[in English] JR decided to make himself

present, the room got really heavy.

That's when I started

hearing the name, "JR, JR,"

over and over

and over in my head.

And then minutes after that,

then we saw the door bevel,

this door bevel coming through.

And that was the most

weirdest thing I've ever seen.

It was like an animated thing,

it was, like, coming out.

I mean, I've never taken LSD, but I'm

pretty sure that's what it looked like.

It was just, like

- Doors don't move like that.

No, no.

It just all manifested into kind

of, like, a negative energy,

which no one can escape, you know,

who pretty much passed away in that area.

You know, when she said that

there was a lot of death there,

she was not lying.

The hopes for a medium

to come to my house

was to try to figure out

what was going on.

What can I do to help, you know,

to have them, you know, go to the light?

You know, for our family to have

peace, for everyone to have peace.

But what I found out,

through the medium,

that that wasn't gonna be

a part of a happy ending,

you know, for them and,

obviously, myself as well.

After the medium left,

it got calm

for a couple of weeks,

but then it got worse.

I was trying to do everything

that I can to keep this home,

to tell him that, you know,

"You're not gonna control me,

you're not gonna run me

out of my house,

you're not gonna run

my family out of the house.

This is our home. Your home is on

the other side, in the afterlife."

[mimicking g*nshots]

[mimicking g*nshots]

- [exclaims] Got me. [chuckles]

Where did you get this?

Get what?

This, the knife.

Did you go in my tool kit?

There's a knife there? Cool!

No, Granger, swear to me you did

not get this from my tool kit.

I swear.

Mama?

I don't know how he did it or how

he got it or how it came to be,

but these blades were

in a compartment

and it was all the way

in the back of our storage,

you know, that's detached

from the house.

Like, in order for me to get it,

I'm gonna have to pull

everything out just to get to it

and it's gonna take me

about 35 minutes to do that.

So, how did he get it?

You know, and as a parent, you know,

safety comes first for your child,

you know, not wondering

what's gonna happen next.

You need to take Granger

out of the house right now.

Go for a drive or something.

What? What are you - Vick,

he's in the house, please, go.

[sighs] I'm not leaving you here alone.

Come with us.

I'm not afraid of him.

I just don't want Granger

in the house right now.

Fine, I'll take him out for an hour,

but then we're coming right back.

One hour.

JR did not like the fact that we knew

about his secret, so he wants to k*ll me.

[distant thud]

This was my house and no one's

gonna kick me out of my house.

I don't care how much you try to scare

me, it's not gonna happen.

[coughing]

[choking]

[retching]

[screaming]

[Chris] It felt like all my

energy got sucked out of me

and I hit the floor on my knees.

[screaming]

[footsteps approaching]

Oh, my God, Chris, are you okay?

What happened?

- Mama?

He thought

that he had k*lled Chris.

I just couldn't

be there anymore,

I had to get out of that house.

And I want to just

be away from it.

Voices still need to be heard.

You know, everyone

has to find peace.

And if I can give that to those

souls, then so be it.

Most people who've seen these

photos, it disturbs them sometimes.

There was a person, or an apparition

that was hanging from the tree.

We said it was probably a sl*ve

woman, uh, who was hung.

And that is

the sl*ve master, JR.

Okay, june bug, time to go.

We did eventually

just let go of the house.

And it was very hard,

because we had plans,

we had hopes,

you know, we talked

about how we wanted to

change it and make it better

and live there for a long time.

[sighs softly]

What are you looking at?

Nothing, sweetheart.

I didn't want to sell it,

but I had to.

I had hopes for this house

and our dreams.

And it didn't end that way.

[motor revs]

[Chris] It is surreal.

It is surreal to know

this energy exists around me.

I try to live

a normal life as possible.

I don't think he can

touch me really anymore,

because I'm not on that

property, I'm not on that land,

but he's still with me

and he keeps an eye on me.
