Unfortunately, we do have to say goodbye
to one team tonight,

and we have to send
both of those designers home.

because we love you all as people so much.

leaving the competition tonight is...

I didn't know I was capable

I didn't even know what my aesthetic
looked like until this,

and it's shown me that.

-Are you ready for your next challenge?

This challenge is right up there, folks.

There is no higher benchmark
in the fashion world.

We are talking about the greatest night
in fashion, period.

-It's the Met Gala, darlings!

Gigi is in her Versace Met Gala outfit.

To see it in photos is one thing,
but to see it on her in person,

Gigi is beyond a goddess.

-Wow. You really came in casual, huh?
-[Gigi] I know.

Oh my God. The Met Gala
is like the red carpet on steroids.

Like, as a designer, it's the ultimate.

I mean, who doesn't want
your work showcased

on the most beautiful, gorgeous people?
It's a dream.

The Met Gala is all about art as fashion
and fashion as art.

There is no bigger stage than those steps

at the Metropolitan Museum
in New York City.

Nothing is too over the top,
as you can see.

Every outfit needs to be a showstopper.

You will all be designing a look
for a favorite Met Gala theme of ours.

Oh yeah.

It's the theme from 2019,

when Billy Porter was carried in
by six shirtless men

wearing his gold Sun God look,

Zendaya wore a glowing Cinderella dress,

and Katy Perry showed up
as a human chandelier.

And that theme was Camp: Notes on Fashion.

It's all about exaggeration,
extravagance, and playfulness.

The worst thing you could do
at the Met Gala is play it safe, right, G?

Yeah. I always say,
when working on my fit with the designers,

that I want people
to either love it or hate it.

If people's opinions falls in the middle,
I didn't do my job that year.

We wanna see your boldest,
craziest, most innovative designs yet.

Every look shouldn't just say something.

-[shouts] It should scream it!
-[Deontré laughs]

You've been randomly assigned
a female model.

Their photos and measurements are
at your workstation. You know the drill.

Our special guest judge is someone
that knows the Met Gala inside and out,

and she is someone
that I trust above anyone else

when it comes to fashion

because we shared our clothes for years.

-[designers gasping]
-Oh my God.

-Stop.
-And we still do sometimes.

Yeah. She has walked
for every major fashion house.

She also happens to be...

-[screams] My sister!!
-[designers screaming]

[Gigi] Bella.

-[designer] That's so good!
-[designer 2] It's gonna be so fun!

Oh, I'm so excited.

Most designers spend about one year
on their Met Gala looks.

Are we giving them one year?

Yeah, you have one whole year
for this challenge.

-[all laughing]
-Okay!

-No! You actually have seven hours today...
-[Megan fake cries]

-...and a few more tomorrow.
-Wow.

Yo, female models only on the Met Gala?

And the fact we gotta do it in 11 hours.

This is definitely gonna be one
of the toughest challenges we've had,

and it's got me a little nervous.

The closet has been stuffed to the gills
with everything you need

to bring your Met Gala dreams to life.

Feathers, sparkly things, leather things,

things on things, extra thingies,
lots of things. It's all there.

[Tan] If you need anything extra,
just let us know. We'll get it!

We know this is a crazy, big,
super gigantic, ambitious challenge,

so we'll be doing something
a little bit different this time.

-[Bao, Megan] Mmm. What?
-No one will be going home tomorrow.

-[some designers] What?
-[Bao, Megan] What do you mean?

The winner of this challenge
will get an advantage for the next one

unlike anything we've ever done before.

-Oh man.
-What kind of mess is this? [chuckles]

The winner will get the power

to change the entire competition.

-[designer] God.
-[Tan] It's so big!

-Oh man.

-[Desyrée] Mmm.

You feel safe,
but pressure's on in a different way.

The winner gets an advantage.

I need that. Like, I wanna win.

We at six people right now,

and the 200,000 just got
five more pins to knock down.

-[designers] Yeah.

When camp comes to mind,
I think about just over the top,

but also having a message.

I love that.

-I just needed a little outfit change.
-[laughs] I love the outfit change.

-I'm cozy now.
-[laughs]

-Met Gala. Big one.
-I know.

What are you hoping to see?

I do want over the top,

I do want extravagant,

I do want celebratory,

but I don't want it to go to the place
of costume without reason.

-[exciting music playing]
-What you thinking, Meg?

I'm thinking
early 2000s mall rat type of vibe.

What are you thinking for this?

First one that came to my head

was the caterpillar
turning into the butterfly,

so it's dope, like, neon furs,

like, my patchworking.

I'm looking for something
that you wouldn't see in any store.

It would live in a museum.

-Met Gala is so red carpet, right?
-[Deontré] Yeah.

And what is it that everybody
always wants to have on the red carpet?

Mmm...

-A damn pocket!
-[both laughing]

Of our designers, do you feel there are
any that think they've got in the bag?

I think this is Bao's challenge
to conquer.

What she does is those beautiful,
sexy, red-carpet moments.

I'm a little nervous,

but this is one to be nervous on.

Do you know who I'm nervous about?
Our little Nige.

[Gigi] I know. I hope he doesn't get lost
in the fear of the woman

and something over the top
that he loses himself.

This is the complete opposite
of what I do.

[Gigi] In the same boat as Nigel,

Desyrée could feel
out of her zone right now.

[Tan] Yeah. Yeah.

[Desyrée] Go big or go home, huh?
Technically, no one's going home.

-[Megan] No one's going home! [laughs]
-Go big or no advantage.

My idea behind my camp dress
is taking it to the farcical sense.

So I'm going to make
this ginormous ballgown,

and then fill it up
with all these massive, oversized pockets,

and also make a little tiny bustier,

but have pockets in it too.

I have to build
the base foundation dress first

before I can even
start making it the concept.

Bella and Gigi are, like,
I mean, beyond red-carpet icons.

To be able to showcase it
in front of them is just... pinch me!

This challenge is a big deal
'cause this is what I do.

I do red carpet.

My work with J.Lo put me on the map.

I created her birthday dress
when she turned 46,

and it became a huge viral sensation.

[lively music playing]

I definitely want to show the judges
how much volume and drama I can create

with this look.

I need to win this challenge.
This is my moment.

My idea of camp
is making something into an extravaganza.

So I wanna take bow ties
and make it campy.

So I wanna make my entire garment
out of bow ties of all different sizes.

So you're gonna make
the whole bustier out of...

The entire dress.

-Even the skirt?
-Yes.

Whoa.

Big ones, small ones, little ones.

-[in high pitch] Tiny ones!
-Wow. I also have a teeny-tiny concern.

-Go ahead.

Maybe that's a good place to start
is just start making a million bows.

But I look like a ten ♪

♪ Gotta cash in on the high fashion... ♪

[Desyrée] I think camp is kinda
taking something and exaggerating it.

So my idea right now
is kinda like sagging and that culture.

When your grandma
always tells you to pull up your pants,

but maybe do, like,
the entire dress out of boxers.

I am deciding to go
with a boxer hoop skirt

constructed out of old-man boxers.

And for the top,
I'm going to use white tank tops

and create some type
of structured, cropped silhouette.

I'm going super feminine this time.

I usually stick to pants
and more masculine looks,

even on a female,

but I'm doing a skirt for the first time.

This is all new for me.

I played basketball my whole life,

and so when I transitioned into fashion,
it was really like reinventing myself.

I'm completely self-taught.

I bought a sewing machine
and just started stitching fabric.

I started this brand, Todd Patrick,
named it after my little brother.

It's catered to a certain crowd,

but it's important that I show people

that don't have the money
to go to fashion school,

"Chase your dreams.
There's nothing you can't do."

[pop music playing]

-[snipping]
-How do you like it?

-Big enough?
-So cute. I love the color too.

[Tan] Hi, Deontré!

-Hey.
-[Tan] Tell me what you're doing.

[Deontré] I have two sisters
that I'm really close to,

and they love to dress
all types of craziness.

But it doesn't give people the right
to invade their privacy and to touch them.

Yeah.

So my look is kinda representing, like,
just women and their empowerment.

It's gonna be titled "Hands Off."

I wanna create, like, one gigantic hand
out of, like, nude leather

covering up her body and protecting her,

and then I'm gonna make a hat
to kind of cover half of her face.

-Are you gonna construct it like a puffer?
-Yeah, it's gonna be a puffer hand.

Oh!

Do you feel like this one, you could win?

-Remember, this win is so important.
-It's so important. Yes.

I definitely think I have a great chance.

I've never created anything with this type
of political message behind it,

but this is something that matters to me
because I respect women so much.

My sisters, we have a close bond.

They're like my rock.

After I graduated high school,

I decided I wanted
to go to a fashion school.

Unfortunately, I had to stop
to take care of my mom

who was diagnosed with stage-four cancer.

[soft music playing]

[Deontré] My mom passed away,

and it broke my heart
into a million pieces.

And my dad passed away
three years after my mom.

I think that he died, really,
from a broken heart.

After losing both parents,

it kinda forced me and my sisters
to support each other even more.

I could never repay them for all the love.
They mean the world to me.

I know that I have to make them proud too.

♪ Call it synergy... ♪

[Megan] I just broke the needle.

So camp, to me,
means over the top, super elevated.

I want a caterpillar
growing into the butterfly

to kind of symbolize our careers
as designers.

You know, we don't really get
to appreciate the process.

So, for the butterfly stage,
I'm gonna try my first bodysuit,

and I wanna cover the body.

I want it to feel
like she's an actual butterfly.

And then for the caterpillar stage,

I wanna do, like,
this dope patchwork fur coat.

I'm most concerned about making sure
this bodysuit fits her perfect.

Women have so many more curves.

They have the bust.
They have the butt, the hips.

Getting that to fit
how it's supposed to fit,

it's gonna be a challenge.

So, right now,
I'm cutting, like, the pieces.

I'll construct it to a certain point,
but the side seams are open,

so when I get the model in,
I'll be able to just do some fitting,

get that perfect.

It's top six.

People haven't seen me
do anything tight yet.

This is my time to show my versatility.

[snipping]

[Amari] Gigi, them your shoes?

Oh my gosh!

How are you walking
and not breaking your ankle?

-That's my job.
-[steam hisses]

All right, what are we doin'?

So I'm doing a play
on the early 2000s mall culture.

I wanted to do something
really playful, campy.

Even if you didn't exactly
know the reference, you'd still see camp.

The look is going to be a drop-waist gown
with a yoke in the front

mimicking how we used to wear
tank tops over T-shirts,

lots of ruffles, and a midriff cutout,

and I'm going to create my own print
by airbrushing.

-[Tan] Okay.
-[Gigi] I love this material close up.

-Because from a distance, it's flat.
-It's very flat.

The most interesting thing
is the texture of it.

Keep that in mind
while you're airbrushing.

The airbrush could help
bring out that speckly texture.

'Cause it doesn't capture
any light whatsoever.

So I think it is wise that you're doing
something to it to manipulate it.

[hip-hop music playing]

Designers, you have four hours left
in the Next in FashionMet Gala challenge.

Oh Lord!

[Desyrée] How do you get this
to not be as bouncy?

[Megan] When you put weight on it,
it won't bounce around.

I'm working on this skirt.

Come on, girl.

Every challenge,
I've done something I haven't done.

We're down to six designers,
so you gotta keep pushing the envelope.

Keep pushing yourself.

I'm choosing to use real boxers.

I want them to look like boxers
first and foremost.

I don't want it to look like plaid fabric.

I'm constructing these boxers
in a way to be layered very strategically

because as she walks,

in my head, I want the dress to have
a little bit of fluff and movement to it

so it brings life to the dress.

-Should I go all blue?
-Yeah, take the red out.

The orange-reddish color
is giving Christmas.

-Ha-ha!
-[Megan laughing]

-[Desyrée] How's it going, girl?
-Um... I have a lot to do.

I've made about 50 bows.

I still pretty much have 30 more.

My strategy is to get as many bows done
as quick as I can

so I won't be making any bows tomorrow
and only constructing the dress.

But I'm running out of fabric.

I'm running out of time.

I still have quite a bit to get done,

so I'm super stressed and pressed.

Amari, are you stressing?

-[Amari] Mind your business.

I've set up a whole airbrushing station
in the workroom,

and just as I wanted, the dress
has turned into a living sketchbook.

[Deontré] That is so cool.

Illustration and printmaking
is a huge part of my design.

Part of what makes my work powerful
a lot of the time

is that it does have
my illustrative touch,

and so I would love
to show the judges some of that.

But, like, Tan and Gigi did warn me
that the dress looked flat.

I think they were surprised
to see a white dress from me.

Amari, are you using this?

-[Amari] No. Take it.
-[Megan] Thank you.

Hopefully, adding this blue, shiny fabric
will add another dimension.

The purple added
a little spunk to yours, Megan.

I feel just stressed out
about getting the pockets done.

so the hands and the fingers are not
all over the place and looking crazy

with a couple colors of the furs.

I feel like it'll go with the color tones
of my bodysuit underneath,

but I do want it to feel a bit different

'cause it is a different stage.

The Met Gala is over the top,

so I need to make sure this coat
has a big impact on the runway.

I've been wanting to do,
like, a patchwork-fur situation,

so this is the perfect time.

[Nigel] This is definitely one
of the biggest patchworks I've done.

I've actually done furniture
and art pieces,

but this is definitely
way bigger than that. [laughs]

Designers, there is just one hour left.

However, there's something about it
that I actually think is interesting

considering she's never made

I'm gonna construct the entire dress,

and then I'm gonna add snaps
so the model can snap into it.

I need to hurry up and build it
before she gets here.

This is interesting.

I think, because the dress
had a lot of, like, stark white

that it was looking flat,

so I'm adding blue, pink, purple,

and maybe more, time depending.

What I have to do is attach my nails
on my hand over there,

also put some fabric
over the hat that I created.

Trying to make
as many pockets as possible.

You know, this one
has taken me 15 minutes.

That's, like, one for 15 minutes.

I don't got that time.

Getting the bodysuit

that's the most difficult part for me.

I'm not feeling my white shirt,

how the tank top's sitting on her body.

Need to think of an innovative way
to use the tank top,

but still give it structure.

I didn't like the layering effect
of the shirt,

so I've decided to make the entire shirt
out of the tank tops.

-Are you working on a new piece?
-Yes.

Okay, in the eleventh hour!

In the twelfth hour, it's lookin' like.

Every bow that was made
is gonna be used on this dress,

so I'm creating something on top of it.

Bow-tastic!

No bow left behind!

So I want it to be super out there,

and then the bows kind of positioned.

I feel I've accomplished the goal
of making it not flat.

a lot of colors and movement.

It's almost like an optical illusion,
so I don't feel that it's flat anymore.

What makes a great Met Gala look?

The most important part about fashion
is self-expression.

And I think that self-expression
comes from camp.

Some of the best designers in the world
have a bit of essence of camp in them.

It's about having fun.
It's about being exciting, playful.

My first Met Gala look.

Ladies and gentlemen, it is the Met Gala.

[Tan] I love the idea of a puffer jacket
as a hand.

-[Tan] I think it's kinda cool.

I wish the fingers were connected,
so they weren't just so spread apart.

You can't really tell it's a hand

when they're all flopping
all over the place.

[Gigi] But I think that his fabric choice
was really good.

It had a lot of different textures to it,
which keeps it exciting.

[shutters clicking]

As they come through the paparazzi tunnel.

It's giving Björk swan.

-[Jason] Also "Katy Perry would do it."

-Katy would wear this to the Met.
-[Jason] Definitely.

-I love the crystals on the corset.
-But I wish it was more fitted.

-Tailored to the body a bit more.

It's giving me bakery.

It looks like a chef's hat.

[Tan] I do wish
the construction was better.

I'm just obsessed with the creativity,
honestly. It's gorgeous.

-[Jason] "Hands off." I love that.

Oh, I know who this is.

[Gigi] I like the concept
of the white denim,

but it doesn't read very "wow."

On a red carpet, when the lights hit it,
it's a bit matte for me,

and I'm really glad
that she added that iridescent fabric.

[Tan] The design on the fabric itself
just feels crafty.

If she'd used the iridescent over it all
and covered it, it wouldn't be so obvious.

I love the ruffled sleeve.
It gives a little bit of a va-va-voom.

I don't think
it's necessarily a Met Gala look.

-I feel like it needs to be...
-[Gigi] It's a bit too casual.

This is, like, our least big Megan moment,
which is bizarre.

I love this. I think it's so fun.

I love that she used
the same color and fabric for the pocket,

so it's just kind of a subtle nod to it
in a playful way,

and the top construction's gorgeous.

I love that the pocket's silhouette's
the same shape as the bralette.

[Jason] The tailoring is perfection.
The fit is crazy.

[Gigi] I love this for Bao

because what she's known for
is these really body-con...

This is so different for Bao,
and I'm really proud of that.

than I wanted it to.

I love the idea
of a thousand bows making one look,

but I don't know if that is coming across.

I really love the ruching
underneath the belly button,

but the bottom half feels a bit undone.

I love the top half.
Like, from her waist up, perfect.

From the waist down,
it's looking bejumbled.

I agree with you.

Megan, what was your inspiration
behind your Met Gala look?

I was inspired
by early 2000s mall culture.

I loved watching
the older girls be independent,

shopping at the mall,

so I wanted to reference
the tank tops over T-shirts,

drop-waist, midriff,

and it's all airbrushed

because I used to love to go
to the airbrush stand at the mall.

When it walked out, it gave me the chills

because Gigi and I in Aspen

used to go to this restaurant,
and they had an airbrush.

-Airbrushed T-shirts!
-T-shirts.

[Bella] And we could go
and get airbrushed T-shirts,

and it was so nostalgic
for me to see this.

I really enjoyed
watching it walk down the runway,

and I loved the styling of it.

[Gigi] I think
it's a beautiful Megan look,

but what surprised me the most
is that for your Met Gala day,

I thought you would've gone bigger.

-You could've gone there. It's camp.
-Mm-hmm. Yeah.

I love how you added
that iridescent fabric to the bottom.

I love the collar,

but I think the white denim
is just a little bit dull for me

because we're talking about Megan.

Okay.

When it first walked the runway,
I wasn't blown away

because think about the fabric choice.

Think about how
this is gonna translate on camera.

It's dynamic,
but you have to choose a fabric

that is going to transcend
just how dynamic it is in person.

-That makes sense.

[Deontré] So my inspiration is called
"Hands Off."

I wanted to embrace women,
how they celebrate their body,

and that doesn't give you
the right to touch them.

I have sisters, too, so I wanted
to just celebrate them in this look.

I love the idea behind the look.

You know, the one thing for me

was that I wish
you had tacked together the fingers

because when she walked,
they just kind of fell apart,

and at times,
you couldn't tell it was a hand.

The hat needed a little bit more work,
too, but again, I love the idea.

[Jason] You took Met,

and you grabbed it by the fabric,

and you created something
that will actually go viral.

I see this on a carpet.

I see this as
one of those questionable moments.

"Is it good? Is it bad?
What the hell is that?"

You really, really did something new.

The construction is my only thing.

But you k*lled this.
"Hands off," the nails.

It is so current, it is so now,
and it is so you.

You are a masterful genius.

by menswear bow ties,

so I kinda wanted to create something
that was campy and elegant and me.

Amari, the top half,
for me, is perfection.

I love the way the neck is.

I love the open back,
and I really love the skirt, you guys.

The more I look at it too...
The ruching of the front of it, like...

But that's when it's standing still.

You can't just make a look
that just stands there.

-You wouldn't wear it how it is.
-I would put it with a jean and I would...

But that's not what she showed us.

-Well, I style myself. I can style her...
-[Jason and Tan laugh]

When it was moving on the runway,
she felt differently, and, like...

You're seeing
what I've been seeing for 25 years.

Amari, we love you as a person,

but you put so much work
into making these bows.

I wish that they didn't fall
and jumble so much together

so that your work
could be more celebrated.

Your biggest downfall was construction,
but I love the concept,

and that top part just screams.

was, like, the caterpillar
growing into the butterfly.

Let me tell you something.
I love the patchwork.

I know how hard that is.

I love the way that that cape drapes.

The headpiece is so gorgeous.

The part that I didn't love

was I wish maybe
there was some boning, if anything...

I get you.

...just to be able to accentuate
how beautiful the outfit is.

But I really think fitted
with a bigger wing and denim,

Gigi would wear that.

-Yeah. I would.
-I have to say.

It was my first time making a bodysuit.

For the first time,
it's not too shabs, to be frank.

I do like the bodysuit,
but I do not love the cloak.

Yes, I know the patchwork is you,
but the fabric is so not you.

Maybe if that was teamed
with something else underneath,

it could've worked.

I just don't see the correlation
between the two, Nigel.

-Don't lose yourself in the challenge.
-[Nigel] Yeah.

I definitely wanted
to go outside of my box with this one.

I've been wanting to play with fur,

you know, so I felt
like this was the time for me.

If it was all in that red,
Rihanna would wear that.

[Bao] What does everybody always love
on the red carpet?

Everybody goes crazy for a pocket.

I wanted to take it to the farcical level
and just... the drama. [chuckles]

-It's gorge. It's gorge.

[Tan] The top, I can tell it's Bao,

but the skirt, I've never seen you
do something like this,

and I like that you kept me on my toes.

You gave us many utilitarian pockets
that don't really match up

with what you'd expect
with a feminine look.

I think that's beautiful.

Maybe you could pump it up slightly

because it's the Met Gala,
and you expect a little bit of crazy,

but other than that, Bao,
I think it's absolutely beautiful.

The top could've fit better,

but the volume of the skirt
gave it that Met Ball kind of moment.

This is like Gigi and Zendaya
put together in a look.

It's everything. I love it.

So I tried to think of the thing
that was, like, the most unattractive

and make it into something fresh.

You did a woman's look,

and you slayed.

Love the fun of the boxer.

I love that you turned it
into such a beautifully shaped skirt.

I love the shape of the shoulder
and the bell sleeve.

It is camp, and it's major.

The story behind it
made it be even more impactful for me.

The fact that you did classic plaid,

The concept itself is so smart.

Love Desyrée's concept.
I think that she ex*cuted it beautifully.

I think all of us
would've worn that look happily today.

[Jason] I thought it was dynamic.

I thought it was big and camp,
and I thought it was Met.

I think that another one
that was very camp was Deontré.

[Tan] The concept was fantastic.

Yeah, the execution wasn't quite right,

but I can always tell it's him,
which is a mark of a great designer.
