01x02 - This Is Going To Hurt

Post by bunniefuu »

[tense dramatic music]

[rain pattering,
thunder rumbling]

[Jurgen] Rain.

It always rains.

Like the Emperor’s had his fill of this
place and wants to wash us all away.

Just look at them all.

Trying to pretend the
world isn't burning.

Poor b*stards have no idea
what’s coming for them.

Probably just as well.

If they'd seen the
sh*t that I’d seen...

And then there’s Baldur.

I hadn't seen him for years.

Hadn't wanted to
see him ever again.

Too many memories.

He looked good, too.

Working as a free agent
seemed to suit him.

b*stard.

You look like crap, Baldur.

I see you're still
projecting, Jurgen.

[Jurgen] So. A lead.

[Baldur sighs]

You know as well as anyone,

finding someone in this
sump heap isn't easy.

[Baldur] Never mind
a man like Heroth.

I was close to giving up.

Judging by the state of
you, you already had.

[thunder rumbles]

He wasn't wrong.

I’d searched for the
traitor for months.

But the constant pain in
my head won out long ago.

You're lucky you
don't share my curse.

[thunder crashes]

You mean excuse.

You just need the
mettle to wield it.

That had always been
Baldur’s problem.

So damned sure of himself.

Guess it came from having
fists like wrenches,

and an obscene
talent for violence.

[tense ominous music]

[thunder rumbles]

So this lead, where
exactly do we find it?

Sortha’s place.

The hells we do.

- You know I haven't seen her since...
- I know you're an as*h*le.

But I know that
Bellona trusted you.

[Baldur] And so did Sortha.

It’s time you got over yourself.

Do you want to
find Heroth or not?

[Jurgen] For Emperor’s sake...

[indistinct chatter]

Sortha.

She might have trusted me,
but I never trusted her.

For a while, I even wondered
if she'd been in on it.

She was a woman who’d switched allegiance
more times than I’d reloaded my stubber.

When we found her, she’d
turned on her own crew.

Helped us take out a corrupt Rogue
Trader she’d been working for,

buying her way onto
Bellona’s team.

Hell of a woman.

[Sortha] Jurgen.

You look like...

Here we go...

you could use a drink.

Just don't expect
you’re setting up a tab.

She always was more interested
in the credits than the job.

Sortha.

[ominous music]

It’s been a while.

-What brings you–
-He does.

So you finally managed to
prise him off the floor.

[scoffs] What was it?

A woman?

In a manner of speaking...

[sighs]

Bellona.

This again?

It’s been years.

If Heroth’s still alive, and
that’s a hell of an ‘if’,

he’s probably on the other
side of the Great Rift by now.

Maybe if you'd got your sh*t
together three years ago,

you might have had a chance.

I thought you had more sense.

The time has passed.

You're both chasing ghosts.

He’s here.

And I suppose you just
‘have a feeling, ’ do you?

I've got a lead.

Right. And I’m a f*ck’ zoat.

[sighs] What did you bring
me here to see, Baldur?

Not what.

Who.

[laughter, indistinct voices]

That’s Broath. He’s
a regular here.

[Sortha] Works down
at the voidport.

He knows where Heroth is?

Baldur, if you're
wasting my time...

No. Wait. Listen.

I overheard him
in here yesterday,

running his mouth about
a guy he'd run into.

- And?
- Said...

he’d almost thrown up,

just being in the
guy’s presence.

That something about the man
filled him with pure disgust,

but he couldn't put his
finger on what exactly.

Just a weird scratchy feeling
at the back of his mind,

and an overwhelming
urge to vomit.

[sighs]

Have you seen what’s happened
to this universe, Baldur?

To the world outside that door?

There’s someone on every street
corner that makes me want to vomit.

[sighs] There’s nothing
to say that it was him.

Yeah. That’s where
you're wrong, see.

Because he said something else.

He said that the guy had
this little gold coin

he liked to roll around his knuckles,
like a party trick or something.

[huffs] f*ck.

I remember that coin.

The way Heroth toyed with it like a
cat with a mouse, biding its time.

He used to say it reminded
him of his old life.

The last Imperial credit from Skrye,
the dead planet he once called home.

Said he prised it from the
fingers of his own dead brother

as the evac ships came in.

I also remember the
foul taste in the mouth,

the spider legs
stabbing at my flesh,

and the searing pain in my skull

if I ever got within
arm's reach of the man.

And if I never trusted Sortha?

Well, I despised Heroth.

[straining]

You break anything,
you pay for it.

I don't want any part
of your sorry crusade.

[men laughing]

[laughing]

Looks like someone
wants to buy me a drink.

Hey, mister. I don't think
he wants a drink that much,

if you get what I mean.

[laughing]

Yeah. I ain't that thirsty.

I’d lived this scene a
thousand times before.

I knew exactly how it went.

And I was too old and too
tired to let it play out

the way Broath wanted it to.

You have some
information I need.

I do, do I?

And what if I don't want
to give you no information?

Look, friend, you're going
to give me the information.

The only real question is how much
blood gets spilled before you do.

Only blood getting spilled
in here tonight is yours.

Look. I can see you know
your way around a fight.

You all do.

Thing is, so do me
and Baldur, here.

So we can all end up at
the cutter’s place tonight,

or we can have another drink and
discuss this like civilized people.

[Jurgen] Doesn't
really matter to me.

[tense ominous music]

And there it is... that
telltale look in the eye.

That moment when the fight just goes out,
a muzzle flash dying in the darkness.

My glass is empty.

[sighs]

Sure. This one’s on me.

And the next.

Because this is
still going to hurt.

[Broath gasps]

See, the thing about being able
to read people like I do...

it’s never anything
other than ugly.

[gasping]

[bell tolling]

[bell continues tolling]

[groaning]

[panting]

[groaning]

[groans]

[grunts, gasps]

Sorry about that.

Have another drink
on me. [chuckles]

[insensate jabbering]

[tense music]

I thought we'd
already settled this.

Sit down, have another drink.

The thrice-distilled
‘methium run-off

will end your night on a high.

Good to see you, Sortha.

Lies have never sat
well with you, Jurgen.

[Broath groaning faintly]

[rain pattering]

I hate it when you do that.

Read people?

Vomit.

[laughs]

You look worse than that time
you tried raw grox liver.

I'll be fine.

Just...

[grunts] Just give me a moment.

[rain pattering]

[tense ominous music]

[shouting]

[tense dramatic music]
